Oct–Nov
Located in one of the most picturesque areas of the Hunter Valley, Mount View, boutique winery Briar Ridge calls itself 'classically radical' and is quickly gaining a reputation for innovative winemaking. Underpinning this innovation is a foundation in tradition, with well-established vines that enjoy a long history, having been planted 50 years ago this year.
Winner of the 2022 Young Achiever of the Year at the Hunter Legend Awards, Alex Beckett, is steering a bright future for the winery, and this month we caught up with Alex to find out about the melding together of the old and the new that has become the hallmark of Briar Ridge wines. Read more on page 14.
It may be 'Wine Country', but the region doesn't just cater to wine connoisseurs or foodies – it's also the perfect destination for a familyfriendly holiday, with ample activities and plenty of fresh air to keep the kids both entertained and healthy!
This is undoubtedly true at 4 Pines at Hunter Resort, where families are very well catered for, and parents can relax knowing that there are not only kid-friendly menu options and stacks of space to run about but a whole host of activities to keep
the littlies happy like pony rides, Segway fun and farm animals to feed! Read more on page 18.
Concert season kicks off this month with the world's most famous and beloved classical music artist, Maestro Andrea Bocelli, heading our way along with Delta Goodrem, a 70-piece orchestra and a 60-person choir! Closely followed by the rescheduled Crowded House tour, the next month will see Wine Country in full concert mode. Tickets are still available for both shows as we go to print; visit page 12 for more information on how to get your hands on some.
Spring and Summer are the two favourite seasons of the year and certainly the best time to visit the Hunter Valley with the vines at their glorious best and the warmer weather ideal for spending more time outside and dining al fresco.
Rather than sticking to the same old favourites, changing the wines we drink with the seasons is an opportunity to experience a broader range of varietals and pairings. So why not broaden your horizons and check out our favourite wines for Spring on page 29.
Enjoy!

CONCERT SEASON
KICKS OFF!
The world’s most famous and beloved classical music artist, Maestro Andrea Bocelli, is heading our way this month with a 70-piece orchestra and a 60-person choir to perform at Hope Estate in the Hunter Valley on 29 October. The national tour includes just five cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and our own Hunter Valley.
Drawing from his extensive back catalogue – which spans almost three decades – Maestro Bocelli is set to uplift audiences with a stunning selection of soul-stirring arias, enduring love songs and beloved crossover hits.
“The Australian tour dates are not just concerts to me; they are opportunities for us to immerse ourselves in musical beauty on a grand scale,” Andrea Bocelli says.
“For these upcoming shows, my aim is to restore some serenity and enter gently into people’s hearts. If my previous tours are anything to go by, I’ve always found Australian audiences to be passionate, enthusiastic and friendly. I genuinely appreciate my generous and engaged Australian fanbase and am proud to be even a tiny part of the soundtrack to so many people’s lives.”
“With its ability to inspire and heal, music is its own language, and I never tire of performing these songs – even the ones I’ve been singing in concert for more than 25 years! – because they move me so deeply. Music is essential nourishment for the human spirit. What better way to celebrate the joys of life than through song!”
Award-winning Australian singer-songwriter and musician Delta Goodrem AM will perform with Andrea and solo at the winery show, along with Bocelli’s children Virginia and Matteo, who also feature on his upcoming Christmas album, A Family Christmas. For tickets and more information, visit www.hopeestate.com.au.

PM Plaster Craft
This month we catch up with stall-holder Stacey West from PM Plastercraft. You'll find Stacey, along with all the other awesome local makers and creators at Handmade in the Hunter Markets – see page 5 for details.
Can you please tell us a bit about PM Plastercraft? How did you come up with the idea?
We are a family business based in Singleton, making plaster characters to paint. As a child, I often painted plaster casts at the local shopping centre (I still have a dolphin figurine I painted as a child!), but when I moved to the Hunter Valley in 2001, I couldn’t find anything similar here. So while I was on maternity leave, my husband Che and I decided to start our own business by experimenting with making plaster characters to paint, and PM Plastercraft was born!
How long have you been running PM Plastercraft - and how did you start?
We have been running PM Plaster Craft for four years now. When naming our business, we wanted to steer clear of the plaster fun name and try to be a little different, so we named our business after our children, Paxton and Micah (PM). It hasn't been the easiest road running a business while sleep deprived in the early years, but we are a well-oiled machine now.
What types of products do you sell? What is your top-selling product? Who is your typical customer?
Products we make from Plaster of Paris include gift packs, party favours, bulk plaster painting packs, and name packs, all of which contain Non-Toxic acrylic paints and a paintbrush. These items are mainly for children, but we do often find some parents will purchase them for themselves as well to join in the fun with the kids.
We make our moulds with a 3D printer and various mould-making methods. Thanks to a customer at Handmade in the Hunter markets from Sydney, we now have a naughty plaster available to paint for Hen's nights which will be available on our website shortly. The customer had asked if we could make this special plaster, and of course, we did!
Our top selling product is definitely our plaster party favours. The parents love them because they aren't lollies, and the children can take them home and paint later.
We heard that you are catering for eco-conscious customers. In what way?
Over the years, we have seen a trend in customers wanting more sustainable packaging, and we also preferred a more eco-conscious product. We have tried to evaluate every aspect of our product and packaging when shipping to be as eco-friendly as possible. We reuse shipping boxes and packing where possible and use compostable shipping mailers for smaller orders. We have swapped our foam trays for cardboard, and we give our customers the option to swap out plastic paint brushes and cellophane bags for bamboo paint brushes and a calico bag which is my favourite.
What do you like most about Handmade in the Hunter Markets?
We love that it's like a family. We all feel each other's ups and downs; we cheer each other on when we are busy, encourage each other when we aren't as busy, and watch each other's stalls when we need a quick break. We love that we can bring along our children with us as well while we are working.

MELDING TOGETHER THE OLD AND THE NEW
WORDS LIANE MORRIS
Located in one of the most picturesque areas of the Hunter Valley, Mount View, boutique winery Briar Ridge calls itself ‘classically radical’ and is quickly gaining a reputation for innovative winemaking. Winner of the 2022 Young Achiever of the Year at the Hunter Legend Awards, Alex Beckett, is steering a bright future for the winery. This innovation is firmly supported by a foundation in tradition and well-established vines that enjoy a long history. It is these vines, planted 50 years ago in 1972, that the winery is celebrating this year.
The history of the winery began in 1972 when Murray Robson planted the first vines - Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, some Portuguese Port varieties described as Merlot, a small amount of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, in what was then called Squire Vineyard, and by 1975 the wines produced from these vines were already winning gold medals. In 1987 John Davis purchased the property because, as a geologist, he recognised the unique climate, topography and soil that the area offered winemaking.
As the original owner wrote, “Mount View is a tiny valley over 600 feet above the surrounding plains. This height has created a microclimate that avoids temperature extremes and allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly over a longer period, thus assisting the aromatics and flavour depth of all wines.”
In 1988 the Davis family reoriented the rows and replanted the vineyard. In 1991 Hunter Valley legendary winemaker Karl Stockhausen joined Briar Ridge, releasing his first vintage in the same year, which won the best wine in show at the Hunter Valley Wine Show for his Shiraz.
Fast forward to 2022, and at the recent 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards, Briar Ridge was presented with not only the trophy for Other Whites (and Blends) Wine of the Year with the 2021 Limited Release Albariño but also a red star winery rating. A red star rating is awarded to an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity. They must have at least two wines rated at 95 points or above and have held a 5-star rating for the previous three years. Briar Ridge has the 2021 Single Vineyard ‘Dairy Hill’ Semillon with 97 points,

In addition, the 2021 ‘Briar Hill’ Chardonnay also won the Hunter Valley Best of Region trophy in the James Halliday Chardonnay and Cabernet Challenge, which is a competition and celebration of Australia’s incredible regional attributes. Tasting notes say that the wine exhibits “pure green apple and lime fruit aromas alongside concentrated lemon curd flavours building into a long persistent creamy textured finish.” The winery has also been awarded a gold medal at the recent Hunter Valley Wine Show for the 2013 Stockhausen Signature Semillon.
Currently studying in the Institute of Masters of Wine Study Program (one of only 13 students in the country), winemaker Alex Beckett is passionate about his innovative work at Briar Ridge and excited about the recognition he has been receiving.
“It was an absolute honour to have our Hunter Valley Albariño be recognised as the best other white in Australia by James Halliday and the Wine Companion Tasting Team recently,” said Alex. “The last few years have seen our team put tireless work into evolving the viticulture and winemaking behind our wines, so to have that quality recognised is a wonderful feeling. Albariño is fast becoming to us, one of the key varietals for our region and we look forward to seeing the variety’s future success around Australia.”
“It’s the melding together of the old and the new that makes Briar Ridge so interesting – it’s certainly why I enjoy doing what I do. I have the creative freedom to play and experiment and build upon that tradition, respecting what has been done but also improving it as we move on.”
Indeed, Alex is continually refining his craft. He is currently working at Weingut Gunderloch to assist them with their German vintage. Based in Nackenheim in the Rheinhessen wine region of Germany, Weingut Gunderloch is a sixth-generation family estate known for its Riesling wines. Alex loves Riesling.
Halliday Tasting Team member, wine writer and judge Ned Goodwin MW is quoted as saying, “Briar Ridge’s example [of Fiano] bares the textural signature of winemaker Alex Beckett, a fan of contemporary German Riesling and Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. His Fiano is all glazed quince, nashi pear and peach pith, with a pungent herbal undercarriage of wild fennel and pepper… Even more exciting is Beckett’s deft touch with Albariño.… Beckett’s expression is possibly the single most exciting white wine I have tasted for the Wine Companion to date. At least this past year.”
The Briar Ridge wines range from Hunter classics in the premium Single Vineyard, and Stockhausen ranges to the contemporary innovations of the Limited Release and Varietal ranges with literally something that will appeal to every palate on the cellar door menu. Fruit is farmed on-site and also sourced from estate-grown vineyards in Orange, the Hilltops and Wrattonbully in South Australia.
The Single Vineyard wines are a true expression of the Mount View terroir, produced in limited quantities and only made when the vintage year has delivered optimum growing conditions. Limited Release wines represent the best in varietal and regional characters each year and are where you will find unique blends and traditional and emerging wine F

varieties. The Stockhausen
is crafted in memory of legendary Hunter winemaker Karl Stockhausen and showcases classic Hunter Valley wine styles. The Varietal range features fresh regional flavours and includes the Fumé Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, The Dam Verdelho, ColdSoaked Cabernet and Old Vines Shiraz.
Not content with developing new varieties of wine, the team at Briar Ridge are preparing to launch an ‘unexpectedly colourful’ range of gin, vodka and vermouth, distilled using locally sourced products and Briar Ridge grape spirit.
Briar Ridge General Manager Michael Bentley says the idea came about after bushfire smoke affected some of the fruit back in 2020. “Developing these new products is a direct result of wanting to utilise batches of smoke-tainted wines from the 2020 bushfires. It will initially be a small production that we hope to have in place prior to the Christmas season, along with a Port-style Ruby Fortified, ideal for Christmas drinking with the flavours of red fruits and a lovely soft finish.”
The 50th Jubilee will be celebrated with a number of membersonly events that include a gala lunch held in the cellar door with the 2-hatted Muse Restaurant catering, a charity auction, a smorgasbord of entertainment and, of course, wines with Alex. There will be wine tasting masterclasses with Alex and the launch of a brand-new wine club called Club Radica.
Briar Ridge is home to the longest continually running wine club in the Hunter Valley. It is not unusual for some memberships to be over 20 years old. As part of the 50th celebrations, the winery is launching Club Radica, inspired by ‘secret societies’; it’s a Single Vineyard wine club by invitation only.
“This is more than a wine club; this is all about access,” said Michael. “Access to our most unique and exclusive products, access to other people who share their passion for our wines and access to our winemaker, Alex. Being invitation only, there is an air of exclusivity, but this group is as carefully curated as a personal cellar, and it’s all about getting back into corks and conversations.”
The cellar door experience has been evolving and now includes Osteria, a restaurant specialising in home-style Italian cooking and is the ideal choice for a relaxed lunch on the deck. Osteria also offers an interactive Gusto Wine Flight. Available in Bianco (white), Rosso (red) or Mesco (mixed) wines to pair with a home-style meal or charcuterie board, they are only $30 per person and the perfect way to experience Briar Ridge wines.
On Sunday afternoons, solo musicians provide chilled-out tunes for a peaceful, fun vibe, and there’s plenty of room for the kids to run around in the idyllic landscape. You can even book a private picnic in your own corner of the grounds or bring your furry friend, with Pooch Platters available to keep your pet dog happy.

We are a destination cellar door, a place to reward those who are curious about Mount View, a place where you can come and spend a few hours at a time exploring wines, eating delicious food with family, friends or your partner and enjoying the surrounding landscape. ENJOYING LIFE'S GREATEST PLEASURES at Saddler's Creek
Saddler's Creek Wines was established in 1990 by two friends with a passion for fine wine and a serious love of horses. Over time, the winery gained a reputation for producing outstanding full-bodied red wines. The Bluegrass label was developed and has become a highly acclaimed iconic wine and Saddler's Creek flagship brand.
Like so many before and since, Frank Laureti was introduced to Bluegrass Cabernet Sauvignon through a friend and subsequently took up a Saddler's CLUB EQUUS membership, which he enjoyed for over ten years. He loved the stuff! So when Saddler's Creek came up for sale in 2014, Frank had what he describes as a "Victor Kiam moment" (of Remington Shaver fame) and purchased the winery lock stock and barrel!
Frank's enthusiasm was contagious, and his wife Wendy and brother Serge became partners in this new venture. Frank concedes that buying into the wine business was "a romantic notion, but you do some things for work and some things to live…….friends, food and wine are among life's great pleasures."
Fast forward to today and Saddler's Creek Wines remains a boutique winery specialising in crafting premium quality wines.
Saddlers wines are distinctly different from the vast majority of wine products available to wine lovers. Visit their Pokolbin Cellar Door to experience a premium wine tasting experience. Enjoy one of their
seasonal tasting food and wine journeys, or attend a regular-themed food and wine experience to enhance your wine understanding and knowledge. Their food van also offers a seasonal menu curated to enhance their wine flights.
The popular Weekends at Saddler's allows visitors to relax in the wine garden each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, where they can enjoy local live acoustic music with delicious food to complement their wine tasting experiences.

Savour a Spring Wine Fling
Spring – the season that wakes us up and stimulates our senses, delivering freshness and vitality and getting us back to enjoying the great outdoors.
Think crisp, refreshing white wines —lighter, fruit, and acid-driven dry or slightly off-dry whites served well chilled. These are wines compatible with salads, shellfish, seafood, pasta, fresh cheese, antipasto and white meats.
WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN
Contrary to popular belief, you can sip reds even after Winter has come and gone, so don't shelve your reds just yet. Many red wines have outstanding qualities in warmer weather, lighter, with lower alcohol levels, higher acidity and subtle tannins. Chilled red wines can also be excellent on a warm day.
Rather than sticking to the same old favourites, changing the wine we drink with the seasons is an opportunity to experience a broader range of varietals and pairings. As the weather warms and our taste buds start to crave fresh and clean wines, it's time to choose wines for their lightness and simplicity.
With characteristics of both red and white wines, Rosé is undeniably the first choice for many wine lovers when the weather starts to warm up – especially when seafood such as tuna, barbecued prawns, or swordfish is on the menu.
With or without food, Hunter Valley Semillon is the wine to drink this Spring. Naturally low in alcohol, Hunter Semillon is the ideal partner for the season's lighter fish and seafood meals. When young, it's great with fresh oysters, cooked prawns and white-fleshed fish. With age, it is lovely when served with smoked trout or salmon, roast chicken, lobster with burnt butter and other flavoursome dishes.
As far as dry white wines are concerned, Chardonnay is the way to go. It's the crowd-pleaser of white wines and a full-bodied option that completes any Spring evening and a delicious pairing with prawns, grilled fish, chicken dishes, pasta and risotto.
As a tangy, dry white wine that is perfectly light and fresh with fruity flavours such as pear, apple and melon, Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio is a warmer weather wine through and through and can be paired with a variety of food with ease.
With its fresh, tropical fruit characters, un-oaked style, and sheer drinkability, Verdelho is very much the all-rounder and perfect when served with spicy Asian cuisines or enjoyed on its own on a warm day. While it is widely grown throughout Australia, the Hunter Valley consistently produce some of the best examples of this variety.

A glass of Sparkling Wine is always appropriate, regardless of the time of year. But with the arrival of Spring, a glass of bubbly feels almost mandatory. The wine's temperature and the bubbles themselves make it a refreshing, cooling beverage, and its high acidity makes it ideally suited to lighter foods such as ham, salad, chilled soup and a variety of seafood.
Pinot Noir is, without a doubt, the first go-to red wine on a warm day and is superb with duck, salmon, lamb, pork, mushrooms, cured meats and charcuterie, as well as a range of seafood. While these wines don't need to be too cold, keep them in a wine cellar or refrigerator to ensure the best taste.
Easy drinking, fresh and vibrant, Grenache is one of the more
seasonable varieties and is very trendy at the moment. Best served with wood-fired pizza, olives and warm nights, Grenache is a wine very much reflective of the Mediterranean climate in which it originates.
Made for warmer, balmy afternoons in Italy, accompanied with freshly baked bread topped with sun-ripened tomatoes, fresh basil, and olive oil, Sangiovese is ideal for chilling and perfect for warm Australian spring weather.
When deciding what wine to try this Spring – why not try something new – a variety you have never tried? Then, pair it with the right kind of food, and you'll see how perfectly tuned they are to the flavours of Spring.

TASTING The refined palate is elegant with red berry-like flavours, good fruit weight and a cleansing and slightly dry finish.
FOOD MATCH Terrific with anything from fruit to cheese, but great with seared salmon.
