Welcome Although the new year started out with a crisis in our nation’s capital and a heightened pandemic, we realize there is also much to be thankful for. Friendship, fellowship and family are at the top of the list. Despite the current challenges, Windsor remains committed to providing amenities, programs and events that allow our Members to connect in meaningful and safe ways with the important people in their lives. It has been heartwarming to see the return of so many of our Member families who are enjoying all that Windsor has to offer. The technical nuances of our recently refurbished golf course are being put to the test with many Members honing their skills. And those new to the sport are being introduced to the benefits to mind and body of this popular sport. See page 4-5 for details on the course’s extensive refurbishment. In January, we were excited to open our newest amenity, the Beach Club Cabana Bar. This beautiful open-air casual dining spot offers light bites and breathtaking ocean-to-pool views. The North Village WINDSOR’S NEWEST NEIGHBORHOOD The 30-year vision Windsor’s founders had for its development and completion continues to become a reality. Blending seamlessly into Windsor’s existing Village, a new neighborhood is being planned for 47 acres in the northwest portion of the Windsor property. The North Village neighborhood will have 34 homesites with the majority of lots being 90 feet by 150 feet. All homesites will enjoy sweeping lake views. The neighborhood plan will feature 12 acres of open park spaces as well as another 12-plus acres of lakes and water features. A network of nature trails will meander under the shade of the area’s established natural landscape. With its proximity to the Indian River Lagoon, the developer is also seeking approval for canoe and kayak access. late 2019 is an unqualified success. Other changes were more subtle.

“All great courses possess an overall mood or rhythm that engenders feelings of anticipation mixed with nostalgia in most players when they reflect on the course.” – Robert Trent Jones Jr.

Speaking from his home in Hanalei, Kauai, where he had been quarantining,

“The golf design business is in an era of retro thinking, with more low-profile,

helm of superintendent Jason Schoonover, Windsor’s putting surfaces are consistently firm, fast and true. Jones said he had to “rethink” some of the dips, swales and spill-offs around the greens to give players more recovery options.

In the wake of the makeover, the bunkers at Windsor are more visually striking and dramatic. The bunkers on the left side of the first hole, their flashed faces upswept into a sandy version of a cresting ocean wave, are a good example. Jones said that while most golfers view bunkers as hazards to be avoided, he often uses them to signpost the holes, as “lighthouses” or aiming points to assist players in tacking their way around the course. “When we built the golf course,” Jones continued, “we moved a lot of sand—calciferous sand—to create features” on what had been a nearly flat former citrus grove. To this day, he is especially fond of the firm-packed sandy cart paths and the expanses of rust-orange coquina sand found in outlying areas. “We approach every golf course project with a series of fundamental design principles that guide our work,” Jones states on his company’s website. “The pillar of our design philosophy is that every project is site specific . . . our courses are always recognizable for their suitability to the landscape and climate they’re set in. We are committed to designing golf courses that appear to have been shaped by the same forces that created the surrounding landforms.”

Commenting on golf course architecture in general (and Windsor in particular), Jones said, “All great courses possess an overall mood or rhythm that engenders feelings of anticipation mixed with nostalgia in most players when they reflect on the course. The architect produces this effect in a fashion similar to the way in which a great composer creates a symphony. Each hole is deftly adapted to the site’s natural attributes. A great course also has balance, which derives from the melding, in a pleasant order, of holes of varying degrees of difficulty. For me, the hallmark of a great course resides in a golfer’s ability to remember and visualize all the holes after playing the course once.” Windsor’s design maestro may have updated a few stanzas but he left his subtropical concerto intact. It presents a firm but fair test to players at all ability levels, it’s an aesthetic delight, and each hole is distinctive. Like the community itself, the golf course was conceived to be environmentally sensitive, with a distinct sense of place. The renovation has tuned the instruments in Windsor’s ensemble, all 18 of them, to a perfect pitch.
