Pokolbin Cider House blends winemaking techniques with cider production, crafting a boutique drinking experience that provides a unique alternative to traditional wine tasting in the Hunter Valley. The range changes each year depending on what fruit is available, with most of the fruit coming from Orange. Sip, Savour, and Swoon: Hart & Hunter’s Long Table White Lunch

When it comes to boutique family-owned wine label Hart & Hunter, less is definitely more… Smaller batches of grapes from the best vineyards in the Hunter Valley. Less intervention in the winemaking process. Greater flexibility to try something different.

For those of you who are already fans, we’re probably preaching to the converted. But for those yet to pay a visit to the Hart & Hunter cellar door, the 3rd Long Table White Lunch might just be exactly the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Jodie Belleville (who co-owns the winery with her husband Damien) says the cellar door’s beautiful outdoor space inspired the concept, and the first event was launched to welcome in the Spring of 2022.

“We hope to build this into a significant local event for not only our members but for visiting guests who love the Hunter Valley and enjoy a unique dining experience,” said Jodie.

The luncheon is an indulgent affair of five courses paired beautifully with a decadent selection of Hart & Hunter Wines.

“Jonathan from Well Seasoned Catering and his team will be cooking for us on the day. This is the second year they will be looking after our guests,” said Jodie.

“His approach to food and ingredients is all about respecting the produce and allowing it to speak for itself. He enjoys cooking honest, humble dishes, and his love for Asian food has influenced his menus for many years. We are really excited to welcome his team back.

“We start the day with Champagne and canapés, then once seated, progress through a curated list of wines, including Magnums and vintage releases of our favourite wines. This being our 15th year of Hart & Hunter, we will showcase some amazing vintages like the 2014 Ablington in a double Magnum and a pHat Shiraz blend#1 in a Magnum.

“Attendees will also be the first to taste our premium ICON Chardonnay, as the long table is the official release day of this wine.”

The 3rd Long Table White Lunch will be held on Saturday, 14 September, from 12.30pm at the Hart & Hunter Cellar Door (463 Deaseys Rd Pokolbin). This is an outdoor dining experience, and tickets can be purchased directly from the website at www.hartandhunter.com.au/events.

Where Art Meets Nature Wollombi Valley Sculpture Festival

WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER IMAGES SOURCE WOLLOMBI VALLEY SCULPTURE FESTIVAL

The Wollombi Valley Sculpture Festival, presented by Sculpture in the Vineyards, takes over Wollombi and surrounds for 16 days, including three weekends from 14 to 29 September in what is Australia’s longest-running regional outdoor sculpture exhibition. The festival features over 150 works by award-winning and international sculptors vying for over $40K in prize money and unique opportunities. And the best bit? It’s completely free to attend!

Sculpture in the Vineyards began in 2002, initially in Mount View, before Phillippa Heslop of Stonehurst Cedar Creek Vineyard in Wollombi took over, recognising its potential to bring visitors to Wollombi. The festival expanded to include other vineyards, with the offering evolving over time. In 2019, Susan Leith-Miller was appointed as Festival Director with a mandate to inject new energy and life into the festival.

Leith-Miller retired to Wollombi after living in Sydney as a marketing specialist with experience in tourism, hospitality, leisure, publishing, and market research. She’d recently turned 60 and, with her film and TV editor husband, was keen to find somewhere in the country to relax their punishing pace.

“Wollombi was it,” said Susan.

“We love the history of the village, and there’s an amazing community of people here. It’s a haven for artists, not far from Sydney; it’s culturally rich with an in-demand gallery and the people get involved. Everyone volunteers for things; it’s a strong community.

“I was initially invited to attend a couple of committee meetings for Sculpture in the Vineyards. It wasn’t long before I was offered the role of Director in a volunteer capacity. My background in marketing enabled me to articulate a vision for the festival going forward, and it was clear to me that the festival needed a new name: The Wollombi Valley Sculpture Festival. It is now a festival for the whole of the valley, with sculptures throughout the valley, in galleries, and, of course, in the vineyards. This

'Inland Sea' by Paul Selwood

created a shift of perception for the public. It was no longer a business promotion but a true festival that showcases the entire community and brings some of the best sculptors in the industry to the area.”

The first thing Susan did when she became Director was to cold call ten well-known sculptors and to focus on prizes that money can’t buy for the artists.

“The festival showcases sculptors from across Australia and the world. It has many, many Sculpture by the Sea winners and finalists. And they keep coming back. If you love sculpture and being in beautiful rural settings, you must see this festival. We will have 78 outdoor sculpturesthat will be placed in Laguna, the Wollombi Village, Undercliff Winery and Stonehurst Cedar Creek. All beautiful settings for the sculptures.

“Along with the 78 outdoor sculptures, we will have 104 indoor sculptures displayed in 6 indoor galleries - Laguna, Wollombi Village and Stonehurst Cedar Creek. Most of our galleries are converted spacessome are large spaces - community halls, wine cellar storage and this year, for the first time, St John’s Church - which will be emptied of pews and turned into a magic space fit for a beautiful gallery - the sculptures are going to look stunning. We also have the historic Dance Hall that will display sculptures from some of Australia’s most renowned sculptors, and the whole visitor experience will be a delight.”

In 2020, the Governor of NSW visited the festival and became a patron, stating in the 2022 catalogue address:

“As we walked through outdoor sculpture sites, including the two wineries at Undercliff and Stonehurst and the indoor galleries in the historic village of Wollombi, the range and quality of the works reinforced for us that this festival is one of the premier sculpture festivals in the country.

“In 2020, as we viewed the works, it was as though every piece had been specifically sculpted for its curated exhibition space. Yet, as we know, after the festival, that very same piece will take on a different life in a different place. Truly, the wonderment of Art! This year will be no different, with sculptures, large, small, serious and whimsical, all nestling in and about the beautiful Wollombi Valley.”

Susan approached the Governor of NSW to offer Australia’s first Governor’s Prize, the winner of which has their sculpture installed at Government House for twelve months. It’s become a highly prestigious prize to win.

The prize pool includes the $25K Open Prize, the Highly Commended Prize worth $10K, the Small Sculpture Prize for $5K and a Young Sculptor Prize worth $250. Other ‘money-can’t-buy’ prizes include the Hampstead School of Art Gallery Prize, which provides a UK solo exhibition opportunity and a $5K allowance, an Artist in Residence at The Foundations Portland Prize, providing a creative residency and $1K allowance and the Kangaroo Valley Invited Artist Award which invites the winner to exhibit at Sculpture in the Valley 2025 and provides a $500 allowance.

The judges for 2024 are Rhonda Davis and Terence Maloon. Rhonda is a senior curator at the Macquarie University Art Gallery, has curated numerous exhibitions, and has judged many art prizes. Terence Maloon is an esteemed art scholar and museum curator responsible for international exhibitions, including Picasso, Matisse, Monet, and Pissarro and was an invited judge on the panel for Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi Respected British sculptor Isabel H Langtry will be a Distinguished Guest Sculptor at the 2024 festival and has provided the Hampstead School of Art Prize. As Principal of Hampstead School of Art in London, Isabel aims to instil a love of sculpture and inspire collecting and the love of art. As a sculptor, Isabel produces large-scale works for public places, the objective of which is to bring communities together to create new heritage and communal memories. She has exhibited a series of works F

on Hampstead Heath and has works permanently installed throughout the globe, including in Beijing, London, Mallorca, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Slovenia and Galicia.

“Isabel Langtry’s visit will allow local sculptors and festival goers to develop their understanding of international perspectives on outdoor sculpture and the role of public art in various contexts,” said Susan.

“Her engaging style and presence will add to what is already a vibrant, dynamic and community-focused event.”

The community of Wollombi supports the festival with over one hundred volunteers keeping the galleries open and helping to install, curate, and run the two-hour Village Walk and Talk Tours. The tours are the only component of the festival that attracts a small fee - $15

per adult and $12 concession (children are free). Even the full-colour catalogue is free of charge.

ABC radio presenter Simon Marnie has been a supportive presence at the festival for the past three years and will return as MC again this year for the festival opening and prize-giving ceremonies. He will also broadcast his Weekend Morning Radio Show on ABC 702 from Wollombi Village on 15 September from 10am until 12 noon.

“We expect around 4,000 people to attend the festival this year,” said Susan.

“We’ve got the cream of the sculpting world right here in Wollombi with extraordinary artworks completely free to view and even available to buy! The sculptures are for sale and range in pricing from $2K at the low end to over $120K at the higher end, with many sitting in the $10K to $25K range.

“We also invite members of the public to become donors, with all money going directly to the running of the festival. Donations are 100% tax deductible, and donors are invited to attend a special preview event. I’m confident that the festival will continue to exceed all expectations in terms of quality and visitor experience.”

Stonehurst Cedar Creek Winery is hosting a long table lunch set amongst sculptures and pear trees at Stonehurst Cedar Creek from 12pm on Saturday, 21 September, with an optional guided walk and artist talk scheduled for 11.30am prior to the luncheon. The five-course gourmet feast will feature local and regional produce with ten matching awardwinning Stonehurst wines and live music for $150 per adult, with children and families welcome.

There is a school’s program with excursions encouraged for all ages to inspire the next generation of sculptors. Options include various guided tours and even a hands-on creative workshop.

Wollombi is less than two hours from the centre of Sydney and just over an hour from Newcastle and the Central Coast. Visitors will be able to picnic amongst the sculptures, enjoy the local vineyards, restaurants, cafes and taverns, visit the six indoor galleries and have the opportunity to buy beautiful sculptures.

At the Australian Wine industry’s night-of-nights this month, the Silkman family became winemaking royalty as Chief Winemaker Liz Silkman was named 2025 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, the first Hunter Valley winemaker to ever be bestowed with this title.

Greg and Jenny Silkman established First Creek in 1998 with a vision to create one of the Hunter Valley’s leading family-owned wine businesses. As the years went on and the family evolved their son Shaun armed with a Business and a Winemaking degree, joined the business to head up operations. When he married the then-emerging winemaker, Liz, she joined the family business as Chief Winemaker, taking the wines from strength to strength, and their reputation and accolades followed. Today, First Creek is one of the most awarded New South Wales wine brands, consistently recognised as a 5-Star Winemaker by Halliday every year since 2010.

In 2013, Shaun and Liz started what they affectionately call their ‘side hustle’, establishing their own wine brand, Silkman Wines, while maintaining their day jobs in the family business at First Creek and raising a young family. Silkman has become their place for creativity and the freedom to make wines and styles that they wanted to experiment with. Silkman was also Shortlisted for Best Winery by Halliday in 2025, and Liz was bestowed with arguably the most prestigious winemaking title in the country – Halliday Winemaker of the Year 2025 as well as taking the title of Semillon of the Year for her Silkman Blackberry Semillon 2023 amassing an “exceptional” 98-point score.

“We’re thrilled for Liz and that her efforts have earned her this title. She’s certainly a deserving recipient,” said Greg Silkman, Managing Director of First Creek Wines.

“Anyone that knows me will attest to the fact that I’m not one for the limelight, so I’m still in shock at being named Halliday Winemaker of the Year,” said Liz.

“While I’m humbled by the recognition, it really is a team effort at First Creek. It’s incredibly rewarding to see that 27 wines reviewed by Halliday this year scored 95 points or more. Twelve from First Creek and 15 from Silkman, and to have three wines score their ‘exceptional’ 98 points is really exciting.”

Culinary Hotspot Blends South–American Fire with Mediterranean Flair

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

IMAGES MEGANN EVANS PHOTOGRAPHY

Tucked away in the hidden gem that is the Mount View area of the Hunter Valley and located in the award-winning boutique winery of Briar Ridge is an exciting new restaurant that blends the best of Brazil with Mediterranean and Northern Italian influences – the Estancia Osteria

Gabriel Rodrigues and James Orlowski opened Estancia Osteria in April of this year. They had worked together as Group Executive Chefs in Sydney before seeking a venue big enough to incorporate a smokehouse and outdoor barbeques, critical components of their innovative live-fire cooking techniques. They found the space at Briar Ridge at the formerly named Osteria.

“It was James who found the venue,” said Gabriel.

“I was in Italy studying osterias (traditional Italian eateries), and here he was at a venue previously known as Osteria. We didn’t think twice. We restyled and built all the tables and chairs ourselves out of old secondhand rustic timbers.”

Born in Brazil, Rodriques spent ten years working in French cuisine with Michelin-starred chefs and has experience across three continents.

In contrast, Orlowski grew up on a New Zealand cattle farm, which taught him the importance of the provenance of produce. The pair are supported in the kitchen by their small and well trained team, who bring passion and drive to exceed guest expectations on every front.

Together, the team have created a menu that is centred on cooking over fire, which enhances flavours. Meats take two to three days to prepare, and each dish is crafted using locally sourced ingredients.

The menu changes frequently but includes a selection of pasta dishes such as pappardelle with smoked brisket ragout, meat dishes such as the Iron Bark smoked lamb shoulder and desserts such as Tiramisu with orange mascarpone. Every Thursday, a locals pasta night includes three courses for $39. The highlight of the week is Smoky Sundays, which feature the barbeque style of different countries cooked on open fire.

Wash all this delicious food down with a glass or two of Briar Ridge wines, and your day becomes perfect. Estancia Osteria is located at Briar Ridge Vineyard, Mount View and is open Wednesday to Sunday, serving dinner Thursday to Saturday and breakfast Saturday and Sunday.

Craft Beer Haven a Gateway to Wine Country

The Valley Brewhouse, formerly known as Potter’s Hotel, with the familiar landmark of heritage-listed brickwork kilns out the front of the property, is located at the gateway to wine country in Nulkaba and offers award-winning craft beers, delicious food, and live entertainment, with a family-friendly, home-away-from-home vibe.

Owned and operated by Campbell Rogers and business partner Josh Gamgee of Rogers Hotels, the pair purchased the business in March of this year, and are keen to connect with the local community as much as with the tourism trade. Rogers Hotels also owns and operates several venues across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, including the Sunnyside Tavern, the Mayfield Hotel, the Colliery Inn, the Central Hotel in Stroud and the Holmesville Hotel.

“It’s all about creating an environment that people enjoy and want to spend time in,” said Campbell.

“It has to be fun, safe, and serve delicious food. All our venues are a little different and a bit quirky in their own way. The Valley Brewhouse

is obviously a craft beer brewery, and it’s our first time working in this space. It’s a lot of fun.”

When it comes to the crafting of beer, The Valley Brewhouse is in excellent hands, with brewers Keith Grice and Daniel Gayner at the helm. Grice is considered one of the founders of craft beer in Hunter Valley wine country, and he’s been brewing at this brewery and winning awards since 2007. Visitors to the Valley Brewhouse can take brewery tours and guided tastings, which are widely considered to be the best in the business and a must for any beer-loving visitor to the Hunter.

Set on five acres with a massive lawn featuring twenty picnic tables and a very large, brand-new kids’ playground, the bistro serves premium pub-style food and, on weekends the Smoke House Kitchen, located outdoors in the Beer Garden, serves up melt-in-the-mouth smoked meats.

With ten craft beers on tap and a changing menu of creative brews developed by the onsite team, as well as regular live music and plenty of space to relax and enjoy yourself, The Valley Brewhouse is worth repeated visits! Open seven days until late, you’ll find it on Wine Country Drive at Nulkaba.

RUSTY JACKS

Fireside Café

Brings Outdoors In

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

If you’re hankering after the great outdoors with some time around the fire pit, the kids running free, sipping the perfect coffee and munching on a delicious smoked brisket pie, there’s no need to go camping – just pop into Rusty Jacks on Wine Country Drive at Rothbury for a unique café experience like no other.

Serving freshly baked pies and expertly brewed coffee, this countrystyle café is open seven days a week from 6am to 2pm on weekdays and 7am to 3pm on weekends. It’s simple, wholesome and popular with tourists and locals who gather around the fire pit, which is lit from 6am to 11am every day.

Owner Corrie Van Graan was born in South Africa but has lived in Australia for 25 years, running several businesses, including nine cafes in Sydney, before moving to the Hunter Valley two years ago to contemplate semi-retirement from his home on Wine Country Drive. Corrie could see the opportunity that his well-situated property afforded him in terms of attracting business and believes that Rusty Jacks is the first of its kind.

“The fire pit makes it unique, and we get all sorts here – tourists on the weekends and locals during the week,” said Corrie.

“People sit around the fire pit to have a natter and make friends. They bring their dogs and their kids; they kick a ball around – it’s got a real family-friendly outdoors ambience to it.”

The menu features high-quality, freshly brewed coffee made from imported beans with no-nonsense names such as ‘frothy coffee’ for cappuccinos, ‘choccy coffee’ for mochas, and ‘not coffee’ for tea!

The pies have been sourced locally from Full Throttle Smoky Brisket Pies, and every pie is a smoky brisket pie with choices including smoky brisket with cheese, with curry, with cheese and Jalapeño and with gravy. There are also smoky brisket sausage rolls.

“I believe in supporting local businesses and providing the highest quality produce,” said Corrie.

“I eat two of our pies every single day, and they’re the best you can get.”

Look out for the Rusty Jacks signpost and the old rusty ute in the paddock at 1470 Wine Country Drive Rothbury, or visit www.rustyjacks.com.

Fine Dining Meets Casual Charm at The Deck Café

Situated on the deck over the picturesque dam in young forest bushland at Gartelmann Wines, The Deck Café Lovedale is an experience to remember with the Hunter's "celebrity" Chef Matt Dillow and his dedicated team creating café favourites with a Hunter Valley fine-dining twist.

The Deck Café is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch and one Sunday night each month for the highly coveted locals nights (and no, you don’t have to be a local!)

You can also book private functions, and off-site catering. But if that’s not enough, join Matt on his Food, Wine and Produce Tours, with destinations like Tasmania, Margaret River, South Australia and Italy; it’s an experience to remember.

It's the perfect place to start the day, have a break from a morning of wine tasting or chill out with family and friends. Think breakfasts like scones with Chantilly cream, house-made jam and fresh strawberries or Belgian waffles with your choice of delicious toppings. Or maybe a hangover roll is in order? If not, try eggs benedict with herb-roasted field mushrooms or the Power Plate to get your day going. There’s also one of Matt’s favourites, Crab Omelette, which is blue swimmer crab with zucchini, chives, bisque, salmon caviar and grilled sourdough.

The lunch menu is just as delicious, with a tapas menu that includes Slipper Lobster with chorizo, herb gnocchi, and smoked cherry tomatoes, Spanish Iberico Jamon with pecorino, panko crusted egg and truffle oil or Tempura Zucchini Flower filled with roasted pumpkin and fetta, sun-dried tapenade (to name a few!)

A few steps away, you’ll discover Gartelmann Wines Cellar Door specialising in fine, hand-crafted wines using grapes sourced from premium growing regions in the Lower and Upper Hunter, as well as Central Ranges, Clare Valley, Orange, Renmark, Rutherglen and Rylstone. Gartelmann Wines has earned a reputation for producing high-quality, award-winning wines, providing various styles ranging from classic Hunter Valley Semillon, Verdelho and Shiraz to alternative varietals such as Barbera, Petit Verdot, Picpoul and something for the sweet lovers.

Experience the hospitality the Hunter is famous for, savouring fine wines and delectable dining seven days a week at 701 Lovedale Rd, Lovedale. Oh – and did we mention the farm animals for the kids?

Reds of the Hunter Valley

Throughout the world, the goal of winemakers is to make the best possible wine, and in Australia, for many wine enthusiasts, the quest for that 'perfect' Australian red wine starts in the Hunter Valley. Here, for almost 200 years, winemakers have developed a reputation for producing remarkable wines, showcasing a harmonious blend of tradition and a spirit of innovation.

There is no mistaking the quality and variety of red wine on offer in the Hunter Valley, where the region's terroir - a combination of climate, soil, and topography, plays a pivotal role in shaping the distinct characteristics of its red wines. Here, the warm climate and deep friable loam and red duplex soils of the Hunter Valley produce superb examples of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, as well as an increasing number of Mediterranean varieties that include Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Barbera and Nebbiolo, to mention just a few.

Throughout the world, winemakers strive to make the best possible wine from the resources available to them, and for many wine aficionados, the quest for the "perfect" Aussie red starts right here in Hunter Valley wine country.

Shiraz is the Hunter's premium red variety and is tremendously flexible in its ability to adapt to almost any combination of climate and soil. The typical young Hunter Valley Shiraz is a medium-bodied wine showing red and dark berries and spices. The region's humid climate and frequent summer rainfall contribute to wines with softer tannins and lower alcohol content compared to their South Australian counterparts.F

Hunter Valley Shiraz is known for its ability to age gracefully, developing complex leather and tobacco notes over time, making it a favourite among collectors and wine enthusiasts.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the world's most loved red wine, renowned for its ability to age for decades. As a result, this classic red variety of Bordeaux is second only to Shiraz in importance in Australia. Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be medium to full-bodied, elegant and aromatic, with a rich bouquet of fruity notes of black cherries and currants and herby notes of peppers and olives.

Described as "the most romantic of wines'' due to its sensual and gratifying perfume, Pinot Noir tends to be light to medium in body with a broad range of textures and flavours, including a variety of complex aromas reminiscent of black or red cherry, raspberry, currant, and blackberry. While widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, it is also highly reflective of its terroir, with different winegrowing regions often producing very different wines.

In Australia, Merlot is one of the most important red grape varieties - coming in third after Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Originating from Bordeaux in France, Merlot is renowned for its wonderfully fruity, well-rounded, even fleshy character and is grown in just about every wine-growing region of Australia. The summer heat of the Hunter is considered to provide the ideal growing conditions for this versatile grape variety. Hunter Valley Merlot has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, with a vibrant bouquet providing one of the most pleasurable wine experiences.

Originally from Spain, Grenache is one of the world’s most widely planted grapes. In Australia, it is well known as part of a blended trio with Shiraz and Mourvèdre – the so-called GSM blend, which can be found in numerous Hunter Valley tasting rooms. Grenache is now increasingly popular as a superb single varietal medium to full-bodied wine, with red fruit flavours that are layered with a peppery spice. Its balanced tannins and acidity make it easy to drink, although it does tend to have higher alcohol levels.

Tempranillo is a premium grape variety originating in the Rioja region of Spain, where it is often blended with varieties such as Grenache and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon. This variety is exciting because it is an easy-drinking, medium to full-bodied wine with lower acidity and full fruit flavours that go well with a wide range of foods. The wine is ruby red, while the aroma and flavours can have plum, cherry, strawberry, and herb characteristics.

Also Mediterranean in its ancestry is Nebbiolo. A prestigious grape variety hailing from the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, Nebbiolo forms the basis for renowned wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco. This variety is prized for producing complex, full-bodied wines with high acidity and strong tannins, often requiring significant aging to reach their full potential. Nebbiolo wines are typically pale brick-red in colour, belying their robust nature. The aroma and flavour profile is distinguished by notes of red fruits like cherry and raspberry, along with more complex hints of rose, tar, and truffle, making it a favourite among wine connoisseurs and an excellent pairing for rich, savoury dishes.

Originally from the Bordeaux region of France, the bold-yet-floral expression of Petit Verdot is something that all red wine enthusiasts should have the opportunity to try. In Australia, Petit Verdot is planted in warmer climates like the Hunter Valley, producing full-bodied wines with concentrated flavours and integrated tannins.

Whatever you're looking for, the Hunter Valley provides a diversity of red wines that are perfect for those looking for something different. Enjoy wine, enjoy friends, and most importantly, enjoy yourself.
