I have been selling my succulents and plants at Handmade in the Hunter Markets since December 2020. I previously made sensory products designed for children on the Autistic Spectrum and sold them directly to schools, preschools and occupational therapy clinics. But, when Covid restrictions came into effect, I put that on hold and thought I might be able to put my passion for gardening to good use. Operating my backyard nursery allows me to work from home, which is fabulous, and also means I am still available to our two boys if needed.

MEET THE MAKER

My business name is Cathmish Succulents & Such. The Cathmish part comes from the fact that my name is Catherine Michele, and my Mum often called me Cathmish. So, it just felt like a natural choice for my Business name. I just altered the 'c' of Michele to an 's' for phonetics. The second part suggests that I offer succulents, but not exclusively, which I felt was important.

Do you grow or source your succulents? Are succulents difficult to look after, and how should we look after them?

We are a contemporary Parisian Patisserie specialising in delicious pastries that not only taste delightful but look fabulous as well. The menu includes light meals, brunch, high tea, French pastries, coffee from the grounds of Alexandria, local and imported wines, handmade chocolate and treats for dining in or take away. Don’t forget the cheese as well!

Can you please tell us about your succulents – how many different varieties do you offer, and how do customers buy them (individually or potted together)?

We are committed to never compromising on taste and delivering something that you just won‘t find anywhere else.

We love the name of your stall - please tell us what it means and how you came up with it.

INTERVIEW DI VON ESSEN

The opportunity of being involved with Handmade in the Hunter Markets has been invaluable to my business and I'm incredibly thankful to have been welcomed into such an inspiring group of truly talented and friendly fellow stallholders.

Cathmish Succulents & Such

Like most plants, not all succulents need the same conditions. It's important to know a little bit about the needs of each if they are to thrive. I have lots of chats with customers at the markets about the specific requirements of the plants they purchase, but the failsafe is that every plant I offer at the markets has a name tag, so if in doubt, Google!

Handmade in the Hunter Market will be held at Sobels Wines from 9am until 2pm on Saturday, 24 September, and Saturday 1 & Sunday 2 October + Saturday 8 and 15 October. For more information, visit www.handmademarkets.com.au.

How long have you been running Cathmish Succulents & Such - and how did you start off?

Catherine Dixon is the proud 'stay-at-home' Mum of two wonderful young men, and since stopping work 20+ years ago, she has worked from home, 'making and selling'. Putting her passion for plants and gardening into practice, and with the support of family and friends, Catherine has created the very lush Cathmish Succulents & Such and is a regular at Handmade in the Hunter Markets.

I don't know exactly how many varieties of succulents and plants I have, as there are so many, but I usually have at least 50 varieties on offer at each market stall. Most of them are sold in individual plastic pots in a variety of sizes, but I also offer arrangements potted up in tubs and handmade timber planters.

I propagate all of my own succulents and plants using a variety of methods, including leaf and stem cuttings. Most of the varieties I have and cultivate are ones that have proven quite hardy and easy to look after in our area. Some need more protection from the extremes in temperature that we experience here in our corner of the Hunter Valley.

What do you like most about Handmade in the Hunter Markets?

Mike’s parents, Anna and Joss De Iuliis, purchased a cattle property on Lovedale Road in Pokolbin to begin his winemaking dream, the family made wine in Italy. The family migrated to Australia in the 1950s after the war, when Mike’s grandfather, Celeste (known as Charlie), who was a stone mason by trade, ended up at the Greta Migrant Camp. Joss grew up locally and became a mining engineer who had to commute through the Pokolbin area to work from Newcastle, where the family lived. He never lost his passion for food and wine and his fond memories of Italy. So, in 1987 they finally purchased a property on which they could establish their vines. They spent three years preparing the soil on the property and began producing wine in 1997, with their first proper vintage in 2002 with winemaker David Hook.

accolades. They have enjoyed a five-star Halliday rating for almost 19 years and five red stars for 11 of those.

“I’ve been thrilled with the success of my wines at various regional and state-wide wine shows,” said Mike.

“At the 2021 Hunter Valley Wine Show, we were awarded six trophies for three different wines. Of these trophies, I was most humbled by the Doug Seabrook Trophy for Best Red Wine of Show with our ’19 Limited Release Shiraz and the John Lewis Trophy for Best Museum Red with our ’09 Limited Release Shiraz. These two trophies were real highlights for me, as they validate my commitment to the production of Hunter Valley wine of the highest quality in both the short and long term. This year we’ve won four trophies, including Best Red Wine of Show and Best Other Red. Our Shiraz Touriga has become an iconic blend for us, winning Best Other Red every year since 2018 at the Hunter Wine Show.”

The De Iuliis family were purchasing grapes from the vineyard as early as 2005 to make their Charlie Shiraz (named after Mike’s grandfather), then began leasing it in 2009 before purchasing it from the Roche family in 2013. They have since revitalised the vineyard and now have Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Pecorino from this vineyard. The third vineyard is on Talga Road in Lovedale and is planted solely with Shiraz. The clay soils are mineral rich and allow for a full-bodied Shiraz full of depth and flavour.

Mike was destined to become a winemaker, beginning his career by studying a Bachelor of Science at Macquarie University, then postgraduate studies of Oenology at Roseworthy Campus in 1999. He was selected for the Len Evans Tutorial, one of the world’s most exclusive wine schools. He went on to become a judge, panel chair and chair of judges both nationally and internationally, all the while honing his own winemaking skills at the family vineyards and developing the brand and sterling reputation that they now enjoy. The winery has 5 Underlined Red Stars from the Halliday Wine Companion, which means it’s in the top 2% of wineries Australia-wide, and they are winning multiple awards and

But it’s not all about the accolades and industry recognition for Mike. He sees his responsibility for sustainability practices within his industry as the future of winemaking and the next key determinant of wine quality.

Mike is keen for the industry to develop a framework of sustainability practices so that consumers can be sure of the authenticity of claims by winegrowers and recognition for the hard work that committed winegrowers do can be appropriately awarded. Consumers can be sure that they are not being a victim of ‘greenwashing’.

“Our viticultural and farming practices are intrinsically linked to a long-term generational mindset. There is a need to ensure the environment is adequately cared for in this lifetime and for future generations. For the last five years, we’ve been using biochar across our vineyards. Biochar has the capacity to be an immediate solution to reducing the global impact of farming. It’s fascinating that biochar can store the carbon produced by burning pruning material and the natural decomposition of agricultural matter in the ground, thus significantly reducing greenhouse gas levels. It’s also proven that its presence in the vineyard can improve water quality and increase soil fertility.”

In addition to the use of biochar, the winery has been at the forefront of increased diversity in grape varieties. As the climate changes, growers look to alternative varieties that cope better in extreme conditions.

“We’ve picked the alternative varieties, including Pecorino, Touriga and Montepulciano, as they are more suitable to the changes in extreme weather patterns, and I believe that we were amongst the first to plant them here in the Hunter. As climate change continues to increase our warmer summers, these varieties thrive in a warm, Mediterranean climate like the Hunter has. By choosing to grow varieties that are suited to the climate, we can minimise the risk of disease and struggle in the growing season, which helps eliminate the need for harsh chemical sprays.”

“The next achievement on our sustainability journey will be certification for our vineyards and winery through Sustainable Winegrowers Australia. As producers, we are responsible for ensuring we are genuine in our actions. Authenticity is a key area for us to ensure we are transparent in our ongoing sustainability journey. We know we aren’t perfect, but we are making significant steps towards innovation across our entire business. Certifications by reputable boards are critical to ensure standards are met.”

“The talented team around me inspires me to keep pushing the boundaries of winemaking, giving them an exceptional range of wines they then get to explore with our guests. It was my team who decided to enter the Cellar Door of the Year awards. We didn’t expect to win. We thought we’d dip our toe in the water, and maybe try to win next year. Instead, they survived mystery shoppers online, over the phone and face to face and smashed it out of the park. It was the definition of a team effort, and I’m very proud of them, especially when you consider there are over 150 cellar doors in the Hunter Valley.”

yhv17 | SEPT-OCT 2022

The cellar door is not the only way to experience De Iuliis wines. In 2005 the winery was approached by Dan Murphy's to retail wines in their stores. Mike considered the proposal carefully and decided to sell three of his 16 wines to the outlet as a way to extend his brand reach and exposure.“Isent them my price list, as I would to any customer. I didn’t offer any discounts or deals, and they accepted. We only sell our three core range wines – Shiraz, Chardonnay and Semillon because we need to have plenty of stock available. We find that customers may try it, like it and then discover that there are many more wines to try here at the cellar door – like five other Shiraz they can taste. The brand recognition drives visitation, and once they’re here at the cellar door, we can showcase the depth and range of our brand and give them a great experience.”

Other changes in the wine industry include the way in which cellar doors are experienced following on from the Covid pandemic. Covid forced wineries to offer seated tasting experiences and more structured offerings that educate and engage consumers. De Iuliis offers several different tasting experiences ranging from the “Made by Mike” small batch tasting for $10pp to the full winery tour with matching wine and cheese tasting and cellar door credit for $130 for two. Mike credits the team he has built around him for much of the winery’s success.

Gartelmann Wines was established here in 1996 by Jan and Jorg Gartelmann, who developed a boutique winery specialising in award-winning handcrafted wines using grapes sourced from the Lower and Upper Hunter Valley, Mudgee, Rylstone, and Orange regions of NSW. When the winery was purchased by Matt Dillow, Chef and owner of The Deck Café (already located on the site), just over 18 months ago, Matt was bubbling with plans, so we stopped in for a chat with Matt and Operations Manager Jimmy Smith to see how things are going.

It's about 18 months since you took over the whole property – what has been the biggest challenge during that time (apart from the obvious Covid, of course!)

yhv 20 | SEPT-OCT 2022

Matt: Yes, there are a lot of changes! The staff love that we extended the kitchen and built a new massive cool room, but that's behind the scenes. My favourite addition is the awesome juice bar area – serving up freshly squeezed juices, Danish pastries, croissants and more. But basically, I just love looking after the grounds with my crew –making Gartelmann's look good, so when visitors drive in, they get that country feel – beautiful gardens, farm animals, and our beautiful old Ferguson tractors. I love seeing families walking around the grounds after breakfast, lunch or a wine tasting taking photos, and enjoying what my team and I are creating.

Our Epic Tasting Experience is your gateway

dishes created by the chefs at the two-hatted Muse Restaurant, the Epic Tasting highlights the fresh ingredients and elegant wines that make the Hunter so special.

Matt: Hands down – the weather!! We are predominantly an outdoor seating restaurant, and the weather has hurt us hard this year, but we have plans to fix lots of things and are now just waiting for the grounds to dry up so we can get a few jobs done.

Don't drive past the Magpie – or you'll miss out on what might just be the wine and food mecca of Lovedale! With two delicious reasons to pull over on your way down Lovedale Road from the Hunter Expressway, The Deck Café and Gartelmann Wines have become a must-visit destination for the palate.

And over the next couple of months, we will see the 2022 vintage releases of our Brittany's Blanc de Blancs (named after Matt's eldest daughter) and the 2022 Stephanie Pinot Gris. Both will be perfect for Christmas and hopefully a rain-free, warm summer. What's new at The Deck Café for Spring?

Gartelmann Wines have recently been sweeping up a few awards (see inset). Why do you think Gartelmann Wines have been so successful of late?

• Triple M Newcastle – Newcastle's Favourite Restaurant

Jimmy: Our new release wines have been exceptional. Despite a challenging vintage, we were lucky to see some good fruit come in; ultimately, that is where it all starts. If we want to make great wine, we need great fruit. Combine this with the exceptional First Creek winemaking team led by Liz Silkman, and you can't go wrong. Matt and I are always involved in finishing the wines with Liz and Annabel to ensure they fit with the Gartelmann style and are of a quality we can all be proud of. Are there any new or returning release wines for tasting in the Cellar Door right now?

Jimmy: Obviously, some great wines for tasting, but also some upcoming members' events. Our Members Pick Up Picnic on Sunday 18 September and our Annual Barrel Tasting luncheon on Saturday 5 November. Both can be booked through our website www.gartelmann.com.au or email jimmy@gartelmann.com.au. And if you're not already a member – it's a great time to join!

WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN

Rosé is produced in a comparable manner to how red wine is produced, but the red grape skins are removed earlier during fermentation. Since there are no pink grapes, Rose’s pinkish hue comes from red grapes that are in contact with the wine mixture for less time than red wine.

Some wine experts credit this shift in popularity to the discovery of the chic, European style of Rosé – those pale, fresh, delicate wines coming from areas like the Côtes de Provence in the South of France. These elegant French expressions allowed Rosé to shed its dull reputation, and suddenly this trendy drop was being enjoyed everywhere, from the beach houses in the Hamptons to pool parties in the Hollywood Hills. However,

Rosé is not just the trendy wine of the 21st century – it is also one of the oldest and yet most modern of wines. The origins of Rosé winemaking can be traced back to ancient Greece, when much of the red wine produced was pale red. By mid-100 B.C, the Romans had popularised darker red wines in Europe, but Rosé wine remained popular in parts of France – most notably, Provincia Romana, which is today’s Provence region. They take it very seriously over there, and some of the world’s finest Rosés come from this region – often referred to as the Rosé capital of the Nowadays, world.almost all the world’s wine-producing regions make Rosé wine. The first and arguably, most important Rosé producer is France, where it is predominantly found in the southern region of Tavel, Provence and the Loire Valley in Anjou. Other important regions are Piedmont in Italy, Rioja in Spain and Styria in Austria.

Today people can’t seem to get enough of this trendy tipple, and it has become one of the fastest-growing wine categories in the last five years, with the biggest markets being the US, France, South Africa, Denmark, and Australia.

yhv 26 | SEPT-OCT 2022

Great to look at and even better to taste, but it was not all that long ago when the only people drinking Rosé were either French or tourists enjoying the sun-kissed lifestyle in southern France.

The wonderful thing about Rosé is that it can be enjoyed all year round. But it is really in its prime in the warmer months. After all, is there anything more magical than a summer picnic or BBQ with friends, delicious food and a glass of gorgeous pink in your hand?

fresh and vibrant Rosés are produced from red grape varieties such as Shiraz and Grenache, with only minimal contact on skins to give the wines their signature ‘blush.’ However, other varieties like Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir also make delicious versions of this wine.

When it comes to food, it is the most versatile wine for food pairing, displaying the freshness of white wine combined with the structure and heft of a red. As a fantastic food wine, it can be paired with various foods and flavours and manages spices and heat very well. Rosé is excellent alongside salads, antipasto platters, fish dishes or even your favourite curry and is the perfect accompaniment to soft goat cheese.

Rosé usually has a delicate flavour and a balance of sweetness and acidity that make it a refreshing palate-cleansing drink. Best served young and at a chilled temperature.

If the world looks better to you through Rosé coloured glasses, there are plenty of delicious Rosés in the Hunter to try – and you can enjoy them all year long.

For this wine, colour is essential and is a significant aspect of its appeal. It is impossible to define the “correct” colour of Rosé wine, which can be a veritable rainbow of different shades of pink – from pale copper, pastel pink, mauve blushes and magenta, through to apricot and even orange. The vast range of colours depends on the grape used, the richness of the grape’s phenolic compounds and the winemaking techniques used, which include the length of time the grape skins have been in contact with the grape juice. And when it comes to the taste, you can expect sweet, savoury, dry, textural, smooth, light, creamy, heavy –you name Australia’sit!

Over 350 industry professionals attended the luncheon to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the Hunter Valley wine industry.

“The Semillon Classes across the board were all a pleasure to judge, with the best wines having a perfect balance of expression and power. The Chardonnay Classes produced some excellent wines which can easily compete with Australia’s best, while the Verdelho impressed the judges with some sensitive winemaking on display. Despite the powerhouse variety of the region being Semillon, it’s great to see people investing time and money into the next cohort of white varieties such as Fiano and Vermentino,” said Judge Samantha Connew.

While the white varieties were a highlight of this year’s show, the Hunter Valley reds also performed strongly, with the prestigious Best Red Wine of the Show awarded to De Iuliis Wines 2019 Limited Release Shiraz for the second year in a row.

“It’s a testament of a great winemaker in Mike De Iuliis to take out the Best Red Wine of the Show for the same wine two consecutive years running. 2019 was a great vintage, and this wine displayed beautiful freshness and concentration,” said International Judge Jeremy Stockman.
