FROM THE EDITORS Spring has sprung in the Hunter, and so has Festival season! The long weekend at the end of this month (technically the October Long Weekend) will see a carnival atmosphere descend on the Hunter with three of four major festivals taking place over the same weekend. The Hunter Valley Balloon Fiesta is a festival of the skies – literally! Dozens of exotically colourful hot air balloons will take to the air over the course of the 4-day festival, but the festivities won't end there – the first ever Hunter Valley Night Glow Festival will take centre stage from sunset. The annual Wollombi Music Festival is back with a venue change. In a town known for its diverse culture and creativity, this festival is set to reflect the intrinsic character of Wollombi with a night of fantastic music, celebration, community and great vibes. Dashville Skyline will also return for its 3rd instalment. A celebration of alternative country music and culture, this 3-day camping festival will host over 30 live performances, mouth watering American-inspired food and drinks, boutique market stalls, an

animal petting zoo and much more. Something for everyone really! All of these events will take place over the long weekend, but earlier this month the scenic Broke Fordwich region will play host to the annual Broke Village Fair and Vintage Car Display. The event started over three decades ago with a couple of locals comparing cars at the local store but now boasts over 60 market stalls, wine and food tastings, amusement rides, laser tag and course a vast array of vintage and classic cars, motorbikes, trucks tractors and vintage farm machinery. While it may seem that we have a festival focus in this months issue, there’s plenty more between our pages. We talk to a few new team members at Nanna Kerr's Kitchen, discover the dinosaur and dragon invasion at Hunter Valley Gardens during the school holidays, learn what a Somellier does, pair beer with food, take a taste of Chambourcin and find out all the results at the Hunter Valley Wine Show. Be sure to catch up on a bit of R&R this month too – after all – concert season is just around the corner. Enjoy!

Spring

Seasonal Lunch

One of the country’s most highly respected young chefs, will return to the Hunter this month to weave his culinary magic for guests in a rare cooking demonstration at this year’s Hunter Culinary Association Spring Seasonal Lunch. Widely known for his unique and groundbreaking approach to seafood, Josh Niland, whose Paddington restaurant Saint Peter was recently placed 11th in the Australian Financial Review’s Top 100 Australian Restaurants, will give guests a much-anticipated glimpse into his refined craft at the event on Monday 11th September at the awardwinning, two-hatted Muse Restaurant. Following the cooking demonstration, Troy Rhoades‐Brown and the Muse team will prepare a three-course lunch served with matching Hunter Valley wines. Hunter Culinary Association (HCA) Chairman Ben Neil said the Spring Seasonal Lunch was always a highlight of the culinary calendar. “Our luncheons begin with a workshop aimed at educating apprentices, members and guests about the new trends, produce and technology being used in the industry,” Mr Neil said. “These events have attracted some of Australia’s finest chefs to the region, including Colin Fassnidge, Massimo Mele, Tetsuya Wakuda and Tony Bilson. “It is an opportunity for our guest chefs to share their knowledge, talent, experience and passion with local apprentices, members and guests. This type of industry exposure can make a huge difference to a young chef’s career development, and the HCA is passionate about guiding and empowering the up and comers of the region through mentoring and guidance. “Josh’s reputation certainly precedes him, so it’s going to be a real treat to see him in action. He started his journey in cookery in the Hunter region, and we are very excited to have him as part of this year’s event.” Established in 2006, the Hunter Culinary Association is a not for profit association guided by a group of industry professionals who volunteer their time to support and promote the region and give back to the industry they are so passionate about. It works together with key stakeholders to guide and empower the young talent of the region and assist them in developing their culinary skills through mentoring and guidance. Tickets to the Spring Seasonal Lunch are $100 for HCA members, $130 for non-members and $30 for apprentice chefs. For more information or to book your place, visit www.hunterculinary.com.au

IT’S SHOW TIME

in Singleton! First held back in 1868, the Singleton Show has been held every year since, only missing four shows since its inception – one due to a severe drought, another because of a state-wide rail strike and two years during World War II when Armed Forces occupied the showground. The 145th show is on at Singleton Showground on 22nd - 24th September 2017.

In what promises to be the biggest and best event yet, this year’s Singleton Show will include a range of activities and events guaranteed to entertain the whole family. The kids will be kept amused by the Oakvale Farm animal nursery, Professor Wallace’s Puppet Theatre, The Happy Tooth native animal and reptile displays, carnival games, rides and face painting. The rest of the family will be entertained by the demolition derby, working dog trails, local camp draft, model train exhibition and a range of educational displays. Friday night will see the return of the popular Glencore Singleton Show Bull Ride, which will see the brave riders compete in five categories for prize money. Following the Bull Ride, dynamic country music husband and wife duo, Adam Eckersley and Brooke McClymont will take to the stage to warm up the crowd with their country music hits. One of the highlights on the Saturday of the Singleton Show each year is the OAK Australian Wife Carrying Titles. What is Wife Carrying, you may ask? It is exactly like it sounds – men carrying wives (or girlfriends, sisters, cousins or friends) through an obstacle course that includes sand, water and fences. The team with the fastest time through the course wins. Sound like fun? Anyone 17 years and over can enter and compete, with eligible winners having the opportunity to compete in the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland in July 2018. If you have never watched a Wife Carrying event before, make sure you check it out on the Saturday afternoon, followed by the spectacular fireworks display. Tickets are available for purchase at the gate - adult tickets $15, children 13 to 18 years $10, pensioners and children 5 to 12 years $5 and children under five years free. BALLOON FIESTA

thb 12 | SEPTEMBER 2017

Feel the

GLOW

at the 2017 Balloon Fiesta WORDS Michelle Meehan

Hot air ballooning enthusiasts will be in seventh heaven from dawn until dusk this month thanks to a new addition to this year’s Hunter Valley Balloon Fiesta. Almost 30 hot air balloons will take to the skies as the sun rises over the Hunter Valley during the four-day festival, which will run from September 29 to October 2. But the party won’t stop when the sun goes down on Saturday, September 30 with an exciting new event set to light up the night – albeit much closer to the ground. The Hunter Valley Night Glow at Roche Estate will offer a sight that has to be seen to be believed as pilots create a choreographed light show with ten hot air balloons (tethered to the ground) by firing their burners in the dark in time to a musical soundtrack. Participating balloons will include the unusually-shaped Dodo and ‘Nudie’ balloons, as well as the newly launched Roche Estate Balloon, which is the biggest passenger balloon in Australia and the latest addition to the Balloon Aloft fleet. Gates for the Night Glow will open at 5pm, with live music and roving performers set to entertain the crowds and jumping castles and face painting included in the price of admission for the younger members of the family. The night will also offer people the chance to walk through a semiinflated hot air balloon, while pilots will be on hand to explain just how the balloons work and answer any questions.

A variety of market stalls will showcase some of the Hunter Valley’s best wine and food, while people are encouraged to bring a picnic rug so they can sit back and enjoy dinner under the stars before the night finishes with a spectacular fireworks display over the Roche Estate vineyard. Inspired by similar events held in Canowindra and Leeton, as well as at other locations around the world, the Night Glow will be a first for the Hunter, expanding on what is already a hugely popular Fiesta program. Entry to the Night Glow is $16 for adults and $7 for children. The Hunter Valley Balloon Fiesta was created by Event Director and Balloon Aloft Senior Pilot Matthew Scaife who had participated in balloon fiestas around the world and saw an opportunity to showcase the beautiful Hunter Valley by holding a similar event here. Now in its seventh year, the event continues to grow in popularity, with last year’s Fiesta selling out weeks in advance. This year the program has been extended from two to four days to allow even more people the opportunity to be a passenger on one of the balloons. (Continued next page) ►

13 | SEPTEMBER 2017 thb

(continued) Close to thirty balloons from all over Australia are expected to take part in 2017, and while you can follow the action from the ground, there’s no doubt the best view in the house will be alongside the pilot in one of the baskets attached to the bottom of the balloons. With the expanded program, more than 400 passengers will be given a chance to take part in the Fiesta for what will be the trip of a lifetime. The excitement begins just before dawn as the fleet of hot air balloons are inflated in the launch field before they take off to drift over the Hunter Valley vineyards for an hour. The celebrations will continue after the flight back at Peterson House with live music, a gourmet breakfast and a champagne tasting to wrap up an exciting and fun-filled morning. Two-time Women’s World Ballooning Champion Nicola Scaife, who works as a pilot alongside her husband Matthew at Balloon Aloft, said being onboard one of the many balloons as they float together at dawn over the vineyards is a “truly breathtaking experience.” Nicola has been flying balloons for more than ten years and said the best thing about ballooning is the look of wonder on passengers’ faces each and every flight.

Ballooning is unique. The intricacy and variation in the wind patterns ensure that no two flights are ever the same.

“Each and every time I fly, I am experiencing that flight for the first time too, and I can share a sense of wonder and exhilaration with my passengers. “It’s hard to describe ballooning to those who haven’t experienced it. There is a silence; a peacefulness that envelops you as soon as you leave the ground. “When you are floating so effortlessly hundreds of feet above the ground, your whole perspective of the world changes. “It is something that everyone needs to experience at least once in their lifetime.” To purchase your tickets for the Night Glow or book a flight on board one of balloons flying in the Fiesta, visit www.balloonaloft.com

The Role of a

The most important work of a sommelier is in the areas of wine procurement, wine storage, wine cellar rotation and providing expert service to the restaurant's clientele. A sommeliers responsibility may also include the development of the restaurants wine list, which in itself can be a complex process requiring constant research and an excellent knowledge of wine and wine varietals. Rather than selecting wines that take the sommelier's fancy or are their personal favourites - the restaurant's wine list must fulfil specific criteria. It is important that the wines selected provide a balance with the food offering and also meet the affordability of the restaurant's patrons. It must deliver an appropriate profit margin and not involve holding excessive amounts of slow-moving stock. Also, as they are in direct contact with the customer, sommeliers must be able to recognise which way their customers want to go, to catch a subtle hint regarding budget limits and to recommend a specific wine that will satisfy the guest. Apart from the long hours, the role can also be quite physical too, with the sommelier having to pick up cases of wine, receive incoming stock, check it against the order, and then move it into secure storage - either in boxes or into wine racks. A busy fine-dining restaurant could receive up to 30 boxes of wine and other beverages in a week, all of which must be handled until its ultimate sale. A sommelier may also be responsible for the training of other restaurant staff in the handling and serving of wines to customers. Furthermore, a sommelier works closely with the kitchen to be fully prepared to give wine recommendations in accordance to food pairing to guests. This requires a deep knowledge of how food and wine, beer, spirits and other beverages work in harmony. Every time a new wine is added to the list, the waiters and bar staff have to be introduced to it and learn what foods to match it with and how to describe it. Most wine lists are constantly evolving, so the training aspect of the job never stops. The top sommeliers tend to be very talented people who have built up an enviable knowledge of the wines and vintages of the old and new worlds. It takes a number of years and a great deal of focus to develop an accurate wine palate and to be able to confidently identify the various wine varieties. In modern times, a sommelier's role may be considered broader than working only with wines and may encompass all aspects of the restaurant's service, with an enhanced focus on wines, beers, spirits, cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages and coffee.

Sommelier WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN

Apart from being difficult to pronounce and sounding just a little pretentious, the word “sommelier” is a French word meaning “wine steward” – a trained and knowledgeable wine professional specialising in all areas of beverage service. I know that from my experience of talking with Sommeliers that they are for the most part super passionate about what they do. Sommeliers can be an interesting bunch and are generally only found in our better restaurants, and those restaurants that specialise in all aspects of wine service, including wine and food pairings. The role is much more specialised and informed than that of a wine waiter, and in the finest restaurants, the role can be as important as that of the executive chef. Most people's dealings with sommeliers are limited to a brief conversation at a restaurant table while trying to select a wine or finding a wine to go with their food, but there is a lot more to the sommelier's job than pulling corks and providing adjective-rich descriptions of the wine.

Eating Out with

FOOD ALLERGIES WORDS Carla Elkin For most people, eating out is an enjoyable experience. But if you suffer from a food allergy, intolerance or a condition such as coeliac disease, the risks of eating food prepared in a restaurant – not to mention the hassles of having to plan ahead – can sometimes outweigh the benefits of a night out. According to the NSW Food Authority, Australia has one of the highest rates of allergies in the world. Food intolerance affects around 25% of the population, with 1 in 20 children in NSW and about 2 in 100 adults having a food allergy. The most common triggers are peanut, egg, milk, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, sesame and wheat. While most food allergies in children are not severe and may be ‘outgrown’ in time, some allergies are lifelong and can be severe, causing life-threatening reactions known as anaphylaxis. Hospital admissions for anaphylaxis have doubled over the last decade and worryingly, admissions of babies and children aged up to 4 years of age have increased five-fold over the same period. With more and more people suffering from these food intolerances, restaurants are becoming far more familiar with and happy to cater to (Continued next page) ►

(continued) special dietary requirements. Unfortunately, though, there is no way to guarantee that food prepared by someone else will be free from allergens, but by following a few simple steps, eating out won’t seem so impossible! 1. View the restaurant’s menu on their website and see if the restaurant is suitable for you. Many restaurants will already have gluten free or dairy free options marked on their menu, which can make the process much easier. 2. Call the restaurant in advance and share your food restrictions. Speak to the manager or chef, if possible. They will be the right people to answer your questions and can let you know which dishes will be suitable for you. 3. If you haven’t organised your meal prior, make sure you tell the wait staff about your allergy and clearly communicate your specific needs. This will make it easier for restaurant staff to cater for you. 4. Try to dine at the restaurant at a less busy time, especially if you have not made enquires beforehand. This will ensure the manager is available should you wish to ask any questions and ensures that the kitchen staff are not too busy to accommodate your requests. The Hunter Valley has an endless array of dining options but narrowing down where to dine when you have an allergy or intolerance can be a real art form. Here are a few of the restaurants who indicate on their menus if a dish is gluten free, dairy free, nut free or egg free, provide gluten free options and/or are happy to accommodate dietary requirements (with prior notice or by advising wait staff upon ordering): Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen, Taste of the Country, Restaurant Cuvee, Il Cacciatore, Hunters Quarter, Matilda Bay Brewhouse, RidgeView Restaurant, Harrigan’s Irish Pub, Muse Restaurant, The Cellar Restaurant, The Verandah Restaurant and Sabor in the Hunter Dessert Bar.

Located at Gartelmann Wines. The Deck Café Lovedale provides a diverse and delightful menu complimented by Gartelmann Wines and Piazza Doro Coffee.

Each year Hart & Hunter produce a small batch of magnums for those wines destined for greatness and longevity. Over the weekend of 23rd and 24th September, Hart & Hunter are giving you the opportunity to taste these wines paired with some great food at their annual Magnum Madness. Magnums, (the equivalent of two bottles) are an excellent way to cellar your favourite wines, as they age more slowly than their 750ml equivalents. This prolonged maturation allows for more complex flavours to develop over time. Not only do magnums look impressive but they scream celebration! They also make an excellent gift, and the Hart & Hunter magnum range come with an engraved label and gorgeously packaged box. For this year’s Magnum Madness, Hart & Hunter have joined forces with The Cellar Restaurant, who will be creating five canapés to match the five magnums on pour, including such delights as a ceviche of scallop with lemon vinaigrette matched with 2016 Single Vineyard Semillon. Tickets are just $30 per person. Bookings are essential by calling the cellar door on 4998 7645 or emailing cellardoor@hartandhunter.com.au

Sip into Spring WORDS Carla Elkin

Spring has sprung at last and it’s safe to say we are looking forward to the warmer weather and our palettes are ready for the seasons bounty. However, we are not just craving all the fresh seasonal produce, but also the seasonal spirits and cocktails. It’s time to put aside the winter warmers and deep, richly flavoured drinks in favour of the lighter, brighter and fresher flavours of Spring! So, what is a Spring cocktail? While there is no definitive answer, most people would agree it is something that can be tossed together with the freshest seasonal ingredients and rewards you with maximum refreshment for minimal effort. There is no better way to celebrate the impending arrival of the warmer months than using the flavours of Spring, such as mint, ginger, strawberry, mango and raspberry to concoct a little Spring in a glass, that is as delicious as it is colourful. Just like the menu at your favourite Hunter Valley restaurant, Spring cocktails change from year to year depending what fresh seasonal produce is available as well as what is on-trend. So, to impress your friends and family at your next cocktail party, dinner or casual barbeque, we have rounded up the top trends in cocktails this Spring… 1. Drink your greens – There has been a strong emergence of vegetables and vegetable juices as cocktail ingredients. 2. Health conscious cocktails – A focus on natural ingredients like coldpressed juices and coconut water. 3. Low or no alcohol – Heightened health awareness among consumers will see low or no alcohol cocktails becoming a regular bar menu fixture. Say cheers to Spring with our favourite spring cocktail recipe that offers refreshing Spring sipping, with fruity flavours…

Abbey McDonald (right) and David Bate

New Faces at Nan's! In 2015, Jimmy and Matty Kerr quit their jobs to pursue a mutual dream, to own and manage their own family restaurant, Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen. After initially opening in Lovedale, the restaurant moved to their current location in Pokolbin. While the journey hasn’t been all smooth sailing, two years on and over 40,000 plates of food later, the risks have paid off as Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen has cemented its place as one of the most popular restaurants in the Hunter Valley for locals and visitors alike. The future of Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen is looking just as bright as they welcome two new chefs to their team. Abbey McDonald originally qualified as a chef in the Hunter Valley in 2011 before heading off around Australia to work at a number of five-star, fine dining restaurants in Sydney, Uluru and the Blue Mountains. Abbey returned home last year, working at James Estate before taking on the Head Chef role at Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen last month. Abbey is joined by David Bate who spent almost a decade cooking his way across Europe before coming home to the Hunter region. Most notably David, affectionately known as Davey, spent time working at the multi-award winning Three Chimneys restaurant on the Isle of Skye in Scotland ranked 41st on the Top 50 Places to Eat in the UK. Abbey and Davey will be cooking up a storm at Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen daily for breakfast, lunch and High Tea. They both have a keen interest in vegan cuisine which dovetails beautifully with Nanna Kerr’s focus on fresh, organic and healthy food sourced as locally as possible. In the short time they have worked together, they have already created a vegan, gluten-free fritter that satisfies the appetite of any carnivore for breakfast and a vegan, glutenfree Sticky Date Pudding with Ginger and Coconut Sauce and a Pear Cream - not even Nan can tell it’s vegan! The pair are committed to raising the bar on breakfast in the Valley and will be showing off their fine dining skills on the first Saturday of every month at the Winemakers Dinner.

Jimmy and Matty, the husband and husband team behind Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen, can still be found on the restaurant floor helping guests navigate their way around the vineyards or experimenting in the kitchen. Nanna’s retail space has also had a makeover and new additions include the family’s KORA and Divine skincare ranges and chemical free perfumes alongside jams, chutneys, relishes, organic chai syrups and chocolate. While Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen in Pokolbin continues to go from strength to strength, Jimmy and Matty are looking at opening Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen #2 at a second location in NSW in the next 12 months, as well as more exciting things in the Hunter Valley, so stay tuned for what they have in store for us next!

Located in the idyllic Lovedale area on Lovedale Road, Gartelmann Wines produces wines from NSW’s premium wine regions. The welcoming cellar door extends to the adjoining Deck Café overlooking the picturesque bush setting. Enjoy 18 wines including Hunter Valley Semillon and Shiraz or Mudgee Shiraz through to the trophy-winning Orange region Merlot and our new Pinot Gris. The luscious Liqueur Muscat is a must to try.

Beer &

Food Pairing WORDS QUENTIN VON ESSEN

While wine is often the obvious “go to” companion to food, it is hard to ignore beer’s food pairing capabilities due to its depth and versatility. With the booming craft beer industry capturing the hearts and taste buds of beer lovers around the world, fullflavoured craft beers can bring out the best in any dish—if you know which kind to choose! There’s plenty of advice out there when it comes to wine and food pairing, but when it comes to matching beer and food, what reigns supreme is your palate. There are no rules, but there are of course some tried and tested guidelines to help you navigate the constantly expanding world of craft beer and cuisine. Pairing beer with food is all about coaxing the most pleasure out of each. And that means we have to consider what elements are at play, such as texture, flavour, aromatics, fat, acidity, sweetness, bitterness, and carbonation, to name a few. Well-carbonated beers—like a German pilsner—are naturally refreshing when served with rich food. Likewise, a crisp IPA can cut through the heat when you’re munching on spicy cuisine. (Continued next page) ►

hops also have assertive flavours, which can distract from the flavours of the dish. In a situation where a beer that is too hoppy threatens to overwhelm the dish, you may be better off going for a moderately hopped pale ale or even a crisp lager. But again, when in doubt, your palate is your best guide, so follow it. And as always with pairings, if at first, you don’t succeed, try again! Here are a few pairing suggestions for some of our locally brewed beer types from the Hunter Beer Co. in Nulkaba.

Hunter Witbier

Brewed with fruit and spices, this Belgian style wheat beer is a staple for many visitors. A fluffy white head caps this hazy golden ale that improves with every mouthful that keeps you wanting more. Try a Witbier with mussels prepared in a Witbier broth with a little coriander and chilli added. Pairs well with lighter foods like salads, sushi and anything consumed outdoors.

Hunter Pale Ale

(Continued)

Similar to wine and food matching, it helps to consider weight and substance and remember that light beers go with lighter dishes (pilsner with seafood), and heavy beers go with heavy dishes (stout with beef stew). Food and beverage pairings can complement or contrast, and often do both. If you’ve ever had pizza with a light, hoppy beer, you will have unwittingly experienced just how the carbonation and hops cut through the contrasting grease. Hops provide the structure to beer and along with carbonation can cut through the richness of a dish, which is a great way to create highlighting contrasts. But in certain styles like IPA,

Rich passionfruit and grapefruit flavours balanced by caramel and toasty biscuit malt sweetness – a flavour sensation. This American style pale ale uses four US hops that give citrus character and plenty of bitterness. Try with Asian cuisines, a burger with the works or a chunk of stilton cheese.

Hunter Bock

A dark German lager with hints of biscuit, bread-crusts, raisins and espresso. Long lagering times have produced a dark beer with a creamy smooth mouthfeel that makes this very popular. Comfort food is a great match with this beer – try it with lamb shanks or a beef casserole. Also pairs well with any spicy food, along with sharp, bitter flavours like white cheddar cheese. Feeling adventurous – take a sip of beer while eating chocolate cake.

Whether it's a luscious Hunter estate Pinot Gris, a beautiful Sangiovese or a wonderful Pinot Grigio for the warmer months... Taste and buy at our cellar door – we are open 7 days from 10am to 5pm. Enjoy! You can also buy online for delivery to your home or office.

Hunter Kolsch

A refreshing German style golden ale – pale gold with a light honey-biscuit malt character, subtle passionfruit and pineapple flavours are delicately balanced with a light bitterness and drying finish. A Kolsch is delicious with salad, seafood or bruschetta. These beers also complement foods that blend sweet and spicy flavours, like Thai cuisine, mango salad, and a wide range of sausages.

Hunter Porter

An easy drinking, flavoursome and approachable brown ale with a range of mocha-like flavours. It goes well with anything smoked or roasted— chicken, burgers, bacon—along with chocolateflavoured desserts.

Slaked Magpie

Hunter Beer Co.

A dark beer for those people who do not drink dark beers! Imagine a beer with coffee or chocolate flavours, a beer with a touch of sweetness, a beer with a hint of vanilla – that’s the Magpie! Head Brewer, Keith say’s it's perfect to pair with a chocolate cake and vanilla bean ice-cream. In May 2016 – this beer was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2016 AIBA International Beer Competition. Coming soon is the Lezak (Batch #2) – with a gorgeous golden hue, rich malt flavour and is hopped generously with noble hops. The Hunter Beer Co. is located just next to Potters on Wine Country Drive in Nulkaba – operating seven days a week, producing a range of beers that are world renown and multiple award-winning, a must see-and-do for all beer lovers! Katherine said the plans have already been approved by council, with construction hopefully beginning towards the end of the year. While there is already a swimming pool on the site, Katherine said they also planned to build additional “entertainment facilities” to make it “not just like a winery or vineyard facility, but more like a resort”. She believed expanding their unique offerings would increase visitation, not only to Nightingale Wines but the whole of the Broke Fordwich wine region. “Not many people know the Broke area, they know a lot about Pokolbin, but this area can draw more attention. It’s famous for mining, but when you talk about Hunter vineyards, people only talk about Pokolbin. “There’s something we can do to promote the whole area’s vineyard industry. In Pokolbin, you don’t have this view (of Yellow Rock), but because of the unique location of Broke we can do more things to make this exciting.” Increasing the number of special events held at the vineyard is also on the cards for Katherine, who already hosts the annual Hunter French Car Day, complete with live music and French inspired food stalls. “I want to do a fashion event, like fashion in the vines, also I might do a Hawaii party. I want to do more theme parties in the winery, which a lot of people are not doing... it was first planted in the 1970s and can now be found mostly in the northeast and mid-west, as well as in Canada. In Australia, the grape did not show up until the late 1970's and was first planted in 1981 at Cassegrain Wines, just outside Port Macquarie on the mid north coast of NSW. Chambourcin is now a widely used variety with an intense dark colour that has recently led winemakers to use it to improve the depth of blended red wines without sacrificing the fruit quality of the main variety (e.g., Shiraz). Some producers use the variety for sparkling reds, and it is also used successfully to produce port-style wines. Because this variety is especially resistant to fungal diseases, Chambourcin is a variety that succeeds wonderfully in the Hunter Valley climate and is also most at home in the more humid regions of Coastal NSW and Queensland, who all experience wet summers. Chambourcin wines have a lovely, deep red colour and herbaceous aroma. Most are big and fruity with raspberries, plums, prunes and even cranberries on the palate. It is not as heavy or robust as Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon, which can make it quite attractive to people who don't like red wine. Chambourcin wines also respond well to being oaked, a treatment which can produce vanilla or mocha flavours in the wine. When it comes to food, Chambourcin is a very versatile wine that will pair well with lighter meats, pork, lamb, sausage, poultry, pasta, cheeses and chocolate (or desserts made from the chocolate). If you are looking for an interesting red wine that is a departure from your usual Cabernet, Merlot and Pinot, Chambourcin is a great alternative. Where to find it: Tamburlaine Wines, Capercaillie Wines, RidgeView Wines, Ivanhoe Wines, Petersons Wines, Stonehurst Cedar Creek, Calais Estate and Ballabourneen Wines.

Chambourcin Unique in so many ways

Chambourcin is a relatively new purple skinned French-American hybrid grape producing intensely coloured wines of light to medium body with fruity aromas, cherry and earthy complexities with no unpleasant hybrid flavours. It can be made into a dry style or one with a moderate residual sugar level, giving it a pleasant sweetness. Chambourcin is unique from other red grape varieties as it yields pink or red juice, while all other varieties produce a clear juice. Although the exact parentage of the Chambourcin grape is not known, we do know that it was developed by Joannes Seyve in France’s Loire Valley before being released in the early 1960's. The vines then made it to the new world wine regions, where they continue to produce easy to grow, high yielding, hardy, thick-skinned grapes that are extremely disease resistant. It is widely grown in North America where

TOP DROPS

The 2016 Hunter Reserve Chambourcin has bright purple hues with aromas of ripe mulberries, vanilla and Chinese five spice. It has a medium-full bodied palate with forest floor characters and gentle tannins from oak maturation. CELLARING Drink now however you will be well rewarded after 10+ years in a good cellar.

CAPERCAILLIE WINES 2016 Hunter Valley Chambourcin Fruit for this wine was handpicked at Capercaillie in the second week of February 2016 and fermented in a single open stainless-steel fermenter. The wine then received 15 months maturation in one and two-year-old Vicard French oak barriques. This has resulted in a vibrant, deeply coloured wine showing ripe plum and spice aromas typical of the variety. These flavours persist on the palate and are supported by fine tannins and natural fruit acidity. CELLARING This wine can be enjoyed immediately or with careful cellaring will continue to develop and drink well for at least the next five years.

RIDGEVIEW WINES 2014 Chambourcin This wine displays an intense black/purple hue and a rich nose of ripe red forest fruits and elegant vanilla oak. The palate has pronounced wild berry fruit, blackberry and red cherry flavours with subtle oak nuances and a long lingering finish. This wine is ready for immediate enjoyment as an accompaniment to Mediterranean cuisine, braised duck or pork. CELLARING Further complexity will develop with careful cellaring over the next 5+ years.

WE BELIEVE IN THE SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE. THEY JUST NEED TO BE AMAZING.

Fancy a game of Polo? Mention polo and most people conjure up images of Prince Charles, wealthy aristocrats and elegant ponies. However, polo is just as much for the common folk as it is for the nobles and the upper classes of society. If you have never witnessed a game of polo before, do not miss The Pryde’s Easifeed Hunter Polo Challenge at Wirragulla Polo Club’s Tammil Creek Polo Ground on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September 2017. An event like no other, it unites country folk and urbanites, all seeking the sociable, relaxed, weekend fun that only a polo tournament can provide. The Wirragulla Polo Club, located in a beautiful rural setting on the southern outskirts of the quaint country town of Dungog, is only a short one hour from Wine Country. They have been hosting polo games since 1923, with The Hunter Polo Challenge having taken place for the past eight years. Beau Blundell, President of Wirragulla Polo Club, Director of NSW Polo, and Australian Polo Federation coach says, “We are a not for profit sporting club that endeavours to promote the game of polo for competition, as well as a social or spectator sport that can be enjoyed by everyone.” For anyone wondering what a game of polo is like, Blundell says, “Polo requires teamwork, gamesmanship, athleticism and agile ponies

with plenty of stamina and a keen sense of the game; there is no place for the faint-hearted.” The Club Captain of Wirragulla Polo Club is Jock Mackay, grandson of one of the founding members of the club. Jock has been a professional polo player for 13 years and has been selected as part of the Australian squad to play at The Polo World Championships in Sydney next month. “The 2017 Hunter Polo Challenge is looking to be the biggest yet” Mackay says. "The level of polo will be high, with some competitors very keen to win trophies and defeat past winning opponents.” In addition to the polo on the field, spectators can expect gourmet food vendors, a well-stocked licensed bar, entertainment for the kids and activities to get the crowd involved such as the quintessential ‘stomping of the divots’, ‘fashions on the field’ and plenty of prizes to be won. Bring along your picnic or pre-order a gourmet hamper to enjoy in the picnic area while watching the event. Tickets can be purchased at the gate for $10 per person, with children under 16 free. A coach will be providing transportation from Newcastle and Maitland to the polo ground for $25 per person for the round trip, contact Sid Foggs on 4928 1088 to book. The event will run from 9am to 5pm each day. For more information, visit www.wirragullapoloclub.com.au
