FROM THE EDITORS Who doesn’t love a good festival? According to the ever-knowledgeable Wikipedia, a festival is “an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and centring on some characteristic aspect of that community and its traditions. It goes on to say food is such a vital resource that many festivals are associated with harvest time.” Wikipedia really must have had the Hunter Valley in mind when they penned this definition, as May is well and truly the month of the Festival in both the Upper and Lower Hunter Valley regions – and yes – much of the celebrating is centred around wine and food! The Hunter Valley Wine & Food Festival involves two months’ worth of partying and numerous special events, dinners and tastings. Then there’s the Lovedale Long Lunch, Tocal Field Days, Heroes of the Hunter, Festival of Fleeces, the Winery Running Festival – just to name a few! I’m exhausted already! This month we say farewell to Matt Dillow from the Verandah Restaurant and welcome new owners Amanda and Tim Suffell. It’s been an amazing ten years Matt, and we wish you all the best for the future. Of course, we’ll still see your smiling face at The Deck Café most mornings and lunchtimes – so will

Hunter Valley Vineyards Boutique Cheesery

continue to stop in for a coffee and chat (you should too!) Also celebrating an anniversary this month are Lovedale’s Jan and Jorg Gartlemann who are celebrating Gartelmann Wines’ 20th Vintage. Having spent the past two decades producing some of the Hunter Valley's most awarded wines, this dynamic duo has much to be proud of and this month we talk to them about how it all began.

CHEESE FACTORY

Also in Lovedale, local wineries, and chefs get creative with combining pies and wines, resulting in a pairing experience to tempt the taste buds and have you coming back for more! Luckily this event will run not only throughout May but also June, so you’ll have a number chances to savour these delicious treats – nothing pie in the sky about this one!

• Tasting rooms open daily 9am to 5.30pm. • Cheese-making and maturation room viewing all day. • Complimentary instructional cheese-making tutorial daily 11am and 3pm.

Don’t get so wrapped up in the festival spirit that you forget about Mother’s Day this month. Of course, just like any other special occasion, we celebrate this in style in Wine Country and in this issue you can get loads of ideas about different ways to spoil your Mum. Happy Mothers Day to all the Mums – Enjoy!

SANGIOVESE

The weather may be starting cool down in the Hunter Valley but it’s not time to hibernate, it’s time to celebrate – with a number of events throughout May and June turning up the heat!

The man behind the menus of two of the Hunter’s most popular restaurants is hanging up the apron for one of his restaurants this month.

Synonymous with the red wines of Tuscany and all the romanticism that goes with it, Sangiovese is becoming increasingly popular in its adopted home of Australia.

ABSINTHE Ritual At Two Fat Blokes

Our 80 minute Divine Signature Treatment includes a calming back massage as well as a facial tailored to your skins needs. All treatments include complimentary use of the Day Spa facilies including steam room, spa bath and relaxaon lounge.

WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN They’re known for their gourmet wine tours, but the Hunter’s “Two Fat Blokes” are now offering an experience that visitors to the vineyards won’t find elsewhere – the ritual of absinthe. Historically referred to as “la fée verte” or the green fairy, absinthe is an anise‐flavoured spirit derived from three main herbal ingredients ‐ grand wormwood, green anise and sweet fennel. Originating in the late 18th century, absinthe rose to prominence in Switzerland and France and was frequently associated with literary and artistic circles. Everyone from Ernest Hemingway and Oscar Wilde to Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh were known to indulge in the highly alcoholic drink with its distinctive green hue. But the development of absinthe was not welcomed by all, with the spirit banned in the United States and much of Europe by 1915 after being portrayed (without evidence) as an addictive psychoactive drug and hallucinogen. Hunter connoisseurs keen to taste the “green fairy” for themselves can head out to Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Kitchen, for their traditional Absinthe Ritual at its Pokolbin premises on Friday and Saturday nights. Patrons can select from an extensive range of absinthe from France and Switzerland, which have been crafted to serve as an aperitif before your meal. The spirits range in alcoholic content and flavours, from the Lemercier Absinthe (45%), with a fruity apple influence and a medium anise content, through to the Lemercier Amer (72%), a spicy absinthe that provides hints of nutmeg and cinnamon along with dried fruits. But drinking absinthe is about more than just trying a new flavour ‐ it’s about the ritual. Drinks are served with a specific set of traditional instructions involving ice cold water, a French sugar cube and a perforated spoon. At Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Kitchen, the absinthe ritual is perfectly complemented by a selection from their mouth‐watering menu. Choose a combination of dishes or opt for one of the indulgent Absinthe Packages, ranging from the $75 Toulouse‐Lautrec, which offers one glass of absinthe with two sharing plates of your choice, through to the Edith Paif package for $210, which allows you to savour three glasses of absinthe with bread, two sharing plates and two mains. The annual Tocal Field Days will be held at Tocal College on May 5-7, showcasing the latest in innovative farming technologies and techniques. But the three-day event isn’t just aimed at those who live their lives on the land, with organisers looking to tap into the growing number of city and suburban dwellers interested in urban and community gardens. Tocal Field Days manager Wendy Franklin said the focus was on encouraging more people from all walks of life to grow and cook their own food. “You don’t need a huge parcel of land to grow your own food,” she said.

GET HANDS ON At Tocal Field Days 2017

Urban food production can help bring the paddock far closer to the plate for those living in the city, according to the organisers of one of the region’s premier agricultural events.

“City families especially will be surprised and delighted at what they can do in their own backyards. “Slow Food Hunter Valley will also be on site to share the secrets of the kitchen.” The event began more than three decades ago and has grown to become one of the most anticipated dates on the NSW rural calendar, attracting around 30,000 visitors through the gates each year.

It features products from hundreds of exhibitors as well as a host of demonstrations, workshops, competitions and animal displays, ensuring the field days cater for everyone from full-time agriculturalists through to hobby farmers, tree-changers and families. The 2017 event will showcase the latest in innovative farming techniques and technologies including everything from solar energy through to fencing construction, as well as a vast range of craft products and a tasty selection of fine food and wine.

Education is also high on the agenda at the field days, with talks and workshops to cover a range of topics over the three days including the safe handling of cattle, while a dedicated area has been set up for those interested in picking up a tip or two from the regular fencing demonstrations. Those wanting to get a little more hands-on during their visit to the field days can take part in one of the many ruralthemed competitions on offer at Tocal, including the third annual billy boiling event. Competitors will be given a tomahawk, a block of wood and a box of matches, before being challenged to race each other and the clock to build a fire to get their billy boiling. Heats will be held throughout the field days, with the quickest time recorded over the three days earning that competitor bragging rights, great prizes and a shiny silver “billy” trophy. Entry is open to those aged 16 years and older. Those who prefer to boil their water in a kitchen setting can also put their skills to the test in the popular Bake and Burn event. This will see budding chefs aged seven to 16, as well as high school and TAFE hospitality students, take part in a live cook-off in front of a crowd in the Good Food & Wine Hall on May 5 and 7.

Of course, the entertainment doesn’t stop there, with the animal nursery, piglet and chicken racing sure to prove a hit with the youngest members of the family, while the region’s most talented junior singers and musicians will keep those country vibes flowing as part of the “Talent at Tocal” showcase.

If your creativity lends itself more to the craft arena, there’s always the Maitland Country Beanie Competition, hosted by the Maitland Group of the Knitters’ Guild.

Single day tickets to the Tocal Field Days cost $18 for adults, $13 for seniors and just $1 for children aged five to 16 years, while a “come back pass” allowing re-entry on the following day costs an additional $10.

Those looking for an event with a little more grunt should check out the eighth annual ute muster. This will see up to 60 vehicles battle it out

TO DO

Hunter Festival

Vibes! WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN

Clear your calendars and loosen your belts... It’s festival time in the Hunter Valley.

Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair Source: Facebook

While May is officially the end of Autumn, in the Hunter, it also marks the start of a season of celebration, as the region launches into a period packed with truly fabulous events. From food and wine festivals guaranteed to take you to a new level of indulgence to celebrations of the Hunter’s agricultural foundations, the next few months will provide plenty of reasons for locals and tourists alike to explore just what our amazing region has to offer. We’re one of the oldest and most respected wine regions in the country, so when it comes to celebrating our status we certainly don’t do things by halves! Held throughout the months of May and June, the Hunter Valley Wine and Food Festival is a two-month showcase of the epicurean pleasures to be found within our region, taking in everything from wine tours and cooking classes to gourmet dinners and winemaking workshops. A celebration of our diversity and incredible hospitality, the annual festival offers something to suit every taste, with signature events including the Whispering Brook Olive Long Table Luncheon, Glandore Burning of the Barrel evening, Cheese Lovers Festival and the Meet the Farmer Dinner.

The Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair, held on May 6, takes the party to the streets as winemakers and providores converge on Ogilvie Street, Denman for this annual celebration of Upper Hunter producers. The event attracts thousands of visitors to Denman each year, eager to taste the best of what this rural area has to offer. Renowned local chefs will be cooking up a storm, and there will be a wonderful array of locally made fresh produce such as olives, cheese, bread and chocolate that will certainly satisfy the most ravenous of appetites.

A relatively new event on the festival calendar is the Hunter Valley Food & Film Festival held from May 4 to 14. That’s eleven days and nights of films, food and fun (with a glass or two of fine wine for good measure) – sounds like a celluloid-style heaven for film buffs and foodies alike!

Live music from seven bands and solo acts will keep the festival vibe pumping, while a mammoth wood chopping competition, helicopter rides and plenty of kids’ entertainment will ensure it an affair to remember for all ages.

The Hunter Valley Food and Film Festival will be a veritable feast for the senses, with locally made fine wines, gourmet food from local restaurants and providores and some of your favourite Australian films on a big screen set up in the picturesque surrounds of a vineyard. Events include the short film festival Flickerfest, Friday evening dinners with local winemakers and film workshops.

Of course, you can’t spend every weekend wining and dining, so why not throw in a little incidental exercise and shop till you drop at the Handmade in the Hunter Markets.

Presented by Around Hermitage Wine & Food Trail, there will be plenty of wine, food and film related activities to keep you busy during the day before the main event kicks off when the sun goes down. But the Lower Hunter isn’t the only wine region in the Hunter utilising the allure of locally produced wine and food to create a festival-style event this month.

thb 14 | MAY 2017

Held within the grounds of the award-winning Kevin Sobels Wines in Pokolbin on May 13 and 27, the artisan markets are a veritable treasure trove of hand-crafted, homemade and one-of-a-kind creations, lovingly produced by Hunter Valley artisans. Perfect for those looking for a special gift or unique addition to your home or wardrobe, the meet-the-maker market gives you the chance to talk with the grower, maker or artist themselves, learn the stories behind the creation and marvel at the creative and artistic ingenuity of the Hunter’s artisan community.

Of course, too much shopping is never enough, so on May 14 and June 12, why not head over to the historic village of Wollombi to check out the wares on sale at the Wollombi Village Markets. Featuring more than 100 stalls, the Wollombi Village Markets are an eclectic mix of local produce and crafts, plants, clothes, tools, bric-a-brac and more. The trip will be worthwhile for more than just the shopaholic too, with different local community groups responsible for running each market, ensuring they benefit a cross section of the small community. Once all that browsing has worked up your appetite, you can sample the variety of food available at the market or head into town to check out the cafes and tavern in the gorgeous Wollombi village itself.

Held in and around the grounds of the Vintage Golf Resort, it is a recreational running event like no other, featuring everything from a full 42.2km marathon to a 21.1km half marathon, 10km run, 6km run and a fun 2km kids’ marathon. With historic homesteads, international golf resorts and some of the most famous wineries in Australia, there will be plenty of distractions to keep your mind off the pain and exhaustion of running! There’s also a range of sport, health and local produce exhibitions as well as live entertainment to enjoy once you cross the finish line, ensuring the Winery Running Festival is the perfect way to work off a few of the calories consumed during the past few months of festival fun!

Topping the list of wine-soaked festivals is the iconic annual Lovedale Long Lunch held on the weekend of May 20 to 21 - a tantalising food and wine event that is now celebrating its 24th year. The brainchild of a small group of local vignerons, the Lovedale Long Lunch was first uncorked in 1994 as an event to promote Lovedale as a premium wine producing area and tourist attraction in its own right. The two-day wine, food and music festival is based on a progressive style lunch and is held across seven local wineries with each showcasing a selection of gourmet dishes prepared by some of the region’s top chefs. Featuring gourmet food, premium wine and live entertainment, you don’t need an excuse to gather a few friends together and hop onto one of the many bus tours that make the trip out to Lovedale for the twoday event. Now in its 27th year, the Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces celebrates the rich agricultural history of the region and its strong connection with the Merino sheep. Held over the June long weekend (June 10- 12), with a theme of “Cast Off”, the 2017 event will be one to remember, with more than 100 market stalls, sheep shearing demonstrations, sheep yard dog trials, wood carving, vintage vehicle displays and a thrilling team penning competition among the attractions. Of course, the highlight of the festival each year would have to be the famous Running of the Sheep, which sees more than 200 sheep dressed in their finest red woollen socks trotting down the main street – a sight that has to be seen to be believed!

Festival of the Fleeces

A Schwartz Family Company initiative, the fifth annual Hunter Valley Wine Festival takes place within the grounds of the picturesque Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley on June 24. Promoted as a “one-stop-shop” for wine lovers, visitors will be able to discover and taste the premium offerings of some of the best wine producers in the region without having to drive for hours. This year’s event is expected to feature around 60 exhibitors made up of some of the region’s best wineries, breweries and gourmet food producers. The diversity of the Hunter is at the heart of its success as a tourist destination – and as the location for a number of other festivals. After a couple of months feasting on the best food and wine the Hunter has to offer, there is no better antidote to excess than the popular Winery Running Festival held on July 16.

LOCAL

The Next Chapter for

MATT DILLOW He was the man behind the menu that everyone knew, the chef who had taken a long-closed restaurant and turned it into one of the best places to dine in the Hunter Valley. But Locals Night at The Verandah Restaurant will soon be missing one of its key ingredients, with owner Matt Dillow deciding, after ten years, to hand the pans on to somebody else. He will sign off with his signature tapas offering on May 14, but if you haven’t already booked in for the five-course degustation dinner forget about it – his final Locals Night is already well and truly sold out. Born and raised in Sydney, Matt had established himself as a chef and travelled extensively through Europe before deciding to move to the Hunter in 2007 to open his own restaurant. His heart was set on The Verandah Restaurant in the picturesque grounds of Calais Estate, which had once been run by iconic Hunter chef Robert Molines but was now sadly neglected, having been closed for 12 years. Matt took on the challenge of restoring the Pokolbin eatery to its former glory, and during the past ten years has helped it become one of the best restaurants in the Hunter Region. Along the way, he also took over the restaurant lease at Gartelmann Estate in Lovedale to create The Deck Café and launched Twine Restaurant at Wynwood Estate with his long-time friend Adam Ireland, a fellow chef from Sydney.

SANDALYN ESTATE Wander the wild side and enjoy the rich heritage and pristine beauty of the Lovedale region along Wilderness Road, one of Australia's oldest and most historic wine trails. Fuchs family named wines have been associated with premium wines since 1626. The tradition continues in the Hunter region with our range of family-produced Sparkling wines.

If running three venues wasn’t enough, Matt also branched out to create a catering company and a gourmet produce business. For the past few years, he has also been running food, wine and produce tours to Tasmania and New Zealand, as well as helping his mentor run a similar concept in Italy.

They plan to break into the wedding reception market, as well as tapping into Amanda’s Maltese background and their love of Mediterranean food to create a Cypriot mezze menu. “It’s still going to be a tapas restaurant. However it’s the type of tapas they would eat in Cyprus,” she said.

With so many plates in the air, Matt said the time had come to pass one “The main course will be done over a charcoal grill, with small joints of on to someone else, giving him a greater opportunity to concentrate on meat served to the tables off the sword. his other ventures. “There will be four courses, but within that, there will be 15 dishes going “After ten years, it is time for a change,” he said. out to the tables – so really it is business as usual just with a different “As much as I love Verandah - I’ve always said it was my baby – and while flair on the food.” it will be very sorely missed, it will be a weight off my shoulders that gives me a bit more time for other things. “Verandah is my biggest achievement – I took a restaurant from being closed for 12 years to what it is today, one of the top 10 restaurants in the Hunter Valley.

“I feel proud of what I’ve done with the place, and I’m happy to move it on to new hands.” The owners of those hands are in fact quite familiar faces already at Verandah, with Matt selling the restaurant to its current operations manager, Amanda Suffell, and her husband, Tim. Amanda has worked at the venue for the past 15 months, while Tim was Matt’s head chef at Verandah for its first two-and-a-half years. It will be a welcome return to the Calais Estate venue for Tim, who has spent two years working in civil construction but had been itching to get back into the kitchen. Amanda said that while the popular Locals Nights tradition will stay, the new owners do have their own plans for the restaurant once they take control on May 15.

MEET THE MAKER

Karen Scott Murals WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN After more than two decades teaching the next generation of aspiring artists, Karen Scott’s own career as a painter has gone to the dogs – literally! The Martinsville woman has switched from teaching art to selling it, putting her own skills into practice as a pet portrait artist and muralist. From humble beginnings painting her own pooch’s portrait, she now has a flourishing business – Karen Scott Murals – which sees her create custom artworks for doting pet owners, as well as murals for homeowners and businesses. “I spent 21 years as a high school visual arts teacher travelling to the Central Coast to teach every day,” Karen said. “And while I thoroughly enjoyed teaching the skills of art-making to aspiring young artists, I rarely had the time to enjoy creating my own art. “Never in my wildest dreams did I ever dare to imagine that one day I would resign from teaching to pursue my passion for art and actually create my own small business from it!”

Hunter Valley

Owners email a photo of their pet to Karen, who then creates what she calls her “stylised realism” portraits either with paint on canvas, watercolour and pencil on paper or as a pet stone portrait. Tapping into people’s love of animals even further, Karen has also created a range of more than 600 hand-sculpted dog, cat and animal magnets and brooches, as well as producing a line of original gift cards based on her murals and portraits. Aside from the custom commissions, Karen sells her quirky and unique range of artworks and products at the Handmade in the Hunter Markets, which are held each month on the grounds of Kevin Sobels Wines. “I love market day and look forward to every single one, along with the promise of meeting new clients who would like their own fur-children painted as a treasured portrait or pet stone!” she said. You can check out Karen’s work online at www.karenscottmurals.com.au or stop by her stall at this month’s markets, which will be held on May 13 and 27 from 9am to 3pm.

GARTELMANN WINES

Two Decades Later

“When asked by our first Vineyard Manager, David Lowe, what I wanted to achieve, my answer was that I wanted to make the equivalent of Grange in the Hunter Valley. “Of course, this was a high and lofty ambition, but with so much competition and some of them being many generations old wineries, we had to aim high to survive.”

Celebrating their 20th vintage in 2017, how things have changed for Gartelmann Wines since they started out back in 1996.

The vineyard was converted to High Trellis, and the unirrigated vines were irrigated, all of which came at significant expense. It raised concerns that they may be over capitalising, but the investment paid off, rewarding them with a large number of gold, silver and bronze medals.

Having spent the past two decades producing some of the Hunter Valleys finest and most awarded wines, Gartelmann Wines in Lovedale have much to be proud of.

After ten years of hard work, some major improvements and winning numerous medals and trophies, Jorg and Jan sold the vineyard in 2006 but retained the property and cellar door located on Lovedale Road.

In 1996, after a career in the IT industry, Jorg Gartelmann and his wife Jan quit the computer business and Sydney to move to the Hunter Valley, where they bought a rundown (although promising) vineyard in the Lovedale area, known then as George Hunter Estate.

With the sale of the vineyard, Jorg decided to adopt the ways of the French and become a ‘negociant’ ‐ buying only specially selected, high‐ quality grapes to produce wine under his label.

Their first harvest was in 1997, which involved them selling most of their grapes from the 40 acres of vines to local wineries, keeping only a small amount of Chardonnay and Shiraz for themselves. In 1998, they moved into full production, making wines under the Gartelmann label and specialising in the classic Hunter Valley varieties of Semillon and Shiraz, for which they have won multiple awards.

While remaining entrenched in the Hunter Valley, Jorg and Jan went about finding the best possible vineyards in select regions in NSW and as a result have established strong relationships with a number of growers in the regions of Hunter Valley, Mudgee, Rylstone and the higher elevations of Orange. It enabled them to set new benchmarks for Gartelmann Wines and extend their wine styles with varieties that are making a mark in these respective regions.

“This proved to be quite a challenge as 40 acres of vines produced about So, look out for the giant magpie as you drive along Lovedale Road ‐ and 100 tonnes and, as newcomers, we then had to sell about 7,500 cases of when you do, you will know that you have discovered a real gem of a producer with some outstanding wines. wine a year,” said Jorg.

Located in the idyllic Lovedale area on Lovedale Road, Gartelmann Wines produces wines from NSW’s premium wine regions. The welcoming cellar door extends to the adjoining Deck Café overlooking the picturesque bush setting. Enjoy 18 wines including Hunter Valley Semillon and Shiraz or Mudgee Shiraz through to the trophy-winning Orange region Merlot and our new Pinot Gris. The luscious Liqueur Muscat is a must to try.

Sangiovese... The Grape at the “Heart” of Italy

Synonymous with the red wines of Tuscany and all the romanticism that goes with it, Sangiovese is the most‐planted red grape in Italy and is the most important grape variety used in the production of Tuscany's greatest red wines and provides the backbone to the popular wines of Chianti.

No other Italian red commands greater worldwide recognition than Sangiovese and in an increasingly competitive global wine market, Italy’s abundance of native grapes provides a welcome point of difference. From the Latin for sanguis Jovis, or “the blood of Jove,” mercurial Sangiovese has awarded Italy its best wine moments and became a major component of the super Tuscan revolution that brought Italy to the forefront of global wine. Outside of Tuscany, Sangiovese is widely planted in Lazio, Umbria, Marche and of course Corsica where the variety is known as Nielluccio. Worldwide, it has travelled to California and Australia, where its high acidity is an asset in the hot climate. This exciting Italian variety is becoming increasingly popular in its adopted home of Australia where the variety is known for being adaptable to many types of vineyard soils and has proved suitable for cultivation across many Australian wine regions. Although Sangiovese has been planted in Australian vineyards for the past few decades, it has only recently become a serious contender to the classic powerhouses red varieties. With the quality ever improving and Australians focusing more and more on enjoying wine with food, Sangiovese has found a permanent place in our wine scene.

thb 24 | MAY 2017

Here in the Hunter Valley, Sangiovese was first planted in 1995 at Tintilla Estate by the Lusby family. Plantings have now grown to include at least 15 other vineyards in the region – amongst them Adina Vineyard, Pokolbin Estate (Belebula Vineyard) and Kevin Sobels Wines. The variety produces elegant wines with powerful aromas and is notoriously high in tannin and acidity but lighter in fruit. The flavours characteristic of Sangiovese range from cherries and red plums to herbs, spices and tea like flavours. The wines tend to be medium bodied, dry and usually quite savoury. The use of oak has become increasingly popular and used to draw the richer flavours from the grapes. While Italian styles tend to have more acid and tannin, the Australian Sangiovese wines tend to be a little fruitier, with riper flavours and higher alcohol. However, there is a trend for the styles to converge. This wine is easy to understand and is enjoyable in its youth, but it’s also rewarding with moderate to long ageing. Sangiovese is also a component in many of Tuscany's "Super Tuscans," where it is blended with various proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, or Syrah. What sets a classic Tuscan Sangiovese apart from the rest is it's refined and wonderfully pronounced backbone of acidity, and it is this quality that makes Sangiovese an unrivalled choice for the dinner table. Like all Italian wines, Sangiovese demands food. With its dryness and high acidity, Sangiovese is extremely food‐friendly and perfect with Italian dishes and tomato‐based dishes like Ragu or Osso Buco. The acidity in both Sangiovese and the tomato‐based food neutralise one another to create a wonderful marriage of flavours. It’s also well‐matched to the flavours of chicken, grilled red meat, lamb, slow roasted pork, pastas, stews or well‐aged cheeses. Lighter styles of Sangiovese have proven to be useful red wines to pair with fish, especially when grilled or roasted.

HUNTER WINES

POKOLBIN ESTATE 2013 Belebula Sangiovese With a freakish competition record, Pokolbin Estate has a reputation for producing outstanding wines and has had significant success with their Mediterranean‐style red wines which includes the Sangiovese grown on their Belebula Vineyard. TASTING The popular Belebula Sangiovese does not disappoint. This is an elegant, fruit driven style of wine that has a plethora of berry fruit and a touch of pepper and spice. It is savoury with red fruits and vibrant tannins and good supporting acidity. FOOD MATCH Just superb with wood fire pizza, tomato‐based pasta dishes, risotto or Mediterranean salads.

ADINA VINEYARD 2014 Sangiovese Vines have been grown on Adina Vineyard in Lovedale since the 1860’s, with the modern vineyard mostly planted in the 1980’s. TASTING A medium bodied wine with berry fruit flavours including cherries, spice and hints of cinnamon and star anise. The nose is complex floral and spicy and the palate shows light tannins and balanced acidity. A perfect luncheon wine or whenever a lighter style red is preferred. FOOD MATCH A great accompaniment to veal, antipasti or pan fried salmon

TINTILLA ESTATE 2015 Saphira Sangiovese Sangiovese has proved very successful in the Tintilla Estate vineyard for its flavours and style. The Saphira Sangiovese is produced only in the best years, with the wine aged in 30% new oak and the remainder in old oak barrels. It is bottled after one year and held for another year before release. TASTING From an extraordinary year, this Sangiovese is a full bodied yet firm and elegant wine. It is medium ruby in colour with aromas of blackberries, cherries and red currant. The tannins are soft, dry and persistent. FOOD MATCH Recommended with spicy sauced pasta dishes and mild tasting red meats.

It’s Time to

DIG THE FIG Plump, soft and sweet, fresh figs are in season and are the perfect addition to your autumn salads and desserts – or simply enjoyed on their own. Figs are soft, pear-shaped fruits, often green, brown or purple in colour. They are lusciously sweet with a texture that combines the chewiness of their flesh, the smoothness of their skin, and the crunchiness of their seeds. Most figs are dried, either from exposure to sunlight or through an artificial process, creating a sweet and nutritious dried fruit that can be enjoyed throughout the year. Not only do they taste great, figs also possess many nutritional benefits as they are high in natural minerals, sugars and soluble fibre. They are rich in minerals including potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and copper and are a good source of antioxidant vitamins A, E and K. A fresh fig is ready to eat when it is soft to the touch and sweet smelling. When choosing figs, select those that are plump and tender, have a rich, deep colour and are free from bruising. Figs are quickly perishable and are best eaten within one to two days after purchase. Figs are a favourite ingredient amongst chefs, as they go wonderfully in both sweet and savoury dishes. They pair well with nuts, chocolate, orange, goats cheese and salty ingredients like blue cheese and prosciutto. Figs are perfect added to salads or cheese boards, poached whole with spices, baked into fruit tarts or even as a jam.

The Winewise Championship, known as the toughest wine shows around, showcases only the country’s best varieties, with the criteria that each one must have previously been awarded gold medals or major trophies. Tamburlaine’s 2004 Museum Reserve Riesling qualified as it was awarded a gold medal at the 2016 International Riesling Challenge in Canberra. Such high calibre wins by Tamburlaine’s 2004 Museum Reserve Riesling demonstrate the quality and longevity of Rieslings that are produced at altitude in the premium wine growing area of Orange, NSW. The Orange region, not normally known for its production of fine Riesling, is now standing firmly amongst its better‐known Riesling rivals of Eden Valley, Clare Valley and Tasmania.

Patience Pays Off for

TAMBURLAINE They say good things come to those who wait and that is often the case when it comes to wine. Tamburlaine Organic Wines recently saw the rewards of their patience and expertise, with their 2004 Museum Reserve Riesling being awarded 4.5 stars in a line‐up of over 460 at the 2017 Winewise Championship.

In the line‐up at the Winewise Championship, Tamburlaine’s 2004 Museum Reserve Riesling was showcased as the finest example of aged Riesling, while other competitors put forward younger varieties. Tamburlaine Organic Wines is anticipating further recognition for this outstanding wine, and with time expect many of the current vintage wines to age and perform just as well as the 2004.

Tamburlaine’s 2004 Museum Reserve Riesling (RRP $49) is available for purchase at Tamburlaine Organic Wines cellar door on McDonalds Road, Pokolbin or over the phone on 1800 659 956.
