We’re really excited to launch our fresh new look this month with Your Hunter Valley Blackboard. Sporting a beautiful new banner and a fun, modern design it’s still the Number 1 read for visitors to the Hunter Valley (and quite a few locals too!) Who doesn’t love a good festival? According to the ever-knowledgeable Wikipedia, a festival is “an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and centring on some characteristic aspect of that community and its traditions.” It goes on to say food is such a vital resource that many festivals are associated with harvest time. Wikipedia really must have had the Hunter Valley in mind when they penned this definition, as May is well and truly the month of eating, drinking and being merry in Wine Country – and yes – much of the celebrating is centred around wine and food! The Hunter Valley Wine & Food Festival involves two months’ worth of partying and numerous special events, dinners, awards, entertainment and tastings. Then there’s the Lovedale Long Lunch, Grapest 5k Run, Flickerfest, Heroes of the Hunter and the Hunter Valley Wine Festival – just to name a

few! You can read all about these events and plenty more in this month’s issue. It’s not unusual to have views of a fairway from your front door, with golf course estates popping up all over the place. But to live life in a communityowned vineyard – well, that’s something only one place in Australia can offer and that’s Kelman Estate. At the heart of the estate is a flourishing vineyard producing an extensive range of awardwinning wines. In this issue we spoke with Kelman Estate’s Head of Wine Production, Darryl Ede to find out more. Don’t get so wrapped up in the festival spirit that you forget about Mother’s Day. Of course, just like any other special occasion, we celebrate this in style in Wine Country and in this issue, you’ll find loads of ideas for different ways to spoil your Mum. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums.

AN EYE FOR COLOUR LEADS TO

Stunning Pieces WORDS Michelle Meehan

Leah Balaam has always loved making her own jewellery. But after dabbling in the pastime simply for fun during her younger years, it wasn’t until more recently that the Gillieston Heights woman decided to turn her passion into a part-time profession. Almost a year-and-a-half ago Leah launched lily+ted designs as a way of channelling her creativity into a format that could be enjoyed by others. Under the label, she creates and sells a range of handcrafted jewellery, art and homewares, with her distinctive designs showcasing her love of colour and nature. “I have always had a love for creating,” Leah said.

“When I was younger I enjoyed beading with my friend, and in my early 20s I dabbled in some more jewellery making, but it wasn’t until after I had my children that I began to pick back up my love and need to create, with not only jewellery but art and homewares as well. “Lily+ted designs was started one year and four months ago - the name is actually the name of my two dogs as I found it catchy and the names work well together.” What also works well is Leah’s eye for colour, with her resin and acrylic based creations providing a stunning statement piece for the home or eye-catching accessory for setting off any outfit. “I make statement stud earrings (20mm), mini stud earrings (10mm) and pendants. I also do resin and acrylic flow paintings and homewares including serving boards and trays, trinket trays, wall art and clocks,” she said. “I love that the designs and colour combinations can be endless and I love the feeling it gives creating something yourself and that it may make someone else happy also. “I’m particularly inspired by the simple things in life like colour, nature, emotions and letting my inner creativity flow. I am especially inspired when people enjoy my products.” While asking an artist to pick their favourite work is like asking a mother to pick her favourite child – an impossible task – Leah said she did have a soft spot for her statement earrings. “I particularly like my 20mm statement stud earrings that are made using laser cut wood as a base then I do a fluid painting onto them and coat with resin, making each earring unique,” she said. “I love bringing colour and beauty into the lives of my customers.” With plans to expand her line to include dangle earrings, additional pendants and more artworks this year, Leah is sure to have plenty of exciting new surprises in store for customers both old and new. You can check out her work at her Facebook page @lilyandteddesigns or by stopping by her stall at the Handmade in the Hunter Markets, which will return to Kevin Sobels Wines from 9am to 3pm on May 12 and 26.

For an altogether sweet experience, a visit to Sabor in the Hunter’s Dessert Bar is a MUST! Pair something scrumptious with a delicious Hunter Valley wine... it’s a unique Hunter Valley experience that you can only enjoy at Sabor in the Hunter Dessert Bar. Learn to cook Spanish churros at the Verandah Restaurant

WORDS Michelle Meehan

When it comes to opportunities for wining and dining, the Hunter Valley is second to none. Home to one of Australia’s premium wine-growing regions, the Hunter is also well known as a hot spot for fine dining and fresh produce. While anytime is a good time to check out what’s going on around the vineyards, May marks the start of a particularly purple patch of events and festivals, providing countless options for residents and visitors alike to eat, drink and be merry. Tuck straight into a feast for the eyes, ears and stomachs at the Hunter Valley Wine, Food and Film Festival. Presented by the Around Hermitage Wine and Food Trail and now in its third year, the festival takes place during the first weekend in May and last weekend in June, kicking off with Flickerfest at Peter Drayton Wines’ Ironbark Hill Brewhouse on Saturday, May 5. The short film festival, which debuted at Bondi Beach in January and is now travelling around the country, will visit the Hunter for the second consecutive year for a screening of the “Best of Australian” short films. With seven 20-minute films on offer, tickets are $20 for the films only or $55, which also includes a tasting of three local wines, souvenir wine glass and platter of food.

A second food-inspired film event will be held at Peter Drayton Wines on Saturday, June 30, with the screening of Cookery for the Many, as well as for the Upper Ten Thousand. Produced by Around Hermitage’s Hunter Valley Wine Country Diners Club’, the film is based on Australia’s first cookery and home entertaining etiquette book, which was published in 1864 by Tasmanian aristologist Edward Abbott. The film investigates to what degree modern Australian dining and entertaining habits have been influenced by our European ancestors and features Hunter winemakers, chefs, historians and celebrities. Those looking to get a little more hands-on in their enjoyment of the region’s food and wine can check out this month’s cooking classes at The Verandah Restaurant. Led by local chef and restaurant owner Tim Suffell, the three-and-a-half hour classes on May 6 and 20 will teach participants how to cook a selection of traditional Spanish fare, including a tasty paella, sweetly delicious churros and a full-bodied sangria. If you want to sit back and relax while someone else does the cooking, the Verandah Restaurant will also take your tastebuds on an international adventure during their May 13 Locals’ Night. A firm favourite among Pokolbin residents and visitors alike, the popular monthly event starts with complimentary canapés and a glass of bubbly followed by a five-course tapas style degustation menu, which is based on a different country’s cuisine each time. The international flavours will also be out in force at Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen this month, with owners Matt and Jimmy Kerr hosting a Thai Feast on Saturday, May 12. The boys will also be putting their own delicious spin on the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser on May 24.

With seven sittings throughout the day, Nanna Kerr’s will be aiming to host 700 guests and raise $7000 for the charity. There will be two mouth-watering menus to choose from, including Healthy Hippy Happy, which features vegan and gluten-free options, as well as the Hunter Natural Beef Banquet, complete with barbecue brisket slider and mini steak and Shiraz pie. For those looking for a long lunch rather than a big morning tea, the Hunter is the place to be on May 19 and 20 when the ever-popular Lovedale Long Lunch puts on its progressive style party for thousands of food and wine lovers. A decadent line up of the Hunter Valley’s leading chefs will once again team up with seven of Lovedale’s finest wineries (Allandale Winery, Emma’s Cottage Vineyard, Gartelmann Wines, Saltire Estate, Sandalyn Wilderness Estate, Tatler Wines and Wandin Valley Estate) for a weekend of food, wine and fun. Aside from each of the estate’s premium local wines, long lunchers can also savour a selection of gourmet main, dessert and cheese offerings, soundtracked by some of the region’s finest musicians. For those looking for an experience they can take home with them, the monthly Handmade in the Hunter Market will return to Kevin Sobels Wines on May 12 and 26 featuring a range of locally-made and unique handcrafted items. The markets are also a great place to pick up some of the region’s finest food and produce, with stallholders including Hunter Valley Cookies, Moorebank Vineyard, Pink Whisk Chocolates, Pokolbin Purple, Tomalina Ridge Honey, Riverflats Estate and The Hot Chilli Woman among many others. There will be plenty to do when the sun goes down in the Hunter this month as well, including the Hunter Classics Fireside Tasting at RidgeView Restaurant on Saturday, May 19. The Hunter Valley Legends and Wine Industry Award winners will be announced at a black-tie dinner at Ben Ean Estate on Thursday, 24 May, with renowned wine judge Sally Evans MC on the evening. Awards will be handed out in four categories - Rising Star of the Year, Winemaker of the Year, Viticulturist of the Year and Cellar Door of the Year – and are designed to recognise and honour those who have made major contributions and excelled within the Hunter Valley wine and tourism industries. Last year’s winners included Mark Richardson (Tyrrell’s Wines), Andrew Pengilly (Tyrrell’s Wines), Rauri Donkin (Bimbadgen Estate) and Thomas Wines, with previous winners not eligible for renomination for a minimum of two years. Of course these are just the tip of the events iceberg in the region, with the renowned Hunter Valley Wine and Food Festival also kicking off this month. Presented by Wine Selectors, the festival features more than 40 events across May and June, showcasing everything from delicious gourmet dinners at award-winning restaurants, wine and cocktail master classes to food and wine trails, hands-on cooking classes and vertical tastings. Organisers have added 15 new experiences to the already bumper line-up for this year’s festival, while firm favourites including the Hunter Valley Wine Festival, Tyrrell’s Winemaker’s Luncheon, Glandore Estate Burning of the Barrel and By the Fireside with Lisa McGuigan at Hunter Valley Resort returning once again in 2018. ■

When you roll up to the large cellar door it won’t be one of the Hunter Valley’s famous Semillons or Shiraz being poured into your glass, but a sip of a spirit that’s experiencing significant appeal amongst consumers and in particular among younger drinkers. A trend that is no doubt encouraged by the establishment of specialised spirit and gin bars in some of Australia’s major cities, serving multiple spirit brands and spirit-based cocktails. Originally planned to be set up as a vineyard, the owners instead decided to tap into the growing interest in distilled spirits, and in particular vodka and gin. Vodka has long been the most popular spirit consumed in Australia, with data released by Roy Morgan Research revealing that just over 1.1 million adults drink vodka over an average four-week period. But while its popularity has remained virtually unchanged in the past five years, it certainly hasn’t gone unchallenged, with gin quickly gaining on its top-shelf rival. The tipple of choice of our grandmothers is now enjoying a surge in popularity and is on its way to replacing vodka as Australia's white spirt of choice, according to Roy Morgan Research. In a recent survey, gin has gained more popularity than vodka with the average number of monthly gin drinkers nationwide growing from 633,000 adults in March 2010 to 860,000 in 2015. Not surprisingly, given those statistics, business has been booming for Hunter Distillery. Since opening to the public in October 2012, the business has undergone a period of rapid growth, expanding its line of products as well as its tasting centre to meet the surge in demand. The certified organic distillery now produces around 29 different spirits, with its products winning awards throughout Australia and overseas, including a bronze medal at the highly competitive San Francisco World Spirits Awards in 2016. Cellar door manager Neil Langdon and his small team work to provide for a growing thirst for locally produced spirits that for years was not being catered for in the Hunter region.

SCHNAPP TO IT! Visit Hunter Distillery WORDS Michelle Meehan & Quentin von Essen It’s long held a reputation for having world-class wines and winemakers, and it’s fast earning a reputation for outstanding cuisine and awardwinning craft ales. But for the past seven years, the Hunter has also been home to a range of other top-rating tipples. More commonly associated with the freezing conditions of far-off Russia, a variety of flavoured vodkas, as well as a unique selection of liqueurs, schnapps, gin and other speciality spirits are being distilled right here in the Hunter Valley and wowing both customers and connoisseurs at home and abroad. These luscious spirits and liqueurs are being produced in the thick of the region’s wine country by the award-winning team at Hunter Distillery, located at 1686 Broke Road, Pokolbin. It’s a familiar sight on a Saturday in wine country – groups of people crowded around a long, gleaming bar eagerly awaiting a taste of the establishment’s prizewinning products.

Neil said that since opening six years ago, the cellar Close up of the Stills door’s original bar space had been more than doubled to at Hunter Distillery cope with the numbers of tourists, tour groups and locals who stop by for a tasting – and even that still isn’t big enough sometimes! “It started off with just the one bar to service people, and before long we had to include a couple of purpose-built bars to enable us to double the capacity over those busier periods’’,” he said. “There is a growing interest in spirits, and we’re growing with it. “Gin is the fastest growing spirit in the world, and is the most open to interpretation and experimentation, so there is a whole new world of flavours to be explored’’. Experimenting with different flavours is certainly an enjoyable pastime at Hunter Distillery. With their original line of products including a small range of premium Valli label vodkas such as traditional, lemon myrtle and vanilla, it didn’t take long for Hunter Distillery to spice up their line with a variety of flavours that include apple, caramel, chilli, chocolate, coffee and lime. The addition of liqueurs and schnapps to their range allowed the distillers to get even more creative, with While it may seem a tough everything from blackberry and butterscotch schnapps to choc mint, hazelnut, ginger, passionfruit and Turkish delight liqueurs, just to name a task to entice both locals and visitors away from the popular few. A Rich Tradition of Integrated Living & Award Winning Wines WORDS Michelle Meehan

Kelman Estate is a destination like no other. A boutique vineyard, five-star accommodation provider and unique residential community, Kelman Estate is the perfect place to visit for a day, linger for a weekend or stay for a lifetime. Established in 1996 by Stewart Ewen and named after William Kelman, one of the founding fathers of Australian wine and one of the earliest vignerons in the Hunter Valley, Kelman Estate consists of around 100 acres nestled in a quiet corner of Pokolbin near Mount View. At the heart of the estate is the flourishing vineyard, which was initially planted in the rich, fertile soil of the property in 1997 and now covers 23 acres, growing everything from Shiraz, Tempranillo and Semillon grapes to Chardonnay, Muscat and a Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend gleaned from Adelaide Hills fruit. After celebrating its first vintage in 1999, Kelman Estate’s premium range of wines quickly won favourable attention from wine show judges, with the triple medal-winning 2000 Semillon setting the standard for a long line of award-winning wines produced by Jeff Byrne, who is also the chief winemaker for Pokolbin’s Agnew Wines. Kelman’s Semillon is an unoaked, straw-coloured wine, with the aromas and flavours of apple lemon and citrus, while its Chardonnay

“Kelman also tends to ripen a little later in the vintage than other parts of the Hunter, allowing us to monitor for optimal picking times. “We are extremely proud of the quality of the vineyard and the excellent fruit that it now produces.

Our desire is to be known as a quality boutique Hunter vineyard that produces an excellent range of traditional Hunter varieties, as well as producing a few different styles depending on the vintage."

(which won a bronze medal at the 2016 Small Winemakers Show) features a straw-like to light yellow colour, with the fruit characters of citrus, melon and peach, complemented by hints of vanillin oak. The estate’s Shiraz, which exhibits the classic Hunter earthy palate, is a medium-bodied wine with spice, pepper, raspberry and plum characters, creating a complex flavour with a soft tannic finish. It, along with several of Kelman’s white varieties, are continuing the estate’s rich tradition of producing award-winning wines according to Kelman Estate’s Head of Wine Production Darryl Ede, having recently been awarded a swag of wine show medals. “Kelman has been awarded many medals over the years,” he said. “Recently our Sparkling Chardonnay, Semillon, Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz have successfully picked up medals, and additionally both of our 2016 Semillon and Shiraz wines will be receiving some excellent reviews in an upcoming edition of Wine Companion magazine.

Each vintage offers up its own unique opportunities for the winemakers at Kelman, with new varieties and different styles always on the horizon. The estate’s pale salmon pink Moscato, which tastes almost like liquid Turkish delight, is also renowned in the Hunter and beyond, with the 2015 vintage named the second best of its type in Australia. This year’s vintage, in particular, has plenty of potential according to Darryl, who said the vineyard is constantly trying to refine its practices in order to enhance the quality of its wines. “As we continue to refine our practices, we are looking to produce from the excellent 2018 vintage a single plot Shiraz using hand selected best parcels, a Tempranillo/Shiraz blend and an oak-matured Chardonnay/Semillon blend,” he said. “Additionally over the past few vintages we have produced a luscious Vin de Vie, which is a lightly fortified (brandy spirit) Muscat, produced in a beautiful bottle. “We also grafted some of our original vines over to Tempranillo in around 2011. The wines produced have been very easy drinking lighter drinks, but in 2017 we produced an extremely serious style. This is black and red fruited (black cherries, blackberries and raspberries) and has excellent soft grippy tannins and exceptional length on the palate. (continued next page ►)

23 | MAY 2018 hvb

(continued) “Additionally the traditional spice that one associates with this variety is evident, with the wine offering excellent cellaring potential.” What’s special about Kelman’s vineyard - and the wines it produces – is the way it has been integrated into the broader community that also calls the estate home. When the vineyard was initially designed in the mid to late nineties, it was not set out in the traditional manner, with row upon row of grapes. Instead, the vines were planted so as to meander between the estate’s privately-owned properties in a way that is no longer possible to replicate anywhere else in Australia. Changes in the Environmental Protection Act that relate to the required distance between human habitation and agricultural activity were made after the estate was developed, ensuring it will remain a unique concept. Darryl said the carefully designed layout of the estate and the integration of the residential community also had other advantages for the working vineyard. “We capture rainwater from all the individual properties, which is processed through our own Blivet system and is then directed into our lakes,” he said. “By capturing this water, we have the added ability to irrigate during times of high heat/drought, which is beneficial in the Hunter environment.” Aside from the picturesque aspect it creates for the residents, the integration of the vineyard into the residential community also has the effect of engendering a sense of pride and custodianship in many of those who live there. While residents own their land and their house, the vines and the fruit of the vines are owned by the community. And although residents are invited to simply enjoy living within the tranquil surrounds, many also choose to become more involved in the community and the operation of the vineyard.

The majority of the houses are set on around an acre of land each, while 13 two-bedroom cottages occupy quarter acre blocks. Owners are a mix of permanent residents and weekenders of all ages, from families with children through to retirees. Communal facilities include a library, tennis courts, bocce, croquet, golf hole, barbecues and a beautiful lake for a quiet bit of fishing, with the large wine shed doubling as a community social area for monthly gatherings, winter happy hours, special dinners, celebrations and parties.

2017 Hunter Valley Red Blend - RRP $30 A blend of 60% Cabernet, 30% Shiraz and 10% Tempranillo. TASTING Red juicy fruit, lifted blackberry and floral characters from the Cabernet and Tempranillo lead on the nose. Berry fruit and herbs from the Tempranillo support the rich, dark plum Shiraz fruit on the palate. Medium to full bodied with lip-smacking approachability and ease. FOOD MATCH A great match with slow roasted lamb shoulder or a block of chocolate. CELLARING Up to 5 years.

TINTILLA ESTATE

2016 Saphira Sangiovese - RRP $35 First class, hand-picked fruit, aged in French oak barrels for over 12 months before bottling. Aromas of dark cherries, blackberries and a touch of liquorice, cigar box and sweet leather. TASTING The taste of this wine is firm yet elegant, reflecting the aroma with dark cherries but with added plums and savoury cranberries - with a touch of spice and earthiness. Good structure and crisp acidity finish. FOOD MATCH Great with classic Italian meals like pasta and pizza but will just as easily go with a steak and veggies. CELLARING Drink now until 2025.

WYNWOOD ESTATE

Old Jack Muscat - RRP $40 An average of 8 year old, barrel aged Rutherglen Muscat. TASTING Rich and luscious with caramel, toffee and maple syrup characters. A full and flavoursome palate with an after taste that is soft lifted and lingering. An evening delight on its own or with desert. FOOD MATCH Perfect with a square of dark chocolate; soak dried fruits with a pudding or ice cream; or bite the corners off a Tim Tam and use it as a straw. CELLARING It doesn’t matter because you won’t be able to resist opening it!

ASCELLA ORGANIC WINES

2013 Merlot - RRP $28.90 Ascella Organic Wine is a family owned vineyard and the largest certified organic vineyard in the Hunter Valley. TASTING The 2013 (organic) Merlot is a wonderful wine with notes of red berry and ripe plums with delicate layers of dried spices. The oak maturation has delivered a soft and complex wine with layers of vanilla and primary flavours of cassis. The soft tannins and subtle oak give this wine a smooth rich finish. FOOD MATCH Roasts, salmon, game meat and hard cheeses CELLARING 15 to 20 years.

Introducing the Hunter Valley's

PETERSON HOUSE

2012 Reserve Sangiovese - RRP $33 Made from Sangiovese fruit from the Mudgee Wine Region, this traditionally bottled sparkling red greets you with a liquorice aroma, followed by blackcurrent and dark chocolate. TASTING Savoury oak and chocolate notes combine with some subtle fruit characters, finishing with a deep berry fruitiness. The acidity and oak combine to make this a refreshing and satisfying tipple. FOOD MATCH Great with antipasto but might also be interesting with a chocolate mousse or cream brulee.

KEVIN SOBELS

2013 Petit Verdot - RRP $25 Kevin Sobels Wines is a family owned business producing 100% Hunter Valley wines with a 170 year tradition of making wine in Australia. Petit Verdot – meaning ‘’little green one’’ in French, is a late ripening grape, which thrives in regions with long days and lots of sun and ideal for the warmer conditions of the Hunter Valley. TASTING This is a wonderfully deep coloured and bold wine, with a fullbodied structure and soft tannins in the middle palate. FOOD MATCH Grilled steak, spicy pork, veal, lamb and all types of game. CELLARING This wine will age beautifully. Cellar for up to 10 years or more.

SAVANNAH ESTATE

2017 Denman Chardonnay - RRP $35 This young wine has an alluring, ripe and complex mix of aromas - stewed stone fruit abound with wafts of vanilla and clove. It also hints nuances of sweet cashew nut like oak, with hints of freshly buttered toast. TASTING Rich, ripe, generous, clean and long. The upfront palate displays fruit flavours of fig, green melon and apricot. The mid palate is rounded and complex with floral flavours of cardamom and sage. The back palate is wonderfully soft and long with cleansing acidity and a slight cheesiness. FOOD MATCH Poached ocean trout, corn fed roast chicken, Hunter Belle Brie cheese. CELLARING 4-5 years.
