As a winner, you get to represent the organization, and yourself as a brand. If you do it well, people will flock to the organization, or school of that organization for tips and education.

One thing that is hardest about pageantry is coming up with something new, wild, unique as well as walking the runway in it.

There is an art to pageantry in all the creativity that you enveloped in. Also, pose selection lets you put to work the whole of the design of your look. It is important to make sure that your prims are in place and meshes aren't cutting through. It is also important that the poses you choose tell a story.

PEOPLE SPOTLIGHT

225

Falbala Fairey is a well known model, stylist, teacher, mentor, fashion producer, DJ, winner of several fashion titles and the general manager of Swank. This talented person also has the distinction of being an elf and an activist for the incorporation of fantasy races/creatures in the Second Life fashion scene. Windlight was able to sit down and discuss fashion, Second Life prejudice, and more with Falbala:

for myself, so I had to wait for around 2 years to create my own avatar and to enter Second Life on my own. Back then it took me 3 days to learn how to TP away from the starter Sim and that there exists more then just the one I was on. But to rescue myself a bit, in that 3 days, the first thing I learned was changing my own shape and I had enough time to recreate myself in a way I thought I would look good aka pretty. Well, I was a fully white alien with a horrible cat suit on, but I still thought I am the most pretty avatar in SL. *laughs*

WM: So tell our readers how did you first discover Second Life? What made you create and avatar and remain all of these years? WM: How did you become interested and involved in the FALBALA: First of all I want to Second Life fashion scene? thank you very much inviting me here for the interview. Its a great FALBALA: When I entered SL I was honor! like the most average citizens in here I think. I went to party, I met The first time I ever noticed about people, I started being a dancer. Second Life was, when my RL Then after trying several jobs like brother showed me his account DJ, Club manager, Role-player, etc. I back in 2006. He told me that I finally managed it to create a fully could play in here same as with my new RP Sim with some close "Sims", which I played before long friends, based on the movie time and that it would be quiet the AVATAR by James Cameron in same, just with real people from all January 2010. On this Sim I met a over the world. Sadly to this time I man, dressed like a Na'vi (the blue didn't had any Internet connection guys of the movie, for those who 226

who don't know) and told me if I ever worked as a model. There it basically started, as we started to chat and he showed me the first steps in the fashion world. He brought me to meet Mimmi Boa and Frolic Mills and some other people who were very famous to this time in the high fashion world and so I started to learn step by step to raise my own career. I went to enter contests, participated castings and got my first shows and agencies. WM: Have you always been an elf?

very low self-confidence. So People mostly acted with me like a little girl or teen and I hated that. Specially when I started to work and close to nobody took me serious or as a person with authority. So for SL I decided no cute avatar for me. When I started to be in fashion I was human looking as it got told me so. But already to that time on one of my very first shows I ever saw, there was a model who had tiny elf ears, more like a pixie and I thought to myself, oh yes awesome, here are fantasy creatures allowed!

What got blown away pretty fast FALBALA: No. Before I went into when I started to do some research the fashion world I always was very on this case and that everyone who interested in any possible fantasy isn't human would not go anycreature besides of being an elf. I where far and it seemed to be true. was a vampire, a demon, a Also that model with the ears I saw mermaid, a witch, but never an elf, on that one show vanished short as back in that time around after and since then it bugged me 2008/09 elves had the image of as I thought SL should be more just hugging trees and loving each open minded for any costumers on other. And I was so not into hug- this platform then just the high ging any trees. I wanted to be evil. raised skinny human models. But I Like I was in the most roles, when I didn't feel strong enough for going played on a RP Sim. Like a vampire the patriotic way and starting the or an assassin for example. This has fight against racism in SL for other a very simple reason out of my RL. I races/creatures then human and am a very young looking person kept being below the umbrella of with a very high voice and with a many thoughts, worries and doubts 227

about equality in the fashion world. For me discriminating someone because he wears something At this point I should maybe explain why I call this case "racism" and I different on his body then a normal am also pretty sure that there will human out of the fashion world is for me same like judging someone be some disagreeing with me, because he has a different skin taking this on kind of the same barrier like the still ongoing racism color or religion in RL. It will not in RL. And I already apologize if my distract anything if people are used try of explanation isn't that perfect to it as something fully normal, to see for example a furry on a runway because of my language barrier. wearing a formal dress or a vampire But for me it's pretty the same behavior, just with different races in a bikini with sunglasses and a surfboard. I am aware of the included, plus the ones we have out there in the RL world already. thoughts of fantasy races in the To discriminate someone because heads of people. Like if you mention an elf, people immediately he is a Neko and wears a tail, a think on "Lord of the Rings" elves vampire because of the teeth and or if they hear vampire, it brings the polish skin, an elf because of the ears or a furry because he looks them a picture of Dracula in front like an animal with the explanation of their eyes. But just to have a different race, doesn't mean it has that it would "DISCTRACT" the designers items who are supposed to suit the typical stereotype out of Hollywood movies. An elf can be to be shown, is for me just pure modern looking and also a furry racism and the hypocritical believing of someone who tries to isn't running around 24/7 in baggy pants and raver shirts and screams fake a life to himself having something like a "real" career, same "Yiffy!" everywhere he goes. That are stereotypes who are just as a RL model/designer/agency owner, what is very sad, as it shows wrong. how much people lost themselves in here and how many costumers Ok, to come back to the question about me being an elf from the they miss with this believing. As it is a fact, that still the most citizens of beginning, I have to admit, that I started wearing ears I think it was SL are fantasy people. 230

back in 2012/13 when I felt strong enough in my career to go out and find the biggest ears I could find on the whole grid and risk my career as a model for being an elf model and opening some doors for following models and also designers to get in time the chance to enter the high fashion world.

my ears, when it is "needed". In the first years I said yes of course, because I hoped that people will get used to it, as it was still so new to them. But it hurts every time I had to say yes actually, as I felt close to someone who is for example ebony, to be asked to use white makeup to fit in the job. Cutting my ears, as they are a part WM: I notice that in your fashion of my body is very hard, as I have images and in previous photos of to cut something from me who is you on the fashion runway, you me. Like cutting your hand off or remain as an elf, complete with ripping out your eye. It is different ears. Has this raised eyebrows in then changing a hair color or your the past? eye color as this can be done also in RL without any problems and FALBALA: Yes it does and it still can get back without any consedoes to be honest. When I first quences. Cutting a body part is not appeared in my blog pictures with like dyeing hair. that huge ears I got IMs from both sides. Some were happy about it, But to mention as well, in this 4 wished me good luck and that it years I got a lot of support also. will get accepted. Some told me Like my very first vendor AD ever that I would risk my whole image with ears where I was allowed from and career trying to be an elf as it Enzo Champagne, owner and is not liked to be seen and that I designer of Champagne Sparkling, would loose a lot of jobs with this. to keep them on and that was for But I made my decision already for me everything in that moment. me and I don't regret it till today When I asked him if I could keep that I made this decision. Sadly, them on and he said "YES!", I was even now after 4 years wearing this like in heaven and nothing going to ears, I still see and hear the worries stop me anymore. And it is every of agencies and designers asking time amazing when I get allowed me if I would be willing to "detach" to keep them on. Anyways if it's a 231

vendor picture, a magazine or a runway show. WM: I have friends who are non human in Second Life and they often report prejudices exist in various forms. For example some clubs in Second Life have a human only policy or a non furry policy. Obviously in Second Life we can be who we want to be. Have you encountered such prejudice being an elf in Second Life and in the fashion scene?

modern high fashion outfit, in a modern high fashion world and having the same chances like any other model on the grid. WM: What advice do you have for non human characters? How can they handle criticism or prejudice in Second Life?

FALBALA: I really hope that each one of you out there, who wants to be a high fashion model and being a different race, try it! Yes it will still be harder then maybe any other FALBALA: Yes, like I mentioned human model because human are before already, that seeing people slow to change what they were or races in stereotypes is something used to be for so long and got fully human I think. But yes, I preached to all the time. Give them mostly get offers now for shows the chance also to get used to you who are already based on being and just blow them away with your fantasy or elfish to fit in the talent and effort to be a good, stereotype with telling me, they creative and hard working model think I fit in there perfectly. Well like every other model who starts yes I maybe do, but my goal isn't it their career. And I promise I will not to fit in fantasy shows who are give up to fight for all of us opening meant to have fantasy creatures the doors of being accepted and included anyways with the typical respected as who we are and what medieval clothing fallen directly out our passion tells us to follow. Being of the last Hobbit movie. What a high fashion model in SL. doesn't mean that I don't like fantasy shows. I love fantasy shows, WM: Do you think the fashion but then the effect I want to bring industry is more accepting of non human characters on the runway? to the audience is getting lost. In being a fantasy race in SL, in a 232

FALBALA: I think in the last 4 years a lot moved forward. Still not like I wished it to be but it became a lot better. I even see high fashion designers using elf ears on their vendor ADs now or letting an elf on a runway if its a normal modern show. It became better! But it is still not there, specially also for other races who are out there besides of elves. Time will tell if it will at least here in SL become a world without any discrimination or racism one day. Hope never dies.
