As we go to print the temperatures are settling into a more comfortable Autumn ambience. The leaves may be yellowing and falling from the vines, but there’s no time to hibernate in Wine Country with a slew of unique events turning up the heat in the cooler months. The month of May welcomes the 26th annual Lovedale Long Lunch. Held on the third weekend of May, this progressive style lunch from winery to winery in the beautiful Lovedale area is a festival of the senses, as well as the taste-buds. If you’re looking for a home away from home in the Hunter Valley, there’s something comfortably familiar about Spicer's Guesthouse Retreat. Whether it’s the brick block buildings and walls of solid sandstone that carry with them three decades of memories from its former life as Peppers, or the spectacular wall of wine that pays tribute to local winemaking legends, a visit to Spicers Guesthouse feels like spending time with old friends. We look behind the scenes of their amazing refurbishment in this month’s issue.

The Hunter Valley is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year, but Autumn has that special magical something – a charming collection of quaint, boutique accommodation, mountain and vineyard landscapes complete with numerous hues of brown and red, cooler days and nights, warm open fires, cosy restaurants and cafés serving up heart-warming dishes, welcoming cellar doors and of course the wine. In this issue, you will find our favourite Autumn wines with plenty of sips to savour. May wouldn’t be May without recognising Mother’s Day. Sunday 12th May sees various organised events throughout the Hunter Valley. From the simple to the extravagant, you would be hardpressed not to find a way to show your appreciation and love to the one person who knows all your foibles and loves you anyway! Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums – we hope you have a beautiful day.

Enjoy!

Handmade in the Hunter Meet the Maker Inspired by Nature...

Jojo Collective WORDS Michelle Meehan

North Rothbury massage therapist Jodie Baulch understands how certain scents can evoke particular memories. The rich, alluring smell of lavender, for instance, always takes her back to a childhood trip to a Tasmanian lavender farm, which left her intoxicated by the smell of the flowers and the beauty of the vast paddocks of purple-headed plants swaying in the breeze. It is this undoubted connection between aroma and memory that Jodie draws upon when concocting her range of natural perfume oils, which she sells at the Handmade in the Hunter markets under the brand Jojo Collective. “Perfume has a way of telling a story, and I certainly like to draw from a memory or an event when creating a new blend,” she said.

Jojo Collective is inspired by nature and the things around me. A perfume scent can open our hearts and minds to certain memories, emotions and moods - when a particular aroma fills the air, it instantly connects and awakens our senses.

Jojo Collective perfume oils combine natural blends of pure essential oil, resins and absolutes, diluted with a carrier oil such as sweet almond or fractious coconut oil. The current range includes the heady lavender-based Indigo Lavandula, and the seductive Close Encounters, which features citrussy top notes of lime and tangerine balanced with the sweeter heart notes of jasmine and geranium. A new scent she is currently working on - Olive - also features geranium in honour of her mother, with the perfume oil due to be released in time for Mother’s Day. “I'm working on a beautiful perfume oil on behalf of my mum who passed away ten years ago this December from heart disease,” Jodie said. “In her memory, I've called it Olive, which is her name, and have combined a range of essential oils with fractured coconut oil to create a perfume oil that reminds me of her. She loved geraniums, so I have used that scent to create it, and I will be donating 10 per cent of each one sold online to the Heart Disease Foundation.” A seductive and romantic men’s cologne called Shades Black rounds out her current range of products, with plans to release a second cologne, Mountain Wild, around the middle of the year. You can check out Jodie’s range of products at this month’s Handmade in the Hunter markets, which will be held at Kevin Sobels Wines from 9am-3pm on May 11 and 25.

BRINGING EUROPE TO THE HUNTER WORDS Michelle Meehan

If you’re looking for a home away from home in the Hunter Valley, there’s something comfortably familiar about Spicers Guesthouse Retreat. Whether it’s the brick block buildings and walls of solid sandstone that carry with them three decades of memories from its former life as Peppers, or the spectacular wall of wine that pays tribute to local winemaking legends, a visit to Spicers Guesthouse feels like spending time with old friends. And that’s just the way General Manager Mark Whitnell likes it. “Spicers is all about relaxed luxury. It's about surprising and delighting our customers,” he said. “Having the name 'Guesthouse' is a super thing for us because, fundamentally, we're welcoming guests into our house and it seems to be that guests are responding to that, feeling like it's relaxed, it's casual, it's coming into our home...

People are already telling us this where they come to chill out, and they will absolutely be back. It’s their ‘go-to’ place now.

The former Peppers Guest House was purchased by Spicers Retreats in 2016, becoming the company’s ninth - and largest - property in their expanding portfolio of boutique tourist accommodation. With 49 accommodation rooms including a four-bedroom standalone cottage, conference facilities, a restaurant and almost 40 acres of picturesque countryside, Spicers Guesthouse Retreat offers a more event-focused alternative to the company’s neighbouring property, Spicers Vineyards Estate. Spicers spent two years, and in excess of $30 million, bringing owner Jude Turner’s vision for the historic property to life, before unveiling the completed renovations in November last year. “It was greatly anticipated,” Mark said. “I think the way we as staff looked at it as we were gearing up to reopen, was that the Guesthouse was ‘asleep’ for a couple of years while it underwent a significant refurbishment and we had the great privilege of reawakening the old girl and bringing her back to life. “I think it brings something fresh and new but still boutique, of a very high end but very approachable and affordable option to accommodation in the Hunter Valley.” All the existing buildings were extensively refurbished, while a series of new spaces, including a cosy sandstone firepit and the striking infinity edge pool, were also constructed to deliver a five-star experience for guests. A custom-designed “wine wall” is also a popular talking point, featuring a selection of vintages that pay homage to the history of the region, while also in effect doubling as the wine list for the on-site restaurant. “The wine wall was designed perhaps with the view in mind that it would be incredibly visually appealing,” Mark said. becoming the true centrepiece of the retreat. Renamed Eremo, which means hermitage, the restaurant offers a modern contemporary Italian menu that ties in nicely with the European feel of the Guesthouse experience.

“ (Continued) But as we moved through the project, we were really keen to make sure that we paid great homage to those legends. If you look at the top of the wine wall where there is a triangular section, every wine in that area represents one of the inducted legends of the Hunter wine industry and the idea, as we slowly develop it, is to be able to stop and talk about one of them, whether it’s Tyrrell's, Brokenwood, Drayton’s, Mount Pleasant or whoever. “Wine is so subjective that I don't want to particularly be telling people what they should be tasting on their back palate, but we are in wine country, so I find people really are interested in the stories.” The former Chez Pok restaurant was completely transformed during the renovations by multi-hatted Executive Chef Cameron Matthews,

Guesthouse is not a common word in Australia. To me, it feels quite European, and it's fortunate that the restaurant, being Italian, also provides that sort of European influence in the property,” Mark said.

“When we created Eremo, we really wanted to pick up a piece of Italy and drop it in the Hunter, and so what followed were discussions around what that would look like, what would it feel like, what would be the compelling attraction and what would the food look like? “As I said before, it's about bringing guests into our home and making them feel very, very welcome, so the food style reflects that. We don't bring out bread on a side plate, we bring it out on a plate, and people pick it up and rip it to pieces and dip it in oil because that's what family dinner is like around the table in a European country like Italy.” For Executive Chef Cameron Matthews, Eremo feels almost like returning to his roots, having started his career as a chef working for an Italian family. But after years running hatted restaurants, including ten years at various Spicers Retreats, diners should expect far more from a visit to Eremo than the standard Italian fare. “My first ten years of my career were actually spent with the one Italian family down in Brice in northwest Victoria, so for me to be cooking Italian again almost feels like, not a home-coming, but very familiar and very comfortable,” Cameron said. “For the people that know me and know my food from Queensland (at Spicers Clovelly Estate), we were cooking a very different style up there. It was very much modern European and very fine dining — lots of bells and whistles and plating stuff up with tweezers and whatnot. ►

There is no better setting on earth than Australia’s oldest wine region for Éremo’s distinctive brand of Modern Italian dining. In true Italian style, Éremo is the heart of Spicers Guesthouse. Generous and warm, it epitomises our approach to food and wine - that they go spectacularly well together, and that they are infinitely better when shared. Dine a la carte or ‘Avido’, where our chefs choose a selection of dishes from the menu for you. Come and discover the Hunter’s newest destination - Éremo at Spicers Guesthouse. “Whereas here it's all about flavour and taste and a whole new palette of fantastic ingredients. “We're still trying to work out what to classify ourselves as (at Eremo). I suppose the best way of describing it is that we are trying to create our own little region of Italy here in the Hunter Valley. “We’re not cooking classic Italian. We're cooking in an Italian way, but it's an Italian way that no-one's seen before in the fact that we're not in Italy, we're in the Hunter Valley. “We’re trying to take that traditional love, care, attention to detail, the conviviality over food, the connection over food, the sharing of food, and wine, and inject that into what we're doing as a restaurant. It's more about the feel of the Italian cuisine than Italian cuisine per se. “We want people to put down their mobile phones and talk to each other over food. It’s about connecting with people. It's about having a shared table of amazing food with amazing wines and sharing amazing company.” While the restaurant offers an a la carte menu, it is the special ‘avido’ selection that really has Cameron excited. Italian for “greedy”, avido is more of an experience than a meal, with guests who choose this option being treated to around four sets of food shared among the table. There is no set menu for the avido, with Cameron making it up as he goes along based on each table’s general preferences or the meat, seafood and produce he has on hand. This paves the way for a far more creative offering of dishes that can make the most of smaller batches of ingredients obtained from local producers. “It’s food that is plated to share, and it's kind of loosely four sets of food,” Cameron said. “We sort of do snacky stuff, and some lighter kind of entrées to start, and then the second set is pasta-based. The third set is main course-based, and then we serve a set of desserts. We try not to say the word courses, because then people go, ‘so it's a four-course degustation or a five-course degustation’. No, it's not. It's avido. “What I want each set to look like, I guess, is the type of food I used

to have and experience when I had dinner with the Italian family that I worked for. On Sunday afternoons when we'd closed we'd take up all the food that we'd cooked throughout the week and put it in the middle of the table, sit under the wisteria tree, have a couple of glasses of wine, and share all this food. “We’d have some crispy fried zucchini flowers maybe to start, and whatever risotto we had left over we would cook up off and turn it to arancini and some fish or whatever. There would also be a couple of bowls of pasta in the middle of the table, some meat, some salad and some potatoes, and a glass of wine. It was amazing – and so memorable. “That's what the avido is about. It's about the feeling of sitting under a wisteria tree with people that you love and care about and enjoying it — feeling the sun on your back, taking it easy, relaxing. All those amazing things that we don't really do these days because everyone's busy and they’re too busy looking at Instagram. “Avido is where we actually get creative, and it's where the value is in the love, care and attention to detail because we can cook truly passionately and truly from our hearts. And hopefully, it shows through.”

FOR THE FOODIES

Wonderful Food in a Unique Setting The Cellar Restaurant WORDS Salt&Peppa Reviews (This review has been reproduced with the permission of Salt&Peppa)

The Cellar Restaurant is in a word ‘‘unique’’ and without a doubt one of the finest restaurants in the Hunter. Owners Andy and Janet Wright have made The Cellar Restaurant a summer and winter favourite amongst both locals and visitors to the Hunter. In winter there is no better place to be with the centrally located fire keeping diners warm over the cooler months and in summer you get to enjoy the longer warmer evenings dining alfresco. The welcome is warm and friendly. We are shown to our table, close to the huge stone fireplace in the middle of the room, which gives the place an unpretentious and yet almost medieval feel, further enhanced by the lush foliage growing around the perimeter of the restaurants interior. After a quick study of the extensive menu, which is divided into sections that include oysters, smallgoods (for sharing), entrees, mains, from the grill, sauces and desserts, you soon come to realise why The Cellar is considered one of the Hunters most outstanding restaurants. Andy, who is also the head chef, has created a refreshingly diverse and well thought out menu with Mediterranean inspired influences and an emphasis on fresh local produce. The wine list is generous and includes a large range of excellent local Hunter Valley wines, as well as those from other regions around Australia and a few overseas comparisons thrown in for good measure. For entrée we deliberated long and hard over the Indian Spiced Kangaroo and Bass Strait Scallops with chorizo and white beans before finally settling on the Chargrilled Quail and the Queensland Prawns. The service was excellent and attentive, and we did not have to wait long before our entrees arrived. The quail was superbly presented

with a scotch egg, green tomato relish and fig balsamic. This delightfully simple dish with its complex flavours was beautifully prepared and delicious. The quail meat was delicate and tender, and the green tomato relish provided a wonderful contrast to the sweet and sour flavours of the fig balsamic. The Queensland prawns were a superb choice and accompanied by salt cod fritters and slow roasted tomato with caper and tarragon mayonnaise. Queensland prawns are always a crowd pleaser, and these did not disappoint - perfectly cooked and wonderfully offset by the saltiness of the capers and the tangy sweetness of the tarragon, which took the mayonnaise to a completely new level. The cod fritters were just as delicious, and these golden nuggets of deep-fried love had the perfect texture and delightful with the rich flavoured mayonnaise. For our main dishes we selected the free-range Berkshire Pork Chop and the Pan-Fried Barramundi with sides that included garlic mash and green beans with almonds. The Berkshire pork chop arrived perfectly prepared – succulent and juicy, and the sweetness of the meat was further enhanced by the spicy fig and apple relish. The crackling delicately perched on top of the chop was wonderfully golden and perfectly crisp. The pan-fried barramundi was served exactly how it should be, with the flesh firm and moist with a delicate flavour and served with beurre blanc sauce – a hot emulsified butter sauce reduced with white wine. To me, this was a perfect example of inspirational cooking with great flavour combinations. Dessert at The Cellar Restaurant is always hard to refuse. On this occasion, we let our inner-chocoholics loose with the Chocolate Tasting Plate of opera cake, white chocolate mousse, strawberry and hazelnut cremeau. The Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee with rhubarb jam and gingerbread ice cream was also something to be savoured, and so of course, both desserts were shared equally (sort of!) Despite the inequitable division, both desserts were a wonderful end to a perfect meal, and excellent with a glass of Constable Estate Moscato. There is a great deal to love about The Cellar Restaurant – the wonderful setting, the food and warm, attentive service. With the emphasis on simplicity of ingredients, great execution and presentation, The Cellar Restaurant is up there with the best in regional dining.

Morpeth Chapel Jazz is an annual event held in the iconic heritage town of Morpeth – just up the New England Highway from Wine Country. Each year exotic jazz talent from around the country gathers to share their sounds and stories over one extraordinary weekend as part of a joint venture of the three churches of Morpeth. Until the 1980s, Morpeth was a rundown village in fear of demolition. Then it was slowly rejuvenated as a destination and what was left of its charming buildings rescued from the bulldozer. A few local businesses joined together to establish a small jazz festival in the bicentenary year of 1988. The jazz festival soon acquired a life of its own and by 2000 had developed into a major event. Unfortunately, by 2004 the event had become logistically unmanageable as a street festival and came to a grinding halt. In 2009 Jazz returned to Morpeth when the Catholic, Anglican and Uniting churches of Morpeth got together to revive the Morpeth Jazz Festival as Chapel Jazz. Chapel Jazz aims to present traditional jazz in a welcoming environment to jazz lovers and their families and provide an enjoyable community experience. For more information and programmes visit www.chapeljazz.com

A Tragicomedy for Lovers of Fine Theatre For over twenty years Wollombi’s community theatre group, Valley Artists, has brought a range of plays to the stage in the lower Hunter: comedies, mysteries, children’s pantomimes, old plays and brand new ones. Their first major production for 2019, Woman in Mind, opens on June 14 at Laguna Hall. Written by one of Britain’s most popular and prolific playwrights, Alan Ayckbourn, Woman in Mind has been described as a tragicomedy and is regarded as one of the playwright’s best and most affecting works. Susan has a perfect life – a loving husband, a charming brother and a beautiful daughter. Or does she? An unfortunate encounter with a garden rake somewhere between the rose garden and the tennis courts of her palatial home leads her into the twilight zone, where nothing is quite what it seems. As Susan struggles to come to terms with her altered circumstances, she is forced to question what she really wants, who really does love her and ultimately, who she is. Ayckbourn tells Susan’s story through a series of increasingly humorous interactions with her nearest and dearest. From gently acerbic to rollicking farce, this lovely piece has a wide comic range and runs at a cracking pace. Directed by Micaela Elphick, whose previous directing credits for Valley Artists include The Business and Diving for Pearls, Woman in Minds features a stellar cast headed by Karen Jones as Susan. CAFE CULTURE

TWO FAT

BLOKES The Complete Wine & Food Experience WORDS Quentin von Essen

What began eleven years ago as two friends who owned a single van and shared a common passion for food and wine has grown into a thriving family business that now owns 11 luxury tour vehicles and employs more than 20 staff who operate more than seven different tours, as well as also running a gourmet kitchen, and creating joy through cheese in a delicatessen. The two friends were Peter (aka Sir Lunchalot) and Jan who wanted to share their love of all things to do with food and wine with visitors to the Hunter Valley. Peter eventually retired to enjoy more lunches than one man ever should, and Jan continues on with his wife Julie to indulge in what Two Fat Blokes is all about – a passion for providing customers with the best wine and food experiences possible and instilling in them a burning desire to return for more. In 2013 the Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Kitchen and Deli was opened to provide tour guests with a more complete wine and food experience. Since then the Kitchen and Deli has come into its own, offering delicious food and a seasonal menu serving up unique dishes with a European flair. The deli has a huge range of cheeses, smallgoods, and antipasto which at any time can be made into hampers for that perfect picnic amongst the vines. “It’s first and foremost a family business,” said Claudia who is the Business Development Manager for Two Fat Blokes and also Jan’s daughter. “Two Fat Blokes has always prided itself on being a front runner with everything we do. We are the only tour company that has its own kitchen and deli, which enables us to have complete control over the guest experience.” “The kitchen and deli are about good, honest and affordable food – we’re not here to compete with the amazing fine-dining restaurants of the Hunter Valley. Instead, we’re here to make sure that whether you want a quick baguette and a picnic, or a sit-down meal with loads of local and seasonal produce, you can always get something to eat! After all, we’re not called Two Skinny Blokes!” said Claudia.

yhv 28 | MAY 2019

Many of the products stocked in the deli are their own ‘Two Fat Blokes’ brand, from cheeses to oils, to their own wines. With the aim being to support local producers, they have all their branded products made specially for them by local suppliers. They also stock other brands, with many products being locally sourced and a few being imported from overseas. “We use local suppliers for basically everything except the cheeses,” said Claudia. “We love having a variety of cheeses from other parts of the world as there’s bound to be a few people who love certain styles that a certain region does best.” Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Tours have built on a reputation for always going that extra mile. They provide visitors with a choice of more than seven different tours with each tour incorporating a food experience – whether it be a cheese and wine masterclass, or something more exclusive such as a lunch with a local winemaker. “We believe it is important to provide for all needs, from the person who only wants an hour experience, right up to the person who knows exactly what they like and just wants to try a certain type of wine,” said Claudia. “We cater to both private and small group tours, and our itinerary constantly varies – if you’ve done a tour before, you can do the same tour again and almost always have a new and different experience”. “We also run monthly events at the Kitchen and try to support worthy causes with a portion of the profits going to that cause. For example, our High Cheese event in May has $10 of each ticket sold going to the McGrath Foundation”. Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Kitchen and Deli are currently located in temporary premises at Harkham Wines in Pokolbin with plans to move into their new ‘home’ on Hermitage Rd within the next 12 months. As well as the onsite Kitchen and Deli, the new premises will also include purpose-built rooms for cheese and wine masterclasses. Also planned are glamping tents which will serve as onsite accommodation. Check out the Two Fat Blokes upcoming “High Cheese” events on the last Sunday of every month – $75pp including four courses and bottomless bubbles. For more info visit www.twofatblokes.com.au

Not just spread on a wafer cracker (the experience is about the cheese, not the cracker guys, the cracker is just a vessel so that you don’t look like a crazed monster wildly stuffing cheese into your mouth with your bare hands), but Labna also has many, many other uses. Put it through a pasta sauce, toss some through a salad, make your mac and cheese just a little ‘extra’, or stir some through a soup. Labna has a lot of ways to make you love it. Tangy, but also smooth and creamy, Labna is a really unique cheese that will delight lovers of soft cheese at any dinner party.

Two Cheeses

To Turn you into an Un-Brie-Lievable Dinner Host Knowing just the right cheeses to put onto a cheese board to cap off your next dinner party doesn’t have to be difficult thanks to these two beauties from Two Fat Blokes. Two Fat Blokes Sundried Tomato and Garlic Labna This creamy ball of deliciousness is just magic - a taste sensation. Labna is made by straining yoghurt to produce a soft, creamy cheese that then is rolled into balls (of deliciousness) and preserved in jars of oil with various and optional flavours.

Caramelised Onion Cheddar This cheese is a piece of art. You know those people that you talk to, and they make you feel like you’re the most important person in the room? They’re just so genuinely lovely that they make you question what traumatic experience you must have repressed that stops you from also being that lovely? This cheese is that person, but without the guilt, you inevitably experience after realising you’ve been talking about yourself for 45 minutes. It’s delicate but also bold. It’s sweet thanks to the caramelised onions, but tart and sharp thanks to the cheddar. It’s a good level of crumbly, enough to give it a nice texture, but not so much that you leave the dinner party wondering how much of it is going to fall out of your clothing before you go for a shower later. The fun thing about this guy is that the longer you leave him out of the fridge, the sweeter he becomes. The cold brings out the cheddar taste, but as you mellow it out, the caramelised onion starts to shine through even more.

Celebrating Australia’s Truly Adaptable, Versatile and Outstanding Wine WORDS Quentin von Essen

Don’t you hate it when you hear that it’s International Grenache Day or International Pinot Noir Day and you are not prepared? Don’t worry this month we have you covered and can inform you that May 3 is International Sauvignon Blanc Day (but do we care) and May 9 is World Moscato Day – and yes, we do care! Also, this month, May 23 is International Chardonnay Day. Now, this is a day worth celebrating!

Australian Chardonnay holds a special place among Australian wine lovers and remains Australia’s top white variety and is second overall behind Shiraz. So popular is Chardonnay, that in 2018, 408,000 tonnes of Chardonnay were crushed across Australia – making up 47 per cent of the total white wine grape crush. Chardonnay, the noble, green-skinned grape, can trace its 1,000year heritage back to the revered vineyards of Burgundy and the medieval village of Chardonnay in the Mâconnais wine growing region of southern Burgundy. Today, it is one of the world’s greatest grape varieties that grow well in a variety of locations throughout the world and is also an important component of many sparkling wines, including Champagne. Chardonnay began its meteoric rise to fame in the late seventies and eighties when it was the “in wine” of the time. Fruit-forward, 'sunshine-in-a-bottle' became synonymous with Australian wine. Today, it is hard to think of Australian wine without thinking of Australian Chardonnay. It's a variety that has enjoyed the market

highs and withstood the lows with a remarkable level of resilience and continues to hold a special place in the heart of Australian wine lovers throughout the world. In fact, it was the Hunter Valley that led the way with Tyrrell’s 1971 Vat 47 Chardonnay initiating Australia’s love affair with this variety, causing Chardonnay sales to boom in the ’80s and ’90s. Such was the demand for Australian Chardonnay that the area of Chardonnay vines increased more than five-fold during this period so that in the 1990s Chardonnay became Australia’s most planted white wine grape variety and now accounts for more than half of Australia’s white wine production. Chardonnay is now grown in every wine region in Australia - from the humidity of the Hunter Valley to the cool crispness of the Yarra Valley, Adelaide Hills and Tasmania to the warmer regions of Margaret River and Barossa Valley. It is ideally suited to Australian conditions and reflects a taste of place wherever it's grown. One of the great virtues of Chardonnay is that it can produce compelling, complex and multi-layered wines capable of ageing from both warmer and cooler climates. Of all the white wines, Chardonnay is very responsive to the winemaker's craft – broadening the style possibilities and enabling the winemaker to create wine in a, particularly style that he or she considered desirable. This was the case when the market was dominated by the broader, buttery and toastier styles of wines that also had strong secondary characters. ►

These wines were big, rich and full-bodied with most not lasting more than a few years. You can have too much of a good thing though, and this peak in popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s gave way to a change in tastes and increased competition. The market turned to red wine, and Chardonnay consumers became disenfranchised by the buttery taste and high level of oak used in these wines. Chardonnay sales declined as consumer tastes turned towards lighter wines such as Pinot Grigio and the crisp cool-climate Sauvignon Blancs. But things change. Tastes change, fashion changes and Chardonnay changes! In recent years, we have witnessed the most remarkable change in premium Australian Chardonnay. Gone are the days of the fat, golden, oak-lavished style with Chardonnay making a comeback with styles that are lighter, more elegant and of course with a little less oak. The result is a wine that is brighter and fresher, with greater length and intensity, subtler and fruit-driven – something the golden oldies often lacked. Ranging from un-wooded, light and fresh to full-bodied barrel fermented and aged, this versatile grape can produce a range of styles that can be matched with just about any food – especially poultry dishes, pork, seafood or recipes that have a heavy cream or butter base. Oysters and salmon also pair well with the citrus flavours of a crisp Chardonnay. Of course, there’s also nothing better than a cool, sharp Chardonnay all by itself on a fine summer day and served at a moderate 12°C. Where to now for Australian Chardonnay? Presently, Chardonnay in Australia is as popular as it has ever been and it’s not showing any sign of waning. Demand continues for this popular wine which has done well to weather the onslaught of popular Sauvignon Blanc and the rapid surge of Pinot Gris/Grigio. The wine industry is also seeing a new generation of winemakers who are bringing experience, expertise, experimentation and bold ideas that are shaking up the Australian Chardonnay landscape and bringing new, exciting Chardonnays onto the market. ■

Varieties to Explore

In Autumn WORDS Quentin von Essen

For many, Autumn is a favourite time of the year, bringing with it a welcome reprieve from the summer heat. This change of seasons is as evident as the layers of flavour in a great glass of wine; it’s as if the earth is taking a deep sigh after the efforts of the growing season and is drawing energy back into the soil in preparation for the long-dormant winter months ahead. The Hunter Valley is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year, but Autumn has that special magical something – a charming collection of quaint, boutique accommodation, mountain and vineyard landscapes complete with numerous hues of brown and red, cooler days and nights, warm open fires, cosy restaurants and cafes serving up heart-warming dishes, welcoming cellar doors and of course the wine. Change is everywhere at the start of Autumn and as the seasons change, so do many of our drinking habits. For many of us, the changing seasons come with changing preferences in wine. Those crisp whites we crave in summer give way to heartier reds and heavier, more textural white wines in the coming cooler Autumn and winter months. It’s that time of year when our wine choices can be as varied as the days themselves. So, what wines do you “pair with the season”? After doing some research, the general consensus is Pinot Noir, Merlot, Shiraz, Sangiovese and Cabernet blends are seasonal favourites amongst the reds and Viognier, Chardonnay and Semillon amongst the whites. In general, full-bodied whites and light- to medium-bodied reds are the perfect complement to the cooler weather and Autumn harvest foods. Here are a few Autumnal wine picks with food pairings, to stock your cellar this colourful season. The cooler weather may be here, but that doesn’t mean you need to stop sipping on a glass of your favourite Rosé. As a fantastic food wine, the versatility of Rosé is its standout feature as it can be paired with a wide variety of foods and flavours and handles spices and heat very well – try with Indian and Midden Eastern dishes. Those lighter-style reds you’ve been enjoying all summer are still an optimal choice for the cooler moments of Autumn, although now is the time to enjoy your Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Cabernet blends and medium bodied Shiraz at room temperature. Pinot Noir has become very popular in Australia as an alternative to some of our famously big bold reds. Traditionally Australian Pinot Noir is lighter in colour, with a perfumed nose and hints of cherry, raspberry and plum flavours balanced by smooth tannins. It’s a particularly flavoursome wine and ideal with roasted meats, salmon and tuna dishes. The exciting Italian variety – Sangiovese, is becoming increasingly popular in its adopted home of Australia where the variety is known for being adaptable to many types of vineyard soils and has proved suitable for cultivation across many Australian wine regions. Like all Italian

yhv 32 | MAY 2019

wines Sangiovese demands food and is well-matched for the flavours of chicken, grilled red meat, lamb, slow roasted pork, pastas, stews or well-aged cheeses. The typical young Hunter Valley Shiraz is a medium bodied wine showing red and dark berries, spices and a great deal of tannin. With age, the wines become far more complex, full-bodied, yet smooth and richly flavoured with some earthy tones. The bold flavours give Shiraz the reputation as a very food-friendly wine. Try it with veal dishes, lamb, steak (especially peppery steaks), kangaroo, roast duck, Indian and Middles Eastern dishes. With the cooler months, those crisp and fresh whites we have been savouring the past few months, now also tend to make way for heavier, more textural white wines. Most Chardonnay lovers will drink Chardonnay regardless of the season, but it is the perfect choice for Autumn. The style that has emerged today is all about letting the fruit take centre stage with other elements such as oak taking a supportive role. A medium-bodied style is a perfect match for Autumn’s classic characteristics. Enjoy with pies, buttery sauces and decadent shellfish, risotto, pasta or chicken dishes such as butter chicken curry. Viognier is another compelling white, with flavours that can include tangerine, peach, mango, honeysuckle and even roses. Enjoy viognier with exotic dishes such as orange chicken, turkey with cranberry chutney, or any type of curry with a citrus garnish. Semillon is proof that Autumn is not just about red wines. This Bordeaux-borne grape is often blended with Sauvignon Blanc, giving an otherwise lush, mouth-filling wine a welcome hint of zippiness to make an excellent white pour for those Autumn-inspired dishes. Sparkling Wines can be enjoyed at any time of year – not just for celebrations. Prosecco is a fine friend for Autumn-centric starters, including frittatas, pies and quiches. Hopefully, these give you an idea of what to replace in your cellar once the leaves start dropping. If you have a cellar full of summer wines, then it’s time to give them a final send-off and start drinking!

STEP BACK IN TIME South Maitland Railway WORDS Michelle Meehan

There’s no question coal was the driving force behind the growth of the Hunter Valley. But despite the popularity of the annual Steamfest event, which attracts tens of thousands of steam locomotive lovers to Maitland each April, many people don’t realise the crucial role the railways played in the development of the region. Late in the 19th century, Government geologist T.W.Edgeworth David discovered a vast coal reserve in the area south-west of Maitland. A syndicate of Maitland businessmen were the first people to capitalise on the rich natural resource, forming the East Greta Coal Mining Company in 1891 and opening the East Greta Colliery in an area near the suburb now known as Gillieston Heights.

But it wasn’t until the company built a private railway line in 1893 to facilitate a connection between their mine and the Great Northern Railway, which was owned by the Government, that the potential of Australia’s newest coalfield began to be realised. The line initially ran between East Greta Junction (now known as Telarah) and the nearby East Greta Colliery, but by 1904 it had been extended further south to Cessnock, with the towns of Kurri Kurri, Weston, Abermain, Neath and Aberdare quickly emerging to service a slew of new coal mines. Each new section of the railway line was built by the mining companies using it to transport their coal, however ownership of the entire line was combined in 1918 when Hebburn Ltd and the East Greta Coal Mining Company merged to form a new company, known as the South Maitland Railways Ltd (SMR).

During the 1920s, around 45 per cent of all coal produced in NSW travelled along the SMR lines before being distributed for local consumption or delivered to the Port of Newcastle, where it was shipped overseas. With its headquarters at East Greta Junction, where fully equipped workshops were built to maintain, repair and rebuild the locomotives used on the line, SMR became the most intensively operated private railway in Australia. Aside from coal haulage, SMR also operated passenger services for almost 40 years, with the first service travelling between East Greta Junction and Stanford Merthyr in June 1902. The last passenger train ran on the SMR lines in May 1972, with the service having been variously operated by SMR and the NSW Government’s Department of Railways. While SMR eventually became synonymous with steam-driven engines, the railway line to East Greta was initially worked by gravitation and horse traction. The first small steam locomotives were introduced in 1895, but as the amount of coal being transported along the line grew, more powerful steam engines were soon required. Purpose-built steam tank locomotives, known as the ’10 Class’ engines, were manufactured in England and first arrived in Maitland during December 1911, with a total of 14 units delivered by 1926. The private railway network continued to operate steam locomotives until June 1983, when they were replaced with dieselelectric locomotives. By the time steam was discontinued, each locomotive had travelled between 1.6 and 2 million kilometres. SMR’s switch to the more modern locomotives attracted much interest, as at the time it was the last operating steam haulage service in Australia. In a bid to celebrate the Hunter’s long-running use of steam engines and the important role they played in the development of the region, the National Trust of Australia, The State Rail Authority and the Heritage Office organised the inaugural Steamfest event, which ran as

the grand finale to Heritage Week in 1986. Now one of the biggest events on the local calendar, the two-day Hunter Valley Steamfest attracts around 50,000 to Maitland each year. While South Maitland Railways continues to operate a flourishing open access private railway network, the SMR steam locomotive workshop at East Greta Junction is now protected by a Permanent Conservation Order under the NSW Heritage Act. The Maitland Rail Museum has been established at the site to highlight the role SMR played in helping to establish Maitland and Cessnock as one of the world’s most important coal producing areas of the mid-20th century. The museum includes interpretive displays, equipment, tools and other artefacts used by the railway, with entry via prior arrangement.
