This is the 150th time I have written an introduction to The West Wilts Magazine - we started back in September 2009 and some 13 years later we are still - we hope - keeping the great and the good of West Wiltshire (and beyond) apprised of the very best of living in our patch. And I’m pleased to say there is plenty to look forward to in this edition, as always!

As the kids go back to school (do I hear celebratory champagne corks popping?!) it heralds in open day seasonthe time of year when parents go to take a look at prospective schools with their little ones. Our education guide (from p43), complete with tips from ISC Chief Executive Julie Robinson, should help you navigate your way through...

After a little break last month, venues are full to bursting with events and exhibitions this autumn and we hear from a few on our news pages (from p14). There are also the final track meetings of the year to look forward to at Castle Combe Circuit (p20). With messy eats from The Food Wife (p33), updates and improvements at Wiltshire Inns (p26) and a walk at Morningside Meadows to read about (p38) there is stacks to look forward to - as per usual - in our 150th edition. Enjoy!

See Downton Abbey: A New Era at the Pound Arts this autumn Herakles and the Lion’s Mask Etching

This September is your last chance to catch the Love Life: David Hockney Drawings 1963 to 1977 exhibition at the Holburne Museum. The exhibition runs until 18 September and with over 40 of David Hockney’s extraordinary drawings on loan from private collections, it is a wonderful way to enjoy Hockney’s artistry and astonishing power of observation and skill in using tiny, mundane details to help capture a situation, a sitter’s character, or a place. Hockney fans will not want to miss Chris Stephens’ accompanying lecture on 15 September at 7pm, tickets are £15.

The second exhibition is Elisabeth Frink: Strength & Sensuality, from 22 September 2022 to 8 January 2023. In 2019 the Holburne received a bequest of 35 objects from the estate of sculptor Dame Elisabeth Frink (1930–1993). The artworks included sculptures, drawings, etchings, and screen prints. This new exhibition celebrates this important acquisition by showcasing a selection of 11 of the works depicting her unique take on some of the most loved and well-known tales from Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales and classical Greek •mythology.holburne.org

The new season sees two new exhibitions arrive. The first is RodinDegas: Impressionist Sculpture, from 24 September 2022 to 8 January 2023. Bringing together two towering figures of modern European art: Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) and Edgar Degas (1834–1917), this new display focusses on the artists’ equally radical representations of the human body and demonstrates how both artists used sculpture to explore limits and extremes.

xodus: The Uganda Asians’ Crisis of 1972 is a new exhibition running at Arundells, the former home of Sir Edward Heath, from 12 August until 1 November. The exhibition examines the forced expulsion of the Asian community from Uganda by President Idi Amin Dada in 1972 and the willingness of the Government of Edward Heath to receive over 28,000 refugees. It tells the remarkable story of the expulsion of the Asian community from Uganda, the initial resistance from some political elements to their admission to Britain (even though they were British passport holders) and how from arriving virtually penniless, the community have made new and successful lives in Britain over the last 50 years. Tickets for the exhibition are included with any house or garden entry ticket, visit the website for details. To complement the exhibition, Arundells is hosting a panel discussion on 1 September. The event will bring together key players to examine the mass expulsion of Uganda’s Asian community, their experiences in Britain, the political battle for acceptance and the lessons learned for policy today. Tickets are just £15 and can be purchased on the website • arundells.org

The Corsham Gallery supports local artists

In 2021 a group of artists took over an empty shop space in the heart of Corsham for the Peacock Arts Trail. The success of that ‘Pop-up’ led Ali Haynes to follow her dream of having her own gallery. Working with a small group of hand-picked artists, all with the same vision, The Corsham Gallery became a reality, opening in January 2022. The ethos of the gallery is to provide the resident artists an outlet for their art and to provide the opportunity for people who are interested in art to support local talent and to meet the creatives behind it.

'there ain’t no treat like a breaded meat' and as Max says, "Why should the people of Middlesbrough be the only ones to have pizzas made of meat?".These amazing creations are essentially large pork (or aubergine) schnitzels slathered in tomato sauce, béchamel and then covered in cheese and fantastic pizza toppings. Max says "especially after a beverage or two, there is literally nothing on planet earth I’d rather eat, bearing in mind I’ve already had a sandwich". As their pub, The Sam Weller’s, lets people bring in their own food, The Parmo Shop’s breaded meat treats will of course be able to be ordered, delivered to and consumed on the premises, with similar plans for their Salisbury pub, The Five Bells. Sitting on Upper Borough Walls in the centre of town, the pub has been given a makeover with the addition of contemporary artwork, dark blue colour palette, cast iron tables and classic pub stools. THE BEST PUBS IN THE WORLD With a mutual love of the great British boozer and wishing to move away from the typical gastropub model, sandwich King and TV chef, Max Halley, and publican, Ethan Davids joined forces in November 2021 to start opening pubs together. Max and Ethan met at Ethan’s pub The Grosvenor Arms in Hindon, and the idea to open simple and wonderful boozers serving pints, bags of crisps (Scampi Fries particularly) and pickled eggs was born. Their first opening was The Five Bells in Salisbury, where Ethan grew up. Described by the duo and locals alike as ‘The Best Pub in the World’, The Five Bells has stripped wooden floors, Persian rugs and button velvet banquettes. They serve pints of lager, local ales in a glass with a handle and the only food you’ll find on the menu will be scampi fries, scotch eggs, an occasional hot sausage and, of course, pickled eggs.

Keeping you in the know as to what is coming into season each month is

A s I sit and write this article the temperature is 35°C! Rain is forecast for the next few days though and I am hoping we get enough to benefit all of the outdoor crops and gardens. Our potato grower Derek says the Maris Piper tops (haulms) are still quite green luckily so hopefully it won’t be too late to bulk this important crop up - our restaurants really rely on them. It is remarkable just how our growers continue to supply great produce under extreme weather conditions, the overheads to look after these wonderful fruit and vegetables rise steeply when they have to apply water over a large area. It isn’t free and the labour charge is also massive to move the irrigation around between fields. Up to now all of the fruit and vegetables have been of average price and quality. A few crops are showing stress with strawberries which are ripening too quickly and leafy vegetables being scorched in the hot soil. I am sure the knock on effect of the dry summer will lead to winter root crops having yields reduced causing higher prices and more imports. It has been a good summer for all salad crops, especially tomatoes. Cucumbers have been short in supply at times but all other salads have been at normal levels. This month heralds the start of a new season as the nights start drawing in steeply and temperaturesthedrop, however there is still lots to enjoy and keep you busy in your allotment or garden. Sow over- wintering onions, spinach, winter lettuce and plant onion sets and garlic cloves. You may be lucky enough to have some autumn raspberries to harvest.

NEIL MORTIMER from Lovejoys Wholesale...

September is a nice month for foraging. There is a calm and quietness as the children are back to school and the countryside is a little quieter as people are back into their term time routines. five minutes before the wings are finished cooking, mix together the honey, soy, chilli sauce, sesame oil and water and add the mix into a wok over a high heat and start to reduce it down until it starts to thicken. When they are finished cooking add the wings and toss, still on the high heat, so they get coated in the sauce which will then continue to reduce down to a sticky glaze. Serve immediately, scattered, if you like, with sesame seeds and crispy onions. Be sure to have something on hand to wipe your fingers on when you’re finished! EATS

I used a 250g packet of ready cooked quinoa but you could cook 100g of dry quinoa to give the same quantity.

Another messy and absolutely delicious meal! If you’re not a fan of peeling prawns you can use ready peeled raw prawns (about 250g) but they won’t have as much flavour. Serve with crusty bread to mop up all the oil and juices or with some fries.

To help ease the process, here are some top tips for parents considering an independent school for their child:

If you live in an area with a number of good schools, create a shortlist based on the key characteristics you are looking for in your child’s school.

ATTEND OPEN DAYS Open days give families the opportunity to see first-hand whether a particular school is the right fit. Some schools continue to run virtual open days in the aftermath of the pandemic, making it possible for families to explore what a school has to offer from the comfort of their own home – this is particularly helpful for those considering a school which is further afield. During your visits, ask teachers everything you want to know; it is always best to speak up if you have any queries or concerns! Important areas you might ask about include class sizes, the subjects on offer, methods of assessment, extracurricular activities and pastoral support. If you are considering a boarding school for your child, find out more about the on-site accommodation, flexi-boarding options and what activities take place over the weekends. Chat to pupils as well as staff and ask them about their experiences at the school. Much can be learned from their behaviour – do they seem happy, confident and at ease in their environment, are they engaged with their lessons and wider activities?

For parents with a limited choice of local schools, the ‘Find a School’ tool on the website is especially useful, as it enables you to refine your search by distance, day and boarding, age range, fee assistance options and more!

"Open days give families opportunitythe to see first-hand whether a particular school is the right fit."

By JULIE ROBINSON, Chief Executive of the Independent Schools Council...

All independent schools are different, and it’s important to choose an environment best suited to your child’s needs. The independent sector encompasses day and boarding schools, singlesex and co-educational schools, and schools with specialisms such as in the arts or sport. Ask yourself what type of school would best enable your child to develop their skills and provide them with the kind of learning opportunities through which they would thrive!

Julie Robinson

THINK ABOUT THE SCHOOL’S SPECIALISM OR FOCUS

If a particular school stands out to you, book a follow-up appointment. This will give you the opportunity to speak more personally with the headteacher or registrar and enable you to ask any further questions or raise concerns you might have. The independent sector is diverse, with a huge range of schools and approaches to education on offer. Give yourself plenty of time to conduct your research, and use your experiences on open days to guide you as you choose the right school for your child. • isc.co.uk

HOW TO PICK AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL

NARROW DOWN YOUR CHOICES

MAKE A APPOINTMENTFOLLOW-UP

The Independent Schools Council brings together seven associations and four affiliate associations to represent almost 1,400 independent schools. These schools educate more than half-amillion children. Around half of UK independent schools are ISC schools, educating around 80 per cent of all independent schoolchildren. Despite the disruption caused by the COVID19 pandemic, pupil numbers stand at their highest level since ISC records began in 1974 – so it’s clear that an independent education remains a popular choice for families.

Here are some of the top jobs to be getting on with in the garden this month...

6. Continue to water pots/ containers and new plants from water butts if possible. This year's lack of rainfall has highlighted how important it is that we conserve every drop for use in dry seasons.

10. Plant spring flowering crops

Raspberries are tasty and easy to grow. If you grow both summer and autumn-fruiting varieties a few plants will reward you with plenty of fruit from mid-summer until mid-autumn. If you end up with a glut, raspberries also freeze well, and make wonderful jams, sauces and cooked desserts.

Start harvesting main crop potatoes this month Divide perennials to get more plants for free!

GARDEN JOBS

3. Harvest seeds Growing plants from seed is an opportunity to increase the number of plants in your garden for free. Take a paper bag and capture the seeds of hardy annuals and perennials.

One of the gardening's best and easiest jobs is planting bulbs ready for spring. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding garden plants to grow and give the promise of colour to come next year. Why not attempt a bulb lasagne? You layer up springflowering bulbs to create a display that will lasts for months.

5. Net ponds Before leaf fall gets underway net your pond and remove fallen leaves and debris to avoid decomposing vegetation building up in the pond.

7. Start to reduce frequency of houseplant watering This is to prepare the plant for a period of dormancy over winter

1. Divide Perennials Dividing perennials regularly will ensure healthy, vigorous plants that will continue to perform year after year. It also offers the opportunity to multiply your plants.

4. Harvest main crop potatoes Provided the crop is healthy, leave main crop plants until early autumn to bulk up (the tubers are prone to slug damage). For storing, lift the potatoes when the tops die back and the skin resists gentle pressure. All potatoes should be gathered by mid-October to avoid weather damage.

2. Pick autumn raspberries

9. Cover leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof netting As leafy veggies become larger, and when other food sources are dwindling, birds and particularly pigeons can quickly decimate your crop.

8. Clean out greenhouses and coldframes It may not be the most glamorous of tasks but cleaning out greenhouses/coldframes greatly improves the environment for plants. By removing algae, moss and grime it lets in more light and helps control pests and diseases.

GRAHAM SMITH from GreenThumb gives you some advice on how to help your lawn survive this summer's long, hot, dry spell...

• Avoid mowing in the heat of the day to prevent heat stress on your grass and yourself.

54gardensTHEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

•greenthumb.co.ukgreenthumb.co.uk

• Ensure you clean and remove grass from the underside of the mower after you have finished.

GREENTHUMB’S TOP LAWN TIPS FOR HOT WEATHER…

LAWN CARE IN HOT, DRY WEATHER

• Check your mower's blade regularly and sharpen or replace if necessary. If you don’t, it may tear the grass blades and increase the chance of disease.

"While dry weather can’t be takenmeasuresprevented, canbetopreventthe damage it can inflict upon your lawn."

We have had exceptionallyandry year so far, as any keen gardener will already know. The prolonged period of dry weather combined with intense heat has seen our lawns suffer. When deprived of water, lawn grasses can stop growing and will then go brown, especially once the top 10cm (4in) of soil dries out.

Well maintained lawns will recover quickly

• Change the mowing pattern each time you mow. Grass develops a grain based on your cutting direction, tending to lean towards the direction you mow. Alternating the pattern allows the opportunity for all grass species to grow.

Our lawns have been left looking brown following months with almost no rain

• If there is some growth or it looks unsightly with tufts of growth here and there, only trim the tops of the leaf and try and keep the height to 50mm (2”). A higher grass height will help to protect the soil, and keep it cool, which will help when the rains do come.

While dry weather can’t be prevented, measures can be taken to prevent the damage it can inflict upon your lawn. A well-maintained lawn usually recovers rapidly with the onset of autumn rainfall (we hope), especially if appropriate autumn lawn care is given. With GreenThumb’s treatments, coupled with good lawn maintenance, your lawn can be better protected against dry weather. In particular our Oasis 'water conserver' treatments can help protect your lawn in the future. This specialised water conserver treatment is applied as a liquid spray all over your lawn that helps keep your grass hydrated, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less.

GreenThumb Bath and Chippenham is a family run business which has been keeping lawns looking great for over 14 years. Currently we are responsible keeping over 1000 lawns healthy and lush across Bath, North and West Wiltshire. For a free lawn inspection and quotation get in touch today on 01249 653765 or by email chippenham@

• If the grass is dry and has stopped growing, do not mow it.

L aminate, wood and vinyl flooring have become increasingly popular in recent years, leaving carpet a far less common floor covering than it was for previous generations. Many of us still prefer carpet in certain rooms of the home though, and with energy costs soaring people are looking at ways to help keep their homes warm. Carpets are most definitely part of the solution.

COSY CARPETS

Allsop's stocks carpets from top manufacturer Cormar Carpets, whose extensive wool range is particularly good at retaining heat. They say, "Wool carpets are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they are also intrinsically practical. The integral characteristics of the fibres; warmth, durability and insulation, are carried through from field to floor. Investing in a quality wool carpet for your home can save you money over time." As well as being warm, Cormar's wool carpets are stain and moth resistant, breathable, extremely hard-wearing, sustainable and biodegradable as well as recyclable - they're a great choice!

CARPET INSULATIONFOR

Carpet has excellent insulating properties and helps to keep heat inside your home. If you have exposed floorboards for instance, you will no doubt be accustomed to the feeling of draughts from your floor. While this might be OK – and even pleasant – in hot weather, once winter comes you will struggle to keep your home warm whilst running up high heating bills. A carpet can stop cold draughts coming up through your floorboards and will keep heat from your central heating or fire within the room.

Carpet remains a hugely popular choice in living rooms and bedrooms, where people want to feel warm and cosy, particularly in the winter months. If you have a cold home that you struggle to heat in winter, carpet (along with good quality underlay) could help you to insulate your property and will even help you to reduce your energy bills.

Speak to siblings in advance so they are aware of what's happening and can offer a helping hand without it coming across as a confrontational conversation. A calm, considered and consistent approach is much more likely to produce a positive outcome. Your parents can appoint all of their children as attorneys if they wish.

Stress that putting plans in place is precautionary and having an up-to-date Will and LPA will ensure that their wishes are followed and carried out by the people they would choose. GOUGHS ARE HERE Getting the paperwork right is vital, using a specialist solicitor to create and register an LPA safeguards against it being drawn up with errors that turn out later to be expensive, time consuming and extremely stressful to put right.

THEWESTWILTSMAGAZINE

BE UPBEAT & POSITIVE

Having a Will or LPA in place can save expense and stress later on

If something happened to your parents, relative or spouse tomorrow, would you know where to find their Will? Do they have an LPA in place? What are their wishes for end-of-life care?

CREATE CONVERSATIONA

There is no time like the present:

A good relationship and regular dialogue with your parents about their plans for later life can make it easier to introduce sensitive subjects into wider discussions. BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR INTENTIONS Emphasise to your parents that your interest isn’t in your inheritance; but simply in ensuring that their affairs are in order and you’re aware of their final wishes.

To speak to the Goughs team about a Will or LPA, or if you’re worried about someone who has lost the capacity to make decisions, call 01249 444499 or •privateclient@goughs.co.ukemailgoughs.co.uk

If you’re struggling to find an opening, having case study examples from newspapers and magazines can be a more compelling way to show why these documents are so important and the potential cost implications and legal proceedings that can occur when there is no Will or a disputed Will. SET AN EXAMPLE Talk to them about your situation –tell them the steps you’ve taken to put your financial affairs in order and ask them if they’ve done the same.

Goughs understands asking sensitive questions about someone’s personal affairs isn’t easy and it’s particularly difficult to broach the subject of financial planning and care with your own parents. No one likes to dwell on the fact that the time may come when parents may not be able to look after themselves, but it is a conversation that we must have and it avoids far more difficult questions and decisions later. So, how and when can you broach the subject with an elderly parent, relative, or even your spouse and ease their worries?

SCOTT ROBERTSON IS ONE OF THE MOST HIGH PROFILE COACHES IN THE WORLD. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO LEARN FROM HIM?

HOW GOOD DOES IT FEEL TO BE BACK? It’s great to be back, 12 years after I left, The Rec is as beautiful as ever and I love the place and I’m looking forward to getting back into Premiership Rugby. IT’S ALMOST 18 YEARS SINCE YOU MADE YOUR DEBUT IN 2004, DO YOU REMEMBER ANY OF IT? I think I came off the bench away at Northampton and got a big hit from my old mate Bruce Reihana which rocked me a bit. It’s always special to wear the jersey for the first time and I was lucky enough to wear it many times after that too.

THOSE FORMATIVE YEARS OF YOUR CAREER, DID THEY SHAPE THE KIND OF MAN YOU ARE TODAY? We played some really good rugby so it certainly helped my rugby brain. I learned a lot here, some of which I have transferred to my coaching. IT’S BEEN 12 YEARS & A LONG JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW. HOW DID YOUR COACHING CAREER BEGIN? I made the decision that coaching was for me in my last couple of playing years while I was at Saracens. I started doing some coaching courses and was coaching at my daughter’s high school. I then went back to New Zealand when I retired and got involved with The Crusaders academy, coached The Canterbury U19 and then in 2015 Scott Robertson asked me to coach the Canterbury Crusaders with him.

He’s a very interesting man, an intelligent rugby mind and he taught me a lot about how to build a culture and connect with people because at the end of the day that’s what we do…We coach rugby but it’s all about how to connect with the people we work with. Every coach I’ve worked with you take a little bit from them. UNIVERSITY LIFE Local slang has always been rife at university. At Oxford, your battles (Tudor-Stuart) were (and still are) your college bills; if you didn’t get to an exam you ploughed (1853) it; and academic nudity (b1909) was the appearance in public without a cap or gown. At Cambridge, in Victorian times, a brute (19C) was one who had not matriculated and a sophister (1574) was an undergraduate in his second or third year. In both places a whiffler (c1785) was one who examined candidates for degrees, while at Dublin a sizar (1588) was one who got a college allowance. At Aberdeen, from the 18th century on, you were a bajan in your first year, a semi in your second, a tertian in your third, and a magistrand (1721) if staying for a fourth year to sit an M.A. More recently, new slang has grown up to describe the various degrees one may get. The much-prized First has been known as a Geoff (Hurst), a Damien or a Pattie (Hirst), a raging (thirst) or a James (the First). A 2:1 is known as an Attila (the Hun) or a Made-In (Taiwan). A 2:2 is known as a Desmond (Tutu) and a 3rd as a Douglas (Hurd), a Thora (Hird), or even a Gentleman's Degree, though who would admit to having one of those these days? “Once back, usually feeling utterly ruined, it will take a good three hours before I am able to function anything like a normal human being.”

At the time of writing I have just returned from a 18.5 mile (30km) training run for the London Marathon which is now only a few short weeks away. I live in Trowbridge and whilst I was running back from Lacock (yes that’s Lacock) I came to the decision that this is almost certainly going to be my one and only marathon. Everyone knows that to be able to run 26.2 miles (42km) is an amazing feat and to be able to do it at one of the most iconic races in the world is going to be incredible. What you don’t realise when you sign up though is just how much it will take over your life. I have enjoyed running for around 15 years but have never gone further than a half marathon. And in those 15 years I’ve only done 11 actual half marathon races. That distance seems so much more refined now I have taken on the marathon. I used to train for a half marathon, taper for a week, run it and then not run again for 10 days to allow my poor old body to recover. These days I pop out a half marathon (or more) every Sunday and then also doing two other runs during the week as well as some cross training, cycling or walking, and a bit of S & C (strength and conditioning obvs!) if I can fit it in. It’s not only the actual time of the runs that you have to take into consideration either. I am what you might call an’ average’ runner so an 18.5 mile training run will take me around 3.5 hours. It’s been pretty hot so to miss the heat I go out early, usually around 6am. That means I have to be up at 4.30am to be able to have the correct fuel (porridge) and hydration (coffee). Once back, usually feeling utterly ruined, it will take a good three hours before I am able to function anything like a normal human being. So that 3.5 hour run has essentially written off the entire Sunday morning and, to be perfectly honest, once the ‘running high’ has dissipated you don’t much feel like doing anything in the afternoon either. Physically it takes its toll too. There are parts of your body you have never really noticed before suddenly start to wake up and protest at the sheer unpleasantness of it all. Who knew you could bruise the soles of your feet?! Nobody told me that I would have to come down the stairs on my behind for a couple of hours afterwards and don’t get me started on Otherchafing!things you have to consider are what clothes you will be wearing, what shoes you will run in, how to carry water and energy gels with you while running if you need to and which gels, which is quite important as different ones can have some rather unpleasant gastric effects shall we say!! Then there are the logistics, where will you stay on the weekend, how will you get to London, where will friends and family be standing to watch your moment of glory(!) and how on earth are you going to get home again when you can’t move in your normal way?! I’m so excited I’m going to be able to run it in October (fingers crossed!) and contrary to how it might seem I really am enjoying the challenge but I think that will be it, something to tick off on the old bucket list. But then I might enjoy it so much I might want to have another go… crikey I never thought I’d be writing those words down!
