With a snow machine working overtime to pump out finer, more realistic snow in greater amounts than ever, who needs an expensive trip to the snowfields when we’ve got heaps of the real thing right here in the Hunter Valley?
A perfect destination to celebrate Christmas in July with a snowy theme and frosty fun, Snow Time entry includes Ice Skating, Ice Toboggan, Snow Play Zone and a Snow Cave. And did we mention the bit where Mum and Dad can slot in a spot of fireside wine tasting while you’re here? It sounds like a definite win-win to us! Read more on page 12.
Established in 1996 by Stewart Ewen, Kelman Vineyard is named in honour of William Kelman, who travelled to Australia in 1824. A true ‘living vineyard,’ what is unique about Kelman’s vineyard and the wines it produces is how seamlessly it has been integrated into the broader community, a testament to the rich local culture that also calls the estate home.
The vines are purposely planted to meander between the estate’s privately owned properties, creating a unique
landscape that can no longer be replicated anywhere else in Australia. Read more on page 24.
A stellar line-up of wineries, brewers and entertainers is confirmed for this year’s Hunter Valley Wine & Beer Festival – the winter festival that showcases over 50 of the Valley’s best wineries, distillers, and brewers. Tasty treats, including paella, curry, Italian, and an enticing array of tempting artisan foods from local providers, will also be on the menu. Prepare your taste buds for a journey through the Hunter Valley's finest wines on page 16.
Catering to an increasing array of dietary requirements seems the norm on any good menu these days. This is especially true at Blanchies, where Chef and owner Matthew Blanch was inspired by family and friends living with the challenges of coeliac disease to specialise in gluten-free. The restaurant has become home to the best GF pancakes in the Hunter Valley! Read more on page 20.
With Winter Warmers top of mind – in this issue (and indeed throughout winter), we highlight some of the best spots to enjoy a soul-warming dining experience designed to turn up the heat on your time in Wine Country in our seasonal winter dining guide on page 28.

Snow Time in the Garden Winter Wonderland Arrives in
Wine Country!
READ ONLINE
WORDS LIANE MORRIS
Did you know there is guaranteed snow in the Hunter Valley every year, no matter how warm the weather? The Hunter Valley Gardens' coolest annual event - Snow Time in the Garden, returns this June and July with a whole month of wintery fun, including ice skating, ice tobogganing and a huge snow play zone from 29 June to 28 July
One of the Hunter Valley Garden’s signature events, Snow Time, has been running since 2011, and for many families, it has become an annual tradition. Taking your young ones on their first experience of snow to the ski fields of New South Wales has become impossibly expensive. Add to this the increasing cost of living crisis and families everywhere are looking for affordable alternatives. At Hunter Valley Gardens, the wintry magic of ice activities, the delight of man-made snow and the family fun for young and old is right here; whether you’re a local or visiting the wine region, it’s a winter event not to be missed.
The Hunter Valley Gardens snowmaking machines are among the best available and will be pumping out fine, realistic snow in huge amounts – you won’t be able to tell the difference! Set within the 14 hectares of stunning gardens and with all the amenities the gardens are so well known for. It’s a day out for every age and all the family.
Hunter Valley Gardens will transform into a magical ice adventure playground full of fun and frosty adventures for children of all ages. A perfect destination to celebrate Christmas in July with a snowy theme and frosty fun, Snow Time entry includes Ice Skating, Ice Toboggan, Snow Play Zone and a Snow Cave.
Pick up your free skating session passes and take a spin on the Snow Time Ice Skating Rink. There’s also a Junior Ice Rink, which is a dedicated junior section that provides the smallest members of the family with a safe environment in which to enjoy their first taste of the ice. Skaters aged six and over have their own section with lots of room to glide around. Made with real ice, the rink can hold more than 200 skaters at a time and opens
yhv 12 | JUNE–JULY 2024
at 10am each day. To avoid disappointment, book your skating session (which lasts for 20 minutes) early at the Ice-Skating Ticket Booth. Bookings can only be made on the day at the ticket booth. Bobby Seals (skating aids) are also available for hire for children six years and under. An adult must accompany all children under the age of five years on the ice.
Perhaps the super-fast and crazy fun Giant Ice Toboggan is more your style. Grab a tube and glide down the 45-metre ice slide; it’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping, but be warned – once won’t be enough! This is a firm family favourite that will have everyone gasping with excitement and laughter all at once. Children under four must be accompanied by an adult.
The Mega Snow Play Zone is filled with freshly pumped snow every day to ensure you get the most authentic snow experience possible. Build a snowman (or snow person!), create a snow angel, and maybe throw a sneaky snowball – just don’t forget your gloves or your fingers may get a little chilly. Perfect memory-making moments for all the family.
This year, there’s a special Chill Zone in the Igloo Marquee where everyone can enjoy a range of very cool winter-themed craft activities, ideal for kids who love to get creative.
It's recommended that visitors wear weatherproof and waterproof clothing, including gloves, jackets, pants, and shoes, especially for smaller children who will be sitting in the Snow Play Zone. It's also advisable to bring along an extra set of clothing and a towel.
To increase the enjoyment of your day in the snow, there’s a range of roaming entertainment on offer, including The Pretty Amazing Jono on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June, Sunday 7 July, Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 July, and Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 July.
Little Scallywagz will be roaming on Saturday 6 July, Monday 15 July to Wednesday 17 July, Saturday 27 July and Sunday 28 July and Bravissimo from Monday 8 July to Wednesday 10 July. All roaming entertainment takes place between 10am and 1pm. Little Scallywagz is also running a special craft daily workshop from Saturday 6 July, to Sunday 21 July, from 10am to 2pm.
As if this incredible amount of fun is not enough, the popular Hunter Valley Gardens
amusement rides will also be open. It’s difficult to choose between the traditional Venetian Carousel or the 25m Ferris wheel with spectacular views across the gardens. Thrill seekers will enjoy the super speedy Swing Chair, the fast-paced Superslide and even the twisty Teacups. The ride ticket pricing is $6 per ticket, or grab a bonus pack of 6 for $30 – chances are you’ll need it.
Once you’ve worked up your appetite in this wintry wonderland, there’s plenty of hearty winter food and beverages available to keep you warm and toasty. A variety of food vendors ensure there’s something for every taste and include loaded fries, burgers, and kids meals – cheeseburgers, nuggets and chips, fish and chips, ice creams, woodfire pizza, Greek souvlaki plates, meat skewers, nachos, burrito bowls, chicken wings, pluto pups, crepes, gelato, hot cinnamon doughnuts, churros, fairy floss, slushies, loaded spuds, nourish bowls, grab & go salads, sausage sandwiches, toasted sandwiches, hot dogs, corn on the cob, dumplings, ham and cheese croissants, waffle on a stick with ice cream, assorted soft drinks, juice and water and a coffee van with assorted pastries.
There’s always the option to visit one of the well-established dining establishments in the nearby village, such as Ronnie's Pokolbin, Taste of the Country, éléments or The Garden Terrace Café. If pub fare is more your style, pop over to Harrigan's Bistro. Same-day re-entry to Snow Time is allowed, so keep your tickets to show on re-entry.
Hunter Valley Gardens is approximately two hours from Sydney and less than an hour from Newcastle, so even though the Hunter Valley is an easy day trip, there are also plenty of accommodation options available if you want to extend your stay to fully appreciate everything that the Hunter Valley Gardens and the surrounding wine region has to offer. There are special Snow Time packages with the Mercure Hunter Valley Gardens and Harrigan’s Hunter Valley, both within walking distance of the Snow Time fun.
The Mercure package includes one night's accommodation in a Studio Room, breakfast, family entry tickets (two adults and two children) into Hunter Valley Gardens Snow Time at the Garden, and six ride tickets per person. It costs $369 per room per night midweek or $469 per room per night on Friday or Saturday. Pricing is for two adults and two children.
Harrigan’s accommodation packages include one-night accommodation at Harrigan’s Hunter Valley, breakfast, family entry tickets (two adults & one child) into Hunter Valley Gardens Snow Time at the Garden, six ride tokens per person and costs $309 per room per

night midweek and $409 per room per night Friday or Saturday for two adults and one child. There is a two-night minimum stay for Saturdays, and the offer is only available on Snow Time dates. Charges for children over 12 years are an extra $20, and for additional children aged three to 12, $60 per person or for additional children over 12, $80 per person.
Snow Time activities operate between 9.30am and 4.30pm, and the last entry is at 3pm. Rides operate from 10am to 4:30pm, and the last ride is at 4:15pm.
In addition to Snow Time, don’t forget there are also 14 hectares of gardens with ten individually themed gardens to explore, and adjacent to the Gardens is Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village full of bespoke shops offering everything from collectables, jewellery, glassware, clothing, deli and gourmet foods to crystals and Christmas decorations. There really is something for every member of the family or group. It’s a fun day out with all the benefits and enjoyable moments that a trip to the snowfields would bring without the expense and travel time. The next time the kids are complaining they’re bored, take them to Snow Time in the Garden – it’s a fun-filled frosty adventure they won’t be able to resist and could just be the start of a new family tradition, just like the Christmas Lights Spectacular is for so many Hunter families.

Taste the History at BEN EAN
Ben Ean's history goes back more than 140 years to when John McDonald gave the estate its Scottish name, meaning ‘mountain of pleasure’. The estate was sold in 1917 to the Lindeman Family, who renamed it Lindemans Ben Ean and produced fortified wines until the 1980s when the market shifted towards table wines.
The brand underwent various ownership changes, acquired by Philip Morris in 1972 (Lindeman's Ben Ean Moselle was Australia's best-selling wine in the 1970s), Penfolds in 1990, Southcorp, and eventually Treasury Wine Estates in 2011. During its guardianship Southcorp renovated the old distillery site for the 2000 Sydney Olympics when Lindemans was the official wine provider, but Treasury later closed the Hunter Valley estate and it sat abandoned until two wine families stepped in to revive it.
In September 2017, Lindemans was acquired by the McGuigan and Peterson families, who were determined to return the property to its historical roots.
“The property has produced extraordinary wines that have assisted in building the reputation of the Hunter Valley as one of the world’s highestquality wine regions. And now the site's heritage will be protected at all costs in recognition of the great history we possess in our region,” said Brian McGuigan
Central to plans to develop the Estate was reverted back to the original name of Ben Ean in a nod to its past while stocking the cellar door with iconic wine brands from its famous families’ wines such as Petersons Wines, Savannah Estate, Lisa McGuigan Wines, Neil McGuigan Wines, Penfolds, Gunpowder Wines and Weerona Wines is underscored by the tagline ‘from our wine families to yours’.
Dedicated to maintaining and developing the estate as a salute to some of the best-known viticulturists and winemakers of the last 170 years in the Hunter, the team has returned the 175-year-strong winery and vineyard to its former glory after extensive refurbishment to the Ben Ean Cellar Door and Baumé Restaurant and converting the tin shed that housed John McDonald’s distillery in 1907 into the uber-luxurious The Still House
The Still House has become the most sought-after destination for VIPs and those ‘in the know’ who want to enjoy private dining and tasting experiences while soaking up the extraordinary heritage of this once-humble building where the original copper brandy still sits with a historical beauty all of its own. The shelves are stocked with old Lindeman’s and Penfolds wines, some dating back to the 1930s, and the space is used to host private tastings and dining events that are nothing short of bucket-list experiences.
A must-include stop on your Hunter Valley itinerary, Ben Ean is open seven days a week. For restaurant bookings and more information about events and functions, visit www.benean.com.au.

Blanchies Gluten-Free Hotspot in Pokolbin's Vineyards
WORDS LIANE MORRIS
Blanchies on Leisure is a café/restaurant located inside the Leisure Inn at Pokolbin, with views stretching out over the vineyard, paddocks, and dam. It offers a family-friendly menu and atmosphere (kids love the visiting ducks) at affordable prices in the heart of wine country. It also offers a true gluten-free dining experience that is safe for those with coeliacs.
Chef and owner Matthew Blanch grew up in Pokolbin and, at the age of 16, apprenticed to Matt Dillow at The Verandah restaurant. He opened the first Blanchies in Branxton in 2018, moved it to Cessnock in 2019 and then finally moved it “home” to Pokolbin in April of last year.
It was family and friends who were living with the challenges of coeliac disease that inspired Matthew to specialise in gluten-free.
“Here at Blanchies, all our fryers, grills, and pans are 100 per cent coeliac safe with no cross-contamination. We make everything fresh in-house daily to order, and we’re home to the best GF pancakes in the Hunter Valley!” says Matthew.
“Visitors to the valley hear about our gluten-free menu and feel safe eating here. I’m keen to educate other chefs about what it takes to produce a truly gluten-free menu. Of course, you don’t have to eat gluten-free; it’s really only the bread component of our menu that gets changed out.”
The Blanchies on Leisure menu features steaks, burgers, schnitzels and fish. Everything is made in-house, and the menus are posted daily on social media. The two most popular breakfast dishes are the Turkish Eggs (garlic labneh, chilli oil, cucumber, tomato, pickled onion, spicy grape sauce and flatbread) and the Pancakes with a choice between Butterscotch Pancakes or the American Pancakes (bacon, scrambled eggs, sausage. maple syrup and butter).
The most popular lunch is a choice of one of the many burgers available or the $15 Monday to Friday lunch selection, which includes classics such as Bangers and Mash with gravy or Salt and Pepper Squid with salad and chips.
Open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch, Blanchies also offers picnics, platters, and catering/BBQ packs and is looking at wedding catering in the near future. Follow them on Facebook for up-to-date menus – search @blanchies-on-leisure or call 0421 559 807.

SONGSPIRALS: Connecting Songs to Country
Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) will launch SONGSPIRALS this month, showcasing a remarkable collection of Aboriginal works. From Saturday, 29 June, through Sunday, 18 August, visitors will have
the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the Yolŋu people living in Bawaka Country, in North East Arnhem Land, through diverse mediums, including print-making, weaving, and audiovisual works.
Traditionally sung by Aboriginal people to awaken Country, songspirals enable the life-giving connections between people and place. While much of the existing literature has focused on the roles of men, SONGSPIRALS offers a rare and intimate insight into the crucial role of Aboriginal women in keening milkarri by sustaining and bringing to life these songlines.
SONGSPIRALS explores the profound Yolŋu kinship system, Gurrutu, and features five significant songspirals: Wuymirri (whale), Wukun (gathering of the clouds), Guwak (messenger bird), Wititj (rainbow serpent), and Goŋ-Gurtha (Fire keeper). These songspirals are ancient, dynamic expressions that connect people to the land, each other, and the cosmos.
The exhibition is inspired by the latest book by the Gay'wu Group of Women, Songspirals: Sharing Women’s Wisdom of Country through Songlines (2020). It invites audiences on a journey through ancient songs, poems, ceremonies, and maps that provide a radically different understanding of humans and their place within the environment. Through close collaboration with Yolŋu researchers, the exhibition aims to nourish and share Indigenous and Country-led understandings, ensuring the keening of songspirals is preserved and offers an invitation to share in some of what the Yolŋu people know and do as they live songspirals today.
Experience this unique and powerful exhibition that seeks to foster deep, healthy relationships between people and place amidst the challenges of environmental change. The official opening will be held at PACC on Saturday, 6 July, from 12pm to 2pm, proudly supported by Lisa McGuigan Wines. The exhibition will be open on weekends from 10am to 2pm and Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 4:30pm. Entry is free. Visit www.mypacc.com.au/Whats-on/Songspirals-2024 for more information.
Located at the gateway to the stunning Hunter Valley, The Valley Brewhouse has something for everyone. Enjoy a delicious meal from our bistro then join us for a brewery tour or beer tasting! On the weekend you can enjoy live music & smoked meats in our beer garden.

A Unique Community of Vines and Wines
With a boutique vineyard, award-winning wines and an exclusive residential community, Kelman Vineyard is the perfect place to visit for a day, linger for a weekend or stay for a lifetime.
Established in 1996 by Stewart Ewen, Kelman Vineyard is named in honour of William Kelman, who travelled to Australia with John Busby (father of James Busby) in 1824, marrying John’s daughter Katherine in 1827 in Sydney. A fitting tribute to one of the founding fathers of Australian wine and one of the earliest vignerons in the Hunter Valley, Kelman Vineyard consists of approximately 100 acres nestled in a quiet corner of Pokolbin near Mount View.
At the heart of the estate is the flourishing vineyard, which was planted in the rich, fertile soil of the property in 1997 and now covers 23 acres.
After celebrating its first vintage in 1999, Kelman Estate’s premium range of wines quickly won favourable attention from wine show judges, with the triple medal-winning 2000 Semillon setting the standard for a long line of award-winning wines.
Since then, Kelman has won many awards and medals and is highly regarded by wine reviewers and judges alike with a range of exceptional wines that include Shiraz, Semillon and Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Semillon blends, Chardonnay Semillon, Tempranillo blends, Blanc de Blanc Sparkling Chardonnay, Rosé, Moscato and Liqueur Muscat. Their wines are made in limited quantities, depending on the availability of good quality fruit from that vintage.
What is unique about Kelman’s vineyard and the wines it produces is the way it has been integrated into the broader community that also calls the estate home. The vines are purposely planted to meander between the estate’s privately owned properties, creating a unique landscape that is no longer possible to replicate anywhere else in Australia. This integration not only adds to the beauty of the community but also fosters a sense of shared ownership and pride among the residents.
While residents own their land and their houses, the community owns the vines and their fruit. Although residents are invited to enjoy living within the tranquil surroundings simply, many also choose to become more involved in the community and the operation of the vineyard.
As you’d expect from any quality winery, the estate boasts a beautiful cellar door set in a converted homestead. It is open Fridays through Sundays and offers tastings and sales of all its premium wines.
The cellar door also houses an extensive collection of historical artefacts and documents that chronicle the journey of wine pioneers William Kelman (1800 -1863) and James Busby (1800 – 1871). These include original vineyard maps, letters, and tools used in the early days of winemaking. They are on show in the Barrel Room, providing a fascinating insight into the history and influence both men had on the development of the wider Hunter wine region.
To learn more about Kelman or purchase its wines via the estate’s online store, visit www.kelmanvineyard.com.au.
Pick of the {Kelman} Crop
Made using the traditional method, this sparkling wine has spent four years on lees with a low dosage to produce a wine of distinction. Time has added further complexity and character to this early hand-picked Chardonnay. This 2018 Blanc de Blancs has a beautiful fine bead with a light honey gold colour. From the first bubble burst, there is a creamy texture with faint toast characteristics. Pairs well with savoury or sweet foods, it is equally at home with seafood, delicate white fish, chicken, spicy light pasta, salmon and dill roulades as it is with pavlova, berries, panna cotta or Danish pastries.
SEMILLON 2023
This classic Hunter variety of hand-picked Semillon presents a pale straw colouring with a green hue typical of the variety. The wine showcases lemon and lime citrus flavours with hints of lemongrass and other exotic notes. Cool fermented to ensure the retention of the aromatics and flavours. With a finely balanced palate, this wine will drink well young and with age.

Artists Reimagine Liddell Power Station's Legacy
Dual exhibitions in Muswellbrook and Singleton are showcasing the creative responses of 16 artists invited to mark the decommissioning of the Upper Hunter's iconic Liddell power station. The "in-residence" program, part of the innovative LiddellWORKS partnership between Arts Upper Hunter (AUH) and AGL, competitively selected these artists from across the Hunter region and beyond.
During Liddell's final days, the artists gained access to the retired coal-fired station and used it as their muse, model, and subject. Some even incorporated parts of the station into their remarkable artworks, seeking to record its transformation and honour the legacy of its people.
The exhibitions are currently running at Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre until 25 August and at Singleton Arts & Cultural Centre until 11 August.
Liddell powered businesses and homes across NSW for over half a century until it was decommissioned in April 2022. These exhibitions are not just about art; they celebrate Liddell's closure, offering a unique perspective on this iconic station's final chapter.
Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre is at 1-3 Bridge St, Muswellbrook, and Singleton Arts & Cultural Centre is at 23 Maitland Rd, Singleton.
