B.C. Wine Country If you were to visit B.C. Wine Country every year for the next 10 years, chances are you still wouldn’t cover everything it has to offer. That’s because there are almost than 250 grape wineries (299 if you include those which make other fruit wines) in the province, offering unique experiences and thousands of signature wines. It’s culturally, naturally diverse and the unique terroir from the Gulf Islands to deep in the interior make for scores of eclectic wines. Once considered an up-and-coming region, B.C. Wine Country now tops lists of notable international wine destinations. It’s a magnet for its natural beauty, its enduring hospitality, its varied culture and countless attractions. Your inspiration for visiting British Columbia may be its wine, but depending on the length of your stay you may be compelled to step off the wine trail and take in some of its other incredible experiences and attributes. The province is loaded with options for those with an adventurous mind. Consider a whale watching, fishing, zip line or gold panning excursion. Climb a mountain, take a hike or cycle a trail. Take a train, floatplane or helicopter tour. Relax by setting aside time for a trip to a botanical garden, hot spring, lavender farm or cheese maker. Consider also that B.C. is home to a desert interpretative centre, old growth forests and marine-life migration points. It’s a golf and ski mecca, offers world-class fishing, snowmobiling and boating opportunities and some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere. The area is also teeming with a diversified arts and cultural community that continues to flourish and enrich the experience of visitors. There are ballet companies, theatre groups, galleries and museums. You’ll find symphonies, chamber orchestras, jazz clubs and French cultural centres. The streets are home to public art. The parks are filled with buskers and craftspeople. There are thriving multicultural organizations, which embrace the province’s undeniable First Nations heritage or embrace the traditions of the region’s newcomers. There are countless festivals dedicated to music, theatre, art and wine, and ones that combine them all. B.C. is really coming into its own with its food scene. Restaurants in the province are in a unique and enviable position when it comes to sourcing food. Ideal growing and farming conditions, coupled with abundant natural resources allow for chefs across B.C. to easily source regional and seasonal goods. This includes the endless bounty of orchard fruit; earthy wild vegetables like morel mushrooms, asparagus and fiddleheads; wild game like venison, quail and duck; fresh local cheeses; seafood and fish such as salmon, oysters and spot prawns. B.C. is the ideal place to practice the 100-mile diet, as so much is easily and naturally produced within that radius just about anywhere in the province. And a lot of it is organic and sustainable. Many wineries, which once offered only wine to those who appeared on their doorsteps, now have added cultural and food components to their venues. Several have in-house restaurants. 4

Some have outdoor amphitheatres, which provide concert series or theatre productions during the summer months. Some have onsite art galleries featuring local artisans. Others offer cooking classes and educational wine seminars. Getting back to the wines, there are an abundance of crisp and aromatic whites, luscious Icewines, assorted dessert wines and an endless flow of ripe and juicy reds. The varied winegrowing pockets of the province deliver micro-climates that make it possible to grow a broad range of varieties not previously expected to thrive. So not only will you find plenty of Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Ehrenfelser and Pinot Noir, but the vineyards are filled with Syrah, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes that truly deliver in the glass and have wowed enthusiasts and critics worldwide. There are more than 10,000 acres of planted grapes, comprised of 80+ varieties, compared to 2,100 acres two decades ago. And the ratio of red to white is 51 to 49 per cent, with the top planted grape being Merlot. B.C.’s wine industry is in a very strong growth pattern. More than 60 new wineries have opened their doors in the last five years alone. Numbers aside, B.C. wines are impressing consumers and critics where it counts the most – in the glass. The hardware from international competitions is piling up and it’s rare when wines from the province get shutout. Local wines have captured the imagination of Hollywood stars and royalty. Perhaps the only complaint regarding the wines from the province is their availability – or lack thereof. While one’s cup runneth over while on tour in B.C., out-of-country enthusiasts haven’t been able to find very much of the product when they return home. But there are initiatives being taken to change all that. For example, the B.C. Wine Institute recently established an e-commerce retail outlet for U.S. consumers – winebcusa.com. The site garnered the attention of The Village Voice in New York City, which praised B.C. for having “Vivid pinot noir, chiseled syrah, savory cab franc, and attractive Bordeaux blends.” The writer was so impressed with what the region has to offer, he advised readers to “Go there, and bring along a big suitcase.”

Wine Tour Handbook to British Columbia
Harvest 2014 People often wonder why a wine made in the same style by the same producer using the grapes from the same vineyard often tastes quite different from year to year. The short answer to that is weather. The best wines are primarily made in the vineyard, so Mother Nature plays a critical role in how the final product will show in the bottle. Each year, grape growers are at her mercy. The 2014 growing season turned out to be another banner year for vintners in British Columbia. Early spring was warmer and drier than the norm and bud break was slightly ahead of schedule. There was a little late spring rain, but not enough to impede growth and that was followed by a long, warm and dry summer – perfect conditions to ripen the fruit. The evenings were cool enough to guarantee healthy acid levels for balance. Véraison – when grapes change colour – occurred in early August and growers began picking fruit the last week of August, mirroring the harvest of 2013, which was the earliest on record. Across the province, there were few complaints as fall wrapped with moderate temperatures and little rain. With the harvest for table wines put to bed by the end of October, vintners turned their thoughts to Icewine. And they didn’t have to wait long. On November 12, temperatures dipped below the required -8˚C prompting two wineries to brave the cold and collect the frozen grapes for their liquid gold. It was the second earliest day on record. The earliest Icewine harvest in B.C. was November 5, 2003.

B.C. Liquor Laws On April 1, 2015, changes came into effect in British Columbia permitting the sale of B.C. wine in grocery stores. This new law has been long anticipated by consumers who endorse the concept of the one-stop shop – pick up the ingredients for your dinner and purchase a bottle of wine to go with it. This landmark transformation isn’t going to happen overnight. Just one British Columbia grocery store was set up to begin selling local wine when the law went into effect. But it’s just one of the sweeping changes to liquor laws in the province in recent years. For visitors to B.C. Wine Country, some of the things you might look forward to that have been made possible with the changes include the tasting and sale of B.C. wines at local farmer’s markets. These markets selling farm and orchard fresh food have long been a draw for tourists and the addition of local wines and craft beers will add to the experience with regional flavours. When dining out, you’ll also be able to enjoy a bottle of B.C. wine that you’ve picked up on your wine tour courtesy of the BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) program at many local restaurants. You may also notice that on-site tasting venues at wineries have been expanded, allowing for wine consumption in vineyards, picnic areas, etc. Other recent changes: • No more cordoned-off “beer gardens” at festivals, giving tipplers more freedom to roam. • Visitors permitted to carry alcoholic beverages - such as a glass of wine from the lobby or hotel bar - to their room. • Room service hours for liquor sales extended at hotels. • The return of “Happy Hour” in B.C. – permitting discounted alcohol sales during a specific time period at licensed establishments. • Children permitted in dine with their families in pubs. • Patrons may take home unfinished bottles of wine from a bar or restaurant. • Refrigerated coolers for beer and wine in several British Columbia government liquor stores.

FAQ’s
Answers
How many distinct wine areas are there in British Columbia?
There are five Designated Viticultural Areas (DVA) in the province – Okanagan Valley, Similkameen Valley, Fraser Valley, Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island. The industry has also recognized four emerging regions: North Okanagan, Shuswap, Thompson Nicola and West Kootenays.
What is the total wine production in B.C. now compared to 20 years ago.
In 2014, 27,919 short tons (2,000 lbs) of grapes were harvested with a total production of almost 21 million litres of wine. In 1995, 8,108 short tons were picked for a total production of just under 5 million litres.
Is it true that all wines get better with age?
Putting wines away for future drinking does have many rewards. Most good wines tend to sell out long before they’ve reached their prime. So unless you already have them, an aged wine is next to impossible to find. However, many wines shouldn’t be cellared in the first place. The belief that all wines get better with age is a myth. Aromatic B.C. whites, like Gewurtraminer and Ehrenfelser, or simple light-bodied reds, like Gamay, are designed to drink young. You lose all their fresh, fruity goodness over time. And wines that can be aged, should not be cellared indefinitely. Be cautious of putting away a bottle on your wedding day to open on your silver anniversary. It may not be fit to even dress your salad. Cellaring wine is an investment and, like all investments, research and planning is key.
9
When should you decant wine?
These are the reasons to do it, in order of importance: 1. To separate wine from sediment, which is often found in aged reds. 2. To “aerate” a harsh, tannic or immature wine - hoping the oxygen will open it up and soften the harder, astringent characteristics. 3. Aesthetic - some think a decanter is more attractive than a bottle.
How long can you keep an open bottle of wine?
As long as it tastes good! Typically, you’ll lose some freshness and quality after about 24 hours. Keep open wines in the refrigerator even the reds - it will slow down oxidation. Let reds warm up to room temperature or drink them slightly chilled – that’s lovely too.
Why do they call Oliver the “Wine Capital of Canada?”
The moniker is actually a self-designation adopted by the area’s tourism promoters, but it comes by the claim honestly. Oliver has more than 200 vineyards, comprising of almost 3,700 acres. It makes up for more than 35 per cent of the total vineyard area in British Columbia. However, when it comes to the number of wineries, the PentictonNaramata area has the highest concentration with 45.

Wine Buying Tips How often do you find yourself staring at a sea of unfamiliar wine labels, having no idea which bottle to choose? Indeed, the reason why most wine consumers return to the same bottle of wine again and again is because they have a reasonable expectation of how it’s going to taste. Buying an unfamiliar wine is a gamble. Until you get it home and pour yourself a glass, you have no idea whether you’ll like it or not. Discovering that it’s not to your taste is not only disappointing, it’s a waste of your money. That’s why touring B.C. Wine Country is such a treat. Not only are you getting a great experience, but you’re also discovering new and exciting wines in the region’s many tasting rooms. But is there a way to make good wine choices even if you haven’t had the opportunity to try them first? Here are some tips: There are nine basic styles of wine – Zesty white, rich white, off-dry/sweet white, rosé, light red, medium red, full-bodied red, sparkling and dessert wine. Full- bodied reds: More oak, higher in tannin and alcohol; Bold, rich, inky with jammy black fruit and/or earthy Varieties/Styles: Cabernet Sauvignon, and savoury character; May need some Syrah/Shiraz, Malbec, Petit Verdot, cellaring to mellow Bordeaux-style blends
Medium Reds: Some oak, moderate alcohol, mellow tannin; elvety texture, deep berry fruit, chocolate, Varieties/Styles: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, herbal; Long-term aging not required; Sangiovese, Cab-Merlot Blends Light Reds: Light use of oak, moderate alcohol, mellow tannin; Bright and fresh, red berry fruit, silky Varieties/Styles: Pinot Noir, Gamay texture, bright acidity; Drinkable young, some wines are very elegant; Rosé: No oak, light alcohol, no tannin; Runs the gamut between sweet to bone dry. Bright acidity; No Varieties/Styles: Wines made from red grapes (Pinot Noir, Gamay are common) cellaring required. Good food wine; tend to be drier. Red/white blends (Blush) can be on the sweet side.

Wine Tour Handbook to British Columbia
Thompson Okanagan a unique experience
The tourism motto for the province is “Super Natural British Columbia,” but you truly get a sense for what that means in the Thompson Okanagan. Here you’ll find the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies, a waterfall double the height of Niagara Falls and Canada’s only desert. Factor that in with a thriving fruit growing industry, countless pristine beaches, boating waterways and fishing lakes, abundant flora and fauna, scenic walkways, hiking and biking trails, campgrounds, ski resorts and golf courses. Then, of course, there’s the wine. The Thompson Okanagan is home to Canada’s Wine Capital. The area has a thriving agricultural, cultural and historical vibe. It is teeming with artists and foodies, farms, museums, orchards and vineyards. It is deeply rooted in a First Nations heritage but also embraces eclectic culture of its European settlers. It is not uncommon to observe the unique celebrations of the multicultural communities that exist in the Thompson Okanagan. All that is evident in the wines and the wineries. There are Swiss, French, German, American, Australian, New Zealand, Italian, First Nations and more, influencing the wine making in British Columbia, making it a truly multicultural industry. Yet, wines from the Thompson Okanagan are unique in that they represent their soil and growing conditions. Local growers and producers pride themselves on embracing what the land has to offer, year to year. That makes each vintage a unique experience and brings wine enthusiasts back to B.C. wines again and again.

South Okanagan: Osoyoos & Oliver
The most southerly region of the Thompson Okanagan is a lush landscape populated by acres upon acres of orchards and vineyards making it a veritable paradise of plenty when it comes to fruit and wine. In the spring, every corner of this area comes alive with stunning blossoms, followed by the intense green foliage and eventually the vines and trees are hand heavy with the bounty of the season’s fruits. From July through October, you’ll find roadside stands offering fresh cherries apricots, peaches, pears, plums and apples. And, of course, year round wineries will offer up their own bottled bounties made from the grapes and selected tree fruits harvested each year. It might surprise you that under normal circumstances little would grow here. The Oliver/ Osoyoos area is in a desert belt – an extension of the desert region stretching up from Mexico. Cacti and rattlesnakes are more at home here and there’s an interpretation centre where visitors can experience Canada’s only desert and explore First Nations culture. Fertile ground for growing grapes and fruit has been made possible by determined farmers using irrigation, which has given new life to the South Okanagan. The area’s extended days of heat and sunshine has made it possible to grow varieties not previously possible north of the U.S. border. Oliver is known as the Wine Capital of Canada. And while that is a self-designation by the municipality, the area comes by it rightly with the highest concentration of wineries and vineyards of any where in the country. No self-respecting wine enthusiast would visit here without out at least considering a tour of the area.

Moon Curser Vineyards is a family owned winery located on the East Bench of Osoyoos, a small South Okanagan border town celebrated for its hot summers, lakeside fun and world-class vineyards. The Moon Curser name pays tribute to the gold smuggling history of Osoyoos. Its wines, however, show no such respect for tradition – the winery is known for its unusual noble red varieties such as Tempranillo,Tannat and Touriga Nacional along with intriguing whites like the Italian Arneis alongside Roussanne and Marsanne from the Rhone region of France. Moon Curser has brought home many a gold medal from Canadian and international wine competitions. Of particular note was the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards Trophy for Best Canadian Red Wine awarded for its 2009 Border Vines. Thompson Okanagan
South Okanagan: Okanagan Falls & Kaleden Similkameen Valley: Cawston & Keremeos
When you come across the community of Okanagan Falls, don’t be surprised if you have one of those Toto-we’re-not-in-Kansas-any-more feelings. Less than 20 minutes south of Penticton, Okanagan Falls is relaxed, laid back, rustic-even, drawing on the appeal of a simpler way of living. You won’t find any big box stores here, but if you’re in need of some retail therapy, you’ll be delighted by the eclectic mix of antique stores and craft shops, not to mention the flea market that runs from March through November. There are also beaches, trails and parks to explore. In case you’re wondering, the “falls” themselves don’t actually exist. Originally, the hamlet featured twin falls that fell from where Skaha Lake empties into the river, however, in the 1950s a series of dams to control flooding were built, reducing the falls into a series of rapids. Nonetheless, the area a huge draw for nature lovers as a large selection of wildlife lives in the area, with many unique desert flora and fauna for naturalists to explore. A bird sanctuary is situated at Vaseux Lake just south of the town, complete with an interpretive centre. Don’t be surprised to find a herd of Big Horn Sheep perched on rocks by the roadside. Okanagan Falls is also home to the Corkscrew Drive, a sizeable collection of grassroots wineries with distinct approaches to wine. Many of the producers on this trail have embraced their unique terroir to craft wines with individual signatures to critical acclaim. You’ll find biodynamic, quirky and passionate producers here. For the hardcore wine enthusiast, it’s a must visit.

Southwest off Highway 97 and you’ll find the Simikameen Valley, self described as “off the beaten path, eclectic, out there and edgy.” It is certainly worth the visit. Situated on the banks of the Similkameen River that breathes life into the otherwise arid grasslands, it’s rich in a pioneering spirit and the “cowboy way” of life still thrives on ranches and farms throughout the area. There’s also a mining history and hopeful prospectors are still drawn to the river’s edge to pan for gold. You’ll come across colourful fruit stands and farms, 40 per cent of which are organic. And the Similkameen Valley has been recognized as wine region onto its own right, with an increasing amount of wineries that produce both grape and fruit products in the bottle. They’ll make you think twice about what is possible with the region’s bounty. The Similkameen boasts scores of accessible fishing lakes along with the remote backcountry terrain of Cathedral Provincial Park, a major attraction to adventure seekers looking for unparalleled experiences and breathtaking views. History buffs will be drawn to the old frontier-like atmosphere and landscape.

Thompson Okanagan South Okanagan: Penticton, Naramata, Summerland & Peachland
The communities of Peachland, Summerland, Penticton and Naramata wrap around the southern portion of Okanagan Lake and offer vineyard settings with stunning water views. Enthusiasts will find a vast concentration of eclectic wineries as they follow the lake – some right off the main highway and others slightly off the beaten path, but never too difficult to find. As their names suggest, Peachland and Summerland are both picturesque, peaceful retreats bathed yearly in ample sunshine and located right along Highway 97 between Kelowna and Penticton. Both offer clean waterfront access to beaches, marine parks and docks. In Peachland, one of the most popular attractions for families is Swim Bay, which has a zip line, lifeguard supervision and a children’s playground. There are also plenty of walking, hiking and biking trails, not to mention several small to medium-sized wineries. Summerland boasts the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, a historical attraction that will delight groups and families. Nature lovers will enjoy Giant’s Head Mountain, ornamental gardens, agricultural research centre, and the salmon hatchery. But for those here for the wine don’t miss the “Bottleneck Drive” wine route, a meandering path leading enthusiasts to plenty of quaint wineries.

South Okanagan: Penticton, Naramata, Summerland & Peachland
This area offers a truly grassroots feel and artistic vibe. Expect to be entertained by local musicians, and enjoy the works of artists and crafters. This is an area rich in creativity. It’s also a foodie’s paradise, with local producers and restaurateurs embracing the concept of the 100-mile diet – regional cuisine that promotes local, seasonal ingredients. Urbanites with a taste for wine will no doubt be drawn to Penticton – which is ideally situated between Okanagan and Skaha Lakes, making it the ultimate water-lovers paradise. It’s a city with a small town feel appealing to all types of travellers. Families will love the beaches and the river channel in the heart of the city down which you can float on tubes and other personal inflatable devices, an activity that has been listed in the book titled, The Great Canadian Bucket List. The City of Penticton is renowned for its festivals and special events including the Fest of Ale, Peachfest, Pentastic Hot Jazz Festival, Elvis Festival and the Challenge-Penticton Triathalon. Signature events for the Okanagan Fall Wine Festival are also held here. Adventure travellers will appreciate that they’re only minutes from Skaha Bluffs, a climber’s paradise that has garnered international recognition. Just a short drive through the city and around the north side of Okanagan Lake and you’ll find yourself on the Naramata Bench, a pastoral vineyard mecca with stunning water views. Here is where you’ll find one of the highest concentrations of wineries in the valley, taking full advantage of the setting, the climate and unique terroir that is the measure of a great wine. The Naramata bench is Nirvana for the daytripper and if you don’t mind the occasional hill climb, this is a sensational destination for a winery tour by bicycle.

Thompson Okanagan
Central Okanagan: West Kelowna & Kelowna
When Father Charles Pandosy first planted grapes in the Central Okanagan back in the 1860s, nobody had an inkling of the future that lay ahead. Indeed, winemaking in British Columbia had a very humble start – dedicated simply for the making of sacramental wine for Pandosy’s tiny parish and grown on questionable vineyards at the Oblate Mission near Kelowna. What was produced served its purpose. But nobody would argue that those products would set the worldwide wine community on its heels. Still, they set a stage that would eventually lead to a wine-growing revolution in the province. Today, the Central Okanagan is regarded as a major urban centre of the Thompson Okanagan, indeed Kelowna is the largest interior city with a population of just over 100,000. But there is still a thriving agricultural community and winemaking is at its heart. As far as destinations go, the Central Okanagan has a lot to offer. The region has two distinct communities – Kelowna and West Kelowna, separated by William Bennett Bridge at the narrowest point of Okanagan Lake. There is the convenience of an urban setting for all those who crave modern conveniences. Yet the area teems the scenic wonders of the eclectic outdoors that will appeal to adventurers. Within city centres, there are miles of sandy beaches hugging Okanagan Lake, convenient for families and sun worshipers. But minutes away are hiking and biking trails. The region is home to a growing number of wineries, ranging in size from tiny cottage-style to larger but still intimate by most standards. There are plenty of options for accommodations, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, arts and cultural activities, historical attractions and much more to be had on both sides of the lake. There are also dozens of golf courses, trails and nature preserves ever nearby. Okanagan Lake itself is a veritable liquid playground with amenities for waterskiing and boarding, windsurfing, paddle boarding, parasailing, jet-skiing, fishing and more. For those who

love boating, there are scores of beaches, coves, and parks to explore that are accessible by watercraft. Maps are available that identify public areas, campsites and buoys in case you want to anchor on the water over night. On the Kelowna side of the lake, you’ll find Okanagan Mountain Park, the site of a devastating fire that swept down the mountainside in August 2003, torching hundreds of homes, forest and parkland, even destroying many of the popular Myra Canyon railway trestles that were a hit with hikers and had survived Mother Nature’s wrath for more than 80 years. Yet, new life has been injected in the park and it is once again a sought-after backcountry area for hiking, biking and camping. The canyon trestles have been restored and once again open for everyone’s outdoor enjoyment. An interconnected corridor of parks and walkways follow Kelowna’s downtown waterfront and along West Kelowna’s Gellatly Bay area (including a local nut farm) - perfect for a leisurely sunset stroll after dinner. Speaking of which, the region has really stepped up its game in the food department and today many eateries get rave reviews by local, national and international diners and critics. Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Kelowna, you’ll find Big White Ski Resort, a winter and summer destination renowned for its champagne powder snow and family-friendly vibe. New for 2015, the scenic Bullet Chair will be providing sightseeing and hiking experiences starting in July. On the west side of Kelowna there are alpine options and excellent groomed crosscountry ski trails for those with fitness goals and an adventurous nature. For the hardcore wine enthusiast, several clusters of wineries are located along the lake off Boucherie Road in West Kelowna and in the southeast part of Kelowna city. And you’ll also find one of the oldest and largest wineries right in downtown Kelowna. If you want a look back at winemaking history, a piece of the industry’s past still lives on with Father Pandosy’s mission heritage site in Kelowna, where you’ll find his chapel still standing.

North Okanagan: Lake Country, Vernon, Armstrong Shuswap: Enderby, Salmon Arm
Imagine sipping a chilled glass of crisp B.C. wine while relaxing on the deck of a houseboat as it glides across a scenic, pristine lake. You’ll find this and more in the Shuswap, which features a lake system encompassing more than 1,000 kilometres of shoreline and is home to the largest houseboat fleet in the country. This region is an ecological gem filled with alpine meadows, dense forests, rolling trails and waterways. Amid this natural habitat you’ll find smatterings of grass-roots communities with charming cafes and boutiques and an active and inspiring artist culture. It’s overall population is small, but swells in the summer with tourists attracted to the region for houseboating, camping, fishing and for the August music extravaganza called the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival that features both popular and up and coming artists. Those looking for a marine-centred getaway, there are numerous park campgrounds where exploration abounds through trails along the forested Shuswap Lake shoreline. Another draw is the Adams River salmon run in October when observers get a chance to see millions of sockeye salmon return to spawn. Nature lovers will appreciate Salmon Arm’s waterfront trails through a protected sanctuary featuring boardwalks, paths, a bird viewing tower and a Nature House. Then there’s Margaret Falls, which passes through a rock chasm and offers an enchanted forest feel. There’s a unique ecosystem of flowers, trees and shrubs and the water from Reinecker Creek cascades down a sheer rock face creating a natural shower. There’s also a hidden cave in the rock behind the falls. The Shuswap has a deeply rooted farming community and food enthusiasts are invited to do a farm tour that also includes the charming wineries of the area. It’s a terrific way to explore the regional food culture. Further south, is the most northerly point of vast and diverse Okanagan Valley. They’ll get their first glimpse of Okanagan Lake, which stretches 135 kilometres and fills much of the valley floor. The North Okanagan features rich grasslands which brought ranchers to the valley and dude ranch experiences are available for adventurers who want to the chance to work the land. But if you’re an urban cowboy or girl, the city of Vernon offers up great shopping and dining in close proximity to agritourism experiences. This is also serious lake country – in fact, one community in region is called just that. So there are countless ways to enjoy the water no matter, whether its trolling for your lunch in a quiet bay, trying out a waterski ramp, or just taking in the view while sipping a fine wine with your significant other on the patio of a local winery. One dazzling attraction in the North Okanagan is Kalamalka Lake, a large body of water on south side of Vernon where calcium carbonate deposits form sparkling crystals that reflect sunlight, creating breathtaking blue colours in the water from deep navy to vivid aquamarine. There are sandy beaches and stunning rock faces plus a 2,420-acre provincial park. It’s paradise for anyone who appreciates nature

Predator Ridge Resort is home to two of the Okanagan’s finest golf courses with a variety of accommodation choices. Silver Star Mountain Resort beckons with an all season playground. In the colder months, it’s a playground for snow sports and offers a colourful picturesque village feel. In the warmer months, it offers alpine meadows full of wild flora and fauna, perfect for hiking, cycling, or merely strolling. Plus, the mountain hosts a summer food and wine festival in August. It’s a must go for just about every type of traveller. Finally, on the most southern tip of the North Okanagan, you’ll find Lake Country, and the name suits it well. There’s everything here for those who love the water, with a collection of lakes that will welcome boaters, fishing and water sports enthusiasts. Plus this is where visitors traveling from the north will start to see a growing concentration of wineries, all within a short drive from each other.

South Thompson: Kamloops, Gold Country
The Kamloops/Thompson Region may be the most northerly area within B.C. Wine Country, but it enjoys more than 2,000 hours of sunshine annually and often records some of the warmest temperatures in Canada on any given day during the growing season. This fact is not lost on the winemakers of the region who have put their faith in the area being an up and coming hotbed for wine production. Indeed, it is just coming into its own with four family-owned wineries. But enthusiasts can count on a personalized experience and share in the passion and determination of the pioneers who are undaunted by any perceived challenges. After all, when winegrowing began in B.C. decades ago, there were plenty of naysayers and few – even those who took the plunge – predicted it would reach the level of excellence it has achieved today. The vintners who set the course were considered to be risk takers and mavericks at best; foolhardy and doomed at worst – but they proved the critics wrong and history speaks for itself. There’s a lot to love about the Kamloops/Thompson region. Anchored by the Thompson River, where you’ll find lush vineyard lining the banks, this area is rich in First Nations culture and cowboy lore. It’s ideal for the wine-loving backcountry adventurer as there’s boundless access to pristine wilderness and remote fish camps. In fact, a visit to a vineyard can often accompanied by at wildlife viewing experience. In the north is where you’ll find Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies and Wells Gray Provincial Park, which features Helmcken Falls, higher than Niagara and plunging a breathtaking 141 metres down a narrow canyon.

Venture west into Gold Country and 20 provincial parks beckon with a vast array of landscape that will appeal to nature lovers from semi-arid desert to thick forests with lakes, grasslands, meadows, river canyons and mountains. The region offers a unique way to explore these natural features through geocaching offering a unique experience and is ideal for group travellers. Couples can enjoy a one-of-a-kind luxury wilderness experience that combines old-world dude ranching with new age wellness. It won’t escape your notice that sage is prominent in the Kamloops/Thompson region – this aromatic herb grows wild with abandon, filling the air with it’s intoxicating scent. And exotic and stunning rock formations, known as the Hoodoos, provide an enchanting backdrop and the opportunity for exploration for the adventurous. If cityscapes are more your thing, make your way to the South Thompson and Kamloops, the second largest metropolitan area in the B.C. interior. Fine dining, nightlife, shopping and worldclass golfing await. But don’t forget to take note of the south’s stunning valleys and plateaus formed by volcanic land masses and rivers. And beautiful Sun Peaks, a four season resort, is less than an hour’s drive away from the city and offers world-class skiing and year-round outdoor activities. It’s the site of the annual Winter Okanagan Wine Festival, a great option for wine enthusiasts travelling with their families. Accessing wine country via the Thompson region would be a fantastic way to kick off a winesoaked tour of the Thompson Okanagan. Tasting the region’s unique terroir while taking in its diverging landscape will guarantee an unsurpassed sense of place. Privato Vineyard and Winery

Nestled in a valley surrounded by soaring mountains and dense forest, the Fraser Valley is an area rich in agricultural roots. In fact, more than half of the province’s farming industry is located here. It’s only about an hour to downtown Vancouver, but you won’t feel much of the city’s influence in the valley. It’s a grassroots and hard-working community with a much slower pace than its bustling neighbour to the west. 60

Fraser Valley
There more than 20 wineries scattered between Chilliwack and Richmond that are considered part of the Fraser Valley wine growing region, although several are actually in the Metro Vancouver region. Producers focus on making fresh fruit-forward wines but also obtain grapes from the Okanagan to create fuller bodied offerings.
This region has a lot to offer travellers such as great mountain climbing, salmon fishing, white water rafting, zip lining, biking and hiking trails for those with an adventurous spirit. Romantic couples can enjoy an escape to Harrison Hot Springs, while families will appreciate the many attractions such as various aquatic and recreation centres, historic sites, parks and campgrounds. Nature lovers will be drawn to Mountain View Wildlife Conservation and Breeding Centre and Bridal Veil Falls. Vancouver Island & Gulf Islands
Can you imagine yourself paddling along an ocean shore and watching killer whales rising and diving beneath the serf?
Then think about visiting farms and tasting food fresh from the farm. Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands wine regions are magical places where wine growing and food production is often family-based and deeply passionate. There are multiple wineries on the big island mostly concentrated in the Saanich Peninsula and Cowichan Valley, which are blessed with microclimates that are drier and more favourable to winegrowing then one might think on the “wet coast.” You’ll find another several wineries on the neighbouring gulf islands of Saturna, Thetis, Hornby,

Salt Spring and Quadra. The lifestyle on the islands is laidback, carefree, unhurried, unpretentious, artistic and that is apparent in their approach to wines.
Vancouver Island & Gulf Islands
Vancouver and the Gulf Islands have a longer growing season, a lower risk of frost in the spring and fall and little or no snow in the winter. These areas are more suitable for growing aromatic whites and lighter-style reds. But fine wines are also being made from tree fruits, berries and even honey. Many island producers purchase grapes from the Okanagan to make fuller-bodied wines. This area is a naturalist’s dream with natural wonders galore – cliffside hiking trails, Garry oak ecosystems, sandstone formations. Adventure lovers can partake in experiences unique to the coast such as ocean kayaking and diving, deep sea fishing and whale watching tours. For families there are plenty of beaches, campgrounds and festivals and events year round. Those with a boat will appreciate the fact that many of the most pristine natural areas can only be reached by the water. The Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, for example, covers 33-square kilometres of parkland on numerous islets, reefs, and islands. Nature cruises, boat charters, sailing tours, and saltwater fishing charters are options to get out on the water. Agritourism is very strong in this area with a focus on the 100-mile diet and organics. You’ll find roadside stands and farm-gate shops offering up fresh local produce, honey, spring lamb, cheeses, and, of course, wine. Urban dwellers can opt to stay in Victoria, a beautiful seaside city with a central harbour and an Old World charm. The area teems with heritage architecture and stunning garden displays. It’s a place here high tea is a ritual and a laid-back attitude is a must. It’s an ideal spot for a romantic getaway complete with horse-drawn carriage rides and fine seaside dining.
Semper Vinus Vineyards
One might have never imagined finding a winery in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, but today there are five. It’s better known for being a rugged, pristine area filled with lakes, rivers, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, meadows and mineral hot springs.
Kootenay Region
But grapes were first planted in 1995 and today the West Kootenays is a small but emerging wine growing area. Wine enthusiasts will enjoy the quaintness and the pride the vintners have in their products. But most of all they will appreciate the fact that the producers pushed incredible boundaries to coax the grapes from the soil to the glass and have a determination to make world-class wines. The West Kootenay is an outdoors person’s ideal. There are hectares upon hectares of undeveloped terrain, waterways and natural habitat providing unsurpassed exploration, flora and fauna observation and activities such as climbing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking and biking, hang gliding, and more. There are also excellent golf courses and ski resorts. This is a region with an adventurous spirit, a friendly vibe and an ecosystem consciousness. The people here take pride in their land and work hard to preserve it. Families will delight in the West Kootenays. The area teems with festivals and events, campgrounds, playgrounds and historical attractions. But romantic couples will also be drawn to the charming bed and breakfasts, mineral hot springs and scenery. 63

wine + Golf Predator Ridge Golf Resort
British Columbia’s gorgeous landscape, vistas and climate are ideal for growing grapes and making world-class wine. But those stellar attributes also make it a mecca for another great passion – golf! In fact, there are as many golf courses in the province as there are wineries, so you can combine not just one great passion, but two. It’s an ideal destination for couples, families and groups with mixed interests. While some might be focused on touring and tasting their way through B.C. Wine Country, other members of your party might want to soak in the landscape and climate on a different plane. The multitude of golf courses offer experiences for all abilities and desires. More often than not though, travellers are looking to get the most out of their limited leisure time by expanding their destination experiences. And vacationers are catching on that if they enjoy both golf and wine, then visiting British Columbia is a great way to get their chip and your sip on, You can’t beat B.C.’s natural beauty – teeing off with a backdrop of mountains, lakes, ocean or desert landscapes is simply unsurpassed. Today, you are just as easily to have a view of a vineyard when golfing in the province, which makes it über easy to hit the swing and sip on the same day. Tour operators have recognized this trend and have begun developing package options that reflect a dual interest. Individual golf courses are also promoting B.C. wine by offering winery tours direct from their facilities. But the proximity of many of the region’s golf courses to the wineries, particularly in the Okanagan-Similkameen, means you can spend a few hours on the links then roll out on a wine tour on the same day with ease. So if your time in B.C. is limited there is no reason you can’t enjoy golf and wine to the max. When playing the following courses, consider these suggested wineries in your itinerary. b.c. living
Predator Ridge Golf Resort
Anyone who has ever enjoyed their vacation has imagined pulling up stakes and moving to that destination. And why not? If you love the place and want to be here, why wouldn’t you want to live here? Indeed, beautiful British Columbia is one of the most desirable places to live in Canada. Whether it’s oceanfront, city, farm, lakeside, island, mountain side, small town, golf course, or even desert living you seek, B.C. can deliver your dreams. The province quite possibly has the most eclectic terrain in all of country. Where else would you find a desert region where cacti bloom within a few hours drive of the ocean where orcas roam? There are numerous reasons to consider moving to B.C.: • Stable real estate prices – While many parts of the country fluctuate with economic changes, B.C. is an anomaly, being strong even when economic and employment stats falter. • The scenery – Just about every part of the province has something breathtaking and indescribable to offer. As you turn each corner you’re bound to come across snowcapped peaks or deep crevasses and valleys; stunning views over water or long expanses of vineyard; majestic old growth forests or twinkling cityscapes. Almost every view is better than the last. Pack your camera. • The water – B.C. has the Pacific Ocean and countless interior rivers, lakes and creeks. There’s endless choice for the hardcore fishing enthusiasts, and watersports and boating junkies, as well as for individuals and families who merely want to play in the surf or sunbath on the beach. • The wildlife – B.C. is the most biologically diverse province and home to an eclectic mix of wildlife species including several that are rare or unique to British Columbia, such as the white Kermode or “Spirit” bear and the burrowing owl. Native animals include big horn sheep, bison, caribou, killer whale, grizzly bear, bobcat, cougar, bald eagle, sea otter, peregrine falcon and sea lion, just to name a few. • The environment – The people of B.C. are pretty “green” folk. In fact, Economist magazine consistently ranks Vancouver as one of the top three most liveable cities in the world based on this very fact. • The wine – Enough said.
