Welcome to the May 2016 Edition of Windlight Magazine! This issue will feature Rebeca Brashly, Peace is a Choice Gallery, The Embryo Sim, Kat Feldragonne, Reven Rosca, and Netera Landar. The Edge brings you fashion articles on how to style in the age of mesh, men’s fashion, and a special interview with the new Miss Virtual LatinoAmerica 2016. May is a special month for me especially as my two small real life children will celebrate their 1 year and 2 year birthdays and I am approaching a birthday milestone myself in May. I will turn 39. This means one year before the big 40. While some may approach the age of 40 with dread and have a mid life crisis, I am thankful to be alive, particularly after having some life threatening experiences while being deployed as a US Marine officer. Life is something we should never take for granted and we should cherish always. The same goes for Second Life, as you never know what surprises that come your way. My word of advice is to be open to change and opportunity. Change is a good thing. Windlight is approaching a milestone, as we are soon to reach the one year anniversary mark, look for more information very soon about our anniversary plans! WM: You have created some really amazing and memorable pieces of artwork in Second Life. Tell our readers how did you first discover Second Life and why did you decide to create art here? REBECA: I first read about sl in Italian magazine "Grazia" ... its funny because that is not really my choice of magazines... sometimes I buy it because my grandma used to read it and it reminds me of her.

Peace is a Choice Gallery has existed in Second Life for over 7 years. The curator and owner of the gallery is TheDove Rhode. Windlight was able to sit down and talk with “Dove� about art and her gallery.

WM: Reven you are a staple in the original fully perm mesh sector of the Second Life economy. Tell our readers how did you first discover Second Life and what made you start creating here? REVEN: I was a regular at a Norwegian discussion forum that might be described as a community more than a forum. The owners of this website bought a sim, and a whole bunch of us rezzed at the same time. Only a few of us stayed, and some, like me are stuck!

REVEN: *laughs* That was exactly what I did after the jewelry disaster. PRIME was born one of the Fridays when the grid was closed, the monkeys banged on things, teleports were down and nothing worked except local chat and auto return.

I've made interactive furniture the old-fashioned way, with prims and sculpties since 2008, but was never able to wrap my head around making my own sculpties. I was also a rather late adopter of mesh. Can you believe that? WM: Much has been said about how creators now have to spend their time creating in various real life software packages and the "old way" of creating items in world is lost. Do you think this is the case? REVEN: Haven't we done that all the time? Creators have always used Photoshop and similar applications for texturing, and sculpties were more often than not made outside SL. Modelers like myself tend to spend more time in our 3D applications, but the job isn't done when the model is ready for export. Texturing must be done in world to get it right, and is what takes the most time together with assembly, scripting and animating.

“Look, Skippy, Ships!!!” It isn’t just my little friend who finds ships fascinating. Second Life residents have been fascinated with water and water travel since its inception. In the early days of SL, all boats (sailing or otherwise) used vehicle scripts such as those still in use in SL cars today. True sailing began in June 2005 on the SIM of Gray, where Kanker Greenacre built the first real SL Sailboat, the Flying Tako. What made it real was that it relied 102


upon SL Wind. Kanker formed the SLSF (Second Life Sailing Federation.) In August of 2005, Mark Twain White founded the Starboards Yacht Club with Nber Medici. Kanker Greenacre became a charter member. "Announcing STARBOARDS YACHT CLUB. SLSF Skippers and friends are invited to check out the new Starboards Yacht Club on the Hollywood sim. Starboards Y.C. and the adjoining pub and marina will be a gathering place for SLSF skippers and all in SL who love sailing.� 103

What began as the Starboards Yacht Club on the Hollywood SIM soon because a collection of SIMs known as United Sailing SIMs. [Note: other Yacht clubs and sailing groups began to form across the grid, following SYC’s opening.] In June of 2007, Mark Twain White reported on Treet TV that United Sailing SIMs numbered 47 SIMs. In April of 2010, Douglas Green r reported in an interview with Mark Twain White that United Sailing SIMs numbered 140, with White and his partner, Nber Medici, owning 37 of them. The Blake Sea was established in early 2009 as the first private – public partnership between the residents and Linden labs. As of 2013, the Blake Sea United Sailing SIMs numbered 150. The Private Regions of United Sailing SIMs are connected to the Second Life Mainland, across the Blake Sea, to Nautilus and Satori. Last night I sat down and had a chat with Netera Landar and her Second Life partner ALEXA: Inder Destiny, who are both very much into books and writing. Although Netera is the focus of the interview, Alex had some interesting things to say so I thought I would include them too. VOYAGES WITH VEE: EMBRYO

If you’re looking for a place with minimal landscape to take some great photos then plan a visit to Embryo. I was out wandering and came across the sim listed in an old destination guide. The SURL will land you on a sparse stretch of beach, glaring white sand, surrounded by what looks like a high tide of realistic looking sea water gently flowing across. I am truly a sucker for any SL place with realistic looking water. While exploring I realized that there are two elements depicted on the sim. The first was art, which was depicted as either an integral part of 143


the structure or played a major role in its’ appearance. The second element was movement in general and as part of the art. For example, if you look towards the Southwest you’ll see what appears to be a flock of dark birds circling the remains of a ruined building. Look closer and you’ll see that in addition to the birds there is a string of ebony chairs rising into the sky mimicking the flock. Below is the swirling water washing over your feet, capturing light from the sun above. To the Southeast is a bright little cabin. At first glance it looked like a greenhouse because of the large glass windows and ceiling panels with vines and plants visible throughout. Bright, colorful blossoms surround the cabin and flow into the interior as does the water that has flooded the first level. Circling above are bright golden birds flitting in and out of a group of white gulls which are frozen in time. Outside is a little garden area with a ladder located under a large tree.

The ladder has some lovely animations, perfect for taking photos. Moving along to the Northwest, past the piano and over the balloon bridge, you will arrive back on the main strip of land where the lighthouse is located. From the exterior it appears to be a typical lighthouse, but open the door and you’ll enter a cozy little nest of a room. Nest is a good description because it feels more like a treehouse than a lighthouse. Tree limbs and vines jutting through the spiral staircase leading up to the warning lamp above. There a lifetime of living packed into that little space along with little touches of whimsy, art, and more birds. Antique carousel hummingbirds, tiny bluebirds perched by the bed, and the white gulls surrounding the entrance add to the atmosphere, but these are all dwarfed by the giant shadows of seagulls circling in a downward spiral across the lighthouse wall. If you climb the staircase to the top make yourself comfortable on the chair provided, relax, and enjoy the surrounding view.

In the Northwest corner is a kimono shop called Tomoto owned by Tomo Wachter (who is also the main contact person for the sim). It’s a beautiful little building with little lanterns floating on the water. While I was visiting I saw several photographers and models taking advantage of the region. It should be noted that you don’t have to join a group to rez your objects or props, but please be respectful and clean up after yourself.

You might be curious as to why the sim is called Embryo... I know I was. Visit the sim for yourself and take a peek inside the lighthouse. You’ll find the answer there. WM

I always keep my eyes open for original, well made and creative mesh pieces. Mesh accessories or pieces can be used in lots of imaginative ways, especially if they are not rigged mesh, and can be repositioned and/or resized. You can move them to other parts of the body, semi sink them n, resize them bigger or smaller. Unrigged mod pieces have all the flexibility of old style sculpt pieces. Lyrical B!zarre have very useful and maginative items for instance, either as part of outfits or separate pieces, and being full perm you can texture them and play with them to your hearts content. You can group them together too, to make new and interesting amalgamations (I am particularly fond of doing this with headpieces for instance) , and generally just play and see what visually works.

You can be ncredibly imaginative with how you put accessories to an outfit, I once used a wrap of wire around my neck and wrists to work with a dress and give it another dimension. Your accessories can take an outfit in many different directions, or bring out different features of the design. It is very possible to style creatively with mesh, and the increasing richness of original mesh clothing and accessories is making that ever more possible. At the end of the day, a true stylist can take something, anything, and reinvent it, put things together in new, fresh and surprising ways. For some models it is the first time you have done a tryout, or maybe a show. All in all, most of us within the community has had that rush at one time or another. The rush wears off and then over time you come to see a certain dilemma, the lack of art in men's fashion.

Within Second Life, we can all influence fashion. I have found the elements difficult to achieve at times. In those times when I have had to resort to using women's pieces, to complete the look that I am needing. A way of making up for that is to dig in, contact creator's and sometimes ask for changes.

There are many elements that go into men's fashion. There is first your shape, your sense of style and most important, your individuality. These things are necessary to be complete as when it comes to style for men and women alike.

I try to make sure that I ask for something that is new. Sometimes using eye catching colors and also meshes that are not the norm. This is important for us as consumers as well as artists. In order for others to see us as we see ourselves within our own surreal world we need to show that we want these changes. We also need to show our interest in the processes that it takes to get there. It is a journey we all have to take to make it happen. My passion for writing is just as important to me as my own sense of style. Love it or leave it, we are all different. I hope that all that read this enjoy and also take it to heart.
