First Grader Wins PBS KIDS GO! Writer’s Contest Muncie local, Krzemienski, was one of twelve national contest winners.
T
welve children were selected as national winners of the PBS KIDS GO! Writer’s Contest last month; one of which was Edward Krzemienski, son of Beth and Ed Krzemienski. The first grader from East Washington Elementary School, Muncie, was awarded first place and an iPad for his story, “Jim’s Crazy Bus Week.”
“We are proud of the accomplishments of these talented young writers and illustrators, and offer our thanks to all of the children that participated,” said Lesli Rotenberg, Senior Vice President, Children’s Media, PBS. “This annual event is one of the ways that PBS KIDS and our local stations help build children’s creativity and improve literacy skills in a fun and engaging way.” PBS KIDS GO! Writer’s Contest was an initiative designed to promote the advancement of children’s reading skills through hands-on, active learning. There were four age categories: kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade. For the first time, students could submit there stories digitally through a tool developed by StudentPublishing.com. Every student who used this tool received a free animated digital book of their story.

WIPB Telesale Tradition Marks 35th Year Sponsors, donors and volunteers sought for the April event
T
he excitement and great deals of WIPB Public Television’s auction, Telesale, celebrates its 35th year. The event runs online October 23-November 3 and is broadcast live, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., ThursdaySaturday, November 1-3 on wipbHD 49.1. Proceeds from Telesale help support the educational, entertaining and informative programs on WIPB. The volunteer-driven fundraising auction is currently seeking merchandise donations for the fall event. “As we move into fall and winter, our viewers are starting to think more about holiday gift giving, restaurant certificates and health and beauty items,” states Pat West, Telesale coordinator for WIPB. “We would love to have local merchants donate related items to use for this fall’s auction.” Auction donors receive special recognition during Telesale, including a listing of the
donated item and company in the Telesale print promotional materials. Donors of higher value items ($350 and up) receive a video promoting the item, which will air multiple times during the auction, promotion on the WIPB Telesale website and recognition in the Telesale print promotional materials. Many donated items may be tax-deductible for the businesses donating them. Volunteers are needed to fill a variety of positions prior and during Telesale. “Volunteering during Telesale is a fun way to meet people,” encourages Alice Van Dyke, WIPB general manager. “It’s a great way to see a live, fast-paced television production and to be a part of an exciting fundraising event.” To volunteer or donate, call Pat West at 1-800-252-9472 or email pwest@bsu.edu.
WIPB Hosts 2nd Annual Amazing Quest
Join the Muncie community for an adventure to 5 delicious mystery destinations
W
IPB’s second annual Amazing Quest “Food for Thought” will be held on Saturday, October 27, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with check in starting at 9:30 a.m. in the Letterman Building at Ball State University. This event is designed for adventurous people ages 10 and up that will travel throughout Muncie to learn about food, family, hospitality and generosity. There will be five mystery locations around town that each group will travel to.
Although this is a quest, it is not a race. Along the way, the participants will learn, taste, discover and be inspired to think about the role food plays in all of our lives. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring food donations (nonperishable items) with them to this event, that will be given to the Muncie Food Pantry. Participate for only $25 per team (as many as four people). Register online at wipb.org or call 800-252-9472.
