There are some places I discover, practically in my own backyard, that remind me to get out and look around, explore the areas you think you already know.
Lake County’s Six Sigma Winery was a big wake-up call in all of the best ways. This beautiful 4,300-acre property was the family home for Russell Rustici, the son of the man who founded a major San Francisco produce market. Mr. Rustici was growing older but feeling no pressure to sell his magnificent ranch until Danish GE executive Kaj Ahlmann decided to look north after already investigating properties in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino. When Kaj saw the pastures, hills and woodlands, he was enthralled and the idea of building Six Sigma Ranch and Winery took root.
Now celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Six Sigma produces 3,000-4,000 cases of wine annually with plans to scale up to 10,000. Growing on about 50 acres, Kaj and his wife, Else, worked with UC Davis, planting sensors throughout the vineyards to plant the best varietals for each vineyard plot. Currently, Six Sigma grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Tempranillo, the latter reflecting the couple’s passion for Spanish wines. Although most of the winery’s grapes are sold to other vintners, enough is held back for a thriving wine program that supports Six Sigma’s 900 winery members, visitors from the Bay Area and around the world, and locals who take advantage of the ranch events, hikes and ranch-to-table dinners.
Examples of how Six Sigma entertains their fellow wine and food lovers includes monthly Paella nights, wine and cheese pairings, guided mountain bike or hiking trail rides and plenty of ways to weave the bounty of the farm and ranch into winemaking and wine-enjoying activities. In the next couple months alone, Six Sigma’s 20th Anniversary commences with regular culinary pop-ups and concerts, including a Filipino food truck pop-up, wine and pizza pop-up, Austin and Owens concerts and maybe even dining and dancing under the stars … and there are quite the amazing stars in the skies above the ranch!
One of the best ways to experience the stars and all of the bounty of the ranch (did I mention the 75 head of Angus Beef cattle that make up the ranch’s meats program, available in the tasting room or at ranch dinners) is to stay a night or two at Six Sigma in either an RV you bring as a member of the Harvest Host program or at Huttopia, a European glamping concept with only 7 camps in North America, the newest being Six Sigma’s Wine Country locale. Huttopia glamping at Six Sigma has exploded in popularity and now consists of 100 glamping tents, 80 of which have their own private baths, a swimming pool, bistro, market and more. Open mid-April through November 11th, Huttopia at Six Sigma is the ultimate wine country experience. Drink and dine on the ranch where your wine and food is raised, hike miles of mountain trails or mountain bike the same and similar trails, sleep under stars so bright the sky's alight, dream well and wake to another day in paradise.
Other remarkable facets of the Six Sigma Ranch are the ways in which the Ahlmann family have become involved and are giving back to the local community. With a local high school vice principal leading the effort, a group of students have planted 5000 lavender plants as a part of Jack’s Lavender Farm, then harvest the flowers and create soaps, sachets and oils that are sold at markets and in the Six Sigma tasting room, housed in a cabin at a historic stagecoach stop. Proceeds from the lavender will fund a part of these students’ college educations. A produce garden is being developed with the same intent and will sell to farm stands and restaurants as well as provide food for the ranch dining and Huttopia’s bistro.
The Six Sigma ranch also hosts the local high school’s mountain bike team and regional and statewide competitions that fully embrace the family’s efforts to make this winery totally family-friendly. With mountain biking as a focus, competitors and their families enjoy a weekend of racing, cooking, wine drinking and camaraderie. This welcoming whole family approach extends to every part of the ranch operations. Bring yourselves, your kids, your friends and your dogs. All are happily embraced at Six Sigma.
A visit to Six Sigma is not just a stop to taste wine, although the wines are absolutely beautiful. Drink in the vast beauty of the ranch, breathe and spend some time getting back to enjoying the simple things, albeit with a bit of good wine and food.

Chances are, if you have visited Napa Valley, you have driven on Highway 29, also known as the St. Helena Highway, passing by many wineries with names you recognize. Along the same stretch, you have also passed (or bypassed) Whitehall Lane Winery. So next time you visit Napa, make a point to stop, visit, and sip at Whitehall Lane Winery; you will be glad you did.
Whitehall Lane Winery doesn’t stand out and point at itself; rather, the building blends in subtly with its surroundings. The “low” rise structure, surrounded by vineyards and drought-tolerant plants, exudes an aura of relaxation and class. When you visit and taste their wines, you will experience “class in a glass.” The tasting room is welcoming and comfortable; as you enter and are warmly greeted, be prepared for an adventure in one of Napa’s earlier and award-winning wineries.
On a recent visit, our host RJ began by walking us through the winery, explaining the history and philosophy of Whitehall Lane.
RJ first handed us a glass of their recently bottled Petaluma Gap Rosé of Pinot Noir. It was crisp and elegant, displaying great acidity. It was made in the Provence style, previewing what would come as we visited this winery.
In 1979, two brothers purchased the vineyard land and built the winery, naming it after the street it borders.
They grew and produced Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. RJ explained that the area’s grape-growing history dates back to the 1800s, but by 1979, Napa was starting to be recognized on the world stage as a serious wine-producing area.
In 1993, the Leonardini family purchased the estate. Since then, the winery has been family-owned and run. It boasts a three-generation team committed to producing highquality wines. The company has garnered awards and recognition for its consistent quality.
As we toured through the production area, RJ continued to give us “bits” of information, making this a very personal experience:
• Winemaker Jason Moulton brings his vast expertise to Whitehall Lane, having made wine on six of the earth’s seven continents.
• RJ’s explanation of markings on the barrels, pointing out and explaining the symbols stamped on the end of each barrel, such as HT TV 18 (HT for the “toasting” designation, in this instance, HIGH toast, TV as an abbreviation for the forest designation where the oak tree was harvested from, and 18 as the year they received the barrel, so they know the lifespan of the barrel).
• RJ also pointed out the riddling rack used to produce their “method champenoise” sparkling wine,
explaining that each bottle is riddled or turned by hand several times each week.
History, education, passion, a stroll through the barrel room, and then wine tasting in the lounge! With a bit of knowledge (and knowledge of wine and history only enhanced the wine experience), it was time to take a run through several of Whitehall Lane’s delicious creations.
Gazing out at the vineyards surrounding us as RJ started to pour the wines added a sense of relaxing serenity. On a personal note, although you can say that Whitehall Lane is primarily a Cabernet house, their Malbec stood out for me. Layers of black fruit, with hints of cocoa and blueberry-smooth and elegant, with a lingering finish, this is one sexy wine! As we tasted, having a library selection poured was quite a treat: a 2014 Leonardini Vineyard Cabernet. Whenever you have the opportunity to explore a well-aged wine and compare it to a newer release, it shows not only the potential and age-ability of the wine but the quality. This is a testament to what you can expect from Whitehall Lane wines.
Depending on the time of year you visit, you may have an option of tasting in the welcoming tasting room, lounge, barrel room, or outside
• Napa Green Certified: Whitehall Lane follows strict sustainable farming practices.
• Whitehall Lane’s 1996 Merlot garnered significant attention from the “wine world,” firmly placing them “on the map.”
• In December of 1998, Whitehall Lane’s1995 vintage Reserve Cabernet placed #5 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 List
• In December of 2000, the 1997 Reserve Cabernet was named #3 on the Top 100
• In December of 2002, the 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, placed #5 on the Top 100
• Legacy: Three generations are working at Whitehall Lane: Tom Leonardini Sr., his daughter Katie (VPO), his son Tom II (VP National Sales), and his grandson Tom III (Cellar Master).
in the Malbec vineyard … surrounded by nature and beauty.
They say that wine is grown in the vineyard, which is true. However, from the vineyard workers up to bottling, the team’s love, passion, and dedication meld the passion into an exquisite liquid pleasure for you to enjoy “from grape to glass.”
Whitehall Lane Winery’s legacy is built on a commitment to producing elegant wines and offering superb hospitality. Raise a glass to the Leonardini family, Whitehall Lane Winery, and the years to come.

Here’s to the season between the seasons, when Napa Valley welcomes you in with bold, vibrant color.
As the tale is told, the first mustard plants arrived in the 1800s when Jesuit priests scattered seeds throughout Napa Valley. Today, visitors from around the globe flock to our premier wine country destination to enjoy this early-blooming crop, which famously ushers in a new growing season and blankets Napa Valley in swaths of vibrant yellow from January to March.

“We’re Turning 125!”
It began with just three words from Fernande de Latour: “Quel beau lieu!” That “beautiful place” was a 4-acre parcel in Napa Valley that would, under the expert guidance of Fernande and her husband Georges, change the landscape of California wine forever. 2025 is the 125th anniversary of that historic moment. In preparation for this year-long celebration, folks at BV have been combing the archives and reconnecting with family, friends, and team members to rediscover the people and happenings that made it all possible. Winery Celebrates 25th Anniversary with Extraordinary Chardonnay Created by Original and Current Winemakers
Celebrating his 25th harvest with his name on the side of the winery he started, Fritz Stuhlmuller felt he had to do something extraordinary. “In 1996, we established a small, artisan winery bearing the Stuhlmuller name, with Kerry Damskey as our first winemaker,” said Stuhlmuller.
“To celebrate the 25th winery anniversary of our winery, we decided to have Kerry and our current winemaker, Zac Childers, collaborate on a special vineyard designate Chardonnay.” With less than 90 cases of this special wine produced, it won’t be available long. At $75 for this caliber of wine, it remains affordable in the tradition of the Stuhlmuller family’s wine offerings. stuhlmullervineyards.com
Acclaimed Sonoma County artist Maxfield Bala created a 14' by 14' artwork adorning the cellar door at Papapietro Perry in Healdsburg that depicts the cherished winery saying, “Peace, Love & Pinot,” in a vintage postcard. Bala spent a number of weeks at the winery working on his latest creation, which traces Papapietro Perry’s journey from a humble garage in San Francisco to a picturesque site overlooking Dry Creek Valley. The scene is framed by a radiant valley sunset and clusters of Pinot Noir grapes. Petaluma-based Bala is known for his colorful murals around Sonoma County, including the Welcome to Petaluma sign, and his creative collaborations with a variety of companies and organizations around the world.
For a limited time Papapietro Perry is offering complimentary tastings to people who share a photo of the mural on social media! papapietro-perry.com

The Napa County Historical Society presents a series of exhibits telling a three-part story about Napa Valley’s beauty and how cultural pride and a sense of community have employed architecture, music, and art to amplify and enhance the valley from the earliest historic times right through to today. Presented in association with Napa County Landmarks which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, the exhibit explores the Valley through the lens of architecture, showcasing commercial, residential, educational, governmental, and sacred spaces that grace the landscapes of Napa. The Valley Beautiful: Music will follow in spring 2025 with an exploration of music’s role and impact on Napa Valley, and then the final exhibit, The Valley Beautiful: Art will explore how fine art and public art have captured, enhanced, and amplified the beauty of the valley. napahistory.org • napacountylandmarks.org
Todd Graff, Senior Winemaker and General Manager, recently announced the addition of Alicia Sylvester to the Frank Family team as Winemaker. In her role, Alicia helps Graff oversee all aspects of wine production at Frank Family Vineyards, from the vineyards to the cellar and the lab. Alicia supports Frank Family’s goal of producing estate driven wines from some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyard sites.
“Alicia joins Frank Family Vineyards with more than a decade of global winemaking experience working across a broad array of vineyards and wine styles,” says Graff. “She brings an immense passion for winemaking and an infectious ‘can-do anything’ attitude to our team and we’re lucky to have her.”
Prior to joining Frank Family Vineyards, Alicia spent nearly 10 years at Foley Family Wines. She was an Assistant Winemaker at Lancaster Estate in Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, then Head Winemaker at Merus Wines based in St. Helena, Napa Valley. Both of these roles honed her skills and knowledge of working with Cabernet Sauvignon. Most recently, she was Head Winemaker at Banshee Wines in Sonoma, where she worked with site-specific cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
“I have long admired Frank Family Vineyards and am excited to have the mentorship of longtime winemaker Todd Graff,” says Sylvester. “His dedication over the past two decades has been instrumental in shaping Frank Family’s reputation as a world-class producer and I look forward to working alongside him for many vintages to come.”
Alicia earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture business with a minor in wine and viticulture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Upon graduation, inspired by the diverse wine regions around the world, she worked harvests internationally, gaining invaluable knowledge from her experience in regions such as Australia, Italy, South Africa and Argentina. In 2013, Alicia returned to the U.S. and eagerly jumped into harvest at Chateau Montelena, where she proudly became the first woman to receive the “golden shovel” award since 1975, shoveling a total of 165 tons of grape must throughout harvest. The following year, she became a Chardonnay harvest enologist at Sonoma-Cutrer, focusing on crafting high-quality, terroir-driven Chardonnays. She later joined Foley Family Wines while simultaneously earning her wine certificate from University of California, Davis.
Born and raised in California, Alicia’s love for the state’s agriculture is rooted in her upbringing on her family’s almond farm and 20-acre Zinfandel vineyard in the Central Valley. Her early exposure to farming and involvement in 4-H fostered a strong work ethic and helped shape her career path to where she is now.

Friday Farm and Producer Tours, Saturday Pairing Seminars, Workshops, and Cheese Crawl, Sunday Artisan Cheese Tasting & Marketplace
California’s premier cheese festival, now making its 19th appearance, is a gala celebration produced by experts and educators from the world of artisan cheese. This three-day festival will offer attendees a wealth of informative and educational events along with opportunities to meet the Golden State’s cheesemaking community and to enjoy the full range of its products. Cheese lovers of all experience levels are welcome and can expect to be delighted.
This year’s festival starts on Friday, March 21 with Farm and Producer Tours at locations in Marin, Mendocino, and Sonoma counties. On Saturday, March 22, winery and brewery tasting rooms throughout Sonoma County will host seminars, a recital, and workshops. Saturday evening will bring the return of the Cheese Crawl at The Barlow in Sebastopol. The Festival culminates on Sunday, March 23 with the Artisan Cheese Tasting & Marketplace, a grand finale tasting event at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. Tickets are now on sale and selling quickly.
“We are thrilled at the way the program for the Festival has come together,” says Candace Allen, California Artisan Cheese Guild Vice President and California Artisan Cheese Festival Committee member. “This year we have opportunities to go behind the scenes at renowned local cheesemakers, farms and beverage makers. Exciting new experiences include a cheese and classical vocal recital, a cheesemaking demo, and much more. The Festival will be a true celebration of the best of California cheese and the makers!”
Valerie Miller, Executive Director of the California Artisan Cheese Guild adds, “Last year, over 2,000 cheese lovers from 28 states and four countries, including the US, Mexico, Canada, and Indonesia, attended at least one event. What could be better for a turophile than spending three days in Sonoma County learning all about cheese and taking home that knowledge, and cheese, to share?”
The Festival, which began in March 2007, has grown into three days of cheese tasting, education, and celebration that brings together California’s premier cheesemakers and offers cheese enthusiasts of all experience levels an unparalleled opportunity to learn about, taste and purchase new, limited-production, and rare artisan cheeses. Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood just off the beaten path, this hidden gem is bursting with positive energy. Mismatched dishes and thrifted coffee mugs with kitchsy sayings are highlights of the space which is open and bright, festooned with colorful paintings and a cheerful vibe.
Owner Trina Madrigal insists on as much “from-scratch” as possible with an emphasis on fresh ingredients. While decisions are often difficult, customer favorites include breakfast standbys like huevos rancheros served in a homemade tortilla bowl with both roja and tomatillo salsa as well as scrambles, omelets and Benedicts, or “bennies,” including a keto version served on ham and veggies rather than an English muffin. For lunch, the grilled chicken sandwich on homemade focaccia with pesto aioli is a big hit. Or, try the Petite burger which comes topped with all the fixings.
“This is really my dream come true,” said Madrigal. “I’m excited that locals come by to check out what’s new or different. We take pride in getting to know our customers whether they are locals or visitors and providing great food in a fun and relaxing environment.”
Stop by Petite Soleil and discover a fun, neighborly café that might just be your new favorite.

Many wineries have bocce courts for their visitors’ enjoyment. Becase the game is played between two players or two teams of one, two, or four, it lends itself well to hanging out with friends at the winery as part of your total winery adventure. Be sure to check ahead. Some courts require reservations and/or fees. If you have your own balls, Veterans’ Park in Yountville or Crane Park in St. Helena have bocce courts available when leagues are not in play.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Northern California, Lake County offers a hidden gem for wine enthusiasts. Clear Lake, after which the area is named, is America’s largest natural lake, dating back about 2-1/2 million years. Mount Konocti (a dormant volcano) rises majestically over the landscape. Boasting a diverse terroir with volcanic soil and ample sunshine, the region fosters the perfect conditions for grape cultivation, particularly for varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Petite Sirah.
As you embark on your tasting adventure, you'll encounter a spectrum of flavors unique to the region: bold reds with rich berry notes, crisp whites with hints of citrus and minerality, and robust blends that reflect the rugged charm of the countryside. Winemakers are often on hand to share their insights, offering a glimpse into their craft and the intricacies of winemaking.
Wine tasting in Lake County is a sensorial journey where each sip tells a story of the land and the passion of its makers.
Thorn Hill Vineyards is the perfect place to stay while exploring Lake County. The elegant Tuscanstyle villa is in the middle of the vineyards. On one side of the Thorn Hill Tasting Room, there are two beautifully appointed private suites. Unwind in the shared living, dining, and kitchen space (well stocked with snacks and breakfast items). This is the perfect getaway accommodation for two couples to share. On the opposite side of the Villa, is a private single suite. Sleep in, enjoy the country quiet, make yourself a fresh breakfast, then walk about 20 steps for your relaxed tasting in the adjacent room, before you go out to explore more of Lake County.
Savor Amy Thorn’s award-winning, small-lot, boutique wines, both whites and reds. And don’t go home without a few bottles of Thorn Hill’s sparkling wine, and their elegant dessert wines.
Langtry Farms, and Winery has a romantic, storied history. Lillie Langtry, (b. 1853 on the Isle of Jersey) was a famous British actress and socialite, performing both in England and the United States. In 1888, seeing an ad in a local publication, Lilly purchased a 4,200-acre ranch, founding Langtry Winery, which she owned for 18 years.
The modern-day operation began with the initial 1982 vintage, they have been producing awardwinning wines ever since. Whereas mostly Bordeaux varieties are grown, Langtry also grows, Merlot, Petite Verdot, Petite Sirah, Sauvignon Blanc (named Langtry Lillie), and Chardonnay.
The Shannon Mercantile They have it all! A local gathering place to sample estate wines and purchase locally raised grass-fed lamb from their ranch (all cuts of meat, ready to cook and serve). Enjoy ongoing events! Taco Tuesday, Friday Night Pizza, Saturday Farmer’s Market, Sunday Funday with games and food!
Nestled amidst the rolling hills east of Clear Lake, Brassfield Estate Winery stands as a testament to the region’s winemaking prowess. Boasting breathtaking vistas and a commitment to sustainable practices, Brassfield offers more than just exceptional wine — it provides an unforgettable experience. Visitors are invited to explore the lush vineyards, savoring the nuances of the terroir, while enjoying a tasting flight of their acclaimed wines, from crisp Sauvignon Blancs to robust Cabernet Sauvignons.
Six Sigma Ranch , simply put, is a one-stop shop for your wine, lodging, and outdoor adventure fun. Wines are from estate-grown grapes, (including Tempranillo, planted more than 20 years ago), and are small-lot, elegant, and available mainly through the winery. Stay under the stars in one of Six Sigma’s 100 Huttopia glamping units, upscale and completely offgrid. Or, bring your RV to camp out if you prefer. Hike and Bike, on more than 14 miles of trails. Take a Pinzgauer Vineyard tour, savor a ranch-to-table private lunch or dinner.
When in Kelseyville, you have to eat at Saw Shop Public House! Their motto is “Welcome to our house—everyone is local, and locals are family.” The food here will blow you away. It’s good, fun, tasty and friendly. On The Waterfront Restaurant in Lakeport is a modern eatery with a globally inspired, progressive menu of original dishes meant to be shared. The fresh and ever-changing seasonal menu is designed to tantalize your senses with a fusion of flavors, complemented by wine, to deliver an unforgettable experience. At the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake, the atmosphere exudes a warm, inviting charm that makes it a local favorite. The rustic wooden interiors, adorned with vintage photographs and eclectic memorabilia, create a nostalgic ambiance that perfectly complements the hearty comfort food on the menu. Another local favorite is Red's at the Skyroom in Lakeport. Relax and watch the small planes fly in and out while enjoying traditional comfort food like fish and chips, specialty burgers, fried chicken sandwich or Uncle Gary’s Pot Roast Sandwich. But the twist? Oysters and sushi! Greenview Restaurant is another delicious option, located on the Hidden Valley Lake Golf Course.
