COMMUNITY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A BIG PART OF WHO WE ARE AT WINDERMERE.

Back in the early days of the company it was pretty simple; we would see a need and help where we could. But as we grew, we realized we could accomplish much more if we had a stronger focus, so we started the Windermere Foundation in 1989 with the goal of helping low-income and homeless families. From that point on, whenever a Windermere agent sold a home, a portion of their commission went to funding our Foundation. In its first year, the Windermere Foundation brought in $90,000. This year we are on track to raise $2.3 million for a grand total of $35 million. is funded by more than 7,000 individuals, made up by agents, staff, management, owners, as well as public donations. We keep our administrative costs below three percent, so the vast majority of these donations go back into the hands of our agents and offices to decide how best to use them in their local community. Each of the homes in this magazine represents another donation to the Windermere Foundation. The result is more support for families who are struggling to keep food on the table. More kids who will be able to eat school lunches. More homeless who will have their most basic needs met—and the dignity that goes with it. The need is overwhelming, but every bit helps. As the year draws to a close, I want to personally thank everyone who has supported the Windermere Foundation. The generosity of our agents, owners, staff, and the public never ceases to amaze us; they raise the bar every year. A home’s walls beg for personality. How best to showcase and preserve that hard-earned art collection? “If these walls could talk” takes on new meaning when collecting and preserving art. The piece de resistance of many homes is discussion fostered by viewing the owner’s art. Often a cause of both excitement and distress for homeowners when moving into a new space, deciding how best—and where—to exhibit art while keeping its integrity is always top of mind. In Colorado, Windermere agents John and Yvette Putt have worked with clients and such companies as Denver-based Earth Clay Company to prep homes for extensive works of art. The company creates clay-plastered walls that release negative ions, which help preserve art. “It’s especially beneficial in Colorado, with the drier climate, and it’s also better for your health,” says Yvette. So, this holiday season, collectors can rest easy and let their home’s walls speak for themselves.

For celebrity chef, TV host, and cookbook author Giada de Laurentiis, the kitchen is the heartbeat of a home. While growing up in Rome, her Italian grandfather became her mentor. Today, she fuses traditional Italian cuisine with a modern touch and has recently launched an exclusive pasta collection with Williams Sonoma. Think savory sauces inspired by her daughter and from dishes at her Las Vegas restaurant, spice rubs culled from travels to Italy, and tools of the trade for home cooks, including a wood handled conical cheese grater, a ravioli stamp, and stylish pasta forks and rakes. And with these Top 5 Essential Pasta Tips from Williams Sonoma and Giada, the next dinner party will be oh so tasty. 1. AL DENTE, ALWAYS.

The Italian term “al dente” means “to the tooth.” Giada explains it’s when pasta “has a bit of a bite.” Pasta should be fully cooked, yet still firm when biting it. 2. SIMMER THE SAUCE.

A lively sauce is Giada’s kitchen muse. As such, she spent ample time perfecting the five sauces in her Williams Sonoma collection. She always pours her sauce into a large pan and brings it to a simmer while her pasta cooks. Warm sauce helps pasta finish cooking and ensures everyone’s meal is served at just the right temp.

3. PUT THE PASTA IN THE SAUCE, NOT VICE VERSA.

Rather than draining pasta and then stirring in the warm sauce, Giada uses a spider to transfer al dente pasta from the boiling water into her pot with a simmering sauce. The result? Pasta perfectly positioned for Giada’s cheese technique. 4. HER GRANDFATHER’S WAY… CHEESE, PLEASE.

Giada’s grandfather taught her to grate cheese directly over warm pasta before tossing it with the sauce. “It’s an old Neapolitan way of making pasta,” Giada explains to Williams Sonoma. “You add the cheese to the pasta and, that way, the sauce sticks to the cheese, which sticks to the pasta.” The reverse of the typical American way of sprinkling cheese on top of sauced pasta, it equals cheesy deliciousness with every bite.

The Windermere Foundation impacts a Colorado community by supporting kids’ passion for play.

s Americans become even more connected via fast-paced technology and social media, many communities are celebrating the benefits of unplugging, exploring nature, and connecting via athletics. Each Windermere office has its own Windermere Foundation fund account that’s used to make donations to organizations in their communities. As of Q3 this year, individual contributions and fundraisers have accounted for 62 percent of the donations raised for the foundation, while 38 percent are donations supported by Windermere agent commissions. To date, a total of nearly $34,646,325 million in donations has been raised since 1989. For Michael Beninati, Owner and Managing Partner of Windermere Metro Denver Real Estate, “giving back to our community is essential,” he says. “We have fostered an environment within our company that is one of gratitude and being a giver first. Every time one of our agents sells a home, a portion of that commission is directed to the Windermere

Foundation. In our office, we are proud that we have 100-percent participation with this initiative.” As such, Beninati is passionate about supporting Denver’s Glendale YMCA. The Denver YMCA is part of a larger international initiative. Designer boutiques and locally inspired restaurants satisfy cosmopolitan cravings, while vast, wild beaches and jungle canopied trails allow you to feel completely off-the-grid. It’s no wonder stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Willie Nelson, and Steven Tyler call Maui home. The island’s coast has long been its biggest draw, and for good reason. Every January through March, humpback whales migrate to Maui’s waters to give birth, and snorkelers can hear their lullaby beneath the sea. The North Shore’s famous winds and waves have made it a testing ground for some of the world’s top watermen, including big wave surf legend Laird Hamilton and fearless kite surfer, Jesse Richman. While the ocean will dazzle you, the island’s interiors—from cowboy country to the alpine environment of Mount Haleakala—will surprise you. Each side of the island has its own personality and local flavor. Of course you should enjoy a poolside Mai Tai (or two) at one of Maui’s luxury resorts, but to truly embrace the island’s aloha spirit you need to get out and explore.

UPCOUNTRY & NORTH SHORE A local vibe and lack of big, branded resorts sets this part of the island apart. You can still catch a glimpse of Maui’s paniolo (cowboy) in Makawao and spot some of the world’s top surfers riding giants at the North’s Shore’s legendary surf breaks such as Jaws and Ho‘okipa. BOUTIQUE STAYS

The Paia Inn has a prime location in the middle of town and is steps away from a three-mile stretch of beach. Mini bars are stocked with artisanal booze, like Maui Brewing Co. beers, and an onsite café serves avocado toast until noon. Lumeria, a 24-room stay in Makawao, attracts a yoga crowd with vegetarian-centric meals and daily meditation.

The talents of Maui’s creative community are on display in the independent boutiques of Paia and Makawao. Driftwood Maui has a Bohemian beach-inspired selection of island brands like Acacia swimwear and Jasmine Honey jewelry. At Homme by Nature, score Westerly cardigans, vintage Tomahawk axes, and other Brooklyn-esque wares. Puka Puka in Paia is half boutique, half exhibition space, showcasing limited-edition surf prints alongside designer board shorts and bikinis.

HANA

Mama’s Fish House may be a tourist draw, but even locals come here for the stellar ocean view. The signature Pau Hana— mixed with gin, lime and guava juice—is shaken table-side and will immediately put you in vacation mode. Toast the sunset with a Tai Mai—a lilikoi-spiked twist on the legendary tikki drink—at Haliimaile General Store, an island institution perched up high in Makawao.

Time stands still in Hana, an unspoiled splice of paradise on Maui’s east side. The town has remained largely undeveloped the past 20 years and is a relaxing base to explore black sand beaches, bamboo forests, and cascading waterfalls.

The winter months bring monster-sized waves to Maui’s North Shore. Crowds line the parking lot above the famous surf spot, Ho‘okipa, to watch some of the world’s best surfers and windsurfers get tubed. 19

STAY THE NIGHT

Most people mistakenly see Hana as a stop on the iconic 52-mile Road to Hana drive. After navigating 50-plus bridges and more than 600 curves, plan to stay at least one night to take in the town’s tranquility. Travaasa Hana, one of the very few lodging options, has an Old Hawaii feel and offers cultural activities, such as lei making or bamboo pole fishing. Splurge on one of the ocean bungalows and fall asleep to rumbling waves.

The best food in Hana is sold from a truck. Arrive by 11 a.m. to taste the super fresh spring rolls and spicy mahi mahi curry at Thai Food by Pranee. Locals are known to make the windy drive to Hana just for the burger at Hana Ranch Provisions’ food truck. The grass-finished beef patty is served on a purple taro bun, topped with house-made pickles and papaya ketchup.

Indulge with the six-course chef ’s table tasting menu at Ka‘ana Kitchen at the Andaz Maui. The open-air style kitchen allows guests to watch the action as the culinary team preps such farm-to-table dishes as grilled octopus with watercress and Kona kampachi with nori vinaigrette.
