B.C. WINE COUNTRY
During your visit to British Columbia Wine Country, seize the opportunity to explore one or more vineyards on your stops to local wineries. As you walk between the rows of vines, take in your surroundings. Study the slope of the vineyard, and the angle of the sun. Examine the soil in which the grapes are growing. Rub the dirt between your fingers to get an appreciation for its type and texture. This might seem like a peculiar thing to do, but these simple things often dictate a vineyard’s fortune. It’s what wine authorities call “terroir” - the connection between a vineyard’s soil, geology, topography, climate and microclimate, microbes, neighboring vegetation and the grape variety. And when all the elements come together, they can create something truly special. The best wines are made in the vineyard, not the lab. Wines should combine the magic of terroir and the ethereal sense of place and time. Some might not care about all these details, but more and more enthusiasts are asking questions about where the grapes come from and how they grow. Many are intrigued if you tell them about a particular area, the story around the wine and how it came to be. It helps them form a better connection with the bottle they are drinking. It means more to them, especially if they’ve been to that place themselves and seen where the grapes grow. British Columbia is unique with its varied microclimates and it shows up in the glass. There are pretty significant changes in the soils, climate and temperatures across the province. You can even taste the difference in wines that are grown and produced on different vineyards in the same appellation. In fact, one of the trends in B.C. grape growing today is single vineyard production, meaning the grapes all come from one site. With a single vineyard, all blending options are off. That means if you have a cooler growing season, you don’t have the choice of blending riper grapes from a hotter part of the region with fruit that comes from a cooler pocket. Vintners have to get it right in those particular vineyards or they don’t have a wine. But for the consumer, those winning years often mean an extra special something in the glass. British Columbia’s vineyards are also coming of age. Many vintners can boast that their grapes come from vines planted two, three even four decades earlier and this age provides some complexities and nuances to the wine you often can’t get from young vines. But while the vineyards are becoming more mature, so are the people tending to them. They have a better understanding of how a site will perform under certain conditions because they have experience with it. Mother Nature has thrown plenty of curve balls in winemakers’ directions over the years and they now know what needs to be done to get a ripe crop off when she’s being particularly ill tempered. There are more than 10,000 acres of planted grapes in British Columbia, comprised of 80-plus varieties, compared to 2,100 acres two decades ago. And the ratio of red to white is 51 to 49 per cent, with the top planted red being Merlot and the top planted white being Pinot Gris. However, there are an abundance of crisp and aromatic whites, luscious Icewines, assorted dessert wines and a generous flow of ripe and juicy reds. What is grown depends on the location. The province’s wine production is diversified, thanks to its varied terrains and microclimates unique to the various growing pockets. In the North Okanagan, Fraser Valley, Lower Mainland and Gulf Islands, where the climate is tempered, you’ll find more aromatic and lighter whites and reds grown, such as Riesling, Pinot Gris, Ehrenfelser, Ortega, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Marechal Foch. In the hotter, drier Central and South Okanagan, where the majority of B.C.’s wine grapes are grown, you get into the more lush whites and intense, fullbodied reds, such as Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Malbec, and even Zinfandel. You may favour a particular variety or style, but the wineries may surprise you with their approach to a particular grape, signature style or a unique blend. Keep an open mind and an open palate. You won’t be disappointed. 4

HARVEST 2015
B.C. LIQUOR LAWS
The growing season of 2015 is being referred to as the Vintage of the Century in British Columbia.
On April 1, 2015, changes came into effect in British Columbia permitting the sale of B.C. wine in grocery stores.
It was a season to remember for most vintners with long, hot, dazzling sunny days - just the kind of stuff grapes love. What made it extra special is the fact that the magnificent weather started very early in the spring and did not let up until well into the fall. The month of July was the second warmest in history. The outstanding weather led to a record-breaking start to the harvest in B.C. Picking usually begins in September or even October, but last year most wineries started collecting the fruit two to three weeks ahead of schedule. The first grapes for table wine picked in the South Okanagan were Sauvignon Blanc by Jackson-Triggs winery in Oliver on August 20. It was a week ahead of the 2013 vintage, the previous earliest harvest ever. In the Similkameen, Orofino winery began its harvest of white grapes such as Chardonnay, Muscat and Pinot Gris on August 24 and red grapes such as Gamay and Pinot Noir on August 28. In Creston, which is outside of B.C.’s designated viticultural areas, Baillie-Grohman winery reported that it started picking on August 28, nearly a month ahead of 2014. Meanwhile just east of Kamloops, Monte Creek winery began pulling fruit off its young vines on August 19 and began pressing red grapes on August 31. Vista D’oro in the Fraser Valley also reported its earliest harvest, starting on August 28 with the estate Maréchal Foch. The 2015 growing season was not without its challenges. Dry, hot weather contributes to one of the biggest stressors wineries have to face – the threat of forest fires. While no wineries or vineyards were lost, hills surrounding wineries in Oliver and Osoyoos burned following lightning strikes in mid-August and made for some extremely tense moments. Local producers took to social media and tweeted regular updates about any imminent threats, eventually allying fears over possible damage from the flames or smoke taint. In keeping with the early theme to the growing season, Mother Nature also delivered an early opportunity for vintners to pick grapes for Icewine. Sub-zero temperatures ideal for the harvesting of the frozen grapes arrived on November 26, allowing six wineries to bring in an Icewine crop. This was the third consecutive year B.C.’s Icewine harvest has started as early as November and is welcome by vintners.

This new law has been long anticipated by consumers who endorse the concept of the one-stop shop – pick up ingredients for dinner and purchase a bottle of wine to go with it. It’s just one of the sweeping changes to liquor laws in the province in recent years. For visitors to B.C. Wine Country, some of the things they can look forward to include the tasting and sale of B.C. wines at local farmer’s markets. These markets selling farm and orchard fresh food have long been a draw for tourists and the addition of local wines and craft beers will add to their experience with regional flavours. When they dine out, they’ll also be able to enjoy a bottle of B.C. wine they picked up on tour, courtesy of the BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) program at many local restaurants. They may also notice that on-site tasting venues at wineries have been expanded, allowing for wine consumption in vineyards, picnic areas, etc. Other recent changes: • No more cordoned-off “beer gardens” at festivals, giving tipplers more freedom to roam. • Visitors permitted to carry alcoholic beverages - such as a glass of wine from the lobby or hotel bar - to their room. • Room service hours for liquor sales extended at hotels. • The return of “Happy Hour” in B.C. – permitting discounted alcohol sales during a specific time period at licensed establishments. • Children permitted to dine with their families in pubs. • Patrons may take home unfinished bottles of wine from a bar or restaurant. • Refrigerated coolers for beer and wine in several British Columbia government liquor stores. ENDLESS BOUNTY, UNPARALLELED BEAUTY
If for your travels, you are looking for unsurpassed beauty, adventure, diversity, entertainment, excellent hospitality – in short, that “wow” factor, the Thompson Okanagan delivers in spades. This past year, the region was named one of the 10 best wine destinations of 2015 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. It ranked as the top wine region in the world by The Huffington Post and was named the second best wine region to visit by USA Today. And Travel + Leisure magazine, published by TimeInc, named the Okanagan Valley as one of Best Places to Travel in 2016 – the only Canadian destination in its top 50 list. The publication said that the region can no longer be described as a “nascent Napa,” as it has been in the past. “While the area’s stark beauty and hot, dry summers have always drawn outdoorsy types, there’s now an increasingly sophisticated scene revolving around food and local wine.” Last August, the B.C. Wine Institute hosted acclaimed UK wine writer Steven Spurrier for the first time, and in the fall edition of The Somm Journal he proclaimed, “For me, wine is the three Ps: the place, the people and the product. British Columbia ticks all three boxes with exuberance, elegance and conviction.” That opinion is shared by Rupert Millar of Europe’s top beverage trade publication, The Drinks Business, who wrote the region’s tourism business is the driving force behind the wine industry’s growth. “With its relatively manageable size, wineries equipped with renowned restaurants and also a thriving industry for water sports and other outdoor pursuits, it’s is an increasingly popular place to visit.” Wine tourism is at an all-time high. That’s thanks in no small part to partnerships of Destination B.C. and the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, a driving force behind an industry that now attracts 3.5 million visitors a year and generates $1.7 billion for the regional economy. And according to TOTA’s own market research, a substantial portion of tourists are visiting a winery while they’re here, something that is destined to keep growing. The appeal of the Thompson Okanagan lies in large part with its incredible diversity. Repeat travellers can confidently plan return visits again and again and never fear having the same experience twice. And at the end of the day, a glorious glass (or bottle!) of local wine awaits! The Thompson Okanagan is a vast and varied landscape, about the size of Ireland, and gets its name from two major geographic features, the Thompson River and Okanagan Lake. It stretches from Christina Lake in the Boundary region and the Shuswap to the east, Cache Creek and Princeton to the west, Mount Robson in the north, and Osoyoos in the south. Mt Robson is a UNESCO world Heritage Site and home to the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies at an elevation of 3954 metres (12,972 feet) Canada’s only pocket desert is located in Osoyoos where summertime temperatures can soar over 40C. The Thompson Okanagan is also where you’ll find the highest concentration of wineries in the province thanks to its favourable and diverse microclimates. More than 80 per cent of the vineyards in B.C. are planted here producing in excess of 60 different grape varieties. With a variety of wine trail organized events and four seasonal festivals it’s no wonder that grapes have become the region’s most prized bounty. The Okanagan Fall Wine Festival is selected annually as one of the Top 100 events in North America by the American Tour Bus Association. For more information www.hellobc.com/tota 6

SOUTH OKANAGAN: Oliver & Osoyoos When you reach Oliver and Osoyoos, you have now entered the fruit basket of the ThompsonOkanagan. This is a veritable paradise of plenty when it comes to produce and wine. The roadways through this region are literally lined with orchards, vineyards and fruit stands. In the spring, every corner of this area comes alive with gorgeous blossoms, followed by the brilliant foliage and eventually the distinctive hues of the individual fruits. You’ll be tempted to pull over along the route to pluck a fresh cherry, apricot, peach, pear, plum, apple and, of course, grape as they ripen. The temptation is hard to resist. It might surprise you that under normal circumstances little would grow here. The Oliver/Osoyoos area is in a desert belt – an extension of the Sonoran stretching up from Mexico. Cacti and rattlesnakes are more at home here. Irrigation has breathed new life into the South Okanagan, creating fertile ground for growing fruit. Coupled with the area’s extended days of heat and sunshine and you’ve got wine growing Nirvana. Oliver has been dubbed the Wine Capital of Canada. And while that is a self-designation by the municipality, the area comes by it rightly with the highest concentration of wineries and vineyards of any where in the country. There are more than 300 separate vineyards here, encompassing more than 5,000 acres of grapegrowing land. That makes up more than 50 per cent of the total vineyard in the province. The main grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Gris. And this is Canada’s hot spot - literally. It routinely tops the list as the hottest place in the country during the are in excess 16 summer. 01 12 C&SAverage WTHB.pdfdaily 1 highs 2016-01-12 2:09ofPM29 C in July, but temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s are not uncommon.

No self-respecting wine enthusiast would visit here without out at least considering a tour of the area. Osoyoos is the southernmost point in the valley and located on the shores of the warmest lake in Canada. It’s a border town with easy access to the U.S. for those who want to make a quick trip stateside. Despite recent development of luxury hotels and residential communities, Osoyoos has managed to retain its small-town charm offering idyllic respite with all the amenities you might desire at your fingertips. Dining in the area has been cranked up a notch in recent years, with a nod toward regional and season cuisine. Gorgeous beaches and family-friendly options are plentiful in this stunning lakeside community. Awesome hiking and biking trails and backcountry adventures are close at hand. And you’re never more than a few minutes from a glass of wine. This is B.C. wine country at its best. SOUTH OKANAGAN: Okanagan Falls & Kaleden SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY: Cawston & Keremeos If you’re after a relaxed pace and a tranquil space free of big box stores but filled with local artisans, antique shops and assorted hidden gems, then Okanagan Falls in the South Okanagan is beckoning with its simpler way of living. The name of the town is a surprise to many, as the “falls” themselves don’t actually exist. Originally, it boasted twin falls that fell from where Skaha Lake empties into the river, however, in the 1950s dams to control flooding were built, reducing the falls into a series of rapids. Still, the area is pretty and a huge draw for nature lovers, as a large selection of wildlife lives in the area, with many unique desert flora and fauna for naturalists to explore. A bird sanctuary is situated at Vaseux Lake just south of the town, complete with an interpretive centre. One of its many draws is a large flea market filled to the brim with eclectic finds that runs from March through November. There are also beaches, trails and parks to explore. Okanagan Falls is also home to the Corkscrew Drive, a sizeable collection of grassroots wineries with distinct approaches to wine. Many of the producers on this trail have embraced their unique terroir to craft wines with unique signatures to critical acclaim. You’ll find biodynamic, quirky and passionate producers here. For the hardcore wine enthusiast, it’s a must visit. The main grapes grown are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. There are 35 vineyards in the area growing about 600 acres of grapes. Further southwest and you’ll find yourself in the Simikameen Valley. Here the Similkameen River brings life to the arid grasslands of the valley. Keremeos is the Fruit Stand Capital of Canada and the region’s ability to grow excellent fruit is evident with the increasing number of wineries. The Similkameen Valley is rich in mining history and you can still pick up a pan and try your luck at striking gold. First Nations culture and agricultural lands still thrive here. You’ll come across colourful fruit stands and farmlands, as well as an increasing amount of new wineries that produce both grape and fruit products in the bottle. They’ll make you think twice about what is possible with the region’s bounty. There are about 45 vineyards in the valley, and the main grapes are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. The Similkameen boasts scores of accessible fishing lakes along with the remote backcountry terrain of Cathedral Provincial Park, a major attraction to adventure seekers looking for unparalleled experiences and breathtaking views. History buffs will be drawn to the old frontier-like atmosphere and landscape.

SOUTH OKANAGAN: Peachland, Summerland, Penticton & Naramata Venturing south from the Central Okanagan, you will begin to understand why the South Okanagan is regarded as a vacation hotspot with its beauty, bounty and glorious weather. Indeed, the average high in July is 28C, and temperatures can soar above 40C making the many beaches here a welcome respite. It doesn’t rain or snow much either. Average annual precipitation is just 332 mm. There are about 1,500 acres of planted grapes, encompassing about 14 per cent of the total vineyard in B.C. The heaviest concentration of growing is along the Naramata bench. The main varieties in this area are Merlot, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The first two charming lakeside communities should give you some clue as to what awaits in Peachland and Summerland. Both are picturesque, peaceful retreats bathed yearly in ample sunshine and located right along Highway 97 between Kelowna and Penticton. Peachland offers clean waterfront access to beaches, marine parks and docks. One of the most popular attractions for families is Swim Bay, which has a zip line, lifeguard supervision and a children’s playground. There are also plenty of walking, hiking and biking trails, not to mention several quaint wineries. Summerland is home to the Kettle Valley Railway, a historical attraction that will delight groups and families. Nature lovers will enjoy the ornamental gardens, agricultural research centre, and the salmon hatchery. But if you’re here for the wine, the concentrated group of wineries that have marketed themselves as the “Bottleneck Drive” won’t disappoint. This area encompasses rolling vineyards with incredible views and a truly grassroots feel and artistic vibe. Expect to be entertained by local musicians, and enjoy the works of artists and crafters. This is an area rich in creativity. It’s also a foodie’s paradise, with local producers and restaurateurs embracing the concept of the 100-mile diet – regional cuisine that promotes local, seasonal ingredients. A little further south and you’ll hit another urban centre – Penticton – which is ideally situated between Okanagan and Skaha Lakes, making it the ultimate water-lovers paradise. It’s a city with a small town feel appealing to all types of travellers. Families will love the beaches and the river channel in the heart of the city down which you can float on tubes and other personal inflatables, an activity that has been listed as one of the 115 things to do in the book titled, The Great Canadian Bucket List, published last year. Adventure travellers will appreciate that they’re only minutes from Skaha Bluffs, a climber’s paradise that has garnered international recognition. A short drive through Penticton and around the southeast side of Okanagan Lake and you’ll find yourself on the pastoral Naramata Bench, a place that will take you back to a simpler time. The view of the lake as you wind your way down the road toward the village is nothing short of breathtaking. Better yet, here is where you’ll find one of the highest concentrations of wineries in the valley, taking full advantage of the setting, the climate and unique terroir that is the measure of a great wine. The Naramata bench is Nirvana for the daytripper and if you don’t mind the occasional hill climb, this is a sensational destination for a winery tour by bicycle.

CENTRAL OKANAGAN: Kelowna & West Kelowna The Central Okanagan would be considered the urban hub of the Okanagan Valley with both the most populus city, Kelowna, and the third largest, West Kelowna, making up its core. But the region is also rooted in a rich agricultural history. This is where wine growing got its start. Father Charles Pandosy is credited with setting up the first vineyards at the Obelate Mission near Kelowna back in the 1860s. The purpose was to make sacramental wines for his parish. Nobody could predict what was to come, but these humble beginnings served as the catalyst for what is today a mecca for wine enthusiasts locally and globally. The region is home to a growing number of wineries, ranging in size from tiny cottage-style to larger but still intimate by most standards. The primary grapes grown here today are Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling. There are more than 1,000 acres of grapes planted, making up about 10 per cent of the total vineyard in the province. As far as destinations go, the Central Okanagan has it all. The region has two distinct communities – Kelowna and West Kelowna, separated by William Bennett Bridge at the narrowest point of Okanagan Lake. The area offers the scenic wonders of the great outdoors that will appeal to adventurers, with the convenience of an urban setting for those who crave modern conveniences. It is here you will find miles of sandy beaches hugging the shores of Okanagan Lake that attract families and sun worshipers, as well as hiking and biking trails within minutes of a central core. There are plenty of options for accommodations, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, arts and cultural activities, historical attractions and much more to be had on both sides of the lake. You’re also just a stone’s throw away from dozens of golf courses, trails and nature preserves, not to mention the ever beckoning lake. The water is a veritable liquid playground in this area with amenities for waterskiing and boarding, windsurfing, paddle boarding, parasailing, jet-skiing, fishing and more. For those who love boating, there are scores of beaches, coves, and parks to explore that are accessible by watercraft. Maps are available identifying public areas, campsites and buoys in case you want to anchor on the water over night. The weather is pretty ideal for these sorts of activities. The Central Okanagan averages a high of 1.5C in December and a high of almost 30C in July. Precipitation is quite low, averaging just over 400 mm annually. On the Kelowna side of the lake, you’ll find Okanagan Mountain Park, the site of the infamous fire that swept down the mountainside in August 2003, torching hundreds of homes, forest and parkland, even destroying many of the popular Myra Canyon railway trestles that were a hit with hikers and had survived Mother Nature’s wrath for more than 80 years. Now new life has been injected in the park and it is once again a sought-after backcountry area for hiking, biking and camping. The canyon trestles have been restored and once again open for everyone’s outdoor enjoyment. An interconnected corridor of parks follow Kelowna’s downtown waterfront, perfect for a leisurely sunset stroll after a romantic dinner out. Foodies and families will get a kick out of Gellatly Nut Farm located on the west side. Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Kelowna, you’ll find Big White Ski Resort, a winter destination renowned for its champagne powder snow and family-friendly vibe. The west side groomed crosscountry ski trails nearby for those with an adventurous spirit. For the hardcore wine enthusiasts, there are several clusters of wineries located along the lake off Boucherie Road in West Kelowna and in the southeast part of Kelowna city. And you’ll also find one of the oldest and largest wineries right downtown. A piece of the wine industry’s vital history still lives on with Father Pandosy’s Mission heritage site in Kelowna, where you’ll find his chapel still standing.

SHUSWAP: Celista, Tappen, Salmon Arm & Enderby NORTH OKANAGAN: Armstrong, Vernon & Lake Country The Shuswap is one of the most northern grape growing areas in North America. Here you’ll find a smattering of wineries which tend to focus on aromatic whites and light fruity reds. The primary grapes grown here are Ortega, Siegerebe, and Marechel Foch. Weather wise, it’s not too hot and not too cold. The coolest month is December, when it gets an average daily high of -1.6 C and low of -6.9. July is the warmest with an average high of 25.9 and low of 11.4. Precipitation is moderate with about 670 mm annually. The Shuswap is an area filled with with quaint communities that are linked by a gorgeous lake and surrounded by beautiful forested mountains. The region is known for being down-to-earth and friendly. The region consists of seven primary areas: Chase, South Shuswap, North Shuswap, Salmon Arm, Sicamous and Eagle Valley, Falkland and Enderby. It’s where you’ll find charming boutiques, a thriving artist community and a well-established and wildly popular summer music extravaganza called the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival that will appeal to couples as well as groups. The Shuswap Lake system encompasses over 1,000 kilometres of shoreline and hosts the largest houseboat fleet in Canada from two key bases – Salmon Arm and Sicamous. Houseboating on the lake’s pristine waters is a huge warm weather draw to the region providing memorable holidays for

families and groups. There are numerous marine park campgrounds where exploration abounds through trails along the forested shoreline. Another attraction for families in the Shuswap includes the famous Adams River salmon run when observers may get a chance to see millions of sockeye salmon return to spawn in October. Nature lovers will appreciate Salmon Arm’s waterfront trails through a protected sanctuary featuring boardwalks, paths, a bird viewing tower and a Nature House. Then there’s Margaret Falls, which passes through a rock chasm and offers an enchanted forest feel. There’s a unique ecosystem of flowers, trees and shrubs and the water from Reinecker Creek cascades down a sheer rock face creating a natural shower. There’s also a hidden cave in the rock behind the falls. The Shuswap has a deeply rooted farming community and food enthusiasts are invited to do a circle farm tour that also includes the charming wineries of the area. It’s a terrific way to explore the regional food culture. Further south, visitors will come to the northern gateway to the vast Okanagan. They’ll get their first glimpse of the vast Okanagan Lake which the fills most of the valley floor. The North Okanagan features fertile agricultural land known for daily products, fruit and vegetables. The rich grasslands brought ranchers to the valley and dude ranch experiences are available for adventurers who want the chance to work the land. But there’s something for urban cowboys and girls as well in the city of Vernon where there’s great shopping and dining experiences. This is serious lake country – in fact, one municipality in the region is called just that. So there are countless ways to enjoy the water, whether its trolling for your lunch in a quiet bay, trying out a waterski ramp, or just taking in the view while sipping a fine wine with your significant other on the patio of a local winery. One of the most stunning features of the North Okanagan is Kalamalka Lake, a large body of water on south side of Vernon. Calcium carbonate deposits form crystals that reflect sunlight and create the vivid colours that vary from deep blue to brilliant aquamarine. There are gorgeous beaches and a 2,420 acre provincial park and protected area with pristine natural areas that nature lovers are sure to enjoy. Less than an hour from Vernon, Silver Star Mountain beckons offering a playground for winter sports and a picturesque village feel. But the resort is equally as popular during the warmer months offering miles of mountain biking and hiking trails. In fact, the mountain hosts a summer food and wine festival in August. And nature lovers will enjoy the stunning display of wildflowers which bloom all over the hills and meadows. It’s a must go for just about every type of traveller. Lake Country, the most southern part of this region is where visitors will start to see a growing concentration of wineries, so hard-core enthusiasts will be spoiled for choice. There are more than 30 vineyards in the Vernon-Lake Country area, comprising of more than 255 acres of planted grapes. The primary grapes grown are Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Gewurztraminer. Producers are also making wines, liqueurs and distilled products with fruit, honey and other B.C. grown raw materials. The winters are reasonably mild and summer warm and dry. The average daily high in December hovers around 1C, while you can expect the daily high temperature of 27C in July. Average precipitation is about 430 mm annually.

SOUTH THOMPSON: Kamloops & Gold Country Tourists have had a longstanding love affair with the Kamloops/Thompson Region. It’s a yearround playground for outdoor enthusiasts and urban adventurers. It’s rich in First Nations culture and cowboy lore. There’s boundless access to pristine wilderness and remote fish camps. There are opportunities to shop ‘til you drop or ride the dusty trail. And now there is wine. The Kamloops/Thompson Region may be the most northerly area within B.C. Wine Country, but it enjoys more than 2,000 hours of sunshine annually and often records some of the warmest temperatures in Canada on any given day during the growing season. This fact is not lost on the winemakers of the region who have put their faith in the area being an up and coming hotbed for wine production. Indeed, it is just coming into its own with several family-owned wineries. With about 80 acres of grapes planted, the region makes up only about one per cent of the total vineyard in B.C. But the potential is real and enthusiasts can count on a personalized experience and share in the passion and determination of the pioneers who are undaunted by any perceived challenges. After all, when winegrowing began in B.C. decades ago, there were plenty of naysayers and few – even those who took the plunge – predicted it would reach the level of excellence it has achieved today. The vintners who set the course were considered to be risk takers and mavericks at best; foolhardy and doomed at worst – but they proved the critics wrong and history speaks for itself. There’s a lot to love about the Kamloops/Thompson region. Anchored by the Thompson River, where you’ll find vineyard beginning to line its banks, a visit to a winery can often accompanied by a wildlife viewing experience. In the north is where you’ll find Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies and Wells Gray Provincial Park, which features Helmcken Falls, higher than Niagara and plunging a breathtaking 141 metres down a narrow canyon.

Further west of Kamloops in the Fraser Canyon is Gold Country, or the Lillooet-Lytton region nestled among some of the most extraordinary geography in the country. The area has long attracted those who enjoy hiking, geocaching, mountain biking and whitewater rafting. But its hot, dry summer climate – temperatures here routinely break heat records – has also sparked the imagination of wine producers. Today there are more than 30 acres of grapes planted, with more vineyards planned. Accessing wine country via the Thompson region would be a fantastic way to kick off a wine-soaked tour of the Thompson-Okanagan. Tasting the region’s unique terroir while taking in its diverging landscape will guarantee an unsurpassed sense of place.

FRASER VALLEY & GREATER VANCOUVER Rich in agricultural roots, the Fraser Valley is known for its favourable climate year round and is home to some of the most fertile land in Canada. This is renowned farm country where an abundance of produce is grown. In fact, more than half of the province’s farming industry is located here. There are more than 20 wineries scattered between Chilliwack and Richmond that are considered part of the Fraser Valley wine growing region, although several are actually in the Metro Vancouver region. There are more than 200 acres of grapes planted in the area. The main varieties are Pinot Noir, Bacchus, Pinot Gris, Siegerebe and Madeleine Angevine. Producers focus on making fresh fruit-forward wines but also use other tree fruits and often obtain grapes from the Okanagan to create fuller bodied offerings. The Fraser Valley is only about an hour from downtown Vancouver, but you won’t feel much of the city’s influence in the here. It’s a grassroots and hard-working community with a much slower pace than its bustling neighbour to the west.

And surrounding farmers’ fields and vineyards are rugged mountains, dense forest and pristine waterways – terrain that offer travellers great outdoor adventure opportunities such as mountain climbing, salmon fishing, white water rafting, zip lining, biking and hiking. There are numerous attractions such as aquatic and recreation centres, historic sites, parks and campgrounds. Nature lovers will be drawn to Mountain View Wildlife Conservation and Breeding Centre and Bridal Veil Falls. The close proximity to Metro Vancouver makes it highly accessible and provides excellent opportunities for rural daytrips and urban excursions.
VANCOUVER ISLAND & GULF ISLANDS Dubbed the “Wine Islands,” Canada’s far West Coast is casual, home-grown, rustic sophistication. It’s a must-visit for the foodie who craves an intimate experience and is passionate about wine and local, sustainable ingredients. There are multiple wineries on the main island mostly concentrated in the Saanich Peninsula and Cowichan Valley, which are blessed with microclimates that that are drier and more favourable to winegrowing then one might think on the “wet coast.” You’ll also find a bunch of wineries on the neighbouring gulf islands of Saturna, Thetis, Hornby, Salt Spring and Quadra. The lifestyle on the islands is laid-back, carefree, unhurried, unpretentious, artistic and that is apparent in their approach to wines. Vancouver and the Gulf Islands have a longer growing season, a lower risk of frost in the spring and fall and little or no snow in the winter. These areas are more suitable for growing aromatic whites and lighter-style reds. About 500 acres of grapes are grown in this region. The main varieties are Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Ortega, Foch and Gewurztraminer. Many island producers purchase grapes from the Okanagan to make fuller-bodied wines. But fine wines are also being made from tree fruits, berries and even honey. This area is a naturalist’s dream with natural wonders galore – cliffside hiking trails, Garry oak ecosystems, sandstone formations. Adventure lovers can partake in experiences unique to the coast such as ocean kayaking and diving, deep sea fishing and whale watching tours. For families there are plenty of beaches, campgrounds and festivals and events year round. Those with a boat will appreciate the fact that many of the most pristine natural areas can only be reached

by the water. The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, for example, covers 33-square kilometres of parkland on numerous islets, reefs, and islands. Nature cruises, boat charters, sailing tours, and saltwater fishing charters are options to get out on the water. Agritourism is very strong in this area with a focus on the 100-mile diet and organics. You’ll find roadside stands and farm-gate shops offering up fresh local produce, honey, spring lamb, cheeses, and, of course, wine. Urban dwellers can opt to stay in Victoria, a beautiful seaside city with a central harbour and an Old World charm. The area teems with heritage architecture and stunning garden displays. It’s a place here high tea is a ritual and a laid-back attitude is a must. It’s an ideal spot for a romantic getaway complete with horse-drawn carriage rides and fine seaside dining.

KOOTENAY REGION One might have never imagined finding a winery in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, but today there are several. It’s better known for being a rugged, pristine area filled with lakes, rivers, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, meadows and mineral hot springs. But grapes were first planted in 1995 and today the Kootenays may be small but its full of potential. There are about 100 acres of grapes planted in the East and West Kootenays and Grand Forks region. The varieties grown here include Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Wine enthusiasts will enjoy the quaintness and the pride the vintners have in their products. But most of all they will appreciate the fact that the producers pushed incredible boundaries to coax the grapes from the soil to the glass and have a determination to make world-class wines. The Kootenays are an outdoors person’s ideal. There are hectares upon hectares of undeveloped terrain, waterways and natural habitat providing unsurpassed exploration, flora and fauna observation and activities such as climbing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking and biking, hang gliding, and more. There are also excellent golf courses and ski resorts. This is a region with an adventurous spirit, a friendly vibe and an ecosystem consciousness. The people here take pride in their land and work hard to preserve it. Families will delight in the Kootenays. The area teems with festivals and events, campgrounds, playgrounds and historical attractions. But romantic couples will also be drawn to the charming bed and breakfasts, mineral hot springs and scenery.

WINE + GOLF
Fairview Mountain Golf Club
Wine is fine, but aside from the vine, British Columbia’s supernatural terrain will appeal to another kind of buff – the golfer. Like those who are passionate about wine, golf enthusiasts appreciate quality. And B.C. delivers with amazing vistas, challenging topography and gorgeous landscapes. While B.C.’s wine country has been referred to the “Napa of the North,” B.C.’s golf country could be considered the Palm Springs of Canada. Add to that the amazing ocean, lake, river side and mountain locations and you have a golf destination unsurpassed. There are as many golf courses in the province as there are wineries, so you can combine not one, but two great passions. People who travel together tend to have eclectic interests. B.C. is an ideal destination for couples, families and groups who appreciate its diversity. While some might be focused on touring and tasting their way through B.C. Wine Country, other members of your party might want to soak in the landscape and climate on a different plane, such as golf. The multitude of courses offer experiences for all abilities and desires. More often than not, travellers are looking to get the most out of their limited leisure time by expanding their destination experiences. And vacationers are catching on that if they enjoy both golf and wine, then visiting British Columbia is a great way to get their chip and sip on. B.C. is home to more than 300 courses ranging from simple family-friendly par threes to world-class facilities, which are a challenge for even scratch golfers. Some of the world’s top golf architects have lent their expertise to designing courses in the province, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Les Furber. And you can’t beat B.C.’s natural beauty – teeing off with a backdrop of mountains, lakes, ocean or desert landscapes is simply unsurpassed. Today, you are just as easily to have a view of a vineyard when golfing in the province, which makes it über easy to swing and sip on the same day. Tour operators have recognized this trend and have begun developing package options that reflect a dual interest. Individual golf courses are also promoting B.C. wine by offering winery tours direct from their facilities. Depending on the location and your personal desires, you have a number of choices when it comes to planning your golf and wine tour. You may want dedicate certain days to golf and others to wine V E R NON G O L F & C O U N T RY C LU B separately to make the most of each activity. But the proximity of many of the region’s golf courses to the wineries, particularly in the Okanagan-Similkameen, means you can spend a few hours on the links then roll out on a wine tour on the same day with ease. So if your time in B.C. is limited there is no reason you can’t enjoy golf and wine to the max. Planning a golf and wine tour is especially versatile when members of your party aren’t necessarily interested in both activities. Non-golfers can fill their days with wine and scenic tours, while the golf enthusiast can spend time on the links guilt free and vice versa.

B.C. LIVING
Predator Ridge
If you think British Columbia is an especially nice place to visit, have you ever considered living here? B.C. offers the ultimate in resort living, whether its oceanfront, city, farm, lakeside, island, mountain, small town, golf course, or even the desert life you seek. It can make your relocation dreams come true. The province quite possible has the most eclectic terrain in all of Canada. Where else would you find a desert region where cacti bloom within a few hours drive of the ocean where orcas roam? Here are five reasons to consider moving to B.C.: 1. T HE SCENERY – Just about every part of the province has something breathtaking and indescribable to offer. As you turn each corner you’re bound to come across snowcapped peaks or deep crevasses and valleys; stunning views over water or long expanses of vineyard; majestic old growth forests or twinkling cityscapes. Almost every view is better than the last. Pack your camera. 2. T HE WATER – B.C. has the Pacific Ocean and countless interior rivers, lakes and creeks. There’s endless choice for the hardcore fishing enthusiasts, and watersports and boating junkies, as well as for individuals and families who merely want to play in the surf or sunbath on the beach. 3. T HE WILDLIFE – B.C. is the most biologically diverse province and home to an eclectic mix of wildlife species including several that are rare or unique to British Columbia, such as the white Kermode or “Spirit” bear and the burrowing owl. Native animals include big horn sheep, bison, caribou, killer whale, grizzly bear, bobcat, cougar, bald eagle, sea otter, peregrine falcon and sea lion, just to name a few. 4. T HE WEATHER – B.C has the longest frost-free periods in Canada. It offers the “West Coast Special” being the only province where you can literally ski and golf on the same day 5. THE WINE – Enough said.
