Nothing proclaims Christmas more in the Hunter Valley than the flick of one tiny switch at Hunter Valley Gardens! That one switch ignites millions of lights around the Gardens and reminds us all that it’s time to dust off that Christmas Spirit and start thinking about the festive season. Of course, Christmas Lights Spectacular is back bigger and more spectacular than even last year. When the HVG crew flick the switch on Friday 8 November, the kids are sure to want to rush out to see all their favourites, and this year’s displays do not disappoint! Later this month a visit to Morpeth Gallery will bring a light-show of a whole different variety when the delicate and ancient art of ‘fire-painting’ will be demonstrated to visitors. Thirteen other artists from around Australia will also be in the gallery painting in more traditional methods. These artists are the very best in their fields with some being world champions – making this an event not to be missed. Read more on page 11. This month we also visited Running Horse Wines in Pokolbin. With its unique ‘container’ Cellar Door and

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the historic Greta Army Camp and the 70th anniversary of the Greta Migrant Camp – a site that many may not even know exists, let alone its colourful history. In this month’s Step Back in Time feature, we learn about the camps and also several events, including photographic exhibitions, museum displays and historical talks being held to acknowledge the milestones. The vineyards are bursting with colour, and as the weather warms up daily, it’s a great time of the year to get out and sample all that our beautiful area has to offer both to visitors and to those of us who are lucky enough to live here.

The Intricate Art of

Painting with Fire Here’s something you probably haven’t seen before! When you visit Morpeth Gallery over the weekend of 23 and 24 November you witness ‘Fire-Painting,’ when artist Maegan Oberhardt from Victoria will use candles, wood and a blow torch, dancing the flames across her drawing to put carbon soot onto her drawings and then using various instruments, brushes, stones, knives and steel objects to remove parts of the carbon. Eventually, a portrait emerges from the carbon footprint left behind from the flame The delicate and lengthy process of painting with fire results in unique artworks that feature birds, animals and insects such as butterflies. This method, known as fumage, was created by cavemen and has since been used by Salvador Dali. The artist holds a flame close to the image drawn onto thick artist paper – and lets the fire blacken patterns onto the surface, before adding in extra details, using a paintbrush to create intricate portraits. “The soot lays on the surface of the thick paper. It is very fragile at that point in the process - so fragile that an insect could walk on the surface and it would leave their trace. I can then scratch the surface by just touching it with various types of tools. I like using real feathers to draw feathers when I am working on a bird,” said Maegan. Megan says that the process is only as dangerous as having a candle-lit dinner: “For me, spontaneity and chance are what make my creative process effective," she added. Thirteen other artists from around Australia will also be in the gallery painting in more traditional methods. These artists are the

very best in their fields with some being world champions, like John McCartin who has just won another eight medals in the American Art Awards which is contested by tens of thousands of artists from 63 countries around the world. While he is best known for paintings of cows he has also picked up the quinella in still life painting –coming 1st and 2nd in America. James Hough, who after his win in Canada for best wildlife in the competition, has had his images displayed for every month on the 2020 Australian Geographic Calendar. Natalie Parker, John Bradley, Werner Filipich, Max Mannix and John Vander also have 2020 Calendars available for sale on the day. Find Morpeth Gallery at 175 Swan St, Morpeth. ESCAPE THE TRANQUILITY FOR A DAY OF ACTION If the peace and tranquillity of the Hunter Valley are too much to bear for a whole weekend (said no-one ever!) then perhaps a day-trip to the bustling shores of Newcastle are in order. And if it’s action and noise you’re after, then there’s no better weekend to make the 40-minute drive than on the weekend of 23–24 November for the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 Supercars event. This year’s upcoming Coates Hire Newcastle 500 promises to be one of the most exciting on track with all 24 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship drivers vowing to put their best foot forward in a bid to stand atop the podium and look out over Wharf Road. Drivers to look out for include superstars Scott McLaughlan, Jamie Whincup, David Reynolds Shane van Ginsberg and fan-fave Simona De Silvestro. McLaughlin is undoubtedly at the top of his game right now. Meet the Maker

Lava

(a good cup of)

Coffee

WORDS Michelle Meehan

When it comes to brewing up a satisfying cup of coffee on the go, Christine and Richard “are here to serve” – literally. The Nulkaba couple are the smiling faces and steady hands behind one of the Hunter’s most delicious mobile barista-made coffee enterprises, Lava Coffee. Christine said it had been a joy to work alongside her husband in the successful side-venture, which they complete on top of their regular full-time jobs. “I’m a fitness specialist, and this whole coffee van idea came to me when attending seminars in Sydney for the industry I work in,” she said. “I often heard people say during the seminars ‘Gee I'd love a coffee’. Even though we were catered for at most of the seminars, you often felt like a coffee or refreshment during the lectures. “I attend many sporting events as well and hear the same thing at these venues too, so I started to look into the coffee van idea. “Many times, I discussed this idea with my husband and thought it would be good to do something together and still have my full-time job. “It took a good 18 months of looking around Sydney and our local area, and I was actually buying hay for my horses when I found that a guy in Newcastle was interested in selling his van.” After securing their mobile coffee headquarters, the couple set about fitting it out properly, while Christine also completed her barista training, as well as Food Authority and Food Supervisor’s courses. Since then the couple have been popping up everywhere from schools and workplaces to auctions and sporting events.

For more than six years they have also been warming the hands and stomachs of visitors to the monthly Handmade in the Hunter artisan markets. “We started selling coffee at Handmade in the Hunter Markets when Karen approached me at least six years or more ago ... and love this market,” Christine said.

We meet so many beautiful people from all over and international visitors as well and have had so many come back on the day and tell us our coffee was excellent.

“This, to me, is a great way to continue to serve great coffee and not ever become complacent with the running of the coffee van ... after all, we are there to serve!” Christine said the key to brewing up the best coffee was to start with the highest quality coffee (they prefer quality Arabica and their many beautiful blends). Clean water, a correctly set machine and the perfect milk temperature are also essential to not only create the tastiest cup but also meet important Food Authority standards. Stop by and taste the coffee for yourself at this month’s Handmade in the Hunter Markets, which will be held at Kevin Sobels Wines from 9am to 3pm on November 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30.

MILD to WILD At Aerohunter WORDS Michelle Meehan

What do you get when you mix an appreciation for aviation history with a heady dose of adrenaline-inducing aerobatics? A thrill of a lifetime in an ex-military warbird, delivered by some of the best pilots in the business. Located at Wirraway Aviation Museum, on the western side of Cessnock Airport, Aerohunter Adventure Flights offers thrill-seekers the chance to feel the rush of military manoeuvres and aerobatic drills, from basic loops, wingovers, Cuban eights and the ever-graceful stall turn, to the more advanced snap rolls, flicks, avalanches, vertical rolls and spinning. Those seeking something that’s more chill than thrill are also well catered for, with a series of “tactical reconnaissance missions” that allow you to enjoy a far more sedate aerial experience taking in the picturesque views of the countryside below. All the flights are conducted by expert RAAF and ace airshow pilots in authentic vintage ex-military planes. This includes a striking yellow Yakovlev Yak 52, an aerobaticsspecific plane first designed in the 1970s, which is still being manufactured and used by Air Forces all over the world. Featuring a super-charged M14P engine, with a whopping 360 horsepower, it can roll at over 180 degrees per second. The rare CAC Wirraway, which was built in 1942 and saw action as a ground support / reconnaissance aircraft against the Japanese during World War Two, is one of only three Wirraway aircraft in the world, while the priceless Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber, the only aircraft of its type flying in Australia, was the biggest single-engine aircraft that saw service in WWII. With an action-packed offering of flights that range “from mild to wild”, Aerohunter marketing manager Andy McLennan said it was amazing to see the range of people who came through their doors.

“What we really emphasise is that it doesn't have to be bonkers if you don't want it to be. We pace it to each individual’s tempo, how they want to go,” he said.

If they want us to twist and turn them, then we'll do it. If they prefer just to see how they go, we basically do one manoeuvre after another, level the wings and ask how they’re feeling and if they want some more

“If they want a break, then we just take them for a nice gentle flight out to the coast to check out the ocean, or if they live in the area, we can check out their house. ►

“We get everything from kids, 16 and older through to the adrenaline junkies, who are generally aged between 18 and 40. “But we also had a lady in her eighties who came in about two months ago and just wanted to go for a reconnaissance flight. Halfway through the flight she asked if she could do a couple of loops and rolls. We actually captured it all on video, and it’s a great video. She’s flying out over Newcastle, over Nobbys, and taking photos with her phone, and then by the end of the video, she’s doing loops and rolls and having a grand old time. “We get people you wouldn’t really expect to be adrenaline junkies, just wanting to give it a go. There’s no typical stereotype for someone who wants to have that thrill. You get so many different people from different walks of life.” Originally operating out of Maitland Airport at Rutherford, Aerohunter moved their base of operations out to the Wirraway Aviation Museum at Cessnock Airport two years ago. The museum, which is open from 9am to 4pm seven days a week, is free to visit and showcases a line-up of more than 20 vintage aircraft. Andy said not all the aircraft were there at any one time, as they were often spread across the country taking part in some of Australia’s biggest and best airshows. “Every time people come to visit there are different planes in here, which is good - it’s like a living, breathing aviation museum,” he said.

For people who aren’t flying, there’s still something interesting to do because we’ve got a museum curator providing historical insight into the use of these machines and the men and women involved

“There's no fee for the museum; it’s just donation box if people feel like it, and then hopefully they get inspired and want to jump up in a plane and go for a flight.

“People seem to have this nostalgia for planes, so to come in here and actually see them in the flesh, which is super rare because some of these planes just don’t exist Photo by Mark Jessop anywhere else anymore, and then to see one fly, it definitely captures the imagination.” For more information about Aerohunter Adventure Flights visit www.aerohunter.com.au ■

THE GATES At Leogate Estate WORDS Michelle Meehan

When Bill and Vicki Widin bought Brokenback Vineyard in 2007 with plans to create their own wine label, they knew they wanted to give the site a distinctive entrance. But the two sets of antique iron gates they sourced from a dealer in Ballina didn’t just make a striking welcoming statement – they set the tone for the entire property.

From providing the estate’s new name and logo to creating a sense of grandeur and opulence that would eventually be reflected in the various venues built on the site, the gates became a source of inspiration as the Tamworth cattle farmers put their mark on the historic Hunter Valley property. More than a decade later that dramatic iron entrance is still playing a role in the evolution of the estate, with the renowned on-site dining venue being renamed The Gates Restaurant earlier this year. It is the latest phase in the Widins’ successful journey to create not only a premium wine label but a prominent tourist destination as well.

yhv 18 | NOVEMBER 2019

“There were no buildings on the vineyard when we took over, but in anticipation of building a distinctive entrance to Brokenback Vineyard we sourced two sets of antique iron gates from a dealer in Ballina, Each gate displays a lion rampant in the centre. The lion became our logo, and we named the estate Leogate,” said Bill Widin. “We engaged a Cessnock-based home builder, Lance Murray, to build the cellar door, restaurant, and function centre complex on Brokenback Vineyard and were very pleased with the finished building, which we opened to the public in August 2012. “Vicki is endowed with a high ability for design and coordination, and we utilised these skills to create an ambience of quality and service in the cellar door, restaurant, and function centre. “We then engaged Lance Murray again to build the cottage, which is now named ‘The Gatehouse’ and, more recently, to build our residence on the vineyard.” Although Leogate Estate is primarily a working vineyard and winery, its location within easy reach of the main population centres of Sydney, Newcastle, and the Central Coast means they have been able to establish the property as a prominent tourist destination where they offer a wide range of products and services. “As a destination, Leogate Estate provides visitors with vineyard tours, winery tours, wine tastings, restaurant meals and platters, and tourist accommodation in ‘The Gatehouse’ cottage, while our function centre and courtyard is an attractive venue for weddings and corporate occasions,” said Bill. ►

“In order to achieve this position, we have the benefit and able assistance of an excellent operating staff of some 40 personnel.” The Pokolbin property has a long history in the Hunter, having been first planted in the late 1960's by a Rothbury Estate Syndicate led by one of the founding fathers of the modern Australian wine industry, Len Evans. Over the ensuing years, the vines have produced premium wines, which have been sold under a variety of labels. These days, however, Bill and Vicki’s vision has created a new lease on life not only for the Pokolbin property but for the former premier Angus producers as well. “By 2007, we had been producing pure Angus cattle in the Tamworth district for some 20 years at ‘Middlebrook Park’. Our Angus herds comprised 3,000 commercial breeders and 500 registered stud breeders,” Bill said. “We have always been keen on wine and, as farmers, (noting that there are operational similarities between agriculture and horticulture) we thought that it would be interesting to acquire a vineyard and produce our own grapes and wine. “After looking around the NSW wine districts, we decided upon the Lower Hunter Valley and identified Brokenback Vineyard in Pokolbin as our desired vineyard. “We made successful offers to the owners of the two halves into which the vineyard had been split and were able to re-amalgamate the 130 hectare (ha) property. “For the next ten years we worked between Tamworth and Pokolbin but in 2017, influenced by my decreasing ability to chase cows successfully, we sold our farm and cattle herds and moved full-time to Brokenback Vineyard.” While they may not have come from a viticultural background, the Widins used their own knowledge and experience on the land, and the expertise of others such as senior winemaker Mark Woods, to reinvigorate the property and build the successful wine brand they are known for today. “Brokenback Vineyard had been established as part of Len Evans’ Rothbury Group in the 1960's. The grape varietals then growing in 2007 covered 50ha and comprised Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz,” Bill said. “We have since added Verdelho, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, and Tempranillo. There is now some 75ha under vine. “Prior to our purchase Brokenback Vineyard had been maintained by contractors, so our first objective was to increase water storage and to improve the health of the vines.

“Our second objective was to plant additional vine blocks in order to achieve higher grape production and a level of viability while maintaining vine health. “As a generality, Hunter Valley vineyards can produce premium wines but are inherently low-yielding. Our farming background has been beneficial in resuscitating Brokenback Vineyard and promoting natural growth and sustainability. “At the time that we took over the vineyard, the former Tempus Two winery had ceased production. In October 2009 we purchased its winery plant and leased the premises from the Roche family. “While we made our own wine in the leased winery from the 2010 harvest onwards, we engaged Tamworth shed contractors, Eco Enterac, to build a new winery shed on Brokenback Vineyard. “This excellent new winery building was finished in 2012, and we relocated the plant and equipment to Brokenback Vineyard in time for the 2013 harvest. “During 2010 we also engaged Mark Woods as senior winemaker. Born and raised in Maitland, Mark is an excellent winemaker and is now on his 25th Hunter Valley vintage. “Mark has been an integral part of the operations and growth of Leogate Estate. We now produce some 20,000 cases of wine from (Continued next page) ►

(Continued) Brokenback Vineyard and also make the wines from a Mudgee district organic vineyard, which we purchased in 2016.” Since establishing Leogate Estate Wines, the Widins and Mark Woods have presided over a host of local, national and international accolades including the IWC Trophy for Best New Wine, wines poured on Qantas First and Business class flights. James Halliday’s renowned 2020 Australian Wine Companion awarded Leogate Estate Wines a red 5-star rating for the ninth consecutive year. Bill said a commitment to producing only the best wine possible has proved incredibly successful for the wine label.

Our highest award, arguably, was obtained in July 2014 when our 2011 ‘The Basin’ Reserve Shiraz won the James Rogers trophy for the world’s best new wine at London’s International Wine Challenge. This wine competition attracts some 12,000 entries annually.

“Our abiding success over the last five years for consecutive vintages has been the presence on Qantas International flights of our ‘Brokenback Vineyard’ Shiraz in Business Class and our ‘The Basin’ Reserve Shiraz in First Class. This has been a substantial boost to our business. “Our wine club is growing rapidly, and our export markets are expanding; we currently export to China, UK, USA, Hong Kong and Japan. However, we shall have to look to further increase wine production to keep up with demand. “Our overriding principle is that we only make wine when the season allows us to make good wine.

“For example, we did not make red wine from the 2012 vintage, which suffered heavy rains preceding harvest. Similarly, we did not make reserve red wines from the 2015 and 2016 vintages. “This philosophy restrains the business from time to time, but our customers are confident and comforted from the knowledge that the wines we make and sell are of the highest quality.” The Widins are also committed to serving food of the highest quality, with their popular on-site restaurant receiving rave reviews from diners. At the helm of The Gates is well-known head chef Adam Baldwin, who was born and trained in the UK but has been a Hunter Valley ►

Adrian Sparks of Mount Pleasant Wines

Mount Pleasant’s

Winning Streak Continues! Established in 1996 to build awareness of the quality of wines produced in NSW, the NSW Wine Awards have become an indicator of the growth and diversity of the NSW wine industry and the potential of new regions within New South Wales. This year’s annual ICC Sydney NSW Wine Awards, saw 16 expert judges from across Australia taste a record number of nearly 900 different wines over three days, resulting in 520 medal-winning wines, of which 72 were gold medal winners. Of the gold medal winners, 36 of them were from the Hunter Valley – shared between Audrey Wilkinson, Bimbadgen, De Iuliis Wines, First Creek Wines, Horner Wines, Kelman, Margan McGuigan, Mount Pleasant, Peppertree, RidgeView, Silkman Wines, Tamburlaine Organic Wines, Thomas Wines, Two Rivers Wines and Tyrrell's Wines. At the final awards ceremony held at Government House on 18 October, Mount Pleasant Wines 2018 Mountain D Shiraz championed over the others to take home the title of overall Best Dry Red and be awarded the ultimate title of 2019 NSW Wine of the Year and claim the NSW Governor’s Trophy for Best in Show.

Other Hunter Wines making the list of 2019 NSW Wine Awards Trophies were: • NSW DPI Trophy for Best Semillon – McGuigan 2018 Shortlist Semillon • Nexia Australia Trophy for Best Chardonnay – First Creek Wines 2018 Winemaker’s Reserve Chardonnay • Australia Post Trophy for Best Light Red – Margan 2019 Rosé and Bramble • Finlayson's Trophy for Best Shiraz – Mount Pleasant Wines 2018 Mountain D Shiraz • Nexia Australia Trophy for Best Red Blend – Tyrrell’s Vineyards 2018 Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet • Orora Trophy for Best Dry White – First Creek Wines 2018 Winemaker’s Reserve Chardonnay

This is the second year running that Mount Pleasant has been awarded the trophy for Best in Show, following the success of Old Paddock & Old Hill Shiraz 2017 at the 2018 awards ceremony. Commenting on the win, Mount Pleasant Chief Winemaker Adrian Sparks says, “We are over the moon with these results, and full credit is due to the hardworking Mount Pleasant team who have dedicated so much of their time to creating magnificent wines that represent the unique landscapes of the Hunter Valley. “Great vineyards are the first step in making great wines, and we are fortunate to be the custodians of some of Australia’s finest.” “The line-up of trophy-winning wines has codified what those in the know already knew to be true: that NSW offers the consumer a sensational range of wine styles that play to the strengths and diversity of the state’s wine regions,” said Chair of judges, Dave Brookes. “New South Wales’ enviable purple patch of great vintages and world-class winemaking offers wine drinkers outstanding wines that span the spectrum from precise, focused sparkling wines through to cellar-worthy Shiraz and all bases in between. “Many other Australian wine states should rightly be envious of New South Wales’ diversity and quality.” Brookes reserved special praise for Mount Pleasant, saying that “the quality and pedigree of this producer’s wine range was on full display again in this year’s wine awards.” “While pure-of-fruit and delicious today, this wine will also continue to improve for many years with careful cellaring and is a wine that is bound to delight fans of the medium-bodied Shiraz that the Hunter Valley is justly famous for.” The awards continue an exceptional show season for the Mount Pleasant team who recently took home 27 medals and trophies at the Hunter Valley Wine Show including gold for the 2018 Mountain D Shiraz. To cap it all off, Adrian Sparks was also awarded the title of Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year.

A Tempting Selection at

THE WOOD RESTAURANT

To many, Andy and Janet Wright need no introduction. They are the husband and wife team that has presided over The Cellar Restaurant in Pokolbin these past 18 years – making it one of the finest restaurants around. Now their new venture The Wood Restaurant is one of the most talked about hot spots in the Hunter. Born in the UK, Andy grew up fully immersed in the restaurant scene in London, working at various hotels and restaurants as well as being the Head Chef at the House of Lords before deciding to move to Australia in 1996. Once in Australia, Andy took on the Sous Chef role at the Nikko Hotel, Darling Harbour before moving to the Hunter Valley where he worked as the Head Chef at Roberts Restaurant and later Pipette at Cypress Lakes and Seasons Restaurant at Hunter Valley Gardens. He and Janet then became part owners of The Cellar Restaurant, before taking over entirely in 2005. After almost 18 years, when the opportunity came to sell The Cellar Restaurant and take on The Wood restaurant at Brokenwood Wines new state of the art cellar door facility, the culinary couple jumped at the chance, with Andy as executive chef and Janet managing front-ofhouse. Catering for up to 90 guests, the Wood is in a word ‘unique’ with a menu that is focused on contemporary Australian dishes cooked in the restaurant’s wood-fired oven and with local produce where possible.

The refreshingly diverse and well thought out menu provides for nibbles, entrees, mains, salads, sides and desserts, with a strong emphasis on locally sourced seafood and fish. But, there's also a selection of poultry, red meat and vegetarian dishes. Something for everyone. Menu favourites include the creamy centred, crisp coated salt cod fritters with tarragon mayo – perfect for nibbling on with your favourite glass of wine. Amongst the choice of entrees is Queensland prawns with preserved lime curd, sumac and pomegranate and the whisky cured salmon, with fresh raw razor back prawns, horseradish yoghurt and pickled shimeji mushrooms. The tempting selection of mains include a choice of Market fish in an Asian broth flavoured with soy, ginger, garlic and shiitake mushrooms; 250g Wagyu 6+ sirloin with smoked bone marrow with hand-cut chips, café de Paris butter and jus and Andy's signature dish the eight-hour slow-cooked Great Southern lamb shoulder with roast kumara, pickled shallots and grains. Open for lunch daily and dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, The Wood is by far one of the most central and most convenient spots in the Hunter to go for a meal and is up there with the best in regional dining.

Running Horse Wines Wine, Views and Rave Reviews WORDS Quentin von Essen Many of us are fortunate if we are ever able to follow our passion – let alone work in a profession we are passionate about. But for ex-jockey turned wine-maker David Fromberg, being able to follow and work with his two passions – training racehorses and winemaking is as good as it gets. Both requiring a significant amount of passion, skill and patience. As a winemaker passionate about creating wines, David opened his cellar door for his Running Horse Wines label in 2018 - almost two decades after he first planted vines on his family’s 56-acre property at Broke. Now open to the public these past 12 months, Running Horse Wines is located within the picturesque surrounds of the Broke Fordwich region and with a such a beautiful landscape around him, David knew his cellar door had to be something special so that visitors could appreciate and experience the wonderful views while enjoying his wine. Designed by his friend and architect David Kaunitz, the cellar door has been constructed using six elevated shipping containers that have been artfully repurposed with extensive use of glass to open them up to the surrounding landscape overlooking the iconic Yellow Rock Escarpment. The interior is equally as impressive with timber, glass, copper and steel featuring prominently, with a mass display of wine bottles creating an eye-catching feature along one wall. The true centrepiece of the space, however, is the gleaming glass-topped bar, which incorporates a series of light panels that help to showcase the colour and clarity of the wine being tasted. What’s most impressive about Running Horse Wines, however, is what is in the bottles. David is one of the few vignerons in the region specifically producing aged wines, with his range including varieties of Semillon, Verdelho, Rose and Shiraz.

At the cellar door, we offer vertical tastings – tasting wines that are 12-years-old and are still drinking wonderfully but have real bottle-aged characters coming through. Semillons that are 13 years old that still look like they’re six years old, or Verdelhos that are the same, they just age fantastically well.

“The 2005, 2006 and 2011 Shiraz are particularly good right now, offering a classic, spicy Hunter bouquet that complements the smooth palate of cherries and subtle mint, with silky tannins and hints of chocolate and vanilla from 18 months maturation in new French Oak,” said David. The uniqueness and quality of the wines at Running Horse Wines is fast catching on with visitors to the Cellar Door posting exceptional reviews on travel review sites such as Trip Advisor which has a 100% "excellent" review rating with comments that include "Best Wine in the Hunter Region", "Unique Tasting Room and a Wonderful Host", "Superlative", "A Must Visit", "Best Cellar Door", "The Most Fun I’ve Ever Had at a Cellar Door", "You Must Visit and Taste These Wines" and my favourite "We Love Dave!" Why not take the opportunity to visit Running Horse Wines and find out for yourself?

Morpeth WORDS Michelle Meehan

It has a proud history as one of New South Wales’ most significant river ports, and a rich architectural heritage that has been classified by the National Trust. But the Morpeth of today is about more than just its past – it’s a vibrant dining and retail precinct loved by locals and visitors alike. Filled with boutiques and businesses that you won’t find anywhere else, the bustling riverside village has worked hard to establish itself as a destination in its own right, where people come to shop, socialise or just spend time soaking up its unique atmosphere. Local business owner Lisa Simmonds-Webb said the way people view Morpeth has evolved over time as the town has expanded its appeal to encompass a melting pot of offerings that are unique, boutique and delicious. “Most of the original buildings have now been restored, and we have a real mix of retail offerings and eateries, everything from antiques and art galleries to upmarket boutiques, fine jewellery, vintage shops, handcrafted products and fantastic food to both enjoy whilst you are in town or take home with you,” she said. “I think that what really sets us apart is that we really are boutique, delicious and unique - you will find things in Morpeth that you truly would not expect. “We don’t do chain store or mass-produced. A lot of our retailers pride themselves on the fact that their products are unique in one way or another. They may be locally made from local produce or imported directly from another continent to ensure individuality. “Morpeth offers the opportunity to see world-class artists and bespoke fashion, as well as the most amazing Fairy Shop (perfect for

yhv 26 | NOVEMBER 2019

little fairies). You will see shops in Morpeth that you just will not see duplicated anywhere else in Australia or maybe even the world.” Of course, much of Morpeth’s charm still flows from its history and heritage, whether it’s the cobblestone alleyways filled with hidden treasures and places to explore or the beautifully restored architectural gems that house these unique businesses. Lisa said Morpeth firmly embraces its heritage, with plenty of opportunities for visitors to sink their teeth into the history of the town, as well as its gourmet food offerings! “I think that as Australians we are proud of our history and Morpeth has that in being the starting place for so many iconic Australian businesses like Arnott’s Biscuits, Soul Pattinson, Brambles, Sims Metals and Goldsborough Mort,” she said. “In its heyday, Morpeth had no less than 22 hotels, 12 wharves where the tall ships docked and brought both their cargo and people to the town, and there were also five railways stations, one of which is still intact but now not operating. “The fantastic thing is that while not all of the hotels and wharves exist anymore, a lot of the original buildings are still highly operational with their original features taking pride of place. “A trip to the Morpeth Museum is a must if you are looking up family histories or just want to know more about Morpeth in general.” Local business owners such as Trevor Richards from Campbell’s Store, who was awarded an OAM this year in recognition of his tireless work promoting Morpeth as a tourist destination, are the heart and soul of the village and its evolution. During the past few years they have banded together to run joint promotions, competitions or events under the banner of “It Must Be Morpeth”. ►

This includes the popular It Must Be Christmas in Morpeth competition, which is once again offering visitors the chance to win $50,000 simply by spending $20 or more in any of the participating businesses during the promotional period. The competition is on now and will run until 5pm on December 14. One winner, drawn on December 15, will be given the chance to win the $50,000 grand prize. Lisa said promotions such as this one reflected the collaborative nature of the town’s traders. “The majority of Morpeth businesses work together as we really want everyone who visits our town to have the best experience possible, and to return and bring their friends,” she said. “I think that our promotions are designed to celebrate traditions but also to promote fun, to preserve the traditional aspects of family/ leisure time and appreciate the finer things in life. “We strongly believe in our town and our history, and we want Morpeth to be a place where the best memories are made. Even if you are just popping in for coffee or leisurely strolling the streets.”

WE BELIEVE IN THE SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE. THEY JUST NEED TO BE AMAZING.

Olive Tree Twilight Market – November 23

The Cellar Restaurant delivers modern contemporary Australian cuisine, utilising local and seasonal quality ingredients. Dine in our indoor garden setting or outside in the courtyard.

An exciting collective of over 80 artists, designers and street food stalls will converge on Maitland Regional Art Gallery for the highly anticipated yearly Olive Tree Christmas Twilight Market on Saturday, November 23rd. The final date of Olive Tree for 2019 will feature a Christmas theme, and give visitors access to a wide range of beautifully crafted contemporary products, all in an exciting market setting. “There are so many reasons to shop local – visitors can discover unique gift ideas, and be assured that they can pick-up, small-batch ethically created handmade goods. Each purchase means you are supporting local artists and championing creative talent. There are the added bonuses of finding a Christmas gift that you know will be unique on Christmas Day, that you will be contributing to the local economy and making a stand against mass-produced imported goods,” Founder, Justine Gaudry said. The Christmas Twilight Market will include free Christmas Craft activities for kids from 4-6pm, roving street performers, an exciting live music line-up under the gallery trees, and once the shopping and sampling are done, visitors can bring along a picnic rug, and join friends and family, for an early dinner from street food purveyors. “We are excited to welcome the communities of Maitland and the Hunter Valley for a fun evening, and community celebration of creativity. It's a great opportunity to spend the evening with friends at one of Maitlands best cultural offerings. Not only can customers experience the market, but they can visit the gallery by night, which is a fantastic opportunity.” Ms Gaudry said that limited positions remained available and applications were still open for the emerging artist stall start-up package, "We encourage local artists and designers to apply to join our creative community on the night. We are particularly keen to feature artists from Maitland and the Hunter." For more information visit www.theolivetreemarket.com.au

Sip your way through Spring with

Sips to Savour WORDS Quentin von Essen

According to the Ancient Calendar, Spring is considered the first season of the year - the beginning of another cycle which brings with it a sense of renewal and creativity. Spring is also the time when everything lightens up – the weight of our clothing, the type of food we eat and the type of drinks we drink. So, as we ditch the clothes and change up our dishes, we also lighten our palates with some fresh and fragrant drops. Think crisp, refreshing white wines —lighter, fruit and acid-driven dry or slightly off-dry whites served well chilled. These are wines that are compatible with salads, shellfish, seafood, pasta, fresh cheese, antipasto and white meats. With the warmer weather, you may well be thinking of shelving your reds… Don’t! Many red wines have qualities that work well in the warmer weather, lighter, with lower alcohol levels, higher acidity and subtle tannins. Chilled red wines can be excellent on a sunny day. Many Australian Pinot Noirs can be lightly chilled without losing personality and character, and grapes such as Sangiovese and Grenache that originated in Mediterranean climates, are just perfect for drinking in warmer weather. To help you reach for the perfect bottle every time, we’ve compiled a selection of wines to get you through the season. Sauvignon Blanc, with its crisp, herbal edge and refreshing acidity, earns a thumbs up from many wine drinkers, but there are so many other great spring wines from which to choose. With or without food, Hunter Valley Semillon is the wine to drink this spring. Naturally low in alcohol and almost devoid of residual sugar, Hunter Semillon is the ideal partner for the season's lighter fish and seafood meals. When young, it's great with fresh oysters, cooked prawns and white-fleshed fish. With some age, it is wonderful when served with smoked trout or salmon, roast chicken, lobster with burnt butter and other flavoursome dishes. With its fresh, tropical fruit characters, un-oaked style, and sheer drinkability, Australian Verdelho is very much the crowd-pleaser and perfect when served with spicy Asian cuisines including Thai, Vietnamese and Malaysian dishes, or simply enjoyed on its own on a warm day. While it is widely grown throughout Australia, the Hunter Valley consistently produce some of the best examples of this variety.

Chardonnay – the diva of differences. To beat the warm weather, choose an unoaked Chardonnay without the dense, buttery texture of malolactic fermentation. It’s a simple and effective way to compete with the higher temperatures and superb with shellfish such as crab and prawns, grilled fish, chicken dishes, pasta and risotto. As a tangy, dry white wine that is perfectly light and fresh with fruity flavours such as pear, apple and melon, Pinot Gris is a warmer weather wine through and through and can be paired with a variety of food with ease. A glass of Sparkling Wine is always appropriate, regardless of the time of year (or time of day). But with the arrival of Spring, a glass of bubbly feels almost mandatory. The wine’s temperature and the bubbles themselves make it a refreshing, cooling beverage, and its high acidity makes it ideally suited to lighter foods such as ham, salads, chilled soups and a variety of seafood. Rosé is undeniably the first choice for many wine lovers when the weather starts to warm up, and it can be found everywhere - especially when seafood such as tuna or swordfish is on the menu. This wine is also the perfect partner to barbecued prawns, Moreton Bay bugs and eggplant skewers. Pinot Noir is, without a doubt, the first go-to red wine on a warm day and superb with duck, mushrooms, cured meats and charcuterie as well as seafood. Easy drinking, fresh and vibrant, Grenache is one of the more seasonable varieties and is very trendy at the moment. Best served with wood-fired pizza, olives and warm nights, Grenache is a wine very much reflective of the Mediterranean climate in which it originates. This Spring, make sure you try something new – a variety you have never tried before. No matter where you are or what you are doing, with good wine, good food and in the company of good friends - you just can’t go wrong.

The Sauvignon Blanc Frizzante is all that and more. The ultimate wine for fun in the sun. TASTING Lively fruit flavours of passionfruit and fresh citrus coupled with refreshing bubbles, providing a crisp clean fruity finish. CELLARING Best enjoyed young and fresh.

2019 2 Fat Cows Rosé | $22 From Lucy's Run own single vineyard Merlot grapes, this beaut rosé was named after our two lovely, but hefty, bovines – Thelma and Louise! Like our two 'girls', this wine is fat and juicy, full of red berry lusciousness and showing light hints of rose petal and honey – voluptuous! TASTING Beautifully Spring fresh, our Rosé is mediumbodied but delicate on the palate, with light strawberries and cream flavours also emerging. CELLARING Will happily cellar for the next few years, but why wait...

2018 Shiraz Pressings | $45 A Big and Gutsy style Hunter Valley red. The ripe fruit characters show pepper and spice with good tannins having been matured in quality French Oak, sealed with natural cork and hand waxed to ensure great cellaring. TASTING This big Hunter Red has a fabulous deep red colour, with ripe fruit, pepper and spice on the palate. The oak and tannin characters give the palate complexity and linger perfectly in the mouth. A rich and well balanced red wine. CELLARING Enjoy now or will cellar well for 12–15 years.

2017 Saphira Sangiovese | $35 First class, hand-picked fruit, aged in French oak barrels for over 12 months before bottling. Aromas of cherries, blackberries and a touch of liquorice, and sweet leather. TASTING The taste of this wine is firm yet elegant, reflecting the aroma with dark cherries, plums and savoury cranberries – with a touch of spice. Good structure and crisp acidity finish. CELLARING Drink now until 2025.

2019 Belebula Nebbiolo Rosé | $25 Barolo and Barbaresco are the premier Nebbiolo spots in the world. But now there are other places that make great Nebbiolo wines. Nebbiolo is an incredibly fussy variety to grow, flowering early, ripening late, and can struggle to ripen fully. Pokolbin Estate’s Nebbiolo Rosé is grown at Belebula Estate on Old North Rd. TASTING A traditional dry European style Rosé. Kissed with wild strawberries and a twist of Campari on the palate. Finishing with savoury fresh acidity, lingering and dry. CELLARING Good cellaring potential but with age the colour does become deeper and rustic.

The owners of the Australian Alpaca Barn (Marion and Michael Jack) run their own herd of alpaca in the beautiful Lambs Valley area of the Hunter as well as sourcing wool from other farms in the Hunter region. Their farm, Jacamar Alpacas, started with a small herd of only ten alpacas in 1997, but since then the herd has grown to almost 100. The couple has also aligned themselves with the top manufacturers of alpaca product in Peru, allowing them to offer discerning shoppers a comprehensive and international range of alpaca products made from the distinctive Peruvian Alpaca fibre. The Australian Alpaca Barn has stores located in the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and Sydney, but in the Hunter Valley, we are especially lucky to have scored three stores, with a shop at Hunter Valley Gardens, a second at Peppers Creek Village and a third at the historic township of Morpeth. “Alpaca wool is luxuriously soft and lightweight, but is still very warm,” says Marion Jack, who owns the stores alongside husband Michael.

Luxuriously Soft

Local Alpaca Products The Australian Alpaca Barn is a family-owned business that was originally established to sell and promote Australian Alpaca products made from alpaca fibre grown in Australia and manufactured by the strategic partners of Australian Alpaca Fleece Limited. Since then, both the business and the industry as a whole have grown exponentially, with the store now also specialising in the quality alpaca products made from alpaca fibre grown and manufactured not only in Australia but also from New Zealand and Peru.

When people come into the store, they are amazed not only with the tactility of the Alpaca product but also the range of items available. Alpaca wool is stronger and more durable than most other natural fibres, and it’s hypoallergenic too, so if traditional wool makes you itch, alpaca is the ideal alternative.

Within the store, visitors can savour the quality of alpaca coats, sweaters, shawls, scarves, gloves, beanies, socks, throw rugs, quilts, bedding, pillows, blankets, knitting yarn, alpaca teddies, alpaca silver jewellery and more. All three shops are open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm. For more information and to shop online visit www.australianalpaca.com

The Deck Café As a region, the Hunter is a culinary destination like no other and features a diverse and abundant dining experience ranging from charming cafes to hatted restaurants, which proudly showcase the regions passionate and talented chefs, regionally sourced produce and award-winning wines. The Hunter’s reputation as a wine region is unquestionable, but it’s also home to some of the most creative chefs and edgy restaurants and cafes, making their presence felt on the regional culinary stage. A local chef that has been kicking goals since he opened his first restaurant in the Hunter 12 years ago is Matt Dillow. The father of two has earned a reputation, not only as a cooking maestro but as a savvy business operator who over the past 12 years has had no less than three highly regarded dining venues under his belt which were very popular amongst local, interstate and international visitors. Having sold two of the restaurants (The Verandah and Twine), Matt has retained the Deck Café at Gartelmann Wines in Lovedale and continues to host his popular food, wine and produce tours to Tasmania, New Zealand and Tuscany each year. Aptly named, The Deck Café is a stylish restaurant-style cafe, in a beautiful setting - complete with a large elevated deck overlooking a picturesque dam. The perfect place to start the day, have a break from a morning of wine tasting or to chill out with family and friends. Think breakfasts with house-made fluffy pancakes with a choice of toppings that include caramelised banana, passionfruit butter and fresh strawberries or Belgium chocolate hazelnut sauce and vanilla ice cream; ham and Persian feta and asparagus omelette with semi-dried tomato tapenade and sourdough; eggs benedict with herbroasted field mushrooms or beetroot and gin cured salmon gravlax and one of Matt’s favourites - grilled sourdough, smashed avocado, roasted wild mushrooms, grilled halloumi and heirloom pesto tomatoes. The lunch menu is just as delicious and includes The Deck's mezze plate(s), a choice charcuterie plates, wood roast salmon, beer-battered snapper with potato chips, braised lamb shoulder, Spanish pulled pork and bean cassoulet pie, house-made beef lasagne, a range of salads and a selection of delicious The Deck Burgers. Top it all off with a glass of Gartelmann wine or a Piazza Dora coffee. The Deck Café is open seven days for Breakfast and Lunch. For more information visit www.deckcafelovedale.com.au

STEP BACK IN TIME

Greta Army & Migrant Camp WORDS Michelle Meehan

A tiny rural town on the outskirts of one of Australia’s oldest producing wine regions seems about as far from the battlescarred fields of World War Two as you can possibly get. But, unbeknownst to the casual observer today, the Hunter Valley town of Greta actually played a significant role in both Australia’s war effort and the resettlement of thousands of immigrants who left their wartorn homes in Europe for the chance to start a new life on the other side of the world. Two months after Australia entered into the war on September 3, 1939, the Federal Government compulsorily acquired 2930 acres of grazing land outside of the township of Greta with the aim of repurposing it for use by the Australian Army. Less than a month later the Greta Army Camp began training soldiers from the 6th Division 2nd Australian Imperial Force (AIF), gradually expanding throughout the war into what became one of Australia’s largest military training camps. Around 60,000 soldiers passed through its gates before the war finally ended in 1945, with much of the Greta camp then being returned to grazing lands. A section of the property remained under military use, playing a part in training the Australian troops that formed part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) that served with distinction to maintain control of Japan following the war, under the command of US General Douglas MacArthur. In 1949 the camp was transferred to the Department of Immigration for use as a reception and training centre for migrants fleeing from post-war Europe. Various centres such as these were set up across Australia, to provide a place where immigrants could learn some English while they looked for a job. Between 1949 and 1960, the Greta Migrant Camp became the first Australian home for more than 100,000 migrants from 17 countries, including Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Italy, Greece, Macedonia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria and Netherlands. At one point Greta was one of Australia’s largest migrant camps, housing 9000 people at a time.

In 1962 the Army resumed control of the camp, before selling the site and its buildings 18 years later. The property was purchased at auction in 1980 by the Windt family and remains privately owned. In 1981 Cessnock Council renamed the section of road between Talga Road and Greta Railway Station, which runs past the former camp. ‘Camp Road’ remains the only local tribute established in honour of the historic site, a fact that has attracted criticism and condemnation from many people, including former Camp residents. Despite the lack of a monument on the site, the history of the two camps has been captured in a number of ways over the years. Historian Christopher Keating has written the only book on the Greta Army Camp and the Greta Migrant Camp, while writer Alek Schulha, who was born at the camp to Yugoslav and Ukrainian parents, has spent decades researching and collecting the stories of the people who called the Greta Migrant Camp home. With this year marking the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Greta Army Camp and the 70th anniversary of the Greta Migrant Camp, several events, including photographic exhibitions, museum displays and historical talks, have been held throughout the Hunter to acknowledge the milestones. This month, a special two-day event will also be held at the Camp Road property to commemorate the anniversaries. Presented by the Central Hunter Business Chamber, Hunter Multicultural Communities Inc and its sponsors, the family-friendly weekend will feature a military parade, air show and pipe and brass bands, a kids’ zone with a jumping castle, balloons and more, as well as a variety of cultural dance ensembles, international food stalls and local market stores. The event will kick off on Saturday, November 9 with a full military parade with the Royal Australian Navy Band, Defence Force personnel, Veterans and dignitaries, followed by the official opening by GovernorGeneral of Australia, General David Hurley. Other highlights over the two days will include flyovers of military aircraft including a C-130 Hercules – heavy-lift aircraft, MRH-90 Taipan Helicopter and Tiger Moths, as well as displays of ex-military vehicles, infantry and light horse drills, and the Hunter Multicultural onsite museum, historical talks and displays. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.gretaarmycamp.com.au. Tickets will also be available at the gate during the November 9 and 10 event.
