Kelman Vineyard has been producing high quality classic Hunter varietals since 1999. It has been awarded numerous medals in the past year and has been recognised by wine critic, James Halliday, for the winery and the individual wines. This zesty, crisp field blend is the result of a careful wine-making process. Both varieties were handpicked on 25 January 2018 and were pressed and matured together. They have a wonderful balance and fruity characteristics enhanced by 8 months in seasoned French oak. The perfect wine to accompany summer BBQs and dinner with friends. This is the first wine in 2019 to show our new Kelman label. Inspired by bud-burst the image reflects the winery philosophy of relying on the best grapes the vineyard and nature can produce.

BIGGER & BETTER
The Gum Ball 2019 The biggest Gum Ball in the event’s 15-year history returns on Anzac Day, Thursday, April 25 and runs until midday on Sunday, April 28. The four-day festival is a smorgasbord of activity, with organisers recently announcing an extensive program of activities for old and young punters alike. Heading the lineup is the towering titan of Aussie rock and his new outfit, Tex Perkins & The Fat Rubber Band. As the voice of the mighty Beasts of Bourbon, The Cruel Sea, Tex, Don and Charlie, Tex Perkins and the Dark Horses and the sell-out hit Johnny Cash tribute – The Man in Black, Tex has etched his name into the annals of Australian music history. Sampa the Great is one of the most important artists in the country. Small in stature but giant in voice, the Zambia-born Botswana-raised singer, rapper and poetic lyricist tackles big issues and ideas with her hybrid of hip hop, soul, traditional African and pop. Besides adding even more acts to the already robust bill, like Central Australian desert reggae outfit Tjupi Band, raw rock duo The Ruiins and the harp-inflected soundscapes of Newcastle’s Morgana Osaki, The Gum Ball has also announced a new element – The Tractor Shed. The Tractor Shed is an intimate space that will host live Q&As with Gum Ball headline artists like Magic Dirt, Mojo Juju, and Tamam Shud. There’s also be a screening of Waiting, an Australian documentary about cult American musician Van Duren, who will also be performing at Gum Ball and doing a live Q&A about the film. Added to that will be two comedy showcases curated by Newcastle’s Big Dog Comedy and a talk from author Stuart Coupe about his hit book Roadies. The line-up for the popular Sunday Wind Down so far features internationally acclaimed songwriter Ben Salter, and Hunter Valley favourites Demi Mitchell, Dave Wells and Andy Abra & Big River. The Gum Ball will again be a child-friendly experience. The little ones will love clowning around in the Circus Playground, gawking at the reptile show, mask-making and theatre games with Curious Legends and puppet-making with The Squeaking Tribe. The House of Big Dreams crèche service also returns, so parents can drop the little ones off and enjoy the incredible live music. Not to mention free morning yoga classes for the energetic. This year’s Gum Ball food line-up features flavours from around the world, with beloved Newcastle tastemakers Bao Brothers joined by East Coast Paella Co., Rustic Pizza, Cyprus Kitchen, Natural Pancake Co and vego/vegan delights from Funky Food Van. Meet the Maker
UP UP & AWAY
For Local Maker WORDS Michelle Meehan
Karen Rowe can’t remember a time when she wasn’t being creative. From winning art awards in primary school to trying her hand at almost every craft she came across, putting her creativity into practice has been a lifelong passion. It’s little wonder then that the founder of the popular Handmade in the Hunter Market isn’t satisfied with simply organising the artisan event, which is held several times a month – she runs three of her own stalls as well, selling everything from handcrafted novelty items to hot air balloon mobiles.
“
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t creating... and then in year 8, I learned to sew, and it opened up a whole new world.
“Over the years, there isn’t much I haven’t tried – macramé, knitting, leadlight, calligraphy, jewellery-making, cooking, woodwork, Celtic illumination, folk art, cross-stitch, tapestry, embroidery, mosaics, tie-dying, decoupage, card-making – the list goes on and on. “However, I seem to always come back to sewing in some form.” Karen’s sewing skills are certainly evident in the products she lovingly handcrafts for her Up, Up & Away Balloon Mobiles stall. Featuring everything from one-balloon designs to her most challenging project, seven balloons arranged in an ascending spiral, her whimsical mobiles are a hit with customers of all ages.
“Many people falsely assume that mobiles are for babies only,” the Lorn woman said. “In fact, they can be used as a valuable educational tool to assist in numerous developmental stages, spark the imagination as well as promoting emotional well-being in children up to the age of 12. “Using the fabric design and the addition of a toy creates the childlike whimsy that appeals to ‘kids’ of all ages. It’s this bit of fun that has a middle-aged man buying a Spiderman mobile for himself or the white-haired grandma taking home a Mickey Mouse one because it made her giggle every time she looked at it.” Appropriately, Karen will launch her new line of night-light balloon mobiles at the Night Glow event at Roche Estate on April 13. You can also check out Up, Up & Away Balloon Mobiles at this month’s Handmade in the Hunter Markets, which will be held at Kevin Sobels Wines on April 6, 13, 20, 21 and 27. A Property
STEEPED IN HISTORY WORDS Michelle Meehan
Karin Adcock isn’t one to do things by halves. So when the Sydney-based businesswoman and her partner John Winstanley purchased the former Pooles Rock estate in 2016, it didn’t take long before their dreams of owning a country weekender where they could gather with family and friends turned into a mission to reinvigorate the Broke vineyard as a wine and tourism destination. The project was a perfect fit for the Sydney couple, whose combined backgrounds as executives and entrepreneurs were complemented by their varied experience in managing large properties and the wine industry. Karin is best known for bringing Pandora jewellery from her native Denmark to Australia, transforming a business she started in her Northern Beaches garage into the world’s most successful Pandora entity. Prior to that, she spent a decade as a project manager, revitalising scores of large properties in Denmark and offshore, ranging from educational facilities to what was at the time the world’s largest mango farm. John’s interest in the wine industry began during his early 20's when he invested in his first vineyard in South Africa. He moved to Australia in 1995 to become CEO of Rugby NSW, where he worked with prominent wine figures, including the late David Clarke, the Macquarie Bank founder and original owner of Pooles Rock. John then spent three years as the CEO of The Wine Society (from 2005 to 2008), expanding his commercial understanding of the Australian wine landscape and fuelling his passion for the industry.
While the couple never intended to buy a vineyard, Karin said it only took one look at the 113-acre property at Broke before they were sold. “When we came up to have a look at it, we literally came in through the gate, and we were both absolutely blown away and decided that we really would like to buy this property,” she said. “We came up with a good offer and also asked for a very fast settlement… suddenly within a week, well actually within an hour of really not intending to buy a vineyard, we were owners of a vineyard. That was quite exciting.
“
In my past when I was in Denmark I worked with some very large properties, and I’ve also worked on some large farm properties, so when I came into this place I just thought ‘Oh my god this is just such a stunning property and there’s so much opportunity, we’ve got to do this.
“We had talked a bit about how it would be nice to have a place where we could bring all our daughters and have some time out, and be in the country. So that’s where it started, and then it really has become a little bit bigger than Ben Hur I think with one thing leading to the other. One of my challenges is I’m not good at doing things by halves… when we get an idea, we’ve got to do it properly.” Doing it properly meant restoring and replanting the property’s 28 acres of once fertile vines, some of which had withered and died in the five years before Karin and John took over. This included replacing about 10 acres of ailing Verdelho with a new Chardonnay clone from Burgundy. (Continued next page) ►

(Continued) This was done under the advice of celebrated viticulturalist Liz Riley, and vineyard manager Dave Grosser, who literally grew up amongst the vines at Pooles Rock as his parents both worked on the estate for many years. After years of careful nurturing and several harvests of increasing yield, Karin said they had finally got to the stage where they were ready to produce their first batch of Chardonnay under the estate’s new brand, Winmark Wines. The Pooles Rock label was not sold to Karin and John as part of the property purchase, however, the new brand offers a thoroughly suitable alternative, combining John’s surname, Winstanley, with Karin’s maiden name, Enemark, while also translating to “field of wines” in Karin’s native Danish. Owners Karin Adcock and Visitors to this year’s A Little Bit of Italy in Broke, a John Winstanley two-day event involving 12 of the Broke Fordwich wine region’s vineyards and producers, will be among the first to taste the inaugural Winmark Chardonnay. Mio Monte will play host to Winmark’s A Little Bit of Italy in Broke Karin said the event, which will be held on April 13-14, will also give offerings, which will include tastings of their wine, delicious antipasto them a chance to showcase the latest addition to their accommodation platters prepared by Italian chef Bruno Giagu from Wollombi’s Panino offering, Mio Monte, which was originally part of the Pooles Rock Café & Restaurant, as well as traditional Italian sweet treats, barista estate before being sold off in 2004. coffee and gelato. Other landmarks have been carefully added around the property by Karin and John, who wanted to create a multi-layered experience for visitors to enjoy. These include the fire pit entertaining area that makes the most of a natural vantage point next to the dam ideal for watching the sun go down, and 'Karin’s Koppie', a formal stand of 40 deciduous trees overlooked by the ancient Yellow Rock escarpment. The couple also commissioned one of Australia’s most outstanding landscape architects, Paul Bangay OAM, to create and link the gorgeous perennial and rose garden with the gazebo, 12.5m pool and tennis court. Then they engaged relatively unknown sculptor David Ball, just before he won the 2017 Bondi Sculpture by the Sea major prize, to build 'Biosis', a massive steel structure that is perched above the vines. “It makes me really happy to be surrounded by something beautiful and when you then are a part of creating that yourself, there’s real satisfaction in seeing how it's all growing and coming together and how you can form it and change it, and then just continuously enjoy it,” Karin said. “We could also just have left it all as it was, but you know, the enjoyment is just nowhere near the same, and I really love that sense of wow, we have created this, and it's so beautiful, and it's here to be enjoyed and shared with friends and guests.” Another major landmark in the works is Windmark’s new cellar door, which is being designed by Karin’s sister, award-winning international architect Fong Chan Zeuthen. The council is currently assessing plans for the building, and once approved Karin hopes construction will be completed later this year. The new building will be located on the site of the original Pooles Rock cellar door, surrounded by five towering gum trees, and has been designed with an earthy, stylish, yet unpretentious character that honours the history of the property and the beauty of the landscape.
“We love art, and I think this place really lends itself to present beautiful art. So we wanted the cellar door to be almost like a sculpture in its own right, sitting in the landscape. “That’s why we have created it so it sits in among the gum trees, and then we’re incorporating the gum trees by putting a big deck around it. In that way, it will almost become a landmark in its own right, just as we have Pooles Rock as being a stunning landmark, and Biosis our sculpture and the perennial garden. “We are trying to create different, unique spaces on the property where, when you go there, you sort of feel that you really connect with the beauty around you, and the nature, and you therefore also connect better with the people you’re with, and you also somewhat connect better with yourself because you have that peace around you. “I think it is important that when you meet people or facilitate that they can be somewhere, which we are responsible for, that they’ve got to have a really outstanding experience. “They’ve got to feel, ‘Wow this was really a special weekend, I would love to come back’ because we made them feel connected to the place. So that's what we are trying to achieve in lots of little ways and also through the three houses we have here for accommodation.” Aside from Mio Monte, that accommodation includes Winmark Private Residence, a luxury two-storey home, styled and appointed for an indulgent weekend getaway or executive rental, as well as the more intimate Rock Cottage, a cosy four-bedroom bungalow nestled next to the vegetable garden behind Pooles Rock, with both offering panoramic views of the vineyards and mountain ranges. With a vast collection of artefacts, antiques and artwork sourced from around the world, Karin has lavished her passion for interiors into renovating and revamping the accommodation to create the ultimate indulgent getaway destination. Karin said she has loved every minute she has spent working on the various aspects of the property and can’t wait to see what else the future brings. “I love every day I'm here,” she said. “There’s so many exciting things, and so many opportunities to get ideas of what we could do in the future… for me it's actually the journey which is exciting, not the end game, and there really is so much scope to what we can do.” ■

HOPS to it
This Easter! WORDS Quentin von Essen
The Australian beer scene is fast becoming one of the most exciting in the world, with more and more beer lovers turning toward fullflavoured beers, especially India Pale Ales, seasonal beers and Belgians. With over 600 microbreweries (including brew pubs and contract breweries) dotting the landscape from coast to coast and with more opening every month, our growing craft beer market is due to passionate craft beer makers and sophisticated beer drinkers who are demanding a more unique, and premium product. While the term "microbrewery" was originally used to describe the size of the brewery, it has evolved to reflect an alternative attitude and approach to brewing beer and now also describes those breweries that incorporate flexibility, adaptability, experimentation and customer service to the overall beer experience. The Hunter Beer Co. in Nulkaba is the Hunter Valleys first microbrewery and is famous not just for brewing beer, but also its unique range of innovative, handcrafted beers that come with a diverse range of flavours and styles. The brewery has been in operation since 2003 and brews approximately 600 litres at a time with 95% of the beer consumed onsite. The small brewing team headed up by Keith Grice “The Beer Guy”, believe that beer should be a journey – “an adventure” – bold in flavour and character. When you get Keith talking about beer, you get the impression that he is on a life-long pursuit towards a beer-fuelled Nirvana. As a result, the guys at the Hunter Beer Co. have a great deal of fun experimenting and brewing many different types of beer and being creative with a variety of different ingredients. Their range of award-winning regular beers, such as the bold American style Pale Ale, the dark German styled Bock, the full-strength Lager, the light flavoured Belgian Witbier and the flagship beer the Hunter Kolsch, all have unique tastes and big personalities. They also produce a wonderful easy drinking Ginger Beer. In addition to the regular beers, the brewing team also produce a range of popular seasonal beers – which depending on the time of year could be anything from the Oyster Stout, the Apricot IPA, Christmas Pudding Beer, Slaked Magpie or Cranky Pants IPA. The increasing popularity of these handcrafted beers brewed by the Hunter Beer Co. confirms that people are becoming educated about beer and the different flavours available to them. Visit the Hunter Beer Company's spacious “beer bar” to see first-hand just how microbreweries function, talk to Keith or the brewing team and taste the wide range of beers on tap.

FOR THE FOODIES
Deliciously Fresh EVERY DAY AT OISHII DINING REVIEW BY Di von Essen
Oishii Restaurant is one of few restaurants that are open seven days a week, so we decided to take up the opportunity to have dinner at this popular restaurant in the middle of the week and were surprised to see just how busy this charming family owned and operated restaurant was. Dining at Oishii is like few other restaurant experiences, and it is easy to see why Oishii has become a highly recommended and favourite dining destination amongst locals and visitors. Located within the Roche Estate complex on Broke Rd in Pokolbin and overlooking the architecturally designed amphitheatre and vines, Oishii provides a conveniently located, relaxed and affordable dining alternative with dishes designed to please every palate. The menu at Oishii is a combination of two Asian cultures - Thai and Japanese and includes all the traditional Thai favourites such as Thai fish cakes, stir-fried vegetables, chicken cashew nuts, green curry chicken and other fragrant Thai curries. The menu is further enhanced with a range of Japanese dishes that include assorted sushi and sashimi selections, teppanyaki and teriyaki.
There are also a variety of vegetarian dishes. We decided on the chicken satay, and assorted sushi and nori rolls for the entree as well as the miso soup which proved to be a perfect accompaniment to the Japanese dishes. We then made a selection of three Thai dishes all served with steamed rice for main courses. Our first selection was the yellow lamb curry from the specials board. This dish was superbly presented, and the lamb was deliciously tender with just a hint of ginger and crushed garlic. The sweet and sour chicken - looking colourful and healthy, was served with cucumber, tomatoes and shiitake mushrooms and with a tangy and extremely delicious sweet and sour sauce. Our last dish was our favourite and a very traditional Thai meal - the Panang duck curry and as I later discovered a very popular dish amongst Oishii's patrons. It came served with juicy and generous slices of skinless duck sitting within a deep-flavoured Panang curry sauce, and after the first taste it was easy to see why this dish was such a favourite – it was delicious and left us wanting more. The dishes are perfect for sharing and ideal for families or groups of friends. The setting is minimalist and with a Thai-themed dining room. Diners also have the option of dining outside on the terrace overlooking the vines - a perfect setting for those warmer days and evenings. Oishii offers a real alternative for dining in the Hunter Valley and is a “must dining experience.” For more information and menus visit www.oishii.com.au

MICHAEL ROBOTHAM
The Master of Suspense WORDS Michelle Meehan
Fans of Michael Robotham’s award-winning crime novels know that the real thrill of the story comes from the suspense. But while they expect plenty of intrigue between the pages of his books, they never suspected the internationally best-selling author would leave them hanging in real life as well.

Twelve months ago Hunter readers were eagerly looking forward to a visit from their favourite crime writer but had to put their anticipation on ice when Robotham was taken off the bill for the 2018 Newcastle Writers Festival at the last minute. Like all good plot twists, the reasons for the change were not clearly explained at the time, only coming out more than a month later when it was revealed the author was recovering from a life-saving quadruple heart bypass. “The Newcastle Writers Festival … (was the) first festival appearance I've ever cancelled in my entire career,” Robotham said. “When I've committed to going to things I've always made it, and I remember when I sent (organiser) Rosemary (Milsom) a message saying I can't make it, and I told her ‘Between you and me, I’m going in for heart bypass surgery’ she, of course, said ‘Oh my God that's far more important, forget about the festival, you just get healthy’. “But I kept saying, ‘No, no, I promise I'll come back next year, I promise’.” Thankfully for his local fans, Robotham is making good on that promise this month, joining around 130 authors, journalists, poets and artists on the line-up for the 2019 Newcastle Writers Festival. The festival runs from April 5-7 with a packed program of more than 90 free and ticketed events across various locations. Robotham will make two appearances during the event, discussing the complex characters and plot twists that bring his books to life from 10am-11am on April 6 at The Playhouse in Newcastle, before heading out to the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre that night for a special Secrets and Lies session from 7.30pm-8.30pm, hosted by Maitland’s own renowned crime writer Barry Maitland. BREA & LULU
A GLITTERING TROVE OF TREASURES WORDS Michelle Meehan
It’s been two years since Brenda Phillips-Donohoe expanded her diamond and fine jewellery business from its base on Norfolk Island to a shopfront in Pokolbin. But while relocating over 1600 kilometres to set up a second store sounds like more than enough upheaval for most people, the savvy Cessnock businesswoman is never one to rest on her laurels. Around 12 months ago the Exclusive Diamond Company owner decided the time had come for her business to be on the move again – although at least this time she only had to travel around 15 metres. After growing a strong client base and cementing her reputation in the Australian market, Brenda felt the time was right to move from the simple yet elegant surrounds of Shop 2a at the Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village, into the far larger premises of Shop 6. Whilst the new store still offers the same glittering treasure trove of diamonds, gems and designer jewellery that Exclusive Diamond Co. have become well known for, it now incorporates a much wider product line, which all come together under the new business name of Brea and Lulu Signature Collections. Brenda said the expansion represented a new direction for her business – in more ways than one. “I’ve had several businesses, as well as a few online platforms, but I never personalise the name of any of them,” she said. “This expansion meant that I had to choose a name that not only worked individually but alongside Exclusive Diamond Co. “It not only had to be fresh but a little sassy. ‘Brea & Lulu’ are both derived from my birth names, and ‘Signature Collections’ encompasses diamonds, décor and apparel, all of which have been designed or sourced by me!
“We moved to a space three times larger (than my original store), not only to diversify and broaden our brand but to elevate engagement across more platforms. “The space itself has a wonderful feel and presence to it, is bright and has the most wonderful outlook directly onto green space and the fabulous rotunda.” While Exclusive Diamond Co.’s stock lines were always exquisite, the new products add a chic, elegant touch to the store, with a range that now also includes clothing, giftwares and homewares. “Brea & Lulu Signature Collections follows in the footsteps of the Hampton and French chic feel,” Brenda said. “We stock stunning Paloma pillows; French Cote Noire scented blooms, candles diffusers and natural soaps, and fabulous elegant wall art. We have clothing from the Hammock and Vine Range, prominently found in Myers, and beautiful handbags, scarves and fashion jewellery. “We also interweave our shelves with some adorable take-home gifts, wine charms, fun tea towels and porcelain ‘life message’ hearts.” Of course, customers looking for a unique and finely crafted piece of jewellery, or sparkling diamond of distinction won’t be disappointed either.
“
Brea & Lulu Signature Collections are prestige stockists of the full Exclusive Diamond Co. range including Argyle Blush and Kimberly Pink Diamonds, as well as certified loose diamonds of all shapes, colours and sizes, with an extensive range of sought-after black diamonds and the incredibly rare tanzanite also available.
A wide range of white, yellow and rose gold jewellery is also in stock, from Brenda’s own contemporary, vintage and bespoke designs to others sourced from Canada, America and Europe. With such a stunning range of natural diamonds, precious and semiprecious gemstones set in private label and bespoke jewellery designs that you won’t find elsewhere, it’s little wonder Exclusive Diamond Co. were finalists in the Brides Choice awards for Newcastle and the Hunter Jewellery and Design. The business was also the recent recipient of a Chamber of Commerce Service of Excellence Award for customer service. With such a successful start and a bright future ahead, Brea & Lulu Signature Collections is the crowning jewel in Brenda’s rewarding and extremely diverse career. A career which has seen her begin her working life as a banker, travel to London to become a currency trader and end up on Norfolk Island running her own café and catering for airline companies before buying the Diamonds Exclusive shop from a South African diamond cutter. Brenda completed training through the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world-renowned authority in the diamond industry, and began creating her own range of jewellery designs for the store. The mother-of-four ran the Norfolk Island store for 12 years before deciding to expand its presence into the Hunter in 2017. You can find Brea & Lulu Signature Collections at Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village – 2090 Broke Road, Pokolbin. For more information visit www.ExclusiveDiamondCo.com.au

Celebrating EASTER IN THE HUNTER WORDS Michelle Meehan
Easter is almost upon us again, and with the celebration falling in the middle of the school holidays this year it’s a great time for getting out and exploring all the region has to offer. There will be plenty to do across Hunter Valley Wine Country throughout the Easter long weekend, with some egg-cellent activities for the kids and a few tasty treats for mums and dads as well. April is a beautiful time of year to visit the Hunter Valley Gardens, with clear sunny weather anticipated and an array of entertainment on offer for the whole family to enjoy. Visitors can join in the fun of the region’s largest Easter egg hunt on April 20 and 21, with an extra prize of an annual family pass to the Gardens for whoever finds the precious Golden Egg. Kids should also be on the lookout for the Easter Bunny who will be hopping by for a special visit, while the Easter Bonnet parade and delicious gingerbread workshop are sure to keep the fun going all weekend. A few more unusual eggs will also be on show at the Gardens this Easter thanks to the Mega Creatures display, which is running throughout the school holiday period. Spot a Stegosaurus, tiptoe past the Triceratops and try not to tremble at the sight of the giant T-Rex, or check out the new additions to this popular prehistoric event including dinosaur skeletons, archaeological fossil digs and the fabulous Dino Mights stage show.
yhv 28 | APRIL 2019
If that’s not enough thrills and excitement for one visit, why not take a ride on the Gardens’ amazing Venetian carousel, 25m Ferris wheel, super speedy swing chair or giant slide, or bounce off that chocolate-induced sugar rush in the kids’ inflatable zones. If you’re looking to add a few more eggs to your basket before you leave Hunter Valley Gardens, make sure you stop by Shop 5 in the village and check out the gourmet delights on offer at the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company. The destination of choice for those looking to indulge in something truly special, the artisan chocolate makers have been lovingly crafting their wares since 1999 using only the highest quality Belgian or Swiss couverture chocolate, together with Australian dried fruits and nuts, and distilled pure fruit oil infusions. There’s something to cater to every taste bud, with dark, milk and white buttons and blocks a staple of the range. Easter is undoubtedly their busiest time of year, and during this period Hunter Valley Chocolate Company branches out to include a few sensational seasonal lines including the ever popular freckled eggs, and a more novel product, which uses a real rainbow-dyed eggshell that kids can peel off to discover a delicious praline nougat underneath. Hunter Valley Chocolate Company’s amazing array of handcrafted products are available seven days a week online as well as in-store at their “Twenty-3-Twenty” Chocolate & Fudge Factory on Broke Road and their retail outlets at Hunter Valley Gardens and Peterson’s House. Parents keen to pick up a treat for themselves that isn’t chocolate related should check out The Garden Cellars, with an Easter Long Weekend sale not to be missed. There will be tastings available and wine dozens on offer from $144, including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Merlot and more, while stocks last. Once you’ve had your fill of the fun at the Gardens, don’t forget to stop by Kevin Sobels Wines just down the road and check out the handcrafted treasures on offer at the Handmade in the Hunter Markets. To celebrate Easter the markets will run all weekend, from 9am-3pm on Saturday and 9am-2pm on Easter Sunday.
Easter for adults at Peterson House
Organiser Karen Rowe promises plenty of zany Easter fun, with bunny ears galore, a sprinkling of chocolate and “whatever else we can dream up to make your visit to the market a festive time”. Alongside the Easter craziness will be a market full of passionate stallholders who love to chat about what they do and show you their work. Some stalls will also be running hands-on craft classes so you can make something to take home (fees applicable). If you feel like something a bit more substantial than a chocolate egg or two, why not grab a bite to eat at one of the region’s fine dining restaurants or gourmet cafés. Blaxland Inn will offer two or three-course menus for lunch and dinner for all reservations throughout the Easter weekend, with a complimentary bread to start followed by your selection of entrée and main or even one of our delicious house-made desserts. A kid’s menu is also available for children aged 12 and under. For those staying locally,
Blaxland Inn also offers a courtesy vehicle suitable for up to 11 guests, which is available for pick up and drop off within the local area during their dinner service. Easter is traditionally a time for seafood, with Restaurant Cuvee at Peterson House the perfect place to tempt the tastebuds. Choose from old school prawn cocktail, parmesan popcorn oysters with barbecue mayonnaise, tom yum squid on a snow pea salad, and pan seared scallops on a cauliflower puree and crispy prosciutto, matched with a glass of 2012 Sparkling Semillon. The specials are available until sold out so don’t delay in making a reservation. For something a little more casual, why not pack a picnic (and your child’s favourite plush toy) and head out to Hunter Valley Horse Riding and Adventures for their third annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic. Being held at the spectacular Lovedale property on Saturday, April 20, the day will kick off at 10am with an amazing display of trick riding. Tony’s magic show at 11am will be sure to amaze, while an Easter egg hunt, face painting, jumping castle and games will keep the kids entertained, with pony rides also available all day (entry fees apply). THE RISE
of Organic and Biodynamic Wine WORDS Quentin von Essen
Ten years ago, organic and biodynamic winemaking might have seemed left field or even faddish, but jump forward to 2019 and the interest surrounding wines produced biodynamically or organically is heading toward unprecedented heights as consumers increasingly turn to wines that reflect their raising consciousnesses – drinking more sustainable, organic, and biodynamic wines from winemakers who have embraced these values in their winemaking philosophies.
Dramatic changes to our planet have changed the way we think about those components we typically take for granted - the water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe and the way we treat the land that makes this all possible. Consumer demand for high quality, sustainable, organic, fair trade and eco-friendly food products has never been higher, and it’s no surprise that this demand has overflowed into the world of wine. To some, the words "sustainability" and "organic" may come across as soft and fuzzy buzzwords – and are often misused, but grape growers are grabbing onto it, with many winemakers and viticulturists making a move towards more sustainable farming methods and gaining a better understanding of biodynamic and organic farming and winemaking. While it may have started as a cottage industry in the 1970s, organic winemaking in Australia has gained significant popularity to
yhv 30 | APRIL 2019
the point where there is now a rising number of organic farmers in the Australian wine industry. At the same time, a growing proportion of skilled and businesssavvy wine-makers have embraced innovative production processes and cutting-edge technology to produce critically acclaimed, awardwinning and commercially successful organic wines. The label "organic" is used for grapes grown in accordance with principles of organic farming, and like organic foods, is produced without the use of artificial chemical fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. It is said that there are more than 2,000 organic wine producers globally, with Europe accounting for around 70% of global organic wine production. Bio-dynamic farming often referred to as "an advanced method of organic farming", includes many of the credos of organic farming (i.e., no chemical intervention) but goes further by introducing the principles established in 1924 by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Steiner advocated a system that emphasises manure and compost – and an astrological approach to planting and harvesting based on the phases of the moon and the stars. It also adds to them certain specific preparations for optimal soil management and harvest. There are processes and timelines for enriching the soil, planting, pruning, and harvesting fruit, based on the phases of the moon as well as astrological signs. Practically speaking, biodynamic wine is made from grapes grown on land where the environment as a whole (not just the vines) plays a role in the process. For instance, other crops and even animals are used in the farming mix to make the land healthier, sustainable and more fertile. In other words, rather than focus on the health of individual plants, Steiner’s system teaches that good health requires that the entire ecosystem in which the plant is growing be thriving. This includes the other plants, the soil, the animals and even the humans who are working the land.
Mark (L) and Aaron from Tamburlaine
So, is all this nonsense? Not so, according to the ever-increasing number of wine producers in Australia and internationally who have embraced biodynamics. Choosing an environmentally sustainable approach to viticulture is obviously to be applauded in these times of climate change. However, talk to organic and biodynamic producers, and you’ll find that for some producers, being organic is a fundamental philosophy of their business and a necessity for the environment and longevity of their land. Quality too is a key reason with many producers believing that land free of chemicals improves the quality and taste of their wine. There is also a growing sense that the demand for organic wine is increasing and will continue to grow in the years to come. This is supported by claims that organic wine consumption has almost doubled in the past five years. To become a certified biodynamic producer, a farm needs first to be certified organic, and then if biodynamic principles are included in the farming program, the term biodynamic can apply. It's hard to get an accurate number of just how many wine producers are employing biodynamic principles. It’s a method of cultivation that is rapidly catching on among wine producers and is, therefore, a very rapidly changing picture. In addition, besides those already certified as biodynamic, there are also those who are experimenting with part of their production. Here in the Hunter Valley Tamburlaine Organic Wines, Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard and Ascella Organic Wines tell an alternative Hunter wine story as some of the most recognised organic and biodynamic wine producers in the region. As a group, they have a deep commitment to the environment, and together they share a passion for making wines that capture the unique flavours of the Hunter Valley and are reflective of the local terroir. As Australia’s largest producer of organic wines, Tamburlaine Organic Wines has never lost its enthusiasm, nor its preparedness to tread the path less travelled. But, by far the biggest departure Tamburlaine has taken from the norm is its progressive and rigorous testing on what it now describes as "contemporary" organics. Since the integration of biodynamic methods into the organic management of their vineyards in the 1990's, Mark and Lou Davidson of Tamburlaine Organic Wines have seen a noticeable difference in the health of their vineyards and quality of the fruit. Mark Davidson, Managing Director, says that holistic vineyard management has worked in even the most testing of Hunter vintages. "And heaven knows there have been plenty of those in the last 15 years," he adds. Mark sees organics as "the embodiment of terroir in its sustainability and connection to the soil". In the winery, new technologies have been embraced along with certified organic wine production. Mark says the combination is brilliant for the wine. Tamburlaine is consistent in its principles. It has addressed the inherent waste issues in wineries, particularly in electricity use, and achieved carbon neutrality. Today, the 53-year-old winery has an enviable reputation in the Australian market with one of the largest wine clubs in Australia and is recognised as being one of the largest certified organic wineries in the Southern Hemisphere – based on 100 per cent organic and biodynamic farming and turning out more than 80,000 cases a year. Ascella Organic Wines is possibly Australia’s largest family-run organic vineyard where owners Barb and Geoff Brown have been using sustainable organic farming practices since 2005, and their conviction in its effectiveness is unwavering. Together, they have built a strong reputation for producing high quality, value for money wines from their estate vineyards located on Thompsons Rd in the Broke-Fordwich region of the Hunter Valley Geoff who is responsible for all things organic in the vineyard said that there was strong growth in the organic sector with the demand for organic wine increasing both locally and overseas and that further growth was expected in the coming years.
Geoff and Barb Brown of Ascella
"Great wines start in the vineyard – and organics is a system that allows us to grow the best and most flavoursome fruit, which is a key ingredient to creating premium-quality wine", said Geoff. "As a result, a growing number of wine lovers are seeking out organically certified options."
“
Organic wine is viewed as a quality product and is fast becoming an essential choice in some of the better restaurants and retailers.
Geoff sees organic farming as "going back to how farming was done almost 100 years ago before the introduction of modern chemicals. A return to a simpler form of farming and working with natural products". However, if organic farming was that easy everybody would be doing it. "Organics is harder to practice in the vineyard with the biggest challenge being weed control for which there is never an easy solution, and of course it is more labour intensive." Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard is one of two certified biodynamic wineries in the Hunter Valley. (Continued next page) ►

(Continued) The owner, Rod Windrim and his late wife Suzanne, first came to the Hunter Valley in 1977, planting their first vineyard in Pokolbin before moving on to establish Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard in Broke in 1998. After a few trials, they made the shift to organic and biodynamic farming practices and by 2007, had become fully accredited as organic and biodynamic producers. Rod believes that growing their grapes biodynamically makes for more authentic wines with an inherent sense of place. "Biodynamics allows us to create wines with a clean taste and with greater fruit intensity," said Rod. "The interest in biodynamics is growing nationally and locally, and we would love to see more biodynamic vineyards in the Hunter Valley."
“
As biodynamic farmers, we are in search of quality, not quantity of wine, with any intervention in the winemaking process kept to a minimum to allow for the best expression of our place – our terroir.
Biodynamics promotes biodiversity in the vineyard, establishing an ecosystem in which many species of plants and animals can co-exist side by side. The 20-hectare vineyard occupies less than a third of the whole property, and as you take a tour around the estate, you can see how the whole farm is one living organism, with each element working together to find the balance that’s required to work without the interference of chemicals. They’ve got sheep, geese, chickens, ducks, peacocks, Wessex Saddleback pigs and cattle that graze amongst the vines to weed and

fertilise the soil. There are fish in the dam, bees, a veggie garden, an orchard and an olive grove - and they are all just a wonderful part of the cycle. The obvious question, of course, is what are better – organic or non-organic wines? Well, as with just about everything, the proof is in the tasting, so next time you’re looking for a new wine to try, why not put organic and biodynamic wines to the test and see if you can taste the difference. Here’s a selection of wines to help you jump into this exciting and growing group of wines...

Step Back in Time MURALS COMMEMORATE TOWNS UNIQUE HISTORY WORDS Michelle Meehan
There are many ways to learn more about the heritage of a region, from thumbing through the pages of a reference book to listening to a talk from a local history group. But when it comes to the coalfields town of Kurri Kurri, a trip down memory lane is a far more visual experience. The town and surrounding villages are home to more than 60 brightly-coloured murals, which adorn once vacant walls on everything from local pubs and main street shops to the grandstand at Kurri Kurri Sportsground. The murals commemorate various aspects of the region’s history, from Kurri Kurri’s coal mining past to its sporting community, pioneering population, cultural pastimes and industrial heritage, with every painting also including the symbol of Kurri Kurri – a kookaburra. The urban art initiative was created by the Towns With Heart committee, a community group formed to develop projects that attracted more visitors to the town, diversify employment opportunities and create and support events that promote the area. The mural project began in 2003, and 16 years later it is considered one of the area’s key tourist attractions. Travellers from across the state and much further afield regularly stop off to view what is recognised as the largest collection of outdoor art on mainland Australia, with Kurri Kurri now one of the best-known mural towns in the world, A handy mural map, available at the Kurri Kurri Visitor Centre, allows tourists to undertake a self-guided tour of the artworks, which are predominantly grouped around the town centre, while groups can also book in to undertake a one-and-a-half hour guided tour.
One of the most striking murals on the tour is painted on the side of The Station Hotel as you first come into Kurri Kurri, recreating a famous photograph taken by Newcastle Herald snapper Darren Pateman. The photograph was captured during coverage of the bushfires around Abernethy and Kearsley in October 2002 and shows a group of cricketers playing on while a fire rages in the background. The image was painted on the side of the Kurri Kurri pub as it was the sponsor of one of the teams immortalised in the photograph. A number of murals delve into the region’s coal mining heritage, including the notorious Rothbury Riot, while others depict everything from wartime heroes and colonial workers to famous local figures including Beating Around the Bush presenter Ian “Beat” Hill. The latest addition to the collection is hard to miss for anyone taking the Loxford exit of the Hunter Expressway, with a towering threepanel mural on the side of Hart Road painted by Caves Beach artist Daniel Joyce. The mural, number 61 on the list, celebrates the major role the now-closed aluminium smelter played in the economic development of Kurri Kurri for more than four decades. The smelter, known throughout the years as Hydro, Alcan, Capral and VAW, operated from 1969 to 2012 and employed more than 500 people at its peak. Images depicting day-to-day life at the smelter, as well as its instantly distinguishable skyline, were included in the symbolic artwork. A new mural has also been proposed in the grounds of the Kurri Kurri Hospital on the wall of the upgraded surgical theatre, with the artwork to be based on a number of historical photographs including an iconic image of the hospital’s horse and cart ambulance, which was taken in 1913. Other murals in the planning stage include a Women of World War I artwork, as well as a new town entry mural at Neath. For more information about the Kurri Kurri murals or to download the walking mural map, visit www.visitkurrikurri.com/events-attractions/kurri-kurri-murals
