FROM THE EDITORS “Vintage” is the name given to the process of picking grapes and creating the finished product. In some parts of the world, it’s also known as ‘the crush.’ It sounds simple, but it’s a long journey from the grapevine to the glass, with plenty of challenges along the way. This month we speak to some of our favourite vignerons about the process and about the 2017 Vintage in particular. With blue skies and sunny days leading up to this year’s harvest, the consensus is that this Vintage will be an absolute corker. Australia is a land of ‘big things’. There’s the Golden Guitar in Tamworth, the Big Banana in Coffs – even the Big Marino in Goulburn! There are around 150 big things around the country, including the Big Kookaburra. Dance through Pop Music History at...

Hot Dub Wine Machine! Following the success of the inaugural Hot Dub Wine Machine in the lush surrounds of the Serafino Winery in McLaren Vale in 2016, the concept has now been extended to take in Australia’s other wine regions, including the Hunter Valley’s Hope Estate on March 18th. Hot Dub Wine Machine is the exciting new chapter in the career of Sydney DJ Tom Loud, whose unique, audiovisual party Hot Dub Time Machine takes audiences on a journey through pop music history, in the world’s first time-travelling dance party. Songs are played in chronological order with massive mashed visuals all scratched live from vinyl turntables. Described as “the best dance party you’ll ever go to” by Perth Now, Hot Dub Time Machine has become one of the largest ticket selling electronic acts in Australia. Since debuting in Sydney in 2011, Hot Dub Time Machine continues to draw huge crowds, both at home and internationally. Loud has spent the last 12 months playing sell out shows around the world, including shows at London’s historic forum, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and headlining the recent Falls Festivals around Australia. Loud reveals that his team is always trying to evolve Hot Dub Time Machine to ensure “every time people come to our show, it’s more epic, more exciting. We decided the next step was to turn the set into a boutique all day event – take it al fresco with a scenic location, and get some great Aussie bands and DJs on board. Someone suggested the name Wine Machine, and it took off from there.” Hot Dub Wine Machine will see Hot Dub perform his own signature twohour set, as well as his handpicked line-up of the cream of Australia’s music scene, including PNAU, Miami Horror, Paces, Young Franco, Tom Tilley and many more. PNAU made their mark on the music scene thanks to their highenergy live shows, and they will be playing their first live shows in over five years at Hot Dub Wine Machine! “PNAU are absolute dance music royalty – an act that have always been hugely respected on the Australian dance scene, and by myself as an artist,” says an enthusiastic Loud. “Their new track is so strong, and we couldn’t be more honoured

PNAU

to be hosting their live return on our Wine Machine stage – it’s going to be epic!” Melbourne’s popular psychedelic indie-electronic adventurers, Miami Horror will also be hitting the Wine Machine stage to entertain the masses after spending the past couple of years in the USA. The boutique atmosphere of the event is guaranteed by a capped capacity – ensuring there will be plenty of space to find a comfortable spot to relax while taking in sweeping views of the scenic vineyards. There will also be a range of premium wines, craft beers and a frenzy of local flavours from fresh finger food to delicious baos and burgers for partygoers to refuel after hours of singing and dancing. Summer Tour Following the success of last year’s event, The Red Hot Summer Tour returns to Roche Estate on Saturday 25th March, with one of the biggest line‐ups of Australian music royalty to share the same stage. Promoter Duane McDonald says the 2017 tour will continue to promote some of the best Australian music on the scene today. “We have been proud to present some legendary artists on the line‐ups for the Red Hot Summer Tour over the years,” he says. “This year we are proud to bring the mighty Icehouse to the line‐up for the very first time, as well as welcoming back some artists who have made the festival unforgettable over the years. The 2017 [tour] will rock the socks off of music fans.” Icehouse has become one of Australia’s most iconic bands, with eight Top 10 albums and more than 30 Top 40 singles. They have managed to transcend age groups over their 40‐year career, with generations of music lovers being brought up on hits such as Crazy, Electric Blue, We Can Get Together, Great Southern Land, Hey Little Girl and Man of Colours to name a few. Joining Icehouse on The Red Hot Summer Tour will be Aussie music legends James Reyne, Daryl Braithwaite, Shannon Noll, Dragon and Pseudo Echo. From his time fronting the legendary Australian Crawl through to his successful solo career, James Reyne has been treading the boards in the rock halls of Australian music for decades. As a prolific songwriter and strong vocalist, it’s no surprise that James has won accolade after accolade for his contribution to music. When it comes to recognisable voices in the Australian music scene, there are few as impressive as Daryl Braithwaite. Starting his career in the 1970s as the front man for Sherbet, Daryl then set out on his own solo career in the 1980s, releasing smash hit singles such as One Summer, As The Days Go By and The Horses.

With ten consecutive Top 10 singles in the charts, it’s fair to say that Shannon Noll is one of Australia’s most loved artists, capturing the hearts of music fans with his raw, gifted rock voice. The country boy from Condobolin first came to prominence as runner‐up on the first series of Australian Idol in 2003. Since then, Shannon Noll has released five Top 10 albums, including two number‐one multi‐platinum sellers and been nominated for several ARIA awards. Iconic bands don’t get much bigger than Dragon. Relocating to Australia from New Zealand in the 1970s, the band made an indelible mark, with songs like April Sun in Cuba, Are You Old Enough and Rain becoming ingrained into the Australian psyche. In recent years, established solo artist Mark Williams has taken over the front man reigns and the new line‐up has been touring the country ever since, garnering themselves a whole new generation of fans. Pseudo Echo will be bringing all the fabulousness of the 1980s to The Red Hot Summer Tour, with their electro‐pop sound still guaranteed to get audiences on their feet. The band are well‐known for their classic hits such as Funky Town, Don’t Go, Living In A Dream, Listening and A Beat For You. They have sold more than one million albums worldwide, as well as celebrating seven Top 10 singles in Australia and a number‐one single on the US Billboard Dance Charts. A number of the other Red Hot Summer Tour shows around Australia have already sold out, so music fans are encouraged not to delay in getting their tickets to one of the best value for money concert experiences in Australia. VINEYARD

Grape

FROM

TO GLASS!

IT’S A LONG JOURNEY FROM GRAPEVINE TO GLASS, WITH PLENTY OF POTENTIAL PROBLEMS TO OVERCOME ALONG THE WAY.

WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN

“The grapes for our Sparkling red were the last picked and as a mixed variety will have lovely cassis and spice notes - we are looking forward to tasting this one this year as the fruit was exceptional.” The warmer weather did bring with it one problem though, with most of their Semillon crop decimated by large flocks of rosellas.

But with blue skies and sunny days shining on the lead-up to this year’s vintage, Hunter Valley vignerons are hoping the outcome will be an absolute corker.

Birds proved an issue for a number of vineyards across the Hunter, with Kelman Vineyard at Pokolbin also losing a portion of their fruit to the flying pests according to Ian Winter.

Grape picking began at many vineyards in mid-January, with most of the harvest wrapped up by the end of February.

“This year has been particularly hot, so the vineyard has been quite free of disease; the biggest problem has been the birds,” he said.

While the process in recent years has been hindered by an onslaught of wet weather in the final weeks and months before harvest, the period leading up to the 2017 vintage delivered conditions ideal for the final ripening of the fruit.

“This has been the worst year we have had for bird damage. It is hard to put a figure on the damage but we will have lost around 10 to 15 percent of our fruit.”

The favourable weather patterns have left Hunter winemakers and vignerons upbeat, with good quality fruit and high yield crops expected to produce an excellent vintage for both Hunter Valley reds and whites.

Losses aside, Ian was also positive about what the vintage may bring once it reaches the bottle, with quality crops of grapes gathered for their Sparkling Chardonnay base, Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Tempranillo and Muscat.

Therese Kramer, from Emma’s Cottage Vineyard in Lovedale, said the “The quality is definitely up on last year, as the last few years the rain has warm weather led to an early ripening of their fruit, with the first picking not been kind to us,” Ian said. beginning two weeks earlier than usual on January 16. “Across the board, we are very happy with this year’s vintage. Our The drier conditions also saw an improved fruit quality compared to winemaker thought that the Chardonnay for our Sparkling base and previous years when the harvest was hampered by the presence of Shiraz were our standout varieties, with the other varieties very good.” downy mildew. While the quality is also expected to be high over at Sandalyn Wilderness “The weather was fantastic, although the many very hot days did cause Estate, Sally Whaling said it was hard to come to terms with the sheer some issues with sunburn on some of the grapes,” Therese said. quantity of fruit stripped from the vine by birds and other animals. “Our first pick was for our Sparkling base, and this year we managed to pick a good quantity of Pinot Noir to provide that lovely richness to the base wine – the fruit this year had a beautiful flavour with cherry and raspberry characters. “The Chardonnay was light and fresh with more apple and pear characteristics than last year. Our Shiraz fruit was rich and luscious dark berries with that classic light pepper. Our winemaker has said that the fruit ‘looked good’.

thb 10 | MARCH 2017

“Unfortunately we lost most of our grape to a very large influx of lorikeets and kangaroos eating the grape this year,” she said. “I have never seen them in such numbers before. We only started picking February and finished early February because we only had a very small harvest. But while there will be very little quantity, (the quality of) this year’s vintage will be good.” Among the luckier producers were Tamburlaine Organic Wines at Pokolbin, who did not experience any notable issues with pests and were

“What was interesting was the way the vines, which ‘shut down’ during extreme heat, continued to bounce back afterwards. This in part, contributed to what will be considered a stellar red year in particular.” Harvest was also without significant issues for Pokolbin’s Mistletoe Winery, which began its three-week period of picking at the end of January. Mistletoe proprietor Ken Sloan said while the overall quantity was about the same as previous years, the quality of the fruit is expected to produce a fine vintage.

"We expect that overall it will be a very good to excellent vintage with generous fruit-driven flavours across both white and red varieties." “Everything went very well, however with the dry heat we experienced, we had to irrigate judiciously so the vines would not suffer longer term problems from being allowed to get too dry.” All’s well that has ended well at Gartelmann Wines, with winery coowner Jorg Gartelmann sounding particularly positive in their early harvest report. He said the fluctuating temperatures, which saw particularly hot days followed by a milder spell, allowed the fruit to recover in time to be picked. “The Sparkling white base for our 2017 Blanc de Blancs was harvested early morning on January 13; it copped three consecutive hot days, but had a cooler day to recover before harvest,” he said. “(The fruit had) higher Baume to give more fruit intensity, marginally lower pH, which we want for taste, and slightly higher total acid. All this indicates that we can make a zestier but more delicate wine with lower residual sugar than the 2016.” The fruit for their Benjamin Semillon was also harvested following a period of hot days before a cooler change, with analysis indicating a slightly lower Baume to better retain the Semillon citrus and lime characteristic, marginally lower pH and slightly higher total acid. Jorg said this is likely to help produce a varietal that will be pleasing to their existing customers, while also allowing them to attract new Semillon lovers.

fortunate enough not to be affected by a number of fires that took hold in the region during the summer months. Their luck extended even to the timing of their harvest according to Managing Director and Chief Winemaker Mark Davidson, with the overall outcome expected to produce a “very good to brilliant” vintage. “We don’t make sparkling wine from Hunter fruit, so we started a little after some other vineyards, with Chardonnay and Verdelho for varietal white wine on January 18,” he said. “We timed the finish to perfection, with the Cabernet and Chambourcin coming off on Friday, February 17, just before a hail storm hit! We literally just had the last bin under cover when the hail started pelting, and lightning struck the paddock close by.” Mark noted their quantities were up on last year for their red wine grapes and down slightly for the whites. While this is a more unusual outcome in the Hunter, he thought it could perhaps be explained by the cool, wet start to the season. “With the exception of the slow start, the season had pretty good sporadic rainfall and no long wet periods just prior to harvest, as is sometimes the case,” he said.

With the picking all but over, now comes the long wait as winemakers work their magic on the fruit before it is unleashed on wine lovers from across the Hunter and further afield, who no doubt will offer their own opinions on what has already been a pleasing harvest for vignerons.

SO JUST WHAT IS VINTAGE? For the uninitiated, “vintage”' is the process of picking grapes (harvesting) and creating the finished product. In some parts of the world, it is also known as “the crush”. In the Hunter Valley, because of our warmer conditions, vintage can commence very early in January with Semillon being the first variety picked for sparkling wine, followed by Chardonnay, Semillon and Verdelho. The red varieties are picked after the whites, generally taking place late in January or early February. The winemakers and growers work closely together to determine the optimum time to pick the fruit to ensure the best wine quality. White grapes are pressed off the skins, the juice chilled to prevent oxidation, and inoculated with yeast. Red grapes are crushed and inoculated with yeast, and the ensuing fermentation on the skins allow for colour and flavour extraction.

March can be a continuance of harvest, depending on the temperatures and how the vintage year developed over the summer. Fermentations are monitored by checking how rapidly the grape sugars decline as the “The heat this year was notable of course – which led to a couple of major alcohol level increases. local fires. Fortunately, these were a distance from the main vineyards April is typically the completion of harvest. All the wines are now in the and at a time when the wind was blowing towards the coast. tanks or barrels. The winery crush equipment is thoroughly cleaned and “The extreme heat spikes were more frequent and longer than I have seen before – and this year the air with them was still and humid (more like tropical weather), which is unusual.

put to rest until next year. In the vineyard, the grower may perform some post-harvest irrigation and fertilisation of the vines before they go dormant.

The man lauded for revolutionising the ancient art of ventriloquism, David Strassman is back with his brand‐new show “iTedE”, an uproarious take on our technology‐laden lives. The sharp‐tongued Chuck Wood and loveable Ted E. Bare have been thrust into the world of social media, constantly on their iPads and iPhones and not interacting with the real world. With everyone connected to social media and the internet 24/7, will Strassman get them back under control? Strassman’s “iTedE” introduces amazing new technology that brings the world’s most advanced Puppetronics to the stage. In a world‐first feat, Strassman simultaneously operates five characters in a hilarious six‐way conversation, using a handheld wireless remote control that sets new standards in ventriloquism.

Combined with cutting‐edge lighting and a state‐of‐the‐art production, Strassman and his well‐known puppet characters will bring mayhem and theatrics to a set designed by renowned New York stage designer Luke Cantarella.

Since his early performances in the 1990s, Strassman has been embraced throughout Australia and has had numerous television appearances as well as his own show on Channel Nine Strassman, with subsequent series on ITV England and TV3 New Zealand.

David Strassman started his career as a street performer in New York City, and after being accepted to the "invite only" 2nd year at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he rapidly built a career in the comedy club boom that made Seinfeld and others into household names. Since then, he has toured throughout the world, performing at London’s West End, New York’s Off Broadway and the Edinburgh Fringe.

As part of his national tour, Strassman will perform “iTedE” at Cessnock Leagues Club March 22nd and Club Maitland City March 23rd. For tickets and further information visit www.davidstrassman.com

“iTedE” will be sure to delight audiences with side‐splitting comedy, jaw‐dropping puppetronics and a visual feast on stage. It’s the ultimate night out.

8 Great Producers

In a world first, two of music’s most iconic artists Blondie and Cyndi Lauper are teaming up to co-headline an absolute cracker of an Australian tour, including an a day on the green show at Bimbadgen Estate on Saturday, April 1st. Cyndi Lauper and Blondie have both enjoyed great success here for four decades, fuelled by a stream of timeless hits that are still popular today. Both Cyndi and Debbie Harry have always escaped the usual clichés of women in rock. They are unquestionably two of the most important and influential women to have graced the stage and are thrilled to be touring together. When asked, what audiences can expect from this Australian tour, Debbie Harry said “all the songs and music you want to hear from us and much much more…. We’re looking to have the best tour in OZ ever!” “Blondie were the true trailblazers of the New York City new wave and punk scenes,” says Cyndi Lauper. “As a young artist, they had such a big impact on me. I just thought that Debbie was so cool. She is still a hero of mine. I’m so excited to do this tour of Australia with them. We are going to have a blast!” The a day on the green show will boast an equally impressive undercard with The Clouds reforming especially for the tour and exciting new talents, Montaigne and Alex Lahey. With all artists featuring a female lead singer, a day on the green will be supporting She Who Rocks with this tour. Dedicated to highlighting women who have shaped rock music and in doing so have motivated and inspired, She Who Rocks digital channel boast huge engagement by passionate fans, while a compilation album hit the ARIA Top 10. MADE WITH LOVE WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN There is nothing finer than wearing a piece of jewellery that has been hand crafted with skill, care and love. For visitors to the Handmade in the Hunter Markets, it is a feeling they experience whenever they stop by the stall of Annette Crichton-Walsh, founder of House of Coco – Fine Jewellery. The Lake Macquarie-based fine manufacturing jeweller has been a regular at the Pokolbin markets for the past 12 months, with her exquisite gold, silver and platinum creations garnering a strong following.

Annette says there is something special about the Handmade in the Hunter Markets and their clientele. “As all the stalls are always only both local and handmade products, the customers we attract are fully appreciative of the unique items that we sell,” she said. “They understand the value of the items they are buying and that an enormous amount of creativity, time and sustained effort is required to keep producing such high-quality merchandise.” A university-trained graphic designer, Annette completed her three-year trade qualification to become a fine manufacturing jeweller in 2013. “The course is incredibly hard to get into, and there are not many women who are fine manufacturing jewellers as it is a male-dominated trade,” she said. “I have always designed and made clothing, jewellery and furniture since I was a teenager, and I have a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, so the designing part is relatively easy for me. I think I have more ideas than I will be able to make in my lifetime.” While Annette said the inspiration for her jewellery can “come from anywhere”, she also loves working with clients to take their ideas and make them into something truly unique. “The best thing is that it’s a one-off piece that no one else has and the client’s input has helped create that,” she said. “It means that even the people that are not necessarily creative themselves can feel the pleasure in the design process and have input in creating and designing something that is incredibly special and meaningful to them.” To find out more about House of Coco – Fine Jewellery, check out www.houseofcocofinejewellery.com.au or visit this month’s Handmade in the Hunter Markets, which will be held at Kevin Sobels Wines on March 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th.

WE’RE TRIPLING THE ST PATRICKS PARTY AT HARRIGAN’S!

St Patrick's Day at

Harrigan's

Every year on 17th March, all around the world, the Irish and the Irish‐ at‐heart celebrate St Patrick’s Day. What originated as a religious feast day for the patron Saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with dancing, parades, iconic Irish foods and a whole lot of green!

With live music and traditional dancing, surrounded by authentic Irish décor, beautiful gardens, vineyards and mountains, Harrigan’s Irish Pub is the perfect venue to celebrate St Pat’s day in the Hunter. But why party for one day, when you can party for three? This year, Harrigan's Irish Pub will be celebrating St Patrick’s Weekend from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th March. All weekend, Harrigan’s Irish Pub will have patrons celebrating like true Irishmen and women with Guinness flowing and Irish bands, Irish dancers and a traditional pipe band performing each day, ensuring everyone gets in the St Paddy’s Day spirit! Guests are encouraged to dress up in the traditional green colour that marks the special day, with plenty of giveaways on offer. The traditional Harrigan’s Australian Irish Bistro will be serving all the old favourites including the famous Beef and Guinness Pie, Fish and Chips and a few special Irish dishes to get into the spirit of the day. For further information or make a booking visit www.harrigans.com.au

Did you know? • St Patrick wasn’t even Irish. His parents were Roman citizens living in Scotland or Wales. • St Patrick’s Day was first celebrated in Australia in Sydney in 1810, when Lachlan Macquarie, the Governor of New South Wales, provided entertainment for Irish convict workers. • For most of the 20th century, St Patrick’s Day was considered a strictly religious holiday in Ireland, which meant that the nation’s pubs were closed for business on March 17. In 1970, the day was converted to a national holiday, and the stout resumed flowing. • Contrary to popular belief, the Irish are not the biggest alcohol drinkers in the world. Ireland ranks 7th in the world for beer consumption (Australia ranks 19th), and surprisingly, they rank 3rd in the world for tea consumption…

One of these areas is LOVEDALE, and it’s one of the Hunter Valleys premier wine growing areas where, with 16 cellar doors and 12 restaurants and cafés as well as a choice of gourmet foods, the pleasures of eating and drinking are celebrated daily. At the core, of every visit to the Hunter Valley is the quality wine and Sandalyn Estate on Wilderness Road, with its Tuscan-style cellar door, is an excellent example of warm Lovedale hospitality, coupled with fine wines. Their extensive wine range includes NV Sparkling Cuvee, Fuchs NV Sparkling Fuchsia, Verdelho, Semillon Verdelho, Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Semillon Late Harvest.

SANDALYN ESTATE For decades the Hunter Valley has been Sydney’s playground, a place to enjoy a weekend away in the country with family and friends all washed down with a glass of local Shiraz, Semillon, Verdelho or Chardonnay. Being the largest and oldest wine region in the country, you can be forgiven for thinking that Hunter Valley wine country starts and ends in Pokolbin. The reality is, there are several other wine growing areas within the Hunter Valley, all distinctively different and unique in their own way.

Owners, Sandra and Lindsay Whaling, with their daughter Sally (who now also works in the business), established their vineyard in Lovedale back in 1985 on an elevated block that was originally part of the Old John Hunter Estate. Back then, there were only six wineries in the Lovedale area and approximately 35 wineries in the entire Lower and Upper Hunter Valley. Today, there 16 wineries/cellar doors in Lovedale and about 200 wineries making up the Lower and Upper Hunter wine trails.

For Lindsay, who has a background in civil engineering, the romantic lure of owning a vineyard and producing his own wine was strong enough to make the decision to make a career move and purchase the vineyard in Lovedale to become both a vigneron and winemaker. For Sandra, who is the great-great-granddaughter of Phillip and Elizabeth Fuchs, who in 1852 established a vineyard north of Maitland before later establishing vineyards on the banks of the Nepean River at Narellan, it was an

opportunity to carry on one of Australia’s earliest pioneering wine names. As a result, the FUCH’s name is represented in Sandalyn’s Sparkling Wines. Sandalyn Estate is also one of the founding members of the now well established Lovedale Long Lunch. Held amongst seven participating vineyards in Lovedale, the annual Lovedale Long Lunch was started in 1994 to promote Lovedale as a premium wine producing area and tourist attraction. Now in its 24th year, this popular food and wine trail event has done just that, attracting large and enthusiastic crowds eager to savour the excellent food and wine from the region. This year, the Lovedale Long Lunch will be held on the weekend of 20th and 21st of May and is expected to attract more than 20,000 people over the two-day event. With accommodation to suit all styles and tastes close by and with their recently opened café serving coffee and a delicious range of cakes, Sandalyn Estate is the perfect place to spend an hour or a day. We recommend testing your culinary skills by participating in their “hands on” pasta making classes held in the underground cellar. Presided over by their experienced chef, the classes combine the character and diversity of Hunter olive oils and wine, with the art of traditional pasta making, blending the skills of the winemaker with that of fine Mediterranean cuisine in an atmosphere not unlike southern Europe. Sandalyn Estate continues to grow and evolve, and apart from their premium wines, new café and pasta making classes, they also make vinegar from their aged red and white wines, provide olive oil and balsamic vinegar tastings and sell specialty gourmet produce, puddings and handcrafted Turkish Delight from the cellar door. It’s well worth a visit and when you are there, make sure you pick up a bottle of their unique NV Sandalyn Estate Sparkling Fuchsia – the perfect celebratory wine and excellent with caviar smoked salmon and shellfish.

SANDALYN ESTATE Wander the wild side and enjoy the rich heritage and pristine beauty of the Lovedale region along Wilderness Road, one of Australia's oldest and most historic wine trails. Fuchs family named wines have been associated with premium wines since 1626. The tradition continues in the Hunter region with our range of family-produced Sparkling wines.

LOCAL

coal industry that had taken off in the surrounding South Maitland Coalfields the richest coal deposit in the Southern Hemisphere. The first planned Crown town in NSW, it took its name from a local Aboriginal word, which has a meaning similar to “the beginning” or “the first”. Reaching its peak in the mid-1920s, the coal trade in the area had all but ended in the mid-1960s, by which time towns like Kurri Kurri had grown into well-populated areas.

Kurri Kurri

Various light industrial businesses then took off in the Kurri Kurri area, with the most significant, the aluminium smelter, providing jobs for the local townsfolk for many decades to come. In more recent times, Kurri Kurri has been working to diversify its economic base and has looked to tourism as one of its future drivers.

Gets Nostalgic!

Located in the heart of the Hunter and at the gateway to the nearby Hunter Valley vineyards, Kurri Kurri has always been a thoroughfare for tourists exploring the surrounding region. But the advent of some community projects and events in the past decade have helped put the town on the tourist map as a destination in itself.

WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN

The Big Kookaburra has certainly proved a worthy addition to Australia’s “big things” list, which is now said to include around 150 sculptures and novelty attractions at sites around the country.

Australia is a land of “big” things. There’s the Golden Guitar in Tamworth and the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour, the Big Merino in Goulburn, not to mention the Big Pineapple on the Sunshine Coast. While many of these iconic roadside sculptures have been around for decades, one of the more recently constructed large-scale tourist attractions can be found right here in the Hunter – the Big Kookaburra. Located in Rotary Park at Kurri Kurri, the 4.5m high steel sculpture was created in 2009 as a gift to the town by what was, at the time, the area’s biggest employer, Hydro Aluminium, in recognition of their 40th anniversary. While the smelter has since closed, the Big Kookaburra remains, becoming a symbol of one of the new economic drivers of the once thriving industrial town – tourism. In the beginning, though, Kurri Kurri was the largest in a string of small town centres that popped up in the early 1900's to support the thriving

Tourists are often seen stopping to have their photograph taken with the lifelike bird sculpture. However, it’s not the only piece of art that has visitors flocking to Kurri Kurri. The area is also home to more than 55 large-scale murals, which have been painted on the sides of buildings in Kurri Kurri and surrounding towns. It is now recognised as the largest collection of outdoor art in mainland Australia and has seen Kurri Kurri become one of the bestknown mural towns in the world. Creating a pictorial history of the region, the murals depict everything from Kurri Kurri’s coal mining past to its sporting community, pioneering

all things rock ‘n’ roll, it is a showcase of classic cars, music, fashion and dancing across a range of free and ticketed events and a good oldfashioned street party. This year’s festival will run from March 24-26 and has a stellar program of events in store. It will kick up its heels on the Friday with a Family Fun Night at Rotary Park from 5pm to 8pm. The perfect way to launch into the event, it will include an evening of rock and roll with Jumpin’ Jukebox and the chance to pick up some fancy new dance steps as Eagle Rocks demonstrate their skills on the dance floor.

population, cultural pastimes and industrial heritage, with every painting also including the symbol of Kurri Kurri – a kookaburra. One of the most striking is painted on the side of The Station Hotel as you first come into Kurri Kurri and is a re-creation of a famous photograph taken by Newcastle Herald snapper Darren Pateman. Captured during coverage of the bushfires around Abernethy and Kearsley in October 2002, the photograph shows a group of cricketers playing on while fire rages in the background. The match, at Baddeley Park in Cessnock, was abandoned shortly after the photo was taken when the wind changed and the flames started moving towards the ground. The image was painted on the side of the Kurri Kurri pub as it was the sponsor of one of the teams immortalised in the photograph. In the past Kurri Kurri has celebrated “Mural Month” in September to celebrate the popular attraction, however, visitors can undertake a tour by one of the local guides at any time during the year, or simply pick up a handy mural map at the Kurri Kurri Visitor Centre for a self-directed tour. The mural project was initiated by the Towns With Heart committee, a community group formed to develop projects that attracted more visitors to the town, diversify employment opportunities and create and support events that promote the area. This last aim was brought to life by the committee with the establishment of the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival in 2004. Now in its 17th year, the celebration of all things 1950's and ’60's attracts more than 30,000 people from across Australia to Kurri Kurri for the three-day event. The event is a fun and frivolous step back in time to a bygone era, which has established itself as one of the Hunter’s premier festivals. Featuring

The action will pick up a beat over the weekend, with non-stop music and free entertainment in the park each day from 8am to 4pm. Saturday will feature performances from the likes of Voodoo Rhythm Shakers, the Marching Koalas and the Newcastle 50s Rock N Roll dance group, while Sunday will see Jukebox Jive, DJ Gav and the All Shook Up Dance Studio take to the stage. Elvis impersonator Steve Head will add a prerequisite taste of “The King” to the festivities on both days, while Best Dressed Parades and a retro fashion show will ensure the spirit of the ’50s and ’60s comes to life visually throughout the event. Shannon’s Show and Shine is a must-see for car lovers, with around 500 classic cars and hot rods lining Lang and Barton streets throughout the weekend as their owners compete for the title of the most immaculately maintained and presented vehicle. Ensuring there is something for everyone across the weekend, an impressive Retro Market Place will be set up in Rotary Park showcasing some of the best nostalgia-themed, retro and vintage market stalls from across Australia, while a sideshow alley in the Kurri Kurri Workers Club carpark will provide plenty of entertainment for the kids. A range of ticketed events will also be held throughout the festival, with everything from a retro high tea and official after party to a high school prom dinner dance and Rock N Roll Express steam train ride from Pelaw Main to Richmond Vale. The train ride takes visitors to the Richmond Vale Railway Museum, which is another heritage highlight popular with tourists visiting Kurri Kurri. The Museum was established on the site of the former Richmond Main Colliery and was created to preserve the railway and mining heritage of J&A Brown and the Hunter Valley. However, the tourist attraction is best known for its fleet of working steam locomotives, which provide train rides to visitors on various dates throughout the year, including during the Nostalgia Festival. VARIETY

CHARDONNAY On Trend Again It’s one of the world’s greatest grape varieties that grows well in a variety of locations throughout the world and is also an important component of many sparkling wines, including Champagne. Ranging from un-wooded, light and fresh to full-bodied barrel fermented and aged, this versatile grape can produce a range of styles that can be matched with just about any food.

wines that also had strong secondary characters. These wines were big, rich and full-bodied with most not lasting more than a few years. You can have too much of a good thing though, and this peak in popularity in the late 1980’s and early 1990's gave way to a change in tastes, with Chardonnay consumers becoming disenfranchised by the buttery taste and high level of oak used in these wines. Chardonnay sales declined as consumer tastes turned towards lighter wines such as Pinot Grigio and the crisp cool-climate Sauvignon Blancs.

In recent years, we have witnessed the most remarkable change in premium Australian Chardonnay. Gone are the days of the fat, golden, oak-lavished style with Chardonnay making a comeback with styles that are lighter, more elegant, a little more subtle and of course with less oak. Cheese, Please!

Wine and cheese are two of life's great culinary pleasures and have a strong affinity going back thousands of years. Both are fermented products and require patience, care and moderate temperatures to mature naturally. Although a highly subjective topic, matching cheese and wine can be a great deal of fun and also one of the most difficult things to get right. Perhaps the best method to pair wines with cheeses is to go by the same simple standard that applies to all regional cuisine and wine pairing - location. The connection between the food of a region and the wine therein is a strong one and one that has been created over many hundreds of years. Often the wine from a particular area reflects the style, weight, flavours and aromas of the local diet, and vice versa.

While there are no hard and fast rules to wine and cheese matching, the following “rules of thumb” tend to work well: • Match white wines with soft cheeses and those with stronger flavours • Match red wines with hard cheeses and those with milder flavours • Fruity, sweet wines and dessert wines work well with a broad range of cheeses and therefore the safest option when presented with a cheese platter • The more pungent the cheese, the sweeter the wine should be Below is a rough guide of the most common cheese and wine pairings. Cream and Soft Cheeses (Brie, Camembert and Ricotta): Because these cheeses can be very rich, and mouth coating, they need to be paired with wine that is high in acidity. When it comes to the white wines, Chardonnay is a good bet, as is a Sparkling White Wine and Pinot Gris. A Semillon Sauvignon Blanc or a Sauvignon Blanc is fantastic, and a nice Riesling or a Gewurztraminer will be good. If you just must do a red wine with these cheeses, try a Merlot or a Pinot Noir. Goats Cheese: This cheese can be very tangy, quite salty and have an intense flavour. The tang of the cheese and the saltiness of it requires a high acid white wine as it would clash with red wine or another type of wine. The perfect wine for pairing with goat cheese is Riesling, Chenin Blanc or Sauvignon Blanc. Mild Cheeses (Mozzarella, Monterey Jack and some milder Cheddar): These cheeses have some flavour to them and go well with a variety of wines due to their texture and mild flavour. The best wines to serve with these cheeses are full bodied white wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio and Viognier. If you'd like to match a red wine, make sure you stick to the lighter type of red wines because you don't want the red wine to overpower the cheese. Medium Cheeses (Cheddar, Colby, Edam, Gouda): A dry white Riesling or even a Pinot Gris are a good match, as well as light and moderate red wines such as Merlot, Pinot Noir, and even Shiraz.

Pungent Cheeses (Blue Cheese, Parmesan, mature aged Cheddar): These cheeses have very distinct and intense flavours and demand a full, tannic red, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cabernet Merlot or Shiraz that will stand up to a strong flavoured cheese. Port is the classic accompaniment to most cheese and goes particularly well with strongly flavoured ones. Smoked Cheese: The salty, bacon taste of smoked cheese is so distinctive that it is tough to find a wine that can live up to it, without altering the flavour of the wine. An Australian Shiraz would be the most preferred match here. A sweet dessert wine (Sauternes) will also withstand the smoky taste. These are just a few examples of the hundreds of wonderful pairings between wine and cheese. Don't hesitate to experiment as there are plenty of exotic and interesting cheeses out there just waiting for a glass of wine and a palette to play with. If you love hand-made cheese products, you now have the chance to sample the best locally made cheese at The Hunter Valley Cheese Factory located at McGuigan Wine Cellars - 447 McDonalds Road, Pokolbin.
