P&P Homes & Interiors Make use of spare space within the home - especially if it affords you the room to add a toilet to your bathroom.
SPACE CHANGING IDEAS
W
hen faced with problematic interior spaces, sometimes you need to think outside the box room in order to come up with a solution. Everyone is familiar with how wall colours affect the sense of space in a room, but few actually consider physically changing the shape of the space itself. The way rooms used to be divided in older homes may have suited the times, but they may not be ideal for the way we live today. Homes built in the 40s or 50s, for example, often had the toilet separated from the bathroom. This was a practical way of dividing space at the time, but today homeowners would by far prefer to knock down the partition and create a larger and airier bathroom. Space constraints in new build properties mean that many homes have small and impractical spaces. Some people take drastic measures and start knocking down partitions. This may loose them a room, but the sense of space gained usually more than makes up for the loss of a small and pokey room. If knocking down walls isn’t an option, you can create the illusion of more space using a few tricks. If you have an out-of-proportion narrow room with a high ceiling, installing a false ceiling with recessed downlighters will help to balance the proportions of the room. By shortening the height of the room, it will instantly look wider. You could also consider altering your home’s space by changing the floor level. The ambience of a large dining room or living room can be made more intimate by raising the level of the floor. This also adds character to a room and is a perfect way to help define large open spaces into distinct areas. Just check that your ceiling is high enough. 4 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
If you aren’t brave enough to start altering ceilings and floors, or you own a period home that shouldn’t be tampered with too much, there are more ways than one to change the illusion of a room’s dimensions without altering the structure. Straightforward square spaces can be visually lengthened by placing a pair of screens or open shelving units that mirror each other across the room. Other contemporary room dividers include fabric panels and glass bricks. Don’t forget about the oldest trick in the book if you want to detract from narrow or small spaces: cleverly placed mirrors. Early 19th century architect Sir John Soane used mirrors to expand the space in his eccentric London home, which is now a museum, and to make his vast collection of art treasures look even more impressive. He also used mirrors to create the illusion of window portholes. Glass is also an increasingly popular material for interiors. Glass tables blend into the background and won’t overcrowd a spacechallenged room. Glass is even used for staircases that allow the natural light to flood into otherwise dark spaces to help maximise the illusion of space. If you have a garden next to your room, visually bringing it indoors will help to fool the eye into seeing a larger space than there actually is. Choose garden furniture that coordinates with your interior furniture and add indoor plants to your room to tie in both areas. You can increase this effect by using the same floor covering inside and outside if you choose weather-hardy sandstone, terracotta or slate tiles. Alternatively, stain outdoor decking to match wooden interior floors.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Saksons Interiors
W
hen Adam Rhodes and Tony Atkins worked in the interiors trade, they had a feeling that their combined knowledge and skills could lead to something unique. with a unique knowledge for design and fitting. Paying meticulous attention to detail and driven to creating exquisite interiors of the highest quality, the pair - who have 40 years’ experience between them - pooled their expertise to establish their own company. “We thought there was a gap in the market for someone like us, for an independent that cares,” says Adam. “We sat down over a coffee to discuss it, and it took off from there.” The result is Saksons Interiors, a company that offers bespoke, luxury kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Set up in 2014, the firm offers clients exacting standards of design and delivery, from conception to completion. In a short time, it has earned itself a reputation for creating exceptional interiors. At the company’s base in Hospital Fields Road, York, the stunning showroom offers an inspirational experience for visitors to view the firm’s full range of design options. This year sales director Adam and installation director Tony have moved their growing business forward as Amy became a qualified interior designer. “It is a very exciting job,” says Amy, whose imaginative eye, in particular with colour-coordination, has already drawn much praise from clients. The company prides itself on being a supplier of only the highest quality bathroom products from well-established manufacturers they know and trust. Adam added “We do supply only too as well as project managed, every customer is different and has different needs which is something we understand and will always accommodate”. “We are not stack it high, sell it cheap,” says Adam. The more Adam spoke it became very clear that the company’s ethos was very much to use British suppliers wherever possible and he was very proud of that. The business is an exclusive partner for Huddersfield-based interiors and furniture company Daval which prides itself on quality British craftsmanship. Its latest kitchen range is exquisite. “It really stands out,” says Adam. He went on to add “We are excited to announce 6 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
another partnership with Toffs from Barnsley, enabling us to offer a new range of sliding robes”. Innovation brings kitchens that provide practical solutions to ageold storage problems. “They are very practical, and cabinets have a lifetime guarantee,” says Adam. Fittings by renowned Austrian manufacturer Blum are built to withstand the rigorous usage to which kitchens are subjected. Top bathroom brands Roper Rhodes, Heritage and Ashton & Bentley renowned for its exclusive material Correro marble - attract customers for their elegance and individuality. It also displays the timeless bathroom craftsmanship of Swedish firm Miller. Innovation is bringing individual kitchens that provide practical solutions to age-old storage problems. “They are very practical, and cabinets have a lifetime guarantee,” says Adam. The company has Premier Partnership status with world-acclaimed German kitchen appliance firm AEG, offering customers a five-year guarantee for five years parts and labour. Cookery sessions with top chefs, selected by AEG, are occasionally held at Saksons’ open days, to showcase the cutting-edge of kitchen design. At Saksons customer service is a vital ingredient that is paramount in all the company does. “It is very important, we treat people how we would like to be treated ourselves,” says Tony. “This is our fifth year and we get lots of repeat business,” adds Adam, stressing that it is very much a family firm with family values. “My dad is a builder and sometimes works on site”. He went on to say, “We are a small team and offer all our customers a personal service”. Saksons’ corporate colours of burgundy, white and grey also adorn Tom, one of the handsome horses belonging to international showjumper Ria Ginley, sister of Amy Ginley who deals with the social media for the company. Both help to raise the profile of the company as it goes from strength to strength. Says Adam: “We have grown the business, taken on staff and worked hard with key suppliers. Our reputation has taken us to where we want to be, and we are well-prepared for the future.” *Saksons Interiors, 39 Hospital Fields Road, York YO10 4FT W: saksonsinteriors.co.uk T: 01904 621029; E: saksonsinteriors.co.uk

RESTORING ORIGINAL FEATURES IN YOUR HOME
M
any of us will choose a house based on those immortal words ‘original features’. Fireplaces, wooden floors, ceiling coving and old pine doors are all things that can raise a house above the pack when it comes to the estate agents details. But more often than not those much-loved features have seen better days - pitted boards, crumbling plaster and peeling baths - fine in theory but those promises to fix them up are often forgotten in among the important task of living day to day in a property. However, whether you’re fixing up to sell or just want to give your home the love it deserves it’s important to respect original features and restore them extremely carefully - a bodge job won’t see the house through another year, let alone 150. Many professionals advocate using like for like when restoring a Victorian or Edwardian home, making new additions blend in with old, while others suggest respecting the original by making alterations and additions obvious. The benefit to this is not only in adding your own mark to a place but also in realising that a copy is not as desirable as an original. If you desperately wish to keep an old home in the state it was intended to be your first stop should undoubtedly be the local reclamation yard or handy website www.salvo.co.uk where you can pick up anything from paving slabs to sash windows, plaster mouldings to butler sinks, church pews and even school toilets.
8 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
You might also wish to build up a network of local builders who will get in contact if they remove something you need from another house or even knock on the doors of homes which are obviously being renovated. While restoring wooden doors and floors may seem as simple as a sanding and waxing job, often panels or boards may need replacing or woodworm may need to be treated. For the perfect finish hire a professional who will know how to use the unwieldy floor sander and exactly what products to use on your wood. Additionally a carpenter can suggest ways in which warped or ill fitting doors can be improved. Original bathroom fittings can look wonderful but there’s no denying that tens of years of wear and tear can take their toll. With a little attention lavished on them ball and claw baths, butler sinks and even old loos can be given a gleaming new lease of life. Again, rejuvenating a cast iron bath might be best left to a professional although home re-enamaling kits are available. A toilet bowl, even one as old as your Granny, can be cleaned using good old fashioned housewives tips such as bicarbonate of soda or indeed a professional can resurface both bowl and tank for you. Of course, with the new back-to-basics trend in interiors you may choose to make a feature of crumbling plaster and chipped fire surrounds - there’s never been a better time to work that ‘worn in’ look.

TOP TIPS TO MAKING YOUR HOME WINTER-PROOF
A
lthough there may be a certain romance associated with snuggling up in front of a blistering fire, the truth is, cold homes can be costly, both on our pockets and our health. There are some simple ways to make your home winter proof and, as well as making your nights more comfortable, they could also save you some much-needed extra pennies for the Christmas festivities.
CHECK YOUR BOILER’S EFFICIENCY
Although not the most interesting part of the process, the efficiency of your boiler makes a huge difference to the warmth of your home. Older boilers were built with poor efficiency, and wear and tear can mean that they are costing the earth, whilst being largely ineffective. New condensing boilers are designed to maximise efficiency by limiting the energy lost through evaporation. If your boiler is more than ten years old, there are even some subsidies and grants available to help you with the purchase of a new one.
HAVE WINTER CURTAINS
By having seasonal curtains, you can ensure that it’s not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. As well as helping to insulate against heat loss and keeping the cold air out, winter curtains also play a large part in giving your home a warm and cosy 12 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
feel. Special heavy-duty curtains with an added insulation layer are the most effective. Regardless of how much warmer they make the house, however, they will certainly make you feel more protected from the harsh winter chill outside. As an extra to this, laying down thick rugs can also boost the warmth and cosiness of your winter retreat. Not only do they act as an extra layer of insulation on the floor, but also they prevent you from having to walk across cold floors, at once making you feel more cosy.
CHECK YOUR INSULATION
Although, once again, not the most exciting of jobs, how well you home is insulated is a crucial component of how efficient the heating is. One key place to start, in this respect, is the loft. As we all know, warm air rises and thus a lot of the heat in our homes escapes through the roof. By making sure the loft is adequately insulated, you prevent too much heat from escaping.
CREATE AN EMERGENCY KIT
lthough for some this may seem like a step too far, it will only take a minimal effort and you will be thankful if you end up having to rely on it. How extensive you decide to make your emergency kit rather depends upon your location, and the related threats. Making sure that you have an alternative heat source, torches and batteries, tools and equipment and a well-stocked pantry would certainly be a good starting point. Straying away from your home for a second, it is also important to ensure that you have a winter survival kit in your vehicle. This can be life saving if you ever get stuck somewhere in the cold.

THE KITKAT CHOCOLATORY ®
Y

Launched on Friday 27th September 2019, The KitKat® Chocolatory® is a luxury experience where you get the chance to create your own eight-finger KitKat®. At the heart of KitKat® Chocolatory® is the eight-finger ‘Create Your Break’ option which offers different flavour combinations and a host of diverse ingredients including shortbread pieces, mini marshmallows, honeycomb and rose petals. While you wait for your creation to set it offers the perfect opportunity to experience York’s Chocolate Story. There will be special edition six-finger KitKat® bars at York’s Chocolate Story too.
®
In 1935, Rowntree’s Marketing Manager George Harris was inspired to create a new type of product chocolate when a factory worker left a note in the company suggestion box: why not make something to eat in a “pack up”. Harris set to work, making a simple treat that appealed to everybody, was snack-sized and easily affordable. Thus, the KitKat® was born. From humble beginnings in York, the KitKat® has gone on to be a dominating force in the world of confectionery. Globally, a mind blowing 17.6 billion fingers are produced every year. In 2010, KitKat® was certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s most global brand and in 2014 was named Time Magazine’s most influential confectionery bar of all time. “There’s never been a product quite like KitKat®; everybody knows what it is!” said Exhibition Coordinator Bernie Fleck. “This exhibition offers a unique insight into the history of York’s most iconic export. We all have a memory associated with KitKats®; from the snack in your packed lunch, to the rare and wonderful treat you pick up in Japan. Its story is a fascinating one, involving groundbreaking marketing, revolutionary manufacturing and 17th Century mutton pies!”
SOME INTERESTING KITKAT INSIGHTS:
• KitKat®’s are actually named after a pie. • In 17th Century London, baker Christopher Catling became famous for his mutton pies. The pies were affectionately named Kit Cats, after an abbreviated form of the baker’s name. These pies became popular with a group of political and literary elite who would gather in Catling’s pie shop. In time, this group became known as Kit Kat club. It is from this club that first an assortment box of chocolates made by Rowntree’s was named and later the chocolate bar itself. 16 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE

6 SPECTACULAR EUROPEAN CHRISTMAS MARKETS
W
hilst the phenomenon is a relatively recent addition to Britain’s festivities, over on the continent, city squares have been filling up with stalls selling everything from fresh food to gifts for longer than anyone can remember. A tradition spanning centuries, it’s unsurprising that with the rise of budget airlines, many towns in Europe have begun marketing themselves as great weekend destinations in the run up to Christmas, primarily because they have world class markets at this time of year. We’ve been lucky enough to visit quite a few, and have come up with the following list of places that can’t help but get you into the goodwill spirit. Prepare for a gallon of mulled wine, a ton of bratwurst and more wooden decorations than you can hope to hang in any normal sized front room, then...
BOLOGNA, ITALY
STRASBOURG, FRANCE
France’s number one destination for market fiends, Strasbourg, capital of Alsace, makes the most of its quaint timber architecture by transforming itself into what you might imagine the North Pole looking like, if it weren’t a barren frozen wasteland. Cobbled streets lined with stars, angels and snowflakes, a fir tree towering over Place Kleber (apparently it has done so for 400 years), and streets divided into 11 market villages.
STUTTGART, GERMANY
Many say that Stuttgart’s market is the most beautiful in Europe. We’d be inclined to agree. Located in the shadows of the Old Palace, which is worth the trip alone, along with stalls outside the fun continues within the gates, with the Renaissance inner courtyard teeming with activity. You’ll have to go a long way to find anything as nostalgia-inspiring as this.
TRONDHEIM, NORWAY
Although Christmas markets are more synonymous with northern Europe, Bologna really puts Italy on the map. Centred around the 12th Century San Pietro Cathedral, the Fiera di Natale, the larger of two markets in town, is a wonderfully atmospheric offering in the heart of a city that has retained much charm thanks to wellpreserved medieval streets and buildings.
What’s more fitting for this time of year than a jaunt up into the Arctic Circle itself? Probably nothing, hence us recommending this little-known Norwegian city. You can ride a horse and sleigh, snuggle up next to open fires in the bars and cafes, and shop until you drop around the main square, Torvet, where an abundance of wooden chalets and Sami lavvos (tepee-style tents traditional in this corner of the world) can be found.
DRESDEN, GERMANY
VIENNA, AUSTRIA
Rumoured to be the oldest in Germany, there are accounts of Dresden Christmas Market- or Striezelmarkt- as long ago as 1434. Set against the backdrop of the River Elbe, it’s home to the world’s tallest Nutcracker, an abundance of vintage fairground rides, and a Stollen Festival on the second Saturday in advent. If you like stollen then you know where, and when, to go. 20 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
The Austrian capital doesn’t need that much help pulling in tourists, with its incredible abundance of museums, art galleries, and palatial buildings. Nevertheless, dating back to the 1200s, the city’s Christmas market tradition (then known as December Market) has more history than most cities in our list, with around 150 stalls in the spectacular Rathausplatz- at the steps of spectacular city hall.

HOW TO WOW
AT THE CHRISTMAS PARTY FALL BACK ON THE BASICS
If it all seems a bit overwhelming, you really can’t go wrong with the classic Little Black Dress. But black doesn’t have to be boring: try accessorising with some simple but tasteful chunky silver jewellery, a colourful evening cardigan or a silky shawl in a contrasting colour - and don’t forget the shoes, where you can really go to town and let yourself shine.
W
hether it’s a local get together or the annual office Christmas party, choosing the perfect outfit can be more stressful than fun. It’s one of the few times in a year you can let your hair down and dress to dazzle - but how do you get it right without looking like a Christmas tree? Here are some of our top tips.
DRESS FOR WHO YOU ARE
The key to dressing for a Christmas party is letting your personality shine through. Don’t feel as if you have to break out the sequinned dress if it’s not your thing - there are many alternatives to choose from: black velvet wide-legged trousers, sassy and sexy printed tops or even georgette print dresses dressed up with a classy shawl or evening-themed cardigan.
GET THE FOUNDATION RIGHT
Many women spend hours finding the perfect outfit, but neglect to get the basics right: yes, we’re talking underwear. Don’t discover at the last minute that you don’t have a strapless bra to go with your halter-neck dress or worse, that you’re suffering from the dreaded VPL. There are all sorts of shape-smoothing options, from knickers that even out your lumps and bumps under close-fitting dresses to tights that hold in your tum, and some clothes these days even have the shapewear built into them - see kaleidoscope.co.uk’s It’s My Secret range for ideas.
GO FOR SEXY BUT SIMPLE
While it might be tempting to break out the leopard-skin and stilettos, remember that even though you’re partying with them one night, they’ll still be your co-workers the next day. The office party with the boss in attendance is probably not the place for acres of cleavage - aim for sassy and sexy without overdoing it.
STYLE DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN SACRIFICING COMFORT
The office party can be a long night, so make sure your outfit is comfortable. Go for fabrics with a bit of stretch that will move with you and avoid too-tight waistbands if you’re going for a meal before the festivities. Most importantly, make sure you wear your new shoes around the house a few times before attempting to dance the night away in them if you want to avoid hobbling home with your feet covered in blisters. 22 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE

MICRODERMABRASION? FRESHER, CLEARER SKIN IN JUST A FEW SHORT TREATMENTS
A
s a non-surgical method of skin rejuvenation, microdermabrasion is quick, convenient and painless, immediately restoring younger, smoother looking skin without the need for chemicals, lasers or injectables. Facial microdermabrasion treatment uses a stream of non-allergenic crystals to remove your skin’s outermost layers of dead cells. Your therapist will use the handset to direct the stream of crystal over the treatment area and, where necessary, target specific zones. The handset then uses a mild suction to draw away the crystal and skin debris to reveal your new and improved complexion. The Facial is chemical free and non-invasive yet achieves amazing results revealing younger, healthier looking skin from the very first treatment. The skin’s appearance is further improved through increased collagen & elastin production as your body produces a new layer of skin. The benefits of microdermabrasion are many this treatment can be used for anything from stretch marks, fine lines, acne scarring and dull, tired skin to ageing skin, uneven skin tone and pigmentation.
DERMAL FILLERS
Dermal filler is a gel like substance containing hyaluronic acid. This acid is also present in skin and is responsible for retaining moisture
and keeping the skin plump. By adding hyaluronic acid to the skin, dermal filler add volume by attracting and holding on to moisture. This results in hydrated skin and its plumpness is enhanced. Dermal fillers also stimulate collagen production over several weeks thus strengthening the skin.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Dermal fillers provide a fast and effective method of rejuvenating the skin. The procedure is minimally invasive with little downtime. The results are visible instantly and settle after 2 weeks. They continue to improve for 3 months due to collagen stimulation. Fillers can correct lines, add volume, enhance facial features and help in lifting the face. They are great at improving the ageing skin and give it a youthful plumpness. Hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible as they can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase (Hyalase) which turns the filler into water. Hence most of the complications can be easily resolved in this way.
MAIN TREATMENT AREAS FOR DERMAL FILLERS
Cheeks, Under eye hollows, Nose / mouth lines, Smokers lines on upper lip, Lip volume, Jaw contouring.

LET’S TALK ABOUT…
STRESS By Karen Hayward
I
n last month’s feature, we looked at stress. I hope that you have had the chance to draw your circle to pinpoint the things that are fuelling your stress and are taking active steps to reduce them. I promised that this month, I would share some ideas to reduce your stress; everyday tips that you can use that, over time, will help. The first is exercise. Now, I am not suggesting for one minute that you rush to the gym or sign up for marathon but there is no doubting that exercise is great for helping to reduce stress. Movement of any kind will help the body to disperse adrenaline and cortisol so if you feel your stress levels starting to rise, just shaking your hands and arms by your side will help, as if you had pins and needles and are trying to get the blood flowing back into your hands. The most important thing with exercise is that you find something you enjoy – you are more likely to stick with it if you look forward to it. Getting outside is great for our mental health. We are so lucky to be surrounded by amazing scenery so getting out and exploring is relatively easy to do. We have fabulous sea sides and Dalby Forest on our doorstep, with lots of adventures for little ones (and not so little ones). Around York, we have so much history, so go for a walk, following the Walls or the Cat Trail. Even if the weather is bad, you can still have fun; grab your wellies and go puddle jumping, it’s not just for the kiddies! The fresh air will help you to sleep better too. It’s worth reviewing your diet and seeing what small improvements you can make. There is a lot of research being undertaken on the gut microbiome and its impact on mental health. See what tweaks 28 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
you can make to include more fresh food with your meals and try to reduce snacks and caffeine too. How long is it since you read a book for pleasure? With our fastpaced lives, it can often feel like an indulgent waste of time but it isn’t. If you don’t fancy reading, perhaps an audio book might be an idea. Or write a journal – keeping a journal can be very cathartic, an opportunity to download from your mind. Remember to practice gratitude and record the good things that happen, as we can often forget the positives. Every day, on a small piece of paper, I write one good thing that had happened that day and I pop the note into a jar. At the end of the year, I open the jar and read them. I have 365 good things that happened to me during the year. It’s a lovely reminder. Next month we will be talking about anxiety so until then, have a lovely month. Best wishes Karen Karen Hayward is a Mental Health First Aid Instructor with MHFA England and also runs private therapy clinics in Ryedale, specialising in trauma-based anxiety www.karenhayward.co.uk

MAA INDIAN RESTAURANT CELEBRATES ITS 3RD ANNIVERSARY Over the last 3 years, business has steadily grown and Maa has made its marque on Beverley. M
aa Indian restaurant located in Ladygate Beverley only 30 seconds away from the centre of Beverley Market Place, celebrates its 3rd anniversary this month.
It is no surprise that Maa Indian Restaurant has become so popular with both local and people from the East Yorkshire area. The two owners have gone to great lengths to ensure that only the finest, freshest British ingredients ( sourced locally when possible ) are used, couple these ingredients with the colourful and aromatic array of imported spices used in their recipes and you will quickly gain an understanding of how they manage to serve up their authentic Indian cuisine with tastes and textures as varied as the colours themselves.
The team at Maa would like to thank all our customers for their continued support over the last 3 years and we always look forward to welcoming them back to the restaurants. On Christmas Day Maa Indian Restaurants will be opening their doors to offer friends and families a change from the traditional Christmas Dinner. They look forward to welcoming customers on Christmas Day when they will be open from 5pm – 9pm. Tables must be pre-booked, and they suggest you do so early to avoid disappointment. THE PARVIN INDIAN RESTAURANT CELEBRATES 10 YEARS IN HAXBY unrest and uncertainty it is easy to overlook what really matters and forget the ones that need us the most, this certainly is not something that can be said about The Parvin. At first glance when you enter the restaurant you could be forgiven for being distracted by the friendly atmosphere, tasteful décor with plush seating and mood lighting all creating a very special ambiance, but above the bar you will notice a large number of certificates which have been awarded to The Parvin over the last 10 years for helping local charities.
Of course, if you ate at The Parvin you can count on having a lovely meal with fresh locally sourced ingredients and an array of exotic herbs and spices cooked traditionally to perfection. But, hey I’m telling you nothing more than a quick visit to Trip Advisor would confirm.
P&P asked manager Mohammed Safiqur Rahman to explain a little more, he said “Thanks to the local people of York and our loyal customer base, over the last 10 year whilst moving to Haxby from our first restaurant which was in Acomb we have enjoyed much success and I along with the team wanted to give something back to the local community and do this by running curry quiz nights in aid of local charities for example Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Christian Aid UK and many local small charities”. He went on to say, “Over the last 10 years I think we have raised almost £98,000 for local charities”.
So, with the above in mind, why am I bothering to write this feature? Well I had better explain. In todays climate with all the

EASY FRUIT CAKE Serves 12 With Christmas not far away many of us will be thinking of fruit cake. This is a very easy version with few ingredients but a great result. INGREDIENTS
• 1kg dried mixed fruit • 250g self-raising flour • 1 heaped tsp mixed spice • 500ml pure orange juice
METHOD
Place fruit and orange juice into a large bowl. Stir well, cover and leave to soak overnight in the fridge. Next day, preheat oven to 150â °C / Gas 2. Line a 20cm round cake tin with baking parchment. Add the 250g of self-raising flour and mixed spice to the soaked fruit. Stir thoroughly by hand or with a cake mixer. Tip the cake mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 2 hours. If the cake looks like it’s browning too fast, cover with foil or brown paper and continue to cook until it is springy to the touch. Cool completely and keep in a tin for up to two weeks. 2 32| |PEOPLE PEOPLE&&PLACES PLACESMAGAZINE MAGAZINE

BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO WINE
A
t first glance the subject of wine can seem overwhelming and frankly rather intimidating, what with sniffing the bouquet and judging the finish a novice wine taster could easily be put off. However there really is no need, as all you need to remember is that wine is supposed to be enjoyable, so simply buy the wine you most like the taste of regardless of current fashions or trends. To help you get started there are just three simple steps to remember when choosing a wine: look, smell and taste. But if you have time and the inclination, understanding the basics of wine types, selections, storage and tasting will add new dimensions to your wine experience. A good way to get to know more about wine is to start by taking a grape variety you know, then work your way through different examples from around the world. Lovers of Aussie Chardonnay, for instance, might enjoy barrel-matured white Burgundy. Or if you’ve already discovered fruit-filled Chilean Cabernet, then you really need to try the aristocratic reds of Bordeaux. Find out for yourself why the wines of New Zealand have become so popular, or experience the everlasting appeal of Burgundy. Just a few rungs up the price ladder, flavours become more intense, making it far easier to stick to a single glass. When exploring, don’t be afraid to ask questions of waiters or shop staff - if properly trained they will be full of useful advice. Generally speaking a good wine can be purchased for well under £10 these days, but try to avoid the really cheap offers, as these are rarely the best value for money. Excise duty, VAT, transport and packaging are virtually the same whether it’s a basic vin de table or from a prestigious estate. By paying a little extra - say £5 to £7 - you get a big increase in wine quality. If you find the thought of buying wine in a specialist wine shop too daunting, then why not buy from the comfort of your armchair? More people are ordering their wine online thanks to the convenience and range of wines on offer. Online wine merchants invariably provide more information about their wines than you will find on the label when perusing the supermarket shelves. When pairing wine with a specific food or meal there are just a few things to remember. Like a good marriage, wine and food were meant for each other, as each enhances and strengthens the experience of the whole. So why does it feel so daunting to try to pair foods with wines? If you are under the misapprehension that there is a hefty list of rules and guidelines that state which wine can be paired with which food then you are in for a surprise. The truth is there are no rules when matching your favourite wines with your favourite recipes. Yes there are popular matches and wellused pairings of wine and food but ultimately the best match is what pleases your palate. It is truly a personal preference, but if you don’t feel confident enough to trust your own taste you can always ask for some more experienced advice. With expert wine merchants available at your fingertips it has become a whole lot easier to learn more about wines and enjoy them at very competitive prices. The only golden rule would be to avoid cheap supermarket wine and you’ll discover a little good wine really does go a long way. 36 | PEOPLE & PLACES MAGAZINE
