With the Hunter Valley experiencing one of the best vintages on record last year it was no surprise that the winners list at this year’s Hunter Valley Wine Show was dominated by last year’s stunning vintage. Judging wrapped up late last month with more than 700 wines tasted over three days resulting in 20 trophies, 49 gold medals, 77 silver and 210 bronze medals. Shiraz and Semillon shone on the day while new variety Fiano also had the judges talking. Who were the winners? Find out on page 24. Also new to the Hunter is Running Horse Wines, recently opened by former jockey turned vigneron David Fromberg. Located within the picturesque surrounds of the Broke Fordwich region, overlooking the iconic Yellow Rock escarpment, this Cellar Door is as unique as the wines it has on tasting. This month we caught up with David to find out how one goes about building a Cellar Door from shipping containers with such spectacular results! At the other end of the age-scale is Dalwood Estate – who are celebrating 190 years in the industry. It’s an achievement that positions the stunning vineyard as Australia’s oldest vineyard and arguably, the birthplace of the Australian wine industry.

A skill she learnt at her mother’s side, Catherine continued to practice the craft when she became a mother herself, knitting all sorts of creations for her young children. While she set aside the knitting as her family grew up, a new generation of children – and an unexpected business opportunity - saw the needles called into action once more. make shoes for their children, eventually inspiring her to turn a much-loved hobby into a fledgeling business opportunity under the banner of My First Shoes. “I knitted from the time I was five with my mother, and I knitted when my children were young, but I hadn’t knitted for 30 years or more until my grandchildren came along,” she said. “(My First Shoes) really began with my first grandchild. My daughter was living in Utah at the time, it was freezing cold, and she asked me to knit (her son) some things. She said the thing she missed most from home were ugg boots, so I decided to knit some. Then all her friends kept asking me to make some for them and so I made more and more and more. “I’ve been doing the markets for about four years now, and I knit about six different designs including the ugg boots and some gym boots that look like Converse sandshoes. “They’re not baby booties, they’re made to look like a shoe, and they’re all really practical, everything I make fits really well, even my ugg boots I design so the kids can’t get them off. “I don’t see the point in spending all that time making things if they’re not of value to people. It’s an old art but I’ve made things that appeal to young people, and I think it’s lovely to be able to bring an old art into a modern era.” Catherine uses two different yarns for her shoes – a lighter 100 per cent Egyptian cotton variety for the summer months and a beautifully soft and warm winter weight that is 75 per cent merino wool, 20 per cent cashmere and five per cent silk. She sells them each month at the Handmade in the Hunter Market, with her creations not only being snapped up by local buyers but also proving a popular gift for international visitors heading back overseas. Check out Catherine’s latest designs at this month’s markets, which will be held at Kevin Sobels Wines from 9am to 3pm on September 8, 22, 29 and 30.

Dalwood
ESTATE
hvb 16 | SEPTEMBER 2018
AUSTRALIA’S OLDEST VINEYARD
Given a New Lease on Life!
It is Australia’s oldest surviving vineyard and the site of the country’s first commercial Shiraz plantings. But for more than half a century a vital piece in the historical puzzle was missing from the site credited with being the birthplace of Hunter Valley wine – its name. WORDS Michelle Meehan
Established on the banks of the Hunter River near the township of Branxton in 1828 by immigrant George Wyndham, the property was named Dalwood in honour of his father’s family estate in England. George set about planting a vineyard on one part of the property and produced his first vintage in Branxton in 1835. For the next 130-odd years, despite a change in ownership, the property and its Dalwood label wine became renowned across Australia and internationally. When the 260-acre site was sold in 1967 without the wine brand attached, the Dalwood label and the vineyard where it was created were forced to part ways, with all future wine from the vineyard sold under the new Wyndham Estate label in honour of its founder. After the 1970's when production of the Dalwood label wine stopped, the iconic brand seemed destined to live on only in the annals of Australian winemaking history – that is until late last year when Sydney hotelier and developer Sam Arnaout secured both the vineyard and the wine brand in separate business deals. It was the third Hunter vineyard bought by the developer’s Iris Capital group in recent years, following its purchase of both the Sweetwater Estate in Rothbury and the Hungerford Hill complex in 2016. Reunited once again for what is the 190th anniversary of the vineyard, 2018 marks a significant new chapter in the history of Dalwood
Estate according to General Manager and Senior Winemaker Bryan Currie. “Dalwood is an integral part of Australia’s wine and agricultural history,” he said. “When you visit you can sense the history in the property with the house and buildings, old trees and Wyndham family cemetery. Combined with its natural beauty, Dalwood is a jewel in the crown of the Hunter Valley. “George Wyndham purchased the property in 1828 and named it Dalwood. It is the property’s original name, and with the release of the premium Dalwood Estate wines this year from grapes grown on the Dalwood vineyard, this name carries with it the history of the property.”
The Past
English pastoralist and vigneron George Wyndham and his wife Margaret settled on the Dalwood property near Branxton in January 1828. They were accompanied by several servants and a collection of sheep, pigs, horses and hounds, as well as New South Wales’ first herd of purebred Hereford cattle. Using a variety of vine cuttings, George began planting his vineyard, systematically trialling over 70 different varieties of grapes to establish those which best suited the soil and conditions. Around 600 vine cuttings were given to him by British botanist James Busby, but among George’s most important plantings were a selection of Shiraz and Semillon (originally called Shepherd's Hardy White) vines, with Dalwood later becoming recognised as the Australian “home” of these varieties. “Dalwood had these varieties planted before the famous James Busby vine collection even arrived in NSW,” Bryan said. “Dalwood is widely credited as having the first commercial vineyard of Shiraz planted in Australia and is the ‘home’ of Shiraz. “George Wyndham sourced cuttings far and wide from the original colonial vineyards around Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River for the original Dalwood vineyards.” (Continued next page) ►
17 | SEPTEMBER 2018 hvb
(Continued) After a successful first vintage in 1835, George expanded his plantings to a further 38 acres of vines at Dalwood, while in later years his son John expanded the vineyard to 78 acres, with Dalwood becoming the second largest vineyard in NSW by 1886. Dalwood wines were being exported to England and India by the mid-1800s and in the 1860’s, ’70s and ’80s they were bringing home some of the top awards from wine shows in the Hunter, Sydney, Adelaide, London, Paris, Bordeaux, Amsterdam and Calcutta. The Wyndham family led the way in promoting Australia’s fledgeling wine industry overseas during this time and were crucial in helping put Australian wines on the world map. In 1904 the Dalwood property and its wine brand were purchased by another pioneering Australian family-owned company, Penfolds, who continued to build on the reputation of the wine being produced at the Hunter vineyard. The site changed hands again in 1967 when Penfolds sold the vineyard, but not the wine label, to Perc McGuigan, who on-sold it to a three-man partnership that included his son Brian. Under their guidance, the site was renamed Wyndham Estate in honour of its founder, but over the years it became just one aspect of the operations controlled by a company that grew into one of the true giants of the Australian wine industry. The Wyndham Estate company was taken over by the French Pernod Ricard group in 1990, with the Dalwood site continuing to operate as a successful cellar door, restaurant, wedding and concert venue until 2014 own Penfolds), Iris Capital set about restoring the 260-acre property to when the company decided to close the estate. its former glory. The property’s future remained in limbo for a number of years before Bryan said it took an extensive renewal program to clean up the Iris Capital thankfully stepped in, throwing a lifeline to one of the most estate, which had been virtually untouched since its closure in 2014. significant sites in Australia’s rich viticultural history. But with the cellar door back in business and a new café (named after botanist James Busby) now in operation, Dalwood Estate is once again a buzzing hive of activity. Hunter Galleries project launched at Dalwood featuring more than 100 works from both emerging and established artists. The exhibition displays a mixture of modern and traditional art, with visitors able to experience the pieces inside a traditional gallery space as well as outdoors, with life-size sculptures scattered around the property grounds. “Dalwood Estate has been extensively renovated and cleaned and is now in great condition,” Bryan said. “Dalwood has a cellar door and restaurant ‘Mr. Busby's’ open on
weekends and is hosting monthly markets, weddings, conferences, concerts and events. “Our plans are for Dalwood to be the premier Hunter Valley location for both private and public events. Dalwood has the perfect secluded location on the banks of the Hunter River, amongst the vines.” There’s also plenty of things happening in the winery itself, with the first Dalwood Estate label wines already released using fruit harvested from the vineyard. These days the vineyard covers 23 hectares, with flourishing Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz vines, and Tempranillo and Touriga being planted. So far this year Dalwood Estate has released a 2018 Semillon, 2017 Shiraz and 2017 Chardonnay, with Sparkling, Rose, and Tempranillo varieties still to come. Bryan said it had been a triumphant return for the historic wine label, with the recent vintages producing great fruit to work with. “The 2018 Semillon is fresh and aromatic with lemongrass and lime aromas and a long crisp finish in the classic Hunter style, while the 2017 Chardonnay is creamy with ripe peaches and cashew nut. Richly textured, it has well-integrated oak and exotic flavours,” he said. “The 2017 Shiraz is deeply coloured with red fruits and spice, followed by a seamless palate with well-integrated oak. “2017 and 2018 were both great vintages with warm, dry growing seasons, although 2017 was a little cooler than 2018. Both produced fantastic, disease-free ripe fruit, a winemakers dream! “Dalwood is Australia’s oldest surviving vineyard site and winery in the oldest surviving wine region, the Hunter Valley - it is a privilege to be the winemaker for this iconic property and to be the most recent contributor to its storied history.”

SHIRAZ Stars at this Year’s Hunter Valley Wine Show
The 2018 Hunter Valley Wine Show concluded on 24 August with more than 700 wines tasted over three days of judging during which 20 trophies were awarded, along with 49 gold medals, 77 silver medals and 210 bronze. With the Hunter Valley experiencing one of the best vintages on record in 2017, the judging was dominated by last year’s stunning vintage, which continued to impress the panel throughout the tasting, including this year’s international judge, Asia Wine Service and Education Centre Senior Wine Educator, Corinne Mui. "At this moment, Australian winemakers are making the best wine ever," she said. "The Shiraz, in particular, is fragrant and elegant, bursting with vibrant fruit." Chair of Judges, Sarah Crowe, a former Hunter Valley winemaker herself, said it had been an extremely rewarding week, with Hunter Shiraz just pipping Semillon at the total medal count post to be the most successful variety entered. "Shiraz from the 2017 vintage stole the hearts of the judges and dominated the medal tally," she said. "Pristine fruit with flavour intensity has been handled with respect in the winery, and the many beautiful examples meant it was a delight to judge. These wines are youthful and have a very strong future, and I expect they will perform well in future shows too. "Teasing out the top wines was very difficult, and full respect goes to the winemakers who showed restraint with oak and bottled their wines so bright and fresh. These are the wines collectors should seek out for cellaring." Sarah said the very young 2018 Semillons also performed well and she expected them to be even better again next year once they’d had time in the bottle. "The 2017 Semillon classes were stunning, the wines showing great purity of fruit with pristine acidity," she said.
"In the museum Semillon class, the 2013 vintage was very strong. With five years’ bottle maturation, coupled with the intensity of fruit, they are now hitting their straps and were rewarded accordingly. Having said that, there were also stunning examples of 2009, 2006 and 2005 showing how remarkable a wine style Hunter Semillon is." Other high-performing whites were Chardonnay and Verdelho, which Sarah said had "returned to form" with a trophy going to a bright, fresh style of a well-loved variety. "A new variety to the Hunter, the Fiano, also had the judges talking," she said. "The Fiano seems well suited to the Hunter Valley, and we’re looking forward to watching this variety in the future." The big winners on the day were Tyrrell’s winery, with seven trophies (including Iain Riggs Wine of Provenance for the Tyrrell’s Vineyard Stevens Semillon), and Mount Pleasant with six. Mt Pleasants 1880 Vines 2017 Old Hill Shiraz dominated the awards winning five trophies, although the Tyrrell’s Belford Semillon 2013, Stevens Semillon 2018 and First Creek Winemakers Reserve Chardonnay 2017 were all multiple winners. Other trophy winners were Tamburlaine Wines for Best Verdelho with their Hunter Valley Reserve 2018 Verdelho; Drayton’s Family Wines for Best Fortified Wine; De Iuliis Wines for Best Other Red and Agnew Wines for Best One-Year-Old Dry Semillon with their Audrey Wilkinson 2017 Winemakers Selection Semillon.

at RUNNING HORSE WINES For a jockey, winning a race is all about the timing. Making sure you don’t miss the jump from the gates, knowing when to hold the horse back, sensing when to make your run. Timing is also a key element of success for a winemaker. Knowing when to harvest your crop, assessing when to take the juice off the skins, understanding how to age the wine for the best outcome. Former jockey turned winemaker David Fromberg certainly knows a thing or two about timing. As a jockey struggling to keep his weight under the 47kg limit, he knew the time had come to find a new career. WORDS Michelle Meehan
The cellar door overlooks Yellow Rock
As a winemaker passionate about creating wines that are designed to stay, not sprint, he knows how to pass the time while he waits. But the wait is finally over for David, who earlier this year opened a cellar door for his Running Horse Wines label – almost two decades after he first planted vines on his family’s 56-acre property at Broke. “I’ve always loved horses really,” he said. “I grew up in Maroubra, but I always rode horses. My father has owned this property (at Broke) since ’88, and I used to have my pet horses up here, I used to always come up here on weekends or any chance I had... I was a bit more country orientated. “I didn’t think I could be a jockey because I was a bit taller than the average and then I jumped on the scales, and I was 47 kilo, so I thought ‘I’ll have a go.’ “My apprenticeship went from ’93 to ’97, and when I finished my apprenticeship, I went overseas for three years. When I came back I had maybe ten rides and rode three winners, but maintaining the weight got the better of me and I decided to build the vineyard. “We had the land here, and I decided to build a vineyard! That was the naiveté of it,” laughs David. “That was in 2000, and now years later, I’ve finally built a cellar door too. I wasn't going to borrow money to build it, so I had to keep chipping away to get the money. And then in the meantime, I also made all the vintages that I’ve been cellaring.” Now open to the public, Running Horse Wines is located within the picturesque surrounds of the Broke Fordwich region, overlooking the iconic Yellow Rock escarpment. With such a beautiful landscape around him, David knew his cellar door had to be something special to make the most of the views. Designed by his friend David Kaunitz from Kaunitz Yeung Architecture, the complex has been constructed using six shipping containers that have been stacked purposefully, but with a seemingly haphazard appearance, to elevate the cellar door above the level of the vineyard. The design makes the most of the tapestry of views surrounding the complex, with the cellar door orientated to showcase the distant mountains. The shipping containers have been artfully repurposed with extensive use of glass to open them up to the landscape, while massive sandstone boulders seem to anchor the weathered steel buildings into the natural environment. Timber, glass, copper and steel also feature prominently within the interior design of the complex, with a mass display of wine bottles sporting Running Horse Wines’ distinctive spiral label creating an eyecatching feature along one wall. The true centrepiece of the space, however, is the gleaming glass-topped bar, which incorporates a series of light panels that help to showcase the colour and clarity of the wine being tasted. Designed to sit within the natural environment while still making a statement, the cellar door is certainly among the most striking in the Hunter wine region and David said he was immediately struck by the concept design put forward by his friend. “It was easy to like it,” he said. (Continued next page) ►
27 | SEPTEMBER 2018 hvb
The glass-topped table is the centrepiece of the cellar door
(Continued) “I changed a few things on the design, but it was all about getting two storeys up so we could overlook the vineyard from the cellar door and capture the view over the vineyard. “There’s also the spectacular views of Yellow Rock. You get up high, and you get the beautiful views looking back over the national park, over the vineyard and the stables. It's really a great place to sit and taste wines.” What’s most striking about Running Horse Wines, however, is what’s in the bottles. David is one of the few vignerons in the region specifically producing aged wines, with his range including varieties of Semillon, Verdelho, Rose and Shiraz. The wines are produced using fruit from his vines and made by Pokolbin-based contract winemaker Nick Patterson. “You can go through hundreds of cellar doors and never get to look at a range of wines so different,” David said. “You get to do vertical tastings; you get to look at wines that are 12 years-old that are still drinking fantastic but have real bottle-aged characters coming through. Semillons that are 13 years old that still look like they’re six years old, or Verdelhos that are the same, they just age fantastically well. “If you look at the colour of the wine they look much younger than a 12 year-old wine, they're ageing gracefully. That emphasises how high the quality is here because if they were second-grade fruit, they would be looking much more oxidised.” David said the 2005, 2006 and 2011 Shiraz were particularly good right now, offering a classic, spicy Hunter bouquet that complements the smooth palate of cherries and subtle mint, with silky tannins and hints of chocolate and vanilla from 18 months maturation in new French Oak.
However, the wine hasn’t been the only thing on David’s mind for the past few years. As the name of the wine label suggests, the ex-jockey is still passionate about horses. He has continued to train and race a number of homebred horses over the years including Rhyno Chaser, Mean Beans, Grab The Jewels and Cher Cher Shark, with an impressive set of starting gates in his front paddock highlighting the property’s dual purpose. He is currently working with an unraced three-year-old and two-year-old, with the timing looking almost right to give them their first start. “Horses are magnificent animals; they don’t do much wrong. Everything they do is graceful,” David says. “I guess I am fortunate to be able to combine my two loves, horses and wine, and have them co-exist happily in one place.” Make sure you visit Running Horse Wines while you’re in the Hunter Valley – you’ll find it at 1133 Milbrodale Road, Broke Fordwich or visit www.runninghorsewines.com.au ■

From the VISITOR
INFORMATION CENTRE WHAT’S ON At The Hunter Valley Visitor Information Centre In September? Join our friendly team at the Hunter Valley Visitor Information Centre in September for some inspiration on things do during Spring.
Budburst Brings the Valley to Life
This month the Hunter Valley Visitor Information Centre has a special themed display on “budburst”. Our friendly team are excited to help you plan where to visit, what to see and what is fresh for you to explore.
Spring in the Hunter Valley offers so much in the way of things to see and do, with warmer weather bringing with it the excitement of a new season. It is a great time to experience glorious gardens, magnificent views, and explore the range of activities the Hunter Valley has to offer. The stage is set for new activities that are sure to delight.
Lush and Lavish Greenery
In Spring, the winter dormancy of the vines ends with an exciting array of new growth. Green spurts of energy spell the start of the new season, and the emergence of the next year’s crop. In the vineyards, the buds are breaking with added vigour brought on by warmer weather and spring rain showers. Visiting our region during early September may afford you the luxury of seeing early bursting varieties such as Chardonnay while other grape varieties are yet to wake.

Kelman Vineyard has been producing high quality classic Hunter varietals since 1999. James Halliday awarded the 2016 Shiraz 93 points and this new 2017 release lives up to the promise. Its bold flavours and structure make it an excellent match for hearty slow cooked beef or lamb dishes or a steak on the BBQ. Drinking well now and will cellar for up to 15 years.

In spring you will also see well-established cover crops growing in between the rows, which play an important role in bringing muchneeded nutrients to feed the vines for their next season of fruit. Much more than a Vineyard.
Spring Break Events
There is so much happening in the valley this Spring! We have a great range of information and are featuring some of the many events which are occurring during September including: • Spring Awakening – Warm yourself amongst flaming sculptures and be intrigued by interactive light installations. It begins with a lantern parade which departs from Cessnock Performing Arts Centre at 5.30pm on 7 September. • Broke Village Fair – The famous Vintage Car Display brings all sorts of vintage and classic cars, motorbikes, trucks and tractors and an amazing array of vintage farm machinery on 9 September at McNarama Park, Broke. • End2End Festival – Hop on and off the End2End shuttle bus at any of the four Pokolbin venues throughout the day, relax with a glass of wine while listening to some tunes and indulging in fantastic food on 15th September. • Springtime in the Gardens – in full bloom with the Festival of Flowers happening every day in September, daily talks, flowering sculptures and 20 wheelbarrow displays at Hunter Valley Gardens! • AirVenture Australia – The Great Aussie Fly-in, is landing at Cessnock Aerodrome this September for a high energy airshow between 20-22 September! Spring also offers the beginning of a renewed concert season, with international acts and music festivals. September kicks off with Wollombi Music Festival, Dashville Skyline and Sax Blue saxophone quartet leading the headlines.
Parish of Pokolbin in the Spotlight
Each month the Centre highlights a different precinct within the Hunter Valley. In September we highlight all the great experiences that the Parish of Pokolbin has to offer. Parish of Pokolbin was the focal point of the Hunter Valley when the parish boundaries were established in the 1880’s. The Hunter Valley is the oldest continuous viticulture area in Australia, and the Parish of Pokolbin forms the wine heritage heart of the Hunter Valley, combining an exclusive group of boutique familyowned wineries, a wide range of accommodation and dining options.
Our Matilda range is made up of easy drinking styles that are produced for your enjoyment.
