This Month’s Must-See Programs Constitution USA with Peter Sagal

Tuesdays at 9pm Peter Sagal, the smart, sharp-witted star of NPR’s popular Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! breathes new life into the traditional civics lesson. Over the course of the four-hour series, Sagal hits the road, travelling cross country on a customized red, white and blue Harley-Davidson, to find out where the Constitution lives, how it works, and how it unites us as a nation. From New York to San Francisco, from Missoula, Montana to Tyler, Texas, Sagal visits dozens of cities and small towns across America introducing viewers to some of today’s major constitutional debates— free speech in the digital age, same-sex marriage, voting rights, separation of church and state, presidential power in the post-9/11 world, to name just a few—and the fascinating stories of the people they affect every day.

Wellness Matters “Wellness in the Workplace” v

Thursday, May 2 at 8pm Host Glenn Augustine talks with Chuck Gillespie, Program Director of the Wellness Council of Indiana and Jane Ellery, Associate Director of the Fisher Institute of Wellness and Gerontology about wellness initiatives in companies and organizations. They discuss how company culture can improve with employee wellness, highlighting four local companies that successful promote wellness in the workplace.

Saving the Ocean “Swordfish!”

Saturday, May 4 at 8:30pm From overfishing to pollution to climate change, the world’s oceans are under siege. But there’s reason for hope. Marine biologist and author Carl Safina offers up a refreshing change to the usual doom-and-gloom “environmental” news in this series that focuses on stories about people and communities around the world who are making a positive difference. Viewers accompany Safina around the world as he reveals fascinating and unexpected stories of hope and innovation, such as that of the threatened shark or leatherback turtle.

Tuesday, May 7 at 8pm The story of Jesse James remains one of America’s most cherished tales ... and one of its most fictitious. Jesse James, so the legend goes, was a Western outlaw, though, in fact, he never went west; America’s own Robin Hood, though he robbed from the poor as well as the rich, and kept it all for himself; and a gunfighter whose victims, in reality, were almost always unarmed.

Less heroic than brutal, James helped invent his own valiant legend.

Annie Oakley: American Experience

Tuesday, May 14 at 8pm As the star attraction of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, Annie Oakley thrilled audiences around the world with her daring shooting feats, becoming an American legend. But that legend had little to do with the real Annie Oakley. Although famous as a Western sharpshooter, Oakley lived her entire life east of the Mississippi. A champion in a man’s sport, she forever changed ideas about the abilities of women, yet she opposed female suffrage.

Her fame and fortune came from her skill with guns, yet she was a Quaker.

Secrets of the Manor House

Sunday, May 19 at 10:30pm A hundred years ago, the world of the British manor house was a world of luxury and privilege that has provided a majestic backdrop to a range of movies and costume dramas, most recently in the popular MASTERPIECE Downton Abbey. Look beyond the fiction to the truth of how life was in these ancient British houses, and how mounting financial, political and social pressures were about to bring momentous changes to both the wealthy and their servants.

National Memorial Day Concert

Sunday, May 26 at 8pm On the eve of Memorial Day, join co-hosts Joe Mantegna (“Criminal Minds”) and Gary Sinise (“CSI: New York”) for a night of remembrance featuring an all-star line-up performing with the National Symphony Orchestra. The 24th annual broadcast of the NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT airs live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol before a concert audience of hundreds of thousands, millions more at home, and to our troops around the world on the American Forces Network.
