Don’t miss this month’s must-see programs! The Barnes Collection

Friday, August 3, 9pm Follow Dr. Albert Barnes’ remarkable rise from Philadelphia’s working-class neighborhood to the top of the modern art world. This unique tale follows the late Dr. Barnes as he travels the world to collect works of art by some of history’s most famous artists. The film digs deep into the intricacies of each painting, offering a look at the collection and the Philadelphia museum that houses it.

Marilyn Monroe: Still Life

Thursday, August 9, 9pm Marilyn Monroe was, arguably, the most photographed person ever. This program tells her story through interviews with her photographers and through the photos themselves, an ageless testament to her grace, guts and sexiness — her humor and vulnerability. She understood their power and she exploited it. Though she died 50 years ago, Monroe persists in her iconic image.

NATURE: Kalahari: The Great Thirstland

Wednesday, August 15, 8pm For years, the Kalahari Desert can appear to be one of the most barren wastelands on earth. But its swirling hot sands hold unseen treasure — an abundance of life brought forth by a brief season of storms. Butterflies, termites and locusts burst forth in staggering numbers. Most impressive is the giant bullfrog — the size of a dinner plate with a voice to match, this amphibian waits out the dry years entombed deep underground.

Market Warriors

Monday, August 20, 9pm A new series from the producers of ANTIQUES ROADSHOW! In each episode, four pickers travel to different markets and antique hubs across the country to purchase items with a set amount of money, and use their knowledge and skills to see who can make the most profit at auction.

PBS CONVENTION COVERAGE: Republican National Convention

Wednesday, August 29, 8pm & Thursday, August 30, 8pm Award-winning political journalists Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill will co-anchor gavel-to-gavel broadcast coverage from the PBS Skybox at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. (August 27 – 30).

PBS Marks Cooking Legend and Cultural Icon Julia Child’s 100th Birthday Cooking legend and cultural icon Julia Child introduced French cuisine to American kitchens in 1963, with the pioneering public television series THE FRENCH CHEF. Unlike anything ever seen on television before, it was entertaining and real in a way that influenced every culinary television program that followed. In her passionate, capable, and approachable way, Child changed the way Americans cook, eat, and think about food. She was a natural television star, warm and exuberant and ready to share all of the lessons she had learned from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and her years of work on her groundbreaking cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Never afraid to make mistakes on camera, she used them to her advantage to show her viewers how to adapt with confidence.

In honor of what would have been Julia Child’s 100th birthday on August 15, 2012, PBS stations across the country will show original blackand-white episodes of THE FRENCH CHEF from the 1960s. Watch classic Julia Child programs on wipb2 Create, digital channel 49.2, August 18-19.
