As you drive down Halls Road towards The Convent, you’d certainly be forgiven for thinking the magnificent two-storey colonial homestead had stood at the end of its imposing tree-lined driveway for more than a century. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find that the guests who stay within her 17 lavish rooms aren’t the only ones who have been on a journey, with the grand timber building having been built in 1909 to house a small community of Irish-born Catholic nuns in Coonamble. These days, The Convent is a much loved and award-winning luxury guesthouse and wedding venue in the heart of Pokolbin, fondly regarded as the Grande Old Dame of the Hunter Valley. Read more about the building’s fascinating history on page 16. While locals (and plenty of visitors too) know Matty and Jimmy Kerr as the welcoming faces behind the counter at Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen in Pokolbin, what they may not realise is that the

MEET THE MAKER UNIQUE LIVING DESIGNS WORDS Michelle Meehan It may have started as a thank you gift for her wedding guests, but three years down the track creating interesting succulent cacti creations has blossomed into a fully-fledged side business for Rushi Sirawardena. The Maryland physiotherapist, who is currently on maternity leave from her position at John Hunter Hospital, first planted the seed for her side project when she was busy planning her wedding in 2015. “I created little succulent wedding bonbonnieres for all our guests, and they looked absolutely stunning. This was the beginning of my ‘Growing Creations By Rushi’ adventure,” she said. “My business started as a hobby. I spent my free time creating my succulent logs and terrariums. About three months into it, I just knew this was a unique and, if I say so myself, amazing product. “In the background, my husband Frank and I were thinking of starting a family. I knew I had to come up with something creative to do when I’m on maternity leave … a productive way to spend ‘all my free time’ at home... Little did I know back then about ‘free time’ with a baby! “I knew I wanted to turn my hobby into a business. I created my brand in June 2015 and have not looked back since.”
Rushi’s range now includes stunning succulent and cacti logs, terrariums, kokedamas, succulent wreaths and dried flower logs, as well as her most recent additions - propagation test tube babies, emerald kokedamas and wall hangers. She said she loves creating new designs and the effect each creation can have on the space around it. “The main thing about any design has to be its uniqueness,” she said. “Each creation must be unique and make me stop and say ‘oh, I like how this turned out’. I am a hard taskmaster, so each creation has to impress me first. “I always aspire to do better and create new items people have not seen before or items that people wish they had in their home. “I think plants add so much love, texture and a sense of comfort to a house. They make it feel like home. They bring the outside in and softens up the concrete jungle we live in. “You can convert any little corner into a tranquil oasis with a few little plants.” Rushi has been selling her unique succulent and cacti creations at Handmade in the Hunter Markets since 2016. You can check out her latest efforts at this month’s markets, which will be held at Kevin Sobels Wines from 9am to 3pm on October 6, 13, 20 and 27.

The Grande Old Dame of the Hunter Cover Story
She’s one of the grande dames of the Hunter Valley vineyards, an imposing guesthouse with a heritage stretching back to the early 1900's. The Convent While these days The Convent is a much loved and award-winning luxury guesthouse and wedding venue in the heart of Pokolbin, the building’s foundation lies 109-years and 500km north-west of the Hunter in the tiny rural town of Coonamble. The grand timber building was built in 1909 to house a small community of Irish-born Catholic nuns, who had arrived in Coonamble 26 years earlier. The six Sisters had made the difficult journey from Ireland to Australia at the invitation of Bishop James Murray of the Diocese of Maitland, with the goal of setting up the first school run by the Brigidine Order in this country. While the Order soon began establishing schools in other parts of Australia and even in New Zealand, a contingent of sisters remained in Coonamble, with the boarding school continuing to operate until 1980. In the mid-1980s Sydney-based architectural firm Crawfords Architects became aware that The Convent was no longer being used by the Brigidine Sisters and was in danger of being demolished. Taken on as a joint project by Mike and Suzi O'Connor from Peppers Guest House, media magnate James Fairfax and Hunter Valley restaurateurs Robert and Sally Molines, the building was carefully dismantled ready for its relocation to the Hunter. Project notes recorded by Suzi O’Connor, who is also a noted interior designer, said it was love at first sight for The Convent. “We went to see it and fell in love!” she wrote. “It was a timber colonial building with wide verandahs, gorgeous windows, magnificent timber staircases and lots of original pressed metal in fabulous condition. “It could be a very special and unique Peppers hotel, so we offered to move it.” Few buildings of this size had ever been relocated long distances, with planning for the move a long and complicated affair. The first floor of the building was divided into two massive single storey sections, which were transported via large trucks to the Hunter. The sections were so large that a number of small bridges along the route had to be pulled down and rebuilt in order to accommodate the size of the trucks.
The second floor was taken apart completely, with each piece of timber and ever intricate detail carefully numbered and photographed so it could be reassembled perfectly before Suzi went to work styling it ready for guests. “Using photographs and the numbered pieces, the building was carefully reassembled in the Hunter Valley,” Suzi wrote. “There were 17 beautiful bedrooms all with ensuites, a gorgeous lounge with a massive fireplace, and a sunroom. “The decor was elegant French Provincial incorporating t'oilles, gilded mirrors, old marble consoles and Aubusson rugs on polished timber floors. “The pressed metal was re-used, and the pair of staircases on either side of the lounge were striking. Tapestry cushions on the sofas and masses of fresh flowers completed the look.” A grand reopening was held on October 27, 1991, with a commemorative plaque unveiled thanking the Brigidine Sisters for enabling the building’s restoration to take place. With the addition of a tennis court, swimming pool and spa with cabana, The Convent complex represented a stunning mix of five-star luxury and historically-significant architectural beauty. (Continued) The site also included the newly opened Murray Robson Winery owned by Murray and Lynley Robson, and the fine dining experience of Roberts Restaurant, which was created by Robert and Sally Molines in an historic 1876-built ironbark cottage once owned and lived in by the Robsons. A separate main dining room was added in 1995, with the name changed in 2015 to Circa 1876, eight years after the departure of Robert Molines. The Convent has changed hands many times over the years, becoming part of The Tower Estate Group before being purchased by former Newscorp Australia boss and ex-RM Williams chairman Ken Cowley and his family in 2010. In 2016 the property was placed on the market once again, this time snapped up by the Escarpment Group, who took over both The Convent and Circa 1876 in September that year.
The experienced luxury accommodation provider is renowned for its premium boutique collection of properties in the Blue Mountains, including the only five-star hotel in the area (Lilianfels Resort & Spa) and the world famous Hydro Majestic Hotel at Medlow Bath. Escarpment Group director Huong Nguyen said The Convent was a fine addition to their property portfolio. “The Convent and Circa 1876 are icons of the Hunter Valley and are well positioned to optimise the growing interest in regional tourism,” she said. “Both are steeped in history and are symbolic of the vision and passion of the pioneers of hospitality/tourism investments in the Hunter region. “I think its most striking features are the architecture of the Convent building along with its romantic history, its imposing yet graceful stance and the tree-lined driveway to remind you that you are arriving at an iconic guesthouse that was once home to six pioneering nuns. “You can’t replicate such history and its wonderful combination of luxury boutique accommodation and regional fine dining.” Since taking the reins at the Hunter icon, the Escarpment Group has commenced a “soft refurbishment” of its rooms with new carpets, paint works, lighting, landscaping and gardening. But there is plenty more in store as part of their plans to refresh the wider complex, with both physical projects and exciting new events in the works. “In the next 12 months we plan to upgrade the existing bathrooms, pool/barbecue area and relaxation lounges to facilitate more relaxed prefunction and conference events at The Convent,” Huong said. “Other activities that we are planning for the next 12-18 months at both The Convent and Circa 1876 include more intimate events for our guests such as degustation dinners accompanied with fine wine and music; and having performers from Australian Opera and SSO classical and various jazz artists perform at Convent. ►

The grounds of Circa 1876
“Also, we are planning to host cooking classes at Circa 1876 with a menu that incorporates the kitchen gardens and embraces executive chef Trent Barrett’s skill in harnessing nature and optimising fresh seasonal produce.” Trent is the latest in a long line of outstanding chefs who have been in command of the kitchens at Circa 1876 and Restaurant Eighty Eight, which is located in The Convent building itself, following in the footsteps of its founder and icon Robert Molines, as well as renowned chef and Restaurant Eighty Eight founder George Francisco. Trent joined the team at the Pokolbin venues in 2014 as chef de cuisine before taking over the culinary reins in May 2015. Most of the produce is grown on site in their 100 per cent organic garden, with the rest of the ingredients sourced from within a 50km radius of the property. “Circa 1876 offers modern Australian cuisine – combining classical techniques with new influences that showcases the flavours and textures of the region’s finest produce,” Huong said. “Our chef’s paddock-to-plate philosophy is evident in the kitchen gardens and a seasonal menu that uses Australian native herbs and plants.” Huong said Trent’s focus on creating seasonal-based menus with local ingredients had proven very successful, with the restaurant winning a string of awards and accolades, as well as being awarded an Australian Good Food Guide chef’s hat in 2016. Its most recent accolade came just last month when it was crowned the 2018 NSW Regional Restaurant of the Year and Regional Contemporary Australian Restaurant (formal) at the prestigious Restaurants and Catering Industry Association Australia awards. “People are wanting a truly immersive experience when they travel to regional areas, and that includes a ‘taste’ of the region,” she said.
“Our ability to harness the seasons, celebrate local produce and interpret our natural surrounds is essential to offering guests that unique experience, and our Executive Chef Trent does a wonderful job of that. The Convent itself has had its own fair share of awards glory over the years, including picking up the Regional Superior Hotel of the Year gong at the Tourism Accommodation Australia awards in July. Huong said it was the complete package offered by the historic property that helped set it apart. “It’s an authentic piece of Australian history that has been adapted to a luxury country guesthouse experience unique to the region,” she said. You can find The Convent, Restaurant Eight Eight and Circa 1876 on Halls Road, Pokolbin. ■

MISSION
At Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen! WORDS Michelle Meehan
Matty and Jimmy Kerr aren’t afraid to think big. For most people, throwing in their corporate careers to move to a new region and open their own restaurant is a large enough leap of faith. But three years after the couple swapped the cramped city surrounds of Sydney for the rolling hillsides of the Hunter; the Kerrs have their sights set on a far grander plan: to have Kerr’s Organic become Australia’s most recognisable organic brand. While locals and visitors alike know Matty and Jimmy as the welcoming faces behind the counter at Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen in Pokolbin, what they may not realise is that the charming 100-seat eatery is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their organic-based dreams. The pair are on a mission to transform Australia’s health and wellness through organic lifestyle experiences, a journey that began in 2015 with their decision to open Nanna’ Kerr’s Kitchen. ►

V I NEYARD
Boutique Hunter Win es
Kelman Vineyard has been producing high quality classic Hunter varietals since 1999. Awarded 4 1/2 stars in the James Halliday Wine Companion 2019 with 7 wines at 90 points and above. The 2016 Shiraz earned 93 points and this new 2017 release lives up to the promise. Its bold flavours and structure make it an excellent match for hearty slow cooked beef or lamb dishes or a steak on the BBQ. Drinking well now and will cellar for up to 15 years. Offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere reminiscent of the real Nanna Kerr’s house in Gunnedah, the restaurant serves wholesome, homemade food, made with love, using as much organic and local produce as possible. Nanna Kerr’s has now firmly cemented its place in the region’s vibrant restaurant scene, and while Jimmy said it had been a rollercoaster ride to get to this point, there’s been more highs than lows in the journey so far. “We celebrated three years of Nanna Kerr's in August,” he said. “Total rollercoaster of a journey but we think we've learnt enough now to plan a bigger, better future. “I’m back in the kitchen as Head Chef with a signature menu that celebrates local, gluten-free and vegan. Matty continues to lead the front of house experience ensuring that everyone gets a dose of traditional country hospitality.” The restaurant is open for brunch, lunch and high teas seven days a week, with a menu of “really wholesome, healthy food that tastes indulgent”.
“Our menu is 100 per cent pesticide free and on a good week is up to 95 per cent organic.” “The kitchen garden continues to grow, and this year we’ve served up cauliflower, sprouts, chilli, celery and an array of herbs and flowers grown on site to diners,” Jimmy said. “Our specials menu has a ‘once it's gone, it's gone’ approach to ensure that we are using as much local fruit and vegetables as we can and honouring the seasons. “We are also working with Little Hill Farm, Merrifield Farm, Hunter Natural and the Newcastle Fisherman's Co-operative for all our proteins. “As active members of Hunter Valley Slow Food, our menu is all about being good, clean and fair. We are also experimenting with vegan options as there is a huge crossover between that community and the organic community. “Big hits are our vegan and gluten-free sticky date, and ginger coconut custard along with gluten-free gnocchi and our vegan cheese board, which is all created on the premises.” Jimmy said the biggest growth area for the restaurant so far has been through private dining bookings. “We are closed to the public in the evening but available for functions for as little as 12 people,” he said. “As a family-friendly spot, we often have a 40th birthday dinner booked on a Saturday night that sees a few prams, toddlers and even childminders joining the party. (Continued) “We don't have a set menu, so it's pretty special for the client being able to work with us to design their own dinner, and it’s the only ‘on grass’ outdoor dining space right next to the vines in the valley, which is very special indeed.” But Matty and Jimmy haven’t just been working on expanding their clientele of diners at Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen. Kerr’s Organic is a multi-faceted business that also includes an organic condiments range, a private dining and pop-up restaurant service (feast.), and party-in-a-box kits for both adults and children’s parties (Party Pax), all delivered with the distinctive Kerr’s Organic style.
The Kerrs’ wide range of delicious organic jams, relishes and chutneys are available via their online store and are stocked in a number of retail outlets. The vegan range of products is made with 100 per cent Australian organic fruits and vegetables in a nut-free environment and contains around 60 per cent less sugar than most other products on the market. “Our condiments range is now stocked in more than a dozen Hunter retailers along with national health food website Inner Origin,” Jimmy said. “Since May we have sold almost three tonnes of relish, chutney and jam all made with certified organic fruit and vegetables. Tastings and sales are seven days at the restaurant. “Feast. is our pop-up and private dining business and it is growing fast. Initially focused on catering in private holiday homes for visitors to the Hunter we have now also been to Melbourne and Perth. “In September we also catered Lake Macquarie's inaugural Dinner Under the Stars for their annual Sustainable Living Festival.” Jimmy said Feast. has a number of exciting catering jobs coming up, including Macquariedale Organic Wines’ new release winemaker’s dinner on October 13 (at Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen), and Not the Cup: A cruelty-free/ vegan evening for 300 guests at 48 Watt Street that was being organised to raise funds for the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses. If all this wasn’t enough, Jimmy said he and Matty were also working on a new project to establish an organic produce farm in the Hunter Valley. Despite a couple of false starts, the couple is hoping to create a crowdfunding campaign for the project that would “involve the local community and the organic community nationally”, with the aim of being able to deliver on the paddock to plate philosophy “in a very special way”. ■

Winners are Grinners! Restaurants and Wineries Winning Top Awards It’s no secret that the Hunter is home to some of the most creative and edgy restaurants making their presence felt on the national and regional culinary stage, with the much-celebrated hatted trio of Muse Restaurant, Muse Kitchen and Bistro Molines leading the way. WORDS Quentin von Essen
Hot on their heels are a mix of both new and established venues that include Circa 1876, Hunters Quarter, Nanna Kerr’s, Baume, EXP. Restaurant, RidgeView Restaurant, Esca Bimbadgen, The Cellar Restaurant and The Verandah Restaurant - to mention a few, and they are all taking dining excitement to the next level. The Hunter’s reputation as a wine and food region is unsurpassed, a fact that has been embraced by Australian and international visitors alike, and there is nothing hotter right now than some of our award-winning restaurants and wines. At the recent Restaurants & Catering Industry Association Australia (R&CA) awards, more than 335 local restaurants, cafes and catering businesses gathered to celebrate the achievements of their peers who were judged over 67 categories, with the winners announced at the Awards for Excellence ceremony held in Sydney last month. Seven Hunter restaurants received awards at this prominent event, five of which are in the Hunter Valley Pokolbin area with the remaining two restaurants based in Newcastle.

Circa 1876
The R&CA Awards for Excellence is a nationally recognised, independently judged awards program that recognises exceptional service and culinary talent in restaurants, cafes, takeaway and catering businesses across Australia. The Awards for Excellence is the only program in Australia where the judging criteria are determined by consumers who rank what is important to them in the dining experience. Having received rave reviews since opening its doors and kitchen a year ago, Baumé at Ben Ean, Lindeman's estate, was awarded Best New Regional Restaurant at the prestigious award ceremony – providing more credence to the fact that some of Australia's best eating out this year has been beyond the metro limits, in regional restaurants offering incredible experiences unique to their surrounds. Baumé has been nothing if not busy since industry stalwarts Colin Peterson and Brian McGuigan purchased the re-named Ben Ean, Lindeman's estate in 2017 with the view to preserving its place in the region’s winemaking history and create an exciting new future for the historic venue. Another restaurant cementing its culinary reputation in the region, Circa 1876 at Pokolbin has added two further gongs to its cache after being crowned 2018 NSW Regional Restaurant of the Year and Regional Contemporary Australian Restaurant (formal). During the past three years, Circa 1876 executive chef Trent Barrett and his team have won NSW Best Regional Restaurant (fine dining) twice and was named Best Restaurant Caterer (weddings) for three consecutive years in the R&CIAA awards. Baumé at Ben Ean
Also, this year The Convent boutique hotel property which includes Circa 1876, has taken out the 2018 Regional Superior Hotel of the Year at the Tourism Accommodation Australia Awards for Excellence and was a finalist in the same category at the Australian Hotels Association for Excellence. Barrett thanked his team of chefs and wait staff for contributing to the success of the iconic venue and said the sustainable use of seasonal produce grown in the onsite vegetable garden, helped set the restaurant apart. "It’s a great honour and very rewarding to play a part in such an iconic and historical property located in an amazing food and wine region," he said. Another Pokolbin based restaurant, Esca, Bimbadgen was awarded Best NSW Regional Restaurant in a Winery and Best NSW Regional Tourism Restaurant. Other awards went to Il Cacciatore Restaurant which won Best Regional Italian Restaurant and Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley which took home Best NSW Regional Caterer of the Year.

And the results keep coming. For well over 100 years, the Hunter Valley has been recognised internationally for the quality and distinct regional characteristics of its premium wines as well as the superb skills of the winemakers creating them. The region has also been home to countless legends of the industry that include Karl Stockhausen, Hans Mollenhauer and Maurice O’Shea the man credited as being the father of Australian table wine. There are also those winemakers whose enduring legacies helped shape the reputation of the region – winemakers such as Len Evans, Max Lake and the late Murray Tyrrell, and those who continue to make their mark on the industry today such as Ian Scarborough, Jay Tulloch, John Drayton, Chris Barnes, Phil Ryan, Brian McGuigan, Neil McGuigan, Kevin Sobels and Bruce Tyrrell. Bryan Currie of Dalwood Estate
The Riverina Winemakers Association hosted a series of wine show awards at a single gala event in Griffith in September, including the Tumbarumba Wine Show, Australian Italian Varieties and the Australian Sweet Wine Challenge, to name a few. Currie won three gold, two silver and four bronze medals for wines predominantly from his first vintage in the Hunter (2017). But what makes one of those wins particularly sweet for the accomplished winemaker was that it also offered a link to a past career highlight. “Winning the Australian Italian Varieties Wine gold medal for the Hungerford Hill 2017 Fiano was a great moment for me,” Currie said. In 2006, Currie worked directly with the same grape variety in Southern Italy, during his time living in one of the country’s most famous wine-growing regions in the hills above Naples. “I love the grape (Fiano), it creates wine that suits our lifestyle. It matches well with oysters or pasta and basically does what a Semillon or Riesling can do, but with more flavour.” The recent medal haul adds to a host of accolades including a gold medal win in the Australian National Single Vineyard Wine Show for the Hungerford Hill 2017 Epic Hunter Valley Shiraz. Not to mention a recent nod to his career accomplishments with a nomination for the prestigious Winemaker of the Year title – the winner to be announced at a gala ceremony in November
The New South Wales Wine Awards But following in the footsteps of these giants is a growing list of innovative and highly talented winemakers who are injecting new life and flavours into the market and helping shape the future of the industry in the Hunter Valley and winning countless awards. One such winemaker is Bryan Currie - senior winemaker at Dalwood Estate, Sweetwater Estate and Hungerford Hill and also Winemaker of the Year finalist, who once again wowed judges picking up nine medals at regional wine shows in September.
The NSW Wine Awards were created in 1996 to build awareness of the quality of wines produced in NSW. Since inception, the Awards have become an indicator of the growth and diversity of the NSW wine industry and the potential of new regions within New South Wales. Unlike traditional wine shows, the judges of the New South Wales Wine Awards taste wines of similar style regardless of the size of the producer, allowing large and small wineries to compete against each other. ►

For Tamburlaine Organic Wines, the results were just as outstanding winning six gold medals awarded to 6 reds amongst its total medal tally. The six varietals with gold medals included Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec.
Tyrrells Vineyard
At the recent annual NSW Wine Awards held in the Southern Highlands between 11th and 13th September, the vigorous judging process, saw 16 expert judges from across Australia taste a record number of nearly 900 wines over three days, resulting in 402 medal winning wines, of which 51 were gold medal winners. Of the gold medal winning wines, 27 of them were from the Hunter Valley - raising anticipation of who will be awarded one of the top Trophies at the Awards Presentation on 19 October at Government House in Sydney. Chair of Judges Dave Brookes confirmed, “The medal results shine a light on the state’s diversity of wine styles and the quality of a pleasing run of excellent vintages. Current release Rieslings from Canberra and Mudgee were a highlight as were the Shiraz releases from a number of regions, from classic medium-weight Hunter Valley to funky-edged whole-bunch wines. Chardonnay continues to be on a roll with pristine

"These awards are an exposé of the best NSW has to offer, and top medals for our wines from both our Hunter and Orange vineyards is an endorsement to our focus on organic viticulture over the past fifteen years." – Tamburlaine Managing Director, Mark Davidson. The 160 years old Tyrrell's family wine company also have reason to celebrate - winning five gold medals for their 2013 and 2014 Vat 1 Semillon, 2013 Belford Semillon, 2015 Vat 47 Chardonnay and 2017 Belford Chardonnay. Brokenwood Wines took home two gold medals with their Brokenwood Wines 2018 Semillon and 2013 Stanleigh Park Semillon. First Creek Wines also took home two gold with the 2018 Winemakers Reserve Semillon and 2017 Single Vineyard Murphys Semillon as did Mount Pleasant Wines for their 2017 High Paddock Shiraz and 2017 Old Paddock & Old Hill Shiraz – a wine steeped in heritage. Other noteworthy gold medal winners were Thomas Wines for their 2013 Cellar Reserve Braemore Semillon and Silkman Wines for the 2017 Reserve Chardonnay. ■
