Welcome to the city of culture The Hague has a rich and rewarding cultural life we are more than proud to be a part of. Art and culture belong to everyone and are vitally important for our city. People want to live in a district which is not only safe, but which is also attractive, challenging and culturally engaging. As such, cities which invest in art and culture are much more attractive than cities which don’t. And, companies settle where people want to live. A multitude of theatres, museums, galleries and institutes give The Hague colour and make the city attractive to residents and international businesses alike. People enjoy a top show or concert, and are inspired, challenged and stimulated by art. Our museums are world class. Masterpieces by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Mondriaan find homes in the Mauritshuis and Gemeentemuseum, while the biggest painting in the Netherlands, the Panorama Mesdag, takes up residence in our city centre. The Escher museum and the Beelden aan Zee museum also pay testament to our artistic and cultural heritage and are well worth a visit. | The Summer Magazine 2015

Art and culture are not restricted to the museums, however. They express and portray the values of our democratic identity. Houses, streets and squares with historic appeal and impressive designs make people proud of their own district and city. Pop concerts, exhibitions, choirs and harmony societies encourage people to gather in theatres and museums, at rehearsal venues and festivals - to enjoy music (classical and pop), theatre and dance. In the summer months, everyone is welcome at one of the many festivals held in The Hague. Big festivals like Parkpop, attract more than 250,000 visitors every year. While, smaller festivals like Festival Classique, Movies That Matter, Todays Art, Crossing Border and De Betovering also do their part to add vibrance to the city. As Deputy Mayor of Culture in this city, you can imagine how proud I am of all the wonderful things that The Hague has to offer its residents and its many Dutch and international visitors. I wish you all a wonderfully cultural summer. Deputy Mayor Joris Wijsmuller 3

Volvo Ocean Race Festival 18 - 20 June

Francisco Vignale/MAPFRE

Scheveningen The world renowned Volvo Ocean Race is coming to The Hague! For a fun packed three days our city will play host to a number of international boating teams, as they make a 24 hour stop-over. International music acts, food and festivities will take over Scheveningen harbour and Zuiderstrandtheater as we proffer our classic Dutch hospitality and fondness for parties. Anouk, Golden Earring, Racoon and DI-RECT will all be performing during the festival, helping to revive the sailors’ spirits and boost their energy levels for the long race ahead! By this time the sailors will have been sailing for 8 months and have covered 65,000 miles. There is no definite arrival time for any of the boats, but after the time of their landing we will have exactly 24 hours to admire their boats before they begin the next leg of the race. Among the many delights in store for us are movies, water sports, children’s activities, a lecture from a former ocean race sailor, live music… and of course the arrival and departure of the vessels! For sailing fans this is an unmissable event - and for anyone else, its a great opportunity to soak up some more beach sun and revel in the summer festivities.

International Fireworks Festival 14 - 15 and 21 - 22 August Scheveningen Tens of thousands of spectators are drawn to the beaches of The Hague every year to witness the world’s top firework experts display their art in their countries name! On two consecutive weekends the skies above Scheveningen become the canvas on which several countries battle it out for the title of the best international fireworks display.

Rogier Vermeulen: www.roview.nl

Last year more than 60,000 observers were treated to a spectacular show, in which the Polish team triumphed with both children and the official jury voting their fireworks to be the most beautiful. Teams may only use up to 2000 fireworks and each display lasts between 11-13 minutes. Fireworks are not the only things on display over the course of these evenings, however. Scheveniningen will once again take up a carnivalesque theme as jugglers, fire-eaters, dancers and music groups use their own sets of skills to light-up the night. Due to the popularity of these evenings we recommend that you use public transport or ‘Go-Dutch’ and take your bikes to the beach, as parking will be hard to find!

Tong Tong Fair 27 May until 7 June Malieveld, The Hague The biggest Eurasian fair in the world where East and West meet to delight in one another’s culinary and cultural expertise. The Tong Tong Fair has existed in some a form since 1959 and in collaboration with the Tong Tong Festival - provides the perfect fusion of culture, food, and theatre. Hundreds of performances are spread over 12 days, stands offer Eastern merchandise and food , while dozens of restaurants and ‘warungs’ tempt the senses at the famous Food Court. Exhibitors come all the way from Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. While workshops, lecturers, musicians, dancers and other artists travel from across Asia to share their trades. So, if you don’t have the luxury of booking a week-off to visit Southeast Asia in-person, the Tong Tong Fair/ Festival offers the perfect introduction to the East - without the jet-lag. A day-pass to the fair will give you entrance to the tents and stands in Maliveld and includes a theatre pass for the Tong Tong Festival.

STET Open Air Theatre 3 - 6 September Raadhuis de Paauw, Wassenaar Shakespearian magic once again takes to the (open-air) stage in, British theatre company, Illyria’s adaptation of the Taming of the Shrew! This is the hilarious tale of sisters, lovers, schemes and The Bard’s impeccable wit. “Everyone wants to marry mild-mannered Bianca. No-one wants to marry her acid-tongued older sister Kate. Their father won’t let anyone marry Bianca until a husband can be found for Kate - but no-one knows anyone mad enough to take her on. Until Petruchio comes to town. What happens when a woman who suffers no fools meets a loud-mouthed braggart when neither is ever lost for words?” On the 3rd and 4th September, the Raadhuis de Paauw in Wassenaar will provide the perfect summer backdrop for this giggle-inducing comedy. While, on the 5th and 6th, Illyria will entertain earlier audiences with a matinee performance of The (not-so-Shakespearian-but-still-good!) Sorcerers Apprentice. Breathing poetry and silliness into our summer nights, STET’s open air festival is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon (or evening) with the whole family. Loving care from then

with all the prospects of now

Bronovo Hospital, which recently merged with Medical Center The Haque, offers general hospital services for the residents of The Hague and surrounding areas, especially for expats. At our hospital, employees and specialists work closely together in a multidisciplinary team to provide what we like to think of as health care with added hospitality. Nursing as a ‘labour of love’, as it was performed by devoted deaconesses in the past, has anchored certain fundamental values. Today, the mindset of our employees reflects these values, expressed through kind assistance and qualitative service. Great value is attached to gracious manners, because at our hospital personal attention is viewed just as important as medical attention. That’s why our motto is: ‘Courteous care’. Medical Center The Hague and Bronovo merged and form the foundation ‘Medical Center The Hague and Bronovo-Nebo’.

Information meetings If you are interested to attend an info meeting on the Dutch Healthcare System which will be organised in autumn, please send an email to Nanda, the expat coordinator. You will then be informed about the date and time when this info meeting will take place.

Patients Administration Financial issues, questions about your invoice or health insurance matters can be discussed with Deborah. Using her experience as a native English speaker, she can assist you straight away. Deborah can be reached on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 08.30 - 16.00 hours.

BILINGUALISM Good for you at any age Eowyn Crisfield You can hardly open your Facebook page these days without running into a link to an article expounding the benefits of bilingualism. “The Bilingual Advantage!”; “The Business Case for Bilingualism”; “Being Bilingual Boosts Brain Power!” - these are just a few of the headlines over the last years. So why the seemingly sudden interest in what is, after all, not a new or unique phenomenon? Recent research is consistently showing that bilingualism has many benefits that far surpass the simple ability to use another language.

What do we know about bilingualism?

Finally, it’s never “too late” to learn another language

Firstly, we know that bilingualism is beneficial and attainable for the vast majority of people. The standard wisdom is that “earlier is better” and for some aspects of language learning, this is true. We know that people who are successfully bilingual from birth usually have better accents than those who learn later. In addition to the idealised “native speaker accent”, early bilinguals often have a broader vocabulary, and better processing speeds in both their languages than later bilinguals. We know that many “early bilinguals” (roughly, before age 3) show signs of cognitive benefits to do with reasoning and rulediscovery. Both of these skills generally help students perform well in mathematics! More importantly, early bilinguals often show signs of being gifted communicators, and of being openminded and empathetic.

Adults can, and do, become successfully bilingual at all ages. While young children are better at some aspects of language learning, teens and adults are actually faster at learning new languages, because they can apply previous knowledge and learning strategies to the process. When you consider how long it takes a baby/toddler to learn to say a first full sentence versus how long it takes an adult language learner to say a full sentence, it becomes clear that “later” is not always a bad thing! There are a myriad of benefits to being an adult bilingual, regardless of how old you were when you learned your second language. Some of the areas in which bilingual adults show advantages are: working memory, focus, decision-making and multi-tasking.

The journey to bilingualism is not al ways easy or smooth While most children can seemingly acquire two or even more languages easily, some children do struggle with the additional burden. If you are raising a bilingual child, it is important to make sure you are doing everything you can to provide them with a strong bilingual environment, and positive language models across the board. If, despite this, your child seems to be struggling, it is important to find the right team to help. Ask professionals, who understand bilingualism, to work with your child to develop their ability. | The Summer Magazine 2015

In addition, adult bilinguals who use their languages regularly show a delay of 4-5 years in the onset of Alzheimer’s and other memory-related diseases, compared to monolingual peers! No, your accent may never be “native-speaker like”, but in light of all the benefits you can gain from learning a second language, that really doesn’t matter. So, Dutch for your kids, Dutch for you, and why not learn a little more French while you are at it? “Eowyn Is a Canadian-educated teacher, teacher-trainer and bilingualism advocate. You can find out more about her, and her work, at http://onraisingbilingualchildren.com/”

decoHOME By Lily-Anne Stroobach

Creating homes from home in The Hague Moving home is never easy, especially if it means uprooting yourself and your family and settling in a new country. A couple who understands this situation all too well and has made it their business to take the hardship out of decorating a new home, are Peter and Mehtab van der Wallen, the owners of decoHOME. ‘My wife, Mehtab, is an expat and I’m technically a repat,’ so we’ve both been in the situation of having to create a new home in various countries ourselves,’ Peter explains. Chatting to the couple in their busy store on the Fahrenheitstraat in The Hague, they emphasise that theirs is a ‘people business’ in which listening, understanding and interpreting people’s dreams is essential. Both have been in the decorating business for years and opened their store in The Hague three and a half years ago. Helping to create homes for internationals and expats is their core business. ‘One of the most important elements of settling into a new country is to have a safe and comfortable haven – something to call home. It helps people to feel established and gives them peace of mind,’ says Mehtab, who was born in Germany and worked in the textile industry in Turkey. Many of their customers in this niche market of internationals have busy working lives. decoHOME offers them a complete service. Everything is taken care of from start to finish. They specialise in window decoration, curtains, wallpaper, fabrics, paints and soft and hard flooring. They also have access to a team of service providers who can take care of electrical and plumbing jobs, plastering, painting and other tasks - even minor building alterations such as erecting a partition or installing a shower screen. Their customers vary from embassies to busy mothers. No task is too small or too ambitious for decoHOME, they assure me. And everyone gets the same service. ‘Trust is essential when you give someone the task of creating a new home for you. Most of our customers come to us through word of mouth referrals. They

8

have heard about our services through friends or colleagues and have seen the results of our work in other homes,’ says Peter. Asked about trends and taste in the decorating world, Mehtab livens up. ‘Thank goodness I have expats as customers too! They are so much more exotic and adventurous when it comes to colour and design. The Dutch are much more conservative and play it safe with off-whites, shades of grey and sandy neutrals,’ she explains. Peter van der Wallen is certainly not your typical Dutchman. He is a fervent cricket player and often meets prospective clients at his cricket club. ‘Just recently I was approached by three new arrivals when I came off the field. A strange place to find prospective customers, but it made my day!’ he laughs.

Fashion & Lifestyle By Ermine Fevrier

“Eventuall y, we will all tur into 70s’ zo n mbies ” You cannot go wrong with the perfect pair of jeans. This season is all about the flares. After ruling the spring runways of Saint Laurent, Gucci, Kenzo and Tom Ford, the style is finally available at high street prices; from Zara to H&M… meaning, eventually, we will all turn into 70’s zombies. So how to avoid looking like everyone else this summer? While I am all for flare jeans and a t-shirt, my pick is the denim kaftan, and not just any kaftan, but Aisha, named after a girl I met in Marrakech. It is a perfect piece for warmer days and a true statement maker, whether you are heading to the Grote Markt, BBQing in your garden or hanging out on the beach in Scheveningen. It is versatile and tailored to fit almost any figure. Elegant, funky, beach ready and easy to wear, it is certain to make you stand out.

After all, summer is all about colour and individuality. Channel your inner Joni Mitchell by pairing it with flare trousers, or go for an all-out look by wearing it with matching shorts and our showstopper raglan-backsleeves top. Rock it throughout the year, swapping sandals for boots. Oh, and don’t forget about the statement necklace! My choice would be a classic blue or yellow beaded necklace that you can team up with a variety of colours. Finally, jewellery lovers like me will definitely want to add a touch of something to their wrists. Our beaded multi-wrap bracelets are the perfect year-round accessory…and you can also wear them around your neck. We like versatility and the art of recycling, making sure that we do not just wear a piece once, but over and over again. Ermine Fevrier is a Style & Fashion Advisor @erminefevrier.com

ll Beach volleeybHaague! to conquer Th

BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS This year is set to be another top year for sport in The Netherlands, as thousands of spectators gear up to experience volleyball, at its finest, as the Beach Volleyball World Cup comes to The Hague. Beach volleyball has grown so much in popularity that it is even played ‘off the beach!’ The sport captured the worlds imagination during the 2012 Olympic Games. As millions were glued to their TVs, cellphones and laptop screens - images of London’s innovative beach stadium, filled with ecstatic fans, captivated audiences worldwide! This year, The Netherlands is doing its best to continue this trend by presenting multiple iconic championship venues. Amsterdam’s stadium will be located in non-other-than the historic Dam Square. Rotterdam will live up to its nautical theme by situating their games on an illustrious steamship. While Apeldoorn’s famous Market Square will be transformed into a beach. In spite of the spectacles, we are sure to witness at these three fantastic locations, the cherry on-top of this beachy-world-championship will undoubtably be in The Hague. Not only will this stadium be twice the size of the others, seating up to 5500 spectators, but it will be situated on a floating stadium on top of the Hofvijver!

Tournament director of the World Cup and Indoor Olympic Volleyball Champion, from Atlanta 1996, Bas van de Goor, praises the game and the imagination that is going into this years venues. “This sport has everything. Top sports from the top shelf, but also a high level of fun and entertainment. That is exactly what makes a World Cup championship. As a player and even more as a visitor you feel part of a summery, cheerful sporting event. I’m sure after a day of the World Cup you will be going home with a feeling of awe.”

Other exciting, non-Dutch, players to look out for are: Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross an American women’s duo (Walsh Jennings is a triple Olympic champion), and both the Brazilian and Chinese teams promise to raise the bar of the competition. A total of 208 matches will take place between June 26th and July 5th. With ninety-six teams, forty-eight male and forty-eight female teams, competing for the world title, excitement and an action packed couple of weeks are guaranteed! Festivities surrounding the games will be spread across all four cities over this period. For more on ticket sales, programs and side events please see www.wkbeachvolleybal2015.nl

It is here (beneath Prime Minister Rutte’s window) that we will witness the culmination of the World Cup, with both the semifinals and finals being held on July 4th and 5th. So, who should you look out for this summer? Beach volleyball is a sport where the Dutch are taking the lead. The current world champions are, Dutch born, Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen. The successful duo, Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst, recently won two titles on the FIVB World Tour, and Marleen van Iersel and Madelein Meppelink remain European Champions to watch.

See the world anew at the G Anton Corbijn

The GEMEENTE MUSEUM walks the line between classical and modern art - featuring both prized ‘traditional beauties of Holland’ and iconic mode photography.

(21 March - 21 June 2015)

“The i ntensi ty of creatio n is w hat fascin ates me in perfor ming artists .” Anton Corbij n

Beautiful Holland (4 April - 30 August 2015) The natural beauty of The Netherlands surrounds us on a daily basis and, even abroad, its quintessential windmills, grazing cattle, billowing white clouds and … cheeses are images we closely associate with the country. But, how did these scenes come to be so ingrained in the world’s imagination? Beautiful Holland pays tribute to those artists who were first inspired by, and captured, Holland’s unique day-today scenes and landscapes. Mesdag, Weissenbruch, Gabriël, Mauve and other Hague School painters’ fascination with these scenes, led to the creation of reflective works of immense beauty and skill. Such was the power and appeal of these renderings, that to this day their images determine the way we see and think of The Netherlands, globally. The exhibition celebrates this in a unique and dynamic fashion. Paying tribute to both the artists and the beauty that inspired them. Here, history, art and conservation

14

The Anton Corbijn and Beautiful Holland exhibitions pay homage to the power of the artist, and the belief that art can become the medium through which we see the world anew. What do Nelson Mandela, David Bowie, Kate Moss, Gerhard Richter and Robert de Niro have in common? They are all among the many legendary figures whom, renowned portrait photographer, Anton Corbijn, has immortalised in his dark room over the course of his career. Corbijn’s photographs are well known for their timing and his ability to capture a glint of emotion in an ordinary scene. Shedding a new light on, or revealing subtle truths about, his subjects. The moments he captures are so striking that many have acquired iconic status in their own right and have become the lens through which we remember the icons pictured. This year, The Hague recognises his life-long achievement with two exhibitions, showcasing the most comprehensive retrospective of his work, to date.

come alive, as the Gemeente Museum and the Nature Conservation Society encourage visitors to see the Dutch landscape, beyond the canvas. In combination with museum visits, trips to nature conservation areas have been organised. Walks, cycle tours and boat trips will provide great opportunities to immerse ourselves in the spring landscapes of The Netherlands, to look on with an artist’s eye and see if inspiration strikes! The excursions are in addition to the collection of over 100 iconic pictures, wildlife photographs and archive materials that have been amassed, depicting the evolution of the Dutch landscape, the passing of history and changing of techniques. Both indoors and outdoors, this exhibition challenges us to look at our country with new eyes. Comparing the Holland of Mesdag, Weissenbruch, Gabriël and Mauve, to that of our own. Quintessentially Dutch and internationally extolled the Gemeentemuseum and The Hague Museum of Photography’s spring exhibitions demonstrate, once again, that The Netherlands art and artists are masters that transcend time and medium.

The evolution of Corbijn from an avid, but shy, music fan to photographer and multimedia artist, of international acclaim, is a success story The Hague takes pride in telling. As an admirer of those who have inspired millions with their innovation and dedication, it seems only apt that, in the year of his sixtieth birthday, Corbijn’s own achievements are acknowledged in the country where he had his start. Since his first course in professional photography in The Hague (1974-1975) Corbijn’s multitude of creative projects have received international acclaim. These include, but are not limited to, the MTV Award for Nirvanas Heart-Shaped Box music video in 1994; more than 15 wins and multiple nominations at prestigious international film festivals for his 2007 film Control; the Camerimage Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Field of Music Videos in 2007 and the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund Prize in 2011.

It is without a doubt that this is an exhibition rich in modern culture and iconography, revealing much about the international society in which we live. So why not take a stroll through, and marvel at the seemingly endless capacity for creation some amongst us burn with.

Planning the next...

The International Community Fair

We at the TheHagueOnLine have been heartened by the response from our fellow internationals who have told us that they have missed the Feel At Home in The Hague International Community Fair. We, too, believe that The Hague region should have a special event where for one day the whole community comes together. The first Fair was held in 2006 in the Carlton Ambassador Hotel, before the age of social media, with the goal of helping Expats “feel at home” in their new environment, by showcasing the depth and diversity of sports & social clubs and culture in the region. It was an immediate success with around 70 standholders and 2,000 visitors. As a result, the following year we were invited by the Gemeente to hold the event in Atrium of the City Hall. The larger size of the exhibition space gave us the opportunity to increase the number of standholders to 200 and the visitors to 4,000. This bigger fair included other municipalities, local Expat and International small businesses, as well as various service providers. Additionally it allowed for a podium program, seminars and a Food Court. However, the core of the fair remained the Sports & Social clubs, which are a reflection of the unique community spirit which makes this region special. Since those early days, both the nature of the international community and the way we are connected by new technology has changed. The International community is now more inclusive and comprises not just Expats on 2-3 year assignments, but students and free movers on much shorter stays, as well as global citizens, putting down roots in the region alongside repats, lovepats and thousands of internationallyminded locals. The internet and social media have affected the way | The Summer Magazine 2015

we communicate with each other so that we are better informed and more inter-connected than ever, and we would like the Fair to reflect that change. We would like to create a Fair which is not just providing information, but celebrating everything our region has to offer, providing a full and entertaining day out for the whole international, and internationallyminded, community. And we would welcome you, as part of that community, to be involved in the planning of that day. Our first idea is to move the date of the Fair from September to the early in the New Year to avoid conflicting with the busy post holiday schedule and so allow as many people as possible to participate in the Fair, from schools and charities, to companies and international organisations. After a brief spell away, we also plan to return to the City Hall and so make the most of its central location and plentiful space, both inside and outside. But most importantly we plan to make the Fair more fun and interactive by encouraging you, the community, to participate in a full program of sporting and cultural competitions and activities at the Fair. We’ve already enlisted some partners and come up with some exciting activities and events, but we’d also love to hear your ideas about what you think makes you Feel at Home in The Hague and which activities and information you’d like to share with your international compatriots at the Fair.

Please send your ideas to fair@thehagueonline.com. We very much look forward to hearing from you! 17

Renée Veldman-Tentori

OF MY FAVOURITE BOOKS by Expats for Expats in The Netherlands

It seems the international community in The Netherlands harbours wonderful writing talent amongst us. Here’s a list of just a few books to get started. Each of these would be a perfect addition to your beach bag this summer!

The Mobile Life

Diane Lemieux and Anne Parker compare the move to a new country to that of an expedition of great explorers. This recently released book takes a totally new approach to assisting expats build a successful life in a new place. What made a huge impression on me was not just the recognition of the enormity of a move, but the useful practical tips and explorer anecdotes that help make this process more manageable. www.themobilelife.eu

How to be Orange

Greg Shapiro is known as the American “Netherlander” and recently celebrated twenty years of life in The Netherlands. In this time, he has gathered a wonderful array of experiences to share, to which he gives his own humorous twist. Promoted as “an alternative Dutch assimilation course”, what I like most about this book is that you are learning while you’re laughing. www.howtobeorange.nl

a Career in Your Suitcase

When relocating your life to a new country, this book is a must-have to make sure your career not only comes with you helps you create your unique Career Passport! The original edition was written by Jo Parfitt, a well known name for expat books in the Netherlands, with many great titles available through Summertime Publishing. This most recent (4th edition) brought career consultant, Colleen ReichrathSmith, on board as well, adding even more insights and information. www.careerinyoursuitcase.com

In The City of Bikes

Pete Jordan is an American who relocated to Amsterdam and pours his passion for bikes into this book. Were the Dutch always born to bicycles or were there factors that contributed to developing this national obsession? Part personal memoir and part historical insight, this is a fascinating read that will change the way you look at cycling in this country. www.cityofbikes.com

Dutched Up! Rocking the clogs expat style

I’m a little biased here as I’m a contributor, but mine is just one of 45 personal stories from 27 female bloggers based in The Netherlands. With tales of culture shock, eating and shopping, bikes, language, working, tax, making friends and much more, reading this book is like sitting down for a friendly cup of coffee with other expats. A perfect read for feeling that you’re not alone in the challenges and joys of life in this crazy country. Currently available as an e-book, with the print copy coming soon. www.dutchaustralian.com/book-dutched-up

Ready, Steady, Go Dutch

Produced through a collaboration between expat experts DutchNews.nl and ACCESS, it’s no surprise that this book is packed full of practical tips and tricks. Giving “The Lowdown on the Lowlands”, bite-sized pieces of information are grouped together under a range of topics including Working Life, Officialdom, Play and Health. A handy list of additional support and resources is also included. A treasure trove of tips from those who have done it all already. www.readysteadygodutch.com

Courteous the hague haags hofkwartier – Quartier de la Court – Court distriCt This is where The Hague began, grouped around the Royal Court: in the little winding streets behind the Palace, with craftsmen, artists, speciality shops, food stores and Inns, and in the wider streets, in the front, with the grand mansions of the bourgeoise. Nowadays, nothing much has changed! The craftsmen, artists, speciality shops, delicatessens, pubs and restaurants are still nestled in the same little winding, medieval streets. While the mansions, in front of the Palace, house art galleries and up-market stores with world famous brands.

Top Summer Sports Once again, this summer, The Netherlands will be hosting some major international sports events for your enjoyment. TENNIS Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as well as former world number-one players Leyton Hewitt and Jelena Jankovic will be competing at the ATP Topshelf Open grass court tennis championships. Just over an hours drive from The Hague, the tournament takes place in Rosmalen, from 8 - 14 June. This event is used by many players as a warm up for Wimbledon. MOTORSPORT Motorbike fans should not miss the 85th edition of the Dutch TT, the longest running event on the MotoGP calendar, which is being held at the TT Circuit Assen on Saturday 27 June. The track is in the north of The Netherlands and is about 2.5 hours drive from The Hague. The famed TT Assen circuit is affectionately known as “The Cathedral “ by motorcycling fans worldwide. Its narrow track, with rapid changes in direction, is fully surrounded by grassy banks and grandstands, providing excellent viewing points for the hundreds of thousands of fanatical spectators. This truly is the most prestigious event on the Dutch motor sport calendar. LE TOUR DE FRANCE The world’s most famous cycle race “Le Tour de France“ will start in Utrecht on 4th July. Le Tour de France will begin with a 14km time trail, through the streets of Utecht, and the next day riders will set out on a 166 km peloton from Utrecht to Zeeland. If you are planning to witness this firsthand, you

26

may be wise to leave your cars at home and take the train (about 40 mins), as huge crowds are expected. After Amsterdam (1954), Scheveningen (1973), Leiden (1978), Den Bosch (1996) and Rotterdam (2010) this will be the 6th time that the Netherlands has had the honour of “Le Grand Départ”. GOLF Golf fans can get their fix at the KLM Open which will be held from the 10 - 13 September at the Kennemer Golf & Country Club. The seaside links course is located in Zandvoort, just over an hours drive from The Hague. The tournament is part of the European tour and previous winners have included Seve Ballestros, Darren Clarke, Martin Kymer and Bernard Langer. The defending champion is the Englishman, Paul Casey, who matched the course record (62) during his third round. The excitement does not end there however, last year (English) Andy Sullivan won a trip into space worth US$100,000 by making a hole in one on the 15th hole. Last but not least two major international events will coming to The Hague in June and July. During the weekend 18-20 June, the Volvo Ocean Race will have a 24 hour pitstop in Scheveningen, while The Hague will act as one of the host cities for world beach volleyball championships between June 26-July 5th.
