B.C. WINE COUNTRY Tinhorn Creek/Lionel Trudel

YEAR IN REVIEW Canada celebrated 150 years of independence in 2017, but in British Columbia wine country, the talk was all about the weather. It was in a word: extraordinary. Weather is rarely predictable. And most years, growers can count on some climate challenges. That’s just the reality when your livelihood is at the mercy of the elements. But last year Mother Nature served it up in epic proportions. It was frigid and fiery. It was snowy and sweltering. It was wet and windy. It was one for the record books. No corner of the province was unscathed. The year began with a significant cold snap that lingered for weeks throughout much of B.C. In the Thompson-Okanagan, it threatened the viability of some of the more delicate Vinifera varieties. Sections furthest north were subjected to bone-chilling temperatures as low as -27 C and wineries in that area did report some damage and plant loss as a result. Meanwhile, the weather stayed cool into the spring. In some parts of the province it stymied bud break on the vines until later in the growing season. It also delayed the melt of the substantial snowpack that had been established in the mountains. In most years the runoff can be managed over time, but the spring of 2017 was decidedly soggy, particularly in parts that don’t typically have a lot of precipitation. In the Central Okanagan, for example, May storms brought such a deluge of rain that waterways in various communities spilled their banks and flooded properties in several centres. States of emergencies were declared by the Regional District of the Central Okanagan, the City of Kelowna and the City of West Kelowna. Evacuation orders were issued for those homes and businesses hit hardest by the relentless flow of water. By the time they were rescinded, millions of dollars of damage had been done. And that was just the beginning. With the majority of the snowpack yet to melt, attention turned to setting up barricades to keep water at bay from the already swollen lakes, rivers and creeks. The province sent in members from the B.C. Wildfire Service to build barriers and bladders along public beaches and assist private property owners with sandbag walls. Okanagan Lake, a magnificent 134 km body of water that stretches from Vernon to Penticton, hit record levels. All its pristine sandy beaches ended under water. The high water levels coupled with unprecedented wind storms battered the foreshore and tore apart docks. Restrictions were placed on boaters. Many beaches were off limits. 4

While wineries themselves didn’t necessarily have to worry about the flooding, all the moisture translated to excessive growth and a higher risk of mildew. By the time the water began to recede, one of the hottest summers in the province was already in full swing. Vancouver Island experienced 100 days of hot weather with temperatures topping out at 35 C and only a single day of rain. It was the driest summer ever recorded in the Lower Mainland, with just seven millimetres of precipitation noted over July and August, according to statistics from the Vancouver Airport.

INDUSTRY IMPACT British Columbia sends more than 17 million bottles of wine annually to its neighbours to the east. That amounts to about $70 million per year paid to B.C. wineries. And it’s not just Albertans who love the stuff. Another $400 million worth of British Columbia wine is sold in Canada every year. An additional $10 million gets shipped to other markets around the world. Volume sales of B.C. VQA wines has increased by almost 60 per cent in the last five years alone.

It dried things up quickly in the saturated vineyards and brought welcome heat and sunshine to much of the province. But it also led to the worse wild fire season ever in British Columbia. More than 65,000 people were displaced from 1,346 wildfires, which burned more than 1.2 million hectares since April. That represents 10 times the 10-year average for hectares lost in a single fire season.

And wine brings a lot of people to British Columbia – over a million people each year, which generates more than $245 million in revenue.

As a result, much of the province was under a blanket of smoke for the better part of the summer and into the early fall. For vintners, that meant the sun was often masked by haze. There was a concern that the smoke and ash would taint the grapes and affect the overall flavour of the wines.

It was a startling move that stunned the local wine community, not to mention B.C. wine enthusiasts residing in its neighbouring province.

In the end, none of these issues became real concerns at harvest. The fires were far enough away from the vineyards that they did not have any negative impact. Plus growers today are more experienced and better equipped to deal with weather challenges than when the industry was in its infancy a mere quarter century ago. If anything, these adversities make B.C. producers stronger and the wines more interesting.

In early February 2018, Alberta Premier Rachael Notley imposed a ban of all shipments of British Colombia wine to her province in February 2018.

The embargo came amidst an interprovincial spat over an oil pipeline. Notley stated that wine is an important industry to British Columbia, as is oil to Alberta. The boycott didn’t last long. The two provinces reached an understanding and wine began to flow back into Alberta a mere two weeks later. But the fact B.C. wine was a target at all, demonstrates just how popular B.C. wines have become.

Enthusiasts can expect wines with way more depth and character than what they might have found in earlier years, even when the weather was ideal. You know how the saying goes: what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. It applies to wine, too. And B.C. wines are stronger than ever.

1. T here are 275 licensed grape wineries. But if you include wineries which use other types of fruit in their production, there are 359 in total. But by the time you read this, there will probably be more. 2. T here are 929 vineyards, encompassing more than 10,260 acres of grapes, producing more than 80 varieties. 3. T he top two white grapes grown are Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. The top two reds are Merlot and Pinot Noir. White grapes make up 49 per cent of the plantings, reds account for 51 per cent. 4. There were only 19 grape wineries in 1990. 5. T he latest data shows that the B.C. wine industry produces more that 21 million litres of wine. Two decades ago it was producing less than five million litres. 6. W ineries in British Columbia were not allowed to serve food until 1996. Today, the culinary experience is an integral part of the industry. Many wineries have restaurants that are considered world class.

7. B aby Duck was once the best selling domestic product in the Canadian wine marketplace that it prompted numerous knock offs such as Fuddle Duck, Luv-a-Duck, Canada Duck and Daddy Duck – just to name a few. 8. T he year 1988 was a turning point in the B.C. wine industry thanks to the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. It led to a massive pull-out of less desirable grape vines to make room for varieties that were revered on an international scale. While it was initially a hardship for local growers, it changed the calibre of local wines for the better. 9. The grape acreage today is 10 times what it was in 1990. 10. Icewine was created in British Columbia by accident. One of the area’s first estate wineries suffered an early frost that threatened to wipe out the entire crop. But rather than scrapping the whole crop, the frozen grapes were collected and history was made. 11. I t takes 2.8 pounds to make a bottle of B.C. wine 12. T here are five official “Geographical Indications” (regions) in British Columbia. The Golden Mile Bench became the first official “Sub-Geographical Indication” in the province in 2015. It is still the only one. At least 95 per cent of grapes must come from the specific region mentioned on the label. 13. I f a bottle of B.C. wine has a specific vintage on its label, 85 per cent of the grapes used must have been harvested that year. But vintners are permitted to add as much as 15 per cent of another vintage. Likewise, if the bottle identifies a specific single varietal, the wine must contain at least 85 per cent of that grape. But 15 per cent of the wine can contain other varieties. 14. The first indigenous-owned winery in North America opened in British Columbia in 2004. 15. B .C. welcomes more visitors every year through the wine economy than the province drew for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Code word is PLONK

SOUTH OKANAGAN: Oliver & Osoyoos In this short stretch of the province, you will find more than half of the grape acreage in British Columbia. So it should come as no surprise that the local chamber of commerce declared the area as the “Wine Capital of Canada.” It comes by the designation honestly. If you are looking for a wine-soaked adventure, then the Oliver-Osoyoos region cannot be missed. Here you’ll find 57 wineries and British Columbia’s first official sub-region, the Golden Mile Bench, recognizing it for its unique climates, soil types and wine styles. Oliver-Osoyoos is where the majority of the “big reds” are grown – Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot – varieties that need an extended growing season and plenty of sunshine and heat. And this is Canada’s hot spot - literally. It routinely tops the list as the hottest place in the country during the summer. Average daily highs are in excess of 29 C in July, but temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s are not uncommon. The most southerly region of the Okanagan is a lush landscape populated by acres upon acres of orchards and vineyards making it a veritable paradise of plenty when it comes to fruit and wine. Every spring the air is filled with the heady scent of fruit tree blossoms and the rolling terrain is an explosion of colour. Vivid green foliage then covers the panorama and eventually the vines and trees are heavy with the season’s fruits. From July through October, you’ll find roadside stands offering fresh cherries apricots, peaches, pears, plums and apples. And, of course, year round wineries will offer up their own bottled bounties made from the grapes and selected tree fruits harvested each year. Left to its own, this fruitful landscape would actually produce very little. The Oliver-Osoyoos area is in a desert belt – an extension of the Sonoran stretching up from Mexico. Cacti and rattlesnakes are more at home here and there’s an interpretation centre where visitors can experience Canada’s only desert and explore First Nations culture. Fertile ground for growing grapes and fruit has been made possible by the use of irrigation, which has given new life to the South Okanagan. The area’s extended days of heat and sunshine has made it possible to grow varieties not previously possible north of the U.S. border. Osoyoos is the southernmost point in the valley and located on the shores of the warmest lake in Canada. It’s a border town with easy access to the U.S. for those who want to make a quick trip stateside.

Despite recent development of luxury hotels and residential communities, Osoyoos has managed to retain its small-town charm offering idyllic respite with all the amenities you might desire at your fingertips. Dining in the area has been elevated in recent years, with a nod toward regional and seasonal cuisine. Gorgeous beaches and family-friendly options are plentiful in this stunning lakeside community. Awesome hiking and biking trails and backcountry adventures are close at hand. And you’re never more than a few minutes from a glass of wine.

Moon Curser Vineyards is a family owned winery located on the East Bench of Osoyoos, a small South Okanagan border town celebrated for its hot summers, lakeside fun and world-class vineyards. The Moon Curser name pays tribute to the gold smuggling history of Osoyoos. Its wines, however, show no such respect for tradition – the winery is known for its unusual noble red varieties such as Tempranillo,Tannat and Touriga Nacional along with intriguing whites like the Italian Arneis alongside Roussanne and Marsanne from the Rhone region of France. Moon Curser has brought home many a gold medal from Canadian and international wine competitions. Of particular note was the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards Trophy for Best Canadian Red Wine awarded for its 2009 Border Vines. “Tinhorn’s wines have never been better … the team run a crack concert series and the winery’s Crush Club is one of the best run in the country…” Anthony Gismondi Vancouver Sun, April 2016

THE CREEK As this waterway shapes the landscape, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is carving its own path. Estate grown and handcrafted, The Creek symbolizes a relentless pursuit of excellence, aspiring to bring forth an elegant, luscious, and modern wine that reflects both place and time. After farming our land for 23 years we feel the improvements we made over time have helped coax the best out of our vineyards. This process has resulted in birth of our flagship wine – The Creek.

TOURING NOTES Wine #1 :: _______________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ _______________________________________________ Wine #2 :: _______________________________________ _______________________________________________

OLDFIELD RESERVE Only worthy wines are selected each year for the Oldfield Reserve tier, a creative showcase of the best of the best. The series includes 2Bench White and 2Bench Red, both proprietary blends, as well as a Rosé, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and a Golden Mile designated Chardonnay. All Tinhorn Creek wines evoke the unique terroir of the region: the sage-covered desert terrain.

SOUTH OKANAGAN: Okanagan Falls & Kaleden If you’re after a relaxed pace and a tranquil space free of big box stores but filled with local artisans, antique shops and assorted hidden gems, then Okanagan Falls in the South Okanagan is beckoning with its simpler way of living. The name of the town is a surprise to many, as the “falls” themselves don’t actually exist. Originally, it boasted twin falls that fell from where Skaha Lake empties into the river, however, in the 1950s dams to control flooding were built, reducing the falls into a series of rapids. Still, the area is pretty and a huge draw for nature lovers, as a large selection of wildlife lives in the area, with many unique desert flora and fauna for naturalists to explore. A bird sanctuary is situated at Vaseux Lake just south of the town, complete with an interpretive centre. One of its many draws is a large flea market filled to the brim with eclectic finds that runs from March through November. There are also beaches, trails and parks to explore. Okanagan Falls is also home to the Corkscrew Drive, a sizeable collection of grassroots wineries with distinct approaches to wine. Many of the producers on this trail have embraced their unique terroir to craft wines with unique signatures to critical acclaim. You’ll find biodynamic, quirky and passionate producers here. For the hardcore wine enthusiast, it’s a must visit. Okanagan Falls is home to 12 wineries and almost 540 acres of grapes. The main varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris.

SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY: Cawston & Keremeos EnRoute magazine dubbed the Similkameen Valley, one of the “world’s five best wine regions you’ve never heard of.” Indeed, it’s an up and comer in British Columbia Wine Country, yet its growing conditions are very much like that of the Okanagan Valley and capable of ripening the bold reds. The Similkameen isn’t new to the table. The first winery opened in 1984. But due to the fact it is more remote and orchards, farms and ranches had a pretty strong foothold here, the wine industry didn’t really take off until more recently.

Today, however, there are 19 licensed wineries and 657 acres of vineyard. The top grapes planted are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. The Similkameen River brings life to the arid grasslands of the valley. Keremeos is known as the Fruit Stand Capital of Canada and the region’s ability to grow excellent fruit is evident with the increasing number of wineries. The Similkameen Valley is rich in mining history and you can still pick up a pan and try your luck at striking gold. First Nations culture and agricultural lands still thrive here. The Similkameen boasts scores of accessible fishing lakes along with the remote backcountry terrain of Cathedral Provincial Park, a major attraction to adventure seekers looking for unparalleled experiences and breathtaking views. History buffs will be drawn to the old frontier-like atmosphere and landscape

SOUTH OKANAGAN:

Peachland, Summerland, Penticton & Naramata This area is where you’ll find dozens of wineries dotted along the shoreline of Okanagan Lake, offering one of the highest concentration of producers in the Valley with some of the most buzzworthy settings. It’s like “Napa, but with a lake,” one author penned and since then the term “Napa North” has been frequently applied to this part of British Columbia Wine Country. There are more than 60 wineries in the relatively short distance from Peachland, Summerland to Penticton and along the Naramata and Skaha benches. There is just over 1,200 acres of vineyard producing Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Merlot, and Chardonnay, just to name a few. The average high in July is 28º C, with temperatures that can soar above 40º C on some days, making the many beaches here a welcome respite. It doesn’t rain or snow much either. Average annual precipitation is just 332 mm. The first two charming lakeside communities should give you some clue as to what awaits in Peachland and Summerland. Both are picturesque, peaceful retreats bathed yearly in ample sunshine and located right along Highway 97 between Kelowna and Penticton. Code word is RACKING

Peachland offers clean waterfront access to beaches, marine parks and docks. One of the most popular attractions for families is Swim Bay, which has a zip line, lifeguard supervision and a children’s playground. There are also plenty of walking, hiking and biking trails, not to mention several quaint wineries. Summerland is home to the Kettle Valley Railway, a historical attraction that will delight groups and families. Nature lovers will enjoy the ornamental gardens, agricultural research centre, and the salmon hatchery. But if you’re here for the wine, the concentrated group of wineries that have marketed themselves as the “Bottleneck Drive” won’t disappoint. This area encompasses rolling vineyards with incredible views and a truly grassroots feel and artistic vibe. Expect to be entertained by local musicians, and enjoy the works of artists and crafters. This is an area rich in creativity. It’s also a foodie’s paradise, with local producers and restaurateurs embracing the concept of the 100-mile diet – regional cuisine that promotes local, seasonal ingredients. A little further south and you’ll hit another urban centre – Penticton – which is ideally situated between Okanagan and Skaha Lakes, making it the ultimate water-lovers paradise. It’s a city with a small town feel that will appeal to all types of travellers. Along with the beaches, there’s a river channel that runs through the heart of the city down which you can float on inner tubes, an activity that has been featured on The Great Canadian Bucket List. Adventure travellers will appreciate that they’re only minutes from Skaha Bluffs, a climber’s paradise that has garnered international recognition. A short drive through Penticton and around the north side of Okanagan Lake and you’ll find yourself on the pastoral Naramata Bench, a place that will take you back to a simpler time. The view of the lake as you wind your way down the road toward the village is nothing short of breathtaking. Better yet, here is where you’ll find a huge concentrations of wineries, taking full advantage of the setting, the climate and the unique terroir that is the measure of a great wine. The Naramata bench is Nirvana for the daytripper and if you don’t mind the occasional hill climb, this is a sensational destination for a winery tour by bicycle.

One of the hidden gems on the Naramata Bench family owned Lake Breeze Vineyards has been producing award winning wines since 1995 with focus on Naramata origin. We are located on the Naramata Bench, 12 kilometres north of Penticton on the lakeside of Naramata Road. Okanagan classics like Pinot Gris and Merlot and unique grape varietals Ehrenfelser, Pinotage as well as our signature Pinot Blanc have secured Lake Breeze’s spot amongst the essential Okanagan wineries for both red and white wines. Named Best Performing Small Winery in Canada at the 2016 NWAC as well as 3rd Best Performing Small Winery in 2017. Pause, relax and savour the flavours and views of the Okanagan on our Patio Restaurant. The Patio at Lake Breeze is a special spot for a memorable wine country lunch. CENTRAL OKANAGAN: Kelowna & West Kelowna The Central Okanagan would be considered the urban hub of the Okanagan Valley with both the most populous city, Kelowna, and the fourth largest, West Kelowna, making up its core. But don’t be fool by those numbers. The region is also rooted in a rich agricultural history. This is where wine growing got its start. Father Charles Pandosy is credited with setting up the first vineyards at the Obelate Mission near Kelowna back in 1859. The purpose was to make sacramental wines for his parish. The first winery opened here in 1932 and back then nobody could predict what was to come. But these humble beginnings served as the catalyst for what is today a mecca for wine enthusiasts locally and globally. The region is home to a growing number of wineries, ranging in size from tiny cottage-style to large-scale by Canadian standards. In addition to wine, several producers also have on site restaurant facilities offering world-class culinary experiences. The primary grapes grown here today are Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling. There are more than a 1,000 acres of grapes planted, making up about 10 per cent of the total vineyard in the province. As far as destinations go, the Central Okanagan has it all. The region has two distinct communities – Kelowna and West Kelowna, separated by William Bennett Bridge at the narrowest point of Okanagan Lake. The area offers the scenic wonders of the great outdoors that will appeal to adventurers, with the convenience of an urban setting for those who crave modern conveniences. It is here you will find miles of sandy beaches hugging the shores of Okanagan Lake that attract families and sun worshipers, as well as hiking and biking trails within minutes of a central core. There are plenty of options for accommodations, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, arts and cultural activities, historical attractions and much more to be had on both sides of the lake. You’re also just a stone’s throw away from dozens of golf courses, trails and nature preserves, not to mention the ever beckoning lake. Code word is BLING

The water is a liquid playground in this area with amenities for waterskiing and boarding, windsurfing, paddle boarding, parasailing, jet-skiing, fishing and more. For those who love boating, there are scores of beaches, coves, and parks to explore that are accessible by watercraft. Maps are available identifying public areas, campsites and buoys in case you want to anchor on the water over night. The weather is pretty ideal for these sorts of activities. The Central Okanagan averages a high of 1.5º C in December and a high of almost 30º C in July. Precipitation is quite low, averaging just over 400 mm annually. On the Kelowna side of the lake, you’ll find Okanagan Mountain Park, the site of the infamous fire that swept down the mountainside in August 2003, torching hundreds of homes, forest and parkland, even destroying many of the popular Myra Canyon railway trestles that were a hit with hikers and had survived Mother Nature’s wrath for more than 80 years. Now new life has been injected in the park and it is once again a sought-after backcountry area for hiking, biking and camping. The canyon trestles have been restored and are open for everyone’s outdoor enjoyment. An interconnected corridor of parks follow Kelowna’s downtown waterfront, perfect for a leisurely sunset stroll after a romantic dinner out. Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Kelowna, you’ll find Big White Ski Resort, a winter destination renowned for its champagne powder snow and family-friendly vibe. The west side offers skiing as well, with groomed cross-country trails nearby for those with an adventurous spirit. West Kelowna embraces its agricultural spirit by promoting local growers with its Westside Farm Loop, encouraging visitors and residents to explore area farms, vineyards and nurseries. Just watch for the signs. For the hardcore wine enthusiasts, there are several clusters of wineries located along the lake off Boucherie Road in West Kelowna and in the southeast part of Kelowna city. And you’ll also find one of the oldest and largest wineries right downtown. A piece of the wine industry’s vital history still lives on with Father Pandosy’s Mission heritage site in Kelowna, where you’ll find his chapel still standing.

It is incredible how many places in Canada were actually named after Canadian Native Aboriginal Indian words or names. Everything from provinces, cities, towns, rivers, lakes and wineries have been named after a First Nation’s word with specific meanings. In fact, Kelowna, from an Okanagan word meaning “grizzly bear” was our true inspiration of adopting the name Grizzli. We welcome you to GRIZZLI WINERY, a part of Kelowna’s Westside Wine Trail. Build your wine experience with a visit to Grizzli Winery’s award winning Tuscany-inspired architect, featuring one of Canada’s largest wine boutique and tasting room. Meet with our wine ambassadors who look forward to hosting fun and educational tours while guiding you through the state of art production facility. Afterwards, relax and lounge at our fusion-themed restaurant and patio. We invite you to visit our estate vineyard and sample highly acclaimed BC VQA table wines, including Canada’s signature Icewines.

Perhaps the most breathtaking waterway in this region is Kalamalka Lake, located on the south side of Vernon and extending to Oyama. Calcium carbonate deposits form crystals that reflect sunlight create vivid colours in the water that vary from deep blue to brilliant aquamarine. You won’t be able to pull your gaze away from this stunning view. There are gorgeous beaches and a 2,420 acre provincial park and protected area with pristine natural areas that nature lovers are sure to enjoy. Less than an hour from Vernon, Silver Star Mountain beckons offering a playground for winter sports and a picturesque village feel. But the resort is equally as popular during the warmer months offering miles of mountain biking and hiking trails. In fact, the mountain hosts a summer food and wine festival in August. And nature lovers will enjoy the stunning display of wildflowers which bloom all over the hills and meadows. It’s a must go for just about every type of traveller. Lake Country, the most southern part of this region, is where visitors will really start to see a growing concentration of wineries, so hard-core enthusiasts will be spoiled for choice. There are more than 30 vineyards in the North Okanagan, comprising of more than 255 acres of planted grapes. The winters are reasonably mild and summer warm and dry. The average daily high in December hovers around 1º C, while you can expect the daily high temperature of 27º C in July. Average precipitation is about 430 mm annually. Code word is SHUSWAP

SHUSWAP: Celista, Tappen, Salmon Arm & Enderby The Shuswap has long been synonymous with house boating. Indeed Shuswap Lake offers more than 1,000 kilometres of shoreline, has 309 square kilometres of lake and is home to the largest houseboat fleet in the country. But did you know it is a developing wine region as well? Wines have been produced in the Shuswap area since 1997 and today is home to 10 wineries and 85 acres of vineyard. The top varieties planted are Ortega, Marechal Foch, Siegerrebe and Riesling. So imagine relaxing on the deck of a houseboat as it floats on a scenic, pristine lake, while sipping a chilled glass of crisp wine made just a stone’s throw away. Weather wise, it’s not too hot and not too cold. The coolest month is December, when it gets an average daily high of -1.6 C and low of -6.9. July is the warmest with an average high of 25.9 and low of 11.4. Precipitation is moderate with about 670 mm annually. The Shuswap is an area filled with with quaint communities that are linked by a gorgeous lake and surrounded by beautiful forested mountains. The region is known for being down-to-earth and friendly. It’s where you’ll find charming boutiques, cafes, a thriving artist community and a wellestablished and popular summer music extravaganza called the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival. Another draw is the Adams River salmon run in October when observers get a chance to see millions of sockeye salmon return to spawn. Nature lovers will appreciate Salmon Arm’s waterfront trails through a protected sanctuary featuring boardwalks, paths, a bird viewing tower and a Nature House. Then there’s Margaret Falls, which passes through a rock chasm and offers an enchanted forest feel. There’s a unique ecosystem of flowers, trees and shrubs and the water from Reinecker Creek cascades down a sheer rock face creating a natural shower. There’s also a hidden cave in the rock behind the falls. The Shuswap has a deeply rooted farming community and food enthusiasts are invited to do a farm tour that also includes the charming wineries of the area. It’s a terrific way to explore the regional food culture.

SOUTH THOMPSON: Kamloops & Gold Country Tourists have had a longstanding love affair with the Thompson Valley. In fact the city of Kamloops, the largest urban centre in the area, takes it’s name from the Shuswap word “Tk’emlups,” meaning “meeting place.” It’s a year-round playground for outdoor enthusiasts and urban adventurers. And while it is considered an emerging wine region, it is has a rich history associated to First Nations culture, fur trading, mining and ranching. There’s boundless access to pristine wilderness and remote fish camps. There are opportunities to shop ‘til you drop or ride the dusty trail. And there is wine. The Kamloops/Thompson Region may be the most northerly area within B.C. Wine Country, but it enjoys more than 2,000 hours of sunshine annually and often records some of the warmest temperatures in Canada on any given day during the growing season. This fact is not lost on the winemakers of the region who have put their faith in the area being an up and coming hotbed for wine production. Indeed, it is just coming into its own with several familyowned wineries. With about 95 acres of grapes planted, the region makes up only about one per cent of the total vineyard in B.C. But the potential is real and enthusiasts can count on a personalized experience and share in the passion and determination of these new pioneers who are undaunted by any perceived challenges. Every single wine region in British Columbia has had to prove its mettle when it comes to winegrowing and production. Vintners who set the course must be risk takers. But history has demonstrated that this determination tends to pay off. And year by year, producers in the Thompson Valley are demonstrating just that. There’s a lot to love about the Kamloops/Thompson region. Anchored by the Thompson River, where you’ll find vineyard starting to line its banks, a visit to a winery can often be accompanied by a wildlife viewing experience. In the north is where you’ll find Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies and Wells Gray Provincial Park, which features Helmcken Falls, higher than Niagara Falls and plunging a spectacular 141 metres down a narrow canyon. Venture west into Gold Country and you’ll find a diverse landscape that will appeal to nature lovers with its alpine mountains, wildflower meadows, sagebrush scented desert, thick forests, lakes, canyons and vast ranchlands. The region offers a unique way to explore these natural features through geocaching.

If you’ve always admired the cowboy way of life, there are getaways where you can ride the dusty trail and help drive livestock on a true working ranch. Hiking, bird-watching, fishing and hunting enthusiasts will love all that the natural landscape affords. For example, stunning 10,000-year-old rock formations, known as the Hoodoos, provide a breathtaking opportunity for exploration. If cityscapes are more your thing, make your way to Kamloops, the second largest metropolitan area in the B.C. interior. Fine dining, nightlife, shopping and world-class golfing are there for the taking. But don’t forget to take note of the south’s stunning valleys and plateaus formed by volcanic land masses and rivers. And beautiful Sun Peaks Ski Resort is less than an hour’s drive away from the city and offers world-class skiing. It’s the site for the annual Okanagan Winter Wine Festival, which is a great option for wine enthusiasts traveling with their families. Accessing wine country via the Thompson region would be a fantastic way to kick off a wine-soaked tour of the Thompson-Okanagan. Tasting the region’s unique terroir while taking in its diverging landscape will guarantee an unsurpassed sense of place. Code word is SUPPLE

This is an area where an abundance of produce is grown. In fact, more than half of the province’s total farm industry is located here. The wineries are scattered between Chilliwack and Richmond, yet are considered part of the Fraser Valley wine growing region, although several are actually in the Metro Vancouver region. The main varieties are Pinot Noir, Bacchus, Pinot Gris, Siegerebe and Madeleine Angevine. Producers focus on making fresh fruit-forward wines but also use other tree fruits, yet often obtain grapes from the Okanagan to create fuller bodied offerings. The Fraser Valley is only about an hour from downtown Vancouver, but you won’t feel much of the city’s influence here. It’s a grassroots and hard-working community with a much slower pace than its bustling neighbour to the west. And surrounding farmers’ fields and vineyards are rugged mountains, dense forest and pristine waterways – terrain that offer travellers great outdoor adventure opportunities such as mountain climbing, salmon fishing, white water rafting, zip lining, biking and hiking. There are numerous attractions such as aquatic and recreation centres, historic sites, parks and campgrounds. Nature lovers will be drawn to Mountain View Wildlife Conservation and Breeding Centre and Bridal Veil Falls. The close proximity to Metro Vancouver makes it highly accessible and provides excellent opportunities for rural daytrips and urban excursions.

VANCOUVER ISLAND & GULF ISLANDS Wine has been made on Vancouver Island since 1920, but originally not from grapes. Loganberries were the fruit of choice until the Duncan Project – a government-funded trial – evaluated about 100 different grape varieties in the mid to late 1980s. Eventually it was decided that Pinot Gris, Auxerrois and Ortega were the best choices to grow in the island climate. Dubbed the “Wine Islands,” Canada’s far West Coast is casual, home-grown, rustic sophistication. With access to seasonal, regional ingredients such as seafood, spring lamb, cheese and a bounty of produce, it’s a foodie’s paradise. Vancouver Island visitors who crave an intimate experience and are passionate about wine and local, sustainable ingredients will love it. There are 37 wineries on the main island mostly concentrated in the Saanich Peninsula and Cowichan Valley, which are blessed with microclimates that that are drier and more favorable to winegrowing then one might think on the “wet coast.” You’ll also find another 13 wineries on the neighbouring gulf islands of Saturna, Pender, Hornby, Salt Spring and Quadra. The lifestyle on the islands is laid-back, carefree, unhurried, unpretentious and creative. Vancouver and the Gulf Islands have a longer growing season, a lower risk of frost in the spring and fall and little or no snow in the winter. These areas are more suitable for growing aromatic whites and lighter-style reds. More than 500 acres of grapes are grown in this region. The main varieties are Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Ortega, Foch and Gewurztraminer. Many island producers purchase grapes from the Okanagan to make fuller-bodied wines. But fine wines are also being made from tree fruits, berries and honey. This area is a naturalist’s dream with natural wonders galore, such as cliff-side hiking trails, Garry oak ecosystems and sandstone formations. Adventure lovers can partake in experiences unique to the coast such as ocean kayaking and diving, deep-sea fishing and whale watching tours. There are plenty of beaches, campgrounds and festivals and events year round. Boating enthusiasts will appreciate the fact that many of the most pristine natural areas can only be reached by the water. The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, for example, covers 33 square kilometres of parkland on numerous islets, reefs, and islands. Nature cruises, boat charters, sailing tours, and saltwater fishing charters are options to get out on the water. Agritourism is very strong in this area with a focus on the 100-mile diet and organics. South Eastern region of British Columbia See page 2 for details

One might have never imagined finding a winery in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, but today there are several. It’s better known for being a rugged, pristine area filled with lakes, rivers, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, meadows and mineral hot springs. But grapes were first planted in 1995 with the first winery opening in 2001. Today there are six wineries with about 68 acres of vineyard the East and West Kootenays. It may be small by comparison to other regions, but it has shown potential. The climate is well suited to growing such fine varieties as Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. Wine enthusiasts will enjoy the quaintness and the pride the vintners have in their products. But most of all they will appreciate the fact that the producers pushed incredible boundaries to coax the grapes from the soil to the glass and have a determination to make world-class wines. The Kootenays are an outdoors person’s ideal. There are hectares upon hectares of undeveloped terrain, waterways and natural habitat providing unsurpassed exploration, flora and fauna observation and activities such as climbing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking and biking, hang gliding, and more. There are also excellent golf courses and ski resorts. This is a region with an adventurous spirit, a friendly vibe and an ecosystem consciousness. The people here take pride in their land and work hard to preserve it. Families will delight in the Kootenays. The area teems with festivals and events, campgrounds, playgrounds and historical attractions. But romantic couples will also be drawn to the charming bed and breakfasts, mineral hot springs and scenery. Wine Tour Handbook to British Columbia
