PLAN TO LEASE FLOATING POWER PLANTS TO OVERCOME POSSIBLE ELECTRICITY SHORTFALLS

Germany is at risk of ‘catastrophic’ power shortages as result of the Rus sia’s embargo on gas and oil supplies. According to an internal report by Germany’s civil protection agency, prolonged power shortages would disrupt the supply of vital goods in the country. Accordingly, the government has taken steps to lease floating power plants from KARPOWERSHIP, a company based in Turkey, suggest some media reports.

As the owner, operator and builder of the world’s only Powership fleet, Kar powership uses these floating power plants to generate electricity and supply countries around the world. The company has 5,000 MW installed capacity and another 3500 MW is under construction or in the pipeline.

When asked about what the company is doing to advance LNG’s role in the energy transition, Mehmet Katmer, Business Development Director, Karpowership, commented on his company’s global LNG-to-power projects: “We have spent many years pioneering the combination of robust LNG-power plants with ships capable of deploying anywhere in the world within accelerated timeframes.”

“More recently, with our joint venture KARMOL, we’ve been building Floating Regasification and Storage Units that are specifically designed to work with our Powerships.”

KARMOL is a partnership with Japanese shipping giant Mitsui OSK Lines. Recent projects undertaken by KARMOL include a series of vessel conver sions – turning LNG carriers into FSRUs. By generating 30% less carbon-dioxide than fuel oil and 45% less than coal, LNG is regarded as the ‘cleanest’ fossil fuel. With natural gas use expected to account for 25% of the world energy portfolio by 2035, LNG is seen as an ideal energy alternative to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to ‘bridge the gap’ between more harmful fossil-based fuels and future sustainable technologies such as hydrogen.

Calling it a ‘sustainable, affordable way’ of meeting the power needs of developing countries while renewables continue to scale up to required levels, Katmer added, “LNG can service as a backbone of stable energy production while markets build their investment in renewables and it’s a reliable base on which to build a long-term hybrid solution cleaner power.” The company believes that the use of LNG will help make meaningful progress towards the goals set by the UN SDGs and the Paris Agreement – both hot topics at COP26 – as well as creating a viable commercial environment for longterm development.

GENERATOR SETS ARE POWERING TWO KEY BIOGAS PROJECTS IN CHINA

Beijing Yiqing Biomax Green Energy Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary of Beijing Environmental Sanitation Engineering Group Co. It was primarily responsible for the construction and operation of the Dongcun Classified Waste Integrated Treatment Plant Project in Beijing, and is also a large-scale environmental protection enterprise which uses an anaerobic digestion process to treat domestic waste.

The company handles the treatment of kitchen and food waste in Dongcheng District, Xicheng District, Vice Center and the Yizhuang Development Zone of Beijing.

The Dongcun biogas power plant is designed to generate power from the biogas produced from anaerobic fermentation of municipal domestic waste (food waste) and kitchen waste.

The plant is equipped with a biogas collection system, biogas storage tanks, biological desulphurization system, biogas de-watering facility and a filtration and pressurization treatment system.

Four MWM TCG 2020 V16 biogas generator units (single units with a capacity of 1,560kW) were selected with a total installed capacity of 6,240kW.

The whole system is equipped with a biological desulphurization and denitrification system, a waste heat boiler and a biogas generation cogeneration unit.

The power produced by the system is then sent to the municipal grid.

The MWM gas generator sets are highly efficient at treating complex anaerobic biogases. Power supply method: the plant runs off the power it generates and supplies the surplus power to the grid, maximizing the use of resources.

Dongcun Biogas Power Plant is the first anaerobic digestion biogas power plant for kitchen and food waste in Beijing, and the first distributed energy project in Tongzhou District.

The power plant adopts a model whereby biogas is produced from waste, generating electricity, supplying electricity, using electricity for internal equipment, and sending surplus electricity to the grid.

This is a highly environmentally friendly strategy, and an energy saving project that can effectively treat waste and achieve resource recycling. It is of great importance

both in terms of environmental benefits and resource utilization. The construction and operation of this project has filled the gap of anaerobic digestion biogas power generation for kitchen and food waste in Beijing, effectively optimizing the energy consumption structure of Tongzhou District.

This has contributed to energy saving and emission reduction efforts, is alleviating the energy “bottleneck” constraints of economic and social development, is relieving environmental and ecological pres sure, and is transforming the region’s economic growth model.

This is consistent with the high-end positioning of Beijing’s sub-centre, and can be used to achieve a coordinated and sustainable development for the city.

Around 1,400 kilometers to the North-East lies Mundanjiang City, place of the first landfill gas power generation project in Heilongjiang Province.

To treat the landfill gas after the stock had been overlaid, Pauway (a distributor of MWM) created a customized MWM TCG 2020 V12 containerized gas generator set with an output of 1.1MW for the second phase of the project according to the customer’s demand.

The gas-fired generator set passed the acceptance test of the State Grid in November 2020, and was subsequently officially connected to the grid on 31 December 2020. After the unit was put into operation, the daily power generation capac ity of Guojiagou landfill gas power plant reached up to 40,000kWh. Its daily consumption of landfill gas is 38,000m3, and its annual landfill gas consumption is 12,000,000m3, saving around 12,000 tons of standard coal per year.

THE CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF THIS PROJECT HAS FILLED THE GAP OF ANAEROBIC DIGESTION BIOGAS POWER GENERATION FOR KITCHEN AND FOOD WASTE IN BEIJING, OPTIMIZING THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION STRUCTURE OF TONGZHOU DISTRICT. THIS HAS CONTRIBUTED TO ENERGY SAVING AND EMISSION REDUCTION EFFORTS. IT HAS ALLEVIATED AN ENERGY ‘BOTTLENECK’ .”

Mudanjiang Guojiagou Landfill Gas Power Plant is located in an area, where the average temperature in winter reaches below minus 20°C , with a historical extreme of minus 42°C. The annual period in which heating is required can last as long as six months.

As the first landfill gas power generation project in Heilongjiang Province, the power plant was established in 2007, and its first phase was connected to the grid in 2009.

In its first phase, the plant consumed 840 cubic metres of landfill gas per hour, with an annual consumption of landfill gas reaching approximately 6 million cubic metres, saving about 7,000 tons of standard coal per year. In 2020 the site took part in the landfill stock treatment project in Mudanjiang City.

The MWM TCG 2020 gas gensets are custom-tailored to the challenges of a dynamic market setting. The model portfolio offers an output range of 1,000 to 2,000 kWel and is thus perfectly suited to the high demands of a broad application spectrum.

The generator sets stand for efficiency, reliability, flexibility and environmental compatibility together with low lifecycle costs and high profitability.

It provides high performance even under hot ambient conditions and in high altitude environments, reports the company.

A spokesman comments: “Mission-critical systems require fast-start capability and one-step load acceptance. That’s why we have designed our systems to offer more available power within only a few seconds.

“We offer industry-leading load factors up to 100% for data centres and up to 85% for standby applications.

“This exceeds the established industry norms such as ISO 8528-1 and allows even more operating hours for prime, emergency standby and data center applications.”

The spokesman concludes: “This way, we can deliver sophisticated power solutions with even more actual available power than other manufacturers with the same nominal power -regardless of the circumstances.”

Imagine. Your hotel room is swelteringly hot, there’s no power for charging your cell phone, and, worst of all, the beer is tepid. It’s not a scenario any of us would fancy, particularly not on vacation, when all you wish for is a carefree environment in which to to relax and recuperate.

In the majority of hotels in Mexico, however, air-conditioning, TV and a bedside lamp are creature comforts which tourists and other hotel guests cannot take for granted round-theclock. In Mexico, fluctuations in the electrical supply are frequent, and complete power outages lasting several hours the norm.

As you’d expect from one of the most prestigious hotels in this region of Mexico, the new Barceló Maya Riviera is offering superior construction, large spaces, and a combination of sophisticated mono-chromatic textures.

Located opposite one of the most spectacular beaches in the Mexican Caribbean, it offers the opportunity for customers to enjoy the splendour of a beautiful destination.

The site provides white sandy beaches, a turquoise sea, and beauti ful views of idyllic surroundings.

The hotel offers a total of 850 rooms, each featuring a terrace and hot tub. Over 500 of them have sea views, and 110 have a private pool. They

all offer unparalleled views of the sea or the lush hotel gardens. Now, thanks to the installation of the mtu Series 4000 of generator sets, the loss of local electricty supplies is not soemthing any guest needs to worry about.

TEN 1,250 KVA GENSETS INSTALLED AT A MAJOR POWERPLANT IN YEMEN

Ghaddar Machinery reports that ten 1,250 kVA diesel generators with Cummins engines and Leroy Somer alternators have been supplied to a major powerplant in Yemen as part of a 10MW project.

The featured project consists of 10 units of Ghaddar Generators 1250 KVA powered by Cummins G-Drive engines KTA50-G3 and Leroy Somer Alternators LSA50.2M6 with synchronizing system.

Specifics of the generators

The Cummins G-Drive engines KTA50-G3 has an outstanding reputation for high performance power even under the harshest conditions.

The latest KTA range is jacket water aftercooled design. Its inbuilt step timing control system ensures optimum engine timing at all combinations of load and ambient temperature, improving cold starting and reducing light load fuel consumption to greatly enhance engine efficiency.

major features include:

* Aftercooler: Large capacity aftercoolers are sup plied with three different configuration types, which are dependent on the rating used: Jacket Water Aftercooled (JWAC), One Pump Two Loop (1P2L), or Two Pump Two Loop (2P2L). This provides cooler, denser intake air for more complete combustion and reduced engine stress es for longer life and low exhaust emissions.

*Cooling System: The JWAC aftercoolers share cooling water with the high temperature jacket water cooling system. There are no separate aftercooler connections that the customer needs to make.

The 1P2L aftercoolers utilize coolant drawn from the jacket water system, but operate at a lower temperature than the jacket water, due to a separate, lower temperature thermostat.

Two water pumps employ separate impellers on a common shaft to deliver coolant to the two different systems. Similar to the 2P2L system, two different

radiators are used to cool the engine jacket water and the aftercooler water.

The 2P2L utilises two completely separate water pumps. The engine jacket pump is engine-mounted and is driven from the rear of the gear housing.

The aftercooler water pump is customer selectable and can be provided mounted on the front of the gear cover.

Cummins provides conventional water inlet and outlet connections for the jacket system. Aftercooler water pump inlet and aftercooler core outlet connections are provided for customer use and ease of plumbing on the aftercooler system.

*Lubrication: A large capacity integral gear driven pump provides pressure lubrication to all bearings and provides supply for piston cooling. Cummins-supplied large capacity oil pans are recommended for Prime and Continuous Power applications.

*Pistons: These are dual Ni-resist, aluminum alloy, ground and shaped to compensate for thermal expansion which assures a precise fit at all normal operating temperatures. Oil cooled for rapid heat dissipation. Two compression rings and one oil ring. The system uses an offset piston

pin for reduced susceptibility to liner cavitation.

The alternators

The Nidec Leroy-Somer LSA 50.2 alternator has been designed to offer customers the best power generation performances, says the company.

With its meticulous design and optimised architecture, the LSA 50.2 strikes the perfect balance between compactness, reliability, performance and longevity, says Nidec. The Nidec Leroy-Somer LSA 50.2 alternator meets all key inter national standards and regulations, including IEC 60034, NEMA MG 1.3233, ISO 8528-3, CSA C22.2 n°100-14 and UL 1446 (UL 1004 on request).

It is also compliant with IEC 610006-2, IEC 61000-6-3, IEC 61000-6-4, VDE 0875G, VDE 0875N and EN 55011, group 1 class A for European zone.

The Nidec Leroy-Somer LSA 50.2 alternator can be integrated in EC marked generator sets, and bears EC, EAC and CMIM markings.

It is designed, manufactured and marketed in an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality assurance environment.

NEW VARIABLE-SPEED GENERATOR SETS MEAN SMALLER BATTERY BANKS FOR VESSELS

To Volvo Penta’s variable-speed marine generator set range will initially include models extending from the 190 kWe D8 to the 545 kWe D16, reports the company.

Volvo Penta recently launched a new range of variable-speed marine generator sets - these are said to allow shipyards to more easily and cost-effectively install hybrid-electric modular propulsion systems in marine vessels by enabling the vessels to be built with smaller battery banks and charged while on the move.

Because of their modular installation, the gensets are also reported to be the most compact solutions avail able that meet the latest IMO Tier III regulations. The new range will initially include models extending from the 190 kWe D8 to the 545 kWe D16.

Their Volvo Penta water-cooled diesel engines can run on HVO 100 fuel, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to standard diesel, says Volvo Penta.

A typical installation of the technology includes us ing the variable-speed marine gensets to power electric drives with or without battery packs.

This direct current (DC) grid system can be upgraded with alternative power sources plus has fewer components, resulting in reduced vessel weight, particularly when compared to batteries as the sole energy carrier, said Volvo Penta.

The modular installation also creates the option to use the minimum number of engines to deliver required power, enabling the gen-sets to run in the efficiency sweet spot.

The new genset technology is already in use by customers, Volvo Penta explains, including by Swedish Transport Administration in the 100 m-long Tellus ferry operating in Sweden, and MHO-Co as part of the propulsion system for two 34.4 m-long hybrid crew transfer vessels.

Johan Inden, head of the Volvo Penta marine business, comments: “By making our Volvo Penta variable-speed marine generator sets more widely available, it takes us further forward in our journey towards more electric- and fuel-cell propulsion for the marine industry.

“Now, more vessels will be able to install modular hybrid propulsion systems ready to be adapted to future energy choices, meanwhile delivering important sustainability and fuel efficiency gains from day one.”

There are clear market advantages in the fact that Volvo Penta water-cooled diesel engines can run on HVO 100 fuel. HVO fuel is essentially a paraffinic diesel fuel which is already breaking the ground in helping

businesses reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%.

Today, road transport and NonRoad Mobile Machinery (NRMM) industries are facing a number of challenges due to climate change, localised emission control and immature or outdated technologies. HVO fuel solves these issues.

It is being used by many industries in machinery on vessels, in off-road and on-road vehicles and in other industrial machinery. It’s virtually the same fuel as mineral diesel but has a large number of logistical and environmental benefits.

Today, Volvo Penta gensets are powering the largest electric-hybrid ferry in Sweden. The Tellus ferry operates the 1.8km-wide Gullmarsleden waterway between Uddevalla and Lysekil – one of Sweden’s busy maritime routes.

The ferry has two electric-driven POD propulsion units, one at either end of the vessel – so that it doesn’t have to turn to go back and forth across the fjord. Energy to the propulsion units is taken either from the batteries or from four Volvo Penta D16 MH engines. These engines drive synchronous

reluctance assisted permanent magnet (SRPM) technology gener ators. These units can be driven individually or all four in parallel to optimise fuel consumption and emissions.

These marine gensets have been supplied by the Baltic state Volvo Penta Center BMG Power Systems.

While there are four Volvo Penta D16 engines onboard for the majority of the time the ferry usually only needs one engine to power its trips. The other engines are precau tionary, needed only during tough weather and sea-ice conditions.

In addition to the D16 MH variable speed engines found in Tellus, Volvo Penta also produces MG engines.

Volvo Penta’s IMO II-compliant constant speed engines now produce 479 kWm at 1,500 rpm and 532 kWm at 1,800 rpm, corresponding to a 50 Hz genset providing 450 kWe and a 500 kWe delivery at 60 Hz.

The MG engine has the toughest marine genset rating, ensuring high output around the clock, with a reduction of fuel consumption of up to 3% – compared to the older version of the engine.

Recent media reports have suggested Prime Minister Liz Truss is considering pausing or even abandoning the Energy Security Bill, in favour of focusing on reducing the cost of energy for households.

The ADE believes this would be a grave mistake, noting that one of the key oppor tunities presented by the Bill is to reduce energy demand and price volatility in the long-term.

ADE CEO Lily Frencham said:“Framing this as a focus on bringing down bills vs. market reform is flawed – the two are not mutually exclusive, and in truth, market reform is key to bringing down bills per manently.

“The Energy Security Bill provides a chance to scale up energy efficiency deployment, accelerate the rollout of heat networks and make the market truly flexible – these changes will slash bills in not only the short-term, but over the next thirty years. If we are to tackle the current crisis and prevent it from ever happening again, it is essential that the Energy Bill continues to move through Parliament at pace.”

Heat network fund arrives at critical time

Prime Minister Liz Truss has announced a raft of new measures and interventions aimed at tackling the energy price crisis.

Lily Frencham, CEO at the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE), said: “Since the very beginning of the ener gy price crisis, we have been speaking directly with the Energy Minister and senior civil servants to deliver protections for heat network customers to ensure they do not fall through the gaps. As a result, we are hugely relieved to see the new Prime Minister commit to a fund that will provide equivalent support for these households and businesses.”

Stephen Marcos Jones, CEO of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), which represents the businesses large and small delivering the built environment and national infrastructure sector, welcomes plans by government to cap energy prices:

“Our members will be pleased with the short term certainty provided by the six month energy price cap announced by the Prime Minister today. For all businesses it will provide some immediate relief during this difficult period. We await more details on how this will work in practice.

“However, energy costs are only one contributor to current inflation. In a soon-to-be published survey of our members, results show increasing concerns about the broader economy. The pound falling to levels not seen since 1985 this week is just the latest example of the multi-faceted inflationary pressures facing our economy.

“To help our businesses navigate the choppy waters ahead of us, we need reassurance and clarity over the longer term outlook. For our sector this means confirmation of a strong construction and infrastruc ture pipeline.”
