FIRST WE ARRIVED IN THONON LES BAINS STATION. WE EXITED THE STATION AND MADE OUR WAY TO THE CITY CENTRE.
ARRIVING THE CITY PLAZA in thonons les bains
WE WALKED ALONG THE LAKE PROMENADE ON THE WAY TO THE CITY.
WE INTERVIEWED YOUNG BOYS IN THE PLAZA. THEY TOLD US ABOUT THEIR PARENTS’ WORK AND WHAT THEY WANTED TO BE WHEN THEY’RE OLDER.
THEIR PARENTS ALL WORKED AWAY FROM THONONS. EITHER IN GENEVA OR thonon THEY TOLD US THEY WANTED TO BECOME PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES.
WE SPOKE TO SOME RETIRED LADIES AS WELL. THEY MENTIONED THAT THEIR GRAND CHILDREN ALL MOVED AWAY AND WORKED IN PARIS AND SWITZERLAND
WE THEN TOOK A TRAIN TO PERRIGNER. IMMEDIATELY BEYOND THE STATION WERE recycling INDUSTRIES... IT WAS LATE AND THE AREA WAS QUIET. WE DIDN’T HAVE MUCH TIME TO HEAD TO THE CITY CENTRE. SO WE TRIED TO FIND SOME PEOPLE IN THE VICINITY.
in regions like Paris, Perpigan, morzine, laroche and the sun was setting as we took the ferry back to lausanne...
WE CAME ACROSS THESE PEOPLE FROM THE VILLAGE. THEY TOLD US THAT THEY WERE NOT HAPPY WITH THE RISE IN HOUSE PRICES DUE TO SWISS PEOPLE MOVING IN. THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE VILLAGE DID NOT SUPPORT THE RISE IN POPULATION

- Four little interviews with inhabitants of Bas-Chablais - Sunday 23th of February 2020 -
Three young teenage boys - Thonon-les-Bains The three boys go shopping for clothes in Geneva sometimes. Usually, the parents work in Switzerland and live in Thonon. It's quiet here, there are more people during the week than at weekends. The parents are a nurse in Geneva, a nurse in Annemasse, a social worker in Thonon (homeless, battered women) and a waitress in Geneva. They go to Geneva by train with the Léman Express (before they used to use the car). They don't know people working in agriculture personally. They don't really know people from the villages of the Bas-Chablais, like Perrignier. They like to go skiing in Les Gets, Morzine, Avoriaz. They are in college. One wants to be a handball player in Champéry. The other two don't know but they're doing a course that mixes classes and football. They go by bus to the football pitch in 5 minutes.
Two retired old ladies and one grand-mother - Thonon-les-Bains
One of the retired ladies was a saleswoman in department stores in Paris and Lyon but now lives in Thonon-Les-Bains. The other did some cleaning in the hospital of Thonon. The last one is still active and works as a shopkeeper in Thonon. She runs a children's clothing shop. Their children are in Paris, Perpignan, Morzine, Laroche, Annemasse (in the region). Their children work in Geneva like many others. There is work in France but people go to work in Switzerland to get a better salary. The sons went to Paris because they found work there. The main industries of the region are Evian, Thales and then people come in season for winter sports, the city needs waiters, salesmen, personal service. The farmers are rather on the periphery of Thonon but they don't earn much. Otherwise people go out of the city and we go to walk in the mountains to have fun but it's badly connected, there are no buses.
One mother and her two young boys - Thonon-les-Bains
They come from Evian-les-bains and walk around in Thonon. The mother is a sales assistant close to Evian. The children are in college. Their father is a salesman in Geneva and comes back to Evian every evening with his company car. He suffers from traffic but needs the car to present and sell his products. They stay as much on the French side as on the Swiss side of Lake Léman. They like to discover the region as soon as they have free time. They are of Italian, German and French origin and chose to settle in Bas-Chablais to raise their children 10 years ago. The region is very beautiful because in summer there is the lake to swim, the mountains to climb, in winter they go skiing and snowshoeing. The mother knows Þshermen on the lake, people who have cows but not especially farmers. In Marin, a lot of wine is produced on the hillsides. There are a lot of studios and small apartments close to the mountains but most of the people living in the area go skiing for the day. The region is a bit expensive because Switzerland is so close. Many people go back and forth to earn more money and go home to sleep on the French side. In Thonon there are thermal baths but they are much smaller and less known than those in Evian. In Yvoire, a small medieval village, the summer is very touristic. It's very pretty and there are festivals. What is missing would be a highway to link Evian to Geneva to relieve the traffic but this is not desirable from all points of view as it would denature the village side of the region. It would also damage the landscape. The new train line is good but there is not enough frequency. Also, people don't necessarily take it because the timetables don't match their office hours. What is also missing are the superior schools. There is a hotel and business school in Thonon, but that's all. The others are in Annecy, Grenoble, Geneva or Lausanne. There are 14-year-olds who have to spend the whole week elsewhere and come back at the weekends to study. As a result, some families move when the children are older and move closer to the big cities but the rents are more expensive. You have to choose.
One man, his daughter and his friend - Perrignier The Þrst is a truck driver and lives near Thonon-les-Bains. Public transport is terrible, there's always a strike. Moreover, on Sundays the buses do not work. He feels like he lives in this region because he has no choice. The other man used to work in Geneva but the company has closed down. He admires the organisation of Geneva, the transport, the clean streets, etc. He says that on the French side there is work in all kinds of Þelds but people don't especially take it because the Swiss salary is more attractive. He knows a lot of people who work in recycling (paper, plastic, a bit of everything). There is a large waste disposal center in Thonon, a smaller one near Perrigner. Both come from the North of France but moved to the Bas-Chablais region at the age of 10 to go where there is work. The cost of living should be cheaper. The political situation between
