Huntlee Tavern A destination pub at the gateway to Hunter Valley Wine Country, close to several growing regional towns and with the new 7,500-home Huntlee township on its doorstep, it's that centrality, in addition to the bustling city of Newcastle, that has seen Huntlee Tavern become somewhat of a 'hub-pub' – the Hub of the Hunter to surrounding regional towns too. But you don’t have to be a local to enjoy the vibe! One look at the menu screams "gastropub on steroids", with the world-famous Huntlee Sticky BBQ Pork Ribs front and centre for diners. Not only delicious (think tender ribs cooked to perfection), weighing in at 1kg, it's also guaranteed to conquer your hunger (especially when washed down with one of the 14 beers on tap!). With an impressive lineup of live entertainment every week, it’s the perfect destination for winding down after a day in Wine Country. Visit www. huntleetavern.com.au for upcoming live entertainment or more information.
Handmade in the Hunter Markets The mission of these charming country markets is to showcase a variety of makers and creators of the greater Hunter area – and they do precisely that! Here you’ll find an incredible range of products made by local artisans with unique skills who work tirelessly on their designs. For more than 12 years, these markets have been a firm favourite for locals and visitors. No two stalls are the same, providing visitors with an array of unique goods from a community of diverse locals and an excellent reason to keep coming back! And don't forget about picking up some wine or picnic supplies on your way out, too; you’ll find everything within the rose-lined gardens of Sobels Wines. The markets run from 9am until 2pm. Upcoming markets are Saturdays 17 + 24 February and Saturdays 2 + 9 + 16 March. There is plenty of parking, furry friends (on leash) are welcome, and all stallholders offer EFTPOS facilities. The Garden Cellars The wait is over! Dead Man's Fingers Spiced Rum has finally returned to the shelves at The Garden Cellars! Unsurprisingly, with a name like Dead Mans's Fingers, this fusion of blended rum and exotic spices gives birth to a flavour profile that's unparalleled and unforgettable. For those acquainted with the delectable essence of Saffron cake, a reminiscent note dances gracefully alongside hints of Pedro Ximénez ice cream. Then, a gentle whisper of creamy caramel emerges, paving the way for a symphony of vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg, accompanied by the subtle sweetness of orange undertones. Amidst this flavourful journey, some enthusiasts have claimed to detect nuances of pineapple, dried raisins, and a subtle hint of black pepper—but we suspect they might just be flaunting their refined palates. While in-store, you should also pick up a bottle of Dead Man’s Fingers Reposado Tequila, which has also returned to the shelves. There is a very limited stock of both, so visit the store soon to get your hands on these treasures at Shop 21, Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village.

Celebrating 20 years of the Hunter’s hidden gem A LITTLE BIT OF BROKE
WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER IMAGE SOURCE A LITTLE BIT OF BROKE For the past 20 years, visitors to the Broke Fordwich sub-region of the Hunter Valley have been enjoying the hospitality and ‘la dolce vita’ of the area’s winemakers and food producers in a festival that began as A Little Bit of Italy in Broke and has since become simply, A Little Bit of Broke. It’s a wine trail that is less travelled with more than a dozen cellar doors and offers the opportunity to explore the wine, food and fabulousness of this vibrant and thriving area, which is also an emerging artisan food destination with olive groves, farm gate producers and acclaimed dining that deserves to be appreciated and savoured. The small colonial township of Broke is celebrating its bicentenary year this year. Located on the original and historic trail from Sydney heading north, it’s a growing township with a strong community. Surrounded by national and state parks, rivers and an ever-growing collection of vineyards, it is known for its stunning natural beauty and peaceful rural setting. It’s an ancient land, home to the First Nations people, the Wonnarua, for 30,000 years, and before that, 230 million years ago, it was a large sea. Its unique topography with rich soils attracted the original winemakers of the colony in the 1830s, and today, it is Australia’s oldest continuous wine region. “The festival began as an Italian-themed weekend to celebrate the fact that the region had several Italian grape varieties planted which was quite pioneering for the Hunter Region which usually focuses on

the iconic and traditional varieties of Semillon and Shiraz,” said Lisa Margan, Director of Margan Wines. “It was small and humble and a celebration of Italian culture – an opportunity to invite people to a different sub-region of the Hunter and enjoy all the things that make our area unique. “A couple of years ago, as our wine industry grew, we really began to look at our wine tourism. The success we’ve had at Margan, as a multiaward-winning winery and a hatted restaurant, and the redevelopment of Winmark Wines (formerly Pooles Rock) under Karin Adcock, are just two examples of the many guest-facing businesses in the area with a wine tourism focus.” Karin Adcock, owner and vigneron of Winmark Wines and President of the Broke Fordwich Wine and Tourism Association, took over the winery in 2016 and brings incredible energy and a multi-award-winning business acumen to everything she does. She has restored the vineyard, transformed the accommodation and developed an art gallery and sculpture walk that creates a place for visitors to connect with wine, art and nature. “The shift away from an Italian focus for the festival was to connect it more authentically with what’s on offer here all year round,” said Karin. “It’s not just one weekend. It’s a showcase weekend that we hope will encourage visitors to return outside of the festival experience. And whilst we do, as an area, grow Italian varieties like Barbera, Alberino and Fiano, we also grow the iconic Hunter Valley flagship wines of Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay. “Our wines are all estate grown and estate made – boutique, unique, with high integrity and quality. The wine-tasting experience here is less

hectic than in other areas of the Hunter, too. We’re less commercialised, and our surroundings are bucolic. In addition, we now have a large array of additional businesses that attract tourism – olive groves, alpacas, restaurants, cafes, retail, and now, a lavender farm! In terms of accommodation, we’ve got at least 600 beds in a wide choice of styles to suit different budgets. We think there’s something for everyone to enjoy here.” “Last year’s event was incredibly successful with over 2000 visitors,” said Lisa. “And this year, there’s been an increase in the number of businesses participating in what is a roving festival – a choose your own adventure experience. “We’ve also changed the dates to earlier in the year. Previously, it was held in April/May, but we’ve shifted it to take advantage of the beautiful Autumn weather. It’s also the tail end of the harvest season and the olive harvest season. This means there is more for visitors to see and do, with some wines still in fermentation, for example. And if it rains, it doesn’t matter. Every venue has a sheltered option, so the rain won’t stop it.” There are 16 fabulous locations participating in this multi-venue festival, many with several great events for visitors to immerse themselves in.
It’s not just one weekend. It’s a showcase weekend that we hope will encourage visitors to return outside of the festival experience. Think dining in a hatted restaurant, picnicking with alpacas, sunset wines and tunes, exploring the largest organic kitchen garden in the region, learning the art of beekeeping or trying your hand at art ‘n sip, indulging in a foot scrub made using local botanicals. Or just sitting back and taking in the spectacular scenery, overlooking some of the region’s most pristine vineyards, glass in hand. To take part in the A Little Bit of Broke festival, you simply purchase a Festival Kit online, which includes festival entry, a keepsake Riedel tasting glass and either four tasting tokens ($35) or eight ($50) that can be redeemed for a tasting at your choice of cellar doors plus a map and program that you pick up at the village hub when you arrive for your visit – either for the day or the weekend. You can add on dining, experiences, events, workshops, extra tastings and even shuttle bus transport ($25pp for one day or $40pp for two days) to make things easy and to round out your weekend. Kids enter for free as they do not require a Festival Kit, which is for over 18 years only. All 16 venues are listed here with a short description of just some of the offerings, some of which require add-on bookings. For the complete list, visit the website www.brokefordwich.com.au.

Try a one-hour guided tour of the vineyard, kitchen garden and winery, including a flight of five premium wines. And don’t miss the Dining Under the Stars event on the Friday evening. Whispering Brook teaches the secrets of artisan winemaking and olive oil production while enjoying unique Portuguese-inspired wines and sensational local artisan chocolates. Hunter Lavender Farm grows, distils and processes lavender using traditional methods and ecologically sustainable practices to deliver premium quality, all-natural lavender products. The Gum Ball Music & Arts Festival 2024 We’re pretty fortunate in the Hunter Valley to have some great events, but one of the most treasured has to be The Gum Ball. Now celebrating its 19th chapter, the weekend-long cultural escape has built an enviable reputation across Australia (and the world) for its grassroots evolution into a supreme boutique family-friendly offering tucked away at Dashville, the 100-acre bushland venue and campground at Lower Belford. Held over the last weekend of the April school holidays and running Thursday 25 April to Sunday 28 April 2024, even after so many years, it’s hard to believe that the festival is still considered somewhat a hidden gem in its local area, yet boasts an enviable reputation as one of the best laid-back festivals in existence across the world. In 2024, the festival reminds us again as to why, with a wellconsidered and diverse lineup full of discovery and intrigue. Featuring 36 artists, from across Australia and overseas, a mix of both emerging and well-established artists who are destined to impress as they all play oneby-one on the intimate bushland amphitheatre. The natural bushland space of Dashville makes for an incredible home away from home, and The Gum Ball is their flagship event of the year. It’s a comfortable and inclusive festival experience, connecting music

lovers from all walks and ages of life. One big central stage presents a three-day musical journey as artists perform one by one amongst the big tall gum trees that wrap across the idyllic arena space. Expect an incredible journey of live music alongside live art, comedy, pro skateboarding, markets, workshops, camping and more. While it is typically a camping festival, there is also an option for single-day tickets and accessible public transport. Organisers encourage those requiring special assistance to reach out to the venue if they’d like a site inspection prior to the event, as the venue endeavours to be an accessible venue for the public. Parents listen up as the festival also has a pretty impressive Youth Mentorship opportunity for budding young teenagers interested in music! It’s known as The Young Gums Youth Mentorship, and applications are now open until 20 March. The immersive project selects ten teenagers who take a five-day journey alongside music professionals in order to perform on the main stage on the final day of the festival. Hunter Distillery's Top-Shelf Triumph WORDS LIANE MORRIS Hunter Distillery, located in the heart of Hunter Valley wine country in Pokolbin, has a philosophy of using only the highest quality ingredients, coupled with traditional methods and the latest production technology, to produce an uncompromising range of top-shelf spirits. Their success as the region's first distillery has led to industry growth, even though owner Joe Slupik was told that a distillery in the heart of wine country could never work. The story of Hunter Distillery begins in Poland before the Second World War when Joe's grandfather supported his local community as a 'honey doctor'. He would distill liquor and add honey and other beneficial natural ingredients to make a tonic. He taught his daughter everything he knew. During the war, Joe's grandfather, the still and all the alcohol were taken in a raid. After the war, Joe's mother migrated to Australia, finding herself in the Greta Migrant Camp. Joe was always fascinated by his mother's stories about the distilling process and its importance in family legends. Joe grew up in Branxton and ran Maitland Fabrications, working across the region on new builds and maintenance, often within the wine industry. It wasn't until his mother passed that Joe thought about the family history of distilling. "It was at Mum's funeral when I was giving the eulogy and sharing the family stories about distilling in Poland that the idea took hold," said Joe. "People approached me after the funeral and suggested I start a distillery in my mother's honour. So, in 2010, I did just that. I already

had the 100 acres in Pokolbin and could certainly build the required structures. I didn't have much to lose, and I had confidence in the location. I built the Hunter Valley Cheese Factory building at the McGuigan Cellar Door and understood its ability to draw customers from Sydney." Today, the family-run business employs around fifteen people. Joe is also supported by son Colin and daughter Theresa, making the craft a fourth-generation family tradition. Hunter Distillery has won multiple international awards, including at the London Spirit Show and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and is one of the few distilleries that make its own alcohol. The spirits produced include Gin, Vodka, Liqueurs, Schnapps, Brandy and Rum. Products are blended with natural botanicals and with 100% rainwater. All of this happens on-site at Hunter Distillery Pokolbin. "We are always endeavouring to source ingredients of the highest quality, including for our Mystery Blue Gin, which is created using natural colour. We use the butterfly pea flower to create a distinctive hue, and it is one of the best sellers. Hunter Distillery's most awarded Gin, however, is the Copperwave Gin, which has developed a strong following over time," said Joe. "New exciting products are currently being developed, so watch this space!" Hunter Distillery navigated the Covid pandemic well, with the tasting experiences permanently changed as a result. Tastings are now seated but still feature the distinctive test tubes with six spirits of choice at 4ml each, which is currently only $5 per person.
With so many flavours of liqueur to choose from, there is always something new to try. Flavours include the traditional Butterscotch Schnapps, Chocolate Mint, Hazelnut and Strawberry, but also the more adventurous Chilli Schnapps, Lychee, Mango or Turkish Delight liqueurs. The Vodkas feature several flavours, including Coffee, Caramel and Lemon Myrtle, as well as the more traditional offerings of Apple and Raspberry. "Our products and tasting experiences perfectly complement the food and wine scene here in the Hunter, and we're proud to be a part of driving repeat visitation into our region," said Joe. "It's a source of great pride for me to be able to continue a longstanding family tradition from Poland to the Hunter, from our family to yours, and to be a leader in this burgeoning industry and craft." Hunter Distillery is located at 1686 Broke Road, Pokolbin and is open seven days, 10am - 5pm.

donated by most artists when you make a purchase (original, print or art gift) during the exhibition. One of the artists in residence over the weekend is the legendary Grand Master Artist John McCartin. John has mastered the art of capturing the splendour of the natural world in which we live and was judged the best in the World for landscape painting in 2023 (he has also just won another award in 2024 in Spain, taking his tally to 115 awards). The way he interprets the world that surrounds us, particularly when it comes to portraying the astounding beauty of nature, possesses an allure that cannot be denied and is intriguing. Using brushstrokes, pencil strokes, and charcoal drawings, John can transport you to ethereal worlds that appear to exist beyond the limits of your imagination. John can take you to faraway, breathtaking locales without requiring you to leave the safety and convenience of your home. It is a medium that captures the astonishing splendour of our natural world, from undulating hills and towering mountains to placid lakes, verdant woods, and thriving vistas. John’s practice of landscape painting has an entrancing quality that can stir your spirits, and John is one of those painters whose work can completely take your breath away. Once one palette has been satisfied – it’s time for the other, and gourmet food lovers can tantalise their taste buds with tastings of gourmet foods, fudge, cordial, nuts and honey at Morpeth Gourmet Foods on the ground floor of Morpeth Gallery. Exhibition paintings will be available for purchase commencing Thursday, 7 March at 10AM. The artists will be in residence for the weekend only. Entry is Free. Morpeth Gallery is open 10AM5PM, Thursdays to Sundays. For more information, visit www. morpethgallery.com.
