A Relaxed and Welcoming Addition to Wine Country

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

Latitude 32 Wines, located on Hermitage Road Pokolbin, invites you to visit their new cellar door. Featuring sweeping views of the vineyard, set against the backdrop of the Brokenback Mountains, this new kid on the block has already taken out four and a half stars awarded by James Halliday in its first year of operation.

Emma White was a finance executive before pivoting to her passion for premium wine. She completed her Diploma in Wine and purchased two properties in the Hunter, one of which was a former Tyrells vineyard with 45-year-old vines. Emma’s motto is “fun with serious intent,” and Latitude 32 is the embodiment of that.

The new cellar door opened in April this year and is styled like a modern farmhouse.

“I wanted to create a cosy home-style space,” said Emma. “It’s like the front room of someone’s home, with various seating arrangements to suit whatever makes people feel comfortable, including outside seating on the lawn. We used lots of glass in the cellar door so

that people could enjoy the view across the vines. There’s a verandah and patio and lawn games.

“Kids of all ages love the giant Connect Four, giant Jenga, Quoits and Ten Pin Bowling. We’re dog-friendly, and during the winter months we have a fire pit. We sell wine by the glass and encourage people to take their glass and wander around the vineyards, take a stroll to the dam, feel that connection to the land. It’s a relaxed atmosphere.”

Visitors to the cellar door can enjoy a delicious selection of light snacks with their wines, including a vegan cheese board, but the real point of difference here is the dumplings and wine pairing with various flavour combinations which change regularly, including pork and truffle, Thai chicken, beef and Korean cabbage and vegetarian options.

Latitude 32 Wines Cellar Door is hosting the launch night of the D’Vine Food & Wine Festival on Friday, 4 October, from 6pm. There will be a roaring firepit, games, a two-course dinner and live music. Tickets are available from www.d-vine.com.au/product/loving-local. The cellar door is open Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Book your tastings at www.latitude32wines.com/cellar-door.

THE VALLEY BREWHOUSE

Crafting the Hunter Valley's Beer Scene

WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER

IMAGES SOURCE THE VALLEY BREWHOUSE

If craft beer and good times are what you’re after during your stay in the Hunter Valley, the Valley Brewhouse should be at the top of your must-see list of destinations. Home to the region’s original craft brewery and located at the site of the heritage-listed brickworks at Nulkaba, it offers award-winning craft beers and tasting experiences, delicious food and live entertainment in a spacious family-friendly venue with a large beer garden and enormous kids playground.

You know you’ve arrived at the Valley Brewhouse when you spy the distinctive heritage-listed beehive-shaped red brick kilns out the front. These are the kilns that were used to make clay bricks, roofing tiles and sewage pipes required by the region for the best part of a century. The 10-acre site was originally chosen in 1880 for its rich clay deposits in the soil, which were considered ideal for making bricks. At one point, it was the largest employer in the region outside the mines, and during the Second World War, it was deemed an essential service for the war effort.

It was in 1989 that the property was converted to a tavern, and the accommodation was added in 2002 for visitors to Hunter Valley wine country wanting to extend their time here. Ironically, just as the local

mainstream breweries were closing down in Cardiff in the 80s, what would become the region’s first craft brewery was enjoying the first phase of its development as a tavern. But it wouldn’t be until 2003 that the brewery would be built, and the founding Head Brewer, Luke Scott started brewing craft beer under the name of the Hunter Beer Company. Current Head Brewer Keith Grice was employed by Scott in 2006, taking over as Head Brewer when Scott left in 2007.

“When we started out here, there were around 50 breweries in Australia,” said Keith.

“Now, even in this economic climate, there are around 700. Blue Tongue came along just after us, but we were the original craft brewery in the region after all the mainstream closures in the 80s.”

Grice has a well-earned reputation in the industry as one of the founding fathers of the craft in the Hunter Valley and has won multiple awards over two decades for his brews.

“I moved to Newcastle from the countryside around Junee and Albury to study chemistry at the university. I had ambitions to be an academic until I realised it was all about securing funding for your research. I used to make home brews as a student to make cheap beer, but it wasn’t until years later, when I took it up as a hobby, running science experiments in my garage, that I caught the beer bug! It became an obsession, and it just made sense to get a job to subsidise my brewing habit!”

Grice has remained at the brewery even after it changed hands and is looking forward to a more stable future now that it is under the Rogers Hotels banner.

“Campbell Rogers and business partner Josh Gamgee purchased the property earlier this year, and we’re already seeing huge positive changes. The Rogers Hotels group has a wealth of experience in running pubs. They’ve set up processes and systems that provide a smoother-running operation and a better experience for our customers,” said Keith.

Rogers Hotels also owns and operates several venues across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, including the Sunnyside Tavern, the Mayfield Hotel, the Colliery Inn, the Central Hotel in Stroud and the Holmesville Hotel. Campbell Rogers was in finance before he started running hotels in Sydney around 2009 because he “enjoyed being in them”. He’s been running hotels in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley since 2014.

“When it comes to running a good pub, it’s all about the atmosphere, the staff and the locals who come regularly.

"It’s all about creating an environment that people enjoy and want to spend time in."

"It has to be fun, safe, and serve delicious food. All our venues are a little different and a bit quirky in their own way. The Valley Brewhouse is obviously a brewery of craft beer and it’s my first time working in this space. It’s a lot of fun,” said Rogers.

According to Grice, the location so close to wine country makes the market different to that of other breweries.

“Being so close to wine country means our market is a bit different,” said Grice.

“People are on a visit, on holiday, looking for fun experiences, and wanting to try different things. We tailor our beers to suit that market. We have a small core range, and we do a lot of one-off limited releases. Sometimes they’re classical and other times, they’re more whimsical.

“We’re always trying to make our beer better. If you’re resting on your laurels, you get left behind by the market, and the beer quality in Australia is getting better and better with a more sophisticated consumer palate. I always try to catch up with the home brewers who are a weird and wacky bunch, but that’s where a lot of innovation happens.”

Grice is joined in the brewery by fellow brewer Daniel Gayner and the Cellar Door Manager Claire Bullen, and he sees their work as a team effort. Visitors to the Valley Brewhouse can take brewery tours, which last up to one hour and include three 200 ml beers on Fridays at 5pm and Saturdays at 12pm and 5pm, or guided tastings, which last up to 45 minutes and include eight 75ml beers at 11am and 2pm from Tuesday to Saturday. You can also purchase tasting paddles and choose four 200 ml beers. The tours and guided tastings are widely considered to be the best in the business.

“The three of us are passionate about what we do. Although Claire is not actively brewing, she certainly plays a big part in what we produce. Claire’s love of Bounty Bars inspired our coconut and chocolate-flavoured stout, we call it the Bounty Hunter. And her next idea, which we’re not sure how we will create, is a chocolate pretzel-flavoured beer for Oktoberfest. We’re also working on four other German-influenced beers for Oktoberfest, and we’ve started brewing our Spring beers – we’re working on a hoppy amber and a ginger and lime recipe.”

Other limited-release beers available now include Tea Time, an English Bitter with a biscuity malt flavour with hints of honey and caramel, a delicate floral, musky, citrus note and a light bitterness to finish. The Pilsner malt flavour drives the Czech Lager – think freshly baked bread, with a gentle spiciness from the Saaz hops. Perhaps the best-selling beer is the Draught, an approachable golden ale that Grice calls his “gateway beer”. For people who are already comfortable with craft beers, the Hazy Pale Ale proves a popular choice with its tropical and citrus fruit flavours.

Each month, on the Thursday before the last weekend of the month, a Beer Pre-Launch event is held in the Brewery, featuring that month’s

limited releases paired with canapés and dessert for $49 per person. Then, on the last Sunday of every month, patrons can enjoy the new limited-release beers with delicious melt-in-the-mouth smoked meats from the Smoke House Kitchen located in the outdoor Beer Garden while listening to a Blues band.

There is live entertainment every weekend, and the Smoke House Kitchen is open from 11.30am to 5pm every Saturday and Sunday with a constantly changing menu. Locals are encouraged to become regulars with a local’s discount card – just ask at the bar. And for those who aren’t into beer, there is a wine list featuring local Hunter Valley wines and a cocktail menu with all the classics.

The Bistro is open for lunch from 11.30am to 2.30pm, with a bar snack menu from 2.30pm to 5pm and for dinner Sundays to Wednesdays from 5pm to 8pm and Thursdays to Saturdays from 5pm to 8.30pm.

The main menu features premium pub meals that include housesmoked chicken wings tossed in chipotle honey and served with a blue cheese sauce or mushroom and cheese arancini with truffle oil, garlic or chilli prawns, schnitzels with all the toppers, wagyu or brisket beef burgers, chicken or veggie burgers, steaks, salads, and classics such as bangers and mash or lamb shanks. Plenty of mains are on offer for under $30, and the bar snacks menu starts at just $10.

Three separate function areas are available to host parties and events: the brewery, the lounge and even the beer garden. There is also an extensive catering menu available. Weddings and conferences are held in the newly renovated, separate KilnHaus, a dedicated and separate function space that features beautiful, exposed beams, adjoining private bar and restroom facilities.

The Valley Brewhouse is set on five acres with a massive lawn featuring twenty picnic tables and a very large, brand-new kids’ playground. It’s the ideal place to relax with family and friends, whether you’re a local or a visitor to the area. If you’re serious about your beer, this is the place to be. With ten craft beers on tap, a changing menu of creative brews developed by the onsite team, and regular live music and delicious food, The Valley Brewhouse is open seven days until late on Wine Country Drive at Nulkaba.

HUNTER VALLEY CHOCOLATE CO.

As one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the country, the Hunter Valley’s wine-tasting trails are always a good choice for those seeking to make the most of a day trip to the vineyards. But the tastes of the region go well beyond its world-renowned wines, with the Hunter home to a wide variety of local produce, which you can source fresh from the farm gate or, in this case, straight from the factory.

Established at the turn of the last century, the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company has grown to become one of the area’s premier attractions for a legion of chocolate aficionados across the country.

Known for innovation and dedication to quality, the team continually strives for perfection and uses only the finest Belgian couverture chocolate and Australian dried fruits and nuts. A distilled pure fruit oil is used for infusion and results in a subtle but authentic flavour of the fruit.

Owner Jo Clarke said Hunter Valley Chocolate Company was conscious about using a quality Swiss or Belgium couverture as the basis for their range of products “because it is like any recipe that is prepared by a chef - the best result comes from using top-quality ingredients.”

The secret of their success (says Chocolatelier Peter) is keeping fillings and flavourings very simple, recognising that the chocolate itself should be the experience.

Visit the Chocolate and Fudge Factory at 2320 Broke Rd, Pokolbin, where you can watch Peter concoct his creations in the kitchen or sit back in the Twenty-3-Twenty Café and drink in the chocolate-based excellence surrounding you.

You’ll also find a store at Peterson House (Corner of Broke Rd and Wine Country Drive), where bubbles and chocolate form the ultimate gastronomic partnership.

Whether you're a dedicated chocoholic or simply looking to add a sweet touch to your Hunter Valley experience, a visit to the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company promises a journey of indulgence. From watching the chocolatiers at work to sampling their creations, every moment is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of artisanal chocolate.

Medieval Magic and Mead in Broke

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

The charming township of Broke is an easy 18-minute drive from the bustling Pokolbin area of the Hunter Valley. It is home to a number of unique attractions that offer something a little different to your average cellar door. One of these attractions is the Hunter Valley’s only meadery, which sells honey wine, honey products, and Viking merch!

Martin Jackson is a self-confessed nerd who grew up in Newcastle with a penchant for medieval, Viking fantasy video games. In 2008, he

began experimenting with creating the drink that his online avatars enjoyed, and he started home-brewing mead. In a natural confluence of his interests, in 2015, he took up beekeeping as a hobby, building almost 75 hives.

“I became addicted to beekeeping,” said Martin.

“I even taught others beekeeping skills. Over the years I perfected my mead brewing and wondered if I could create a business from it. We began selling mead online in 2020, and it went well, shipping all over Australia. The next step was to have a cellar door, a physical space we

HONEY WINES AUSTRALIA MEADERY

Mead, also known as honey wine is the oldest fermented drink in the world

We at Honey Wines Australia Meadery are beekeepers as well as mead makers. Our hard working bees visited around one million flowers to produce each bottle and flew 44,000km. Our meadery cellar door is based in Broke, part of the Hunter Valley region of NSW. With shipping to your door just about anywhere in Australia.

could sell from and provide a unique experience for the Hunter Valley. I was surprised that there were no other meaderies in the region. The closest is Mudgee.”

Martin purchased the property in Broke and opened the cellar door in 2023. His hives were unfortunately eradicated during the varroa outbreak, and he now has just ten hives on the property and has to source honey from other local producers as he uses over 5,000 kilos of honey per year. He is looking forward to the day he can create hands-on beekeeping experiences for visitors to the cellar door.

Mead is the world’s oldest fermented alcoholic drink, pre-dating grape wine and beer by thousands of years and is now enjoying a revival. Made by fermenting honey with water, it can be flavoured with fruits, spices, herbs, or flowers. It often has a rich, honeyed flavour profile with a smooth, warming finish and is versatile enough to be paired with many foods or enjoyed on its own. Depending on the type of honey and additional ingredients used, the taste can vary widely, offering a unique tasting experience.

Martin offers tastings by the paddle with six shot glasses of different meads per paddle. Current mead flavours include Traditional Mead, Lemon and Ginger, Vanilla, Apple, Cherry & Coconut, Maple Syrup, Orange and Grapefruit, Mana Potion (mixed fruits), Stamina Potion (lemon and lime), Regen Potion (ginger and chocolate) and Health Potion (chilli and cherry).

“As we sell out of flavours, I’ll brew new ones or sometimes modify the flavours, such as adding chocolate flavours to a coffee mead to make it a mocha style. There are always new meads to try. We recently renamed and restyled some of the meads into ‘potions’, which has great appeal for those into fantasy video games – they are labelled with Viking runes and have a weathered look to them. They have proved incredibly popular – beyond my wildest dreams.”

Visitors to the cellar door also have the opportunity to try six different flavoured types of honey, including chocolate creamed honey, cinnamon creamed honey, and chilli honey sauce. Martin encourages bookings for the 45-minute tasting experiences so visitors don’t miss hearing all the facts and stories about mead and beekeeping.

“Once I get started, I could talk about this subject all day, and I’ve had so many people tell me that their visit was the highlight of their trip to the Hunter Valley. People are really interested in the history of the product and the art of beekeeping.”

In addition to mead and honey, Martin also has a highly popular range of Viking-styled products, including engraved drinking horns made from the horns of Indian and African cattle, which he sources from India for his designs. There’s even a Viking-themed pizza cutter, which sells out every Christmas!

The cellar door is open from Friday to Sunday every weekend and can be open upon request at other times with a minimum $100 purchase. The set tasting sessions are at 11.30am, 2pm and 4pm. Paddles cost $20 for one, which you can share, or if you purchase more than one, $15 per paddle. Located at 72 Wollombi St, Broke, bookings can be made at www.honeywinesaustralia.com.au. All products are available to purchase online.

Hunter Winemaker to Chair Sydney Royal Wine Show

Hunter Valley De Iuliis winemaker and owner Michael (Mike) De Iuliis has been announced as the new Chair of Judges of the Sydney Royal Wine Show.

As a fourth-generation wine enthusiast, Mike’s passion for the Australian wine industry started at a young age and only blossomed when his parents purchased a 20-hectare property in the Hunter Valley and planted the winery’s first vines.

After a Bachelor of Science degree and a post-graduate degree in Oenology, De Iuliis became the winemaker and owner of his family business, De Iuliis Wines. Unafraid of change, De Iuliis has continued to drive his family legacy forward during his time at the helm, expanding the winery with new and alternative varieties and, in turn, earning the business countless accolades.

In addition to being an award-winning winemaker, De Iuliis completed the Len Evans Tutorial in 2004 and has extensive experience as a Chair of Judge and a Panel Chair, both nationally and internationally. De Iuliis has been part of the Sydney Royal Panel since 2017.

“The opportunity to be Chair of Judges at the 2025 Sydney Royal Wine Show is a massive responsibility and one I do not take lightly,” said newly appointed Chair of Judges Mike De Iuliis.

“Sarah Crowe has done a fantastic job over the past three years, successfully guiding and protecting the integrity of the competition. She has ensured producers receive the vital feedback they require while equally celebrating those creating extraordinary wine.

“I have some big shoes to fill.”

When asked about the opportunity and what it means to be named Chair, De Iuliis said he looks forward to giving back to both his industry and the next generation.

“The ability to give back to an industry that has been so wonderful to me is something I am quite excited for; not many people get the opportunity,” De Iuliis said.

“It is also a great honour to help lead the next generation of wine judges and provide them with a platform to gain experience at one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious wine shows. Looking back, it does not feel like long ago that I was an aspiring up-and-coming wine show judge. I think it will be a lot of fun.”

“If you are a winner at Sydney Royal, it resonates quite loudly with the industry. As a winemaker, there is no greater feeling than winning at Sydney Royal.”

Rosé Revolution

From Ancient Roots to Modern Sensation

Rosé has undeniably become a global sensation. Over the past two decades, it has evolved from a niche wine to one of the world's fastest-

growing wine markets, captivating both casual drinkers and wine professionals alike. This pink wine's surge in popularity has led to an explosion of high-quality, age-worthy Rosés that wine enthusiasts can get excited about.

Despite its trendy status, Rosé boasts ancient roots. Tracing back to ancient Greece, it's one of the oldest yet most modern wines. Today, almost all wine-producing regions craft Rosé, with France leading the charge, particularly in Tavel, Provence, and the Loire Valley. Other notable regions include Italy's Piedmont, Spain's Rioja, and Austria's Styria.

Colour is crucial to Rosé's appeal, ranging from pale copper and pastel pink to magenta and even orange. Its taste profile is equally diverse, spanning sweet, dry, light, and creamy varieties. This diversity allows Rosé to cater to a wide range of palates and preferences.

Australian Rosés, known for their freshness and vibrancy, are primarily made from Shiraz and Grenache, with minimal skin contact giving them their signature 'blush.' Other varieties like Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir also produce delicious versions, showcasing the versatility of this wine style.

While perfect for warm weather, Rosé can be enjoyed year-round. It shines at summer picnics and BBQs, offering a magical complement to outdoor gatherings. The image of friends sharing a chilled bottle of Rosé on a sunny afternoon has become iconic in wine culture.

Rosé's versatility extends to food pairings. It combines the freshness of white wine with the structure of red, making it an excellent match for various dishes. From salads and antipasto platters to fish dishes and curries, Rosé handles a wide range of flavours and spices with ease. It's particularly enjoyable with soft goat cheese, creating a classic pairing that highlights the wine's subtle flavours.

Typically featuring a delicate flavour profile and a balance of sweetness and acidity, Rosé is best served young and chilled. Its refreshing nature makes it a perfect palate cleanser, ideal for sipping alone or alongside a meal. The crisp, often fruity notes of Rosé make it an approachable choice for both wine novices and connoisseurs, contributing to its widespread appeal.
