Welcome to 2020 and not just another year of life in the beautiful Hunter Valley but a whole new decade! Throughout the last decade, Your Hunter Valley Magazine has delivered to readers all the fabulous events, wines, cellar doors, restaurants, experiences and people of Wine Country. The good news is that we plan to continue to do so for the next decade – starting with this issue! The next decade no doubt has some great surprises in store for the Hunter, and we can’t wait to bring you all the news about what’s new and happening each month! Much like fashion, food and music, wine styles can define an era — one minute in favour, the next out again. In the ’80s and ’90s, we were drinking big, buttery and oaky Chardonnay and lighter Cabernets. That was until tastes turned towards lighter wines such as Pinot Grigio, cool climate Sauvignon Blanc, unoaked Chardonnay and medium-bodied reds. In this issue, we round up all the varieties to look out for this year – new trends, new tastes and all new favourites. He’s one of Australia’s most awarded winemakers, with a family legacy that stretches back to the 1880s. But after a lifetime surrounded by wine, Neil McGuigan

is stepping back from the industry. This month we speak to Neil about his career, his future and the great legacy he has left for the Hunter Valley. The Hunter is renowned for its premium wine and is increasingly becoming known for the business of brewing beer, but a tasting tour of the region wouldn’t be complete without indulging in a glass or two of what is now one of the more popular beverages – cider! Taste test a few this month (see more, page 25). As Summer is now in full swing, there is no better time to get outside and start exploring all the great activities the Hunter Valley has to offer. Of course, Wine Country is not just for the grownups and this month’s issue is jam-packed full of our favourite things to do with kids. There are loads of family-friendly activities to keep the kids occupied – so look no further than this issue for inspiration!

Check out The Artisan Cheese Room’s new Cheese Bar at Mount Pleasant Wines WORDS Quentin von Essen These days, there is no shortage of places to find cheesy dishes and elaborate cheese boards, but there's nothing quite like purchasing a few quality wedges of hand-picked fromage, freshly sliced charcuterie and a matching bottle of wine to enjoy with friends. Wine and cheese are old friends, with a strong affinity going back many thousands of years, so when the owners of The Artisan Cheese Room in Manly decided to open their new Cheese Bar at the iconic Mount Pleasant Wines in Pokolbin, they could not have wished for a better location than Hunter Valley Wine Country – where the joys of wine and food are celebrated daily. But this is no ordinary cheese shop. This delightful cheese haven and licensed café bar has been created for cheese lovers by cheesemongers who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and providing their customers with a cheese experience they aren’t going to easily find anywhere else. For owners, Paul and Joanna Thompson, opening the new Cheese Bar in the Hunter Valley was a natural progression after opening The Artisan Cheese Room in Manly about four years ago. “Over the years, we have worked closely with so many Hunter Valley winemakers and have made so many tiered Cheese Wheel Cakes for Hunter Valley brides, that it made sense to have a shop in the Hunter Valley to expand on these great relationships,” said Paul. Inside the Cheese Bar are around 50 cheeses on display, sourced from all over the world as well as locally, which you’re encouraged to taste before buying. Whatever you’re looking for, or even if you’re not looking for anything at all, you’ll leave with a cheese that is your new favourite. The Daily Tasting Board is a great place to start and consists of cheeses that are great for tasting right now – making it so much easier to find a cheese you like. Open for breakfast, brunch and lunch; the seasonal cheese focussed menu includes cheese boards, charcuterie, fondue, raclette, cheese flights and much more – including small-batch coffee from Sydneybased roasters, The Little Marionette. You can also pick up a picnic hamper or grazing box to take away with you. Aside from the service and the cheese, the cheese flights and regular cheese pairing masterclasses are another reason you’ll return to the shop again and again. Perfect Pieces for Bubs and Kids
“I started 4Kali six years ago. I make baby clothes and kids clothes, sizes 0000-14, crochet jackets, crochet rugs, dolls clothes, baby toys and lots of bibs. “I have been a stallholder at Handmade in the Hunter for six years, and I love it. I meet different people every time there is a market, and love seeing the joy they get when they see a design they like.” While her own children, Matthew, 19, and Kali, 14, may be too old to wear her designs, Katherine’s daughter will always maintain a link to her mother’s clothing line, lending not only her name but her opinions, to the creative process. “I named the business after my daughter Kali since she helps pick designs and fabrics,” Katherine said. “The fabric inspires me. When I see a particular piece of fabric, I know exactly what I’m going to make out of it, and if I love a piece of fabric, I will wait until I find the perfect pattern for it. “I love all the baby rompers; they are so tiny and cute. I have really bright colours for summer; it makes you feel great.”
WORDS Michelle Meehan
Katherine Cheetham has been sewing since she was a girl. Now a new generation of girls and boys – from babies to teens – are wearing her handiwork thanks to her flourishing part-time business, 4Kali. The Thornton mother-of-two has been creating clothes for her range and selling them at the Handmade in the Hunter Markets for the past six years. She pursues her hobby in her spare time, when not working part-time in the cosmetics section at Big W and says she gets so much enjoyment out of both making each item and seeing the reactions from customers who fall in love with her creations. “I have always been interested in sewing. My mum was a great sewer herself and got me started,” she said. “I sewed at high school and have been sewing since. I also love knitting and crocheting clothes as well.
Don’t forget to stop by this month’s Handmade in the Hunter Markets to check out all of Katherine’s designs, including her gorgeous range of summer rompers that will keep your baby looking cute and feeling cool as the weather heats up. The markets will be held at Kevin Sobels Wines from 9am to 2pm on January 11, 12 and 18, or visit www.handmadehuntermarkets.com.au for more details.

the world with Champagne sales achieving double-digit growth since 2016. Even Cava, which lags far behind Champagne and Prosecco in terms of sales, is having a resurgence. Australian sparkling wines are also extremely popular, and the Hunter Valley has some top drops to compare with the best. DRY ROSÉ The world remains hopelessly in love with Rosé with sales of highquality pale Rosé wines soaring over the past few years – and that trend will continue with this quintessential summer wine being perfect for the outdoor Australian lifestyle. Wine drinklers can expect to see more Rosé wines from Australian producers, and an increasing number of imports from Europe – Provence and other regions in the south of France as well as Spain and Portugal.
WINE STYLES & TRENDS to Watch in 2020
From dry Rosé to young reds and alternate varietals, Your Hunter Valley Magazine rounds up the wine styles and trends that will define this year. Much like fashion, food and music, wine styles can define an era. Styles are in favour, then out again. In the 80’s and 90’s, we were drinking big, buttery and oaky Chardonnay and lighter Cabernets. That was until tastes turned towards lighter wines such as Pinot Grigio and the crisp cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc. It also seemed like just a few years ago that we were drinking Chardonnay-Semillon blends and fortifeds were all the rage. What is clear, is that there has never been a better time to be a lover of wine – there are more styles, more options, and more opportunities to explore wine than ever before. So, what are the wine styles to watch in 2020? IT’S ALL SPARKLES Everywhere you look, sparkling wine sales are growing and who doesn’t love a bit of fizzle – especially high-quality Champagne and sparkling wines? It all points to consumers drinking less, but better and it seems we love different styles of fizz and especially that from other parts of
VARIETAL REVIVAL – A WORLD OF CHOICE The wine scene has changed significantly over the past decade with wine lovers eagerly searching for something new and are increasingly drinking wines made from different countries and alternative grape varietals, in particularly the Italian and Spanish varieties that tend to suit Australia’s warmer climate regions. While the varieties of Negroamaro, Barbera, Montepulciano, Fiano, Nero d’Avola, Nebbiolo and even Grenache are hardly unknown varieties in Australia, the term 'alternative variety' encapsulates those varieties that stand outside the mainstream and are not widely planted. Never before has there been so much choice when it comes to wine styles, grape varieties, even countries from where wines are being imported. This is of course great news for the consumer, and much of it is due to a new wave of sommeliers and winemakers who are keen to let drinkers have a crack at new styles from new countries. A growing number of Hunter Valley wineries have adopted some alternative varieties that include Grenache, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Durif, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Tannat, Petit Verdot and Chambourcin amongst the reds and Vermentino, Savignin, Fiano, Pinot Gris/Grigio and Viognier amongst the whites – and with fantastic results. Over the next few years, you can expect many of these wines to become increasingly known and popular with wine drinkers and close the gap on some of the mainstream varieties. LIGHTER BRIGHTER REDS Long gone are the days when you needed to cellar red wine for years before it was ready to be drunk. Now we want our reds mediumbodied, full of freshness and fruit driven – wines made from grapes such as Gamay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and lighter interpretations of the traditionally fuller bodied varieties like Shiraz. Pinot Noir is one of the fastest growing varieties in the red wine category in Australia. LOWER ALCOHOL WINES Low alcohol has been one of the biggest talking points in the beverage industry for the past two years and the beer industry in Australia has been a pioneer in introducing mid-strength and lower-alcohol varieties. New Zealand wine industry's push to build a new 'lighter wines' segment – with alcohol content 30 per cent below traditional levels – is gaining traction with Australian consumers. Baby Boomers, healthconscious youngsters and moderate drinking professionals are behind the rising popularity of lower-alcohol wines. ORGANIC, VEGAN, NATURAL AND SUSTAINABLE Consumer interest in wines that are certified organic, vegan friendly, biodynamic, preservative free or carbon neutral is continuing to grow as consumers increasingly turn to wines that reflect their raising consciousness – drinking more sustainable, organic, and biodynamic wines from winemakers who have embraced these values in their winemaking philosophies. Expect to see retailers having separate shelves reserved for these wines and restaurant and bar wine lists devoting a section to organic, biodynamic and even 'vegan friendly' wines – balancing their offerings with traditional wines.

of NEIL McGUIGAN WORDS Michelle Meehan
He’s one of Australia’s most awarded winemakers, with a ' family legacy that stretches back to the 1880's. But after a lifetime surrounded by wine, Neil McGuigan is stepping back from the industry he has always been passionate about to concentrate more on the other great love of his life – his family. The third generation of one of Australia’s most well-known wine families officially stood down from his position as CEO of Australian Vintage Limited (AVL) following the company’s annual general meeting in November 2019. Neil had spent the past nine years in the top role at one of Australia’s leading wine producers, having been appointed General Manager for Wine Supply in 2004 before taking over as CEO from Brian McGuigan when his older brother had, in his turn, stepped down from the job. During his tenure, Neil’s immense passion and wine industry knowledge transformed AVL from a bulk wine supplier to a globallyrespected producer of quality branded wine. McGuigan is now the second-largest selling wine brand in the UK and home to Australia’s number one branded bottled red wine. Neil’s resignation effectively means the company, which grew out of the successful McGuigan brand established by Brian, his wife Fay, and Neil in 1992 before being merged with Simeon Wines in 2002 and rebranded as AVL in 2008, is now being led by someone outside of the family for the first time. But just as Brian never really left the family business – he remained a director of AVL until 2015 – Neil isn’t straying too far from the
brand either, taking up a new, and far less time-consuming role, as the company’s Technical Advisor. This will see him consulting with the winemaking team and continuing to forge relationships with customers globally for ten weeks each year. Neil’s incredible award-winning legacy will also live on through the company, where his winemaking skills saw him recognised at the world’s most prestigious wine shows, setting several global records. He was named International Winemaker of the Year four times at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London (2009, 2011, 2012 and 2016) as well as White Winemaker of the Year on four occasions at the International Wine Challenge, which is unprecedented for an Australian producer. To celebrate his association with the winemaking industry, which officially began in 1978 when he graduated with a degree in oenology but had clearly been in his blood from birth, Neil sat down to answer a few questions about his earliest association with wine, his thoughts on the industry and the legacy of the McGuigan family. You grew up surrounded by and immersed in the Hunter wine industry – what is your earliest memory associated with wine? My earliest memory goes back to when I was about four-years-old, and I was put in a 750-gallon cask with my brother Brian to help scrape off Potassium bitartrate. Apparently, I was really good at it, so Brian kept me doing it until I was 19. Did you always feel as though you were going to become involved in the industry because of your family background – or did you ever consider a different career path? Williamtown air base is close by, and when I was at school we had dealings with senior management of the air force and I did seriously (Continued next page) ►

(Continued) consider a life as a pilot. However, I can’t handle fast rollercoasters, so flying a jet fighter was probably out of the question. What is it that you love about the wine industry? The diversity. You are exposed to agricultural, science, marketing, product innovation, customer and consumer needs. But, of course, at the same time, you must love and respect the product. Wine is such a great beverage – it is a living thing and is also very varied depending on where it’s from around the world. The more you know you suddenly realise there is so much more to learn. What do you think sets the Hunter Valley apart in terms of Australia's wine-growing and making regions? The Hunter produces atypical Australian wine. Our Shiraz is more savoury than most Australian regions, for example, and more European in style, which is the reason why Hunter reds perform very well in European wine shows. Hunter Semillons are also unique, not only to Australia but to the world. Our Chardonnays are outstanding and are arguably the reason for the great success of Chardonnay across Australia. The Hunter’s Chardonnay style has evolved over the years, with most producers delivering rich Chardonnays, but now with more elegant and refreshing palates. We are also open to new varieties such as Verdelho, Vermentino and Tempranillo. We respect tradition, but at the same time, are aware that we need to stay relevant to consumers’ changing tastes. What do you think is the biggest strength of the Australian wine industry – and its biggest challenge? The Australian wine industry has two advantages over our world competitors. We are not restrained by tradition and can be innovative with our varieties, regions and blends across Australia. Secondly, the uniqueness and diversity of our regions. Apart from the obvious differences between Tasmania and WA, just think about a radius of 80kms from Adelaide and think of all the regions covered in that area and how different they are – Barossa, McLaren Vale, Fleurieu Peninsula, Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley and Langhorne Creek. Nowhere

else in the world would you see such diversity over such a very small area. Our biggest challenge is water security. We must drought-proof the Murray Darling Basin not only to protect the wine industry but indeed to protect the food bowl of Australia. It is a national emergency. You have been much-awarded throughout your career as a winemaker – what is your winemaking philosophy, and how has it changed over the years? My philosophy hasn’t changed over the years, but hopefully, my ability has improved over time. My Dad [Perc McGuigan] always told me that as a winemaker all we had to do was to capture in the bottle what was on the vine, which sounds simple. We need to ensure that we have the varietal definition in every bottle we make and have it in a pure and pristine form. The plan is to make clean, fresh, varietal distinctive wines that exhibit persistence of flavour. You and your family have had an undeniable impact on both the Hunter and Australian wine industries – what would you say is the greatest legacy of the McGuigan family as a whole, and also yourself individually? As a business, I think we have achieved a number of things. Firstly, we live by two one-liners in our company: ‘Make the wine the hero’ and ‘Over-deliver on quality at every price point’. What that means is that quality is at the core of everything we do. That quest for excellence has enabled us to win International Winemaker of the Year four times at the IWSC and also International White Winemaker of the Year four times at the IWC, which are two of the most prestigious wine competitions in the world. These awards are unprecedented and I believe have helped the Australian wine industry regain its mojo in the UK, where they are held, and also created a lot of
interest in Australian wine globally. Secondly, our involvement with the consumer worldwide. We make very good wine but, at the same time, we also engage with the consumer to ensure we have a diverse range of wine styles. And, we also strive to ensure that everything we produce is best in class. Thirdly, making wine inclusive to the consumer and embracing them into the world of wine and taking them on the terrific wine journey that our industry can facilitate. I think we have helped take the stuffiness out of the wine industry. What are your predictions for the upcoming vintage? It is going to be a great vintage but not as good as 2021! The season running into the 2020 vintage has been one of the driest on record, and it is quite similar to the season leading into the very good 1980 harvest. However, we have had quite a bit of wind during flowering, which seems to have resulted in lower crop levels than last year. There is still a long way to go, and anything can happen, but, at this stage, it is looking good. That said, a significant rain event from now to the end of December would be most welcome. Lastly, you have stepped down from your role as CEO of AVL what will your new role entail and what will its more limited hours give you time for outside of your work commitments? I am remaining with AVL as a technical advisor for ten weeks a year, which will mean that I will still be working with our winemaking team and also in the global marketplace identifying key trends and exploring what we can do to capitalise on those opportunities. Personally, I will be spending more time with Debra, who has been very tolerant of my travelling agenda over the past ten years, and our children Margaux, Matthew and Marnie. ■
My philosophy hasn’t changed over the years, but hopefully, my ability has improved over time.

Bienvenido a
Casa La Vina! WORDS Di von Essen
A hidden gem in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine region, Casa La Vina consists of three exclusive adults-only villas that reflect the rustic, western feel of Santa Fe in New Mexico. With tranquil surrounds, expansive courtyards and outdoor jacuzzi spas, Casa La Vina is a wonderful place from which to explore and drink in the sights, tranquillity and more importantly the tastes of the Hunter Valley.
Casa La Vina is a loose translation of “Home in the Vineyards,” and owners Frank and Tracey Anderiesen say ‘La Vina’ is also the oldest winery in New Mexico – the place where their love of all things ‘adobe’ was born. “After our first trip to the state of New Mexico, in the USA in 1996, we first discovered this Adobe style of home, in areas such as Santa Fe and Albuquerque. In these locations, it is actually a requirement to adopt this incredible southwestern look when building. Even the local hospital and McDonald’s are architecturally designed to imitate the traditional ‘pueblo’ style,” said Tracey. “With the exposed timber ceilings, rendered walls, southwestern décor and cosy adobe feel, we fell in love with the unique look almost immediately. So much so that we decided to build our own!” And build their own they did! With Franks 30 years of building experience under their belts and a burning desire for a tree-change, the empty-nesters purchased the 25-acre bushland covered property in Pokolbin and then set about creating their own little New Mexico for everyone to enjoy. “During that time, we returned to New Mexico, Texas and the Southern States of America to research the architectural designs of the adobe properties and purchase the southwestern decorations for the villas,” said Tracey. “We started on the house, then onto the villas taking over three years in total with just the two of us building.” The Santa Fe inspired adobe villas with rustic, southwestern decor were designed to create the feel and ambience of a contemporary New Mexican adobe. In fact you will feel like you have been transported to the other side of the world the moment you cross the threshold of the gates fronting onto McDonalds Road in Pokolbin.

Each Villa is stand-alone, making it totally private (and might I add – romantic!) The villa’s interiors boast the relaxed luxury promised by the exterior with exposed log timber ceilings, reverse cycle air conditioning, gas log fireplaces, free wireless internet access, iPod docking stations, large flat-screen TV’s (with Foxtel!) a plush king bed and a comfy lounge in an open plan design. A wander through each space will deliver a large ensuite with bathrobes, fluffy towels and beautiful toiletries. A complimentary full breakfast hamper is supplied in a granite top kitchenette with dishwasher and BBQ in an under-cover adobe courtyard. Each Villa also has a covered carport or a remote-controlled garage which is great on those hot summer days. Of course, such unique architecture has turned many a head – including producers and art directors who look to the property to provide authenticity to their productions. Tracey and Frank say this is the favourite part of their business. “We often appear in advertisements, and Instagram location shoots for bridal gown designers, wedding suppliers, and my favourite country singer/songwriter Kasey Chambers had her first clothing collection Poetrybykaseyandrenee shoot here, which was really exciting,” Tracey said. “I also love all the proposals and special occasions that are celebrated here, such as weddings, anniversaries and honeymoons. I guess that’s proof of the special and romantic place we have created here,” she added. The location is also pretty great, being close to three of the largest wineries in the Hunter Valley – Bimbadgen, Tempus Two and Hope Estate – which are all regular venues for local and international acts. The Roche Complex (where you will find Tempus Two) also plays host to some of wine countries tastiest eateries (like Oishii – the locals favourite) or perhaps the award-winning Il Cacciatore if you're looking for something nearby, and it’s a special occasion (or proposal?)

Catherine Vale Wines Experience Something Uniquely Different WORDS Quentin von Essen There is no denying that the landscape of Australian wines has changed significantly over the past decade with wine lovers eagerly searching for something new and increasingly drinking wines made from alternative grape varietals, in particular, the Italian and Spanish varieties that tend to suit Australia’s warmer climate regions. This rise of ‘alternative’ varieties in Australia is becoming an increasingly important topic for the country’s winemakers which has been largely driven by an increased awareness that the traditional varieties planted in Australia don’t always suit the sites or regions they currently occupy. Wine producers are now also increasingly aware of the impact climate changes are having on their wine grapes and are switching to more resilient grape varieties to cope with these changing conditions now and in the future. As a result, a growing number of Hunter Valley wineries have taken it upon themselves to adopt a few alternative varieties and with fantastic results. For Wendy Lawson of Catherine Vale Wines in Broke, the move to adopt the alternate varieties of Arneis, Barbera and Dolcetto was an obvious one. Established by Wendy and her late husband Bill on a 100-acre property at Broke in the early 1990's, Catherine Vale Wines took the lead in 1998 by introducing new Italian varieties into the region. After initially planting the two white varieties Semillon and Chardonnay, and a desire to expand their range of wines to include reds, Wendy and Bill made the decision to identify what grape varieties
would be most suitable to not only the region and climate but also appeal to visitors to the Hunter Valley. "The Hunter Valley has no shortage of large Shiraz and Cabernet producers," said Wendy. "For a relatively small winery producing Chardonnay and Semillon and considering what red grape varietals to plant, it made sense to introduce varieties that were different to the typical Hunter Valley red varieties of Shiraz and Cabernet." After some extensive research, Wendy eventually narrowed the choice down to the alternative Italian varieties Dolcetto and Barbera from the Piedmont region in Italy which they planted in 1998 and in doing so took the lead in the production of alternative varieties in the Hunter. It proved to be an inspired decision as Catherine Vale Wines is now one of just a few Hunter Valley vineyards growing Barbera and the only winery in the region producing Dolcetto. A few years later they added the Italian white varietal Arneis to the vineyard. Known affectionately as "Italy’s little rascal," Arneis is an elegant Italian white wine grape variety that is currently creating a real buzz amongst wine lovers and is regarded as being among the top new white varieties in Australia. In addition to Chardonnay, Semillon, Verdelho and Arneis amongst the whites and Barbera and Dolcetto amongst the reds, Catherine Vale Wines also have a small range of popular dessert wines – namely Fortified Verdelho and Late Harvest Semillon. "These new varieties add another dimension to our enjoyment of wine, giving the consumer a touch of the exotic, new tastes and also provoking debate," said Wendy. To experience something altogether different and wines that are relatively unique to the Hunter region and Australia, a visit to Catherine Vale Wines is a must. The spectacularly located property borders the World Heritagelisted Yengo National Park that forms the backdrop to the unique purpose-built cellar door which was designed in the style of an Australian country church to complement the nearby family residence – a former Edwardian-style Uniting Church Manse.
These new varieties add another dimension to our enjoyment of wine, giving the consumer a touch of the exotic, new tastes and also provoking debate.

Staying the Same is Never Enough at
The Garden Cellars WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN It’s one of the oldest cellar door complexes in the Hunter Valley. But while the buildings that once housed tastings for Hungerford Hill still showcase a wide range of Hunter Valley reds and whites, its current tenant, The Garden Cellars, is known for more than just great wine.
Located within the Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village, once the site of the renowned Hungerford Hill winery and tourist complex, The Garden Cellars offers a range of craft beer, local wine and premium spirits. After the previous owners had placed the business into liquidation, it was re-opened in 2011 by local businessman Peter Clarke, who was keen to make the most of what he saw as a prime opportunity within the bustling tourist precinct. While originally trained in accounting and law/economics, earning his degree at Sydney University, The Garden Cellars was far from Peter’s first foray into the world of small business, having been self-employed in a variety of successful enterprises since 1968, selling everything from surfboards and yachts to fibreglass roofing. After moving to the Hunter Valley from Sydney in the late 1990's, Peter diversified his interests even further to include chocolates (Hunter Valley Chocolate Company) and premium spirits (Hunter Distillery). However, with a lifelong interest in wine, beer and spirits (at one point his own personal cellar contained more than 8000 bottles!), it seemed The Garden Cellars was a perfect fit for Peter. After taking the reins of the struggling retail liquor outlet, Peter saw the need to transform its smaller, more boutique range into a more mainstream offering. “We had reservations as to how the cellar had been operated by the previous owners, who placed the business into liquidation,” Peter said.

Visit the famous " Tunnell of Beer"
“The range was much smaller when we first opened. We were mainly wine-focused and stocked just a few beers. “We decided to diversify the range, which was more focused on expensive Australian and international wines and beers, to a more mainstream range with better value for our customers. “We discovered the ever-increasing popularity in craft beers and premium quality spirits. We now try to keep our range ever-evolving to suit the changing tastes and needs of our customers.” Being located in the heart of one of Australia’s oldest winemaking regions, it’s little wonder that Peter remains committed to supporting plenty of locally-made products. “We stock a large range of local products. A lot of our customers are interested in trying local, and it only makes sense for us to offer local products,” he said. “We currently have many Hunter Valley wines from different local producers, and we are increasing our local beers as much as possible. “We’ve recently added Ironbark Hill beers to our range. They are only a few minutes away from us, and their beers are proving to be hugely popular. We also stock Hunter Distillery’s schnapps, liqueurs, vodka and gin. These continue to be very successful products for us.” The Garden Cellars have also stayed true to the site’s cellar door heritage, now acting as the main distribution and tasting point for two Hunter wine brands including Mt Eyre Vineyard. Mt Eyre Vineyards combines a European family tradition of winemaking with a generation of experience in Australian viticulture, with their first Australian vineyard (Three Ponds) planted in Broke in 1970 by Neil Grosser. Today, it is still carefully managed by Neil and his son David, with more than 30 acres of Semillon, Chardonnay, Chambourcin and Shiraz, while Mt Eyre’s second property, the Holman Estate at Pokolbin, ►
“We pride ourselves on the knowledge of our staff. Because we stock such a large range, customers are always asking for recommendations or for explanations of our products. Our staff are always happy to help and lend their knowledge. “The staff have an ongoing thirst for knowledge about new wines, beers and spirits, and this is continuing each week with new products being constantly released.” With a range as extensive as the one on offer at The Garden Cellars, the staff certainly have plenty of products to stay up-to-date with especially when it comes to the business’s famed “Tunnel of Beer”, which has become an essential stop for any beer enthusiast visiting the Hunter Valley.
features 16 acres planted to Shiraz, Merlot and Viognier, as well as a large olive grove. The Garden Cellars has been acting as Mt Eyre’s cellar door since 2010, stocking the complete range of their wines as well as some interesting back vintages, museum releases and several exclusive lines that are not available online or in bottle shops and restaurants. “We are the cellar door to Mt Eyre and also Polin & Polin Wines. Both wineries have been long established but no longer operate their own cellar doors, so it was more economical to have us do their marketing and distribution,” Peter said. In the tradition of a vineyard-based cellar door, The Garden Cellars has daily tastings, however, their much broader stock range means it offers much more than your average vineyard experience. “The combination of wines, beer, spirits and chocolate tastings gives our customers a different experience to other tasting options in the Hunter Valley,” Peter said. “Our informative tastings allow the customers to connect with the products. It also allows us to understand the tastes of our customers, which are always evolving. We can then adjust what we do as well.” The key to the success of these tastings and the overall customer experience at The Garden Cellars is clearly the businesses staff. “Our team currently includes Andrew, Amanda, Gabby, and Steve. All of our staff has at least five years of experience in the industry and are responsible for the everyday running of the store and sales of our products,” Peter said. “We also have great staff who help out in our busy times such as Simone and Melissa, who are well versed and highly knowledgeable when it comes to talking about wine, beer and spirits. Our staff work as a team to make customers’ visits as enjoyable as possible.
“Our tunnel of beer is amazing. We stock over 800 different beers from around the world. We believe in offering choice for our customers,” Peter said. “With new breweries opening every month and the existing ones bringing out new products, it is no wonder that we have the widest variety in the Hunter. Craft beer fans often enjoy new beers, not just sticking to the same brews they’ve tried before. As beers fans ourselves, we understand this and try to make sure we can keep our customers excited and happy to return and enjoy something new. “We are always being asked for beers that customers have heard about or experienced overseas. Part of what we do is try to track down these beers, and while we aren’t always successful, one beer we were able to track down has been added to our regular line-up over the years. “It was a beer a customer had tried but couldn’t find in the local area, called Golden Stout Time. As the name suggests, it’s a Golden Gaytime-flavoured stout, and it’s proven to be hugely popular and is delicious too.” With all this and more already on offer, you’d think there was nothing left to do to improve The Garden Cellars experience, but Peter believes that when it comes to business, you can’t afford to rest on your laurels. “The old adage ‘while I live, I grow’ is true, and unless you constantly evolve and change you stagnate, and the customer always wants the latest. Staying the same is never enough,” he said. “This is one of the oldest cellar doors in the Hunter Valley. The building has been here since the 1960's and was originally the cellar door for Hungerford Hill. It always needs refurbishment and adding a larger range means increasing refrigeration and changes to the shop format, which will both be happening in 2020.” ■

Summer Lovin’ WINES WORDS Quentin von Essen
With the change to warmer Summer temperatures, so too comes a shift in our drinking habits. Think crisp, refreshing white wines—lighter, simpler, fruit and acid-driven dry or slightly off-dry whites, served well chilled. But don’t discount the reds altogether as chilled red wines can be wonderful on a hot day – especially during a hot Australian Summer. Many Australian Pinot Noirs can be lightly chilled without losing personality and character, and grapes such as Gamay, Sangiovese, Barbera and Grenache that originated in Mediterranean climates, are just perfect for drinking in warm weather.

How to find the best Summer-time wine is a matter of preference and each wine lover’s ultimate quest for Summer’s ideal wine. To help you reach for the perfect bottle every time, we’ve compiled a selection of wines to take you through the season. Rosé undeniably took first place as last year’s drink of the Summer and the pink wine continues to be everywhere this Summer, especially when seafood such as tuna, barbecued prawns or swordfish is on the table. In the new world of whites, there aren’t too many surprises, and Sauvignon Blanc with its crisp, herbal edge and refreshing acidity never fails to get a thumbs up from many wine drinkers, as does Pinot Gris. Originally from the vineyards of Burgundy, this tangy, dry, light white wine with fresh fruity flavours such as pear, apple and melon, is a Summer wine through and through and is fast becoming one of the country’s most popular white wines and can be paired with a variety of food with ease. Summer in a bottle! Viognier is a full-bodied white wine that is much loved for its perfumed aromas of peach, tangerine and honeysuckle. It’s also a fabulous food wine which goes with everything from the spicy northern African to Asian cuisine, from white meat to reds meat and with all the earthy flavours and textures such as mushrooms and root vegetables, plus it’s just at home with a cheese plate. Originating from the Portuguese island of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco, Verdelho’s suitability for Mediterranean-style climates with warm-hot, dry Summers makes it a perfect fit for Australian Summers. With its fresh, tropical fruit characters, un-oaked style, and sheer drinkability, Australian Verdelho is very much the crowd-pleaser and perfect when served with a host of spicy Asian cuisines including Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian, or simply enjoyed kicking back by the pool. While it is widely grown throughout Australia, the Hunter Valley consistently produce some of the best examples of this variety with
pristine aromas and flavours and ideal for early consumption. With or without food, as a pre-dinner drink or as a refresher at the end of a long, hot day, Hunter Valley Semillon is the wine to drink this Summer. Naturally low in alcohol and almost devoid of residual sugar, Hunter Semillon is the ideal partner for the season's lighter fish and seafood meals. It's a great accompaniment to vegetarian foods, too. When young, it's great with fresh oysters, cold cooked prawns and simply cooked whitefleshed fish. With some age, it is lovely when served with smoked trout or salmon, roast stuffed chicken, lobster with burnt butter and other flavoursome dishes. While Chardonnay makes for great drinking all year round, the warmer months are the perfect time to really get to know the world’s most popular white wine. To beat the heat, with Chardonnay, choose an unoaked Chardonnay without the heavy, buttery texture of malolactic fermentation. It’s a simple and effective way to compete with the warmer temperatures and great with a crunchy salad, sushi and sashimi; crayfish or lobster on the BBQ, steamed or grilled fish and it is heaven on earth with fresh oysters. Sparkling Wine might very well be the wine world’s best answer to Summer heat. A glass of Sparkling Wine is always appropriate, regardless of the time of year (or time of day). But in Summer a glass of bubbly feels almost mandatory. The wine’s temperature and the bubbles themselves make it a refreshing, cooling beverage, and its high acidity makes them ideally suited to Summer foods such as ham, salads, chilled soups and a variety of seafood. This Summer, why not try something new – a variety you are not altogether familiar with? You have a world of choice... whatever you decide, when you match Summer whites with Summer foods in the company of good friends, you just can’t go wrong. ■

ADRIAN
Sparks
HUNTER VALLEY Winemaker of the Year WORDS Quentin von Essen
When Adrian Sparks, joined the ranks of one of Australia’s premier wine families McWilliam’s Wines in 1998, he was able to explore and experiment with a plethora of different wine styles. It was here that he honed his craft and developed a deep love for white wines and in particular Chardonnay, a varietal that he has had incredible success with. The Riverina-born winemaker has worked for the McWilliams Group, which owns Mount Pleasant Wines since he was studying chemistry in the late 1990's at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. A part-time job in the cellar door to earn some cash eventually turned into a fulltime career in the laboratory, with Adrian switching his studies to learn more about winemaking. After working his way up through the company to the position of Senior Winemaker, Adrian eventually moved from Griffith to the Hunter Valley in 2014 to join the Chief Winemaker Jim Chatto at Mount Pleasant. He spent four years working with Jim before both men were once again promoted; Jim to the position of Chief Winemaker of the McWilliam’s Group, and Adrian to the top job at Mount Pleasant. As only the fifth Chief Winemaker in the 98-year history of the winery, Adrian is following in the footsteps of some of Australia’s most celebrated winemaking alumni including the late great Maurice O’Shea, Phil Ryan and the highly celebrated Chatto. A passionate advocate for NSW wines, at Mount Pleasant Adrian has continued to flourish as a winemaker par excellence while at the
same time becoming a great champion for the region in both the winery and on the judging circuit. At the 2019 Hunter Valley Wine Industry Gala, Adrian was awarded the prestigious title of Winemaker of the Year which recognises those Hunter Valley winemakers who have achieved success on the show circuit and have also made significant commitments to the promotion of not only their own wines but the Hunter Valley region. And the awards just keep coming. The Mount Pleasant team walked away with 27 medals and trophies at the Hunter Valley Wine Show in 2019 and at the annual NSW Wine Awards the 2018 Mountain D Shiraz championed over all other wines to take home the title of overall Best Dry Red and be awarded the ultimate title of 2019 NSW Wine of the Year and claim the NSW Governor’s Trophy for Best in Show. It was the second year running that Mount Pleasant has been awarded the trophy for Best in Show, following the success of Old Paddock & Old Hill Shiraz 2017 at the 2018 awards ceremony. While Adrian is overjoyed with the success he has had as a winemaker, he said his goals at Chief Winemaker didn’t revolve around awards. "I’m more interested in just being true to what I believe in terms of winemaking, being true to the site, being true to Mount Pleasant and I suppose, true to the history, what O'Shea wanted to make, and what he was thinking when he made his wines," said Adrian. “I think as a winemaker; you have to understand and respect what the winemakers before you were doing. As a result, I've got a good understanding of how Phil (Ryan) made his wines and having that experience working with Jim Chatto also provided so much education about the Hunter Valley and Mount Pleasant. “And I think that's the most important thing; you need to be at a place to understand it, you can't just walk into a winery and make the best wines from day one. You have to understand the vineyards and the blocks and continuously educate yourself, and it all takes time, those things all take time. “I think that's sort of what we've done in the last four years, tried to really understand the vineyards and understand the wine styles and think about what we want to achieve in the future and I think our best wines are still ahead of us.”
I think as a winemaker; you have to understand and respect what the winemakers before you were doing.“

STEP BACK IN TIME
Cultural Landmark from Major Engineering Feat WORDS Michelle Meehan
Located two minutes outside the city centre, Walka Recreation and Wildlife Reserve is one of Maitland’s most popular picnic and recreation areas, visited by hundreds of runners, families and nature lovers each week. But do you know the story behind the towering chimney and ornately bricked pumphouse standing proudly at the centre of the 112-hectare site? The historic Walka Water Works were built in 1887 in a bid to improve water supply to the inner city areas of Newcastle. The site was chosen by noted British hydraulic engineer William Clark, with the proposed water works, estimated to cost 170,000 pounds to construct, designed to supply water to 37,000 people. Several changes in government prevented the initial plan from being realised until December 1882, when the Public Works Department called for tenders to construct the Walka reservoir and associated works. The design of the waterworks was a major engineering achievement at the time. Water was pumped from the nearby Hunter River at Oakhampton to a large reservoir at Walka, moving through a large brick tunnel 1.8m in diametre, which was built 9m below ground. Three pumping stations, an engine and boiler house, filter beds and settling and clear water tanks were also built on the site to facilitate distribution of water through the Walka Water Supply Scheme, which served as the sole water supply of the Lower Hunter towns from 1887 until 1929, when it was superseded by the Tarro Pumping Station. At the time it was built, the Walka Water Works was the most sophisticated scheme of its type in the country and the first place in Australia to have a water treatment system that incorporated the original river water source, through to the Walka lake reservoir and on to filtered kitchen tap water.

The water works were downgraded to become a standby site following the completion of the Chichester Dam in 1924 and were later shut down in 1931. By 1945 the water works had been officially closed, however, a section of the site was leased to the Electricity Commission of NSW between 1951 and 1978, which used it to host a prefabricated power plant. The Walka Water Works is now considered an important cultural landmark and was listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. With its striking chimney and ornate brickwork, the pumphouse is part of one of the largest and most intact 19th-century industrial complexes in the Hunter Valley, which also includes the settling tanks and the stone dam wall to the lake. In the mid-1980s a Trust was formed with the aim of re-opening the site to the public and restoring the water works complex. These days it has become a popular site for picnickers, recreation and fitness enthusiasts, with more than 300 runners and walkers converging on the bushland site each Saturday morning for the free 5km parkrun event. Now known as Walka Recreation and Wildlife Reserve, it features 112 hectares of park, lake and bushland and is home to a large population of wild kangaroos, as well as more than 140 species of birds. Twelve kilometres of mainly gravel trails provide a variety of wellsignposted routes for walkers and cyclists to explore flora and fauna throughout the site, while the Walka Ecology Walk Explorers Guide was created to identify the best viewing areas to observe the wildlife around the lake. A mini train track runs along the edge of the lake, with a group of passionate volunteers offering rides to passengers on various dates throughout the year, while bridal parties and other groups can hire areas of the lawn and the former boiler house for wedding receptions and other events. A host of educational resources have also been developed to help visitors and school students understand and interact with the site, which are available on the Maitland City Council website. These resources, which won the 2016 Interpretation Australia National Award for Excellence, include the Walka Bird app, developed with the assistance of the Hunter Bird Observer’s Club, which allows visitors to learn more about Walka’s communities of freshwater birds, woodland birds and raptors. The Walka Water Works Listening Guide has been designed to celebrate and compliment the site’s natural environment, and to provide an aural experience that connects listeners more deeply to the variety of sights and sounds around them, with musical samples paired with on-site nature recordings. Upcoming resources due for release in 2020 include new education units focused on the human history of the Walka Water Works site, while future conservation work at the site will continue thanks to a recent $366,000 grant from the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund (CRIF).
