Lovedale Long Lunch Lures Locals for 30-Year Celebrations
WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER
One of the Hunter region’s most iconic and longest-running food and wine events, the Lovedale Long Lunch, is marking its 30th anniversary from 18 to 19 May, and everyone is invited to the celebration!
The Lovedale Long Lunch is a progressive-style lunch held over two days, where some of the Hunter Valley’s leading chefs team up with six of Lovedale’s finest wineries to offer guests fabulous food, great wine, and live music alfresco amongst the vineyards.
The six host wineries and restaurants/caterers for the Lovedale Long Lunch 2024 are Allandale Winery and Twine Restaurant; Emma's Cottage Vineyard and Esca Bimbadgen Restaurant; Gartelmann Wines and Deck Café Lovedale; Saltire Estate and Hunter Valley Catering; Sandalyn Estate and Peterson House Restaurant Cuvée; and Tatler Wines and Tatler Tapas.
Matt Dillow, owner and chef of Gartelmann Wines and The Deck Café, Lovedale, has been involved with the Lovedale Long Lunch since 2010. He loves working on the event and the opportunity it gives his staff to showcase what they can do.
“We are thrilled to celebrate our 30th anniversary by hosting a fabulous celebration for our guests, presenting some of the Hunter’s finest food and wine at some of our best boutique wineries. We’ve been doing this since 1994 and have all the facilities and the formula fined-tuned so guests don’t have to worry about a thing except having a great time amongst the vineyards.”
The event has evolved from a few trestle tables on the lawn in 1994 to a highlight on the region’s food and wine calendar, attracting over 10,000 people annually. It has put the area of Lovedale on the map, creating an identity and building awareness of it as a sub-region of the Hunter. This is a responsibility that the Lovedale Long Lunch committee takes very seriously.
Riley Hodgetts, committee member and Marketing and Events Coordinator at Allandale Winery, one of the original wineries that founded the event, talks of its evolution.
“The event has always had the primary objective of showcasing the wonderful food and boutique wineries of the Lovedale area so that visitors will return outside of the event itself to explore our offerings more fully,” said Riley.
Following the pandemic pause, there was a changing of the guard on the committee, and it provided an obvious opportunity to take a hard look at whether or not the event was meeting our objectives and visitor expectations. The result was a rebrand and refresh that we’re all very excited about.
“Our new brand has a vintage flavour with pops of contemporary colour and is much more visually engaging. It was developed by Sneddon & Co who understood we wanted to honour our past but move forward with renewed focus on our primary objectives. We’ve also listened to our visitors and made changes to improve the overall visitor experience.”
Riley refers to changes that include the shift to a more bespoke, highquality food and wine experience, with limited tickets and a reduction in the choice of wineries to two out of the six per visit rather than three, cutting
travel time and the number of people on the roads trying to get from one place to another.
“We’ve refined the existing concept without losing its heart,” said Riley.
Matt Dillow agrees, saying, “We don’t want the event to be so big that people can’t enjoy it. Our set-up improves every year, and this year, we’ve looked at the speed of service, the smooth running, and the overall visitor experience—ensuring no one has to line up for long periods. It will be more inviting and relaxed, and we’re pumped to be doing it.”
It takes an estimated one hundred people per winery to staff the event and manage all the logistics – that’s around 600 people.
“There’s a lot of infrastructure to set up,” said Riley.
“Road signs, landscaping, marquees, toilets, not to mention the preparation of the bar and restaurant. There are only about three months every year when we don’t have to mention the words ‘Lovedale Long Lunch’; the rest of the year is spent planning and preparation.
“The knock-on effect to the rest of the region is enormous and we’re very conscious of it. Our neighbours have to put up with a lot of traffic for the week leading up to the event and then the week of pack-down afterwards. But it’s all about making Lovedale succeed, and that includes the businesses that aren’t directly participating in the festival.”
Indeed, accommodation providers, produce suppliers, other cellar doors, and tourism operators all benefit from the weekend's influx of visitors, with an estimated 2,000 people staying for one or more nights.
“One example of how it affects other local businesses is the fact that most of the chefs try to use local produce,” said Matt.
“Binnorie Dairy is literally down the road, and we use at least 120 kilograms of their award-winning cheeses. Multiply that by a likelihood of six for each of our venues, and that’s an enormous impact on just one local business. It feels great to be able to offer that support.”
It's widely agreed that most visitors to the Hunter Valley cellar doors and restaurants are primarily from Sydney and further afield, but this festival bucks that trend quite significantly.
At Allandale Winery, the owners and chefs
Twine Restaurant, Daniel and Meagan Teggins, are providing a choice of mains between the Rock Lobster and King Prawn ravioli with heirloom tomatoes, Allandale Semillon garlic butter sauce topped with shaved pecorino cheese with a wine match of Allandale Aged Semillon or the slow roasted pork belly with crackle puff, poached pink lady apple, garlic butter roast chats and red wine jus with wine match of Allandale Dry Rosé. There’s a vegan option of Panang Curry with a rich sauce, silken tofu, garden-fresh vegetables & fragrant Jasmin rice with a wine match of Allandale Lombardo. The dessert option is a Gin & Tonic cheesecake with meringue crumb, citrus swirl, and a wine match of Allandale Sparkling Gewürztraminer. The cheese plate is Lovedale’s very own Binnorie Dairy top-selling brie and smoked King Island cheddar with house-made pickle and crackers with a wine match of Allandale Chardonnay. Live music will be by Kaleidoscope Dream.
said Riley.
“About 75% of our festival-goers are local, from the Greater Newcastle, Hunter Valley and Central Coast areas,”
“It’s an anomaly that we think stems from the fact that it falls into the events and festivals category. Even though we’re only 35 minutes from Newcastle since the bypass was completed in 2014, and Lovedale is literally the gateway to the Hunter, locals generally don’t think to pop up for the day and enjoy a cellar door visit or lunch at a restaurant unless it’s a special occasion.
“Because it’s close enough for a day trip, people tend to put it off, but an event like this draws people in.”
Tickets are available for either Saturday, Sunday, or both, and you can choose to visit two of the six participating wineries with your group. A continuous shuttle bus will run between venues, or you can organise your own. There are also many other local activities, from horse-riding to hot air ballooning, day spas, or golf, to add to your Long Lunch itinerary.
Tickets are $129 for Saturday and include two main meals, one dessert or cheese plate and one souvenir wine-tasting glass; $79 for Sunday, including one main meal, one dessert or cheese plate and one souvenir wine-tasting glass; and $169 for both days including three main meals, two desserts or cheese plates and one souvenir wine tasting glass, plus booking fee. When booking your tickets, you will have a choice of three start times, either 9.30 am, 10.00 am or 10.30 am, and then you can move on to your next venue between 12 noon and 2 pm.
Emma’s Cottage and Head Chef of Esca Bimbadgen Restaurant, Keira Madely, will be dishing up mains of roast chicken thigh with cous cous, chickpeas, preserved lemon and smoked pepper with a wine match of Alter Wines Chardonnay or the Master Stock braised pork neck with pickled slaw, chilli jam, crispy onions and coriander with wine match of Alter Wines Shiraz Pinot. Her vegetarian option is roasted cauliflower with cous cous, chickpeas, preserved lemon and smoked pepper with a wine match of Alter Wines Semillon. For dessert, there’s baked cheesecake with salted caramel, macadamia, and strawberry compote washed down with a wine match of Alter Wines Sparkling Blanc. The cheese platter comprises a triple cream brie with quince, smoked almonds and lavosh with wine match of Alter Wines Late Harvest Semillon. Enjoy this spread listening to live music by Anna Weatherup and her Full Band.
With his famous magpie mascot running around, chef and owner of Gartelmann Wines and The Deck Cafe Lovedale, Matt Dillow, is serving up saffron and preserved lemon arancini with snapper, prawns, baby calamari, tomatoes and zucchini ribbons with a wine match of Gartelmann’s Semillon or a Spanish pulled pork, spiced chorizo and white bean cassoulet with honey and cumin yoghurt with wine match of Gartelmann Shiraz. His vegan option is a spiced white bean cassoulet, grilled Mediterranean vegetables, honey and cumin yoghurt. For dessert, you can enjoy chocolate, muscat and almond fudge cake, berry coulis, and vanilla mascarpone, and the cheese platter will consist of brie, cheddar and blue cheese with crackers, rhubarb compote, fig date and walnut roll. Local musos Tre Soul Band and Kazzie Trio Band will be playing non-stop.
At Saltire Estate, Head Chef of Hunter Valley Catering Nick Vivian will be plating up salmon fillet with crab and pea risotto croquette, tomato salsa, lemon saffron aioli, and parmesan crumble with wine matches of Saltire Vermentino or Saltire Sauvignon Blanc or you might prefer the southern fried chicken on buttermilk waffle, mash potato, maple gravy, liquid cheese and coleslaw with a wine match of Saltire Organic Shiraz. Nick’s vegetarian option is a ratatouille tart with beetroot and white bean skordillia, grilled halloumi and dukkha complemented by a
wine match of Saltire Organic Rosé. His dessert is cinnamon churros with chocolate and salty caramel sauce dippers with a wine match of Moscato, and his cheese platter is the Hunter Valley cheese plate with Binnorie triple cream brie, home-made fig and balsamic jam, water crackers with wine match of Prosecco. Soundabout and DJ Whispa will provide live music.
Over at Sandalyn, Chad Pridue, Head Chef of Peterson House Restaurant Cuvée, will be dishing up housemade lamb massaman pie with buttery mashed potato paired with Savannah Estate Cabernet Sauvignon or a barramundi fillet on a fine-cut ratatouille and baby rocket with the recommended wine Peterson’s Cuvée Chardonnay. The vegetarian option is pumpkin penne pasta with local honey, and macadamias washed down with Peterson House Sparkling Prosecco Rosé. The dessert is house-made doughnuts, Nutella, and strawberries with Peterson House Sparkling Pink Blush. The cheese plate is warm brie with balsamic roasted tomatoes, house-made dukkah, and crackers, served with the recommended wine, Peterson’s Wines Botrytis Semillon or Shiraz. Live music is by Phonic.
Last, but by no means least, is Katy Carruthers, Chef at Tatler Tapas at Tatler Wines, who will be serving mains that include Greek Saganaki prawns in a rich tomato salsa sprinkled with Feta on a bed of rice with recommended wine match of Tatler Semillon or slow-cooked, grassfed, beef cheeks with red wine jus & mashed potato on a bed of fresh baby spinach with wine match of Tatler Shiraz. Her vegetarian option is a lentil, chickpea & vegetable chilli, with cheese and guacamole served on corn chips with wine match of Tatler Pinot Gris. Dessert is a classic sticky date pudding in butterscotch sauce with double cream matched with Tatler Frizzante Semillon, and her cheese plate is brie and cheddar with apricots, almonds, crackers and relish paired with Tatler Shiraz. Live music will be by Hornet and The Years.
With mouthwatering menus and a range of wines from awardwinning wineries on offer, why not join in the 30th birthday celebrations for this signature Hunter tradition of high-quality regional food, wine and hospitality in a stunning vineyard setting? All the details can be found at www.lovedalelonglunch.com.au but hurry, tickets are selling fast.

Funky Flavours and Quirky Vibes POKOLBIN CIDER HOUSE
WORDS LIANE MORRIS
Overlooking the Great Dividing Range in a stunning Hunter Valley setting is the region’s one and only authentic cider house. Pokolbin Cider House is putting a winemaking slant on cider production and creating a boutique craft drinking experience that offers an appealing alternative to wine tasting. Add in some quirky vibes, funky music, and a sensationally relaxed outdoor space, and you’ll have a winning formula for your next visit to the Hunter.
Jacki Dunn grew up in Branxton and began her working life in retail for Sanity Music, where she stayed for 15 years. A chance meeting with Michael Partridge, Petersons Wines' Sommelier at the time, led to her joining the team in cellar door sales at Peterson’s. She quickly moved through wine club management and then sales at Savannah Estate.
Fast-forward nine years, and today, she is the Operations Manager for Pokolbin Cider House and the Petersons Wines Singapore Cellar Door.
“The cider started out as a side venture, a fun thing to do back in 2011,” said Jacki.
“It hadn’t been taken very seriously, and during COVID, management decided to close it down. Colin Peterson asked me what I thought, and I felt quite passionate about it. I thought they were mad to shut it down because it’s the only cider house in the region. He gave me an opportunity to make it work—and we have.”
It's the winemaking equipment and expertise that has led to the development of the cider product range. It began with a traditional apple cider when the team created the original Classic Draught Cider, followed by Raspberry Cranberry Cider. It wasn’t long before they added the ‘sparkling’ with secondary fermentation and aging in the bottle just like a
sparkling wine, creating the Vintage Cider with a complex, yeasty and sophisticated flavour. The range developed further with Grape Cider, another winemaking twist and a Sweet Spiced Cider followed by Pear Ciders – Perry. Since then, there’s been a cask aged and Vintage Perry and to date, there are nine different flavours of cider available. The range changes each year and depends on what fruit is available, with most of the fruit coming from Orange.
Visitors to the Pokolbin Cider House can enjoy tasting paddles of four different ciders or two ciders and two wines. The kids are well catered for with juice paddles so that they can join in the fun with mum and dad. They also serve Dusty Miner Craft Beers and Cider Tails – cocktails made with cider. If you get hungry there are cheese boards, ploughman’s lunches and margherita or pepperoni pizzas. Of course, there’s also the famous Sabor Dessert Bar on the same site – a match made in ‘sweet spot’ heaven.
The outdoor deck is spectacular, overlooking the vines of Lambloch Estate with views across to the mountains. It’s a unique space with a distinct style made apparent by the artwork of Tanya Loviz.
“Tanya’s mixed-media artworks adorn our walls and all our cider labels. They’re colourful and quirky and suit our brand. We’ve just started running Sip ‘n’ Sparkle events, where participants can explore their artistic side by learning and applying Tanya’s secret embellishing techniques, socialising with friends, and enjoying lunch and a tasting. They can even have their photo taken in a giant wine glass and become one of Tanya’s living artworks! It’s loads of fun.”
In terms of what the future holds for the valley’s only cider house, Jacki has a few ideas.
“We get asked about non-alcoholic cider all the time. It’s a real trend at the moment. More equipment is required to de-alcoholise after fermentation, but I’d love to create one. We’d also like to get a commercial kitchen on-site so that we can offer more food options to our patrons, and I’d like to explore night-time events as an option. We do private functions regularly, and I’m keen to grow that side of the business.”
The Pokolbin Cider House is a unique character-filled option for anyone visiting the Hunter Valley. The cute and quirky cubby house set amongst the vines is eminently Instagrammable, as is the stunning mountain backdrop from the fabulous deck or the Tanya Loviz artworks. And, of course, there is the thirst-quenching and delicious range of ciders to tempt your taste buds for something a little different. We dare you to decide which is your favourite!

From day one, the focus has been on creating an environment where everyone feels safe and supported, and now, one year later, it’s become a hub for the local community.
“Although we are still such a young health club, continuing to expand what we offer to members and giving back to the community have been super important to us.” says owner Rich Hermens.
“Over the last year, we’ve added a Pendulum Squat machine, heavier dumbbells, more functional equipment, extra Pilates and Functional classes, and more recently, new classes like Boxing. Plus, we’re
always looking for new ways to give back to and get involved with the community, whether that be through promoting local business for our members, getting involved with local sporting clubs, or simply taking the opportunity to show some gratitude with member giveaways and prizes,” added Rich.
“We also have some really exciting changes coming through, but you’ll just have to wait!”
The Hunter Region is an ever-growing and family-based community, and Huntlee Fitness promises to help people looking to make meaningful changes to their lifestyles. In addition to state-of-the-art equipment and classes led by motivating instructors, Huntlee Fitness boasts a broad range of fitness levels and experience among its member base. Their members range from people who have never been to a gym before to
seasoned gym-goers looking to try something new. The friendly staff and relaxed vibe have been a big hit, with members who appreciate the lack of intimidation and the space itself being bright and open with high ceilings and plenty of space. Whether your goals are focused more on weight and fat loss, building or maintaining muscle, or just moving a little more for longevity, the team at Huntlee Fitness has your back.
One of the gym's standout features is the professional personal trainers, always on hand to provide customised support. Staff are always ready with great advice to guide members through using the equipment most effectively, while monthly workout plans help structure routines
for optimal results. The whole team takes the time to understand your goals and create a program tailored specifically for you. But Huntlee Fitness isn't just about one-on-one training. The group fitness classes have become a community into themselves with a strong culture of encouragement and camaraderie.
“The response from the community has been better than we could have imagined,” said Rich.
“Not only have the community been really welcoming, but the care and support we see members give each other every day is really nice to watch.”
“We have seen friendships made, members helping one another on the gym floor every day, and so many people smash their fitness goals. We couldn't be prouder. It’s a testament to the team and to the incredible manager, Josh, who leads by example.”
For those seeking a more mindful workout experience, Huntlee Fitness offers Yoga and Pilates classes conducted by experienced instructors who focus on education, muscle strengthening, deep stretches, endurance-building, and core development. These sessions aim to leave participants feeling energised, centred, and at peace. The club also recognises that physical health isn't the whole picture. That's why they've set up a "Wellness Room" with two massage chairs, a hydromassage lounge, and an infrared sauna. It's the perfect spot to unwind after a tough workout and give your mind a break, too.
As Huntlee Fitness blows out the candles on its first birthday cake, it's clear this gym is more than just a place to exercise. It's a community hub where locals can come together, support each other, and prioritise their overall well-being in a no-frills way. Family Traditions and Boutique Delights at Tintilla Estate
In the heart of the Hunter Valley's wine country lies Tintilla Estate, a 25-hectare gem where family traditions and boutique delicacies converge. When it comes to boutique vineyards, family is often the lifeblood of the operation. From growing the grapes and making the wine to serving in the cellar door to managing the books, it’s usually all hands on deck at a family-owned and run winery.
Tintilla is no different, and for over 30 years, this picturesque vineyard, winery, and olive grove has been a labour of love for the Lusby family, producing award-winning wines and olive products.
Established in 1994 by Sydney-based vascular surgeon Robert Lusby, Tintilla Estate draws inspiration from the Old World, with its name paying homage to the ancient term for red wine used in 17th-century Bordeaux. The winery's cellar door exudes a warm, family-like ambience that keeps visitors returning.
At Tintilla, guests can savour the estate's distinctive, single-vineyard wines and olive products while taking in breathtaking views of rolling vineyards and olive groves. The tasting room invites visitors to sip from large Riedel glasses and indulge in cheese platters paired with Tintilla's own condiments, creating a truly unique experience.
Olives are an integral part of Tintilla's legacy, with over 500 trees planted across the estate. Varieties include Spanish Manzanillo and Sevillano, as well as Verdale, Jumbo Kalamata, and the nutty Tuscan Frantoio. The olives have been handpicked, debittered, fermented, and bottled with traditional herbs and spices, and are available exclusively at the cellar door.
Beyond olives, Tintilla offers a diverse range of seasonal produce, from luscious chilli tomato relish and fig jams to caramelised vinegars and vincotto, a grape must elixir infused with orange zest, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The estate's orchard contributes to the ever-changing selection of jams and relishes, celebrating the region's bountiful flavours.
While the wines remain the main attraction, Tintilla Estate embodies the perfect blend of food, wine, and family. The Lusbys have created a thoughtful, boutique experience that reflects the traditions of the old world while embracing the tastes and flexibility of the new.
Open daily from 10:30AM to 6PM, Tintilla Estate welcomes visitors to explore its exceptional wines, olive products, and seasonal delicacies. Tastings and group experiences are available by booking online or via email, offering a chance to savour the essence of this family-run, awardwinning hidden gem in the Hunter Valley. SADDLER'S CREEK WINES
A Passion for Horses, Wine, and Life's Pleasures
In 1990, two friends with a shared love for fine wine and a deep appreciation for horses established Saddler's Creek Wines. Over time, the winery gained a reputation for producing outstanding, full-bodied red wines, and the Bluegrass label emerged as a highly acclaimed iconic wine and Saddler's Creek's signature brand.
One such wine enthusiast, Frank Laureti, was introduced to the Bluegrass Cabernet Sauvignon through a friend and subsequently became a Saddler's CLUB EQUUS member for over a decade, revelling in the exceptional wines. When Saddler's Creek Wines came up for sale in 2014, Frank seized the opportunity in what he describes as a "Victor Kiam moment" and purchased the winery, lock, stock, and barrel!
Fueled by his infectious enthusiasm, Frank's wife Wendy and brother Serge joined him as partners in this new venture. As Frank candidly admits, "Buying into the wine business was a romantic notion, but you do some things for work and some things to live... friends, food, and wine are among life's great pleasures."
wines stand out from the vast majority of products available, inviting wine lovers to experience a truly exceptional tasting experience at their Pokolbin Cellar Door.
Visitors can indulge in seasonal tasting food and wine journeys, attend regular themed masterclasses to enhance their wine knowledge or savour the delicious seasonal menu curated to complement the wine flights from the on-site food van.
For a more relaxed experience, "Weekends at Saddler's" beckons guests to unwind in the wine garden on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, accompanied by local live acoustic music and delectable food pairings from local ‘celebrity’ Chef Matt Dillow.
Saddler's Creek Wines also offers a picturesque picnic ground with tables, BBQ facilities, and stunning views of the Brokenback Range. Book a picnic pod and let the Saddler's team curate a unique and special gathering, from intimate proposals to milestone birthday celebrations. JACK SQUAT Your Sober Sidekick!
WORDS DI VON ESSEN
If your New Year’s resolution was to reduce your alcohol intake in 2024— and that resolution is already well and truly out the window—don’t despair; Dry July and Sober Tober are just around the corner!
While we fervently applaud those who are able to quit drinking cold turkey, for those who prefer a more gradual transition or reduced, responsible drinking habits, the team at Tamburlaine Organic Wines has released a new alcohol-removed range that aims to make the transition smoother.
What is alcohol-removed wine?
Tamburlaine’s ‘Jack Squat” range is the exact wine from their organic vineyards used in regular alcoholic wines, with an additional process at the end of production to gently remove the alcohol after the wine is fermented. This ensures you get all the goodness of organic Tamburlaine wine with only trace amounts of alcohol (about as little as a lemon-lime and bitters). Designated drivers rejoice!
“We’re going to be perfectly transparent here - these beverages do not taste exactly the same as their alcoholic counterparts due to alcohol’s inherent role as a flavour component,” says Chief Winemaker Mark Davidson.
“However, if you delight in the tannins, juiciness and/or tartness of lovingly fermented grape varietals, you’ll certainly find something to like within our Jack Squat series.”
If you’re curious about the range and don’t know where to start, visit the Cellar Door at 358 McDonalds Rd, Pokolbin and ask to try it before you buy it. If you’re too far away to visit, jump online and check out two of our faves.
Lifted white flowers and citrus notes. Fresh and balanced acidity levels frame pear and crisp apple flavours.

FALL for Fantastic Flavours this Autumn!
WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN
Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons in Hunter Valley. As the summer heat subsides, the region’s vineyards undergo a magical transformation as the leaves turn vibrant red, orange, and yellow, and the cooler temperatures make it an ideal time to explore the region.
As the leaves fall and cooler temperatures set in, autumn also becomes a welcome relief for many of us, offering a refreshing break from the summer's swelter and prompting a shift in our wine and culinary cravings.
Here are a few wine picks to stock your fridge and cellar this season.
Don't let the cooler temperatures deter you from enjoying a glass of your favourite Rosé. This versatile wine, a true champion of all seasons, pairs beautifully with a wide variety of foods and flavours. Its ability to handle spices and heat makes it an ideal companion for Middle Eastern, Mexican, Thai and Greek dishes.
Those lighter-style reds you have been enjoying in the warmer weather remain an optimal choice for the cooler moments of autumn; however, now is the time to enjoy Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sangiovese, Grenache, Cabernet blends and medium-bodied Shiraz at room temperature.
Similarly, medium-bodied white wines are seasonally perfect, particularly with comfort foods like roast chicken and creamy pasta. From an elegant Chardonnay to a rich and textural Pinot Gris or a zesty Semillon, these white styles pair well with all sorts of autumn fare.
A wine renowned for delivering the fantastic flavours of autumn, Pinot Noir has become very popular in Australia as an alternative to some of the bigger and bolder reds. As a light to medium-bodied wine with an aromatic nose and hints of cherry and raspberry flavours balanced by smooth tannins, Pinot Noir is a particularly flavoursome wine ideal with roasted meats, salmon, and tuna dishes.
Another seasonal favourite, medium-bodied but deceptively light in colour, Grenache is a varietal packed with raspberry and red plum aromas. This crowd-pleasing wine is excellent alongside cooler weather dishes such as grilled or braised beef, veal, pork and chicken.
The typical young Hunter Valley Shiraz is an elegant, medium-bodied wine showing red and dark berries, spices and a great deal of tannin. The wines become far more complex and full-bodied with age, yet smooth and richly flavoured with some earthy tones. These wines are excellent paired with grilled or roasted red meats.
Sangiovese is perfect for autumn sipping. Not only does it offer you flavour satisfaction, but it is the ideal match for the creamier and richer meals that you crave once the cool weather moves in. Like all Italian wines, Sangiovese is well-matched for the flavours of chicken, grilled red meat, lamb, slow-roasted pork, pasta, stews, or well-aged cheeses.
When it comes to the whites, most Chardonnay lovers will drink Chardonnay regardless of the season, but it is the perfect choice for autumn. The style that has emerged today is all about letting the fruit take centre stage, with other elements, such as oak, taking a supportive role. A medium-bodied style is a perfect match for autumn’s classic characteristics. Enjoy with pies, buttery sauces, shellfish, risotto, pasta or chicken dishes such as butter chicken curry.
Viognier is another compelling white, with flavours that can include tangerine, peach, mango, honeysuckle and even roses. Enjoy a glass of Viognier with exotic dishes such as orange chicken, turkey with cranberry chutney, or any curry with a citrus garnish.
Regionally unique, Hunter Valley Semillon is proof that autumn is not just about red wines. This Bordeaux-borne grape is often blended with Sauvignon Blanc, giving an otherwise lush, mouth-filling wine a welcome zippiness to make an excellent choice for those autumn-inspired dishes.
Pinot Gris is another excellent choice for this time of year. It is rich and textural, with notes of apple and pear (how fitting for autumn!) and just the right amount of spice from some time in oak. This wine is great for transitioning from dry, crisp whites to something more complex and superb with a chicken pie or pork tenderloin.
Sparkling Wines can be enjoyed at any time of year – not just for celebrations but as a fine friend for autumn-centric starters, including
