FROM THE EDITORS You know Christmas is almost upon us when Hunter Valley Gardens start stringing up the lights and as we go to print, the team at Hunter Valley Gardens are working overtime to present this year’s Christmas Lights Spectacular! Now in its 10th year, the switch will be flicked on Friday, November 4th for a treat that will run right through to Australia Day in January. An outdoor visual treat of a different kind is now in full swing – it’s the Hunter Valley’s largest sculpture festival - Sculpture in the Vineyards. This remarkable exhibition transforms the beautiful Wollombi Valley into a series of sculpture parks with large scale and site specific works of art on view and some tantalising wines to taste along the way. In all our time in the Valley, I don’t think we’ve ever seen a concert lineup quite like the 2016 – 2017 season. From Culture Club to Barry Gibb, Springsteen to Simple Minds, Rodriguez to B-52s and a huge line up of Australian favourites in between – there truly is something for everyone on offer. Get out your diaries, highlight the date and start booking those tickets – this is a season to be remembered forever! Talking of Summer – is there anything more refreshing than cracking open a

cold brew under the summer sun? The Hunter “Ale Trail” is full of tantalising beers and providing visitors and locals with a tasting experience that is a tribute to the master-brewers amongst us. In this issue, we look at 6 of our favourite summer ales. The Hunter Valley is not short on new ideas and innovation, and this is evident in the growing breed of young, talented winemakers who are making their mark in the area. This month we speak to some these innovative trendsetters to find out how they came to be winemakers. We also explore the delicate, aromatic delights of Gewurztraminer. While this is not a common variety in the Hunter Valley, it’s well worth the effort to explore wine country in search of a bottle.

MUSIC

Culture Club play at Hope Estate on December 10th!

Rockin' THE VALLEY BY QUENTIN VON ESSEN

When it comes to creating the perfect Hunter Valley experience, fine wine, delicious food and great music continue to be a winning blend. Each year the region dines out on its diverse calendar of events, but when it comes to November the Hunter seems to crank things up a notch with a series of shows that are larger, louder, longer and more luxuriant than those that have gone before. Celebrating everything from the region’s world-renowned food and wine to its reputation as a place that knows how to throw a party, the Hunter’s flourishing concert line-up is a major drawcard for visitors from far and wide – and a must for those much closer to home. The ever popular a day on the green series will kick off the concert season this month when indie rock acts You Am I, Something For Kate and Spiderbait perform at Bimbadgen Estate on November 5. The triple headliners share a revered place in Australian rock culture courtesy of a collection of albums that sound as good now as when they made it to the top of the charts, won ARIA awards and dominated radio airwaves in the 1990’s. They will be joined by Perth’s hard rocking four-piece Jebediah and funloving Melbourne punk rock band The Meanies for a true showcase of some of the best alternative acts Australia has produced. But if indie rock isn’t your thing a day on the green has got you covered again just two weeks later, when legendary singer-songwriter Rodriguez lets loose at Bimbadgen Estate on Saturday, November 19. He will be joined at the vineyard performance by Australian music luminaries Xavier Rudd, Russell Morris, Archie Roach and Mark Wilkinson. It will be the first time Rodriguez has performed in the Hunter in more than two decades, with his last stop in the region way back in 1981 with a show at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre. The legendary self-taught guitarist is revered worldwide for albums such as Cold Fact and Coming From Reality, with his unique blend of social politics and emotional insights evident in songs like Sugar Man, I Wonder and Cause.

thb 8 | NOVEMBER 2016

Hope Estate will become a musical mecca for fans of classic Oz rock on November 26 when the Broke Road venue hosts Hope Rocks and its all-star line-up of some of the best Australia rock acts of the last 30 years including Baby Animals, The Screaming Jets, Ian Moss, Richard Clapton, The Superjesus, Dragon and Choir Boys. A day on the green will be back in the Hunter on December 3, with altrock pioneers Garbage and Australia’s own multi-platinum chart toppers The Temper Trap coming together at Bimbadgen Estate with special guests The Preatures, Tash Sultana and Adalita. It has been three years since Garbage last toured Australia, with the Hunter show the second-last gig on their eight-leg tour celebrating the band’s highly acclaimed sixth studio album, Strange Little Birds, which was released earlier this year. Music fans who like their tunes with a little more synthesiser thrown in should head to Hope Estate on December 10 to check out the kings of kitsch in action – Culture Club. Hot off the back of sold out shows and rave reviews across the USA and Australia, the 80's icons are returning to our shores for a string of dates. They will be supported at the Hunter performance by the pure pop perfection of 1927, Pseudo Echo, Kids in The Kitchen, Wa Wa Nee and Real Life. And the dance down memory lane will continue into 2017 when the magnificent Simple Minds return to the Hunter Valley on February 11 for one of summer’s more captivating tours. Australia was the first country in the world to embrace the Simple Minds sound, delivering the band its first hit single (Love Song) and first goldselling album (New Gold Dream). The band’s success has continued since those early days, with countless chart-toppers that include Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive and Kicking, Promised You A Miracle, Glittering Prize and Waterfront, as well as eight Top 20 albums and countless hugely successful concert tours. Simple Minds will team up with fellow retro stars The B-52's for a huge a day on the green concert at Bimbadgen Estate that’s sure to keep the audience on their feet right until the end. They will also be joined by two of the 80's most innovative and eclectic bands, Models and Machinations, both of whom developed

a huge cult following at dance clubs across Australia with their catchy synthpop tunes. The hits will keep on coming in the vineyards the following day when James Taylor and His All Star Band take to the stage at Hope Estate on February 12.

Featuring the legendary Icehouse, James Reyne, Daryl Braithwaite, Shannon Noll, Dragon and Pseudo Echo, the festival is sure to rock the socks off Hunter music fans keen for one last taste of that summer music season. “We have been proud to present some legendary artists on the lineups for the Red Hot Summer Tour over the years,” promoter Duane McDonald said.

With a career spanning nearly 50 years since he first signed to The Beatles’ Apple Records in 1968, Taylor’s music embodies the art of song writing in its most personal and universal forms, while his warm baritone “This year we are thrilled to bring the mighty Icehouse to the line-up for is among the most recognised voices in popular music. the very first time, as well as welcoming back some artists who have made the festival unforgettable over the years. The 2017 tour will rock His songs have had a profound influence on both songwriters and music the socks off music fans.” lovers from all generations and across all walks of life, with hits including Fire and Rain, Country Road, Something in the Way She Moves, Sweet And as the days turn cooler and the leaves begin to fall, one of the Baby James, Carolina In My Mind and many more. world’s biggest artists will drop in to Hope Estate to cap off the Hunter outdoor concert season on a more mellow note. And Australian fans of the five-time Grammy Award winner have been waiting a long time for the chance to see him perform in person, with The sweet tones and spine-tingling falsetto of Bee Gees founder Barry this tour the US singer-songwriter’s first in seven years. He will be joined Gibb will float through the autumn air when his In the Now tour drops in by special guests Bernard Fanning and Kasey Chambers. on April 8. It’s been a far shorter time between drinks for Hunter fans of Bruce Springsteen, with “The Boss” performing a sold-out run of shows on our shores in 2014. But his return with the E Street Band will be no less anticipated as Springsteen embarks on one of his biggest Australian tours to date early next year. The run of gigs will include his return to Hope Estate on February 18, with special guests including perennial Aussie favourite Diesel and energetic rockers Jet, who have re-formed especially for this tour. A week later, the grounds of Hope Estate will be rocking once again when American glam rock singer-songwriter Suzi Quatro brings her Leather Forever Encore Tour to the Hunter Valley on February 25.

Showcasing a generous selection of the global hits that continue to resonate with local audiences to this day alongside a large serving of songs from his new solo album In The Now, Gibb is sure to serve up a live set that will satisfy even the most ardent fan. The show will feature the same outstanding band that impressed audiences during the Mythology Tour in 2013, including Gibb’s son Stephen on guitar. All in all it is sure to be a concert season not be missed, so make sure you mark your diaries and come celebrate the feast of wine, food and music on offer in Australia’s oldest and most well established wine region.

With a career spanning more than half a century and record sales topping 50 million units, it’s a case of “one more time” around for the Queen of Rock as she returns for her 31st national tour. “Well, what can I say, eh! Australia. You’re in my bones, you’re in my blood, I was born to entertain, I had to come back, I missed you too much,” she said. Joining Quatro on stage will be Andy Scott from The Sweet (guitar and vocals) and Don Powell from Slade (drums), while an eight-piece band will help her belt out all her hits during the second half of what is sure to be a truly amazing show. And while summer may officially come to an end on February 28, music fans will be able to hang on to the season for a little longer with the Red Hot Summer Tour to explode onto the lawns of Roche Estate on March 25.

SABOR TEA ROOM Serving up High Tea in the Hunter Valley Fernando and Renata Antao are the couple behind popular Hunter Valley sweet spot – Sabor in the Hunter Dessert Bar on Broke Road in Pokolbin and they are now all set to launch their latest and equally exciting venture - Sabor Tea Room on Wilderness Road in Lovedale. They are also the creators of Casa de Sabor, the award-winning Portuguese Mousse which comes from an old Antao family recipe - one which Fernando’s grandmother started making over 70 years ago and is still made using the same method and ingredients. After opening the original Hunter Valley dessert bar in Lovedale four years ago, the popularity and demand for their awesome desserts resulted in Fernando and Renata having to open a second dessert bar at the beautiful Lambloch Estate on Broke Road in Pokolbin. Now Fernando and Renata have decided to transform the original Lovedale venue into a bright and airy tea room.

Sabor Tea Room opens this November - serving high tea over two sessions each Saturday and Sunday, complete with a glass of sparkling wine on arrival and a tiered assortment of savouries and a specially made range of desserts served with tea and coffee. The longstanding tradition of high tea is synonymous with the enjoyment of the finer things in life, and has become a favoured way to celebrate special occasions in a refined environment with great company. The exquisite range of savouries and desserts will delight the most ardent high tea lovers, served as per tradition on tiered platters and elegant vintage crockery, with some pieces being almost 100 years old. The delightful treats that will be served include croissants, brioche, volau-vents and scones as well as a specially made selection of Sabor cakes and desserts – making for the perfect high tea experience, accompanied by a glass of Botrytis Semillon or Liqueur Shiraz dessert wine. Think high tea is just for the adults? The kids menu at Sabor Tea Room ensures the kids do not miss out on the experience, serving up kiddie versions of the desserts and savouries.

“After years of numerous requests to serve high tea, we decided to branch After an arduous day of wine tasting, Sabor Tea Room can be a sweet out and open a tea room specialising in high tea - but in the traditional little side step for those who love to indulge in decadent cakes and way for the purpose of providing our customers with an unforgettable pastries. high tea experience with friends or family,” says Fernando. DRINK

FLAVOURED WITH OPPORTUNITY This summer we urge you to follow your impulses, and (if you have not done so already) step away from the mass-marketed factory made beers and turn to craft beers – those handcrafted, flavoursome brews that are capturing beer lover’s hearts, tastebuds and wallets all over the world. Despite the decline in the popularity of beer drinking in Australia, the craft beer market is flourishing. Changing consumer tastes, and the shift from quantity to quality have seen the craft beer movement thrive. Today, drinking beer is about drinking for flavour and drinking local. So who are these breweries that are bucking the beer industry trend all over the world? Craft breweries are mostly small businesses, owned and operated by families or partnerships made up of people who are passionate about making beer that they are proud to put their names to.

Summon the Sun

with Summer Ales! Some things just belong together – thunder and lightning, bacon and eggs, Laverne and Shirley, Bert and Ernie, cookies and cream, Sonny and Cher (no, not really) – but I am sure you get my point. But perhaps no pair is as perfect as beer and summer. If you are a regular practitioner of the Australian ritual of cracking open a cold brew under the summer sun, you understand. Summer is a thirsty season, one for which beer is tailor-made. Delicious and refreshing, beer is a great way to unwind after a long, hot day. From malty, medium bodied amber ales, hop flavoured pale ales and dark fruity porters to golden pilseners and brisk lagers - the flavour possibilities are endless.

AWARD WINNING VENUE

In the Hunter Valley, those breweries making up the “Hunter Ale Trail” are no different and are usually run on a small scale, using traditional ingredients and a hands-on approach. As the first microbrewery in the region, the Hunter Beer Company has been brewing a unique range of hand crafted beers onsite at their premises in Nulkaba for the past 11 years. Whether it be their range of award winning regular beers such as the American style Pale Ale, the darker German styled Bock, the full strength Lager, the light flavoured Belgian Witbier and the flagship beer the Hunter Kolsch, these beers all have taste and very large personalities. They also make a number of seasonal beers that include a Chocolate Porter and the annual Christmas Cheer. “What you see in craft beer is a huge amount of personality and character,” says Keith Grice, Head Brewer at Hunter Beer. Co. “We’re not trying to appeal to a mass market, instead we are trying new things – new tastes, flavours, aromas and new ingredients. This shows through in the beer… and that’s why people are loving it."

Located at the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley is the Lovedale Brewery, where a range of beers from lagers to rich oatmeal porters as well as a rotation of seasonal beers are brewed. Heading the list of favourites is the Lovedale Lager – a traditional Munich style lager combining three types of German hops to create a smooth citrus aroma with a slightly toasted malt backbone.

Ginger & Lime - Hunter Beer Co. The latest release from Hunter Beer Co. This beer provides a sensational flavour combination with the spritzy lime and spicy ginger combining in beer form to make a thirst quenching and flavoursome ale. The beer has great appeal for the first-time beer drinker to the more experienced connoisseur looking for a light refreshing beverage to enjoy in the warm weather.

Joining this crafty bunch of brewers and located on Broke Road is Hope Brewhouse with about 10 different beers on tap at any given time – from the mid strength Pokolbin Blonde and the classic summer afternoon cleansers such as the Munich Lager to the more substantial Pale Ale. Also available is the Golden Ale, the India Red Ale, the Barrel Fermented ESB and the Hunter Harvest Imperial IPA.

Munich Lager - Hope Brewhouse (Pictured) From Hope Brewhouse comes this thirst quenching pale German lager. A clear, light golden beer with a nice light malt flavour rounded out by firm, but not overpowering bitterness. This is a great everyday beer, one for cricket-watching and rewarding yourself after you have finally mowed that lawn.

At Hunter Resort on Hermitage Road, you will find the Matilda Bay Brewhouse where beer lovers can experience unique beer tasting paddles with accompanying tasting notes for each of the brews on tap - including the famous Alcoholic Ginger Beer, Alpha Ale, Bohemian Pilsner, Dogbolter Black Ale, Beez Neez, Fat Yak and Redback, as well as a number of regular ‘special’ brews. They say one swallow doesn’t make a summer, but your first swig of these crisp ales might just prove otherwise…

XPA – Hope Brewhouse A bold aromatic and fruity American Pale Ale, with dominant tropical fruit, citrus, toffee and malt flavours and aromas – rounded off with a solid bitterness that is typical to the style. This is a wonderful summer ale.

Golden Ale – Hope Brewhouse The name says it all. When lager isn’t quite enough, this Golden Ale is the next step up the flavour ladder. A burnt orange coloured, medium bodied ale with balanced malt and hop profile, this Witbier Evolution - Hunter Beer Co. Belgian brewers have been brewing beer has a light malt body with stone farmhouse ales for over 500 years and during that time they have fruit and citrus hop characters. This been adding fruit and spices to their brews. The Hunter Beer Co. has combined with the restrained bitterness embraced that tradition with their Witbier Evolution. While the brewers make it a very approachable beer do their best to use local and seasonally available ingredients, every and an ideal stepping stone into the now and again you will find a batch with a few more exotic ingredients “hoppier” side of the craft beer world. added. The changing flavours over summer will include grapefruit, limes, oranges, pepper, cardamom, lemon myrtle and coriander, so be prepared for something a little different. Summer Pale - Hunter Beer Co. Made for summer this beer from the Hunter Beer Co. looks, smells and tastes the part. It pours with a pale yellow colour, has an aroma of mango and pineapple and has a gently prickly grapefruit flavoured mouthfeel. At 4% alcohol you can responsibly enjoy more than one of these thirst quenching ales.

Gwyneth Olsen of Briar Ridge

MEET THE MAKERS

Darren Scott of RidgeView

A Thirst for Quality BY QUENTIN VON ESSEN

The Hunter Valley vineyards are not short on new ideas or innovation. This month we meet a few of the Hunter’s most talented and innovative winemakers. For well over 100 years, the Hunter Valley has been recognised internationally for the quality and distinct regional characteristics of its premium wines as well as the superb skills of the winemakers creating them. The region has been home to countless legends of the industry that include Karl Stockhausen, Hans Mollenhauer and Maurice O’Shea - the man credited as being the father of Australian table wine. There are also those winemakers whose enduring legacies helped shape the reputation of the region - Len Evans, Max Lake and the late Murray Tyrrell, and those who continue to make their mark on the industry today such as Ian Scarborough, Jay Tulloch, John Tulloch, Chris Barnes, Phil Ryan, Brian McGuigan, Faye McGuigan, Kevin Sobels and Bruce Tyrrell.

A year later she took on the additional role of General Manager and in October 2015 was appointed Head Winemaker for Davis Premium Vineyards and Pepper Tree Wines, overseeing winemaking for Briar Ridge, Tallavera Grove and Carillion Vineyard in Orange. But it’s not just a long list of promotions that has defined Gwyneth’s impressive winemaking career so far. In the past two years alone her wines have won six trophies and gold medals while Gwyneth herself has been showered with awards and accolades including the Rising Star of the Year at the 2015 Hunter Valley Legends Awards and the 2014 Gourmet Traveller WINE Young Winemaker Medal. She was accepted as a Scholar in 2015 at the most exclusive wine school in the world - the Len Evans Tutorial – while in 2012 she was crowned Dux of the Australian Wine Research Institute, Advanced Wine Assessment Course after being described as an ‘individual with exceptional judging skill.’ She now judges at six wine shows throughout Australia, including three National Wine Shows – Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne. Peter Lane, on the other hand, is often described as the quiet achiever. Chief Winemaker for Wynwood Estate and Capercaillie Wines, Peter has more than 20 years of experience in the Hunter wine industry and has worked with some of the leading winemakers in the region including Lindeman’s, Tyrrell’s and McWilliams. Unlike Gwyneth, Peter knew at a young age he wanted to become a winemaker and after completing a Bachelor of Applied Science and Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science) worked as a trainee chemist for Mount Pleasant, where he spent six years before moving on to Southcorp where he was introduced to different varieties and styles of winemaking.

But following in the footsteps of these giants is a growing list of Peter then returned to the more traditional, family-owned setting of innovative and highly talented winemakers who are injecting new life and flavours into the market and helping shape the future of the industry Tyrell’s after they approached him in 2003 to join the fold as an assistant winemaker. in the Hunter Valley. Perhaps one of the most respected names in the Australian wine scene at the moment is Gwyneth Olsen, Head Winemaker at Briar Ridge Vineyard. Since joining the Mount View vineyard three years ago, Gwyneth has become known as one of the most talented winemakers in Australia today. But she did not originally set out to craft fine wines, having originally locked her sights on a career in biochemistry. Thankfully for Hunter wine connoisseurs, Gwyneth eventually ended up at Roseworthy University in Adelaide studying Oenology before heading off to work on three French vintages. Stints at vineyards in New Zealand and the Hunter Valley followed before she accepted the position of Chief Winemaker at Briar Ridge in 2013.

His association with the rich traditions of the Hunter wine industry continued in 2011 when he started making wines for the highly respected Capercaillie Wine Co. in Lovedale, as well as Wynwood Estate, which was once part of the old Saxonvale Wines property on Oakey Creek Road in Pokolbin. The move presented Peter with the opportunity to work on some of oldest vineyards in the Hunter. Dentist-turned-winemaker Darren Scott earned his reputation after creating an entirely new Hunter wine label on a 40-hectare property in Pokolbin. Together with his wife Tracey, Darren established RidgeView from scratch in 2000. With a background in science, winemaking seemed to come naturally, although when the time came to begin producing his first

vintage Darren sought the guidance of Gary MacLean, an established local winemaker who has played an integral role in the vineyard, having been awarded more than 585 medals and 10 trophies since 2007 for wines made under his guidance. Mark Woods is another contract winemaker adding his mark to the RidgeView label. Currently in charge of producing RidgeView’s “Impressions” and “Generations” range of wines, which includes Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay, Mark has continued his award-winning ways in 2016, with the 2015 “Impressions” Chardonnay picking up gold medals at this year’s Sydney Royal Wine Show, Hunter Valley Wine Show and NSW Small Winemakers Show. But RidgeView isn’t the only Hunter wine label being run by someone who began their career in a completely different field. Tamburlaine Wines Managing Director and Chief Winemaker Mark Davidson began his working life involved in Community Support Programs and then as a HR trainer and psychologist for the Federal Government. But his love of growing things and keen interest in wine eventually won out, with Mark studying viticulture and wine science at Riverina College in NSW (now Charles Sturt University). In 1985 when the “Tamburlaine” wine estate at Pokolbin came onto the market, Mark and a small group of investors snapped up the site and set about expanding it into one of biggest certified organic wineries in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, the 51-year-old winery is Australia’s largest producer of labelled organic wine, based on 100 per cent organic and biodynamic farming and is also the first certified carbon neutral winery in the country. With a focus on producing high quality wines with cutting edge and environmentally sound production techniques, Tamburlaine turns out more than 80,000 cases a year. A long-standing favourite with customers and wine critics, it has been awarded a red five-star rating in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. Equally passionate about his work as a winemaker in the Hunter is the much respected Jeff Byrne, who developed his prowess under the expert tutelage of the late Len Evans. Originally from Nova Scotia, Canada, Jeff moved to the Hunter Valley in 2000, where he decided to embrace a career in the wine industry, first as a cellar hand before later becoming an assistant winemaker at Tower Estate under the personal mentorship of the legendary Len Evans. After graduating with a Wine Science degree in 2007, Jeff scored his first senior winemaking role a year later when the Agnew family re-commenced winemaking at the historic Audrey Wilkinson Vineyard for the first time in more than 50 years.

thb 18 | NOVEMBER 2016

Jeff Byrne of Agnew Wines

In 2009 Jeff was selected to attend the prestigious Len Evans Tutorial and in 2011 was awarded the Hunter Valley Wine Industry Association Rising Star award. In 2012 he was promoted to Chief Winemaker for Agnew Wines, overseeing the Audrey Wilkinson, Cockfighter’s Ghost and Pooles Rock labels. Jeff now also makes wines for the recently launched Eagles Rest Wines on Oakey Creek Road. Of course you don’t need a huge expanse of vineyard at your fingertips to make a name for yourself in the Hunter, as Damien Stevens and Jodie Belleville have shown. The couple are one half of the boutique Hart & Hunter venture, which they formed in partnership with Daniel and Elle Hart. Their vision was to source the highest quality fruit from specially selected vineyards in Pokolbin, which consistently turn out wines that are truly indicative of their terroir. With a particular focus on varieties such as Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay, Damien and Jodie are also among the few winemakers in the Hunter producing the highly popular Fiano and Chenin Blanc varieties. In 2010 the winemaking couple took the Hunter Valley Wine Show by storm when, in competition against some of the Hunter’s top Semillon producers, their 2010 Single Vineyard Semillon took out the MarshallFlannery Trophy for the best current vintage Semillon as well as the H.J. Lindeman Trophy for the best current vintage dry white of the show. Damien and Jodie’s passion to find a suitable location to produce and promote their wines was realised in 2014 with the opening of their Hart & Hunter winery and cellar door on Deasys Road in Pokolbin. More success followed in 2015 at the Hunter Valley Boutique Winemakers Show, with Hart and Hunter taking home three trophies for their 2014 Chardonnay, 2015 Oakey Creek Single Vineyard Series Semillon and the 2014 Ablington Vineyard Shiraz. They cemented their reputation outside of the region with three gold medals for the 2015 Oakey Creek Semillon, the 2015 The Remparts Semillon and the 2015 Dr B’s Fiano at the 2015 Pier One Sydney Harbour NSW Wine Awards, ensuring there is a bright future for their handpicked, hand crafted Hunter Valley wines. Damien and Jodie now also make wine for one the latest and also most exciting wine labels in the region – Dark Horse Vineyard in Lovedale.

FOOD 5 WAYS

Avocado Vego Delight at The Deck Café.

Holy

GUACAMOLE! BY CAITLIN ROSSER

Avocado is a smashing addition to any meal – whether that be on toast with eggs, in a salad, or even in a healthy chocolate mousse! As one of the most well-loved parts of any meal, I will be the first to admit that I have an avocado obsession, with a special place in my heart for guacamole! This beloved green fruit has been found to have existed as far back as 291 BC, grown in the highlands of Central America and the lowlands of Columbia. Derived from the Latin American Nahuatl word "ahuacatl", which cheekily refers to a region of the human male anatomy, the avocado had a reputation as an aphrodisiac for the Aztecs. Today's pronunciation of the word, the more G-rated term "avocado", was given by a Sir Henry Sloane in 1669. Introduced in Europe after Mexico and Peru were invaded by the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, the avocado arrived on Australian shores in 1840, with the seeds of avocados first planted at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney. Due to the recent 'hipster movement' that has spread throughout the Australian food scene, demand for avocado has skyrocketed, with the exotic fruit now dominating our menus, household shopping lists, as well as the writings of dedicated blogs and websites. According to John Tyas from Avocados Australia (published by ABC Landline) our consumption of avocados has doubled over the last 10 years, with a typical Australian eating up to 3.2 kilograms of avocado a year. We are now officially the fourth-biggest avocado eaters in the world! This statistic is hardly surprising as many of us avocado lovers will remember, there was devastation in January this year due to "the great avocado shortage of 2016", resulting in the limited supply of the superfood becoming hot property! The popularity of avocadoes is no doubt because of their great taste, but also due to the stack of health benefits they provide. In addition to its rich and creamy texture, the fruit that tastes like a vegetable has an impressive range of nutrients that pack a punch. Made up of 75% water, they are a natural source of vitamins, antioxidants and healthy fats.

According to the Avocados Australia website (www.avocado.org.au), the introduction of avocado as part of a healthy diet has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, with a quarter of the fruit (or a 50g serving) containing only 6g of fat. Avocado is rich in dietary fibre, low in sugar and sodium, a great source of potassium and folate, and abundant with mono and polyunsaturated fats, making it a healthy substitute for butter or cream. As the secret beauty weapon for celebrities' shiny hair and clear skin, it is also a source of vitamin C and E. Vitamin C is vital for the skin and the building of collagen, with a quarter of an avocado containing 10mg of the vitamin (making up 25% of an adult's recommended dietary intake), as well as 1mg of vitamin E. If you're looking for a bite to eat to satisfy your avocado craving, here's our pick of local restaurants with menu options that are sure to hit the spot: • Avocado Vego Delight at The Deck Café – Grilled sourdough, smashed avocado, roasted mushrooms, vine ripened tomato, grilled haloumi and herb oil. • Restaurant Cuvee at Peterson House – Corn Fritters with salmon drizzled with balsamic topped with avocado salsa and crème fraiche. • Gourmet Chicken Pizza at Harrigan's Irish Pub – BBQ chicken, red onion, avocado, mozzarella and sour cream. • Bistro Artisan at Red Door Collective – Whole Market Fish with avocado salsa and roasted potato. • Prosciutto & Quail Egg Salad at Two Fat Blokes – A mix of watercress, spinach and rocket, tossed with onion dressing and topped with red radish prosciutto, avocado and quail eggs.

Gewürztraminer

VARIETY

It may not be a household name, but Gewürztraminer is a wine that once-tasted, isn’t easily forgotten. Gewürztraminer is the signature variety of Alsace in North-eastern France - known for producing full bodied and velvety in the mouth wines with beautifully distinctive aromas of rose petal and lychee, but is also widely planted in other wine regions in France and many other countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe. While the French Alsace region is most famous for this grape, the history of Gewürztraminer began in the German-speaking Tyrolean Alps of Italy. Gewürztraminer has the dubious dual distinction of being the easiest grape variety to recognise but the most difficult to spell and was first introduced to Australia in 1832 but has since been reintroduced by more recent plantings. Once described as the “Chardonnay of the 1970's,” Gewürztraminer is a variety that is not widely grown in Australia as it generally thrives in a cooler climate. However, some producers in the Hunter Valley such as Capercaillie, Briar Ridge, Ernest Hill and Peterson Wines to name a few, are known to produce some outstanding examples of this variety. These wines range from the crisp, fruity and dry style to the lavish, honeyed sweet styles or late harvest wines. In Australia this variety is also known as Traminer, especially in the warmer regions where it is most commonly used as a blending companion for Riesling. It is a very delicate grape that is not generally blended with anything else except Riesling (some readers may well recall the Rosemount 'Traminer Riesling' of the 1980's). Some excellent examples of Traminer can be found at RidgeView Wines and Kevin Sobels Wines. While it may be that Gewürztraminer is one of the most pungent wine varietals, easy to recognise by its heady, aromatic scent, its versatility and high natural sugar content means it can be made into a wine with a bonedry finish through to semi-sweet or sweet wine styles. The wines are highly perfumed and quite full-bodied, more so than other white wines. The bouquet is intense and complex, offering an explosion of exotic fruits such as lychee, passion fruit, pineapple and mango characters with rose petal, gardenia, honeysuckle and even spicy (gingerbread, peppermint, cloves and pepper) aromas. In fact, the name Gewürztraminer literally translates as “spicy Traminer”. Often on the floral side and somewhat effervescent, this wine can be a refreshing alternative to your go to wine – especially when you are looking for something that will go with food. Having said that, when it comes to food, its aromatic flavours means that Gewürztraminer pairs beautifully with smoked food, like speck and also fatty dishes like pork or ripe cheeses, as well as with the exotic spices of Moroccan, Indian, and Far Eastern cuisines such as Thai red duck curry. Very sweet Gewürztraminers are ideal with desserts, cheesecake and fruit tarts.

Capercaillie Wines 2016 Gewürztraminer Located in Lovedale, Capercaillie's ambition is to remain a small winery which is focused entirely upon the creation of premium quality wines. To enhance the range of individual Hunter Valley Wines they select parcels of grapes from other proven regions of Australia, creating exciting multi-area blends which highlight climatic and varietal differences. Known for producing a wonderful examples of Gewürztraminer wines, the 2016 vintage has produced a wine with lifted musk and floral notes and a palate that is balanced with natural grape acidity and a moderate amount of residual sugar. Perfectly matched with spicy Asian dishes, Indian curries and exotic spiced foods.

Briar Ridge 2014 Late Harvest Gewürztraminer Briar Ridge Vineyard is an iconic 5 star winery nestled in the Mount View region of the Hunter Valley producing a diverse range of award winning wines. With fruit picked based on perfect flavour ripeness comes this rich and opulent late picked Gewürztraminer dessert wine. Perfumed rose petal and ginger spice nuances linger on the nose, with the finely balanced palate displaying Turkish delight and lychee notes – finishing with subtle bush honey notes.
