Fike High School June 8, 10 a.m. Dear Graduates: Graduating from high school is a milestone and one of the greatest things you will achieve in your life. Your class – the class of 2013 – is an amazing group, and I know each of you worked hard to reach this point. By graduating from high school, you have already proven you have what it takes to succeed in life. You understand the importance of hard work and education. And you understand that if you want to grasp all of the opportunities out there waiting for you, graduation is not the end – it is the beginning of a new chapter. Whether you are headed straight to a career, the military or a college or university, your goal has to be to flourish once you get there. Just being hired for a new job or accepted into college is a great accomplishment, but you also have to put in some work if you want to stay there. The best way to do this is to make the choice to grow personally and professionally for the rest of your life. From this point, learning is something you must pursue and something you must own. Jobs in the civilian workforce and in the military will require training. Seize those opportunities as the first step toward personal growth or your next positions. People will notice when you work hard and go above minimum expectations. Colleges and universities will require you to take and pass classes to earn a degree. You need to strive to squeeze as much from the learning opportunities as possible and not just view the classes as hurdles to be overcome. The truth is, it is difficult to know what direction your life will take. You may have a goal in mind, but it could change at any moment. By choosing to never stop learning and growing, you will be ready for any path that opens up to you in life. Commit your time, energy and spirit to doing the best you can and more. There are so many people around you who believe in you because we know your education up to this point has prepared you for what lies ahead. Congratulations on earning your diploma, and good luck in your upcoming endeavors. I am certain you will make us all proud.

Wednesday, June 5, 2013 wilsontimes.com 3A Scholarships: Campbell Presidential Scholarship College: Campbell University Parents: Son of Jimmy Sharpe and Pamela Holley-Sharpe Most Influential Teacher: Amber Godwin (AP U.S. History) Statement about Teacher: Amber Godwin possesses such a passion for both her job as a history teacher and for her students and colleagues that it can be felt by all those who surround her. Her positive attitude and ability to relate with the student population makes students want to listen attentively to her every word. Throughout the course of her class Ms. Godwin provides many ample opportunities for her students to learn without having to constantly barrage them with notes. The outlines and section-by-section reviews that she requires her students to do for each chapter worked brilliantly to condense even the most complex of a chapter’s points down so that they were able to be easily understood. Despite her constantly busy schedule, if someone was unable to understand a piece of information or an event she was more than willing to help explain it no matter the time of day or the day of the week. Although I was a student in her Advanced Placement U.S. History class, I, like a few others in the room, lacked a sufficient background in writing formal essays. Upon learning this, Ms. Godwin dedicated a copious amount of class time and before and after school hours giving writing seminars to any student who needed it. In addition to these seminars she was always willing to read over an essay for us and provide advice on where it could be improved. With the diligent help of Ms. Godwin, I was able to improve my writing skills to the point where not only was I able to score a 4 on the A.P. United States History exam, but I also witnessed significant increases on my essay grades in other classes. In the realm of education, students rely heavily on teachers to not only succeed but to reach their true potential. I am positive that if we had more teachers like Ms. Amber Godwin teaching, then more students would have an intense love of both learning and school.

Benefits to joining a campus organization The first week of life on a college campus can be somewhat overwhelming for first-year college students. For many students, college is their first taste of independence. Some embrace that newfound freedom, while others grow homesick and long for the company of their immediate family. But as the school year progresses, the majority of first-year college students adapt to life on campus and grow to love their new surroundings. Once students have comfortably adapted to their new lives, many seek opportunities to become more actively involved in life on campus. College clubs and organizations are a great way to do just that, providing a host of benefits that further enhances college life.
Meet people Joining a student club or organiza-
tion is a great way for college students to meet fellow students, professors and other people of note on campus. This is especially beneficial for first-year college students, whose social circle may otherwise be limited to roommates or fellow residents of their dormitories. Joining a club or student organization can quickly expand that social circle to include people who share your interests and not just your dorm assignment.
Find a major Many first-year college students are unsure about a course of study, enrolling as an undeclared. Such students can benefit from joining clubs or student organizations that pique their interests. For example, joining an oncampus debate club might help you
discover a passion for debate, which can lead down a path to becoming a lawyer. Students who enroll in college without declaring a major may have the most to gain by joining a club or organization.
Boost your GPA Joining a club or student organization also may make you a better student. That’s especially likely for students who join a club or organization that’s aligned with their field of study. A club or organization can help you apply lessons from the classroom in real-world situations, improving your grasp of certain concepts. In addition, your fellow club members may make great teachers, especially those who are ahead of you and have taken many of the same classes you’re now taking
or can expect to take down the road. Such students can be invaluable resources, helping explain concepts and offering advice as to which courses to take and which professors they prefer.
Improve your overall experience Even if a student club or organization has nothing to do with your studies or your future career, signing up is a great way to improve your overall college experience. You’re liable to create more memories, make more friends and get the most out of your time on campus, which many college seniors will tell you is going to be gone before you know it. Take advantage of all of the opportunities your college or university offers, and you will likely one day look back and be glad you made the most of your time on campus.

2013 Pee Wee and Myrtle Owens Scholars Five Wilson County Schools seniors, each with an expressed interest in teaching as a career, have earned 2013 Owens Scholarships to pursue a fouryear undergraduate degree in education. The late Pee Wee and Myrtle Owens established the scholarship program in 1998 with a $2 million endowment. Students receiving full scholarships must teach a minimum of four years in Wilson County Schools or reimburse the scholarship fund for any portion of the scholarship not repaid by service as a teacher. Owens Scholarships are renewable each year for four years. Recipients must maintain a 2.25 grade point average during their freshman year and a 2.5 GPA throughout the remainder of their undergraduate program. At the end of each academic year, the recipients must submit a copy of their grades and a letter of reapplication to the superintendent of Wilson County Schools. Owens scholars are chosen by committee based on their achievements in scholarship, leadership, school and community service and character. Since 1999, 99 students, including this year’s recipients, have received Owens Scholarships.
National Board Certifications Each year, the Board of Education recognizes the newest class of National Board Certified Teachers. To earn National Board Certification, teachers must demonstrate their knowledge and skills through an intensive series of performance-based assessments, including portfolios of student work and rigorous analyses of classroom teaching. Their journey to national certification is a tangible expression of their commitment to high performance for themselves and their students. 2,013 Backpacks in 2013 The second annual Wilson County Schools Back-to-School Fair is scheduled for Sat., Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon on the grounds of Jones Elementary School. Every school family and staff member is invited to attend the event to kick off the 2013-2014 school year. The fair is an opportunity for attendees to ask questions of Wilson County Schools staff, learn about school system programs and operations, access information about community resources and have fun in the kids entertainment area. Also at the event, backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed to students who need them on a first come, first serve basis. “At last year’s event, we set a goal to collect 1,000 backpacks for students in need, and we doubled our goal. This year, we have set the goal at 2,013, and we hope to surpass it as well. I am overwhelmed
by the generosity of this community and its support for our students. Unfortunately, not every child has a backpack with freshly stocked supplies for their first day of school, and it means so much that we are able to provide this for them.” The deadline to collect the backpacks is August 7. Businesses, organizations and individuals interested in donating backpacks and schools supplies should drop them off at Jones Elementary School, 4028 Highway 42 West, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. To make the distribution process as simple as possible at the fair, the backpacks need to be the same size, 18 inches in height, and filled with the same items for kindergartners through seniors: pencils, pens, highlighters, a pencil box or pouch, one-inch or three-inch binders, dividers, packaged filler paper, pocket folders,

notebooks, compositions books, glue sticks, a ruler and erasers. Monetary donations for backpacks and supplies are tax deductible and every $35 donated will provide one child with a filled backpack. Checks can be made payable to the Wilson Education Partnership
and mailed to 200 Nash St. NE, Wilson, NC, 27893. Every contributor of backpacks or donations will be recognized in several ways, including advanced media and web publicity, and recognition during and after the fair. For more information, call 252.399.7713.

2013 Simon Award Winners Ten Wilson County Schools employees and one school won awards during the 2013 Simon Awards held May 9. The awards, which debuted in 2010, stand as the highest recognition the school system bestows on an employee or school and recognize exceptional performance. The Simon Awards carry the name of the late David Simon, a Fike High School student whose response to a cancer diagnosis was to become a scholar. Simon passed away Aug. 9, 2010. “In a year of unbearably heavy decisions uncommon to most adults, David excelled at school and decided the course of his life,” said Fike High School Principal Steve Ellis. “His strength, perseverance and courage carried him a long way following the summer of 2009 when cancer appeared. And he outdistanced every doctor’s prediction for a year. During that year, he changed an entire school system. Following his diagnosis, David turned himself into an honor student, a scholar who tried harder and harder as each day became more and more difficult. In spite of surgeries and chemotherapies and extended stays at Duke University Hospital, at Fike and in class was where he wanted to be. He was and still is an inspiration.” The award categories are styled after the Academy Awards and salute high performance in instructional, administrative and support services. Schools and departments were invited to submit nominations in February. In March, the superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Committee, composed of all 2012-2013 Teachers of the Year, read more than 140 blind nominations and selected three finalists and a winner in each category. The names of the winners were kept confidential until they were announced at the event.

Teacher, Principal and Employee of the Year The 2012-2013 Teacher, Principal and Classified Employee of the Year feature a math teacher who is devoted to every child receiving a quality education, a principal who began her career as a teacher assistant/bus driver and a teacher assistant passionate about making each student’s day the best it can be. All were equally surprised and humbled by their new roles when the announcement was made at a banquet September 18, 2012. Tracey Leon has been teaching at Toisnot Middle School for the past two years. In her 23 years of teaching, she has taught in Louisiana, Texas and North Carolina. When she was in college at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, she had no intentions of becoming a teacher until someone unwittingly proclaimed to her the all-too popular mantra, “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.” As a committed and called professional educator, Ms. Leon has taken exception to the rule for the entirety of her teaching career. “I am proud to have been an agent of positive change in every school in which I have worked. It is a privilege and an esteemed responsibility to be a highly effective teacher leader that impacts so many lives, both professionally and personally,” said Ms. Leon. “Every day I think of my call to serve. I teach because I can, and I do it very well.”
Principal Susan Bullock began her career in education 27 years ago, and has held almost every position in the system. She has served as an administrator for the past six years. In 2009, Ms. Bullock was named the principal at New Hope Elementary School after serving as an assistant principal at Hunt High. She strives for excellence and holds high expectations for her students and staff. Each morning she challenges her students to make their teachers think. Ms. Bullock exemplifies the saying, “No man stands as tall as when he stoops to help a child,” and each day this five-foot one leader seems as if she is ten feet tall. “For the past 27 years, the people in the county have been so good to me,” Ms. Bullock said. “All of my colleagues have influenced me and helped me in so many ways.” Tammy Autry has been a teacher assistant at New Hope Elementary School since 2007 and is currently pursuing her teaching degree. Last year, she served on the School Improvement Team and is often seen hiding under an AJ Rightway costume or as Santa in the kindergarten program. On her own time, she attends PTO meetings and volunteers in the office. Ms. Autry sets high expectations for students and gives them the help and encouragement they need to be successful. In addition to financial gifts from Wilson County
Schools, Wilson Education Partnership and the Wachovia/ Wells Fargo Foundation, Ms. Leon, Ms. Bullock and Ms. Autry will also be featured on a 36-foot billboard courtesy of Lamar Advertising. Ms. Leon also received a new Chevrolet Sonic provided by Hubert Vester Auto Group for the year. Runners-up for Teacher of the Year included Stephanie Muller, an English teacher at Beddingfield High School, and Jennifer Parker, a communication skills teacher at Darden Middle School. Principal of the Year runners-up included Vernita Williams of
Barnes Elementary School and Jerry Simmons of Hunt High School. Classified Employee of the Year runners-up are custodians Randolph Lucas from Gardners Elementary School and Mary Bunch from VinsonBynum Elementary School. Other school-level Teachers of the Year are: Benjamin Gufford, Barnes Elementary; Charles Wairia, Daniels Learning Center; Sonya Smith, Elm City Elementary; Karen Reaves, Elm City Middle; LaDonna Mangum, Fike High; Catherine Slade, Forest Hills Middle; Emily Chilton, Gardners Elementary; Amy Ga-
