Artist Betty Tureaud recently debuted her latest creation, The City. In true form, The City is a bright array of colors and includes many hidden areas. Windlight was able to sit down and interview Betty to discuss her current and future art projects in both worlds: WM: You have exhibited extensively in Second Life and have given us many immersive experiences to look at. Tell us how did you first discover Second Life? Why did you choose to create art here?

BETTY: I went to a 3D Conference in Copenhagen and there were four people from Linden Labs, who had a session. I only remember two of the people, one I think was John Lester (Pathfinder Linden). So I went home and downloaded Second Life and went into SL for the first time. This was back in 2007 and I have never left! First I started to build funny gadgets and I presented them in a show and tell. Later I made a shop to sell these gadgets in. These items paid for my SL back then, including my residence. Later I discovered some art galleries and a guy invited me to show my art work. So my first exhibit was on the mainland, in the Copper Nest Gallery.

main inspiration is the wave of migration that today takes place in Europe, from the Middle East to the north. WM: How do you choose the type of mediums to create exhibitions in?

The Greek goddess Nike [Victory] is also called by some the greatest masterpiece of Hellenistic sculpture. I have much excitement sharing with you some of the details of this magical place, truthfully I will be telling you all about what I consider the crown jewel of this design after we visit a few rooms. For her love of design, of creating delightful places to share, Eliza has created luxurious layers of rooms that are placed about to give visitors the feeling of a vast elegance as well as many places to find privacy.

There are flowing Boston Ferns, flowering bright Hibiscus and many others. The greenery alone provides a feeling of being in that wonderful fantasy tree house in a jungle far away.

As I walk from the entry courtyard I pause at a spectacular pond with vibrant lily pads floating and a flowing waterfall over bronze at one side. I make my way to the dining room and decide to see what our designer has in store for me. I am delighted to find that the seats give me not a couple animations but almost twenty. THE ART OF DANCE: ELYSIUM CABARET WRITER: JOHN PHOTOGRAPHY: BABYPEAVONPHOENIX BIKERGRR 81

WM: Tell our readers about Elysium Cabaret. How long has the show existed in Second Life? Who created the show? Why was it created? BABYPEA: I started dancing in SL in January of 2012. I did Gorean dance. But I longed to have more options for expression, so I entered mainstream dance in July of that same year. I found even in mainstream, every troupe had its own style and set of rules. I wanted a place where I could fully express all facets of my creativity, even humor. The only way to achieve that was to start my own troupe. So, with my partner Gunner von Phoenix (also my RL husband) plus the two people I shared a sim with, Paul Woodrunner and Jilley Resident who also wanted to perform, we started Elysium Cabaret. Our first show was December 7th 2012. Paul built The Empire Room for us to have a place to dance in, and we haven’t stopped since! It is a place where people are welcome to come share their imaginations and passion for art and entertainment with one another. WM: How do you determine the various dance numbers and routes for each show? What are your inspirations?

dance at the end of each show where we invite the audience onto the stage, and we dance them in choreographed numbers. It is a lot of fun! For myself, I have folders on my hard drive of songs that I have found that I love, ones I may want to dance to someday. When I am going to create a dance, I play through those songs and pick the one that most stimulates my imagination or excites my creativity at the moment. Dance is about musical expression. I have a great passion for music. I can’t play any instruments in RL and my singing is very ordinary. Dance is my instrument. Through dance, I can give a visual experience of a song. Once I have a song picked out, it becomes a matter of visualizing a set, creating the choreography for that song, selecting a costume… considering the addition of emotes. Bringing all these elements together in a cohesive manner is the final step in dance creation. Almost! There is one more critical step before a dance can be considered complete, and that is to perform it. None of my dances ever feel finished until I have shared them with someone else.

WM: What's on the horizon for Elysium this year? Any exciting events upcoming? BABYPEA: We will continue to have our regular shows every Friday at 6pm SLT, and then our “best of” matinee the last Saturday of each month at 1pm SLT. We are always doing “away” shows, special event bookings, shows for charity, and private hire shows. Soon we will be offering our popular “challenge” shows again, which stimulate creative approaches to dance creation. These will be performed on the second Saturday of each month at 1pm SLT. So stay tuned! Heaps of great shows are in the making!

Do you remember when you were little before you could read? Or when you were just learning to read? Did you pour over the pictures in the book, finding more stories than just the ones that the words provided? Or did the art itself tell you the story?

Her improv poems have had me at the edge of my seat hanging on each and every word that streamed from her conscious as it flowed out of her mouth, down her lap, reaching the stage, and swinging upwards hitting the air waves penetrating the ears and minds of the chosen venue's patronage.

And, this she did for the first time, gaining rave reviews. The chat program did not have voice, so this was truly a coveted challenge she sought out and has been reading aloud every since.

It was around this time she that stumbled on an online chat program. This chat program was called Virtual Places. This place was a virtual haven for poets and she valued the friendship/camaraderie she felt from her interaction with

He sacrificed himself, totally making a fool of himself only to get into a private IM with her saying, "Is THAT what you are so damn afraid of??" thing. Serene wanted to understand her, so she did an improv in which she saw things through the girls eyes. She says she still cant totally understand it, but the words flowed about the topic and they came from a place of love and empathy. The girl told Serene that the words meant something to her and they have been very close every since then.

"Poetry is a state of being to me" she explained to me. And, when I asked her who are the famous poets that inspired her and why. She said, "Alfred Noyes, he wrote The Highwayman. VOYAGES WITH VEE: TELRUNYA WRITER & PHOTOGRAPHY: VEE TAMMAS

147

I learned about Telrunya from a photographer who had used the sim as a backdrop for several photos they entered in a contest I was running for my art gallery. Not only did they win second place in the contest, but I was so taken with the photos and the setting they used that I just had to visit this relatively new sim. Telrunya was designed and created by Nessa Zamora (noralie78 resident) and co-owned by Mayza (Mayzatourment Resident). As they say in their description of the region it’s “A world straight out of a fairytale where you can find magical creatures around every corner. A haven for those who look for a tranquil environment, a home for fairies, fauns, elves and those who love to be lost in a dream world. Nessa is also the owner of Telrunya Landscaping and Sim Design which specializes in fantasy, romance, and nature environments and her artistry is clearly evident on this sim. There are romantic settings throughout the forest and little hidden gems you will happen upon as you explore. The sim is moderate so you can cuddle with your friend or partner and 148

AN ELF IN A MODERN WORLD: THE ELEMENTS OF ROLEPLAY

WRITER AND PHOTOGRPHY: DAWNBEAM DREAMSCAPE

156

157

Last month we discussed negative habits that inhibit conversation skills, and the promise to discuss positive ways to combat these negative habits. Peter W. Murphy recommends four elements to practice daily in his book, Always Know What to Say Easy Ways to Approach and Talk to Anyone.

 Temperance  Charity  Diligence  Patience  Humility  Kindness.

Seems a big order to follow and keep in your role play character. Do you want your role play to be this and only this? Always good, always doing These included: the right thing? It can also get a bit 1.Kindness boring. Is there room for playing 2.Gratitude the devil’s advocate now and 3.Learn to Love Yourself then? How you justify that with 4.Forgiveness your role play takes skill and These elements can be explored in practice. your role play, or you could do something totally opposite to your The opposite of kindness are the real life character. That is the ex- Seven Deadly Sins: citement and freedom of being  Lust involved in role lay! Understanding  Gluttony these positive elements will better  Greed prepare your “good” character or  Sloth your “evil” one. Let’s look at each  Wrath element and the counter point can  Envy be used to develop your role play.  Pride Kindness will be the starting point. Kindness is a virtue, in fact is considered a “Knightly Virtue”, and listed among the Seven Heavenly Virtues:  Chastity 158

Looking over both lists, I can personally see where my choices for the long run would be with the virtues of kindness. Yet, I have found the other characteristics of the sins have been adopted to

me. For each of those listed, I can remember past episodes that I was overtaken, quickly, totally, completely. If I did not act on them, the sinful thought crossed my mind, and a certain satisfaction was achieved just knowing that I was capable of this thought. The key is, don’t share it...OR... do you share it with a little chuckle saying, “I would never act on this, but…” In my opinion, (and we all have our own), a more rounded character is a lot more fun to be with. Wouldn’t emotes such as, *flashes a broad impish grin, help? This way you could share your less than kind thoughts in a teasing way. The next element, Gratitude, is something that never hurts to display. Are you the Queen? Are you the evil Queen or the loved Queen? Gratitude can be one of the things deciding the distinction. An evil Queen would treat subordinates like second class citizens, admonishing them for the slightest mistakes, punishing rather than praising efforts. This only makes a scared workforce, who quakes at the Queen’s presence, waiting her wrath. The loved Queen would realize that the peo-

ple who perform the work at the castle, actually make the Queen’s life privileged, and effortless. Not only would she praise her cooks and chamber maids, she would lavish them with compliments. Think about this a minute. Who would you rather work for? A boss who appreciates you or one who cuts you down at every chance? Bring this gratitude attitude into your personal relationships as well. Saying a simple “Thank You” to your loved ones can go a long way. Take the effort to go one step further with a little bouquet of wildflowers, a note tucked into a place you know they will frequent, breakfast in bed, or my own favorite; a massage! Learning to Love Yourself could be the hardest of all of these elements to attain. Ask anyone to describe themselves in one or two words, and you will get answers similar to: Hard Working, Determined, Loyal, Peaceful. Ask these same people to describe their bodies in one or two words and your answers will likely be: Fat, Frumpy, Disgusting, Too tall, Too short, and Ugly. We really are our own worst enemies. Is there anyone reading 159

this column who wakes up and says, “Hey beautiful, (or handsome), we are going to have a fabulous day today!” Not on this end of the column. It is more akin to… “Oh My God! Another gray hair, another wrinkle! You look like you were rode hard and put up wet to dry!” Our personal “dragons” like to attack us every day. When you feel your best, when you feel your worst, they are waiting around the corner to barrage you with insults and memories of past failures. The best weapon against these “dragons”? “Hey beautiful, (or handsome), we are going to have a fabulous day today!” Every onslaught should be met with this defense. At first it may seem weak, and you still fall under the prey of these personal strikes, however, if you say something positive comparable to the above sentence, you will grow in strength, you do learn to love you where you are in your growth, you can learn to love your body and the space you occupy.

look upon your past mistakes as learning experiences? I know, I know...some of us need to touch a hot stove more than once to learn it will burn us. (*grins knowingly.) As for others, really examine what we are angry about. Nine times out of ten we dislike something they said or did because it is one of our own character flaws. Looking back, there may be times when they did something we find intolerable, such as lying, cheating, selfishness or disloyalty. Again...anyone reading this column who has not committed any of these relationship ending actions? I am not just speaking of romantic relationships either. If a friend commits these acts, it is almost worst than a partner. Forgiving someone or ourselves frees us. We no longer carry the burden of not speaking, dredging up old memories with painful thoughts, and the negative energies that surround these incidents. Forgiving ourselves allows us the freedom of loving ourselves. Feed the love not Finally, Forgiveness. Guess who we the “dragon”. need to forgive first? You are All in all, practicing these four right...ourselves. Instead of feeding elements in your role play and your fodder to the “dragons”, why not real life will help you adjust to any 160

THE ART AND DESIGN OF ZIB SCAGGS

WRITER: ELESEREN BRI ANNA PHOTOGRAPHY: ZIB SCAGGS

Every now and again a designer emerges who truly does blend extraordinary fashion with real ability as an artist. One such is Zib Scaggs, owner and designer of the very successful brand Zibska. For years now Zib's extraordinary jewelry, makeup, hair and clothing have delighted and inspired fashionistas, stylists and models around the grid. Not all though are aware of just what an accomplished graphic artist she is too. I was lucky enough to interview Zib for Windlight Magazine, and get a glimpse into her creative world..

ELEESEREN: Hi Zib, its so nice to meet you and be able to ask you a few questions about your art and your designing. Zibska is huge, well known and very respected brand in SL Fashion, can you tell me a little about how Zibska started, and how you have developed over the years?

I did not want to change the reasons behind my designing, which would inevitably lead to burnout, so I decided to close the in-world Zibware locations, regroup and see where the new adventure would take me, a month later Zibska was opened. ELESEREN: And Zibska is one of my favorite shops! May I ask, when you design, what inspires you, how do you come up with your ideas?

ZIB: Much of it comes from nature, the mathematical precision combined with the seemingly random patterns one finds in the world. It could be the play of light and shadow on the buildings outside, crystalline formations or the dance of plumage on a bird of ZIB: I started creating clothing in paradise.
