“We cater from one to one million worldwide”

ill Ellis Barbecue and Chicken Restaurant, located at the corner of Forest Hills Road and Downing Street in Wilson, opened in 1963 and is now a Wilson institution. But with the giant fleet of full-service catering trucks Bill has acquired over the years, and the determination to bring his eastern North Carolina barbecue to people anywhere and anytime, Bill’s name is now known worldwide. Bill, Tracy, Vickie and Lawrence Ellis (pictured to the left) operate 35 different catering trucks and vans and will cater any menu. The trucks have mobile, self-contained kitchens included in each one, where they cook all chicken and cornbread on site. The famous barbecue and chicken is always a favorite choice, but Bill’s catering department — with a chef always on duty to assist you with your needs — has prepared everything from heavy hor d’oeuvres to seafood buffets to gourmet plates from California to Canada. They can also ship food to your event anywhere in the world. The restaurant stands by its promise that it can cater “one to one million” anytime, anywhere, and any shift. But if you’re in Wilson and just looking for some good food fast, Bill’s offers a lunch and dinner buffet Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Choose from Pig Pickin’ on the grill, chopped BBQ, baked and fried chicken, hamburger steak, chicken pastry, Brunswick stew, boiled potatoes, rice, collards, fish, cabbage, yams, mashed potatoes, green beans, slaw, corn and other country vegetables, hot dogs, sausage, tossed salad, hushpuppies and much more. Don’t forget to save room for the homemade desserts made fresh daily, including peach cobbler, banana pudding, cookies, cakes and more. Also, Wi-Fi is now available in both the restaurant and convention center.

Buy 1 Lunch Combo And Get Any 1 Pastry

or as many people that eat, or have eaten, doughnuts from The Wilson Doughnut Shop over the years, it’s often surprising to many to realize that the same place that has supplied the area with its original recipe of delicious doughnut for the last 60 years has some pretty great things to offer that have nothing to do with doughnuts. Some people do know about the breakfast, however. And along with their glazed doughnut, chocolate long john or lemon puff — all made on-site daily with the shop’s homemade chocolate and homemade cream, mind you — they can get any number of 14 biscuits. Tenderloin, scrambled sausage/ egg, hoop cheese, turkey link, link sausage — the list goes on. They could even round out their order with some fresh grits or hashbrowns. And they could get it all for the reasonable prices that one would expect to see at a place that primarily sells doughnuts. But it’s the lunch that seems to be the best kept secret at Wilson Doughnut Shop. Lunch specials are added each week, and soup and sandwich combos are available once the weather turns off cold. But it is the everyday, affordable menu staples that keep those in-the-know coming back. From the cheeseburgers, made from fresh meat pattied out daily, to the chicken salad, grilled chicken sandwiches and rib-eye steak sandwiches, the shop is definitely worth swinging back by in the afternoon... Even if it’s only been a few hours since you left it.

hen you sit down to eat at The Creamery or Burger Boy, you’re actually tasting Wilson history. Combined, the two restaurants have over 100 years of serving good food to Wilson and surrounding areas. Now operated by Wilson Amusement Co., Inc., both restaurants offer a full menu of outstanding, time-tested food. Though a long way from its limited menu when it first opened in 1946, The Creamery Family Restaurant still offers all the old classics like cheeseburgers, hot dogs, milk shakes and ice cream. In recent years, the Wilson landmark has added a whole menu of delicious and affordable meals for everything from a tasty family meal to — if keeping with the storied traditions of the place — a first date. Along with a full breakfast menu and plate lunches, they offer dishes like mouth-watering meatloaf, a mountainous hot fudge cake and gourmet sides galore.

A

lthough a new addition to the Wilson dining scene, Maid-Rite Diner, owned and operated locally by the Collier family, has been creating legions of fans across the United States since its first quick-service, casual dining franchise opened its doors in 1926. Their seasoned “loose meat” sandwiches may initially sound odd to a Southerner, but this Midwestern chain’s signature dish will make you rethink what a burger can be. All of these signature sandwiches are made from 100% USDA Midwestern fresh ground beef and served on a fresh steamed white or wheat bun, with your choice of ketchup, mustard, onion and pickles, as well as artisan cheeses and countless other toppings. Or try an “Italian Rite,” which includes savory seasoned Italian sausage, old world marinara, sautéed peppers and onions and melted mozzarella cheese served on a ciabatta bun. Many of their delicious and unique sandwiches and wraps are made with pork, chicken and turkey that the folks at MaidRite smoke on site. Whatever you choose, you can’t go wrong. Though the menu and recipes are time tested — and its customers fiercely loyal — one thing the Colliers are adding to the mix is the inclusion of a full breakfast menu on weekends that is completely unique to this store. Maid-Rite also offers catering for any event. Too busy to go out for lunch? Maid-Rite is happy to offer delivery to local hotels and businesses as well. So call or come by the diner out by I-95... and see what folks across the country have been talking about for almost 80 years.

A Southern Bistro

N

ow in its fifth year of operation, Quince prides itself as “A Southern Bistro.” Truly a chefdriven restaurant, the menu includes a realm of classic Southern cuisine but with a broad stroke of personal interpretation that is always fresh and seasonal. According to owner Peter Edgar: “Our menu highlights the best of each season, keeping only a few of our ‘signature favorites’ year round, which give our guests even more reason to come back and explore.” Quince has a full bar in the front of the restaurant that offers a cozy dining area along with specialty beers on tap, which — like the menus — change with the seasons. You may also want to try a glass of wine or select a bottle from their extensive wine collection from vineyards around the world. Adjacent to the bar area, in the cozy and inviting dining rooms, service is always delivered with casual elegance by a friendly, attentive staff that makes you feel truly appreciated. With unique dishes that capitalize on all the original flavors in the South

’Cools is a long-standing fixture of Wilson

and the Shoppes at Brentwood, and over the years has become the go-to place for watching the game, weekly trivia, listening to some outdoor live music with a cocktail in hand or simply catching up with friends and grabbing a meal in a fun, familiar atmosphere. O’Cools is known for their “Unbeatable Chicken Wings,” which can be ordered plain, BBQ, buffaloed (hot) or in their signature style: hot dipped and refried. But looking further down the menu, you’ll find a whole array of delicious options, from appetizers like crab nuggets, quesadilla rolls, pepperjack dip and nachos to a hearty main course, including chicken breast, tuna steak, a shrimp platter, alfredo pastas and more. Nightly specials bring the crowds in every day of the week. Monday draws the trivia crowd,

Tuesday finds tequila on special and Wednesday is “Women’s Wings Day.” Bucket Thursdays continue to be ever popular, as well as the nightly beer specials on Friday and Saturday. And, of course, a true sports bar wouldn’t be complete without beer specials for football games every Saturday and Sunday. Various liquor drinks are on special daily. Want to enjoy the cool, fall weather while watching the game? Take your drink out to the covered patio where you’ll find TVs with all your favorite teams playing each weekend. Or enjoy one of the many bands that get the O’Cools patio rocking each week. O’Cools is known as the place “where good friends meet.” So grab your old friends or stop on by to make some new ones. There is always plenty of great food, cold drinks and good times to be found at O’Cools.

im Whitley revived the Kountry Kitchen two summers ago after the long-standing restaurant lay dormant for a couple of years. And from the outset, his focus was on one thing: quality. Quality ingredients, quality staff and a quality environment for locals to enjoy “fine country food.” The strategy paid off. The feedback from the lunch buffets and “Kountry Breakfasts” is nothing but positive, and the restaurant’s space is at its maximum capacity most days. Though breakfast is not offered on a buffet — so it can be as fresh as possible — standouts of the country staples include their homemade pancakes and biscuits. On the lunch buffet, a rotating mix of everything from outstanding chicken pastry to tender BBQ ribs and tasty meatloaf complement collards, squash and cabbage, among countless other items. On the cold side of the bar, they offer treats such as homemade chicken salad and deviled eggs all day. Though the restaurant can seat over 100, it includes a small dining room that seats 32 and is available for reservations. Kountry Kitchen also expanded its catering business since its reopening, adding a van and catering small parties and both business and social events all around Eastern NC. Soon, Whitley hopes to even expand the restaurant’s square footage to meet the demand from his growing base of loyal customers. The success Whitley has seen is attributed mainly to word-of-mouth advertising. Customers come in, love their experience and tell their friends. It’s hard to find a better seal of approval in Wilson County when a new restaurant opens — especially for a type of food so ubiquitous in the South and a clientèle so prone to loyalty to their former spots — than to have a steady stream of new faces appear and then reappear time and time again. So if it keeps holding itself to the highest standard of quality it currently does, Kountry Kitchen will continue to grow in Wilson for a long time to come.

‘Best pizza in Wilson’

T

he rapid expansion of Mama Mia’s Pizzeria is directly due to the quality of its authentic Italian menu and the loyalty of its customers. The true New York-style pizzas, as well as the pastas, salads and gourmet entree dishes, are made with only the freshest ingredients. All the vegetables used on the menu come fresh from eastern North Carolina farms. Once Wilson tasted and caught on to this slice of New York right in the Forest Hills Shopping Center, the restaurant began expanding. First, they doubled their dining space in their original location and began selling beer and wine, equipping themselves with a party room able to host private occasions or group events.

Then, just three years ago, Mama Mia’s replicated its success by opening a store in Knightdale. In addition to the stores, Mama Mia’s does plenty of catering. Inside or outdoors: they can take their kitchen anywhere. But all of their success comes back to the popular menu. The number of food options available is dizzying. Pizza comes in New York and Sicilian styles in addition to eight different types of ‘Gourmet Pizzas’. Authentic chicken, veal and seafood dishes are popular items, as well as a huge variety of sandwiches and salads (for the carb conscious). Mama Mia’s likes to point out that their pizza is often ranked as “the best pizza in Wilson” on the popular Web site www.urbanspoon. com. But more than that, Mama Mia’s enjoys being known as the “neighborhood family Italian restaurant” by its growing legion of regulars. And with the two popular locations, the establishment of two Pino’s Pizza locations — a restaurant and delivery service located near I-95 and in Brentwood — Mama Mia’s is fast becoming the go-to place for everyone’s neighborhood.

ack in 1946, the Parker brothers shipped timber from Pitt County up the Tar River to Wilson County to be milled prior to the construction of their new restaurant: Parker’s Barbecue. Today, over 60 years later, their milled timber still houses a consistently packed restaurant serving the same great food. Parker’s continues to thrive largely on a legendary worth-of-mouth reputation built by locals and out-of-state travelers alike. Parker’s feeds people from all over the country on any given day. Time has shown that folks go out of their way to stop at Parker’s when traveling. Its reputation for “good food and good service,” is the main draw that current owners Kevin Lamm, Eric Lippard and Donald Williams admit customers often praise them for. Eat in, take out or allow Parkers to provide full-service catering to your event. After 66 years and counting, it’s a safe bet to follow the crowd.

STEAKHOUSE

N

o longer the new kid on the Wilson steakhouse scene, Pup’s Steakhouse — in it’s third year — has carved out a niche for itself by becoming the only steakhouse in the area to serve Certified Angus Beef®, a lofty designation signaling only the highest quality steaks from around the country. Located at The Shoppes at Brentwood, Pup’s was opened by Wilson native Michael Dunn with a determination to reflect the flavor of his hometown and state, both in atmosphere and the food itself. The restaurant also offers a private upstairs room and within the past year, added a cozy outdoor patio to enjoy a drink or nice meal. Dunn and chef Daniel Bass are also determined to serve a delicious menu that is never frozen, including fresh seafood that is shipped from the North Carolina coast each morning. Start your meal off with crab cakes, a BBQ beef brisket quesadilla, seared tuna or any one of a variety of soups. For the entree, you can’t go wrong with any of this steakhouse’s Certified Angus Beef®, whether it’s the rib eye, New York strip or filet. Or even try a Porterhouse pork chop. On Friday and Saturday nights, indulge in some one-of-a-kind prime rib — it’s the dish that people are truly talking about. But Pup’s won’t be forced into the traditional steakhouse box. Branch out with any amazing pasta dish, and don’t forget about the fresh catch of the day or the “Chef’s Famous Sea Bass,” parmesean encrusted with an orange ginger glaze and served with wild rice and asparagus. Each entree comes with bread, a trip to the great salad bar, a choice of two sides and one of chef Bass’ specialty entree toppings. Before or after your meal, cruise on over to the bar to catch a game on one of the large TV screens and enjoy one of Pup’s nightly drink specials. Join their Facebook page for daily updates on food and drink specials.
