The above photos captures a ceremony where lamm was honored in turkey for diving 350 feet into the sea wearing a hard hat, in order to recover soliders from U.s. planes that had crashed there. The photo was taken aboard the uss vulcan. Lamm loved his country and his flag and according to his wife joan, “always took his bible and prayed wherever he was” around the world.

Injured MarI MarIne honored, proMoted pro By Olivia Neeley, Times Staff Writer surgeries and a serious infection after a 50-foot fall down an unmarked dry well in Afghanistan. The ceremony was held in late October at Camp Lejuene in Jacksonville. “I was just doing my job,” a humble Mathis sain later from Walter

A Wilson Marine was honored for his outstanding performance under a high-stress situation while on a mission in Afghanistan. Pfc. Duncan Scott Mathis, a rifleman, received the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal and a promotion to the rank of lance corporal. The 20-year-old has been recovering from multiple bone fractures, a dozen

Reed while recovering from his injuries. After the ceremony Marines were met by Brig. Gen. Burke Whitman, the assistant division commanding general who expressed his thanks to them for what they endured. “These Marines performed spectacular in an extremely challenging environment that had a lot of kinetic activity,” said

Whitman. “The Marines had exceptional leadership and really made us proud.” Mathis, a Beddingfield High School graduate, has made significant progress throughout the months. His right shoulder and right leg have healed and he’s working on range of motion physical therapy exercises with his ankle, which was also broken. He had been wearing a boot on his left leg. He’s now moved up to a brace. “I’m walking. I just wake up every day and work hard to try and get back to my unit,” Mathis said. Mathis’ injuries were many. The four-story fall came at night in May. Mathis and his unit were on a mission when he fell down the unmarked well. He laid there in excruciating pain until the mission was complete. When his unit regrouped, his line mate realized Mathis was not there and went back. He found him and made sure he was safe and then secured the site to keep the enemy away. The Marines at the top of the well talked to Mathis to keep him calm. He was in the hole for about an hour by himself while his unit completed the mission and

before the actual rescue team arrived. “I then applied my own tourniquet, stayed calm and radioed for my higher ups in order to be evacuated,” Mathis has said. Mathis said Wednesday he is in a hurry to return to Fox Company 2/2 based at Camp Lejeune, who have since returned from deployment. “They are all doing good,” he said. “I just want to get back to my boys.” Mathis said while he can walk, he still has a severe limp. But he remains positive and continues to move

toward his next goal. “I’m working on being able to run,” he said. “That’s what I’m going for.”

SPECIAL VISITS While Mathis has been at Walter Reed, many people have stopped by his room to visit including players from the New York Mets, comedian Seth Myers and recently Selena Gomez. But another highranking official made a special visit a couple of months ago — President Barack Obama. The president, who had

been briefed on Mathis’ injuries, called Mathis by name when we walked in. The president visits the hospital around twice a year and talks to the service men and women on the floor. Obama added his signature to a large Marine Corps flag that hangs over Mathis’ bed. He also slipped him a coin when he shook his hand. The coins are handed out by military brass. docuMentIng WIlson’s greatest generatIon Betty McCain and the late john Hackney’s collection now featured in many of our state’s libraries It all started in 2005, when Betty McCain, John Hackney, Jr., and others in the Wilson County Historical Association decided to put on a seminar featuring some of Wilson’s World War II veterans. “I just thought ‘nobody is going to remember all this stuff,’” recalled McCain. “We needed to do something about it.” Though some of the speakers had to cancel, the seminar was a success when they opened the floor up to audience members who were veterans of the war. “We just opened the flood gates when we had that seminar,” said McCain of the small event the Association held at Barton. Since then, McCain and Hackney have collected many thousands of pages of World War II materials from over 250 Wilson World War II veterans and their families. Though Hackney passed away in August of this year, he was able to see the project he cochaired finally housed in the Wilson County Public Library, the academic libraries at Barton College, Wilson Community College, the N.C. State Archives and the Wilson Library at UNC-Chapel Hill. And though those collections are in place, McCain is still accepting submissions, which she will digitize and then send to the N.C. Archives through the libraries. In an interview in 2008, Hackney said that, for many decades, the War was just not something their generation dwelled on, discussed, or bragged about. “It’s really just in the last few years that people are starting to open up about their experiences,” said Hackney. “But it’s important. It’s a piece of first-party history that will be lost.”
