DE IULIIS WINES
A Legacy of Excellence in the Hunter Valley
As you explore the picturesque Hunter Valley, one name stands out among the region's top wineries: De Iuliis. Pronounced "dee-you-lee-iss" (you're welcome), this family-owned winery has been a beacon of quality and innovation for over two decades. Founded by Mike De Iuliis, the winery continues to impress visitors and critics alike with its award-winning wines and commitment to sustainability.
The De Iuliis story is steeped in rich winemaking tradition, tracing back to the mountains of Abruzzi, Italy. There, Mike's great-grandfather Donato and grandfather Celeste crafted Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, sharing their passion with the local community. This love for winemaking crossed oceans when the family migrated to Australia in the 1950s. It wasn't until 1987 that Mike's parents, Anna and Joss, purchased a property in Pokolbin, sowing the seeds for what would become De Iuliis Wines.
Today, the winery operates three distinct vineyards across the Hunter Valley. From the original Lovedale Road property to the historic Steven Vineyard and the Shiraz-focused Talga Road vineyard, each site contributes to the diverse portfolio of
De Iuliis wines. Visitors can sample classic Hunter Valley varietals like Semillon and Shiraz alongside recent additions such as Touriga, Montepulciano, and Pecorino.
De Iuliis Wines' commitment to excellence hasn't gone unnoticed. The winery proudly boasts 5 Underlined Red Stars from the Halliday Wine Companion, placing it among the top 2% of Australian wineries. Their Shiraz Touriga blend has become a signature wine, consistently earning accolades at regional and state-wide wine shows.
But for Mike De Iuliis, success isn't just about awards. He's a passionate advocate for sustainability in the wine industry, viewing it as crucial to the future of winemaking and wine quality. Visitors to the winery might hear about innovative practices like the use of biochar in the vineyards, which helps reduce greenhouse gas levels and improve soil fertility. The focus on alternative grape varieties better suited to changing climate conditions is another testament to De Iuliis' forwardthinking approach.
The wine industry has evolved significantly in recent years, with a greater focus on the visitor experience. De Iuliis has adapted admirably, offering a range of structured, educational tasting experiences that cater to the modern wine enthusiast. From intimate small-batch tastings to comprehensive winery tours, there's something for every level of wine lover.
Mike is quick to credit his talented team for the winery's continued success. Their collective efforts have ensured that De Iuliis remains one of the top cellar door experiences in the Hunter Valley. This team-driven approach extends to their retail strategy, with a select range of De Iuliis wines available in major retailers like Dan Murphy's. This carefully balanced approach increases brand exposure while encouraging wine lovers to visit the cellar door for a more comprehensive tasting experience.
As De Iuliis Wines moves forward, the focus remains on producing high-quality, award-winning wines while advancing sustainable practices and adapting to changing consumer preferences. It's a delicate balance of preserving rich winemaking heritage while embracing innovation, and De Iuliis seems to have found the sweet spot.
For visitors to the Hunter Valley, a stop at De Iuliis Wines promises more than just a tasting – it's an opportunity to experience the passion, history, and forward-thinking approach that makes this winery a true Hunter Valley gem. Whether you're a seasoned wine connoisseur or a curious novice, the welcoming team at De Iuliis is ready to guide you through their exceptional range of wines.
So, as you plan your Hunter Valley adventure, be sure to include De Iuliis Wines on your itinerary. It's a chance to taste award-winning wines, learn about sustainable winemaking, and experience firsthand why this family-owned winery continues to be a shining example of the best the Hunter Valley has to offer. Your palate and understanding of modern Australian winemaking will thank you!

The Pokolbin South Trail is located on the southern side of Pokolbin, stretching from Broke Road to Oakey Creek Road and encapsulating the Parish of Pokolbin
Officially established in the 1880s, the ‘Parish’ is the oldest wine region in Australia, encompassing some of the region’s best viticulture sites. Although much of the Hunter Valley region is labelled ‘Pokolbin’, the Parish of Pokolbin is a very distinct area lying at the foothills of the Brokenback Range in the southern part of the Valley. As a result, the area includes the names of some of the early pioneering families who continue to leave their mark on the wine industry.
Unsurprisingly, it’s home to many of the area’s most popular places to wine, dine, shop, stay and play – and back in 2010, several such destinations came together to form the Parish of Pokolbin group and build on the area’s solid foundation of history, heritage and unique character.
The ideal viticultural conditions of the Pokolbin South Trail produce some of the most highly regarded examples of the acclaimed Hunter Valley wine styles of Shiraz, Semillon, Verdelho and Chardonnay, promising an authentic and unique curated wine experience for both the novice and expert wine enthusiast.
In addition to classic Hunter wines, you’ll also find varieties not commonly seen in the region like Tempranillo, Fiano, Grenache, Vermentino, and Nebbiolo.

Fun with serious intent is the catch cry of Emma White, owner of Latitude 32 Wines. Her modern twist on the Hunter Valley wine experience is about enjoying exceptional wines and fostering a connection with the land.
Located on Hermitage Road Pokolbin, the newly renovated cellar door features sweeping views of the vineyard against the Broken Back Mountains. It's a place where picnics are encouraged, lawn games can be enjoyed, and wine can be purchased by the glass and taken for a stroll through the vineyard.
Emma, originally from Essex in the UK, moved to Australia in 2000 with her husband David for a two-year work secondment. They fell in love with Australia and stayed, developing a passion for wine through their travels.
"We were fortunate that our jobs entailed international travel and corporate hospitality. Our friends called us wine-chasers because we'd always head to the nearest wine region to develop our knowledge," Emma recalls.
In 2018, they purchased a property in central Pokolbin, planted by Tyrrells in the 1980s. After facing challenges with drought, bushfires, and hail damage in their early vintages, they seized an opportunity in 2023 to acquire the old Mistletoe vineyard, complete with award-winning wines and a cellar door. Emma's winemaking philosophy is rooted in her belief that wine is made in the vineyard. "One advantage of being new to this industry is that we're not beholden to generations of traditions. We come at winemaking from a consumer's perspective, giving us enormous freedom and flexibility in our vintages," she explains.
This approach allows Latitude 32 to embrace vintage variation fully. "We make what we like to drink and won't force our vintages to taste the same year after year. It's more like the European style of winemaking, where you talk about different vintages and embrace the variation," Emma says.
Latitude 32 produces a diverse range of wines, including Semillon, two styles of Chardonnay, Semillon Chardonnay blends, Shiraz, Méthode Traditionelle Sparkling from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and Rosé from Shiraz. They're also exploring Spanish varietals Mencia and Tempranillo, and the Italian Aglianico.
One of their most exciting offerings is a white-red wine (yes, you read that correctly!) called The Enigma
"It's a wine I've wanted to make for a long time. A lot of research, love, and energy went into making this, and it has turned out exactly how I wanted it to - I'm very excited about this one," says Emma.
The cellar door experience at Latitude 32 is designed to be relaxed and inviting – a cosy home-style space. The space includes outdoor seating on the lawn, giant lawn games like Connect Four and Jenga, and a fire pit during winter months. Dogs are welcome, and guests are encouraged to wander the grounds with a glass of wine, fostering that connection to the land that Emma values so highly.
A unique feature of the cellar door experience is the dumplings and wine pairing. Visitors can enjoy a variety of dumpling flavours, including pork and prawn, Szechuan beef, cheeseburger, and vegetarian options, carefully matched with Latitude 32's wines. This innovative pairing sets them apart from traditional cheese and wine offerings.
The cellar door also offers a selection of light snacks, including a vegan cheese board. Visitors can book breakfast hampers to enjoy in the vineyards from 9am or take walks through the vineyards with the winemaker and viticulturist.
Emma's commitment to the land extends to their vineyard practices. They're moving towards what she prefers to call 'regenerative' practices, including reducing tractor and diesel use, planting cover crops, and creating a self-sustaining ecosystem in the vineyard.
With winemaker Adam Holmberg joining the team, bringing experience from Tyrrells, Leogate Estate, and vintages across Europe and Napa Valley, Latitude 32 is poised for an exciting future. They're currently exporting to China and eyeing the European market next.
The cellar door is open Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Wine tastings start at $15 per person for seven tastings, or guests can purchase a glass of wine for $12. Once a month, they host a Friday Night Jam Session, a relaxed event with a food truck and plenty of wine until 9pm.
For Emma and the team at Latitude 32, it's all about putting a modern twist on wines and wine experiences while maintaining a deep respect for the land and the fruit. As Emma says, "We're excited to be able to experiment and have fun. We must be doing something right!"

Lovedale, often referred to as the “Heart of the Hunter,” is located just east of Pokolbin. The beautiful region is renowned not only for its family-owned and operated cellar doors and awardwinning wines but also for its community spirit and the entire lifestyle that has sprung up around it.
The name Lovedale combines the name of one of the early families of the district, the Loves, with the memory of Yorkshire's dales in England, and settlement in the area dates back to the early 1800s when there were significant land grants along Black Creek.
This area was particularly suitable for vineyards, and the history of Lovedale as a major wine-producing area can be dated to the time of settlement when local wheat and general produce farmers turned their hands to grape growing.
Lovedale is renowned for its boutique wineries and restaurants and the warmth and friendliness of the people who call the area home and host several events throughout the year, including the signature Lovedale Long Lunch held in May each year for over 30 years.
In Lovedale, you will find that the cellar doors are smaller and more boutiquestyled, so you can meet the owners and enjoy a more personalised experience. Lovedale is a place you can stay and while the hours away. But beware, you may not want to leave.

WINES
OF THE HUNTER
Where Tradition Meets Innovation
The Hunter Valley is renowned for having a talented list of innovative winemakers at the forefront of their profession and for producing some of the world's best and most distinctive wines – particularly Semillon and Shiraz, which are the hallmarks of this region.
The most recognisable of these is Hunter Valley Semillon – the Hunter Valley’s flagship variety and a truly outstanding wine in terms of quality and taste with a style that has not been replicated anywhere else in the world.
Other varieties grown include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Verdelho, which have all produced great Hunter wines.
SEMILLON
Hunter Valley Semillon is one of Australia’s most distinctive and celebrated white wines. Known for its unique style and longevity, this varietal has become synonymous with the region, setting it apart on the global wine stage. Semillon in the Hunter Valley is often picked early, at low sugar levels, which contributes to its characteristic light body, crisp acidity, and low alcohol content. Initially, these wines exhibit fresh citrus and green apple flavours, often accompanied by herbaceous notes. With time, these wines develop into a more complex, richer, fuller wine with great toasty complexity.
CHARDONNAY
Hunter Valley Chardonnay is a versatile and iconic wine known for its rich yet balanced style. In the Hunter, Chardonnay often showcases bright citrus and stone fruit flavours like peach and nectarine, with a subtle minerality reflective of the region's terroir. Winemakers employ various techniques, including barrel fermentation and lees aging, to add complexity, resulting in a creamy texture and hints of vanilla or toast. Unlike some other regions, Hunter Valley Chardonnay often strikes a delicate balance between freshness and oak influence, making it an elegant and food-friendly wine that appeals to a wide range of palates.
SHIRAZ
Hunter Valley Shiraz is medium-bodied, full of flavour and great with food. Characterised by soft tannins, bright red fruit flavours like cherry and plum, and earthy undertones, Hunter Valley Shiraz often exhibits a savoury complexity with hints of spice, leather, and tobacco as it ages. The region's warm, humid climate allows for gradual ripening, which contributes to the wine's balanced acidity and approachable structure.
MEDITERRANEAN VARIETALS - A NEW FRONTIER
While the region's signature varietals have defined its identity for generations, the emergence and growing popularity of Mediterranean grape varieties in the Hunter Valley reflects the region's adaptability and evolving winemaking culture.
The Hunter Valley’s challenging warm and humid climate, rising temperatures and frequent droughts, coupled with changing consumer tastes, has led to winemakers increasingly planting and experimenting with grape varieties that originate from the Mediterranean regions such as Spain, Italy, and parts of France where they share a similar warm climate.
As a result, a growing number of Hunter Valley Wineries have adopted alternative varieties that include Grenache, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Durif, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Petit Verdot and Gamay, amongst the reds and Vermentino, Fiano, Pinot Gris/ Grigio and Viognier amongst the whites – and with fantastic results.
The point and growing importance of these new varieties is not that they are the absolute future for Australian winemaking, but instead, they are an exciting addition to a still maturing and evolving industry.
The Hunter Valley’s rich tradition of producing exceptional Semillon, Shiraz, and Chardonnay remains the backbone of the region’s winemaking legacy. However, the emergence of Mediterranean varietals reflects the region's forward-thinking approach to winemaking, adding another dimension to our wine drinking and enjoyment, giving the consumer a touch of the exotic, new tastes and encouraging debate. Together, these traditional and new varietals offer a diverse and exciting range of wines that cater to both classic preferences and adventurous palates, ensuring that Hunter Valley remains at the forefront of Australian wine innovation.

TAMBURLAINE ORGANIC WINES
Pioneering Sustainable Viticulture
Mark Davidson, Managing Director and Chief Winemaker at Tamburlaine Organic Wines, has been crafting organic wines for decades. His unwavering commitment to sustainability has propelled Tamburlaine to become one of Australia's largest producers of award-winning organic wines.
"There’s plenty of evidence to prove the harmful effects of modern agricultural practices that aren’t organic in nature,” says Mark.
“We've proven that organic winemaking can be done, that it works, and I'm excited that consumers are now asking for it."
Historically, before the development and use of agricultural chemicals, all winemaking was, in effect, organic. Many agricultural chemicals were developed during the world wars – Mustard Gas, Agent Orange and the like. RoundUp, so commonly used today, contains many of the active ingredients used in Agent Orange. Using these chemicals makes sense from a business perspective because it makes the farms more productive. But the result is an accumulation of chemicals in the environment, the food chain and in consumers.
When Mark and his associates purchased Tamburlaine in 1985, organic winemaking was considered a fringe practice. Undeterred, Mark cautiously began implementing organic methods, gradually transitioning the winery to certified organic status through extensive research and experimentation. Today, Tamburlaine's vineyards in both the Hunter Valley and Orange are certified organic, and their production has grown fivefold, mirroring the evolving demand for ethical, organic, and sustainable products. Consumers increasingly seek transparency in their food and wine supply chains, a trend that aligns perfectly with Tamburlaine's ethos.
Mark's passion for environmental and human well-being drives Tamburlaine's success. As a pioneer in organic winemaking, he hopes to leave a legacy of sustainable viticulture for future generations, offering award-winning wines and positive experiences for all.

Located just 15 minutes from Pokolbin, Broke Fordwich is a Hunter Valley subregion representing 11% of the area's vineyards. The region offers premium wines, including Hunter Valley classics and emerging varieties, alongside local produce and dining experiences in a peaceful rural setting.
The Brokenback Mountain Range, Yellow Rock, and World Heritage wilderness define the landscape, creating a stunning backdrop for vineyards and cellar doors. The area holds deep cultural significance as the traditional land of the Wanaruah people ('people of the hills and plains'), whose descendants still live locally. Their cave paintings remain accessible today. The combination of natural beauty, wines, cuisine, and cultural heritage makes Broke Fordwich well worth a visit and an excellent reason to return.
Broke Fordwich... The Tranquil side of the Hunter Valley.

Nestled in the southern Hunter Valley, Wollombi is a historic village where colonial charm meets a contemporary food and wine culture. This former Great North Road waypoint has evolved into a sought-after destination for epicurean travellers while retaining its authentic country character.
The Wollombi Wine Trail features family-owned boutique wineries offering personal tasting experiences that contrast with the region's larger estates. Here, visitors often meet the winemakers themselves, sampling distinctive varieties like Verdelho and Semillon in historic settings or under shady verandahs. The village's culinary scene revolves around intimate cafes and restaurants housed in heritage sandstone buildings, where local eateries showcase regional produce and Hunter Valley specialties. Seasonal menus feature local cheeses, farm-fresh vegetables, and artisanal products from surrounding producers. Accommodation ranges from heritage guesthouses to boutique B&Bs set on expansive bushland properties, each offering a blend of colonial character and modern comfort. Regular markets bring together local artisans and food producers, while seasonal festivals celebrate the region's culinary highlights. Bordered by Laguna, Millfield, and the Broke-Fordwich wine region, Wollombi provides an ideal base for exploring the less-travelled corners of the Hunter Valley.

HOW TO Taste Wine
Not an expert wine taster yet but you would like to be one day? This five-step wine tasting process is a helpful tool for understanding your favourite wines and enjoying each aspect of the wine tasting experience.
1. LOOK
Pick up the glass by the stem to give yourself a clear view of the wine. Hold the glass up to white light, or against a white background such as a tablecloth or napkin and notice the depth of colour. The intensity of the colour is sometimes a signal of wine with a heavier body. White wines tend to appear amber, yellow or gold as it ages, whereas reds can be inky purple, brick red, or many shades in between.
Also, take notice if the wine is clear or if there are crystals or sediment present in the wine. Crystals that appear on the underside of the cork or at the bottom of the bottle is excess potassium bitartrate that has crystallised. Many winemakers choose not to filter out these during the winemaking process as they believe it detracts from the flavour and nuance of the wine. The crystals have no taste. Sediments, on the other hand, are solids left over from the winemaking process that are usually very bitter and can be removed through decanting the wine before consumption or through filtration.
2. SMELL Move your glass in small circles to swirl the wine and release aromas. After several seconds of swirling, hold the glass up to your nose and inhale – taking in the full range of the wine’s bouquet of aromas. The purpose of smelling wine before tasting is to give you a preview of what is to come when sipping – smell is an integral part of tasting as it is more precise and acute. Common aromas you may notice are floral, citrus, and tropical fruit for white wines, or berry, dried fruit, and spice for red wines.
3. TASTE Take an ample sip of wine, and swirl it in your mouth for a moment. With the wine still in your mouth, take in a bit of air and let it roll over your tongue, swishing it around to experience the texture and body of the wine.
You may observe some of the same fruit, floral or spice flavours that you noticed while smelling the wine. You may also notice some of the five tastes, such as sweetness on the tip of your tongue, sour from the acidity of the wine, or slight bitterness from the tannins.
4. TOUCH
The “weight” or “body” of wine can be described as light, medium, or full. Whites such as Pinot Grigio are considered light-bodied, while reds such as Cabernet are usually medium to full-bodied. Take a sip of wine and focus on how it feels in your mouth.
For example, Pinot Grigio will likely feel very light, while Chardonnay will often have a somewhat “rounder” mouthfeel due to its fuller body. Note the lingering impression that remains in your mouth after you swallow the wine – this is called the “finish”.
5. ASSESS What is your overall impression? Did you like the wine? Assess all previous steps by taking into consideration the look, smell, taste and touch of the wine and how they may or may not all work together. An outstanding wine will have balance among all these elements, and each aspect of the wine will be well-integrated.
Also assess the finish – notice if the aftertaste in your mouth is pleasant, or whether it lingers with you for a while.
FLUTE Great for sparkling wines, especially Prosecco. These glasses help maintain bubble finessé.
WHITE WINE GLASS Great for wines where the focus is on delicate fruit and floral aromatics. These glasses help maintain temperature.
AROMA COLLECTOR Known as “Burgundy Glasses”, these glasses do wonders with a lighter-bodied red like

Pinot Noir, and are also a great choice for oak-aged Chardonnay or a Rosé.
UNIVERSAL Great for most but great for spicy red wines or food wines, e.g. Tempranillo and Barbera.
OVERSIZED A superb choice for bolder and high tannin red wines.
DESSERT WINE GLASS Not actually necessary to taste these wines, but do however help with portion control!
