With the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region expected to generate over half of the world’s energy by 2030, leading data and analytics company GlobalData reports that energy decisions made by the leaders of APAC countries in the next few years will have a significant impact on the battle against climate change.

As economies grow, so will consumption - such growth is often reliant on increasing the use of fossil fuels. GlobalData’s latest report: ‘Tech in 2030 –Thematic Intelligence’, reveals that the APAC region is expected to experience the highest growth in energy production with power generation rising 3.9% every year between 2022 and 2030, compared to the 1.8% in Europe and 1.4% in North America. There are concerns about whether renewable development will be able to keep pace.

Robert Penman, Thematic Analyst at GlobalData, tells IPA: “Traditionally, growth has been reliant on increasing fossil fuel use, which is at odds with the burning need to decarbonise and limit the effects of climate change.

“Climate change will increase energy demand and consumption even further. For example, air conditioning systems will be increasingly necessary around the world. The APAC region has some incredible potential for renewable development, but it is clear that the decisions made by leaders in this region between now and 2030 will be felt all around the world.”

Acorss the Asia-Pacific region China, Mongolia, and Australia hold the greatest largest potential for renewables in APAC. The APAC region is expected to generate 43% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030, driven by investment in China and Australia, as well as the high potential in Mongolia.

Penman concludes: “China is a clear winner when it comes to renewables in the APAC region. It has invested heavily in both solar and wind, and its highly productive companies will export these technologies and the necessary infrastructure worldwide. Meanwhile, Australia will benefit greatly from the energy transition as it has access to key raw materials and enormous solar power potential - useful for hydrogen production. Last, but not least, Mongolia has the potential for 2.6 terawatts of renewable energy production. Major advances in battery storage would allow significant energy exports from this country.”

APAC and the MEA are the only regions which are projected to not exceed 50% generation from renewables/low carbon sources by 2030.

WITH COAL ADDED, INDONESIA’S ENERGY MIX REACHES 64% IN 2022-3

The share of coal in Indonesia’s energy mix increased to 64% from 61% in 2022-3, meeting the electricity needed, following a 6.6% year-on-year rise in electricity demand, reports the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Around 13GW of coal-fired plant projects have been in the pipeline from 2021 to 2023. However, the Just Energy Transition Partnership is expected to speed up the phase-out of coal-fired output in the mid to long term. ‘There is a freeze of the current planned pipeline of coal-fired plants’, comments the report.

“Other targets in this framework to accelerate the decarbonisation of the power sector include achieving peak power sector emissions by 2030 of no more than 290 (metric tonnes of carbon dioxide), and reaching a share of 34% of renewables in the generation mix by 2030,” explains a spoikesman for the IEA.

Around 20% of the country’s energy mix is composed of renewables led by hydropower, geothermal and biofuels, whilst gas-fired output made up 15%.

In November 2022, Indonesia, the Asian Development Bank and a private power firm said publicly teaming up to refinance and prematurely retire a coal-fired power plant, the first such project under a groundbreaking carbon emissions reduction programme. The 660-megawatt Cirebon 1 power plant in West Java is currently being refinanced in a US$250 million to US$300 million deal.

IN BRIEF

MOST GAS-FIRED PLANTS IN CHINA & VIETNAM

China and Vietnam led the markets with the most gas-fired power plant build-out last year, says a report by Global Energy Monitor (GEM).

FULL COMMERCIAL OPERATION BY JULY 2023 FOR THREE POWER PLANT PROJECTS IN CHINA

In 2022 Siemens Energy entered into separate agreements with Guangdong Energy Group and Shenzhen Energy Group to deliver a total of four H-class combined cycle power units to their power plants located in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in southern China.

The new and updated power plants - due for completion in a matter of a few months - will help to meet the growing power demand in the region. In addition, with the one-hundredth unit sold, the projects also mark a milestone in the story of the SGT-8000H gas turbine.

Under the agreement with Guangdong Energy, Siemens Energy will deliver a 675MW combined cycle power generation unit, including a SGT5-8000H gas turbine, a steam turbine, two generators and related auxiliary equipment, and long-term maintenance service for the plant in Guangzhou owned by Guangdong Yuehua Power Co.

The existing coal-fired power plant will be upgraded to a modern, higher-efficiency gasfired plant, reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by more than 60 %. It will generate 2.3 billion kWh of energy annually and is expected to go into commercial operation in mid-2023.

The agreement with Shenzhen Energy includes supplying three H-class combined cycle power units for the Phase II project at the Dongbu plant and the upgrade project at Mawan power plant. The scope includes three SGT5-8000H gas turbines, three SST-5000 steam turbines, three SGen5-3000W generators, and auxiliary systems.

The two projects, both located in Shenzhen, are scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2023 and in mid-2024 respectively. The annual total generation of the two plants is expected to exceed six billion kWh.

With a population of over 70 million, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is among the most dynamic regions in China. It is intended that GBA will grow into a global sci-tech innovation centre and a role model of sustainable development for the country. As early as December 2019, Siemens Energy and Shenzhen Energy agreed on a strategic partnership in the areas of R&D and smart and green energy for the projects.

China has 117.21 gigawatts (GW) of gas plant projects in varying stages of development; whilst Vietnam has 76.94GW. These are followed by Brazil (61.72GW), Bangladesh (40.55GW), and the US (38.77).

Overall, the global capacity in development increased by 22% to 748GW year-on-year. GEM noted these cost an estimated US$601b in capital expenditure.

“The boom in gas plant construction risks creating an ‘age of gas’ that will last for decades and make the climate crisis worse,” Jenny Martos, Project Manager for the Global Gas Plant Tracker, explains.

“Aiding this expansion is the continued conversion of coal to gasfired power stations at a time when we should be rapidly shifting away from fossil fuels, not prolonging their use.”

Currently, a few gas-fired power plants are being retired because they are unable to stop and start quickly enough.

However, most existing gas-fired power plants remain profitable, especially in countries without a carbon price, due to their dispatchable generation and because shale gas and liquefied natural gas prices have fallen since they were built.

PROTOTYPE HYDROGEN ENGINE SUCCESSFUL IN RECENT CHINA TRIALS

China Yuchai International Limited has announced that the company’s YCK05 hydrogen-fuelled engine achieved stable ignition and operation in a recent demonstration at the Beijing Institute of Technology.

The YCK05 engine is the first operating hydrogen engine for commercial applications in China. This successful achievement is another Yuchai hydrogen technology milestone in the development of hydrogen energy as an environmentally-friendly alternative system, following the introduction of Yuchai’s hydrogen fuel cell technology.

The YCK05 hydrogen-powered engine adopts a number of advanced special technologies such as high-pressure multi-point inlet air injection technology, high-efficiency low-inertia turbocharging technology, high-efficiency lean burn combustion technology, etc. The engine design upgrades the engine structure and its subsystems such as the combustion and gas distribution systems.

Yuchai took the lead in initiating the research and development of hydrogen-powered engines for China’s domestic & commercial markets and recently strengthened its scientific research cooperation with the Beijing Institute of Technology.

Yuchai will use its extensive experience and advantages in the research and development of internal combustion engines, to develop a solid process to transform hydrogen-powered engine developments into large-scale mass production of these engines.

It is hoped that the YCK05 hydrogen engines may be applicable in the power generation sector and also in bus, municipal, sanitation, logistics and distribution

markets. Hydrogen power is eco-friendly and helps the environment making it one of the best option for providing power to generators.

A hydrogen power generator is unique in how it works. In the generator, the hydrogen in placed inside a container with two metal plates.

After which, the plates will become charged, either with an electrical current or by a chemical reaction. This process will cause the H2 to be removed from the liquid and a byproduct which will not be used by the generator.

The H2 will be used in the hydrogen fuel cell. The hydrogen fuel cell will be use the H2 as its source fuel to generate an electrical current that will be the power for the generator. Hydrogen will produce less pollution, and less greenhouse gases, than fossil fuels. Hydrogen power is more efficient that the other types of power generators.

They are also more convenient because of their lightweight fuel cells with no moving parts. The system is also quiet when it is running. Hydrogen power will help the environment. Hydrogen will allow China to stop depending on foreign oil.

The disadvantages of hydrogen power, is that hydrogen is a carrier rather than a source of energy.

Hydrogen must be separated from its sources, like water; this can be inconvenient. Hydrogen is costly to covert to liquid because it is a gas. Hydrogen is the lightest of all the elements, and it is difficult to covert to liquid because it will dissipate quickly. Also hydrogen conversion will require fossil fuels for the process.

What hydrogen could mean to China’s economy

Hydrogen power is an important step for China’s domestic engine industry to transform away from current internal combustion technology as the country implements its goal to improve the environment.

Mr. Weng Ming Hoh, President of China Yuchai, commented: “With our advancements in developing hydrogen-powered engines, we have expanded to become the domestic enterprise with the largest engine technology portfolio consisting of traditional internal combustion engines, gas-powered engines, hybrid engines, and new energy power technologies.

“We look forward to the full commercialisation of hydrogen-powered engines in the future to meet the needs of our diversified customer base and to contribute to improving the environment.”
