BC WINE COUNTRY WORLD-CLASS WINE If there is any doubt that British Columbia can make a world-class wine, a panel of 40 international judges quickly dispelled it last year. In a competition dubbed Judgment of BC, the panel measured a collection of BC wines against some top-rated ones around the world in two categories – Red Blend and Sparkling – and the local offerings did very well. In fact, BC wines were rated one and two in the red category, beating out fine samples from France, California and Washington State. BC had five wines in the top 10 in the sparkling wine category where it was pitted against great examples from Champagne, South Africa and California. British Columbia has come a long way from the days when its wines were referred to as “plonk” and nobody thought it would ever produce a decent red. There are now 280 licensed grape wineries in BC with more than 10,000 acres of vineyard growing 80-plus varieties. It is home to nine “official” wine regions – Okanagan Valley, Similkameen Valley, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands, Thompson Valley, Shuswap, Lillooet and Kootenays. In addition, the province has begun to recognize “sub-appellations” that allow producers to include a much more specific geographical area on their labels – giving wine drinkers an even greater “sense of place.” These sub-appellations, either approved or in the works, include the Golden Mile Bench, Okanagan Falls, Naramata Bench and Skaha Bench. But BC’s “Wine” Country includes more than beverages made from grapes. It’s home to a growing number of producers making fruit wine, cider, mead, spirits and craft beer. There are 180 craft breweries in the province alone, and almost 100 craft cideries, distilleries, fruit wine and mead makers all made from products grown directly from BC soil. These eclectic offerings mean visitors of all tastes can explore the province’s agricultural wealth with just a sip from a glass. And this might have something to do with why British Columbia has a growing appeal among international tourists. Statistics Canada released a report showing that more than six million international visitors flocked to BC in 2018, which is the highest number on record. More than half of those were Americans, largely drawn by their strong U.S. dollar (this figure does not include day trippers who traveled to the province by car). But the biggest jump in the numbers was among non-American travellers, particularly those from South America, Africa and Europe. And one of the big draws was British Columbia wine country and the experiences that come with it. 4

YEAR IN REVIEW The 2018 grape growing season in British Columbia’s Wine Country tested the mettle of the industry’s producers and once again they came out swinging Mother Nature used everything in her arsenal to serve up another nail biter of a year: recordbreaking spring heat, floods, forest fires, smoky skies, cooler summer temperatures, a balmy fall, and an unusually mild winter, followed by one of the coldest and snowiest Februaries on record. There were blessings and there were caveats, but wine producers have come to expect nothing less. By all accounts, Harvest 2018 could have been the one to bring BC wine producers to their knees. It was the worst wild fire season in history. Fueled largely by lightening strikes in mid-July, BC’s forests were incinerated at a ferocious pace. A provincial state of emergency was declared in mid-August and by the time the smoke settled, more than 3.3 million acres had burned. In BC wine country, the only direct threat was the Mt. Eneas fire between Peachland and Summerland. It forced the evacuation of almost 1,000 homes and came dangerously close to scorching Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards. But thanks to heroic efforts of the wild fire service, which kept the flames at bay by mere metres, not a single vine was damaged. The biggest menace to most of the industry was not the flames. It was the smoke. Smoke taint can affect the grapes giving them an unpalatable ashy character that makes them virtually unusable. While the wild fire season was a provincial disaster, the proximity of most of the activity was removed enough that taint wasn’t really a factor.

Where it did become an issue was in the tourism industry. All the negative reports drove visitors away, even though the gloom and poor air quality was relatively short-lived, albeit at peak travel season. But on the flip side, BC’s wine country had one of its most brilliant spring seasons ever. Exceptionally beautiful weather brought about a very early bud break and pushed development in the vineyards weeks in advance. It carried producers through some of the summer challenges. And then the fall months, especially October, extended the growing period by offering up late season warmth and sunshine. In the end, harvest 2018 went off without too many hiccups for producers with good vineyard management programs. And most have those in place today because they have learned from experience not to take Mother Nature for granted. She is a fickle creature. There were more interesting developments as the industry headed into the winter months. It appeared for a time that BC wine country wouldn’t have much of an Ice wine harvest. Indeed, it was incredibly mild through November-January and temperatures need to hit a consistent -8 Celcius to freeze the grapes in order to produce the luscious nectar required to make Icewine. Mother Nature made up for it in February. Those producers patient enough to let their fruit hang that long were rewarded. Every year there are challenges when it comes to the production of wine. But every wine growing region in the world will encounter them. This is why the exploration and education of wine is so interesting and ever changing, it draws people in and it’s why wine enthusiasts look forward to every glass.

Fact: British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley has been recognized as one of the top seven most exciting places to travel to drink wine in 2019 by a renowned travel website. The Matador Network described the valley as “the rising star of North American wine regions.” The Okanagan shared the spotlight in the article with regions in Spain, New Zealand, Italy and the United States. OKANAGAN VALLEY SOUTH OKANAGAN: Oliver & Osoyoos Oliver is the self-professed “Wine Capital of Canada,” which it comes by honestly as it is home to nearly half of the planted grape acreage in British Columbia. Here you’ll find the Golden Mile Bench, which was recognized as BC’s first official sub-region in 2015, and the sun-soaked Black Sage Bench, which is revered for growing grapes required for full-bodied red wines. This part of the province contains a large stretch of desert and the arid conditions would typically make growing any type of vegetation other than sage brush and cacti a formidable challenge. But irrigation has turned large sections of it into a lush landscape filled with orchards and vineyards, making it a fruit and wine lover’s paradise. Regional Notes: • Baldy Mountain Ski Resort offers family-oriented alpine and cross-country skiing • The area has a unique collection of desert flora and fauna including Burrowing Owls, rattlesnakes, golden eagles, pricky-pear cactus and antelope brush and there is a Desert Interpretive Centre providing education on native species. • Osoyoos Lake is the warmest lake in Canada. • The region is in very close proximity to the United States border. • It is rich in First Nation’s heritage and home to the country’s first indigenous winery. • There are about half a dozen golf courses in the region. Approximate Number of Wineries: 57 Primary Varieties: Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris First Winery: 1980

“Tinhorn’s wines have never been better … the team run a crack concert series and the winery’s Crush Club is one of the best run in the country…” Anthony Gismondi Vancouver Sun, April 2016

THE CREEK As this waterway shapes the landscape, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is carving its own path. Estate grown and handcrafted, The Creek symbolizes a relentless pursuit of excellence, aspiring to bring forth an elegant, luscious, and modern wine that reflects both place and time. After farming our land for 23 years we feel the improvements we made over time have helped coax the best out of our vineyards. This process has resulted in birth of our flagship wine – The Creek.

Moon Curser Vineyards is a family owned winery located on the East Bench of Osoyoos, a small South Okanagan border town known for its hot summers, lakeside fun and vineyards. The Moon Curser name pays tribute to the gold smuggling history of Osoyoos. Its wines, however, show no such respect for tradition – the winery is known for growing unusual noble red varieties such as Tempranillo, Tannat and Touriga Nacional along with intriguing whites like the Italian Arneis alongside Roussanne and Marsanne from the Rhone region of France. The vines have thrived in Osoyoos and continue to deliver unique, world-class interpretations of these traditional wines. Moon Curser has brought home many a gold medal from Canadian and international wine competitions. OKANAGAN VALLEY SOUTH OKANAGAN: Okanagan Falls & Kaleden This area of the valley was recognized as the second sub-geographical indication in BC allowing certification of wine from this specific region on labels. The region stretches from Vaseux Lake north to Skaha Lake and is home to some of the Okanagan’s most photographed vineyard views. The wineries in the area have formed a collective know as the Corkscrew Drive that celebrates the grassroots approach and unique character of the region’s terroir. Regional Notes: • There are no actual “falls.” Okanagan Falls originally boasted twin falls that fell from where Skaha Lake emptied in the river. The falls were eliminated with a series of dams were constructed to control flooding • There’s a large quirky flea market that operates weekly • Visitors go out of their way to visit the local ice cream and confections shop that gets international rave reviews • The area has a rustic, old world charm and a large collection of antique shops • Vaseaux-Bighorn National Wildlife Area is a mecca for viewing California Bighorn Sheep and a large variety of bird species • It’s a short drive to about half a dozen golf courses Approximate Number of Wineries: 12 Primary Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc First Winery: 1986 18

SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY Cawston & Keremeos Considered the organic and fruit stand capital of Canada, the Simikameen Valley has been touted as the BC winery region to watch. Indeed extended hours of sunshine, coupled with relatively low precipitation best replicate the revered Okanagan Valley where vineyard space is now at a premium. The Similkameen is dotted with ranches, grasslands and valleys and surrounded by mountain slopes. The Similkameen River carves its way through the mostly arid landscape bringing life to the plentiful orchards and vineyards, which thrive beneath the 2,600plus hours of sunshine. Here you find plenty of grape wineries but also excellent producers of cider and fruit wines who take advantage of the abundance of orchards in the area. Regional Notes: • The area has a rich mining history and visitors can still try panning for gold along the Similkameen River • Fly fishing is a popular sport on the river • In Bromley Rock Provincial Park, the river moves gently and offers a cool respite from the summer heat or a lazy float • Cathedral Provincial Park is filled with jagged peaks and sapphire lakes and offers some of BC’s best back country adventures and breathtaking views • The Grist Mill & Gardens is a perfect spot for a family picnic • There are a couple golf courses in close proximity Approximate Number of Wineries: 12 Varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir First Winery: 1984 Pentâge Black Dog

OKANAGAN VALLEY SOUTH OKANAGAN: Penticton & Naramata This region arguably sets the bar for marrying the romantic ideals of a wine region with reality. Its high concentration of wineries located along the south east shores of Okanagan Lake, known as the Naramata Bench, and the north part of Skaha Lake afford unsurpassed vistas and unique wine and farm-to-table food experiences. There are almost 900 acres of grapes planted along this small corridor and the area is a big attraction for cycle winery tours. Regional Notes: • Penticton is nestled between two large bodies of water – Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake, making it a mecca for water sports and offering long stretches of sand beaches. • Apex Mountain and Nickelplate Nordic Centre provide alpine and cross-country skiing. • World-class rock climbing is offered in Skaha Bluffs Provincial Park. • The Penticton River Channel connects Okanagan and Skaha Lake and floating down the 7-km channel is a popular summertime activity and touted as a must do on the Great Canadian Bucket List • If you’re traveling by car along the Naramata Bench, keep in mind there are no service stations along the way or in the village at the end of the road. So fuel up before you go. • There are four golf courses in the area. Approximate Number of Wineries: 41 Primary Varieties: Pinot Noir, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay First Winery: 1990

FACT: The origins of the name Naramata are somewhat unclear. While many Okanagan towns get their monikers from Interior Salish words, there are several legends behind the naming of Naramata by its founder John Moore Robinson, but none have been affirmed historically. The most infamous account is that the name was conjured up during a seance when the voice of a Sioux chief was channeled and he spoke of the love for his wife “Narramattah.” Prior to Robinson acquiring the land, Naramata was actually know as Nine Mile Point, which reflected the fact that the area the village sits on forms a point and is nine miles from Penticton.

A hidden gem on the Naramata Bench, family owned Lake Breeze Vineyards has been producing award winning wines since 1995 with focus on Naramata origin. We are located on the Naramata Bench, 12 kilometers north of Penticton on the lake side of Naramata Road. Okanagan classics like Pinot Gris, Merlot & Pinot Noir and unique grape varietals such as Ehrenfelser, Pinotage, as well as our signature Pinot Blanc, have secured Lake Breeze’s spot amongst the essential Okanagan wineries for both red and white wines. Lake Breeze Vineyards was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Wine of the Year in 2018 for our estate grown Pinot Noir. Pause, relax and savour the breathtaking views of the Okanagan Valley while indulging in a memorable wine country lunch at Lake Breeze Vineyard’s Patio Restaurant. Chef Mark Ashton gets inspiration from fresh ingredients and our surrounding region to create a soulful, casual fine dining experience. Tasting Room open daily, late April to October 10:30 – 5:30. Kettle Valley Steam Railway

OKANAGAN VALLEY SOUTH OKANAGAN: Peachland & Summerland Known for its amazing Lake Okanagan vistas and rolling hills and mountains plus a quaint grassroots vibe, this part of the valley is bathed in extended hours of sunlight that are required for growing the plentiful fruit, but also make these beachside communities the gems that they are. In Summerland, there are a cluster of wineries within a short drive of each other who have banded together to create the “Bottleneck Trail.” In Peachland, there is a collection of wineries located just off Highway 97, the main artery through the Okanagan.

Regional Notes: • These communities offer long stretches of sandy beaches that will appeal to sun worshipers and watersports enthusiasts. Peachland’s Swim Bay is perfect for a day of family fun with its zip line, children’s playground and lifeguard supervised beach area. • Small artisan shops, boutiques, farmers’ and craft markets are a tranquil contrast to the big box stores and shopping centres of neighbouring cities • The Kettle Valley Steam Railway in Summerland offers visitors a taste of this classic mode of travel from yesteryear. • Summerland Ornamental Gardens is a 15-acre heritage botanical garden open year round for walks, hikes, picnics and garden research. • Excellent hiking can be had at Hardy Falls, Pincushion Mountain and Giant’s Head Mountain parks • There’s also an exotic bird sanctuary and zip line adventures nearby. • There are three golf courses in the area. Approximate Number of Wineries: 23 Primary Varieties: Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir First Winery: 1980

The okanagan’s most historic winery • The 1st certified organic winery in Canada • Traditionally handcrafted without any chemicals or additives • 1st icewine producer in North America • Rated top 1% on Vivino • Open April to October daily from 11am to 5pm Authentic European Winery

GOLF ANYONE? British Columbia is the only province in Canada where golfers can hit the links virtually year round. The temperate climate along the South Coast means snow won’t often dust the fairways and greens. But other regions such as the Southern Interior and Sunshine Coast often enjoy weather that will make play possible at least eight to 10 months of the year. Duffers will often boast that in BC, they can golf and ski on the same day. British Columbia’s biodiversity also makes for some of the most incredible playing terrain and backdrops for the province’s golf courses. Swaths of vivid green manicured fairways and greens are often framed by soaring mountain peaks and rocky outcrops, breathtaking canyons and valleys, dazzling lake, river and ocean views, sweeping grasslands, vineyards and orchards, formidable forests and stunning arid desert terrain. Good to Know: • There are now 300-plus golf courses across the province • Professional designers of some of BC’s links include Stanley Thompson, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Doug Carrick, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player • Some tour companies offer “sip and play” packages that will appeal to both the wine and golf enthusiast • Shuttle services are offered to many of the golf courses around BC

OKANAGAN VALLEY CENTRAL OKANAGAN: Kelowna & West Kelowna The Central Okanagan communities of Kelowna and West Kelowna are home to the oldest continually operating winery, which opened in 1932. However, grapes were first planted here in 1859 at the Obelate Misson in Kelowna by Father Charles Pandosy, who used the fruit to make sacramental wine. The idea of grape-growing and wine making was slow to catch on and it wasn’t until the early 1990s that producers began to see the true potential. Today, there is barely a glimmer of these humble beginning, save for the Father Pandosy Mission museum and heritage site. The Central Okanagan is a shining example of a first-class wine region offering top-notch wines coupled with critically acclaimed dining and cultural experiences. Two distinct pockets in the area provide for convenient day-trip touring – The Westside Wine Trail and the grouping of wineries in Kelowna’s Mission neighbourhood. However, there are wineries scattered throughout the region from city centre locations to those tucked deep into the hills overlooking Okanagan Lake. There are also producers of mead, craft beers and ciders, spirits and various fruit wines. Regional Notes: • Kelowna is BC’s largest interior city and its name comes from the Okanagan First Nation word for “grizzly bear” • Home to Big White Ski Resort which is known for “Okanagan champagne powder” • There are plenty of urban and rural hiking trails including those which follow the lake on both the Kelowna and West Kelowna sides. Close-in mountainous trails can be found at Mount Boucherie and Knox Mountain • A short drive will take you to the pristine Okanagan Mountain Park, site of the in famous wildfire of 2003 that became a “firestorm.” The park has been rejuvenated since with fresh flora that has brought back several species of wildlife • The scenic Myra Canyon Trestles, which are part of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, attract cyclists and hikers from around the globe • Beaches and waterfront parks are plentiful • The westside’s Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park is a working heritage farm growing close to 800 nut trees and shrubs that produce walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts, butternuts, buartnuts and heartnuts • There are 18 golf courses in the area Approximate Number of Wineries: 37 Varieties: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay First Winery: 1932

Kalamalka Lake: Tourism Vernon, Thomas Bullock

OKANAGAN VALLEY NORTH OKANAGAN: Lake Country, Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby & Grinrod The North Okanagan offers a diverse ecosystem that provide distinct character to the wines that are produced here. From Lake Country where more than half a dozen vintners are making wines of world-class character on the steep slope along the Okanagan Lake shoreline, to Vernon and Enderby where a growing collection of producers are embracing the unique cool-climate terroir. This is a wonderful region to embark on a day-trip visiting wineries and taking in the varied landscape that includes the vast Okanagan Lake, the aquamarine waters of Kalamalka, the urban life of Vernon and the rich grasslands south of Enderby. Regional Notes: • Lake Country comes by its name honestly, as it is home to numerous bodies of water including Duck Lake, Wood Lake, Kalamalka Lake and Okanagan Lake • The grasslands of the North Okanagan are still home to several working ranches and some offer dude ranch experiences • Kalamalka Lake’s stunning turquoise waters are courtesy of Calcium carbonate deposits which form crystals that reflect the sunlight and create vivid colours. Some say the deposits have healing properties • Silver Star Mountain Resort outside of Vernon features a picturesque village and hosts an annual summer wine festival • This area is well know for its ice-fishing • There are about a dozen golf courses in close proximity Approximate Number of Wineries: 20 Primary Varieties: Pinot Gris, Siegerrebe, Pinot Noir, Marechal Foch, Zweigelt First Winery: 1997

SHUSWAP Salmon Arm, Tappen & Celista Considered the house-boating capital of Canada, the Shuswap Lake system features 1,000 km of shoreline and is home to the largest houseboat fleet in the country. But the region is now coming into its own as an emerging wine area. It’s considered one of the most northerly grapegrowing regions in North America, however, the wineries are revered for having their own unique microclimates and character-filled wines. Regional Notes: • There are four arms to Shuswap Lake • The area is known for its charming boutiques and thriving artist community • Home to the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival which attracts more than 25,000 people to the region every August • Protected waterfront trails are connected by boardwalks and tranquil pathways and offer excellent sightseeing and bird viewing • Herald Provincial Park and Margaret Falls are a testament to the awe-inspiring terrain in British Columbia. The trail leading to the falls passes through a rock chasm that’s drawn comparison to an enchanted forest • The region is agriculture rich and in addition to wineries, there are farm tours available • There’s a Fungi Festival every year featuring walks and talks about the various mushroom species growing in this rich, ecological landscape • There are 10 golf courses just a car ride away Approximate Number of Wineries: 10 Primary Varieties: Kerner, Siegerrebe, Marechal Foch, Zweigelt First Winery: 1997

THOMPSON VALLEY Kamloops Thanks to its more than 2,000 hours of annual sunshine, the Thompson Valley is an up and coming wine area with 107 acres of grapevines. Its agriculture rich roots also make it ideal for the production of ciders and other assorted fruit wines. The area is anchored by the city of Kamloops, which is the second largest in the British Columbia interior, and is nestled along the scenic banks of the North and South Thompson Rivers. The region is considered one of the province’s most biodiverse, featuring jagged peaks, lakes, rolling golden grasslands, volcanic landmasses and valleys. Regional Notes: • The name Kamloops is taken from the Shuswap word “Tk’emlups,” meaning “meeting place” • The area is dotted with stunning craggy sandstone columns known as “hoodoos” • The annual Kamloopa Powwow is one of Western Canada’s largest celebration of indigenous culture. The 40th annual event is being held in 2019 • There’s a wildlife park featuring artic wolves, lynx, eagles and a Kermode “spirit” bear • Sun Peaks ski resort hosts an annual Icewine festival • Mount Robson is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies • Wells Gray Provincial Park features Helmcken Falls, which is almost 2.5 times as tall as Niagara Falls • There are about 20 golf course dotted throughout the region Number of Wineries: 4 Primary Varieties:Pinot Noir, Marechal Foch, Chardonnay, Riesling First Winery: 2012

FRASER VALLEY & GREATER VANCOUVER More than half of British Columbia’s total farm industry is located in the Fraser Valley, so it should come as little surprise that it is also a great place to grow and make wine. The valley itself is a patchwork of barns, silos and swaths of fields and vineyards with the Fraser River winding its way through the core. This vast region also includes Metro Vancouver and, thus is the perfect mix of urban meets rural for visitors who want it all. There are wineries scattered throughout, in the city proper as well as Delta, Surrey, Langley/Aldergrove, Abbotsford, Richmond and New Westminster. They include grape wineries that focus on making fresh, fruit-forward wines, but also produce alternative fruit wines, mead, craft cider, spirits and beer and even sake. Regional Notes: • Metro Vancouver has a population of 2.46 million and is home to the Vancouver Canuck NHL hockey team, the Vancouver Whitecaps MLS soccer team and the BC Lions CFL football team. It’s a place to see big name concerts and has a thriving film industry • The region is home to the largest gatherings of wintering eagles in the world • There’s an annual tulip festival • Stanley Park offers over 1,000 acres of natural beauty in the middle of Vancouver along the seawall • The annual salmon run on the Fraser River is an awe-inspiring attraction • Steep mountains and canyons are a big attraction for hiking, rock climbing, alpine biking and skiing • There are in excess of 100 golf courses in and around Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Approximate Number of Wineries: 40 Primary Varieties: Siegerrebe, Pinot Gris, Bacchus, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay First Winery: 1991

VANCOUVER ISLAND & GULF ISLANDS There’s a long history of winemaking on Vancouver Island, stretching back to 1920 when loganberries were used to produce the earliest bottles. In the 1980s, the region took advantage of a government-funded trial to transition to grape-growing, but ciders and fruit wines are still very popular products, as are mead, craft beer and spirits. Although located on the coast, Vancouver and the Gulf Islands have microclimate pockets that enjoy plenty of sunshine. Wineries in the Cowichan Valley, for example, get protected from ocean storms by adjacent mountains, yet their proximity to the sea extends the growing season due to the low risk of frost. Wines on the Gulf Islands are made on Salt Spring, Pender, Saturna Quadra, Gabiola, Hornby, Denman. The wineries are small, quaint mom and pop-style operations and echo the artistic laid-back vibe of the islands where the boho lifestyle thrives. Regional Notes: • Access to the Gulf Islands is by ferry or float plane. Travel to Vancouver is by ferry or air • Proximity to the ocean means outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy whale-watching, deep sea fishing, kayaking, sailing • Vancouver Island is anchored by the city of Victoria, a historical and heritage rich seaside community and the capital of British Columbia • Known for agritourism, there are plenty of farm tours and farmers’ markets • Victoria has a large ornamental garden • Only a few hundred residents live on some islands • Unique ecosystems include Garry oak growth forest, sandstone formations • Food scene focuses on regional, seasonal fare with a strong push toward organic ingredients • There are more than 60 golf courses on Vancouver and the Gulf Islands Approximate Number of Wineries: 32 Primary Varieties: Pinot Noir, Marechal Foch, Pinot Gris, Ortega, Siegerrebe First Winery: 1992

KOOTENAYS One of the newest wine regions in the province, grapes were first planted in 1995. Surrounded by the Selkirk, Monashee and Purcell mountain ranges, it’s an area best know for being rugged and wild, filled with lakes, rivers, waterfalls, rocky mountains and wildflower-filled meadows. It’s a highly sought after region for back country adventurers. Grape wineries and cideries can be found in the Creston, Castlegar, Rossland, Burton, Skookumchuck and Trail areas. Number of Wineries: 7 Primary Varieties: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay First Winery: 2001

Regional Notes: • It is the closest BC wine region to the Alberta border • It features several world-class ski resorts • The area is a mecca for heli-skiing, rock climbing, hiking and biking, caving, zip-lining, white-water rafting and kayaking • There are several mineral hot springs • Charming and quaint mountain towns with a laid-back vibe are the norm here • Castlegar features a sculpture walk • There’s a ghost town • The area is known for “eco” retreats • There are more than two dozen golf courses throughout the Kootenays

KOOTENAY REGION

Fact: The Columbia River gives life to many parts of the Kootenay region. Snaking through to the Pacific, it is the same mighty waterway once taken by famed explorers Lewis and Clark.
