Welcome to 2022 and another year of life in the beautiful Hunter Valley. The new year no doubt has some (hopefully great) surprises in store for the Hunter, and we can’t wait to continue on our quest to bring you all the news about what’s new and happening each month. This year will also see us hit our 200th issue – so keep an eye out for that! The warmer months are here, and relaxation, festivities, and lots of sunshine abound. This is the time of year when lighter, brighter styles of wine come into their own. Think crisp, refreshing white wines – lighter, simpler, fruit and acid-driven dry or slightly off-dry whites, served well chilled. Is your mouth watering at the thought? How to find the best wines to enjoy over summer is simply a matter of preference, and to help you reach for the perfect bottle every time, we’ve compiled a selection of wines to take you through the season. Markets a Highlight for Coffee Crew When it comes to brewing up a satisfying cup of coffee on the go, Christine and Richard ‘are here to serve’ – literally. The Nulkaba couple are the smiling faces behind one of the Hunter's most delicious mobile barista-made coffee enterprises, Lava Coffee Hunter Valley. Christine says it has been a joy to work alongside her husband in the successful side-venture, which they complete on top of their regular fulltime jobs. "This whole coffee van idea came to me when attending industry seminars in Sydney. I’d often hear attendees saying during the seminars how much they’d love a good coffee,” she said. “I discussed this idea with my husband and thought it would be good to do something together and still have my full-time job. It took a good 18 months of looking around Sydney and our local area until I discovered a guy in Newcastle who was interested in selling his van.” After securing their first mobile coffee headquarters, the couple set about fitting it out properly, while Christine also completed her barista training, Food Authority and Food Supervisor’s courses. Since then, the couple has been popping up everywhere, from private functions, morning teas, nursing homes and celebratory events to corporate events, schools, workplaces, auctions and sporting events. For almost eight years, they have also been warming the hands and stomachs of visitors to the monthly Handmade in the Hunter artisan markets. “We started selling coffee at Handmade in the Hunter Markets when Karen approached me all those years ago. We love this market; it's been a real highlight for us to be there,” Christine said.

"We meet so many beautiful people from all over and have had so many come back on the day and tell us our coffee was excellent. This instant feedback is a great way to continue to serve great coffee and not ever become complacent with the running of the coffee van. After all, we are there to serve!” Of course, COVID put a bit of a dampener on markets and events for a while, but the couple were able to keep the business running by gaining accreditation with local government to operate a covid-safe van outside their Wine Country Drive premises – no doubt delighting locals! The slowdown also gave them almost two years to create and launch their brand new, state-of-the-art coffee trailer to the market. With ergonomic improvements to assist with preparation, and the ability for the pair to serve customers out of the elements, the new trailer was created by other local businesses and is fully fitted out with brand new equipment from their distributors. The McLeish story is more of an epic journey than a mere tale. From a very different early career outside of wine, Bob McLeish found himself in the mid-’80s immersed in viticulture and producing a Semillon that has been awarded best in the world. This family-run vineyard and cellar door in the Hunter Valley has literally won the prestigious World's Best Semillon Award 3 times, in 2012, 2013 and 2016. Established in 1985 by Robert (Bob) and Maryanne McLeish, the single-vineyard produces quality and varietal purity that has seen it awarded over 300 accolades.With over 60 Trophies, 76 Gold, 60 Silver and 80 Bronze since its inception – it’s one of the most awarded boutique wineries in Australia. Over the course of 37 years, the vineyard expanded the range to six varietals, including Semillon, Verdelho and Chardonnay along with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz whilst evolving into an undisputed international leader for Hunter Valley Semillon, a fact that we can all be proud of.

In the days when Bob McLeish played first-grade rugby union and worked as an engineer, he began courting a young woman named Maryanne who came from Newcastle and worked on Macquarie Street in a Sydney solicitor's office. Bob was spending a lot of time in Adelaide for work, and the two enjoyed a long-distance relationship with lots of travelling to and fro. Bob disliked the beer and the water in Adelaide and started drinking the wines. Together, the two developed a passion for wine that began their lifelong journey into a new career and a new way of life. When it was time to settle down, they were attracted to the quiet life of the Hunter Valley, the proximity to Maryanne's family and the opportunity to try their hand at a new hobby. They purchased a 16-hectare property on DeBeyers Road, Pokolbin and planted it out, learning as they went along from Noel Martin, a Hunter Valley-based Vineyard Manager. Bob's methodical engineering mind stood them in good stead, and despite spending many years overseas for his engineering work, the family business started to take shape, with a cellar door being established in 1995.


Any visitor to McLeish Estate will notice that there is a definite Scottish and Highland vibe to what they do. Bob's father emigrated from Kilmarnock, south of Glasgow, Scotland, when he was a boy, and settled in 'The Shire' in Sydney, raising his three boys within a solid Scottish tradition and culture which Bob has maintained to this day. A gifted piper, who plays and has taught the bagpipes, Bob can often be heard playing amongst the vines to the visiting customer's delight. Scottish traditions form the basis of many of the estate's events, with the annual highlight being the Hunter Highland Lunch. The next Hunter Highland Lunch will be held on 17 September 2022 and will be a celebration of Scottish tradition. Beginning at 11am, guests can get their feet in on the fun with Highland games, caber tossing, sparkling on arrival, as well as a mass pipe band, followed by a delicious three-course feast perfectly paired with McLeish's award-winning wines.

We'd love everyone to come and enjoy the gourmet long lunch and soak up the essence of the Scottish heritage. "Covid has kept us quiet for two years now but maintaining these historic homeland traditions is important to us, and we know that so many others look forward to it every year. We're excited to be planning one for 2022 after our 2-year absence." The Covid pandemic, as with many other hospitality venues and tourism operators, has provided the estate with the opportunity to extend their cellar door experiences through a significant renovation, opening up new spaces and allowing for several new offerings, including the new dedicated wine room where guests can enjoy an array of vintage wines and charcuterie share plates. The interior space takes inspiration

from a classic wine oak barrel with exposed brick walls and concrete floors providing a rustic, cellar door experience, while warm timber and cosy furnishings create a convivial atmosphere. Over 30 wines are featured, including the multi-award-winning World's Best Semillon and iconic aged reds. Discerning drinkers will be able to get their hands on limited back vintages as well as good value wines, with the popular McLeish Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc, Victoria Chardonnay and red blends all available. If you'd prefer the outdoors, particularly in the current covid environment, there is the beautiful seated pergola area where you'll find perfect vineyard views as you sip a refreshing, crisp Semillon. This latest expansion is the brainchild of Jessica McLeish, daughter to Bob and Maryanne, who has grown up inside the industry and is now owner and operations manager of the estate. As a toddler, she played under the vines, and as she grew older, she was put to work in the vineyard to help out wherever she could. Her first choice of career, however, was in Human Resources Management. It wasn't until a visit to Bordeaux in France when she went travelling that her eyes were opened to the possibilities of a future in the family business. She worked for two months on a biodynamic, family-run vineyard and credits that experience with her inspiration. On her return to Australia, she completed her Masters of Wine Business at the University of Adelaide and became a judge on the Australian Wine Show and International Wine Challenge judging circuit. There are at least seven different wine tasting experiences to be enjoyed at the McLeish Estate cellar door, where you are highly likely to meet the family. They consider it a point of pride to welcome guests to their clan and educate those interested in the wines they are enjoying. In addition to the cellar door experiences and the Hunter Highland Lunch, the team have also paired up with Restaurant Mason in Newcastle to present the Vintage Wine Dinner 2022 on 3 March. A team of ten at McLeish Estate makes all this magic happen under the direction of Jessica, Maryanne, and Bob. Bob and Maryanne are retiring, and Jessica is forging ahead, growing the experiences with entertainment and education and personalised tastings. She has her sights set on maintaining the consistent quality and authentic Hunter Valley varietals that the estate is known for. Binnorie Dairy Binnorie Dairy is one of Australia’s premier soft cheesemakers, and we’re privileged that their home is right here in Hunter Valley Wine Country. Trading since 2003 (most recently from their state-of-the-art cheesemaking centre, tasting room and retail store in Lovedale), Binnorie Dairy produces all of its cheeses on-site, providing complimentary tastings for visitors between 10am and 5pm, seven days a week. If you’re lucky, you might get to see the cheesemakers at work through the viewing window into the cheesemaking room. The cow's milk that goes into making all of Binnorie’s delicious cheeses comes from a range of different herds located between Scone and Cessnock and from a few different varieties too - like Jersey, Brown Swiss and Friesian. There is also a range of delicious goats cheeses available. Most of the cheeses are young, soft, fresh cheeses (that’s a style), but they also make very popular single and triple cream bries and washed rind. Many visitors know Binnorie for their award-winning marinated feta (especially if you’re a local restauranteur, as it’s the essential ingredient in many a fine-dining dish). But that’s not all. You’ll find lots more to tempt you in the cheese cabinet. There’s also the swoon-worthy triple cream brie and creamy labna (so squishable), and if you are a goat’s cheese lover, you’re spoilt for choice. Select from Buche de Chèvre, the vine-ash goat cheese log; spreadable chevre with dill; or plain, unadorned chèvre that works just as beautifully in baked tarts as it does in a salad. Don’t walk past the washed rind cheese either. It’s a soft surfaceripened white mould cheese that exhibits a characteristic orange rind and melts in your mouth. It’s guaranteed to elicit greedy compliments every time you serve it. Be sure to pick some up on your way into or out of wine country!

A visit to the tasting room will reward you not just with cheeses for your platter but a range of lovely cured meats to turn your cheese-board into a charcuterie board in just the blink of an eye. And if you’re after something a little sweeter – the tiramisu is to-die-for! Drop into the café for a cheese platter and sit on the deck with a coffee or glass of wine and take in the tranquil view. Better yet, bring a picnic blanket and spread it out under the shade of a gum tree. You’ll find Binnorie Dairy at 25 Lodge Rd, Lovedale.

Primed to visit the Hunter Valley for the first time in almost ten years, the Archibald Prize Tour is the highlight of a jam-packed summer program at Maitland Regional Art Gallery. Celebrating 100 years as Australia’s oldest and most loved portraiture prize, the Archibald Prize is an annual open competition awarded to the best portrait, typically a distinguished person of arts, science, or politics. This year’s winning portrait, Peter Wegner’s portrait of Archibald winning artist Guy Warren AM, will be joined by the other 51 finalists for more than six weeks at Maitland Regional Art Gallery from January 2022. The Gallery will host the travelling exhibition from Saturday 22 January to Sunday 6 March, with staff gearing up for another busy summer. The excitement will also take to the skies in January 2022, with the incredible Skywhales experience setting off at dawn from Maitland No.1 Sportsground on Saturday, 15 January. Skywhale and Skywalepapa are two towering hot air balloon sculptures by artist Patricia Piccinini, set to come to life in the glow of sunrise. This large scale community event is a touring initiative of the National Gallery of Australia and supported by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation and Visions of Australia. Everyone is invited to the Sportsground from 4.30am to watch the spectacle unfold and take flight over Maitland from 6am. The event is free, with bookings essential through www.mrag.org.au

Maintaining a Strong Family Tradition

Savannah Estate lies at the gateway to beautiful Mount View, which boasts some of the most stunning views of the Hunter Valley. The Savannah Estate story began in 1964 when Ian and Shirley Peterson purchased an old dairy farm at Mount View intending to farm cattle. In 1971, ten acres of Semillon were planted to supply the nearby McWilliams winery. As they say – the rest is history. As the vines flourished, new varieties were planted, and by 1981, 40 acres of vines had been planted consisting of Semillon, Chardonnay, Viognier, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. In 1981, Petersons Wines was formed, and the cellar door in Mount View opened that same year, cementing the Peterson family as one of the early contributors to the Hunter Valley wine renaissance, which continues to this day. Today, Ian’s son, Colin, runs and manages the business, maintaining and building on his father’s legacy. Savannah Estate was later established on a neighbouring property and named after Savannah Peterson - third-generation winemaker, granddaughter to Ian and Shirley Peterson and daughter to Colin and Judy Peterson, who involved their daughter Savannah in winemaking from an early age. Savannah has since taken the helm of Savannah Estate, involved across all areas of the business and producing quality wines from small select parcels of premium fruit grown in renowned viticulture areas that best reflect their regionality and character.

Savannah embraces wine and food with the same intensity and passion as her forbears and is always hard at work with Gary Reed, who has been the Chief Winemaker across Savannah Estate and Petersons Wines for more than 30 years, to produce new and alternate varieties and styles that include Semillon, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Pinot Gris, Tempranillo, Marsanne, Rose, Chambourcin, Durif, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz as well as a Sparkling White and Sparkling Malbec. When you get to know the Peterson family history, it’s clear their wine isn’t produced in the pursuit of money, although it is profitable. Instead, it’s derived from the family’s passion and love for the winemaking industry and their close ties to the Hunter wine region. “I can confidently say that I truly love what I do, and it never feels like work,” says Savannah. “Making wine is less about business than it is a passion or a hobby. The fact that people buy our wine to take home and enjoy it – that’s our reward.” Well positioned to keep the Peterson family wine legacy alive with fresh ideas, love and hard work – Savannah is uncompromising when it comes to consistency and quality. “Consistency is key at Savannah Estate; wine trends may come and go, but quality will forever be in fashion.” Maintaining her grandfather and father's tried and tested traditional techniques, Savannah is now focused on the 2022 vintage and steering the winery towards better and better wines with every vintage.

Summer Loving Wines WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN Summer is here and with it, warmer days spent enjoying family, good friends and (of course) good wine. Australian summers were made for enjoying wine. Balmy evenings, sun-drenched beach picnics, garden parties, al fresco lunches and barbecues all call for the perfect drop. Although there is no single definition of a perfect summer wine, some varietals tend to suit the warmer weather better than others. How to find the best summer-time wines is a matter of preference and each wine lover’s ultimate quest for summer’s ideal wine. Instead of bold, rich, tannic wines, seek out lighter-bodied reds, whites and rosés with a fruit-forward profile and plenty of acidity for a more refreshing, crisp flavour. To help you reach for the perfect bottle every time, we’ve compiled a selection of wines to take you through the season. GRAPE EXPECTATIONS When it comes to white wines, think crisp, refreshing wines – lighter, simpler, fruit and acid-driven dry or slightly off-dry whites served well chilled. Also, time spent on oak makes for heavier wines, so seek out unoaked whites to keep things light.

In the new world of whites, there aren’t too many surprises, and Sauvignon Blanc with its crisp, herbal edge and refreshing acidity never fails to get a thumbs up from wine drinkers, as does Pinot Gris, which deserves a spot at the table year-round – but is practically born for drinking during the summer months. Originally from the vineyards of Burgundy, this tangy, dry, light white wine with fresh fruity flavours such as pear, apple and melon, is a summer wine through and through and is fast becoming one of the country’s most popular white wines and just perfect with light foods such as pasta, grilled or roast chicken, fish and delicate seafood such as tuna and shrimp. While Chardonnay is a wonderful wine to be enjoyed all year round, the warmer months are the perfect time to get to know the world’s most popular white wine. The Hunter Valley produces rich, ripe Chardonnay wines, with beautiful freshness and vitality and excellent when paired with roast chicken, grilled fish, or crayfish on the BBQ. As a full-bodied white wine that is much loved for its perfumed aromas of peach, tangerine and honeysuckle, Viognier is pure summer in a bottle. It’s also a fabulous food wine that goes with everything from Northern African or spicy Asian cuisine to light meats such as pork and veal, rich shellfish dishes such as seared scallops and grilled lobster, sweet root vegetables and is perfectly at home with a cheese plate. TOP DROPS (Continued) With its fresh, tropical fruit characters, un-oaked style and sheer drinkability, Verdelho is very much the crowd-pleaser and is wellmatched when served with a host of spicy Asian cuisines, including Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian, or simply enjoyed kicking back by the pool. While it is widely grown throughout Australia, the Hunter Valley consistently produce some of the best examples of this variety with pristine aromas and flavours and is ideal for early consumption. With or without food, as a pre-dinner drink or as a refresher at the end of a long, sweltering day, Hunter Valley Semillon is the wine to drink this summer. Naturally low in alcohol and almost devoid of residual sugar, Hunter Semillon is the ideal partner for the season's lighter fish and seafood meals. It's a great accompaniment to vegetarian foods, too. When young, it's great with fresh oysters, cold cooked prawns and simply cooked white-fleshed fish. With some age, it is lovely when served with smoked trout or salmon, roast stuffed chicken, lobster with burnt butter and other flavoursome dishes. An ancient grape, with its history stretching back to the days of the Roman Empire, Fiano wines can range in style from light and fresh to full-bodied and rich. Its love of hot and dry climates has seen it thrive in wine-producing regions such as the Hunter Valley and is the perfect wine for the warmer weather and suits a range of Asian and seafood dishes. Frivolous and fruity, Rosé is everything you want and everything you need in the warmer months. The good thing about Rosé wine is that it is ready to be enjoyed at any time, and there is a style for every palate. Characterised by their light body and crisp finish, they are the ideal wine for summer, perfect when served with seafood such as tuna, barbecued prawns or swordfish DON’T FORGET THE REDS Just because the temperature is rising and the layers are coming off and staying off, there is no need to leave the red wines on the rack. A change in the season simply means a change in red wine style – out with the big, rich and the powerful; in with the elegant, the fragrant, the refreshing. Many red wines are excellent on a hot summer day, and Pinot Noir is the typical go-to warm-weather wine and can be lightly chilled without losing personality and character. Other varieties such as Gamay, Sangiovese, Barbera and Grenache that originated in Mediterranean climates are also perfect for drinking in warm weather. A SPARKLING SUMMER Sparkling Wine might very well be the wine world’s best answer to summer heat. Of course, a glass of Sparkling Wine is always appropriate, regardless of the time of year (or time of day). But in summer, a glass of bubbly is almost mandatory. The wine’s temperature and the bubbles themselves make it a refreshing, cooling beverage, and its high acidity makes them ideally suited to summer foods such as ham, salads, chilled soup and a variety of seafood. Shiraz fans don’t lose out either with a sparkling style that Australia has made its own, fits into so many events and is well matched to a variety of breakfast dishes. You can also pair with roast turkey, roast duck, glazed ham, barbecued ribs, cheese plates and chocolate mousse. Make your summer even more sensational this year by treating yourself to a whole new world of wine with a delicious varietal with which you are not altogether familiar.
