Calling all kids...Writers Contest now open! The PBS KIDS Writers Contest is now accepting entries! Designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through handson, active learning, the Contest is made possible in part by local financial support from Mutual Bank and empowers children in grades K-3 to celebrate creativity and build literacy skills by writing and illustrating their very own stories. How the Contest Works Beginning Jan. 1, children can submit their entries to the PBS KIDS Writers Contest. WIPB will select local winners and award prizes in the spring of 2014.
The local winners will then be entered into the national contest where a panel of esteemed judges will rank the top 12 entries. National winners will be announced during the summer of 2014 and the winning stories will be featured on pbskids.org/ writerscontest. The national winners will receive prizes courtesy of national prizing sponsor, LeapFrog®, makers of the LeapReader® Reading & Writing System. To enter the Contest and for more information on entry rules and contest resources visit www.wipb.org
The contest is also made possible through national promotional support from Highlights for Children®. The PBS KIDS Writers Contest is produced by PBS and based on the Reading Rainbow® Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, a concept developed by WNED-TV Buffalo.

Sundays at 9pm Season 4 of the international hit finds aristocrats coping with last season’s shocking finale. Change is in the air as three generations of the Crawley family have conflicting interests in the estate. Paul Giamatti makes an appearance alongside the beloved returning ensemble, including Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Joanne Froggatt, guest star Shirley MacLaine and others.
American Experience “Poisoner’s Handbook”
Tuesday, January 7, 8pm In the early 20th century, the average American medicine cabinet was a would-be poisoner’s treasure chest: radioactive radium in health tonics, morphine in teething medicine and potassium cyanide in cleaning supplies. While the tools of the murderer’s trade multiplied as the pace of industrial innovation increased, the scientific knowledge (and
Unlocking Sherlock
Sunday, January 12, 10pm This program explores how writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss created the television hit Sherlock, taking Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original adventures of the Victorian super sleuth and transforming them into a worldwide sensation. The two take viewers through the versions of Holmes that have inspired them -- the original stories, the factual inspirations, the thousands of film versions -- to arrive at the thoroughly modern Sherlock.
American Experience “1964”
Saturday, January 14, 8pm It was the year of the Beatles and the Civil Rights Act; of the Gulf of Tonkin and Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign; the year that cities across the country erupted in violence and Americans tried to make sense of JFK’s assassination. Based on The Last Innocent Year: America in 1964 by award-winning journalist Jon Margolis, this film follows some of the most prominent figures of the time — Lyndon B. Johnson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Barry Goldwater, Betty Friedan — and brings out from the shadows the actions of ordinary Americans who turned the country onto a new course.
news 3 spotlight Great Performances at the MET “Eugene Onegin”
Friday, January 17, 9pm Acclaimed English director Deborah Warner’s new production of Tchaikovsky’s most popular opera is directed by her longtime collaborator Fiona Shaw and conducted by Valery Gergiev. Anna Netrebko reprises her role debut as Tatiana, the naïve heroine of Pushkin’s classic novel.
Start Up
Saturday, January 18, 8pm ”Please Don’t Feed the Monsters, They are Already Stuffed!” Gary and the crew venture to Chicago and Cleveland. Last, they head over to Indianapolis, to visit the people who started “Promise Monsters,” a toy company that’s spreading kindness with every monster that leave their shop.
Masterpiece Classic “Sherlock”
Sundays beginning January 19 at 10pm Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in three new episodes of the contemporary reinvention of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic, written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss.
American Masters “Salinger”
Tuesday, January 21, 9pm AMERICAN MASTERS’ 200th episode features interviews with 150 subjects, including J.D. Salinger’s friends, colleagues and members of his inner circle who have never spoken on the record before, as well as film footage, photographs and other material that has never been seen. The film is the first work to get beyond the Catcher in the Rye author’s meticulously built-up wall and the secrets he left behind after his death in 2010.
Hawking
Wednesday, January 29, 10pm This is the intimate and revealing story of Stephen Hawking’s life. Told for the first time in Hawking’s own words and with unique access to his home and public life, this is a personal journey through Hawking’s world. The audience joins him at home as he “wows” a packed theatre audience.
