New support for major gifts and planned gifts

S

upport for our programming and the shows you love comes in many forms. We’re lucky to have dedicated members whose gifts each year help sustain WIPB. The station also benefits from planned gifts — a key part of WIPB’s mission now and into the future. A charitable bequest through the WIPB Legacy Society is one of the easiest and most significant ways to benefit the station. This planned gift, such as a bequest made through your will or a gift of life insurance, enables you to make a larger gift to WIPB than you may have thought possible, while providing financial security for you and your family. Some donors choose to make an immediate, large gift of $1,000 or more. Those who can help at this level are joining forces in our Visionary Circle, which is just now being formed. “We’re doing this in recognition of the fact that some people are ready now to make that very sizable commitment,” says Lori Georgi, membership and community engagement manager. “We want to recognize that but also help organize their efforts. This helps the station not only with our ongoing operations but gives us the chance to look toward the future and see how we might better serve our members.” Supporters make their gifts after careful thought, Lori says. They think of their support as an investment in their community, not just in terms of strictly charitable giving. “Major gifts and planned giving are another level of long-term support that helps us plan for the future. These are

relationships that our supporters make not only with the station but with our community and its needs.” Genet Soule has come on board to specialize in major gifts and planned giving. For more information, contact Genet at (765) 285-5403 or Lori at (765) 2852982 or toll free, 800-252-9472.

WIPB receives grant for local cancer engagement

WETA has awarded WIPB Public Television a $10,000 station engagement grant for Ken Burns Presents: The Story of Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies. The series will air on WIPB in April 2015. WIPB will partner with Cancer Services of East Central Indiana-Little Red Door to engage our community in a meaningful conversation about cancer and expand on their existing cancer education program for high school students. A special one-hour edition of WIPB’s WELLNESS MATTERS devoted to cancer is planned to highlight local resources and tell stories of our neighbors and friends living with cancer. THE STORY OF CANCER: The Emperor of All Maladies is a three-part, six-hour major television event from preeminent documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. Based on the 2010 Pulitzer Prize winning book The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, the series is the most comprehensive documentary on a single disease ever made. More information is available at www. thestoryofcancer.org.

49.2 Weekend Marathons October 4 & 5 - Hispanic Heritage Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the sights, sounds, and tastes of Latino culture! Learn how to cook three different types of tacos with Pati Jinich. Experience the sights of Madrid with Rick Steves, and hear the sounds of Columbia with Jacob Edgar. And don’t forget Mexico, where Rick Bayless combines eating and sightseeing for a complete cultural immersion. Ole! October 11 & 12 - Lidia’s Kitchen No celebration of Italian-American culture is complete without Lidia Bastianich. Step into her kitchen for your personal cooking lesson. Lidia covers it all: Salad, dessert, brunch, seafood, comfort food, and heart healthy foods. She even puts her own spin on the classic hamburger. October 17 & 18 - Pasta Paradise This National Pasta Day, tune in to Create and celebrate with a marathon of pasta-centric dishes! Laura Theodore experiments with unique and unusual noodles on Jazzy Vegetarian. Mike Colameco takes us behind the scenes of some of New York’s most innovative pasta restaurants. October 24 & 25 - Beyond the Sea Jerry Yarnell demonstrates how to paint a lighthouse scene step-by-step. Interested in watercolors for water paintings? Gary Spetz will show you how to paint the Sea of Cortez. And what would a painting marathon be without Bob Ross? Watch him create a rowboat that’s ready to set sail.
