Bask in all things Italian with
A Little Bit of Italy in Broke! Now in its eleventh year, A Little Bit of Italy in Broke will once again transform the Broke Fordwich Wine Region in the Hunter Valley into a mouth-watering Italian haven. Spanning across three days, from Friday April 8th until Sunday April 10th, the event will celebrate all things Italian to the backdrop of the picturesque and tranquil Broke Fordwich landscape. "We feel this year’s event is our best one to date and are looking forward to sharing the good food, wine, music and fun that best reflects the passion of the Italian spirit," said A Little Bit of Italy’s Event Manager, Rowena Hawkins. Originating as an intimate Italian dinner in 2005 hosted by a local winery, the event now encompasses 10 venues, providing plenty of opportunities to indulge in wood-fired pizza, antipasti, and Italian cheese. But make sure you leave room for gelato and espresso for dessert! Tickling your taste buds, the weekend will showcase an impressive line-up of fresh produce and local wine, along with master classes and demonstrations hosted by the growers, makers and owners of the venues, all with an Italian twist. Afterwards, relax amongst the grape vines and olive groves while sipping on traditional Hunter Valley blends or try expanding your palette with the numerous Italian varietals grown in the area. Throughout the weekend look out for the event flags that indicate participating venues and be sure to pick up your event wine glass ($10) at your first stop – this is your ticket to enjoying and sampling wine at each venue. You can also collect passport stamps as you wander through the wineries to enter the prize draw to win a Luxury Broke Fordwich MidWeek Escape for Two. Plus, to make getting around easier there will be a "Hop on, Hop off" shuttle bus available each day for only $25 per day. Staying in Pokolbin, Lovedale or Rothbury? Book a Rover Coaches transfer and shuttle package to enjoy your day. To bring out your inner Italian try one of the many workshops on offer and learn how to make authentic Gnocchi, Olive Oil Pizza or Nduja Sausage. Other highlights include market stalls, live music, giant Jenga and bocce! If you’re bringing the family, a number of venues have kid-friendly activities ranging from scarecrow judging, to the Spaghetti Throwing Competition. The local winemaking community will be hosting an Italian Dinner with an Italian flavour on Saturday April 9th at Catherine Vale Wines, where guests can mingle with the local growers and enjoy an Italian Menu specially designed by The Cellar Restaurant. Shared in true village style, the banquet of entrees will be followed by a delicious spit roasted whole lamb and finished with dessert and an array of cheeses. ADVENTURE
Getting Adventurous
in the Hunter Valley “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” - Eleanor Roosevelt. People are drawn to the Hunter Valley for many reasons – amongst them are the world class wines, the food, the tranquillity and more recently the concerts and music festivals featuring Australian and international artists. It’s no secret that if you’re looking for the perfect place to spend a day or a weekend exploring some of Australia’s best wine, there are few better destinations than the cellar doors of the Hunter Valley. But what if you’re looking for more than the opportunity to kick back and relax with a glass of wine in hand – is there something more to Australia’s oldest and largest wine region? Fortunately, the answer is a resounding "yes" - with the Hunter being home to almost as many other interesting activities as there are wine varieties.
SADDLE UP With no shortage of natural bushland just teeming with native wildlife, not to mention the beauty of the rolling hills and stunning views of the countryside, it’s little wonder that getting off the beaten track to discover the world around us is high on the list of must-do activities. Slow the pace down a little to take in the Hunter’s amazing scenery by ditching your four wheels in favour of something with a little less horsepower and saddle up for a horse-riding adventure. At Hunter Valley Horse Riding and Adventures in Lovedale you can ride the unique and beautiful Molly Morgan Range while experiencing the spectacular views of the countryside as far north as the Barrington Tops.
thb 10 | APRIL 2016
Take a bike ride
Whether you’re an old hand on horseback or not, there’s a ride for every experience level, with the 1 and 1.5 hour guided trail rides being the most popular for both beginners and experts alike. Owner Margaret Bancroft said horse riding offers people the chance to venture where a vehicle cannot go. "Horse-riding is like nothing else, it's peaceful and tranquil and you get to experience some of the most wonderful scenery and be close to nature at the same time." Of course you can also hop onto a saddle of another kind. Cycling is another great way to make your way around the region at your own pace and get some exercise at the same time. Bring your own bike or hire your own at one of several bike hire places in Pokolbin where you can hire one for the day, complete with a tour map showing suggested routes. If you have the urge to go off the beaten track - a popular route is through the Werakata National Park, a small park located in the southeast corner of Hunter Valley with a rich history of Aboriginal occupation and accessible via Lomas Lane off Wine Country Drive. But if you’re looking for a two-wheeled adventure of another kind, why not seek out the sights on a Segway - a two-wheeled, self-balancing, battery-powered electric vehicle. Book your Segway adventure at Hunter Valley Resort on Hermitage Road, before heading off to explore the off road tracks and trails of the vast bushland property. Travelling along an old 1880's stock route, participants are guaranteed to see the Hunter from a whole new perspective, encountering scores of kangaroos and with awesome views of the Brokenback Ranges before venturing through the resort’s vineyard to conclude the ride.
SOAR TO NEW HEIGHTS If wings instead of wheels are more your thing, there’s no better way to combine aerobatic thrills with an amazing view of the valley than by taking flight with Hunter Valley Joy Flights. When it comes to making lasting memories, flying in a vintage aircraft is hard to beat and regardless of the number of adventures you take part in, you will never forget a ride in a vintage aircraft.
For Ben Merkenhof owner of Hunter Valley Vintage Wings and Hunter Valley Joy Flights, there’s a remarkable sensation that he get just about every time he goes flying. "It’s a feeling of tremendous well-being, that everything is okay in the world," says Ben. At Hunter Valley Joy Flights, you take to the skies in the open cockpit of a 1940 VH-EEI Tiger Moth. Soar through the skies over the picturesque Pokolbin countryside for as little as 15 minutes or as long as an hour and experience what Ben calls "golden era aviation". "It’s real flying, it’s stick and rudder, it’s wind in the wires and the hair, it’s a real aeroplane – all the others are just pretenders," he said. Stepping off the adrenaline a little, there is another and far more gentle way to enjoy the scenery of the Hunter and it’s in the basket of an hot air balloon with one of the pilots at Balloon Aloft . Taking off at sunrise, ascend into the sky and float gently along the breeze, taking in views of the picturesque wine regions of Pokolbin, Lovedale, Rothbury or Broke – from just above the treetops or at heights of 2000 feet or more. The one hour balloon flight is followed by a delicious gourmet breakfast at the famous Peterson House winery and restaurant – the perfect place to sit back, relax and truly savour the flight of a lifetime you just experienced.
SAVOUR THE HUNTER When your taste for adventure runs more to food than flights, a visit to The Hunter Valley Cheese Company is a must. The boutique cheese producer and retailer has been manufacturing and selling speciality cheeses from its Pokolbin factory since 1995.
A wine education to its rich history in the Hunter and around the world; the range of grape varieties and their differences to the way they are blended to create the desirable bouquet, taste, and colour. Swish and sip your way to a personalised Wine Appreciation Certificate and the ability to impress your friends (and yourself) with your knowledge of sparkling, red, white, dessert and fortified wine styles.
GETTING BACK TO THE WINE
But a visit to Peter Curtis "the Cheese-man" and Rose Lambert’s establishment is about more than just eating a range of quality handmade cheeses – it’s also about education.
Now that you are armed with all this knowledge on how to appreciate a good wine, there’s no better time to engage in the Hunter’s most popular activity – the wine tasting tour.
A visit to the working cheese factory isn’t complete without taking the time out to listen to their complimentary cheesemaking talk, held daily at 11am and 3pm in front of the viewing windows.
There are numerous ways to work your way around the wineries by yourself or with a group of friends, but if you want to sit back, relax and let someone else do the organising and driving, then book yourself on one of the many wine tours heading around the Hunter Valley.
Try their menu of cheese and charcuterie boards featuring artisan cheese, Choose from a full day, half day or private wine tour from operators such olives, oils, fruit pastes, pâtés, local breads and accompaniments and as the popular Cheers Bus, or the family run All Around the Vines tours perfect for sharing. which make their way around a selection of boutique cellar doors as well And once you’ve seen how to whip up one of these creamy delights, as other must-sample Hunter venues including local breweries, distillery, enhance your culinary skill set even further by visiting the Hunter Valley cheese and chocolate factories. WHATS ON
The RED HOT SUMMER Tour 2016 For the first time, one of the hottest summer festivals on the calendar, the Red Hot Summer Tour will be coming to the Hunter Valley, taking to the stage at Roche Estate on Saturday 16th April 2016. The acclaimed festival never disappoints in providing an incredible line-up of some of the best talent in the Australian Music Industry, with the 2015 event featuring the Hoodoo Guru’s, James Reyne and Daryl Braithwaite. The 2016 tour features the proverbial who’s who of Oz rock royalty; featuring Jimmy Barnes, Noiseworks, The Angels, Mark Seymour and The Undertow and The Badloves. With the Hunter Valley show predicted to be a sellout, audiences can expect a day jam packed with classic hits and Aussie rock anthems. Red Hot Summer Tour promoter Duane McDonald says the 2016 festival will be huge, with 15 shows booked. “This year we have expanded to take the Red Hot Summer Tour to new areas and new venues, which makes it the biggest run we have done for the tour to date. We are excited to bring the Red Hot Summer Tour to the Hunter Valley for the first time, and I can’t imagine a better location for a great day of Aussie rock.” No Australian artist has enjoyed more success here at home than Jimmy Barnes. He’s had the same number of Number 1 albums as the Beatles, with 10 solo chart toppers and 4 more with Cold Chisel. He has an enviable back catalogue that makes for incredible live performances with songs like Working Class Man, When Your Love Is Gone and No Second Prize. When Cold Chisel returned to the Hunter Valley for their One Night Stand Tour in November 2015, they were met with rave reviews, so it is no surprise that Jimmy Barnes’ return is highly anticipated. It is hard to think of an Australian rock band more adored by music fans and critics alike than Noiseworks. The multi-ARIA nominated band features some of the best musicians in the country and have produced a swag of incredible songs, such as Take Me Back, Love Somebody, Touch, Freedom, Miles and Miles and In My Youth to name a few. Widely reputed for their killer live shows, Aussie rock doesn’t come much better than The Angels. It's been over four decades since brothers

Noiseworks
Jimmy Barnes Rick and John Brewster co-founded the iconic band and penned some of Australia's most anthemic tracks. Fronted now by Dave Gleeson, audiences will be in for a treat when The Angels take to the stage. Mark Seymour is undoubtedly one of the country’s most prolific songwriters. Mark Seymour and the Undertow have been steadily touring the country promoting their latest release ‘Mayday’, demonstrating to audiences why this talented songsmith has endured such longevity in the Australian music scene. With a back catalogue of songs such as Throw Your Arms Around Me, Holy Grail and When The River Runs Dry, any time in the company of Mark and his band is a treat for all music lovers. Rounding out the bill are The Badloves, who are an Australian institution. Established in Melbourne in the late 1980s, they have made an indelible imprint on the local scene, from their original compositions to the collaborations. Described as having a ‘neo-hippy, retro’ sound, they have an impressive back catalogue including the likes of Green Limousine, I Remember, Lost and Memphis. The band called it quits in 2010, only reforming in 2015 for a run of shows, making their inclusion on the 2016 line-up of the Red Hot Summer Tour a very special one indeed. JOY FLIGHTS Get a bird's eye view of the Hunter Valley as you look over an unparalleled panorama, with vineyards stretching in every direction like a patchwork quilt toward the distant mountain ranges. When it comes to making lasting memories, flying in a vintage aircraft is hard to beat! They say it’s like a first kiss … exhilarating and exciting all at the same time. So, whether it be reminiscing about days gone by or looking for that unique adventure, a flight in a lovingly restored 1940 Tiger Moth, is for many, a thrill of a lifetime. Donning a leather flying helmet and goggles, getting ready for a flight of pure nostalgia, taking off and experiencing being airborne while looking down on the earth as you enjoy the romance of flying and then feeling the gentle touchdown back on the ground – these are the simple joys of every flight . Nothing compares with the thrill of flying in an open cockpit of these true ladies of the sky!
Whether experiencing the thrill of aerobatics or simply flying high above the bustle of modern life, it is easy to imagine you are back in the 1930's and 1940’s. Pilots certainly never seem to tire of it and for Ben Merkenhof, owner of Hunter Valley Vintage Wings and Hunter Valley Joy Flights, there’s a remarkable sensation that he get just about every time he goes flying. But he’s also driven by a desire to share the sheer thrill of flying through the skies in what he calls “golden era aviation”, via the joy flights offered by Hunter Valley Vintage Wings. “It’s real flying, it’s stick and rudder, it’s wind in the wires and the hair, it’s a real aeroplane – all the others are just pretenders,” Ben said.
Present this voucher to receive 10% off. Terms and conditions apply.
“But for me, it’s also all about smiles – the more people we can make smile, the better. The more people we can get enthused about aviation and vintage aviation the better.” Hunter Valley Vintage Wings specialise in unique open cockpit adventure flight experiences and is home to a remarkable collection of vintage aircraft. Historic, awe-inspiring time machines that appeal to fans and aviation enthusiasts from all over the world. The fleet of vintage aircraft displayed at Hunter Valley Vintage Wings have been carefully restored to represent the same dignity they possessed when they ruled the skies and have since earned the admiration of knowledgeable aviators and inspired the imagination of those who have always dreamed of soaring above the clouds in these ageless flying machines. One of the prized aircrafts in the fleet is the “Big Bob”, a WW2 Boeing Stearman Bi-plane, one of only 282 were ever built by the US Navy in 1942 as military trainer aircrafts. The Stearman is recognised as the best of its kind in Australia and winner of Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia’s Grand Champion Award in 2011. Treat yourself to a one-of-a-kind experience and take a flight in the VH-EEI Tiger Moth. In December 2004, it was lovingly restored for Ben’s father – the late Bob Merkenhof and now sports a very unique civilian colour scheme. The Tiger Moth was named the Best Tiger Moth in 2004 by the Antique Aircraft Association of Australia and also won the Best Tiger Moth Restoration Award. Packages are available for 15, 30 and 60 minute flights in the Tiger Moth, flying over the Hunter Valley's Vineyards and Newcastle’s rugged coastline. If seating for up to 3 passengers per flight is required, Hunter Valley Joy Flights are also pleased to introduce the 1956 Winjeel “Twenty Seven” which was manufactured during the first half of 1956 and used by the Royal Australian Airforce and Royal Australian Navy for training pilots. Education is a major feature of the museum and Ben hosts the Sights, Sounds and Stories session every Saturday and Sunday from 10.40am to bring to life the history of the iconic planes used to train the pilots of the British Empire and Allied Forces during World War II.

There is also the Werakata National Park, a small easily accessible park, located in the southeast corner of Hunter Valley Wine Country with a rich history of Aboriginal occupation and which can be entered via Lomas Lane off Wine Country Drive. A great way to see the park is by bicycle but if walking is preferred, there is a pretty 3km walk that is easily accessible from Astills Picnic Area and makes for a nice morning or afternoon walk. Seasonal Beers at Hunter Beer Co. For over 10 years, and as the first microbrewery in the Hunter, the Hunter Beer Company has been brewing a unique range of hand crafted beers onsite at their premises in Nulkaba, where they have a wide selection of multi-award winning beers and a growing number of seasonal releases. Currently on tap is the Slaked Magpie - a brown ale and one of their most popular seasonal beers. Also available is the Cranky Pants IPA - a classic US style India Pale Ale (IPA) that is brewed using exclusively US hops and lots of them. And now for the first time, Hunter Beer is brewing a Lezak - the Czech word for lager. The Czech Republic is famous for its beer and especially its Pilsner. The Lezak beer, is not as well-known as the Pilsner but outsells the Pilsner in the Czech republic by a factor of 4:1.
‘5 Red Stars For Excellence’
James Halliday’s Wine Companion
"We’ve brewed a classic version of the Lezak ", says Keith Grice, Head Brewer at Hunter Beer. Co. "It’s the colour of honey, spicy and floral on the nose, bready pilsner malt in the mouth with a crisp clean bitterness that comes from a traditional (two month) lagering period"

AUTUMN
WINES ASCELLA ORGANIC WINE Sparkling Pure Vescence Ascella is the largest certified organic vineyard in the Hunter Valley. All Ascella Organic Wines are made using only organic grapes from their secluded vineyard located in the pristine Broke Fordwich region, where they are committed to maintaining a balanced, chemical free and sustainable environment. With the expertise of multiple award-winning winemaker Liz Jackson, Ascella continues to produce great tasting, award-winning wines. TASTING This wonderful Sparkling Rosé has a tropical fruit nose with a zesty and refreshing palate. Most often described as delicious and yummy! CELLARING Enjoy now, but can be cellared.
ADINA VINEYARD 2014 Cabernet Shiraz The Cabernet Shiraz blend is often referred to as "The Great Australian Red" and it is a well-loved style in this country. In this case, it is a blend of Cabernet Franc (55%) and Shiraz (45%). As with all Adina wines, this has been made with great care. TASTING This wine is a variation of their signature Cabernet style, but it has its own unique flavours. Blending the firm tannin structure of Cabernet Franc with the rich fruit flavours of Shiraz creates a complex wine where the Shiraz adds velvety richness to the elegance of the Cabernet. FOOD MATCH The 2014 Cabernet Shiraz is a very satisfying wine that is a beautiful accompaniment to any meat dish.
THE VINDEN BASKETCASE Limited Release 2015 Shiraz Sourced from the Howard family’s Somerset Vineyard, which was planted on red volcanic clay soils and over weathered limestone in Pokolbin in 1970. Picked in Mid-February, the wine was made as an homage to traditional Hunter Burgundy. TASTING The age and character of the old vines shine through in this lighter style Shiraz. A fruit forward elegant wine, made with traditional methods; cold soaked, fermented cool in open concrete fermenters, hand plunged, basket pressed and aged in French Oak (25% new). CELLARING Great early drinking over the next three years. Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled on a hot summer afternoon.
HART & HUNTER 2015 Black Series Chenin Blanc The fruit for this new wine variety for Hart & Hunter were sourced from the block at the Cellar Door, which is believed to be one of the only remaining parcels of Chenin left in the Hunter. TASTING The Chenin is made with alot of mouthfeel and textural properties, yet also retaining a crisp, juiciness on the palate. There is a honeydew, lanolin, almost nutty aroma followed by a wilde concentrated palate. Flavours of straw, dried herbs, apple and lanolin allow this wine to finish with a savoury, zesty twang that keeps on giving with a beautiful crisp long finish. FOOD MATCH Enjoy this Chenin Blanc with Vietnamese pulled pork rice paper rolls, with spicy dipping sauce. CELLARING Definitely enjoy this wine chilled now, but if you can wait it should cellar for 5-7 years.
ERNEST HILL WINES 2014 ‘CEO’ Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy Winner at the 2015 Hunter Valley Boutique Wine Show. From the outstanding 2014 vintage, the Ernest Hill Wines 2014 ‘CEO’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a superb example of this noble French grape variety. TASTING Made from a single vineyard parcel of Hunter Valley grapes, specially selected by the Ernest Hill CEO. The wine displays mouth filling flavours of blackcurrant and blackberry, combined with some subtle toasty/vanilla highlights, from oak barrel maturation. Silky smooth tannins round off this exceptional wine. FOOD MATCH A must for your next roast meat and poultry feast. CELLARING Drink now or cellar to 2022.
TAMBURLAINE 2015 Wine Lovers Marsanne With a five red-star rating in James Halliday’s Wine Companion, as well as local, national and international wine show recognition, Tamburlaine Organic Wines continue to take the path less travelled in pursuit of wine excellence. TASTING The ‘new Pinot Gris’, Marsanne is a lesser known French white grape, which thrives in the high altitude and cool climate of the Orange Wine Region vineyard. The 2015 Wine Lovers Marsanne exudes fresh pineapple, honeycomb and floral aromas, with flavours of peaches and musk with sherbet-like acidity. FOOD MATCH This wine is perfectly matched with Asian style foods such as yum cha, Peking duck and aromatic Thai curries; also with creamy seafood, chicken or vegetarian pasta dishes. CELLARING Drink now, or cellar up to 9 years.

WINE VARIETY
Semillon
In the Hunter Valley
Often referred to as "Australia’s unique gift to the wine world", Hunter Valley Semillon is a unique white wine which keeps improving with age and is considered to be the highest quality and best example of dry white Semillon wine produced anywhere in the world.
Semillon is at its best when picked early to make a wine of low alcohol. When young, it is deliciously crisp with abundant citrus aromas. With age Hunter Valley Semillon develops unique complex toast, vanilla and honey flavours, giving it an amazing depth and richness. This remarkable wine can be left to mature for two decades or more with many believing that the wines are at their best around 10 years after vintage.
So strong is Semillon’s connection with the terroir of the Hunter Valley, that the style cannot been replicated anywhere else in the world. Hunter Valley Semillon is widely regarded as Australia’s unique white wine – a style unlike all others, based on unique climatic conditions, winemaker ingenuity and more than 180 years of practice.
Today, Semillon is also in demand with Australian wine drinkers as an important ingredient in the popular wine style, “Sem-Sav”, Semillon blended with Sauvignon Blanc. Drinkers appreciate the refreshing aroma of the Sauvignon Blanc on top of the weight and ballast of the Semillon.
Apart from being one of the most mispronounced wines, Sémillon is also one of the world's leading varieties of grapes and while the exact origin of the Sémillon grape is difficult to establish, it's home is considered to be the South West of France - more specifically Bordeaux, where it is the most widely planted white grape in the region.
When it comes to food, this wine is well matched with grilled fish, smoked salmon, creamy pastas, lemon based sauces, shellfish or oysters and most other seafood as well as semi-hard cheese. You will never be sorry if you have a couple of bottles of both young and aged Semillon handy for a seafood luncheon.
While Semillon has called France home for centuries, the grape made it's way to South Africa, Chile and Australia where it was planted with considerable success. In Australia, it is made in both sweet and dry styles. At one stage Semillon was considered to be the most planted grape in the world. In the 1820's the grape covered over 90 percent of South Africa's vineyards, where it was known as Wyndruif, meaning "wine grape" and in the 1950's, Chile's vineyards were made up of over 75% Semillon.
LAMBLOCH 2013 SEMILLON Ranked among the Top 10 New Wineries in Australia, at Lambloch Estate they believe that great wine takes time and patience, mature vines to give the wine that greater concentration of flavour and well-chosen vineyard sites. As a result, there are few better places to grow grapes than the Lambloch Estate vineyards on Broke Road with its red volcanic loam soils and where the gently sloping vineyards provide excellent exposure of fruit to the sun. Together these two features underlie the quality of the wines at Lambloch Estate. The Lambloch 2013 Semillon is a classic style with soft delicate citrus aromas on the nose coupled with a palate that is smooth and well rounded. Rich lemon and lime flavours that provide a lingering fresh finish make this a wonderful wine for any occasion. This Semillon is a delight on its own or perfectly matched with any seafood dish.

13-15 MORPETH CHAPEL JAZZ FESTIVAL throughout Morpeth
Morpeth Chapel Jazz is a joint venture of the three churches of Morpeth. Until the 1980’s, Morpeth was a rundown village in fear of demolition. Then it was slowly rejuvenated as a destination and what was left of its charming buildings rescued from the bulldozer. A few local businesses joined together to establish a small jazz festival in the bicentenary year of 1988. The jazz festival soon acquired a life of its own and by 2000 had developed into a major event on the Morpeth Calendar.
This year’s event is expected to attract more than 20,000 people to the seven participating Lovedale wineries - Allandale Winery, Tatler Wines, Gartelmann Hunter Valley, Wandin Hunter Valley, Saltire Wines, Sandalyn Estate and Emmas Cottage Vineyard. This progressive style lunch also involves a selection of the regions finest restaurants and live entertainment - leaving Long Lunch-goers to wine, dine and dance their way around the participating wineries over the weekend enjoying a glass of wine, gourmet food and fabulous music. For more information on menus, wine, live entertainment or to purchase tickets, visit www.lovedalelonglunch.com.au
