WELCOME I hope you have had an enjoyable summer and are experiencing pleasant fall weather as we head into the holiday season. At Windsor we are preparing for the return of our Members after a busy summer of new home construction, making enhancements to the community and planning for a number of new projects including this summer’s total golf course renovation. See page 7 for information on this exciting project in collaboration with Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the course's original designer. SIR MICHAEL CRAIG-MARTIN TO EXHIBIT AT WINDSOR The Gallery at Windsor will be home to an exciting exhibition opening in January featuring leading British artist Sir Michael Craig-Martin. Titled Present Sense, the Windsor exhibition will be the artist’s most comprehensive in the United States to date and will include recent paintings, sculptures and prints. The exhibition comprises more than 35 works and will extend beyond the walls of The Gallery onto the grounds of Windsor. This will be the second annual exhibition at Windsor presented in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, London, as part of a three-year curatorial partnership launched in 2018. It will be the first exhibition of outdoor sculpture to be presented at Windsor. Born in 1941 in Dublin, Ireland, Craig-Martin moved to the United States with his family, spending most of his childhood in Washington D.C. He studied Fine Art at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture from 1961-66. After his studies, Craig-Martin was offered a teaching position at the Bath Academy of Art, moving back to the UK in 1966. Craig-Martin taught at Goldsmiths College School of Art, London, from 1974 to 1988 and from 1994 to 2000. During this time he became a powerful influence on a generation of his students who would become known as the young British artists, including Julian Opie, Damien Hirst, Liam Gillick, Gary Hume, Mat Collishaw, Sarah Lucas, Fiona Rae, Michael Landy and Ian Davenport. Throughout his career Craig-Martin has produced work in a variety of media, which explore the nature and basic principles of visual language and perception through the use of everyday objects, images, and materials. Indeed, his entire oeuvre has become a comprehensive record of the objects of our time with a recent focus on the technological objects that dominate and define contemporary living including laptops, iPhones and wireless headphones. His work over the last 30 years is easily recognized by his hallmark style of rigorously precise line drawing combined with his characteristic use of intensely vibrant colors. The program for the three-year curatorial partnership between the Royal Academy of Arts and The Gallery at Windsor which began with Grayson Perry RA has been selected by The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, Windsor co-founder and Creative Director for The Gallery at Windsor, Christopher Le Brun, President of the Royal Academy, and Tim Marlow, Artistic Director of the Royal Academy. An exhibition by a third Royal Academician will take place in 2020. The exhibition will open January 29 and run through April 25. WINDSOR’S SERENGETI MAJOR RENOVATION PLANNED Windsor’s extraordinary golf course is a visual masterpiece and a pleasure to play. The 18-hole links style course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., a legendary golf course architect. Windsor’s course is a hallmark project of Mr. Jones and is among the few links-style courses in the United States. Often referred to as “Windsor’s Serengeti,” the greens of the golf course boast an undulating panorama of native trees bordering gentle, rolling fairways, unobstructed by houses. It’s a splendor matched only by the challenge and unique subtleties of the course. With no tee times, the par 72 course's nuances are appreciated more and more with every round played. Now Windsor plans to provide an even more exciting golf experience for Members with a total renovation of the course beginning late spring of 2019. The course will re-open early November 2019. “It is an exciting time for golf at Windsor and an honor to be working with Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and Bruce Charlton, President and Chief Design Officer, to recapture some of the original subtleties of the course with a goal of significantly enhancing the golf experience for Windsor Members,” said Jeff Steele, Windsor’s Director of Golf. The project will encompass more than 120 acres with a complete re-grassing of all playing surfaces and practice areas and installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system that will offer better coverage while reducing overall water consumption. Also installed will be a new sub-air system that will greatly impact greens’ drainage. There will also be a reestablishment of the vegetation diversity of the natural planting areas, especially in the littoral shelf areas located in the water hazards throughout the course. As a recipient of many industry awards and honors, Mr. Jones's team knows how to design a well-crafted course that is comfortable in its natural environment. “The entire team at Robert Trent Jones II is delighted to have an opportunity to recapture the design intent and update golf holes in concert with today’s game," said Bruce Charlton. "Windsor has been a great source of pride for our organization since its inception and we are very excited to be polishing this gem."
