Kicking off this season was the opening of our third exhibition in the curatorial partnership with London’s renowned Whitechapel Gallery. It is quite an honor to be displaying the works of legendary American artist Jasper Johns. On page 3 we’ve included a recap of the opening weekend festivities, and we also share with you some of the rich history of our own special gallery.

Jasper Johns Exhibit Opens To the delight of the international art world already gathered at Art Basel Miami Beach, The Gallery at Windsor in December opened an exclusive exhibition of works by legendary artist Jasper Johns, who once said, “Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it.”

“This year’s exhibition of works by Jasper Johns reinforces our longstanding mission of presenting work by the leading artists of our time,” says The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, cofounder and creative director of Windsor and former Lt. Governor of Ontario.

This well-spoken artist, who first gained notoriety for his laconic painted collage of the American flag, is considered to be one of the most influential American artists of his generation. He is so admired among collectors that his favored and rare large-scale paintings are quite difficult to acquire. Even today, at age 83, he continues to experiment, pushing the boundaries of printmaking.

The site-specific exhibition at The Gallery at Windsor is the third in Windsor’s three-year collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery of London, where Johns had his first UK show in 1964. The Windsor show is curated by Whitechapel Gallery Director Iwona Blazwick and ULAE Director Bill Goldston in partnership with the artist and Mrs. Weston. The collection shown at Windsor features “the body,” which is a recurring theme in Johns’ work and, Blazwick says, “The silhouettes and figures in his lithographs, etchings and aquatints evoke performance, process, narrative and memory.”

“Jasper Johns: Shadow and Substance” includes more than 30 lithographs and etchings created with Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) print studio from the 1980s to the present.

Although the exhibition officially opened on December 8, Windsor Members were invited to an earlier private viewing with a reception and guided tour by Blazwick, who offered fascinating curatorial insights much like those expressed in the show’s accompanying catalogue: “Throughout his career Johns has juxtaposed the logical progressions of pure maths or the Euclidean properties of geometry with irrational, emotional and mortal humanity.” As attendees mingled and admired the innovative pieces on display, Blazwick pointed

out many of the themes and influences in Johns’ work such as the Pablo Picasso painting of the Minotaur moving his house, with its cartload of symbols. Blazwick referred to the catalogue, which explains that “The painting becomes symbolic of a life; the Minotaur is the artist or art itself, a powerful and essentially liberating force. Its spirit lives on in the work of Jasper Johns; in these prints the Minotaur’s ladder is an armature, a means of ascent and an acknowledgement of influence.” The Jasper Johns exhibit wraps up the “Whitechapel Gallery at Windsor” series scheduled each December for the past three years to coincide with Art Basel, a premier art show in Miami. The first exhibition in the collaboration showcased the colorful works of Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes and, in 2012, Windsor displayed the provocative works of Romanian twins Gert and Uwe Tobias. The current Jasper Johns exhibit is on view through April 30.

Although the exciting curatorial collaboration between London’s Whitechapel Gallery and The Gallery at Windsor has garnered the community extra attention recently, art and culture have always been central to Windsor.

The current show featuring Jasper Johns is part of a three-year curatorial partnership that allowed London’s Whitechapel Gallery to curate a solo show of an important artist at the Gallery at Windsor. The exhibitions, which were set to coincide with Art Basel Miami Beach, featured artists at different stages in their careers.

“We truly believe that towns and cities cannot thrive without these activities to animate our lives,” says Windsor’s Creative Director, the Hon. Hilary M. Weston, who co-founded the seaside village with her husband Galen. The Gallery at Windsor was founded by the Westons’ daughter Alannah in January 2002. It is an independent art space at the heart of the community, with ambitions from the start to showcase important works of art by imaginative and relevant artists. It hasn’t disappointed. The gallery, which is home to a wonderful collection of works from the George Weston Collection, has developed a significant program of temporary exhibitions since it first opened with “The Beach,” which featured photography by legendary documentary photographers Jacques Henri Lartigue and Robert Capa as well as modern masters David Hockney and John Baldessari.

The following year The Gallery at Windsor displayed “The Family,” a show focused on post-sixties photographers who have made a significant body of work on the subject, including Nan Goldin, Thomas Struth, Tina Barney and Diane Arbus. Over the years the gallery has showcased the works of many celebrated artists including Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Ed Ruscha, Peter Doig, Alex Katz and Jim Denevan. In 2011, The Gallery at Windsor exhibited more than 20 major paintings and works on paper by

In addition to showing international quality exhibitions, The Gallery at Windsor also hosts artists in residence. Past artists include: self-taught ceramist Fiamma Montagu; fine art photographer Hope Sandrow; and photographer Tom Craig. The Gallery at Windsor is part of Windsor’s Cultural Art Programme, which encourages all Windsor Members to participate in the arts. Past events include painting, ceramic and photography classes, guest lecturers and art tours. The gallery, open to the public by appointment, has strong ties with leading international galleries and the nearby Vero Beach Museum of Art as well as local schools and colleges.

COMMEMORATIVE EVENT POSTER ARTIST DEREK GORES In the hands of most people, a pile of tattered newsprint, used magazines, maps and schematics would be trash on its way to the recycling bin. But in the hands of artist Derek Gores, it becomes art. Magnificent, thoughtful, eye-catching art. Gores has gained national attention for his “torn paper collage” works on canvas. His fine art canvases are exhibited in galleries worldwide including Thinkspace in Los Angeles, Butler Goode in Sydney, Australia, and recently at Scope Art Fair during Art Basel Miami. Six large original pieces by Gores, commissioned by the Orlando Magic and the City of Orlando, hang at the Amway Center in downtown Orlando. In 2013, he was the official artist for the Kentucky Derby. In December, Windsor unveiled the commemorative poster Gores created for this season’s Charity Polo Cup at Windsor. The 30-inch by 40-inch piece features a polo player striking the ball on the Windsor polo field with Windsor’s distinctive architecture visible in the background. The collage is constructed out of photos, maps and various print materials from Windsor’s archives.

The Rhode Island School of Design graduate was honored to have his work selected for the Manifest Hope DC exhibit coinciding with the presidential inauguration in 2009. In a 2010 exhibition in London he was named “One of the 40 important artists of the New Contemporary Movement.”

“In the art, I’ve tried to capture the athleticism and elegance of the sport in this gorgeous setting,” Gores says. “Take a closer look and you’ll see familiar favorite elements from throughout Windsor.”

Gores’ poster for the Windsor Charity Polo Cup will be for sale online and at the February 15 event. A limited edition also will be produced and signed by the artist and the polo players. The original piece will be auctioned off during the event luncheon.

The Melbourne, Florida, artist credits his success to many years of work and artistic exploration, along with an interest in history and nature. He says he started by drawing things in real life and also things he imagined, exploring painting and sculpture, while studying architecture, cultures, music and more.

“It is quite an honor to be the Official Artist of the 2014 Windsor Charity Polo Cup,” Gores says. “A chance to create art benefiting such worthy national and local causes simply could not be passed up.”
