Is there anything more heart-warming than snuggling up with a good red on a Winters night? We think not! It is with this in mind that we give you our annual Big-Red Issue. Australia’s red grapes are amongst its greatest assets – after all, who could imagine a world without classic Australian Shiraz? The world’s classic premium red grape varieties are all found in abundance in the Hunter Valley where some of the oldest vines and most prominent names in Australian wine can be found. This month we navigate the red wines of the Hunter Valley and take a tour of the best of the best. Also on tour this month is acclaimed Australian Wildlife Artist – James Hough, who is celebrating his exceptional career with an extraordinary exhibition at Morpeth Gallery. Held over two weeks, this will be the first-ever solo exhibition of James Hough works. And with the artist in residence during his eight-day exhibition, painting and chatting to visitors, this is also your opportunity not only to appreciate fine art but also see a master at work. This month we also chat with Stephen and Tracy Drayton who are the passionate team behind the familyowned and operated Ivanhoe Wines.

As the fifth generation of one of Australia’s oldest winemaking families, Stephen may just have wine running through his veins, but Tracy says the wineries reputation for ‘Big Gutsy Reds’ may have more to do with the nutrientdense volcanic soils on the slopes of Mt Bright where the vineyard’s red grape varieties are grown. Read more on page 12. Lemon myrtle vodka. Turkish delight liqueur. Magical, colour-changing gin. These aren’t the kinds of spirits you’ll find at your everyday bottle shop – but you will find them (and plenty more) at a little place called Hunter Distillery. This month we spoke to Neil Langdon about this burgeoning business and learn why it’s the essential stop on the ‘wine trail’ for spirit lovers. As we go to press with this, the last of our Winter issues, we are enjoying a day filled with sunshine and a higher than average temperature. A few more of these will herald in budburst in just a few short weeks. Bring it on! Enjoy!

MEET THE MAKER

MAKAIRA

Designs

WORDS Michelle Meehan

As a part-time finance manager, Sheridan Purvis spends her days wrangling numbers. When she’s not in the office, however, the Maryland mother-of-two switches her focus to an equally tricky, yet far stickier topic – resin. Sheridan is the creative force behind Makaira Designs, a local business producing gorgeous resincoated homewares. A lifelong lover of arts and crafts, her passion morphed into a burgeoning side business after she was introduced to the colourful medium. “I did elective art classes all through high school, mainly focusing on oil painting and sculpture. After finishing I created pieces only occasionally until finding my love of resin,” Sheridan said. “I started Makaira Designs about two years ago after doing some initial larger wall art pieces with resin. “I wondered what else I could make using resin that would be more affordable for the purchaser and be able to be used or displayed in the home, so I did some YouTubing and came across the resin on cheeseboards, tables and various homewares. This is where my love for creating resin homewares began.”

Creating one-of-a-kind custom pieces including eye-catching artworks, cheeseboards, serving platters, side tables and even a lazySusan or two, Sheridan’s products certainly make a striking addition to any home. While not always the easiest medium to work with, Sheridan said she gets a lot of satisfaction out of creating something unexpected and is always looking for new applications for her art. “Resin is an unpredictable medium that doesn’t always do as you would like it to,” she said. “It is also very sticky and hard to remove if you get it in the wrong place. But at the same time can give you some beautiful and unusual pieces. “I love finding and blending new colours. I love the way you can overlap different colours and the chemical reaction between the different colours, which creates a 3D effect and beautiful pieces of lacing. “I don’t think I have a favourite piece as such, but I do love all the green and blue tones together. I also love creating the river tables.” Sheridan has been selling her amazing resin homewares at the Handmade in the Hunter Markets for the past 12 months. Check out her latest creations at upcoming markets, which will be held at Kevin Sobels Wines from 9am to 3pm on August 15, 22 and 29, and September 12. NATURE'S EYEWITNESS At Morpeth Gallery WORDS DI VON ESSEN

From the paintbrush of James Hough, Australia's finest wildlife artist, comes an extraordinary exhibition at Morpeth Gallery this month – and it's sure to be one that shouldn't be missed.

Cockatoo Cohorts

Held over two weeks from Thursday, 20 August until Sunday 23 August and then again from Thursday 27 August until Sunday 30 August (10am until 5pm each day), this will be the first-ever solo exhibition of James Hough works. With the artist in residence during his eight-day exhibition, painting and chatting to visitors, this is also your opportunity to see a master of art at work. “I have been at this art career now professionally for seventeen years, and in my sixtieth birth year, I have decided to celebrate what I like doing most with this my first solo exhibition." On show and for sale will be 55 paintings (large and small), ranging in price from $1,200 to $15,000," said James. James said that the body of work he had reserved for this exhibition was quite substantial and consisted of many paintings that he felt

particularly proud of, including those produced when Aussie Ark Tasmanian Devil Sanctuary provided exclusive access to wildlife for referencing. “This close interaction with many endangered species has helped to further open my eyes to the importance of the conservation effort needed for the future,” said James. “Every single part of each painting in the exhibition, from each leaf to every old post, limb and wildlife species has been referenced by me. Reference trips in the 4WD seeking out all those meandering “out the back” gravel roads and bushland reserves on the hunt for unique and authentic props and countless hours spent waiting and watching for wildlife are all part of the process.” F

James added that every now and then, opportunities had presented themselves to him that were both exciting and rewarding. “During 2019, Australian Geographic invited me to submit images for the production of the 2020 Art Calendar. Australian Geographic again invited me to produce thirteen images for the 2021 Art Calendar, and all of these original paintings will form part of this show,” he said. “The past few years have brought considerable international recognition, giving my art more credibility, not only internationally but also here at home. I am a signature member of Artists for Conservation the world’s leading wildlife artists group dedicated to supporting the environment and have been awarded a number of their highest awards including Best in Show and Medals of Excellence. I have been a finalist in the International Artists Magazine Wildlife Art Challenge and had my artwork published in many other forms.

at Ivanhoe Wines WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN PHOTOS BY DOMINIC LONERAGAN

yhv 12 | AUG–SEPT 2020

As the fifth generation of one of Australia’s oldest winemaking families, Stephen Drayton virtually has wine running through his veins. But it is the fertile volcanic soil running through the steep slopes of his 80-acre Pokolbin property that has really helped Stephen make a name for himself in the Hunter wine industry. Stephen and his wife Tracy are the passionate team behind the family-owned and operated Ivanhoe Wines, a boutique estate located on the corner of Oakey Creek and Marrowbone roads in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine region.

The vineyard is known for producing “big gutsy reds”, a reputation that Tracy said has its foundations in the nutrient-dense volcanic soils on the slopes of Mt Bright where the vineyard’s red grape varieties are grown. Further down the slope, the soil is made up of a sandy loam, which is ideal for producing excellent whites. “Ivanhoe Estate has been an established vineyard since the 1850s and was replanted in the late 1950s,” Tracy said. “Previously part of the Drayton’s (Family Wines) red vineyard, the fruit from Ivanhoe is renowned for its quality. “The Ivanhoe property is located on a steep slope of an old volcano (Mount Bright). The rich red volcanic soil, which is only found in a few places throughout the Hunter Valley, is ideal for growing our red

varieties, whilst the flatter blocks of vineyard on the sandy alluvial soils are better suited to our white varieties. “Ivanhoe is more famous for our reds and the sign ‘Big Gutsy Reds’ on the corners of the property do entice many travellers to visit us. “We have a wide range of red wines, from soft and fruity with a hint of cherry, to a medium-bodied Hunter Shiraz, to our big rich and full reds, the Shiraz Pressings and Premium Reserve Dark Horse. “Depending on the time of day, we have a red to suit all occasions.” Of course, there’s much more to producing quality wine than just where the vines are planted, with the couple’s long association with the industry another crucial element of their success. Stephen is a fifth-generation vigneron, whose family have been established in the Hunter Valley since the 1850’s. Tracy started working in the wine industry in 1988 and met Stephen when they were both representing a wine company at a Hunter Valley Wine Festival in 1992. After Stephen’s parents, retired winemaker Reg and his wife Pam, were tragically killed in the infamous Sea View Air Crash on their way from Williamtown to Lord Howe Island in 1996, the couple took over the property and vineyard, started a new company from scratch and built the warehouse and later the cellar door. In the process they created a new brand and wine label which they named Ivanhoe Wines after the Estate. While Stephen and Tracy have brought the historic Ivanhoe vineyard to life with their own style and passion, Stephen also remains true to his father’s viticultural legacy. “Stephen has carried on the philosophy of his father Reg, who was the winemaker at Drayton’s for over 30 years,” Tracy said. “Reg always said that the vigneron is a ‘guardian of the grape’. Most of the hard work in creating a great wine is done in the vineyard, producing quality fruit and then with the patience and knowledge of the winemaker. “Stephen’s decision-making as the vigneron includes when and how to harvest our grapes. He delays the harvesting of the fruit to achieve optimal levels of ripeness and as a result, showcase bigger, bolder flavours in the wine. (Continued next page) F

(Continued) “Ivanhoe Estate is 80 acres in total, with approximately 60 acres under vine. Many of the vines are over 60 years old, and while they are low yielding in the volume of fruit, the quality is exceptional and is one of the secrets of Ivanhoe’s success. “We currently grow Semillon, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Chambourcin, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

“The decision for which grapes were planted where was highly considered to ensure the best possible flavour, colour and quality of the fruit. We do grow grapes that are well suited to the soils and climate, and Semillon and Shiraz are prime examples of these.” “We strive to produce wines that are a great example of the variety. Our favourite is the Shiraz Pressings – we believe it is a fine example of a well-made Hunter Valley red.” Those keen to taste Ivanhoe’s renowned reds – and whites – for themselves won’t be able to track one down in their nearest bottle shop, with the wines only available onsite or online. While you can get the wines delivered directly to your door via Australia Post, there’s nothing quite like a visit to one of the most picturesque and photographed properties in the Hunter Valley. “Another of the benefits of a property being nestled on the side of the hill at the base of the Brokenback Mountain Range is the view!” Tracy said. “The wide verandahs offer spectacular views of the vineyard and mountain range. Every season has a different view to offer, from budburst with the hope of the new season and glow of the green of new

yhv 14 | AUG–SEPT 2020

buds, to summer, which is very green and the vines are laden with fruit. Then there are the autumnal colours as the vines enter the dormant stage of the yearly cycle, and of course, winter when we take the opportunity to hand prune each and every vine.” Tracy said Ivanhoe featured a mixture of old and new elements, which seamlessly blend with the picturesque environment to create an unforgettable experience. “Back in the 1850s, Ivanhoe had a winery with many open-air concrete vats, which are still standing. Meanwhile, our cellar door was modelled on the Ivanhoe Homestead, which burnt down in the bushfires during 1968,” she said. “Today, Ivanhoe also has a magnificent ‘Hand’ sculpture made of stainless steel chain created by artist Mike Van Dam at the front of the cellar door. The hands represent Stephen and Tracy’s partnership, as well as camaraderie, while the silver steel and chain also enhance our branding with the theme of Knights and the Round Table. “We also have a custom-made grapevine sculpture by Rene Rasmussen from Cosy Iron Design. It is a beautiful spot for romance, and we have had a proposal or two here over the years.” For those who do make the trip out to Pokolbin, they will be rewarded with a wine tasting to remember. For both Stephen and Tracy, customer service is a key focus, which is why you will always see one or the other at the cellar door talking to visitors as they sample from the range of Ivanhoe wines. “At Ivanhoe, we aim to provide an enjoyable wine experience rather than a tasting,” Tracy said. “All of our tastings are seated with a maximum of four guests, which adds to the personal service, and our team are passionate and knowledgeable about wine. “We also offer a Wine Masterclass for those wanting a little more structure and education in a fun way, and this is served with a gourmet cheese platter with many locally-sourced ingredients.” F

Your always welcome at...

While the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated a few changes to the experience at the moment, Tracy said they are committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of both visitors and staff. Having reopened after a nine-week closure, tastings are available from 10am to 5pm seven days a week, with bookings essential. “Ivanhoe was closed for nine weeks during the COVID-19 lockdown. Since reopening on June 1st our tastings have been a little different as we comply with the new restrictions that are in place,” Tracy said. “The number of guests we can accommodate in the building is substantially restricted to comply with social distancing. This is a significant decrease in our usual seating capacity. “Reservations are now essential, and we advise you to book as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment.

“We are trying our best to adapt and provide our guests with a memorable Ivanhoe experience in these unprecedented and uncertain times. “We ensure that all guests register at the entry and sanitise their hands. We have a COVID Hygiene Marshall who oversees the cleaning of each table, chairs, glassware and water bottle and re-sets the table for the next guests who are booked in.” Despite the uncertainty that COVID-19 has created for everyone, and especially those within the hospitality industry, Tracy said they were looking forward positively to what the future may hold. “We are very excited about the future for Ivanhoe,” she said. “We look forward to continuing to grow our membership base with more members events, adding more sculptures to the grounds as well as the introduction of exciting new events pending the relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions. “We’ll keep you posted on Ivanhoe Wines’ Facebook and Instagram pages, so stay tuned for more details!” P

BACK TO THE FUTURE At Pokolbin Estate WORDS DI VON ESSEN

With a historic stone cottage cellar door dating back to 1889, a freakish competition record and a reputation for producing outstanding wines Pokolbin Estate has long been a ‘must-do’ on many a visitors list. The Hunter’s only vineyard growing a dry Riesling, the estate also boasts one of the largest speciality food outlets in the region. Pokolbin Estate has certainly bagged more than its fair share of award-winners over the years – especially for their Riesling, Semillon and Shiraz varieties. But guests to the cellar door can also enjoy a unique and unforgettable wine tasting experience as they are introduced to wine varieties they may have never tried before – such as the Mediterranean varieties of Tempranillo or the Italian varieties that include Nebbiolo and Sangiovese, which are grown on their Belebula Vineyard. Much like all hospitality venues, Pokolbin Estate initially struggled to navigate around the new way of life and operations that resulted from the ongoing Covid-19 situation. “After the fire that devastated Pokolbin Estate 9 years ago, we had finally bounced back to our former success by 2016,” said Cellar Door Manager, Mitchell Nunn.

“Unfortunately, the past three years have not been as we would have liked. A prolonged drought followed by the horrific fires in December and January this year, and now COVID-19 has been an enormous strain on not just us, but the industry as a whole.” Like much of the Hunter Valley, Pokolbin Estate Vineyard was forced to close its doors for 10 weeks of lockdown. But during this closure, Mitchell says that loyal customers took to supporting the vineyard with online shopping for their wines and gourmet produce, and this support was the impetus they needed to keep going until they could reopen.

“Since reopening, and with the subsequent closure of the QLD and VIC borders, the Hunter Valley has been flourishing with local tourism from within NSW,” said Mitchell. “New customers, friends and working relationships have all presented great opportunities to assist us in re-establishing ourselves as a Hunter Valley must-do.” As we navigate the forever changing guidelines, the team at Pokolbin Estate are continually working around the clock to ensure they can offer the excellent service and world-class wines that long-term wine-club members and new customers have come to love. Still one of Australia’s most awarded boutique vineyards, Pokolbin Estate has withdrawn from state and national wine competitions over the past six months to refocus on rebranding themselves as not just an award-winning winery, but a family-friendly one as well. Towards the end of 2020, they will be showcasing their wines at this year's Hunter Valley Boutique wine awards. “Fingers crossed we will take out the Hunter Valley’s best open vintage red for the third year in a row,” added Mitchell. Winning Streak Continues For Tamburlaine WORDS DI VON ESSEN Tamburlaine Organic Wines has recently taken out a Gold, two Silvers and a Bronze at the 2020 London Wine Competition. “Wines are rated with three main criteria in mind – quality, value and package. To be a medal winner, wines must show overall rating in all three factors,” Mark explained. “This year’s competition saw close to 1000 entries from more than 43 countries, so we were exceptionally pleased to come away with a Gold medal for our 2018 Marlowe - Act One, two Silver medals for Point 65 Arneis and point 65 Viognier, and a Bronze for the 2018 Orange Reserve Malbec.” The 3rd Edition of the London Wine Competition took place in London earlier this month. There were 198 wines from Australia, 126 from Italy, 124 from France, and 101 from Spain – making up the top four countries that entered. Organised by Beverage Trade Network, the London Wine Competition is one of the leading wine competitions of its kind. Attaining a medal at the event is considered the ultimate seal of approval in the global wine industry. “We are particularly pleased with the ongoing success of our first super-premium red blend, 2018 Marlowe - Act One. A Shiraz/Cab blend from Orange, the wine also came away with trophies at the 2019 Royal Melbourne Wine Show (Best Young Blended Red) and the 2019 National Highlands Wine show. 2018 Marlowe – Act One will be released in the next 12 months exclusively to Reserve Members.” “Excellent fruit from a fine vintage combined with the careful use of new French oak has demonstrated just how well reds from mature Orange region vineyards can perform on the National and International stage alike.” “Not only does the London Wine Competition celebrate quality, where winemaking ability and technical expertise receive peer, buyer and sommelier accreditation, the judges also award points and medals for both value and packaging,” said Mark. The judging panel consisted of Masters of Wine, many senior Sommeliers from some of London’s most accredited restaurants, buyers and traders with extensive commercial buying responsibility.

AUSTRALIAN ALPACA BARN

“Australia is competing exceptionally well on the world stage. The competition was steep, and the quality was outstanding,” said Mark. The awards come on the back of a swag of awards won at the recent 2020 Organic and Biodynamic Wine Show where Tamburlaine took out 18 awards from the 19 wines entered. “The wine show wins consolidate our belief that we are still getting it right and creating exceptional drinking experiences for our loyal customers. We have remained true to the core of what we do, and we consistently do it well,” said Tamburlaine Group Senior Winemaker, Aaron Mercer. Tamburlaine’s long-term commitment to retaining a winemaking philosophy around ‘Contemporary Organic Practices’ in the vineyard and the winery is central to their ongoing success, according to Aaron (who was also awarded the Hunter Valley Rising Star accolade himself in 2018). He puts the recent awards down to the consistent quality of the wines that are being produced by Tamburlaine along with the exceptionally talented staff. “It’s a great time to be making organic wine,” said Aaron. “The industry is growing and developing immensely. It is significant to be at the forefront of such a dynamic sector and creating award-winning bottles for Australia’s largest producer of organic wines. “I would like to congratulate and thank the dedicated Tamburlaine staff for their hard work and dedication. These awards belong to everyone. Well done!” To purchase Tamburlaine wines online visit www.tamburlaine.com.au or pop into the Hunter Valley Cellar Door at 358 McDonalds Road, Pokolbin – it’s open seven days a week from 9am until 5pm daily. OF THE WORDS Quentin von Essen

Australia's red grapes are amongst its greatest assets – after all, who could imagine a world without classic Australian Shiraz? In general, the warmer the wine region, the more likely it will produce rich, full-flavoured styles which many people come to associate with Australian red wine. The world's classic premium red grape varieties are all found in abundance in the Hunter Valley where some of the oldest vines and most prominent names in Australian wine can be found. Here, the deep friable loam and red duplex soils of the Hunter Valley produce superb examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and the Mediterranean varieties that include Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Barbera and Nebbiolo, to mention just a few. Whatever you're looking for, the Hunter Valley provides a diversity of red wines just perfect for those looking for something different.

Shiraz – Australia's favourite red variety

Shiraz is the Hunter's premium red variety and is tremendously flexible in its ability to adapt to virtually any combination of climate and soil. The Shiraz grape is said to originate from the Rhone wine-growing area of France but is now grown throughout the world and used primarily to produce powerful red wines which can be both varietal or blended. The typical young Hunter Valley Shiraz is a medium-bodied wine showing red and dark berries, spices and a great deal of tannin. However, its real character is seen in wines with longevity. With age, the wines become a far more complex, fullbodied, yet smooth and richly flavoured wine with some earthy tones. F

Cabernet Sauvignon – The most recognized red grape variety

Cabernet Sauvignon is the world's most loved red wine and is renowned for its ability to age for decades at a time. This classic red variety of Bordeaux is second only to Shiraz in importance in Australia. Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be medium to full-bodied, typically leafy with ripe cassis like flavours, well-structured and elegant and powerfully aromatic. The bouquet can be rich with fruity notes of black cherries and currants, herby notes of peppers and olives and spicy notes of ginger. Typically, this wine features naturally high levels of tannin, but barrel ageing allows for slow oxidation to reduce these levels and infuses the wine with its flavours.

Pinot Noir – The most romantic of wines

Described as "the most romantic of wines'' due to its sensuous and gratifying perfume, and considered by many to be the next “wine fashion, Pinot Noir tends to be light to medium in body with a broad range of textures and flavours, including a variety of complex aromas reminiscent of black or red cherry, raspberry, currant and blackberry. With its origins in France, the Pinot Noir grape is a light-skinned, aromatic grape and one of the oldest grape varieties to be cultivated for the purpose of making wine. While widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, it is also highly reflective of its terroir (more so than other black grape varieties), with different wine growing regions often producing very different wines which makes vineyard site selection an important factor.

Merlot – The most pleasurable wine experience

In Australia Merlot is considered to be one of the most important red grape varieties - coming in 3rd after Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Originating from Bordeaux in France, Merlot is renowned for its wonderfully fruity, well rounded, even fleshy character and is grown in just about every wine growing region of Australia. The summer heat of the Hunter is considered to provide the ideal growing conditions for this versatile grape variety. In recent years, Hunter Valley Merlot has experienced a surge in popularity with a vibrant bouquet providing one of the most pleasurable wine experiences.

Tempranillo Wine – The one to watch

Tempranillo (from the Spanish Temprano, meaning early) is a premium grape variety originating in the Rioja region of Spain where it is often blended with varieties such as Graciano, Grenache and to a lesser extent Cabernet Sauvignon. Tempranillo wine is now being made in many wine regions throughout Australia – including the Hunter Valley. It is said to be challenging Sangiovese as the up and coming red wine varietal in Australia. What makes this variety so exciting is that it is an easy-drinking, medium to full-bodied wine with lower acidity and full fruit flavour that matches well with a wide range of foods. The wine itself, is ruby red in colour, while the aroma and flavours can have characteristic of plum, cherry, strawberry and herb mixed with an earthiness. Continued next page F

Petit Verdot – A most majestic wine

Originally from the Bordeaux region of France, the bold-yet-floral expression of Petit Verdot is something that all red wine enthusiasts should have the opportunity to try. In Australia Petit Verdot is being planted in warmer climates such as the Hunter Valley where it produces full-bodied wines with concentrated flavours and integrated tannins. Here ripening on the vine is not such a problem and while still used in blends, it is increasingly bottled as a single varietal stand-alone wine As a stand-alone varietal, it produces deep, intense coloured wines with violet aromas, firm tannins and rich, vibrant flavours of blueberry making it an excellent choice for true red wine drinkers.

Chambourcin – Unique in so many ways

Chambourcin is a relatively new purple-skinned French – American hybrid grape that produces deep-coloured, light to medium-bodied wines with a full aromatic flavour, and no unpleasant hybrid flavours. It can be made into a dry style or one with a moderate residual sugar level, giving it a pleasant sweetness. Because this variety is especially resistant to fungal diseases, Chambourcin is a variety that flourishes in the Hunter Valley climate. It is also most at home in the more humid regions of Coastal NSW and Queensland which all experience wet summers. Chambourcin wines have a lovely, deep red colour. Most are big and fruity with a lot of raspberries, plums, prunes and even cranberries on the palate. It is not as heavy or robust as Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon, which can make it quite attractive to people who generally don't like red wine. Chambourcin wines also respond well to being oaked, a treatment which can produce vanilla or mocha flavours in the wine.

Sangiovese – The pride of Tuscany

Sangiovese is the most-planted red grape in Italy and is the most important grape variety used in the production of Tuscany's greatest red wines. This star amongst Italian wine grape varieties is now making its mark in Australia where it has a reputation for being adaptable to many types of vineyard soils and as such is considered suitable for cultivation in a number of Australian wine regions – such as the Hunter Valley where it is fast gaining popularity, although vineyard area remains small. The variety produces elegant medium-bodied wines with powerful aromas and with moderate to high natural acidity. The characteristic flavours are cherries, tomatoes, herbs, spices and tea-like flavours. P

Raise Your Spirits At Hunter Distillery! WORDS CLAIRE BRADSHAW

Lemon myrtle vodka. Turkish delight liqueur. Magical, colour-changing gin. These aren’t the kinds of spirits you’ll find at your everyday bottle shop – but you will find them (and plenty more) at a little place called Hunter Distillery. For those who like to branch out with their evening tipple, or who are keen to try their hand at making exciting cocktails at home (inspired by recent home isolation!), Hunter Distillery is a dream destination. Since opening to the public in 2012, the Distillery has expanded in size, scope and offering. The original Valli Vodkas paved the way for the premium organic vodka range the Distillery is now renowned for, and various gins, liqueurs and schnapps have been added to the mix. “It’s grown dramatically,” says Neil Langdon, Hunter Distillery’s Sales and Customer Relations Manager. “It’s gone from just the five vodkas to now five gins, about ten vodkas, about 15 liqueurs and schnapps, and some other specialty spirits. We started off with just one tasting bar; we’re now up to two very big public tasting bars and two group-booking tasting bars. And we’re still growing.” For anyone looking to break up a wine tour with something a little different, the Distillery’s tasting bars are an essential stop. Not only will you sample a selection from the wide range of premium and flavoured spirits, but you’ll also get a sneak peek at the inner workings of the Distillery. “The tasting area is in the same building as the production area, so you can actually see the stills and the bottling line and everything from the tasting area,” Neil explains.

From the moment you walk in for a $5 tasting experience, you’ll understand the Distillery’s unique appeal. The list of spirits available is extensive and often unusual (did someone say chilli schnapps? Caramel vodka? Choc-mint liqueur?). And when you finally decide what you’d like to try, your samples are offered not in glasses, but in test tubes. “It’s a unique thing that we do for a couple of reasons,” says Neil. “It’s a point of difference, but the main reason is that it is straight spirits, so this way you get to try a couple of flavours, and we stay in RSA guidelines!” The test-tube tasting experience isn’t the only thing that makes the venue distinctive. It’s also the only 100% organic distillery in the Hunter, and its processes are different from those of many other distilleries. “We make our own spirit,” Neil explains. “A lot of distilleries buy in the spirit and then make their products from that, but we actually make ours from scratch. We do the equivalent of five times distilling, so we’re able to remove a lot more of the nasty alcohols – there’s basically none of that burn that goes all the way down. It’s a very clean, polished spirit.” From the basic spirit, premium vodkas are made first, creating a smooth and clean product that’s continued to garner awards over the years. This is followed by the unique flavoured products, which are created using an infusion process with essential oils and flavour F

extractions. Flavour creation is a balance of art and science – a new challenge for the Distillery team each time as they experiment with different materials and techniques. Some flavours are virtually an instant success, only needing minor tweaking after the first attempt; but, Neil reveals, “there are others which might be in the development stage off and on for 18 months to two years or more. We like to make sure that you’ve got a beautiful smell, fantastic taste and a great aftertaste.” So what’s popular at the Distillery these days? Bestsellers like the Valli Vodka range and fruity or sweet liqueurs are always a hit, but gin is also currently having its moment for Hunter drinkers – particularly the enigmatically named ‘Mystery Gin’. Boasting an unusual vibrant-blue colour, Hunter Distillery’s Mystery Gin has a surprise twist in store when mixed with its best friend, tonic. “It uses a flower called the butterfly pea for its colour, which actually reacts with the citric acid in tonic water – so it will change colour and become more of a pink,” Neil explains. He points out that it’s unique in the flavour department as well, with a distinct sweetness and blood-orange overtone that endears it to gin fans and non-gin-drinkers alike. A recent sideline for the team at Hunter Distillery is, of course, their exclusive Hand Sanitiser. Containing 10% Glycerine, 70% Alcohol and fresh aloe vera QS, the product is available in-store or online in 500ml bottles.

Hunter Distillery’s range of boutique products is only available online or at the Distillery itself. But if you find you just can’t get enough, you can also join the Spirit Club and receive a 15% discount on all purchases, including two six-packs of 500mL bottles delivered in May and November each year. You’ll also have exclusive first access to new products, and possibly even special events such as members’ nights down the track… Bottoms up, we say. Shop online at www.hunterdistillery.com.au or pop in for a test-tube tasting at 1686 Broke Road, Pokolbin. Passionate Volunteers

Celebrate Hunter's Rich Rail History WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN

Are you looking for a day-trip destination with plenty of space for social distancing? Then head out to Richmond Vale Railway Museum, where education and entertainment combine for a fun day out for the whole family.

Run entirely by a band of passionate volunteers who have worked to preserve and celebrate the Hunter’s rich railway and mining heritage and the legacy of the J. & A. Brown Company for more than four decades; the site offers a mix of historical artefacts, miniature train rides, outdoor mining and rail exhibits, as well as a souvenir shop and canteen. The biggest drawcard, of course, is the chance to take a ride behind its restored steam or diesel locomotives. Richmond Vale Railway Museum secretary Tracey Hamilton said the facility, which is located on the site of the old Richmond Main colliery at Richmond Vale, around 4km south of Kurri Kurri, was an intergenerational activity that can be enjoyed by all. “Grandparents bring their grandchildren out to show them what it was like to ride a train when they were young. It generates a lot of conversations between the different age groups and gets the kids away from their electronics for a while,” she said. “We use the old-style cardboard tickets, which generates a lot of comments. They bring back many memories for the older visitors. “It is important to remember how the mining and railway industries began. Visitors can see a lot of this history at our site.” Richmond Vale Railway Museum was closed for three months earlier this year as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, forcing the cancellation of some of the major fundraisers required to keep the gates of the volunteer-run facility open.

But with restrictions easing and appropriate safety and hygiene processes in place, including train ride capacity limits, the reopened site is back on track with plans to hold two of its popular annual events in coming months. “We plan to run our annual Family Fun Fest on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September,” Tracey said. “There will be extra displays and attractions, but this will depend on what happens with COVID-19. There will be a model train layout that children and adults can operate for a donation. “We will also have our annual Santa Special on Sunday 16th November. Children will not be able to sit on Santa’s knee as usual, but they can say hello and get a goody bag each. “Outside of these events, visitors can still ride behind Marjorie, the steam engine on the short Mulbring Road branch line. “We have a mini-train for big and little kids; there is a display of railway memorabilia in the Entry Building, and the Mining Museum houses many artefacts from the early days of mining. There is also an audio-visual display with stories about early mining and transport. “Visitors can also get up close and personal with the ROD locomotive, which was used by Australian steam drivers and carried Australian soldiers in France during World War One. “Richmond Vale Railway Museum is a place where people of all ages can have a fun day out.” Richmond Vale Railway Museum is open on the first three Sundays of each month, and school holiday Sundays from 9.30am.
