WELCOME TO B.C. WINE COUNTRY istock.com/funstickers

Canada is celebrating a milestone birthday this year, marking 150 years since it officially became a country. If you were a traveller to British Columbia in 1867, you likely were drawn by the fur trade or the hope of striking it rich by prospecting for gold. The west was still pretty wild back then. You certainly didn’t come here for the wine. Yet it was around that time that B.C. wine country began. Father Charles Pandosy is credited with setting up the first vineyards at the Obelate Mission near Kelowna starting in 1859. The purpose was to make sacramental wines for his parish. Those were pretty humble beginnings. The grapes planted were labrusca varieties, native North American species that were less desirable than European grapes. The wines produced weren’t of the best quality. Nonetheless, a smattering of small wineries cropped up on the heels of Father Pandosy’s initiative but Prohibition put a stop to them and most of the vines were pulled out. It wasn’t until 1926 when the first commercial vineyards were planted and Calona Wines began offering products for sale to the general public. It was not a stellar beginning. B.C.’s early foray into the industry was synonymous with jug wines with laugable names like Fuddle Duck and Hot Goose. To serious wine consumers, the products were a joke. No one believed that B.C. could ever evolve into a credible wine region. But it did. The turning point came in the latter part of the 20th century. B.C. wines had evolved somewhat by then. Most of the labrusca grapes were replaced with European hybrids, which were a marked improvement. But they still tended to produce wines of little dimension compared to the revered European vinifera varieties. As much as growers might have liked to planted vines of better quality, they chose the hybrids for a reason. B.C.’s climate was considered too harsh for the delicate vinifera. The summers were certainly hot enough, but producers were afraid the vines wouldn’t winter over. The hybrids were crosses of two or more varieties and designed to be much heartier. That was fine for a while. Prior to late 1988s, the Canadian wine industry was well insulated with a solid grip on the domestic market. But when the North American Free Trade Agreement came into play, winery operators were forced to embrace radical change or risk being overtaken by higher quality imports. They chose to change. 4

Wine Tour Handbook to British Columbia

Fortunately grape growers were offered aid from the federal and provincial governments to pull out the less desirable hybrid varieties and replant the preferred vinifera grapes. There were 14 wineries at the time in B.C., with approximately 3,400 acres of grapes. Growers pulled out about two-thirds of the vines, leaving barely 1,000 acres in the ground. The replant was based in part on experiments undertaken in the 1980s by researchers and growers, but there were also plenty of gambles taken. In the end, it paid off. That move was the catalyst for remarkable growth. Two years later, the Vintner’s Quality Alliance was introduced to further elevate the quality of B.C. wines and set a standard. While the program has been controversial at times, it has gone a long way toward building consumer trust in B.C. wines Today there are approximately 280 licensed grape wineries in the province and another 70 or so licensed producers making fruit wines, mead, ciders and other wine-type products. There are 80-plus grape varieties planted in the more than 10,000 acres of vineyards in B.C. The top two white varieties grown are Pinot Gris and Chardonnay and the top two reds are Merlot and Pinot Noir. But the province is also well known for producing Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah (Shiraz) and Gamay Noir. Canadian wine industry now has an annual national economic impact of $9 billion. Nobody would have expected that 150 years ago.

B.C. LIQUOR LAWS Once upon a time in British Columbia, music, dancing, food, unescorted women and standing upright with alcohol in your hand were all outlawed in liquor-serving establishments.

HARVEST 2016 The appearances of small green shoots on B.C.’s grape vines always delights growers and wine enthusiasts alike, as it marks the beginning of another growing season in British Columbia Wine Country. The 2016 vintage got off to a stellar start with the earliest bud break on record, closing out strong with an early harvest for many wineries across the province. However, the span in between was a bit of mixed bag, weather wise. The summer months were actually cooler and damper than usual, but that was actually a good thing. Because of the early start and unprecedented warm spring temperatures, development in the vineyards was weeks ahead of schedule and growers were concerned their crops would ripen too fast. Hot, dry weather helps develop sugar in the grapes, but too much heat for an extended period can result in fruit that is unbalanced and boozy. Growers want grapes with the right amount of sugar (brix) to achieve body, flavours and alcohol levels, but still with enough acidity that the wines retain their freshness. And an abbreviated growing season is not desired by anyone. Experienced growers will tell you elongating the period the grapes remain on the vine tends to build complexity in the fruit. Often the difference between a good wine and a great one is a little extra hang time. April, May and June in 2016 was unusually warm and while residents and visitors likely rejoiced in the early beach weather, it had vintners worried. Then came July and August and it all changed. It was like the seasons were reversed. But growers welcomed the moderate temperatures.

This was the post-prohibition era, and though the provincial government was no longer banning alcohol outright, it certainly wasn’t encouraging its citizens to drink for fear of regressing to what was known as the “wild west” days.

The fall harvest still came ahead of schedule for many wineries, but summer’s cooling trend help vintners stretch the growing season much further than what might have been possible if the heat continued. The result in 2016 was fruit that was ripe, balanced and with complex nuances expected of a terrific vintage.

And while British Columbia eventually eased up on those silly rules, for decades it retained some of the most antiquated liquor laws in the country. Many of them stifled growth within the wine industry for some time.

Christmas came early for icewine producers when temperatures plummeted on December 6, 2016 to allow several vintners in the Okanagan Valley to begin picking frozen berries for the revered dessert wine.

A case in point was B.C.’s alcohol distribution system. To reach the broader market beyond their own wine shop sales, vintners had to go through government liquor stores or sell through private retailers.

In all, the industry is excited about the 2016 vintage. They expect it to reflect an excellent growing season, as well as the increased maturity of the vines and the people who grow and develop with them.

Wine wasn’t even on the menu.

The government store model is less than ideal for small producers because of a lack of supply to stock all stores for an extended length of time, so the larger wineries tend to dominate the shelves. But private retailers are also a challenge, as each business has to be pitched individually to carry a winery’s products. Plus private retailers also charge consumers a premium, so the wines are almost always more expensive in those shops than they would be directly from the winery. Finally, about 20 years ago, the B.C. government permitted the creation of Vintner’s Quality Alliance (VQA) shops selling only 100 per cent locally-made wine. It wasn’t ideal, but it was a big step up and a great convenience for consumers. In the last few years, the government expanded distribution further by granting licenses to numerous grocery stores across the province to carry 100 per cent B.C.-made wines. Another sticking point when it came to liquor laws and wineries had to do with serving food and wine by the glass. The government forbade it, but then relented and introduced the “J” license program in 1997. While considered a big win at the time, it barred food and wine service after 7 p.m., handicapping vintners from operating a real restaurant. The whole system was overhauled just before the beginning of the millennium, and now many of the top eateries are located next to vineyards. It has been fundamental to the growth of the wine industry. The biggest overhaul to the laws governing the sales and service of alcohol in B.C. has come in the last five years. Here are some of the changes at a glance: • P atrons may take home unfinished bottles of wine from a bar or restaurant. • Refrigerated coolers for beer and wine located in most British Columbia government liquor stores. • Producers are allowed to sample and sell their made-in-B.C. wine and other craft alcoholic beverages at venues such as farmers’ markets, festivals and off-site tasting rooms. • On-site tasting venues at wineries expanded, allowing for consumption in vineyards, picnic areas, etc. • Consumers are permitted to bring their own bottle of wine to a restaurant to enjoy with their meal. Restaurant participation is voluntary and a corkage fee applies. • No more cordoned-off “beer gardens” at festivals necessary, giving tipplers more freedom to roam. • Visitors permitted to carry alcoholic beverages - such as a glass of wine from the lobby or hotel bar - to their room.

• R oom service hours for liquor sales extended at hotels. • The return of “Happy Hour” in B.C. – permitting discounted alcohol sales during a specific time period at licensed establishments. • Children permitted in dine with adults in pubs. • Movie and live-event theatres can apply for a license to serve alcohol. • Breweries and distilleries are permitted to have on-site lounges or tasting rooms. • Agreements reached for direct winery-toconsumer shipping between B.C. and various other provinces. • Law revoked forbidding consumers from bringing alcohol across interprovincial borders. SOUTH OKANAGAN: Oliver & Osoyoos If you drive into the town of Oliver, the first thing that will greet you is a sign announcing the region as “The Wine Capital of Canada.” It was a self-proclamation made in 2001 by the local chamber of commerce, but with so many other wine-growing regions in the country, how could it make such a declaration? If you consider the facts, it comes by this designation rightly. Oliver has the highest concentration of vineyards and wineries in the country. It certainly has the most grape acreage of any B.C. region by far with 35 per cent of the total planted. The next largest area is Osoyoos to the south, with just over 15 per cent. There are about 40 wineries in Oliver alone and about another dozen in the Osoyoos area. While the region may have grabbed the title for itself, in 2002, while doing a tour of the country, the Queen of England gave Oliver the royal proclamation as Wine Capital of Canada – making it about as official as you can get. The most southerly region of the Thompson-Okanagan is a lush landscape populated by acres upon acres of orchards and vineyards making it a veritable paradise of plenty when it comes to fruit and wine. In the spring, every corner of this area comes alive with stunning blossoms, followed by the intense green foliage and eventually the vines and trees hang heavy with the bounty of the season’s fruits. From July through October, you’ll find roadside stands offering fresh cherries apricots, peaches, pears, plums and apples. And, of course, year round wineries will offer up their own bottled bounties made from the grapes and selected tree fruits harvested each year. It might surprise you that under normal circumstances little would grow here. The Oliver/Osoyoos area is in a desert belt – an extension of the Sonoran stretching up from Mexico. Cacti and rattlesnakes are more at home here and there’s a interpretation centre where visitors can experience Canada’s only desert and explore First Nations culture. Fertile ground for growing grapes and fruit has been made possible by determined farmers using irrigation, which has given new life to the South Okanagan. The area’s extended days of heat and sunshine has made it possible to grow varieties not previously possible north of the U.S. border. 16 12 12C&S WTHB.pdf

Moon Curser Vineyards is a family owned winery located on the East Bench of Osoyoos, a small South Okanagan border town celebrated for its hot summers, lakeside fun and world-class vineyards. The Moon Curser name pays tribute to the gold smuggling history of Osoyoos. Its wines, however, show no such respect for tradition – the winery is known for its unusual noble red varieties such as Tempranillo,Tannat and Touriga Nacional along with intriguing whites like the Italian Arneis alongside Roussanne and Marsanne from the Rhone region of France. Moon Curser has brought home many a gold medal from Canadian and international wine competitions. Of particular note was the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards Trophy for Best Canadian Red Wine awarded for its 2009 Border Vines. SOUTH OKANAGAN: Okanagan Falls & Kaleden SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY: Cawston & Keremeos There are few things more iconic to this country than the Canada Goose and it serves as the namesake for one of Okanagan Falls longest running wineries, Wild Goose. In 1983, the founder purchased a barren piece of land east of Okanagan Falls. On a visit to his property, he came upon a huge flock of Canada geese feeding amongst the tumbleweeds, boulders, and rubble. As he approached, the geese took flight and the vision inspired him to call the property Wild Goose Vineyards. Not much was there in the way of wineries at the time, but Okanagan Falls now has more than a dozen producers dotted along a wine trail dubbed the “Corkscrew Drive.” Many of the wineries have embraced their unique terroir to craft products with individual signatures to critical acclaim. You’ll find biodynamic, quirky and passionate winemakers here. For the hardcore wine enthusiast, it’s a must visit.

The community of Okanagan Falls can be described as a little bit rustic and harkens back to a simpler way of living. You won’t find any big box stores here, but if you’re in need of some retail therapy, you’ll be delighted by the eclectic mix of antique stores and craft shops, not to mention the flea market that runs from March through November. There are also beaches, trails and parks to explore. In case you’re wondering, the “falls” themselves don’t actually exist. Originally, the hamlet featured twin falls that fell from where Skaha Lake empties into the river, however, in the 1950s a series of dams to control flooding were built, reducing the falls into a series of rapids. Nonetheless, the area is a huge draw for nature lovers as a large selection of wildlife lives in the area, with many unique desert flora and fauna for naturalists to explore. A bird sanctuary is situated at Vaseux Lake just south of the town, complete with an interpretive centre. Don’t be surprised to find a herd of Big Horn Sheep perched on rocks by the roadside. Southwest off Highway 97 and you’ll find the Simikameen Valley, which is described by the tourism association as “off the beaten path, eclectic, out there and edgy.” It is certainly worth the visit. Situated on the banks of the Similkameen River that breathes life into the otherwise arid grasslands, it’s rich in a pioneering spirit and the “cowboy way” of life still thrives on ranches and farms throughout the area. There’s also a mining history and hopeful prospectors are still drawn to the river’s edge to pan for gold. You’ll come across colourful fruit stands and farms, many of which are organic. And the Similkameen Valley has been recognized as wine region onto its own right, with an increasing amount of wineries that produce both grape and fruit products in the bottle. They’ll make you think twice about what is possible with the region’s bounty. The Similkameen boasts scores of accessible fishing lakes along with the remote backcountry terrain of Cathedral Provincial Park, a major attraction to adventure seekers looking for unparalleled experiences and breathtaking views. History buffs will be drawn to the old frontier-like atmosphere and landscape.

SOUTH OKANAGAN: Peachland, Summerland, Penticton & Naramata If there is one single thing that is synonymous with Canadian wine, it has to be icewine. And this silky sweet dessert wine’s roots begin right here in the community of Peachland. But it all started with a disaster. In 1972, Hainle Vineyards, one of the area’s first estate wineries, suffered an early frost that threatened to wipe out the entire crop. But the owner knew through his own German roots that fine dessert wines could be made with frozen grapes and thus collected the frost-damaged fruit merely to salvage his crop. That year he produced the country’s first 40 litres of icewine, but he had no intention to market it. It wasn’t until six years later, that he decided icewine was an ideal Canadian product and released his first 178 bottles, becoming not only Canada’s, but North America’s first icewine producer. Today, icewine is one of Canada’s most sought after wine products. The communities of Peachland, Summerland, Penticton and Naramata wrap around the southern portion of Okanagan Lake and offer vineyard settings with stunning water views. Enthusiasts will find a vast concentration of eclectic wineries as they follow the lake – some right off the main highway and others slightly off the beaten path, but never to difficult to find. As their names suggest, Peachland and Summerland are both picturesque, peaceful retreats bathed yearly in ample sunshine and located right along Highway 97 between Kelowna and Penticton.

Both offer clean waterfront access to beaches, marine parks and docks. In Peachland, one of the most popular attractions for families is Swim Bay, which has a zip line, lifeguard supervision and a children’s playground. There are also plenty of walking, hiking and biking trails, not to mention several small to medium-sized wineries. Summerland boasts the Kettle Valley Railway, a historical attraction that will delight groups and families. Nature lovers will enjoy Giant’s Head Mountain, ornamental gardens, agricultural research centre, and the salmon hatchery. But if those here for the wine can’t miss the “Bottleneck Drive,” a meandering path leading enthusiasts to plenty of quaint wineries. This area offers a truly grassroots feel and artistic vibe. Expect to be entertained by local musicians, and enjoy the works of artists and crafters. This is an area rich in creativity. It’s also a foodie’s paradise, with local producers and restaurateurs embracing the concept of the 100-mile diet – regional cuisine that promotes local, seasonal ingredients. Urbanites with a taste for wine will no doubt be drawn to Penticton – which is ideally situated between Okanagan and Skaha Lakes, making it the ultimate water-lovers paradise. It’s a city with a small town feel appealing to all types of travellers. Families will love the beaches and the river channel in the heart of the city down which you can float on tubes and other personal inflatable devices, an activity that has been listed in the book titled, The Great Canadian Bucket List. The City of Penticton is renowned for its festivals and special events including the Fest of Ale, Peachfest, Pentastic Hot Jazz Festival, Elvis Festival and the Challenge-Penticton Triathalon. Signature events for the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival are also held here. Adventure travellers will appreciate that they’re only minutes from Skaha Bluffs, a climber’s paradise that has garnered international recognition. Just short drive through the city and around the north side of Okanagan Lake and you’ll find yourself on the Naramata Bench, a pastoral vineyard mecca with stunning water views. Here is where you’ll find one of the highest concentrations of wineries in the valley, taking full advantage of the setting, the climate and unique terroir that is the measure of a great wine. The Naramata bench is Nirvana for the daytripper and if you don’t mind the occasional hill climb, this is a sensational destination for a winery tour by bicycle.

CENTRAL OKANAGAN: Kelowna & West Kelowna The Central Okanagan is where the magic started, some 150 years ago. In fact, Father Charles Pandosy first planted grapes in the area back in the 1860s to make sacramental wine, right around the time confederation talks began that eventually led to Canada becoming a country in her own right. Now on Canada’s 150th birthday, the Central Okanagan has bragging rights to say its winemaking history grew up with the country. Yet in truth, after those initial plantings not a lot happened in the wine business for decades. You wouldn’t suspect that today. It’s a booming industry with more than 30 wineries located in this area within two of B.C. largest interior cities, Kelowna and West Kelowna. Wine enthusiasts can enjoy a mix of urban and agricultural experiences that are somewhat unique to the area. Father Pandosy may have pioneered grape growing in B.C., but there are plenty of other wine-related history makers in the Central Okanagan. Calona Wines was established in 1932 and remains the oldest continuously running winery in the province. Quails’ Gate, while having its own innovative history, for years ran a wine shop out of a log homestead known as the Allison House. Built in 1873, it now serves as a meeting place, gift and snack shop.

And one of B.C.’s newest wineries, Indigenous World, is the first 100 per cent indigenously-owned producers on the globe. The proprietor is the former chief of the Westbank First Nations and a the descendant of the Syilx people. Aside from wine, there’s a lot the Central Okanagan has to offer. Kelowna and West Kelowna are separated by the William Bennett Bridge at the narrowest point of Okanagan Lake and on both sides you’ll find miles of sandy beaches hugging the shores. There’s the urban experience right there if you crave it, but the opportunity exists to enjoy nature thanks parks, creeks, trails, nearby pastures, mountains and more. There are plenty of options for accommodations, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, arts and cultural activities, historical attractions and much more to be had on both sides of the lake. There are also dozens of golf courses, trails and nature preserves ever nearby. Okanagan Lake itself is a veritable liquid playground with amenities for waterskiing and boarding, windsurfing, paddle boarding, parasailing, jet-skiing, fishing and more. For those who love boating, there are scores of beaches, coves, and parks to explore that are accessible by watercraft. Maps are available that identify public areas, campsites and buoys in case you want to anchor on the water over night. On the Kelowna side of the lake, you’ll find Okanagan Mountain Park, the site of a devastating fire that swept down the mountainside in August 2003, torching hundreds of homes, forest and parkland, even destroying many of the popular Myra Canyon railway trestles that were a hit with hikers and had survived Mother Nature’s wrath for more than 80 years. Yet, new life has been injected in the park and it is once again a sought-after backcountry area for hiking, biking and camping. The canyon trestles have been restored and once again open for everyone’s outdoor enjoyment. An interconnected corridor of parks and walkways follow Kelowna’s downtown waterfront and along West Kelowna’s Gellatly Bay area (including a local nut farm) - perfect for a leisurely sunset stroll after dinner.

Mt. Boucherie Winery in West Kelowna proudly stands facing its namesake, a former volcano that created unique soil conditions for grape growing. The winery’s heritage stems back to the beginning of the Okanagan wine industry with the first grapes planted in 1968. Today, we take pride in being one of the few premier wineries using grapes grown exclusively from their own vineyards, located in the Okanagan Valley, Golden Mile Bench and Similkameen Valley. Guiding the grape selection is winemaker Jim Faulkner, who has delivered nine consecutive years of distinctive award winning wines. From the vine to the bottle, we take care of every detail, every grape and every drop of wine. With a 20,000 square foot facility, processing, fermentation and bottling capability, the winery is well positioned for growth. Annually, Mt. Boucherie Winery produces 25,000 cases. Experience the depth of the portfolio and the skill of our growers and winemaker. MT. BOUCHERIE WINERY 829 Douglas Road, West Kelowna p: (250) 769-8803 w: www.mtboucheriewinery.com

It is incredible how many places in Canada were actually named after Canadian Native Aboriginal Indian words or names. Everything from provinces, cities, towns, rivers, lakes and wineries have been named after a First Nation’s word with specific meanings. In fact, Kelowna, from an Okanagan word meaning “grizzly bear” was our true inspiration of adopting the name Grizzli. We welcome you to GRIZZLI WINERY, a part of Kelowna’s Westside Wine Trail. Build your wine experience with a visit to Grizzli Winery’s award winning Tuscany-inspired architect, featuring one of Canada’s largest wine boutique and tasting room. Meet with our wine ambassadors who look forward to hosting fun and educational tours while guiding you through the state of art production facility. Afterwards, relax and lounge at our fusion-themed restaurant and patio. We invite you to visit our estate vineyard and sample highly acclaimed BC VQA table wines, including Canada’s signature Icewines.

Wine Tour Handbook to British Columbia

NORTH OKANAGAN: Armstrong, Vernon & Lake Country The North Okanagan is home to one of the original five estate wineries that pioneered the British Columbia wine industry. Grey Monk Estate Winery, located in Lake Country, planted the first ever Pinot Gris grapes in Canada more than 40 years ago. In fact, the winery’s name is the English translation of the Austrian name for that variety. In the mid-1970s, critics scoffed at the notion that such a revered French vinifera should be subjected to such a “harsh” climate. But the grape not only survived, it thrived! Those brave risk takers may have broken new ground, but others eagerly followed suit. Today, Lake Country – which comes by the name rightly – is home to over half a dozen wineries, all located a short drive from each other, making the region an excellent choice for a vinous day trip. A smattering of wineries are also located a bit further north in the Vernon-Armstrong area. The North Okanagan features rich grasslands, which brought ranchers to the valley and dude ranch experiences are available for adventurers who want the chance to work the land. But if you’re an urban cowboy or girl, the city of Vernon offers up great shopping and dining experiences. Lakes abound in this area, so if you love the water, there are countless ways to enjoy it – whether it’s trolling for your lunch in a quiet bay, trying out a waterski ramp, or just taking in the view while sipping a fine wine on the patio of a local winery.

One dazzling attraction in the North Okanagan is Kalamalka Lake, a large body of water on the south side of Vernon where calcium carbonate deposits form sparkling crystals that reflect sunlight, creating breathtaking blue colours in the water from deep navy to vivid aquamarine. There are sandy beaches and stunning rock faces plus a 2,420-acre provincial park. It’s paradise for anyone who appreciates nature And if that isn’t enough, the North Okanagan is home to Silver Star Mountain Resort, which beckons with an all season playground. In the colder months, it’s a playground for snow sports and offers a colourful picturesque village feel. In the warmer months, it offers alpine meadows full of wild flora and fauna, perfect for hiking, cycling, or merely strolling. Plus, the mountain hosts a weekend summer food and wine festival in August. It’s a must go for just about every type of traveller. Finally, on the most southern tip of the North Okanagan, you’ll find Lake Country. There’s everything here for those who love the water, with a collection of lakes that will welcome boaters, fishing and water sports enthusiasts. And of course, there’s the wine – made possible by pioneers who ignored the naysayers and followed their dreams.

SHUSWAP: Celista, Tappen, Salmon Arm & Enderby The Shuswap, by comparison to other wine growing areas in British Columbia, is a bit of a toddler. Thirty years ago, this was a region of lakes and bush land. But then some brave souls took a chance and planted grapes in Salmon Arm. While wine grape growing in B.C. in general was considered very risky in the early days of the industry, it was especially so in the Shuswap region. Prior to 1990, no one had planted vines in the province so far north but after some experimentation, vintners opted to take a gamble on growing the German varieties of Ortega and Siegerrebe, along with the French grape Madeleine Angevine. That was a risk that paid off. Today, there are almost a dozen wineries in the Shuswap area producing aromatic whites and fruity, complex reds. The grapes grown here have expanded to include, among others, the popular varieties of Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Marachel Foch This region is an ecological gem filled with alpine meadows, dense forests, rolling trails and waterways. Amid this natural habitat you’ll find smatterings of grass-roots communities with charming cafes and boutiques and an active and inspiring artist culture. It’s overall population is small, but swells in the summer with tourists attracted to the region for houseboating, camping, fishing and for the August music extravaganza called the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival. Those looking for a marine-centred getaway, there are numerous park campgrounds where exploration abounds through trails along the forested Shuswap Lake shoreline. Another draw is the Adams River salmon run in October when observers get a chance to see millions of sockeye salmon return to spawn. Nature lovers will appreciate Salmon Arm’s waterfront trails through a protected sanctuary featuring boardwalks, paths, a bird viewing tower and a Nature House. Then there’s Margaret Falls, which passes through a rock chasm and offers an enchanted forest feel. There’s a unique ecosystem of flowers, trees and shrubs and the water from Reinecker Creek cascades down a sheer rock face creating a natural shower. There’s also a hidden cave in the rock behind the falls. The Shuswap has a deeply rooted farming community and food enthusiasts are invited to do a farm tour that also includes the charming wineries of the area. It’s a terrific way to explore the regional food culture.

SOUTH THOMPSON: Kamloops & Gold Country This may be one of the newest wine-growing areas to be established in British Colombia, but it’s a region steeped in a rich history. It’s full of cowboy lore, gold mining stories and First Nations Culture The terms “pioneer” and “forging new frontiers” are well suited to describe wine producing in this area. In fact, Kamloops’ first winery, Harper’s Trail, is named for renowned BC pioneer and rancher, Thaddeus Harper, who used the grounds as a camp and staging area, as cattle were driven from the U.S. to the Chilcotin. Meanwhile, fellow Kamloops-area visionaries and proprietors of Monte Creek Ranch Winery still use their property as a working ranch and carry their commitment to sustainable farming into their production of wine. Vintners may be pushing the envelope when it comes to grape growing, but the region enjoys more than 2,000 hours of sunshine annually and often records some of the warmest temperatures in Canada. After all, when winegrowing began in B.C. decades ago, there were plenty of naysayers and few – even those who took the plunge – predicted it would reach the level of excellence it has achieved today. The vintners who set the course were considered to be risk takers and mavericks at best; foolhardy and doomed at worst – but they proved the critics wrong and history speaks for itself. The Kamloops and Gold Country area is a year-round playground for outdoor enthusiasts and urban adventurers. There’s unsurpassed access to pristine wilderness and remote fish camps. There are opportunities to shop ‘til you drop or ride the dusty trail.

In the north is where you’ll find Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies and Wells Gray Provincial Park, which features Helmcken Falls, higher than Niagara and plunging a breathtaking 141 metres down a narrow canyon. Venture west into Gold Country and 20 provincial parks beckon with a vast array of landscape that will appeal to nature lovers from semi-arid desert to thick forests with lakes, grasslands, meadows, river canyons and mountains. The region offers a unique way to explore these natural features through geocaching offering ideal for group travellers. Couples can enjoy a one-of-a-kind luxury wilderness experience that combines old-world dude ranching with new age wellness. It won’t escape your notice that sage is prominent in this region – this aromatic herb grows wild with abandon, filling the air with its intoxicating scent. And exotic and stunning rock formations, known as the Hoodoos, provide an enchanting backdrop and the opportunity for exploration for the adventurous. If cityscapes are more your thing, make your way to the South Thompson and Kamloops, the second largest metropolitan area in the B.C. interior. Fine dining, nightlife, shopping and world-class golfing are there for the taking. But don’t forget to take note of the south’s stunning valleys and plateaus formed by volcanic land masses and rivers. And beautiful Sun Peaks Ski Resort is less than an hour’s drive away from the city and offers world-class skiing. It’s the site for the annual Okanagan Winter Wine Festival, which is a great option for wine enthusiasts traveling with their families.

FRASER VALLEY & GREATER VANCOUVER Back in the early 80s, while many aspiring producers were setting their sights on the hot, dry, sunny Okanagan to make their winemaking dreams come true, one experienced French family took a gamble on the Fraser Valley. Though others thought the climate in the valley would be risky for growing grapes, these pioneers found that the terroir in south Langley was similar to that of northern France and would be suited to grow cool weather grape varieties. Plus the proximity of Metro Vancouver would be ideal on a marketing perspective. The gamble paid off. Today there are more than 30 wine producers in and around the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver area. Producers focus on making fresh fruit-forward wines but also obtain grapes from the Okanagan to create fuller bodied offerings. Wine Tour Handbook to British Columbia

57

The Fraser Valley is a stunning landscape surrounded by soaring mountains and dense forest, and rich in agricultural roots. In fact, more than half of the province’s farming industry is located here. It’s only about an hour to downtown Vancouver, but you won’t feel much of the city’s influence in the valley. It’s a grassroots and hard-working community with a much slower pace than its bustling neighbour to the west. This region has a lot to offer travellers such as great mountain climbing, salmon fishing, white water rafting, zip lining, biking and hiking trails for those with an adventurous spirit. Romantic couples can enjoy an escape to Harrison Hot Springs, while families will appreciate the many attractions such as various aquatic and recreation centres, historic sites, parks and campgrounds. Nature lovers will be drawn to Mountain View Wildlife Conservation and Breeding Centre and Bridal Veil Falls. The close proximity to Metro Vancouver makes it highly accessible and provides excellent opportunities for rural daytrips and urban excursions.

VANCOUVER ISLAND & GULF ISLANDS The first commercial vineyard on Vancouver Island was established more than in 45 years ago in the Cowichan Valley. Vintners experimented with more than 100 grape varietals before deciding that Pinot Gris, Auxerrois, and Ortega were best suited to the soil and unique microclimate. The first winery opened in 1992, and today more than 40 wineries dot the landscape along Vancouver Island and neighbouring gulf islands. The wineries on the big island are mostly concentrated in the Saanich Peninsula and Cowichan Valley, which are blessed with microclimates that are drier and more favourable to winegrowing then one might think on the “wet coast.” You’ll find another several wineries on the gulf islands of Saturna, Thetis, Hornby, Salt Spring, Denman and Quadra. The lifestyle on the islands is laid-back, carefree, unhurried, unpretentious, artistic and that is apparent in their approach to wines. Vancouver and the Gulf Islands have a cooler but a long growing season, a low risk of frost in the spring and fall and little or no snow in the winter. These areas are more suitable for growing aromatic whites and lighter-style reds. But fine wines are also being made from tree fruits, berries and even honey. Many island producers purchase grapes from the Okanagan to make fuller-bodied wines. This region is a naturalist’s dream with natural wonders galore – cliffside hiking trails, Garry oak ecosystems and sandstone formations to name a few. Adventure lovers can partake in experiences unique to the coast such as ocean kayaking and diving, deep sea fishing and whale watching tours. For families there are plenty of beaches, campgrounds and festivals and events year round. Those with a boat will appreciate the fact that many of the most pristine natural areas can only be reached by the water. The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, for example, covers 33-square kilometres of parkland on numerous islets, reefs, and islands. Nature cruises, boat charters, sailing tours, and saltwater fishing charters are options to get out on the water.

KOOTENAY REGION The Kootenay Region could well be considered of the “millennial generation” when it comes to the B.C. wine industry. The first winery here opened in 2001, but the area is now being embraced by other winemaking visionaries, who see potential in this unique microclimate. Today, there are a half dozen producers. While it is still emerging, wine enthusiasts will enjoy the pride vintners have in their products and appreciate how they’ve pushed incredible boundaries to coax the grapes from the soil to the glass, in their attempt to make world-class wines. Better known for being a rugged landscape teeming with lakes, rivers, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, meadows and mineral hot springs, the Kootenay region is an outdoors person’s mecca. In a world where so much of the land is under concrete, bricks and mortar, the Kootenays still have hectares of undeveloped terrain, waterways and natural habitat providing unsurpassed exploration, flora and fauna observation and activities such as climbing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking and biking, hang gliding, and more. There are also excellent golf courses and ski resorts. This is a region with an adventurous spirit, a friendly vibe and an ecosystem consciousness. The people here take pride in their land and work hard to preserve it. Families will delight in the West Kootenays. The area teems with festivals and events, campgrounds, playgrounds and historical attractions. But couples will also be drawn to the charming bed and breakfasts, mineral hot springs and scenery.

WINE + GOLF Predator Ridge Resort

British Columbia’s gorgeous landscapes, topography and climate are ideal for growing grapes and making rave-worthy wines. But those winning attributes also make it a utopia for another great passion – golf! In fact, there are as many golf courses in the province as there are wineries, so you can combine not just one love, but two. Wine and golf in British Columbia is the perfect pairing. More often than not, travellers are looking to get the most out of their limited vacation time by expanding their destination experiences. And vacationers are catching on that if they enjoy both golf and wine, then visiting British Columbia is a great way to get their chip and sip on. Tour operators have recognized this trend and have begun developing package options that reflect this dual interest. Individual golf courses also promote B.C. wine by offering winery tours direct from their facilities. The province is home to more than 300 courses ranging from simple family-friendly par threes to world-class facilities that are a challenge for even scratch golfers. Some of the world’s top golf architects have lent their expertise to designing some of the courses, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Les Furber. You certainly can’t beat B.C.’s natural beauty – teeing off with a backdrop of mountains, lakes, ocean or desert scapes is not something you’ll find every where. In fact, today you are just as likely to have a view of a vineyard from the tee box. Depending on the location and your personal desires, you have a number of choices when it comes to planning your golf and wine tour. You may want to dedicate certain days to golf and others to wine to make the most of each activity. But the proximity of many of the region’s golf courses to the wineries, particularly in the OkanaganSimilkameen, means you can spend a few hours on the links then roll out on a wine tour with ease. So if your vacation time is limited, there is no reason you can’t enjoy golf and wine to the max. If drinking and driving is a concern, tour operators are an option to shuttle you around. Many will allow you to build your own packages , tailoring to your personal interests, rather than following a set itinerary. Planning a golf and wine tour is a versatile option for mixed groups when not everyone is interested in both activities. Each can explore their passions guilt free but come together to reconnect at the end of each day.

B.C. LIVING

Sunset on Pender Island Destination BC/Reuben Krabbe

There’s a reason why the words “Beautiful British Columbia” are featured on the license plates of vehicles registered in the province. Look around you. This is a land so chalk full of beauty, it’s almost blinding. From the Canadian Rockies bordering the east to the Pacific Ocean bookending the west, there’s plenty to rave about this remarkable province. It’s no wonder people brag about living here and why so many others aspire to relocate here. B.C. is home to Vancouver, one of the densest, most ethnically and culturally diverse cities in the country, but it’s also where you’ll find remote communities with limited access, and some that are completely “off the grid.” You can live in the heart of several of the province’s diverse cities, or in a suburb, on a farm, on a golf course, on a vineyard, high atop a mountain, or deep in the forest. You can live ocean side, lake side, river side or creek side. But what makes B.C. especially unique is its overall vibe embracing the land and its bounty, the environment and a sustainable future. Because of the climate, British Columbia can produce all manner of foods naturally – from seafood, meats, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, wines and more – this is a place where the 100-mile diet can truly be pursued and appreciated. Plus people here tend to lean toward a green way of living and adopt a healthier lifestyle. The terrain often pushes residents to explore and test their limits, enriching their lifestyles and experiences. Still not convinced that B.C is the place for you? Consider these cool facts:
