Welcome back to Hunter Valley Wine Country! It’s fair to say that 2020 will not go down as our all-time favourite year in the Hunter Valley. The closure of most of our local tourism-based businesses and cancellation of all of our events due to Covid-19 restrictions coming hot on the heels of long-term drought, close calls with bush fires and then, of course, the resulting smoke haze has undoubtedly taken a toll on our region physically, financially and mentally. In the 13 years we’ve been publishing Your Hunter Valley Magazine (many will remember it’s original Hunter Blackboard format), we’ve never missed an issue until 2020, and as we’ve published 177 issues over those years, to say these past two months have seemed a little strange would be a massive understatement! But we’re a resilient lot, and we are so pleased to be back at the presses again and delivering this magazine, in both print and digital format, to all of our visitors throughout June and July. So dust off the self-isolation cobwebs and hit the wine trails because we’ve been waiting for you! This month we head out to Broke Fordwich to check out the new cellar door at the gorgeous French-

provincial style Talits Estate. It’s been eight years in the planning and a year in construction, but one look at the new cellar door makes it clear the result has been well worth the wait. At Campbell's Store Campbell’s Store is a historic sandstone building that sits proudly at the gateway to Morpeth’s main street. Founded in 1821, Morpeth Village was once Australia’s second-largest river port and a thriving commercial hub in NSW. Cessnock City Council has announced that it has secured $1,950,000 under Round 4 of the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund – Infrastructure Projects Stream to build an off-road, shared cycleway between Branxton and Greta, providing a co-contribution of $650,000 towards the project to bring the 3.3km cycleway to life. The cycleway will connect the Branxton and Greta war memorials, acknowledging the sacrifice of local service personnel. The memorial trail is expected to be hugely popular with locals and also visitors to the region providing a new recreational offering. Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said the funding announcement is fantastic news and is a result of Council working with the community to attract financial support for the project. “This project grew out of community advocacy and initiative. Council has supported the community’s vision through ensuring the project was shovel ready so that when funding became available, we were in a good position to make a strong application.” “Working collaboratively has worked exceptionally well. Congratulations to all involved, including the Branxton-Greta Business Chamber and the local RSL sub-branches.” Mayor Pynsent also thanked His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d) Governor of New South Wales for his support with a grant of Vice-Regal Patronage for the project. His Excellency support was secured by the Branxton Greta Business Chamber (BGBC). President of the BGBC Brett Wild, who has advocated tirelessly for this project, said securing the support of His Excellency was a huge milestone in the life-span of the cycleway. Mr Wild welcomed the funding for what he has called a piece of legacy infrastructure. “This completed memorial cycleway will educate generations to come about the sacrifice of local men who went to war. Some of these young men were seeking adventure but instead were faced with one of the most horrific wars. It honours their commitment, sacrifice and mateship and reflects our strong local military history.” Further expansion of the cycleway to incorporate a war memorial aspect along the route is being co-ordinated by Branxton to Greta Memorial Cycleway Limited. The Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) supports the Australian Government’s commitment to creating jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future.

‘OLIVE’ LAMBS Of the Hunter Valley

An unlikely partnership has blossomed in the Hunter Valley between renowned olive producer, Pukara Estate and Newcastle’s quality meat supplier, Hunter Valley Premium Meats as a result of Pukara Estate producing a very unique product – ‘olive grazed’ lamb. Steve Goodchild, the founder of one of Australia’s most successful olive oil, vinegar and condiments producer Pukara Estate, introduced lambs to his olive grove several years ago to assist in a more passive approach to managing the olive grove and reduce the ever-increasing cost of production. The property has been fenced in such a way that allows the olive trees to be continually ‘cell grazed’, which in turn reduces pruning costs as a result of the lambs eating the olive foliage and olive fruit on the lower portion of the trees. Another significant saving is the elimination of herbicide usage throughout the grove due to the inter-row weeds and pasture being grazed by the lambs. As the lambs consistently feed on olive foliage and olive fruit, this unique diet contributes to a ‘passive flavour infusion’ of the lamb. The result is an incredibly unique tasting, high-quality product that caught the attention of Tim Perram from Hunter Valley Premium Meats. “It’s rare in business that you get a chance to reduce operational costs and at the same time, generate such a unique and saleable by-

product at the other end as a result of the cost reduction activities,” said Steve. “It’s really nice to have a good news story associated with agriculture for a change.” Tim Perram from Hunter Valley Premium Meats has a real focus on sourcing and producing local meat products. His network of customers and distribution was precisely what was required to get the premium lamb product to consumers throughout the Hunter Valley and Newcastle. “It became quite apparent that there was a synergy between the two businesses and the next thing we know, Pukara Estate Premium Lamb is being served in some of the region’s iconic pubs, glamorous dinner parties and premiere restaurants,” said Tim. “Strong ties between all Hunter Valley businesses and innovative solutions to problems are more critical than ever in current times we are facing.”

It’s been eight years in the planning and a year in construction, but one look at Talits Estate’s new cellar door makes it clear the result has been worth the wait. Built towards the front of the spectacular 50-acre Broke property, the cellar door offers a more contemporary take on the old-world glamour of the estate’s iconic homestead, while still staying true to its French-inspired legacy. Designed by Newcastle-based firm, EJE Architecture, it features a natural, neutral colour scheme that ensures the building is at one within the surrounding rural landscape, while the sandstone quoins, pale blue shutters and creamy rendered finish offer echoes of the homestead’s traditional Provencal façade. Pass through the rustic timber barn doors, which add a sense of richness and warmth to the entry, and you’ll find a welcoming interior layered with luxury and comfort, which invites guests to stop and relax for a while within the embrace of its homely ambience. Owner Gayle Meredith said the vision was always to create a destination that would encourage visitors to linger longer and enjoy everything Talits Estate has to offer. “Essentially we’ve been coming up with our vision for the cellar door since we took ownership of Talits Estate eight years ago,” she said.

“When we first acquired the property, we transitioned from being grape growers to being winemakers, and as we built up a loyal fan base for the wines, we started to envision what our cellar door experience at Talits Estate would look like. “There’s a lot of history with the Talits Estate homestead, so we wanted to create a cellar door experience that celebrated the kind of legacy and aesthetic of that, but also in a more contemporary manner. “And we wanted to create a cellar door experience where people can come and stay for a few hours. We don't want people to come in, do a quick tasting and be shuffled out the door. “We want families to come and bring their kids, have a tasting, enjoy some local produce on our cheese and charcuterie platters and stay for a couple of hours, play games on the lawn, play petanque with their friends and enjoy Broke and the landscape for what it is.” From a fenced grass area perfect for those who bring their pooch, to a range of outdoor seating where parents can enjoy a tasting while their children play games on the lawn, the cellar door and surrounds have certainly been designed to enable that sip and savour experience.

The small, but perfectly formed cellar door offers a range of tasting spaces suitable for various groups of guests, with folding glass and aluminium doors running along the rear of the building allowing it to be opened right up to create a seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor areas. A rustic fireplace with a gorgeous stacked stone mantel, surrounded by comfy lounge chairs, provides a cosy spot to try a few wines. At the same time, the elegant timber dining table in front of the terrace windows is an intimate space for a group of eight to enjoy a winemaker’s talk and tasting while also taking in the views. “I think what's really lovely about the cellar door is that there's a real sense of space, an opening up between the outdoors and the indoors, with high ceilings and beautiful fixtures and fittings,” Gayle said. “We have several spaces within the cellar door that can be utilised for tastings. There are various lounges that hug the fireplace, which is really nice for larger groups of about 12, and we've also got a sit down tasting area for eight at the dining table, which is excellent for a more formal tasting experience. This is where we’ll do guided wine tastings with the winemaker and perhaps matched canapes, as an event option. “Then obviously there is the bar as well, where we can have up to eight people for a more casual experience with the cellar door manager, while outdoors we’ve got various lounge areas and another more formal tasting table.” Of course, the tasting experience is about far more than where you choose to sit, with an award-winning array of wines providing plenty to look forward to. The range is created for Talits Estate by renowned local winemaker Daniel Binet, who has spent more than 17 years honing his craft in the Hunter Valley and has been nominated twice for The Wine Society’s Young Winemaker of the Year and Hunter Valley Rising Star awards, as well as the Hunter Wine Excellence scholarship. ►

Daniel utilises the estate’s meticulously managed Merlot and Shiraz vines, as well as other grape varietals sourced from the surrounding Broke Fordwich area, to create a premium selection of wines under the Talits label. Over the years the wines have received plenty of praise from customers and critics alike, with wine show success including a collection of medals from the Hunter Valley Boutique Winemakers Show and the Australian and New Zealand Boutique Wine Show.

A wine tasting experience at the new cellar door will traverse the full gamut of flavours on offer, beginning with their two sparkling wines – a Pinot Noir and a Merlot – before moving on to their newly released Chardonnay, “Le Reserve Privée”.

“All of our wines have names, and when they’re translated, it’s like a nod to the French tradition. The Chardonnay is called the “private reserve” because I adore Burgundy Chardonnay, and I wanted to make something that was a nod to traditional Burgundian Chardonnay winemaking styles,” Gayle said. “This wine features full malolactic fermentation, less stirring and brand new French oak. It’s a wine that’s drinking beautifully now but also will age quite nicely.” ►

The tasting will then progress on to Talit’s Pinot Noir and Merlot Rosés, before a side-by-side tasting of estate-grown Merlot, allowing guests to learn about how much the vintage, climate and different weather patterns in a season can affect the taste of a wine. “We finish with our statement wine, which is called ‘Le Fruit Défondu’, which translates to the forbidden fruit,” Gayle said. “It’s a 50-50 blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah, and the reason that it's called ‘Le Fruit Défondu’ is that traditionally in France it’s forbidden to blend Pinot Noir and Syrah. “It’s a beautiful wine because the thing about Pinot is that it’s an elegant and perfumed fruit, and then you contrast that with a fine balance of the spicy and herbal notes of the Syrah, so it’s the beauty of both worlds.” Visitors looking to extend their “tasting” experience in a different direction can also sample a variety of craft beers on offer at the cellar door, which have been created for the estate with a local brewer under the brand Broke Brewing. There will be up to four styles on tap at any one time, with the current rotation including a lager, a pale ale, a session ale and a brown ale. Gayle said it was all about expanding and extending what is on offer at Talits Estate to ensure each visit is a memorable one. “It’s definitely not a cookie-cutter cellar door, and, when you come to Broke and especially when you come to Talits Estate, you feel like you’re being welcomed into the family business.” “There are four members of our direct family who are going to be

As we go to print, we’ve just experienced our first weekend of regional travel, which saw Hunter Valley Wine Country a firm favourite for visitors who were desperate to get out of home and enjoy a weekend away. Regional travel was amongst other welcome new steps in the post-pandemic reopening of our local economy which also saw restaurants, cafés and pubs host up to 50 patrons, the long-awaited return of cellar door wine tastings and galleries, zoos and beauty salons all reopen. Synonymous with the red wines of Tuscany and all the romanticism that goes with it, Sangiovese is the most planted red grape in Italy and is the most important grape variety used in the production of Tuscany's greatest red wines, providing the backbone to the popular wines of Chianti. No other Italian red commands greater worldwide recognition than Sangiovese and in an increasingly competitive global wine market, Italy’s abundance of native grapes provides a welcome point of difference. From the Latin for sanguis Jovis, or “the blood of Jove,” mercurial Sangiovese has awarded Italy its best wine moments and became a major component of the super Tuscan revolution that brought Italy to the forefront of global wine. With the quality ever improving and Australians focusing more and more on enjoying wine with food, Sangiovese has found a permanent place in our wine scene. Here in the Hunter Valley, Sangiovese was first planted in 1995 at Tintilla Estate by the Lusby family. Plantings have now grown to include at least 15 other vineyards in the region – amongst them Adina Vineyard, Pokolbin Estate and Kevin Sobels Wines. The variety produces elegant wines with powerful aromas and is notoriously high in tannin and acidity but lighter in fruit. The flavours characteristic of Sangiovese range from cherries and red plums to herbs, spices and tea like flavours. The wines tend to be medium bodied, dry and usually quite savoury. The use of oak has become increasingly popular and used to draw the richer flavours from the grapes. While Italian styles tend to have more acid and tannin, the Australian Sangiovese wines tend to be a little fruitier, with riper flavours and higher alcohol. However, there is a trend for the styles to converge. This wine is easy to understand and is enjoyable in its youth, but it’s also rewarding with moderate to long ageing. ►

It took thousands of convicts, several route deviations and ten years to complete, opening up a direct route from Sydney to the Hunter Valley in the early years of the penal colony. But while the Great North Road may have been rendered virtually redundant almost as soon as it was completed in 1836, the 264km long route remains one the greatest feats of engineering in Australia during the 19th century. Construction of the monumental infrastructure project was started in 1826 by the government of the day, partly in response to a petition from the wealthy settlers of the Hunter Valley who called for an overland route to Sydney to be developed. At that stage, the only way to access the Hunter was via sea, with the land in between the two settlements made up of fearsome sandstone mountains with deep gorges, razorback ridges and towering bluffs. Convicts working in gangs, and often wearing leg irons, spent the next ten years battling geographic and geological obstacles to construct the road, using only hand tools and gunpowder to cut and blast their way through the rock. An incredible feat of engineering and skill, the road featured an impressive series of timber and stonework structures including buttresses, culverts, bridges and nine-metre-high retaining walls. However the route of the Great North Road was subject to much conjecture, and many changes throughout its construction, with several sections abandoned or left unfinished as new administrators with different ideas to their predecessors took control of the project. The final route begins from what is now the Sydney suburb of Five Dock, crossing the Parramatta River at Abbotsford and passing through Ryde and Dural before reaching the Hawkesbury River at Wisemans Ferry, 100km to the north. Winding through the isolated and often rugged country along the edge of Dharug National Park, it continues through Bucketty before dividing at Wollombi, with one branch continuing to Warkworth via Broke while the other travels to Cessnock, Maitland and on to Newcastle. At the time it was built it was a long and lonely trail, with sections of steep gradients that could be difficult to traverse, and little access to food or water for those travelling with stock. These elements combined to work against the popularity of the road and soon after it was finished in 1836 it fell into disuse, with alternate routes developed to bypass its difficult and dry sections. The introduction of steamships in Australia in the early 1830s was the final blow for the road, with a regular service developing between Sydney,

Newcastle and Morpeth that proved far more efficient and comfortable for passengers and freight travelling to the Hunter. In the last century, countless alternate land-based routes were developed as modern-day Australia evolved. However, most of the Great North Road remains in use today as part of local road networks or as an alternative, slower paced scenic route between Sydney and the Hunter, although a lot of the original surface is well buried under bitumen. Relics such as stone retaining walls, wharves, culverts, bridges and buttresses can still be seen along the entire length of the Great North Road – in Sydney suburbs like Epping and Gladesville, at Wisemans Ferry or Wollombi, Bucketty or Broke, or when walking in Dharug and Yengo National Parks. A 43km-long section that runs from Wisemans Ferry in the south to Mount Manning (near Bucketty) in the north is now referred to as the Old Great North Road because it is the most intact section of the original road that remains undeveloped. A 7km-long section of the Old Great North Road, which lies within Dharug National Park and is closed to motor vehicle traffic, was included on the World Heritage list in 2010. It sits among 11 places grouped under the banner of the Australian Convict Sites, which attained World Heritage status for being “the best surviving examples of large-scale convict transportation and the colonial expansion of European powers through the presence and labour of convicts”. This section of the road is managed by the New South Wales National Parks & Wildlife Service and can be explored on foot, with a 9km loop in Dharug National Park popular with families and history buffs. Before its World Heritage listing, the communities of Bucketty and Wollombi established the ‘Convict Trail Project’ in 1990 to promote the road as a museum of convict engineering. A website was developed to record the history of the road and its construction, while also helping to promote the various relics and attractions along the route.
